Book Description
Brion Gysin (1916 - 1986) was a visual artist, historian, novelist, and an experimental poet credited with the discovery of the 'cut-up' technique -- a collage of texts, not pictures -- which his longtime collaborator William S. Burroughs put to more extensive use. He is also considered one of the early innovators of sound poetry, which he defines as 'getting poetry back off the page and into performance.' Back in No Time gathers materials from the entire Gysin oeuvre: scholarly historical study, baroque fiction, permutated and cut-up poetry, unsettling memoir, selections from The Process and The Last Museum, and his unproduced screenplay of Burroughs' novel Naked Lunch. In addition, the Reader contains complete texts of several Gysin pieces that are difficult to find, including "Poem of Poems," "The Pipes of Pan," and "A Quick Trip to Alamut."
Customer Reviews:
A great starting point for understanding Gysin.......2007-01-02
Embracing the totality of Brion Gysin's output and influence was essentially impossible prior to the publication of this book. Weiss's study of Gysin's work and his long friendship with the writer/musician/visionary results pays off: opening the door to creative and intellectual explorations that continue reverberating to this day.
Essential reader to the work of a beat generation figurehead.......2004-05-28
Gysin's work is so overlooked (and so hard to find) that he's assumed the reputation of a cult-figure within a literary movement his work helped create. Here, together in one volume, are excerpts from his most important writings. "To Master, A Long Goodnight" (a biography of the man who was the basis for Harriet Beecher Stowe's anti-slavery classic "Uncle Tom's Cabin"), published in 1946, is included along with his script for Burroughs's "Naked Lunch," written in the 1970s. There's a revealing selection of his cut-ups ("The Third Mind," a Burroughs collaboration); songs, set to music scores by Steve Lacy; as well as gallery notes and art from the 1960s. There are also five chapters from "The Process," the novel that synthesized much of Gysin's philosophy of belief, magic, art, and drugs in the service of self-discovery. Editor Jason Weiss has done a terrific job linking these disparate sources into a coherent whole without leaving the first-time reader feeling as though he were on a guided tour. The book is a great starting point for anyone interested in learning more about the roots of the beat generation.

Fool's Fate is the third book of Robin Hobb's Tawny Man trilogy, and the ninth and concluding volume of the Fitzchivalry Farseer saga, one of the best high-fantasy series of the turn of the millennium. Fitz is the bastard son of the royal family of the Six Duchies, which he serves as assassin, guardsman, and Skill-magician. Fitz also serves the White Prophet as "Catalyst," the unique person who may enable the White Prophet to change human destiny for the better. In Fool's Fate, Fitz must accompany his kinsman, Prince Dutiful Farseer, to a distant northern island, where the prince must slay the world's last male dragon to win the hand of the Out Islands princess Elliania, the woman he loves. However, not even Elliania wants the dragon dead; why, then, does she require Dutiful to kill Icefyre? Are darker forces manipulating Elliania? Even worse, if Icefyre dies, the White Prophet foresees not only his own death, but a grim future for humankind. The prophet's only hope of changing the future is his Catalyst. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
A heralded writer of epic fantasy, Robin Hobb has given readers worlds within worlds in her heroic Farseer and Liveship Traders trilogies. Now she takes the final step in the breathtaking trilogy of the Tawny Man, as the tale of FitzChivalry Farseer comes to an epic end. Rife with boundless adventure and unforgettable characters, Fool’s Fate is destined to become a classic of the genre.
Assassin, spy, and Skillmaster, FitzChivalry Farseer, now known only as man-at-arms Tom Badgerlock, has become firmly ensconced in the queen’s court at Buckkeep. Only a few are aware of his fabled, tangled past—and the sacrifices he made to survive it. And fewer know of his possession of the Skill magic. With Prince
Dutiful, his assassin-mentor Chade, and the simpleminded yet strongly Skilled Thick, FitzChivalry strives to aid the prince on a quest that could ultimately secure peace between the Six Duchies and the Outislands—and win Dutiful the hand of the Narcheska Elliania.
For the Narcheska has set the prince on an unfathomable task: to behead a dragon trapped in ice—the legendary Icefyre, on the island of Aslevjal. Yet not all the clans of the Outislands support the prince’s effort to behead their
legendary defender. Are there darker forces at work behind the Narcheska’s imperious demand? As the prince and his coterie set sail, FitzChivalry works behind the scenes, playing nursemaid to the ailing Thick, while striving to strengthen their Skill—ultimately bringing his unacknowledged daughter into the web of the Skill magic, where the truth must finally unfold.
The quest emerges amid riddles that must be unraveled, a clash of cultures, and the ultimate betrayal. For knowing that the Fool has foretold he will die on the island of ice, FitzChivalry has plotted with Chade to leave his dearest friend behind. But fate cannot so easily be defied.

a fool in love, love the Fool [no spoilers].......2007-09-03
"The Tawny Man: Fool's Fate" concludes "The Tawny Man Trilogy" as FitzChivalry Farseer, in the guise of Tom Badgerlock, quests with Prince Dutiful and others to obtain the head of Icefyre for the Prince's Out Island bride-to-be Narcheska Elliania. The author beautifully mixes emotions with character and environment descriptions to finish a fantastic realm that started with "The Farseer Trilogy" and "The Liveship Traders Trilogy".
The Skill is cleverly applied in the final novel of the storyline. Fitz utilizes the Skill competently, a talent he has been lacking throughout the series, and because of Nighteyes' absence the Wit becomes his secondary ability. Nettle and Thick display the cleverest and most unique talents. Prince Dutiful asserts himself and develops well as a leader as Chade's aggressive nature pushes the limit of all their abilities.
Burrich's appearance helps blend the past with the present. Chade's changed a lot since "The Farseer: Assassin's Apprentice" with his lively and outgoing behavior however remains the same in his machinations. There could be an entirely new history concerning the Black Man on the island of Aslevjal, one I would be interested in reading. Fitz's most wonderful work though connects his affection with the Fool. Sadly the series ends after becoming attached with many wonderful characters.
After all the buildup and delay from the original series, I was disappointed with the outcome of the Rooster Crown. Jinna and her Hedge-Witch magic are pretty much neglected. A more detailed map of the significant terrains and comprehensive appendix would have been useful.
I highly recommend this series to any fan of the fantasy genre.
Thank you.
A Compelling End to an Epic Tale.......2007-08-20
(Note: This review is for the whole series not just this final chapter) This book ends the tale of the Farseers which began with the Assassin series and is one of those rare epic tales that you rarely get to read. You get to travel a mans whole life and its culmination is most satisfying. It is probably one of the few series I have ever enjoyed that I hope ends here with no additional sequels it is done so well. The character has earned a well deserved rest º I would recommend that any reader start with the Assassin series and end with the Tawny Man series (6 books) and you will understand the unbelievable highs and lows of an epic life in fantasy. All I can say to Robin Hobb is thanks for a job well done and a tale that surpassed all my expectations and surprised me anytime I thought I knew what was coming next.
Five Stars for The Series - Three For This Book.......2007-08-09
I'm not sure what I can say that hasn't been said before. I've been crying off and on since I finished this book over 24 hours ago. I have yet to eat and my friends keep wanting to know what's wrong.
This book broke my heart.
The Author herself in a forum stated that the ending kind of took a life of it's own. That her projected ending (when she started writing) changed by the time she actually got around to writing this. This happens to writers and I can't fault her that. It's her creation and her baby.
However, the ending is so tragic to me that I can find little solace in it. I am undable to follow her train of thought to what she deems to be the "natural ending". I follow the trail originally set out by her and arrive at my own conclusions.
The ending with SPOILERS
Molly is, IMO an cop out. We are told over and over again that she is his 'lost love'. And also we know that she could never accept him with the Wit, could never accept him with Nighteyes - that he would have to choose. The Fool believes she would do the same with his love/bond with Fitz. So how is this true love? The Fool's love for Fitz "knows no boundaries". It's unconditional. It is the purest love, the most monumental love, the kind of love that transcends physical and mental bounds -- that has been committed to page in the fantasy genre -- IMO. And yet it is pushed aside at the end for Molly. I never expected a happy compact ending. But for Fitz to say, "Molly is enough, more than enough for me." makes me want to break something.
Perhaps the Catalyst and the Changer could not stay together indefinitely without changing the world over and over again -- but why did we have to have the ending we did?
I feel awful for the Fool at the end of this. He has his life and the knowledge that Fitz would have followed him and the knowledge that he was loved, oh so loved by him.... but I'm not sure that's enough considering he may think Fitz dead.
I'm rambling. The point is I don't know if I recommend to read this book. If you're going to take it the way I have, you may have to see a shrink.
I'm going to go back to crying now.
Sad To See It End.......2007-07-09
WOW.....I have not read an author in a long while that just grabs you and gets you involved with the story line and the ones in it. After finishing the 9th book(the three connected series), I almost felt a little worn out, but very happy with the way it ends. My heart almost breaks with the way the Fool goes off into the sunset with out knowing what happens to the one whom he has shared so much. Anyway, will have to reread the who thing again one day. KUDOS to HOBB
Please dont let it be over..........2007-07-03
This book may cause me to never read another fantasy novel, because well, how can anything else compare? OK maybe I am being a little melodramatic, but this fantasy series is one of the best Ive ever read. It saddens me that my adventures with Fitz and the Fool (and the other incredible characters) may have come to an end (well except for any re-reading I will do). The ending was excellent, with plenty of book left to wrap up the plot lines. It is rather uncanny how Hobb somehow closes all the story line and it fits so perfect.
Please, Ms. Hobb, give us some more..... There is still plenty to see and do in the farseer universe
Product Description
In this trenchant, concise analysis, Schmookler attacks what many consider to be the great shibboleth of our culture - the "free marketplace." Fool's Gold reveals how a system that regards nothing as sacred, everything as mere commodity, creates illusions and devalues everything from art to the planet's resources. The market, Schmookler argues, leads people onto false paths, paths that traditional religions have called "sin" and "idolatry. What religions have taught people to avoid - excessive attachment to possessions, enslavement to our whims and desires - the market teaches us to pursue, while it surrounds us with a sterile world. From early in this century, Schmookler points out, advertisers have used imagery to make their commodities seem more like holy icons than the mere products of consumerism that they are. A system that turns everything into a commodity erodes the ability of human beings to hold onto what is sacred within and among themselves. Nature is displaced by a superficial culture and we become alienated from the source of our being; the phony displaces the real. This results in a distancing of human consciousness from the wellspring of meaning, of vision, of contact with the sacred. In Schmookler's vision, we are now faced with the task of reclaiming the sacred, a reclamation that will require both systematic and spiritual transformations. We need to remember that we are creatures, not the Creator, and rid ourselves of the illusion that what we can control and regiment, within ourselves as well as in the world, is sufficient for our sustenance. There are visions available to us of a reality that transcends us. The ways to that reality lie within us, in one another, in other cultures, and in the living systems of the Earth.

Book Description
Clive Barker has made his mark on modern fiction by exposing all that is surreal and magical in the ordinary world --- and exploring the profound and overwhelming terror that results. With its volatile mix of the fantastical and the contemporary, the everyday and the otherworldly, Weaveworld is an epic work of dark fantasy and horror -- a tour de force from one of today's most forceful and imaginative artists.
Customer Reviews:
My all time favourite.......2007-09-27
This is the best book I have ever read. In my opinion it's even better than Lord of the Rings.
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Carpet world conflict.
This is a bit more fantasy, a bit less horror. A bunch of supernaturals decide to hide themselves away in a carpet, hence the title. This is looked after by a woman. All goes well, except for that annoying trait that humans have: they kick the bucket eventually.
The death of the rugminder leads to a conflict and chase for possession of this magic stuff, between our protagonist, and a human agent of the scary non-human woman Immacolata and her rather nasty agents. A bit on the dull side and not as good as that sounds, really.
Brilliant Complex Fantasy Tale.......2007-05-03
This magnificent fantasy takes the standard elements of the genre and imbues them with fresh vigor. Young Cal Mooney is a bored office clerk stuck in grey, depressed Liverpool, living with his father when a fateful encounter with a magical carpet opens Cal's eyes to the glories of another world. The carpet is the secret hiding place for the Seerkind, a species of magical beings who have managed to salvage bits and pieces of their magnificent world in a magnificent tapestry. The Seerkind are hiding from a terrible, omnipotent enemy known as the Scourge. For more than 80 years, the Seerkind have lain sleeping inside the carpet guarded by volunteer Seerkind who have sacrificed their immortality and grown old as protectors of the Weave. But the last guardian has died before passing on her secret to her granddaughter, Suzanna who is unaware of her magical heritage and the powers it provides to her. When Cal stumbles on the secret of the carpet, he and Suzanna must join forces to protect Weaveworld from Immacolata, a powerful Seerkind witch seeking revenge for banishment from Weaveworld and Shadwell, Immacolata's human companion, an ambitious salesman obsessed with possessing Weaveworld. "Weaveworld" is a dazzling, well crafted story that slowly reveals all the wonders and beauty of a fantastic place. Barker is a talented writer who is equally adept at scenes of mesmerizing beauty and blood-chilling horror. He also possesses a deft touch with characterization that reveals the heart and soul of villains and protagonists alike. The reader can feel sympathy even for Immacolata spurned and rejected by her people or for the Scourge, driven mad by loneliness and despair.
Spellbinding!!!!!!!.......2007-04-29
I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to take a ride on a vibrantly imaginative roller coaster into the unknown. I first read this book many years ago when I was in college. From the very first page I became captivated in the brilliant fantasy world that Clive Barker so cleverly orchestrates. This is one of the best books ever written in this genre. Clive Barker is obviously known as a master of horror and he certainly knows how to spill blood all over pages; yet keep you begging for more. But, let me tell you folks, he is also a master of the purely imaginative realm and this work is a true testament to his awesome talents.
A colorful adventure into the weave.......2006-11-29
Weave world is a clever little adventure within an adventure beneath an adventure. One of the main characters of weave world is the twenty five year old Mr. Calhoun Mooney. He and his father are living in the present in London, suffering from their loses. The other main character, named Suzanna Parish lives as a potter who receives a message on her phone telling her that one of her only relatives living nearby is sick in a hospital bed and that she might visit her. Upon visiting her sick grandmother, who cannot speak because of her sickness, she feels an almost mental installation or a prophecy telling her to check her grandmothers home because there is something very important their.
Cal watches his father's prize winning pigeon collection while his dad lays in his depression. One day a single one of the pigeons escape and cal gives chase of it. Upon following the pigeon he finds himself at a house with thousands of birds all flocking their, flying in a whirlwind of birds, all above a single house and backyard. This same house is Mimi lancheski's, Suzanna's grandmothers. What occurs afterwards at the house on Rue Street is a serious part of the plot but Cal and Suzanna meet and they both adventure to a magic world caught inside of a carpet with its own people and its own places.
The dark tones that this author paints in ones mind are both bold and a little bit eccentric. This is the second book that Clive barker has written and it is out of the two books he has written by far the most descriptive.

Customer Reviews:
The World as Sacrament.......2004-12-14
Clearly intended for the theological student or seminarian, DISCERNMENT AND TRUTH is a scholarly, yet highly readable exploration of the art of spiritual discernment, meaning the discipline of recognizing the hidden movement of God in history, in daily life, in the interior/exterior universe of ourselves. The author focuses on three main areas: the theology of discernment as it develops through history, from the earliest Christian writers through the 20th century; case studies from Christian literature; and the practice of discerning truth, of allowing the world to become sacramental in our eyes. The book is a treasure trove for spiritual directors and students of the contemplative dimension of spirituality. Included: a first-rate bibliography and questions for study and reflection for each chapter.
