Book Description

One wedding. No funeral.
One unqualified catastrophe.

"Dominic" was the little white lie thirty-and-still-unwed Sophy Metcalfe told to soothe her nagging mother. But now her perfect sister Belinda is tying the knot, and Sophy's going to have to produce the charming, successful, ideal boyfriend she invented -- since the genuine article vanished after a single, resoundingly unsuccessful evening. Desperate, she hires a male escort sight unseen to get her through the Nuptials from Hell. But the trouble with white lies is they tend to multiply -- especially at a gala disaster filled with new intrigues and old flames. And the trouble with Josh, her hired date, is he's kind of cute, in a rugged, too-sexy-for-his-own-good way. And then there's the biggest trouble of all -- because every wedding day is followed by a night. And, of course, a morning after ...

3 out of 5 stars The Trouble with This Novel.......2007-05-07

Sophy Metcalfe's mother has a 1950's mentality; she wants Sophy to marry. Without building on the relationship between mother and daughter, Ms. Young, the author, weaves her story.

Sophy finds Josh Carmichael aka "Dominic" from an escort service. To appease her mother, she passes him off as her beloved. What unfolds is all too predictable. This might not have been a dreadful book if it wasn't so reminiscent of Bridgette Jones' Diary. Bridgette had a weight problem; Sophy has a weight problem. Bridgette craves cigarettes ("fags"); Sophy craves cigarettes ("fags"). Bridgette is jilted by her former lover; Sophy is jilted by her former lover.

What is missing is originality and prose so witty, we can't stop laughing. If you're looking for a refreshingly comical novel, this isn't it. Re-read either of the two Bridgette novels or try Susan Elizabeth Phillips for a true romantic comedy extravaganza.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie.......2006-08-02

I read this long before it was thought to be a movie - so sight unseen (the movie that is), a great read and seriously funny! MUST READ FIRST and hopefully, you and I won't be disappointed by the movie as I know it can't get the entire point across!

3 out of 5 stars Better to see the movie.......2006-06-26

As an English as second language reader, this book is simple and easy to read. Elisabeth Young really presents a simple, enjoyable and can not wait to the end book.

I have seen the movie, and I think contain between movie and book are not the same. However, both have own attention point.
I bought the book because I have seen the movie earlier.
For me, I still prefer the movie. Maybe if I read the book first, my opinion can be different.

5 out of 5 stars A great light read!.......2006-04-12

I fell in love with The Wedding Date! When I heard it was based on a book, I went out and bought it right away!
I loved this book just as much as the movie! It wasn't anything like the movie except for the hiring-an-escort-to-take-to-your-sister's-wedding part. Their were other great characters and a lot of funny moments. When you are a busy mom like me with a stressful job, its nice to escape into a light-hearted story like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Love For Hire.......2006-03-17

I really loved this book. If you're expecting the same story as in "The Wedding Date," which was loosly based on this book, don't worry. You can enjoy both without any plot spoilers! Elizabeth Young makes you laugh out loud as you follow a "desperate" young woman on her quest for a decent date to her sister's wedding. There are twists and turns that all lead to belly laughs and deep sighs! What a great story!

4 out of 5 stars One of the most helpful wedding books around........2003-09-28

Believe me. I've read just about every Wedding book out there.
Good advice and tips. Example: Organize your guest list by using index cards. Include names, addresses, gifts sent, RSVP, etc.
This way you can keep track of everything in one box.
Overall, this is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......1999-04-26

We loved the way the book gave such creative ideas which inspiered us to have such a Fun and special wedding. If you are planning to have a creative wedding this is the book to read!

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful and inspiring. A must-buy for newlyweds-to-be!.......1999-04-25

My fiance and I looked at dozens of wedding books, but this was the only one that was hip enough for our tastes. We wanted to find a way to mix our personal ideas and what was meaningful to us with traditional wedding arrangements. This book couldn't have been more perfect. And it was fun to read.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough unique ideas in this book!.......1998-07-12

I was looking for a book with a lot of unique ideas and was very disappointed to find this book sparcely packed with unique ideas. Each chapter had a couple of personal stories and very little substance on the actual topic.

I really enjoyed this book because it was unpredictable and the main character, Sophy, was so great. Made me laugh out loud a few times too. Very well written and an enjoyable read - great for the beach. The movie however is utter crap. They get it so wrong and a there's a lot of plot holes.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book.........2005-12-23

This book title has been transformed into a movie. Ive yet to watch it since it has not hit Kuala Lumpur's cinemas. I read this book twice & I did not want the story to end actually.. its simply amazing. Though Sophy is kind of 'neurotic' but along the way she makes good couple with Josh Carmichael..

5 out of 5 stars Creative Guide and 1001 Ideas for Your Wedding .......2007-04-15

Gail Oliver and Gisele Sullivan have been re-writing, re-editing and re-releasing their wedding guide since the first edition in 1999. They now have the 2007 guide so you will want the newest version, but this is a review for the guide just before from 2006. The topics include:

          Engagement Photos
          Invitations
          Wedding Shower
          Registering for Wedding Gifts
          The Ceremony
          Bride and Bridesmaids
          Groomsmen
          Flower Girls and Ring Beareres
          Bouquets
          Decorations
          Music
          Transportation
          Wedding Photographs
          Video
          The Reception
          Seating
          Wedding Party Introductions
          Menu
          Entertainment
          Toasts & Speeches
          Thank You Notes
          Wedding Album

The ideas for taking specific types of photographs is worth the price of the book. Instead of being indoors for a picture, why not go horse riding or take a picture by a famous landmark. They also give you hints about where to find "wedding stickers" for your invitations and the unique feature of this guide is the wedding finds with hyperlinks directly to the websites you are interested in, so you can find information fast.

The "Things to Do for Each Other" gives you ideas for gifts and letters you can give each other right before the wedding. I like the idea of a shower for "guy gifts" as well and lots of the ideas include both the groom and the bride so the groom is more a part of the wedding from the start.

"Charter a small party of sailboat and take the entire wedding party out on a lake for a few hours on a sunny day."

This idea worked very well, but also works just for the bridesmaids and mothers to get away for an afternoon. We tried this for my wedding and it was really fun to have a catered lunch on a boat. For wedding party gifts this was an excellent idea:

"A gift certificate to their favorite restaurant or one of yours would definitely come in handy, especially the day after the wedding when they probably won't feel like cooking."

Imagine making homemade candles for your guests as wedding favors or there is a very adventurous idea of a wedding favor you make on the day of the wedding with a wedding picture. Ideas for making replica wedding albums for your parents is a nice thoughtful way to say thank you.

If you enjoy this guide, you can write the authors and they might send you a free bonus of a Theme Wedding package for Christmas, Valentine's and Beach Weddings. Gail & Gisele's wedding guide has so many creative ideas it is truly amazing they are all in one place. With this guide you can create memories to last your entire life and you will have one of the most unique weddings on the planet. With the 1,001 ideas in this book, you will be sure to have a memorable day and lots of wonderful photographs and mementos from your wedding day.

In the conclusion of Beverley's Three Guys Called George trilogy, Major "Hawk" Hawkinville returns from the horrors of Waterloo to find his father incapacitated by a stroke, the estate coffers nearly emptied by his father's legal maneuverings to gain the title of Lord Deveril, and the villagers looking to him to make necessary, but costly, repairs. Hawk sees no solution but to marry for money, and if he can marry the heiress to the Deveril estates his stricken father believes himself entitled to, so much the better. But when Hawk actually meets the so-called Devil's Heiress, he has a difficult time reconciling the image of the grasping, promiscuous woman his father so vividly painted for him with the slightly mousy, Mary Wollstonecraft-quoting Clarissa Greystone he seeks to seduce and wed. But even an innocent like Clarissa has secrets, deadly secrets that endanger not only her future happiness but also her very life. Can she trust Hawk, a self-proclaimed fortune hunter, to help her? Can Hawk learn to trust--and to love--Clarissa even when he believes she had something to do with the murder of her affianced, the debauched Lord Deveril? It's a case of "Who's on first?" with a violent tug-of-war between Clarissa's powerful allies and the forces that seek to harm her. Jo Beverley continues her string of hits with her trademark complexity and real characters. --Alison Trinkle

4 out of 5 stars Devil's heiress one of best in Rouge's series.......2007-10-10

Clarissa was the wimpy young miss from one of the earlier Rogue books who was betrothed to the depraved Lord Deveril against her will and she ran to Lady Rogue Beth for help. In that book, Blanche, a stage actress kills Deveril in self defense and the rogue's concoct a plan without Clarissa's knowledge leaving a will declaring Clarissa as his beneficiary.

Hawk, a war hero, finds out his father has made a deal to buy the title of Lord Deveril at the expense of the beloved home manor, Hawk in the Vale. In order to save the estate, Hawk must either marry money or prove Clarissa murdered Lord Deveril and forged the will so that the money will revert to the new Lord Deveril. After meeting Clarissa, Hawk battles his emotions because he is falling for the gentle young woman, but knows he must either deceive her into marriage or put her life in peril to gain the needed funds. Clarissa has resigned herself to spinsterhood but after meeting Hawk, knows she wants everything life has to offer, marriage, children and happiness ever after. Clarissa suspects Hawk is after her fortune but she loves him anyway.

I liked the passion of these characters and their willingness to forgive to maintain their love. This was my favorite of the rogue series even though Hawk isn't actually one of the "Rogues", the characters are from the Rogue series.

              5 out of 5 stars The Devil's Heiress.......2006-08-22

Great book! Jo Beverly can write a great story, this one kept me on the edge. I was so eager for Hawk and Clarissa to get together that I could not put the book down. Jo Beverly is definately going on my list of great novels. Now I'm looking for the books of the other characters in this story.

3 out of 5 stars A reasonable tale but not completely satisfying.......2006-02-26

This was the first book by Jo Beverley that I have read, and by the end I realised that it was the third book she had written about this group of characters (The Georges) and she has also written several other books about the Rogues (who also feature in this novel). Although it didn't matter that I hadn't read the other books, there were quite a lot of characters to get to grips with, and they seemed rather one-dimensional in this book. I expect if I'd read the others before this I would have found them more satisfying.

The basic premise of the story is that Clarissa Greystone is about to be launched into society as a young heiress; she was formerly forcibly engaged to Lord Deveril, an unpleasant man who was killed - was Clarissa the killer? - and his Will found near the body left all his money to his fiancée. We are also introduced to Hawk (George Hawkinville) whose father has worked to prove that he is the next Viscount Deveril, thus Hawk will be, in due course, Lord Deveril. And when Hawk meets Clarissa (originally hoping to prove she's a murderess so that her money will come to him as the true heir of the murdered Lord Deveril) he finds her intriguing and sets to woo her. When they realise they are in love she is worried about telling him she was an accomplice to murder, and he feels she won't have him because he will become Viscount Deveril and she hated the former Viscount Deveril. To me, this is a plot weakness; of course she has bad memories of her former fiancée, but would ANYONE seriously think that just because someone has the same name you wouldn't marry them? Surely not!

Anyway, their romance moves from Cheltenham to Brighton and then to Hawk's home village of Hawk In The Vale with the requisite stolen kisses, an adopted cat, various other characters interacting and then an elopement which fails. The book ends with a kidnapping and rescue attempt and the hero and heroine finally get over the hurdles they have put before each other and get married.

Although this book was well written and the period detail was enjoyable, overall I found that the story and plot lacked a certain direction. Thérèse Bellaire is meant to be a fairly major pivot of the plot but she barely features until she has her big scene right at the end. The hero's experiences of Waterloo are interesting, as is his friendship with the other Georges, but we never really understand quite what bound these three men together and therefore why those bonds are so sorely tested by his romance with Clarissa.

I would read other books by Jo Beverley but I think it would probably serve me better to read them in order.

And a random side-point - I have read three books recently by different authors with a Lord Deveril or Deverill. Popular name!

but the story itself is pretty same old, same old, regency stuff. This book is one of the 3 in the "3 heroes" anthology and
it is the best of the 3. It's an ok read but not a keeper although the characters are very explicit and involved and likeable..

3 out of 5 stars DON'T READ THESE OUT OF ORDER!!.......2004-08-17

I was so lost reading this book that I couldn't even enjoy the plot. There were so many extra characters that I was lost trying to keep track of everyone. If I'd known before I read it, that it was part of a series, I wouldn't have read it at all. If you've read all the other rogue and george series, than you may enjoy this book that connects back to all the characters. Still not thoroughly impressed with Jo Beverly, which is depressing since she's written so many regency novels, my favorites. I'm trying Hazard now and it's holding my attention, but barely. Not sure where Beverly goes wrong, I just have a hard time getting into the characters.

Most of Ruth Plumly Thompson's Oz books cannot compare to those of L. Frank Baum. That is still true but her later ones are a lot closer and show a steady improvement. In general, she tends to use her own character creations for the main story line and rely on Baum's for window dressing. That is still true but it is also true that the quality of writing for her own characters is better. That is the case with Peter in this volume

This is Peter's 3rd trip to the magical kingdoms. He is a young boy from Philadelphia and is a strong character with all the youthful exuberance to be expected of a young boy. In this story, he hooks up with a soft hearted pirate and a king whose subjects have rebelled. They learn that the pirate's mutinous crew and the king's erstwhile subjects have joined forces with the gnome king who is out to conquer Oz yet again. Most of the action in this book takes place outside of Oz. That was the case with some of Baum's best work and it also seems to be the case for Thompson.

The adventure story is a good one and John R. Neil's illustrations must be considered definitive for all things Oz. This one is worth the read.

"The ultimate of human happiness is to be found in contemplation."

In offering this proposition of Thomas Aquinas to our thought, Josef Pieper uses traditional wisdom in order to throw light on present-day reality and present-day psychological problems. What, in fact, does one pursue in pursuing happiness? What, in the consensus of the wisdom of the early Greeks, of Plato and Aristotle, of the New Testament, of Augustine and Aquinas, is that condition of perfect bliss toward which all life and effort tend by nature?

In this profound and illuminating inquiry, Pieper considers the nature of contemplation, and the meaning and goal of life.

5 out of 5 stars What Do You Seek?.......2007-09-02

We are often tempted to think that our search for happiness will be fulfilled by making or doing, by trying new experiences. Pieper in this book argues that the source of happiness is fundamentally simpler and yet more difficult to attain. He expresses in this book how the source and fulfillment of happiness are found through contemplation. I won't clarify this too much, because I think this book is an extremely worthwhile read. It can be dense at times, but struggling with it proved to be very rewarding. Pieper goes against many of the prevailing modern beliefs, but in the end his answers prove to be more sound and satisfying than many other answers out there.

5 out of 5 stars A True Work of Art.......2006-11-06

Josef Pieper gave us a true and indisputable work of art in this short book. The theme is that man's happiness is found in contemplation, in seeing, in being together with, in the presence of the only beloved object that fully satisfies: God who is perfect goodness, truth, and beauty. The face of God is revealed in our contemplation of what He created. So it is apt that in the elegant lyrical beauty of this book we see the God we love. You have to read the book to experience its marvelous reflection of the Beauty we love. Anyone who has ever loved deeply will intuitively recognize what Pieper describes as man's highest happiness.

4 out of 5 stars Is there one greatest good for all?.......2006-02-03

What is man's greatest good? What is the source of deepest happiness? Is it the same for all people, or is it impossible to say that there is a greatest good, a greatest happiness that would apply to everyone?

Josef Pieper explores these questions by explaining and defending St. Thomas' doctrine that contemplation is the deepest happiness of Man.

"Contemplation is man's greatest happiness" is a concept completely foreign to contemporary American society. It requires a fair amount of exploration and explanation just to understand what the statement is actually asserting. Because we tend to focus so strongly on action, and view contemplation as "doing nothing," we are very apt to completely miss St. Thomas' point.
To contemplate is, at the deepest level, to see something as it truly is. It is not just seeing the external characteristics of an object, but in a sense it is "seeing through" the object to the Love and Joy of the Creator of the Universe. To contemplate is to dwell in the reality of things.

My description falls far short of providing any real clarity. For that, I refer you to Josef pipers book. It is short and accessible and rewards a careful reading.

                                  Some choice quotes:

Quoting Augustine: "No matter how much you labor, you labor to this end: that you may see."

"...everything holds and conceals at bottom a mark of its divine origin; that one who catches a glimpse of it 'sees' that this and all things are 'good' beyond all comprehension; and that, seeing this, he is happy. Here in sum is the whole doctrine of the contemplation of earthly creation." [pg. 88]

"This, incidentally, may suggest that the greatest menace to our capacity for contemplation is the incessant fabrication of tawdry empty stimuli which kill the receptivity of the soul..." [pg. 102]

There is a way to happiness that is meant for all, but the path is known by few. It is a tradition that has existed in Judeo-Christianity from the beginning, founded on the Scriptures, and nurtured by the Church. It is the way of prayer and contemplation, and its goal is to become fully human and alive, integrated and mature, through a transforming union with Jesus Christ through which we become truly ourselves. This book is about that transforming union--God s plan for our happiness.

                                    Book Description

Aristotle's teaching on the subject of happiness has been a topic of intense philosophical debate in recent years. Did he hold that happiness consists of the exercise of all the virtues, moral and intellectual, or that supreme happiness is to be found only in the practice of philosophical contemplation? The question is vital to the relevance of his ethics today. Anthony Kenny helped to set the terms of the debate a quarter of a century ago. Later, in his book The Aristotelian Ethics (Clarendon Press, 1978), he argued that Aristotle's Eudemian Ethics has no less claim than the better-known Nicomachean Ethics to be taken as a late and definitive statement of Aristotle's position. In this new book he refines his view of the relationship between the two treatises and shows how to reach a consensus on the interpretation of the texts. Aristotle's admirers struggle to read a comprehensive account of the supreme happiness into the Nicomachean Ethics; Dr Kenny argues that those who are prepared to take the neglected Eudemian Ethics with equal seriousness are able to presrve their admiration intact without doing violence to any of the relevant texts.
