Book Description
The prize-winning debut of an incendiary new voice in contemporary American fiction,
47th Street Black is the story of JC and Mookie, whose rise in the gangster-driven ghettos of Chicago is as swift as it is brutal.
In the early sixties, 47th street is the heart of black Chicago, where recent migrants from the South come to move up in the world. JC and Mookie are high school dropouts, playing stickball in the street when they stumble upon the dead body of the area's black liaison to the mafia. Where others would run, Mookie sees opportunity, and in no time he and JC are working for Salvie, the local boss. Within a year, they are the most infamous figures on 47th Street, best friends and partners with flashy cars, clothes, and women.
As they alternate telling their stories, the balance of power shifts: smooth, charismatic Mookie becomes the de facto leader and small, violent JC the enforcer—roles that send JC to jail for a murder they commit together. In the 15 years he's away, JC gains an education and a resentment he can't control, while Mookie gains power over the entire South Side. By the time JC is paroled, both the neighborhood and the two men's lives are on an inexorable path to an explosive confrontation with simmering injustice.

Are we products of our environment?.......2004-04-05
'47th Street Black' is a first novel for Mr. Ojikutu. He picks an interesting and difficult topic: life in the streets. Mr. Ojikutu makes political statements and observations about life in the United States through main characters Mookie and J.C.
Mookie is an exception to the rule of the projects, his parents are still together and a relative is not raising him. However, his father is just going through the motions of living without really living. Mookie has the potential to fulfill the dreams of his father, when life as a black man in the USA destroys those dreams, and Mookie turns to the other option available in his neighborhood.
J.C. is Mookie's best friend. He almost has this love/hate relationship with Mookie where he resents and admires his talents. It seems that J.C. is always living in Mookie's shadow.
The premise of 47th Street back is worthy of a book. Mr. Ojikutu intersperses the history of the 1960's through out the plot. It seems to me that the story could have been shorter and there were times that it was difficult to keep reading; the story-line did not hold my attention after a certain point. Also, sometimes the dialect makes it hard to follow. Perhaps this would be a more interesting read for men and/or women who enjoy reading about murder, drugs, chauvinism and the mafia. It is an admirable first novel, but I don't know that I would read this author again.

For a first novel, I was blown away.......2003-08-18
by the imagery and the pain conveyed. You feel the hopelessness of the folks on 47th Street and, even though he probably shouldn't be the one I was rooting for, I was on JC's side from the beginning. Rough around the edges and stubborn, JC is like many people I know. I was sorry I read it so quick!
When's the movie coming out?.......2003-05-09
I was blown away by Ojikutu's gritty, urban novel. This book is definitely not for the timid and prudish. He tells a fascinating tale of inner-city gangster life set on the South side of Chicago. Ojikutu does such a fine job developing thoughtful, three- dimensional characters that seem to jump right off the page. Being a Chicagoan, I feel compelled to drive down to 47th Street in search of Ojikutu's mystical character, Black. I can not wait until this book gets picked up by a major movie studio; this has Hollywood blockbuster hit written all over it! I just hope that Robert DeNiro and Mekhi Pfifer will be available!
Charismatic to Mundane to Boring.......2003-04-19
When I read the plot of this story, I bought it instantly. As I started the story, it was humorous and entertaining while being honest. I was interested in the characters and why they got into the lifestyle that they got into. For the first time, I wasn't aggravated by an author from my hometown who talked about the settings (preferably because he spoke of them from an older period so I couldn't say "I already knew that").
But when one of them went to jail, the story got a little mundane. I have heard time & time again what happens in jail and it was just like "Okay and?" Then when he got out of jail, then the story just grew boring. The author is great at setting the tone and organization of the plot. But one thing that really took me out of the story was the fact that he waited SO LONG into the book to start describing J.C.'s physical traits. The dry lips & wet eyes are important to know at the beginning. It gives me a mental picture of the characters and I can begin to judge how they will be through the story. The way the characters were described so much later in the story sounded more like an afterthought.
As for the plot, started off great and then it just sounded like something I've read (or seen) so many times before. I tried hard but I was not impressed. I'm sorry.
I know J.C and Mookie.......2003-03-08
While reading this book I kept thinking I know J.C. and Mookie the names are diffrent but the they are the same guys I know in this day and time from around the way.
While reading this book I grew up with J.C. and Mookie, meaning that I felt it when they were kids, and then they became teenagers, and then men. I was with J.C. while he did his bid in prison, I was Mora hanging with Mookie all those years.
The scene in Prison was rough and real I cried for J.C. There were some serious comments about God and Jesus,(I didn't think anybody else thought like that)
I also was reminded of Sheakspere's Othello, because of all the manipulation going. I hated how we were/are made to do each other in, and the cycle continues.
I didn't give the brother five stars only because some parts were kind of hard to follow however, this is the brother's first effort and it was worthy.

Book Description
Tommie Simms was supposed to be the community hope, the young man from the neighborhood who made good. He attended a state university, married a respectable woman, and landed a position at a white-collar insurance firm. Watching over Chicago from the thirty-third floor of his company’s downtown high rise, Tommie ignores the gnawing sense that he doesn’t belong on this path—and that in a blink of an eye, he could stray from its given destination. And then he does . . .
Soon Tommie is laid off, and he begins to see himself as just another faceless entity on the city’s fringes. After each fruitless job interview, Tommie’s wife withdraws from him further, and in the mirror he faces
the reflection of failure his family never intended for him. Stymied by rejection and mounting debt, Tommie is seduced into peddling dope as his best opportunity to define himself and to provide for those he loves.
But a corporate job is no preparation for hustling, and when Tommie finds himself on the wrong side of a crooked cop, everyone wants a piece of him: his street-hustling cousins, the police, friends, loan sharks, even
a panderer from his white-collar past. In order to break free, Tommie must find a way to dig himself out of a deepening hole, before the city buries him.

The story went no where.......2007-08-01
This was a very dissappointing read. Although the characters were well crafted and clearly defined, there isn't a single likable person in the novel. Overall, the writing is good, but the subject matter and point of view is so depressing that you wondered why any of these people bother to get up in the morning. While I believe Bayo Ojikutu is a talented writer, this novel was just not my cup of tea. There was no point to the whole thing. No lessons learned, no moral; the story just ended in same place it began. I don't always need a happy ending, but I do need to feel like there was a point to the whole thing.

Deffinatley a great 2nd book in what looks to be an amazing trilogy. Deffinatley looking foward to the final instalment......
Great story but..........2007-09-26
I think this is a great series. I have to agree with a previous reviewer that takhisis came across as "here is power". I am looking forward to which side weis ends up putting mina. If she is for the light, then who will balance her out in the dark? If she is for the dark, then will they bring back paladine? After all, as it was stated previous, there must be a balance. I for one would love to have Takhisis back.:> none of the other evil gods of krynn came close to having her style.. and think of the poor chromatic dragons! all alone, no goddess.. no love.. its just not fair :
<
Good continuation in the series.......2007-08-30
Simply put, if you've read the War of Souls trilogy and/or Amber and Ashes (the first in this trilogy), you should most definitely be reading this one. Quality-wise I find the writing and the plot to be a little more simplistic compared to the behemoth that was the War of Souls (hence the 4 stars), but it's still quite worth the time and money to continue the saga of the Dragonlance world.
Other reviews have noted the influence of the gods in this trilogy - particularly this book - but if you read the first it explains that the meaning of "Age of Mortals" has changed with the return of the gods. It makes sense, when you think about it - there is a void in the top spot of the pantheon of gods, and thus a power struggle develops between the deities, and thus they turn to mortals to be the deciding factor because the gods cannot go to war with each other (if they do, Chaos returns).
Great read, but a few problems.........2007-06-21
I would recomend reading this book. It's written well, and the story is very interesting and highly captivating.
I just don't really like how the gods are portrayed. I don't agree with the gods being so impulsive, and quick to emotion. It really doesn't make much sense....
Confused..........2007-06-18
I thought both of the books were great and full of surprises. The only thing I'm confused about is the god Majere really Raistlin? If anyknows, please send an email at ihatebrandon_2@hotmail.com. Thank you.

Super Reader.......2007-09-01
A bunch of robot superheroes, in the 2000AD 'we shoot stuff, a lot' sense, vs a planetary entity (Mars), that has gone insane.
Bad things happen. The ABC Warriors are more human than the humans, except they don't bleed, and if you shoot them with a death ray, they will survive, rather than vaporize.
Bad puns, too, 'nano-nano' coating.
'Shazbot!' etc.
Plus a lot of pop culture references that will leave you chortling, better than 'John Cartier of Mars', although that is in there.
What an odd book..........2007-05-05
I got this book for free while at a convention. The Black Library was there and I purchaced a number of their books and in doing so was told to take a free book from the bin. Having seen the Judge Dredd movie I was intreagued by the ABC warriors so I picked it up. The book starts off strange and then takes a left turn into wierd. It assumes that you not only already know the characters but that you know of their entire history and the world in which they live. This seems odd as there is only one other book available and it can't possibly relate all the information needed to segue into this one. Setting that asside I continued to read and was periodically confused by a number of things. Robots that need to eat and want to engage in sex? Robots casting magic spells? Seemly unlimited ammo and weapons? A planet attacking its inhabitants *literaly*? Any of these could have been ok if only there was a bit more explanation involved. The redeeming factor is the characters themselves. They're a typical "band of brothers" hodge podge with quirks and idiosyncracies that make them highly entertaining. Combined with the ludicrous number of pop-culture references interspersed thoughout the dialogue made for an enjoyable (if somewhat surreal) read.

Book Description
Created in conjunction with an exhaustive critical commentary, this is the only English translation of 1 Enoch that takes into consideration all of the textual data now available in the Ethiopic version, the Greek texts, and the Dead Sea Aramaic fragments. Since only the first of two Hermeneia commentary volumes is now available, this book provides an indispensable translation of the whole work.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended book!.......2007-09-15
As a Christian since 83' I wanted more explanation to some of the most recent phenomena that has been happening around the world. We live in a society that is constantly changing. The New Testament speaks of Angels and Demons and warns us to spiritual prepared at all times. Enoch is mentioned briefly in the book of Genesis and the book of Jude. 1 Enoch give a better understanding of the scriptures presented in the books previously mentioned. A great read. Easy to understand.
Most convenient scholarly translation.......2007-07-17
The size of this translation makes it extremely handy for travel and quick reference. This is especially useful as it is the most up-to-date scholarly collation and translation of Enoch available in English. The only annoyance is the lack of reference available to the original languages which are translated; one is either refered to the first volume of the Hermeneia commentary, or has the wait on the forthcoming second volume. Overall, however, it is extremely useful for anyone working in Second Temple Judaism or Early Christianity.
1 Enoch -- the authoritative translation.......2007-01-04
There are several recent translations of 1 Enoch (or Ethiopic Enoch) in English, including those of Knibb (1978), Isaac (1983), Black (1985) and Olson (2004) [not to mention recent reprints of outdated nineteenth century translations by Dillmann, Laurence and Schodde, or that of Charles (1912, 2003)] but the present new translation by Nickelsburg and VanderKam is bound to be the authoritative one for decades to come. First, because they are the two major American specialists of 1 Enoch, both also involved in the Hermeneia commentary on 1 Enoch. Second, because their excellent translation with extensive footnotes is based upon textcritical analysis of the Ethiopic, as well as the Aramaic and Greek texts. Thirdly, because this edition is attractive, cheap and convenient. Whereas scholars may want to buy several translations, this is the best buy for students and all others interested in Early Judaism and New Testament backgrounds.
A worthy study in the ancient writings...........2006-04-19
Before I give the high's of this book, let me express what the book of Enoch 1 isn't. First off, the book is not some great secret that the early church fathers wanted to hide away...as you might hear from the Dan Brown and Elaine Pagels crowd. The reason this book was not added to the early canonization of the full Bible (i.e. OT and NT) is the same reason why it wasn't included in the early Greek traditions and translations of the OT (somewhere around the time, maybe a bit after the book of `Ezra-Nechemyah)...the book of Enoch does not hold up to the sacred truths of what Biblical Holy Scripture is, that is, it doesn't hold up against the measure that the Scripture should have an in-depth and cohesive revelation of who God is...in other words, in simplistic terms, unlike books like B'resheet,Yesha'yahu, Mattityahu, Mark, Luke, and Yochanan, along with the Sha'ul's letters et cetera, the book of Enoch cannot be trusted as a primary source of revelation toward the truth that is God through Yeshua (considering that the OT aims toward the Messiah as seen in the Torah and the Histories and the Prophets and the NT reveals the Messiah as seen in the four Gospels, letters, and the Revelation
et cetera).
Secondly, the book seems a bit more influential to the (what I will honestly call) Satanically inspired Gnostic beliefs...though I would not and will not put this book on the same low level as the supposed Gospel of T'oma, the Gospel of Miryam of Magdala, et cetera...why do I say Gnosticism is Satanically inspired? Well if you read your Bible and you trust your Bible as a Source of God's words to mankind, God's distinct message to mankind, then you would read about how even so early church fathers as Paul and John talk about how lies were already being built up along the expanding church. These lies would be later known as Gnosticism, that is, occult studies and beliefs placed with Christian names (such as Jesus' name and the before mentioned Miryam of Magdala name). Gnostic Gospels are not part of the Bible because they, as with Enoch, though the book Enoch is not on the same depth of depravity as most Gnostic "writings," holds no water in comparison to the revealed truth about God that is found in what we call the Bible today. The books are in the Bible today because though written across thousands of years, and across levels of society (from priests to tax collectors), they hold a unifying truth and cohesive strength toward showing the truth about who God is.
So why am I giving the Book of Enoch five stars. Well the Book of Enoch is an important addition to any theological student such as myself, whether you are going through seminary as I am right now, or already are apart of the Church. The reason is because it holds an important link to the past as being one of the fragments that have been found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Though the book of Enoch was not considered Biblical truth (which is ironic because the Pharisees had the sacred truth that showed Yeshua being who Yeshua is, and because of dark egotism, the Pharisees did not realize the truth), the book was found to be important in an "end times" sort of way for such groups as those living in the Qumran. The Book of Enoch shows a distinct power toward what has been considered the fall of the angels, the considered tales surrounding Noach, and many other considerations that aimed toward the first end of the world, that being the Flood...and toward the still future end of the world (which CAN be trusted to be found in such factual documents as the Olivet Discourse and the Book of Yeshua's Revelation). Reading the Book of Enoch, especially this translation which doesn't have the New Age occultism that so many blind people today seem to envelope themselves in. I can say that truthfully because I myself, before coming to Christ, was also involved in such occult studies such as the Golden Dawn and Wicca for many years...being said, I think I have a pretty good inkling toward Satan's lies in this day and age. Still, I digress, the Book of Enoch helps to develop apocalyptical studies in the early Middle East, that of Israel (because remember Christianity did not develop from a vacuum, the Church itself comes from a powerful and prestigious Messianic Jewish legacy starting with the Disciples of Yeshua and those later disciples like Sha'ul). Reading this particular translation of the Book of Enoch I can help you, as it has helped myself, to understand the "winds of chance" that flowed throughout the world of the OT and the NT. I find that if you take this book with a grain of salt, using a cliche, forgive me, it will give you a greater understanding of who and what went on up to and around, and even a little after, the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70...
The book itself is well spaced and well divided. The editors have worked hard to present as intellectual a study as possible, without frivolous "additions" you find in the occult/Jesus Seminar style of "theology" (I say it that way because no true student of theology would take such practices seriously)...then again, there are many a Christian who believes in Preterism, so then again...anyway. I purchased the book after looking for a well developed study on the Book of Enoch, getting it ironically enough at the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit in NC. Which I will put into this little review, saying that it is an important Biblical and Christological exhibit. Going back to the book itself, I like what is said in the introduction, the introduction helps to create a framework in looking at the Book of Enoch with intelligent consideration that is lacking in a lot of pop theology and historiography today. Throughout the text, there are many notes along the pages that show how the translation worked, how grammatical structure worked, along with possible word meaning, and that like. In other works, the editors knew what they were doing when constructing this book, Enoch 1. Again I should say, you should take the book with a grain of salt because it does not have the biblical backbone that developed the truth of Scripture we have today, BUT, the book is still relevant enough to show just what was thought of and considered from the OT through the NT period of Biblical writings.
All in all, any worthy student of OT and NT would have to give this one particular book translation the time and effort in reading. It isn't as important as the Bible, realistically, but it still has much to say about the peoples and beliefs around that ancient time period.
An invaluable work and a welcome addition to Biblical Studies.......2005-08-14
The collaborative effort of George W. E. Nickelsburg (Professor Emeritus, University of Iowa) and James C. VanderKam (John A. O'Brien Professor of Hebrew Scriptures, University of Notre Dame, Indiana), 1 Enoch: A New Translation is an invaluable work and a welcome addition to Biblical Studies. Based on the Hermeneia commentary, 1 Enoch is divided into five sections, followed by two brief appendices: The Book of the Watchers, The Book of Parables, The Book of the Luminaries, The Dream Visions, The Epistle of Enoch, The Birth of Noah, and Another Book by Enoch. Different sections portray the evolution of stages of Enochic tradition, which are linked by a common world view that considers the present world incurably corrupt and unjust, in need of divine judgment and renewal. Claiming to transmit divine revelation, as given to Enoch in primordial times and made public in the last days to perpetuate the community of the chosen, 1 Enoch is translated with every effort to present ancient writings as clearly and intelligibly to the reader as possible. Extensive footnotes, annotations and reference allow this complex script to be comprehensible to lay readers (with effort), and 1 Enoch: A New Translation is an enthusiastically recommended primary source for religious studies and reference shelves.

Book Description
The first commentary on this work since 1773
1 Enoch is one of the most intriguing books in the Pseudepigrapha (Israelite works outside the Hebrew canon). It was originally written in Aramaic and is comprised of several smaller works, incorporating traditions from the three centuries before the Common Era. Employing the name of the ancient patriarch Enoch, the Aramaic text was translated into Greek and then into Ethiopic. But as a whole, it is a classic example of revelatory (apocalyptic) literature and an important collection of Jewish literature from the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
This volume represents the culmination of three decades' work on the Book of 1 Enoch for Nickelsburg. He provides detailed commentary on each passage in chaps. 1-36 and 81-108, and an introduction to the full work. The introduction includes sections on overviews of each of the smaller collections, texts and manuscripts, literary aspects, worldview and religious thought, the history of ideas and social contexts, usage in later Jewish and Christian literatures, and a survey of the modern study of the book. (Volume 2 will cover chaps. 37-80 and will be written by Nickelsburg and James VanderKam.)

Book Description
Award-winning Navajo artist Gerald Nailor classically illustrates the simplicity of life on the Navajo reservation. This portrait of family life by J.B. Enochs was originally created in the 1940's as part of a literacy project. It retains its freshness for today's young readers, ages 5-10.
Customer Reviews:
cheap copy of the original edition.......2005-03-12
This edition does not come close to the original edition from the fourties. the original 'Little Man's Family' consisted of three booklets, each for a different age level. This booklet is the Reader, the one for the upper age level (3rd grade and up). The original booklet has been copied in a sloppy manner to produce this cheap knock off, the lines are much too thick in comparison to the original and does not do justice to the artist. Also: the original was a bilingual edition (Navajo and English, this booklet is in English only) the only thing that's right about this booklet is the price.
A little gem that has happily been found again........1999-07-09
You cannot imagine my delight when I ran across this in the gift shop at Canyon De Chelly. I run the Early Pediatric Literacy Program in Gallup, NM, and I am always on the lookout for age and culturally appropriate books for our child patients. We are a Reach Out And Read site at the RMCH College Clinic in Gallup. We are surrounded by the Navajo Nation and over half of our patients are Navajo. In the last 50 years the lives of these people has changed drastically and many of the old ways have been lost forever but they greatly enjoy reading and knowing how things used to be. Of course, it should have a wide appeal because the story and illustrations are wonderful. I cannot imagine any child not liking it.
P.S. I have tried, to no avail, to find the publisher to see if they have any other similar books. Do you have an address for them? The telephone directory has no listing for them.

Book Description
Study of the Geography of 1 Enoch 17-19 examines the travels of the patriarch Enoch who is given a guided tour of extraordinary and at times terrifying places located throughout the cosmos. Coblentz Bautch clarifies the text of 1 Enoch 17-19 by explaining how the sites described relate to one another geographically and by reconstructing the mental map of the geography that lies behind the textual descriptions. Especially provocative is the consideration of sources from the ancient Near East, Hebrew Bible and the world of Hellenistic Judaism that may have informed the world view of 1 Enoch 17-19 and parallel traditions. Through this study an important facet of apocalypses is illumined: their portrayal of geography and sacred space.
