A Rich, Full, Rewarding Family Saga.......2001-08-10
The Villagers by Edward Field & Neil Derrick is a wonderfully rich, rewarding novel about the fictional ýEndicottý family from 1845 to 1975 in Greenwich Village, New York. While the Endicotts are the main characters in this long, eventful story, Greenwich Village itself is a background character of sorts. From a small, separate village to the north of the city in 1845, to the integral, exciting and lively neighborhood of 1975, the village ýlivesý in the background, growing and changing over time as do the Endicotts themselves. This is essentially the story of three generations: Tomýs in the 1840ýs, Patrickýs in the 1880ýs, and Pollyýs in the 1930ýs. It is rich, varied, touching. The authors manage to make you care about these characters, drawing each one deftly, fully, making each main character real and believable. It is amazing to me that two separate authors could create so unified a fictional story and do it so successfully.
The authors of this novel have created a very real family. To bring this story alive, many famous people (and events) of the past become minor characters: Walt Whitman, Henry James, The Civil War, the Stock Market Crash of the 20ýs, the Stonewall Riots of the late 60ýs. This helps to place the family saga into the context of the various time periods. This is an excellent book, a rewarding book. The frequent tragedy is countered by the strength of many of the characters, especially Patrick, Elizabeth, and Polly. While it is very long, it is great fun to read.

Plot Summary: The story begins when young Tom Endicott and his bride, Fanny move to the village from the city in 1845. Tom doesnýt realize the fragile hold Fanny has on her sanity yet, nor that her family had literally married her off to be rid of her and exiled the two to the then far-off village of Greenwich. Sexual frustrations mount as Tom, due to Fannyýs resistance, is unable to make love with his wife after their first time. They have a child from that first time, but when Tom in a fit of frustrated passion forces himself upon Fanny, the resulting child, Claude is rejected by its mother and grows up to be a withdrawn, quiet boy, who dies an early death from an opium addiction. Tom, in frustration turns to the familyýs Irish maid, Molly, a lusty woman who enjoys sex. This passionate affair leads to a pregnancy. It is a boy, Tomýs illegitimate son, Patrick. Patrick grows up with his mother Molly in the Irish ghetto and it is he who will eventually carry the Endicott name into the next generation.
Patrick eventually is reunited with the Endicotts when Claude and Molly die. He becomes the son Tom always wanted. Patrick marries Elizabeth, Claudeýs childhood friend and produces the next generation of Endicotts. This becomes the longest saga in the Endicott story as Patrick becomes one of the movers and shakers in the growth and development of the village and the growing metropolis of New York. When his 10-year-old son dies, Patrick turns inward and his wife Elizabeth turns to an old family friend for solace which results in another illegitimate child, Polly. But Patrick, thinking Polly is his daughter, is rejuvenated and he fathers a second son, Eugene. Eugene is a supreme disappointment to Patrick and ýdaughterý Polly is his life now. When Eugene marries and has a son himself, Seth, Patrick accepts his grandson with great joy. However, Eugene, confused and unhappy, leaves his wife and young son and returns to his family home in Greenwich Village.
The next great turn of events is when Patrick catches Eugene in the basement having sex with a workman modernizing the family house with new electrical wiring. Shame drives Eugene away to self-destructiveness. His sister Polly cannot forgive him but his mother Elizabeth tries to protect him from his own downward spiral. Patrick never really recovers. When Patrick finally dies, the family saga shifts to Polly and Eugene. Eugene, finally accepting his gay sexuality becomes a writer of note, even a celebrated playwright. Polly more and more accepts her gay brother as her own life becomes entangled in sex and alcohol. Eugene suddenly dies in a horrible accident, just as he is getting to know his own son Seth. Through much anguish, Polly finally defeats her own demons and becomes a strong, giving woman. Polly works hard to keep her extended family of cousins, nephews, and other relatives together. Much tragedy follows this family, but Polly triumphs, saving her family members from their own self-destructiveness over and over. In the end Polly herself, now well into her 80ýs in 1975, dies a quiet, peaceful death, the last Endicott in Greenwich Village.
A true gem!.......2001-07-09
It has been a long time since I've enjoyed a book so much that it has kept me off the computer for hours at a time. This wonderful book is full of characters you really come to care about. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next while at the same time dreading it coming to an end. If ever a family saga deserved a sequel this is the one! The only complaint I have is that it wasn't twice as long...
If You Love New York This is For You.......2001-03-16
"I am five hundred pages through "The Villagers" and am already feeling bereft that the tale is nearly finished. I would love to see a production on PBS! The characters are wonderful, all so different [...], and of course I admire the treatment of the women."
Wow!.......2000-10-26
I'm into Villagers and it is wonderful. The amount of historical research is staggering--it could be used in history classes as a text. Why it hasn't been picked up yet by Hollywood, I can't imagine. Sex too hot to handle? It's bound to make it, especially now that movies are returning to big block busters--this in its breadth is like the movie, Sunshine. And the pace is absolutely galloping. I'm whizzing along and can't stand to put it down until my eyes burn with fatigue.

A searing novel of social protest.......2001-06-10
"The Villagers," a novel by Jorge Icaza of Ecuador, was first published in 1934. It has been translated into English by Bernard Dulsey. I think of "The Villagers" as a sort of Ecuadoran counterpart to "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (the classic anti-slavery novel by United States author Harriet Beecher Stowe). Like that earlier novel, Icaza's book is an impassioned expose of racially-charged violence and oppression.
"The Villagers" tells the story of the exploitation of Ecuadoran Indians by whites who are intent on taking economic advantage of the Indians' homeland. Icaza paints a fascinating portrait of the conflicts and twisted connections among three major groups: Indians, whites, and "cholos" (those of mixed blood). The "gringos," or white North Americans, form a sinister fourth group that lurks menacingly behind the scenes of the unfolding drama.
The novel is full of vivid, graphic details--lice infestation, a worm-infected wound, rape, suffering, and death. Icaza mercilessly satirizes the lust and greed of the white landowner, Don Alfonso. Icaza also savagely critiques the complicity of the church (in the form of the hypocritical village priest) in the abuse of the Indians. And the author also exposes the insidious debt bondage that turns nominally "free" people into virtual slaves.
Some of the more villainous characters seem a bit one-dimensional, but in my opinion the many strengths of the book outweigh this flaw. "The Villagers" is a powerful work of social protest that deserves a wide readership.
JORGE ICAZA HAD A DREAM.......1998-12-21
Jorge Icaza had a dream just like Martin Luther King, except his dream was not meant toward the United States, his dream was meant toward his people of Ecuador who, like people in the United States, are prejudiced against people who are of different races, and different economic statuses, etc. Jorge Icaza wrote his first novel The Villagers as the first step (in a series of steps) to make the dream come true. In it he portrays the Indian people of Ecuador as they truly are, as well as the landowners and government leaders, and the ways in which these ruthlessly treat the Indians. Religion plays a big role in this novel. Icaza leaves no prisoners, everyone in Ecuadorean society is criticized, including the mestizoes, persons of both European and American Indian descent. Icaza's 1934 novel is studied in many of the top universities of the United States in classes of Spanish, Comparative Literature, and Anthropology. I suggest this book to those who are interested in learning about Latin America and its peoples. I think people will be shocked and appalled. Icaza is by far the most important Indianist novelist Latin America ever brought forth, as well as one of Ecuador's most finest and important writers.
Truths that only the daring and indignant can tell.......1998-12-05
I read this book many years ago and it is the only book that has told of that brutality that is endemic and daily in this beautiful, yet sad country of Ecuador. Ycasa is the real heroe in our historical voyage. He has stuck his neck out and has told a story-amongs many- that reveal the destructive, oppresive, and racist nature of his society. His sense of justice and solidarity with the poor and the indians are as powerful as his indignation of the established oligarchy and it's system.
Icaza, comparable only to Tolstoy........1998-10-12
Vile language, adultery, human suffering, courage, fear, love, guile--Icaza portrays TRUE HUMANITY in his first book The Villagers (Huasipungo),one of this century's greatest novels. As a professor of French and Spanish literature I have had many students ask me who Jorge Icaza was and why there are no other novels by Icaza available for them to read. The answer is that Jorge Icaza is one of the most complex writers in the Spanish language. Translating him is a task that no one wishes to take on because it may take them their whole lives to complete. It is sad because Icaza wrote some of the greatest novels of this century, ie., El Chulla Romero y Flores. As a translator of 4 novels, I myself am terrified of Icaza's prose. Jorge Icaza is the author of 7 novels (he left behind the draft for an 8th novel), 4 collections of short stories, and 7 plays. Bernard M. Dulsey did a great job in the translation. Of course he had help from Icaza himself, something which no translator can now have since Icaza died in 1972. Readers are fortunate to have this novel available in the English. Perhaps the greatest pre-Magic novel of Latin-America.
A sickening society and the author who wrote about it........1998-08-24
I have been obsessed with this book for four years. The Villagers (Huasipungo) presents some of the most passionate, horrific and sad events ever to take place in fiction. In his most famous book Jorge Icaza shows a part of Ecuadorian society that the entire world refused to take notice of or do anything about.
Don Alfonso Pereira belongs to the property-owning class of Ecuador. The book takes us along his journey to his hacienda and introduces us to his Indian and mestizo peons that work and labor for him in exchange for a piece of land where they cultivate there vegetables, raise there animals, and build their huts - a piece of land called a "huasipungo."
The rape of an Indian woman, adulterous threesomes, savage sex... All this shows that Icaza was holding nothing back. When the book first appeared in Latin America in the 1930s readers were enraged. But despite the rage of Ecuadorians the book was quickly translated into more than 20 other languages: Russian, Polish. Italian... etc. Finally it was translated into the English in the 1960s. There are things in this book which no writer in the world would have dared write about in the 1930s or even today.
This book is so influential that a famous, contemporary hard-core band is named after it: Huasipungo. This book is a must read for those that love profound lyricism and brutal truth.

Nice easy book.......2007-03-31
Nice easy book to read. Good discussion in our book club. Not a meaty book, but good for a fast read.
Mediocre.......2006-07-19
I love LaVyrle Spencer but I had a problem with Then Came Heaven. I gave it 3 stars because of the first 90 pages that dealt with Krystyna's death and funeral, and the description of the school, the nuns' house and the description of the individual nuns. I tried to like the idea of a relationship between Eddie and Jean but I just couldn't do it. And believe me, I really wanted to. I did like the descriptions of Thanksgiving at The Olzack's and Christmas at the Potlocki's, and I enjoyed reading about Browerville. (We drove through Browerville in 1980 and I vividly remember driving by the church!)
After I read the book I thought if someone else had written it she might have eventually written a "prequel" about Eddie and Krystyna's childhoods and marriage (after all, they were married for 10 years) and also Jean's childhood and what exactly made her decide to become a nun when she was "just eleven." There were a lot of interesting characters in the book, i.e., Irene, Rosella Potlocki, Romaine and Rose, etc., that would have been worth developing.
A Heavenly Place to Worship God........2006-07-12
The church on the cover looks like a Russian Orthodox with the onion top architecture I love. One summer vacation, while driving through the countryside of Pennsylvania on the way to Valley Forge (then on to Longwood Gardens, near New Jersey), the place was full of fabulous churches. All I'd ever seen in my hometown and the small town were not exquisite like this one. Sometimes, I'd stop to get a closer view if the church had a special feature the others didn't have. I was not into photography then, or I would have had a field day.
Eddie seeks help from the nun teacher of his young daughters after the death of his wife. Soon, a close relationship developed. Danny and Cecil received a Catholic school education, thanks to their mother. Perhaps she was aware of the dumbing down I knew nothing of until now.
After two months of Hell at the hands of Chuck and his crew there, it was Heaven to be able to write again. Til now when Wink decided he had to enter the fray once again and cause some trouble for me. It won't last. God punishes those who intentionally hurt others.
Just a wonderfully sweet love story .......2005-08-12
What does God plan for your life? Just when you think that everything is God-blessed and the way it should be, suddenly a tragedy occurs that might make you shake your faith in Him. The year is 1950 and Eddie Olzcak had a wonderful life with his beloved wife and two young daughters. Eddie is a devout Catholic who works as a janitor in the local Catholic school, who rings the bells in the church for all the Masses, and helps out the nuns in the convent. One afternoon, his wife's car is hit by a train and she is killed instantly, shattering the perfect life he had with her. He is sad, angry, confused, he misses his wife terribly, he is lonely, but he knows he must go on with his life, and he does....Sister Regina, one of the nuns in the convent, who teaches 3rd and 4th grade at the school Eddie works at, and has his two daughters in her class, has been unhappy for some time with her life, wondering if this is the life God really wanted for her. She is part of the Benedictan order of nuns that has strict codes and follows a Holy Rule that forbids, among other things, any type of secular interaction that involve emotions or feelings; her life is supposed to be directed at constant prayer. So when Eddie's wife dies, Sister Regina feels at a loss; she wants to hug the children, but she can't; she wants to counsel Eddie, but she can't, and during this time, she realizes that being a nun isn't her calling. If she's not a nun, does that make her any less holy than Eddie's wife, Krystyna, who was a wonderful woman, who helped out in the community, who loved her husband and children dearly? Something also happens to Sister Regina during these next few months: she's getting feelings for Eddie, and he senses it, and Eddie discovers that he's starting to feel the same way about her. Both have guilt...Eddie wonders if it's too soon to love again after his wife dies, and Sister Regina wonders if it's a sin to fall in love with a man just because she's a nun. This is just a wonderful story about how love can be found again after a tragic circumstance and Lavyrle Spencer handles it beautifully. Isn't love between a man and a woman a gift from God? Eddie and Sister Regina find out that it is. I really enjoyed this story and it was a great final book for LaVyrle Spencer to write before she retired. I will miss her writing.
A Slower Place, A Complex Time.......2005-06-02
I think all of the reviews here miss the point.
Maybe I have a different perspective because I was lucky enough to stumble across the book on tape first. I bought the abridged version first, but the story was so very engrossing, I eventually checked out the un-abridged edition. The telling of this story must be very different than the reading because I found it very compelling and couldn't wait for the next chapter.
In this modern day, we rush. We move at a break neck pace in everything we do, even our relationships. We rush in where angels fear to tread and then back out at leisure and on to the next.
Welcome to Browerville. A slower pace; a town you might pass on the highway and wonder for a moment about the lives lived there. Not a more "innocent" time, a cliche one reviewer falls back on, as most do when referring to the mid 1900's. This story is earthy and practical. The characters heart-breakingly human and real, deserving of the time and care given to them.
What doesn't happen here, and what I think is unimaginable for some of the reviewers is that these two people actually do what is best for them but they wait until the right time to do so. They don't ride roughshod over other people to get what they want. They don't think only of themselves. Their journey is one of shared agony and love, both unspoken. How they come to finally verbalize what they know the other is feeling and how it develops into romance is a subtle refrain in this story I feel many have missed.
I found their inner and and outer struggles daunting. How they deal with their growing feelings for each other, their families, their community and their beliefs is nothing short of an everyday miracle reminding us of the strength and the power of true love.
A story not to be missed and definitely worthy as Spencer's last effort.

Cool.......2005-02-25
This book is also my favorite book in the Battletech serises. I would love to own all of the Classic Battletech books. People should really read this book, Call of Duty.
Awesome book.......2004-05-27
Call of Duty is one of the best battletech books I have and probably will ever read. Pardoe is an execellent writer. General Archer Chistrifori has been assigned by Victor Davion to go to the planet Odessa and recruit the merc unit Snord's Irregulars from the Loyalist Count Fisk's control. But as things progress but Archer's Avengers and Snord's Irregulars are closer than they think to total destruction
Absolutely Gripping!.......2004-04-18
Call of Duty, by Blaine Lee Pardoe, is my personal favorite Battletech book, which surprised me, because, as far as Battletech novels are concerned, I have always preferred Stackpole to Pardoe.
This is a very exciting book, and it is never certain what is exactly going on.
Victor Davion has ordered Archer Christofi and his Archer's Avengers to Odessa, to try and sway the famous merc group Snord's Irregulars, led by Rhonda Snord, over to Victor's side against Katrina Steiner-Davion and her Lyran Alliance. However, the ruling party, in association with Katrina (who is my LEAST favorite battletech character) have prepared for the occasion. When the Irregulars do not protect Odessa willingly, the Duke of Odessa will do whatever he can to draw them into the fight.
I would highly reccommend this book to any Battletech fan, whether newbie or veteran.
A Return to Honor.......2002-06-05
This story continues the exploits of Archers Avengers. The Avengers are ordered to the planet Odessa in order to convince Snord's Irregulars not to renew their contract with Katrina Steiner in the hopes of helping Victor regain control of the splintered FedCom. The storyline is predictable and Archer reminds me of the characters from the old BTech novel Ideal War with the introduction of the Knights of the Inner Sphere. We continue to see the growing conflict within the FedCom, but the last few BTech novels seem mostly filler rather than introducing pertinent elements into this storyline. Hopefully, we'll see some more plot development in the next few novels as it appears that the civil war storyline is winding down. Overall, a good read, but nothing too heavy. As always, I recommend some of the earlier Michael Stackpole novels for background of the FedCom
Sweat.......2002-03-22
This is an up in your face book.It is 1 of my favorites out of the many battletech and mechwarrior books. The Whole book is action packed.I read it again and again.

Beautiful Gift.......2007-09-12
I have found that gift books are a good and easy way to look into a Christian writer's beliefs, even if it's a writer that you don't generally prefer. I confess I don't like Lori Wick's fiction, but I never really had a chance to look into the life of the lady herself. In this book, amid Wick's numerous reflections and stories, I found a lovely woman who is, in fact, not unlike me!
I may not like Wick's fiction, but her non-fiction tales in this book are a delight to read. I loved reading about her experiences as a mother, wife, and woman in general with God directing her life. Wick wonderfully relates life lessons with her experiences and applies the Gospel seamlessly to the struggles a Christian faces. Along with her inspiring stories are beautiful paintings and various quotes, both Biblical and otherwise, which blend together to make this book a gem to read.
I highly recommend this book as a gift to yourself or someone else. I know I'll be repeatedly visiting its pages in the years to come :)
Great! Amazing Art and Words from the heart,..........2000-04-13
I only looked at this book at the bookstore in the mall and knew that I had to order it for my grandmother for Mother's Day. It was beautiful. The paintings are gorgeous, just like Victorian style. I loved it! I suggest that everyone who has a mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, or friend who loves Victorian era art, words from the heart, Lori Wick, and has a quest to know God, through his Son, Jesus Christ, should buy this book. It will not let you down.

Develop An Attitude of Gratitude.......2006-08-28
Here's a powerful little book which will help increase the thankfulness in your life. Touching and positive personal stories combine with simple practical advice and Scripture to make this book a solid help for anyone.
As Carole Lewis writes on page 14, "We can bring an attitude of thankfulness to any experience; and when we do, it's like a breath of fresh air rushing in and blowing away the dust of decay. Some people possess an attitude of gratitude more naturally than others. But all of us are called to step onto this path. That's what this book discusses at length. As we learn to clutivate a thankful heart, our grumbling and complaining will cease and be replaced by a spirit that blesses God, blesses those around us and even blesses ourselves. There is an answer to the question of what to do when life doesn't go perfectly: Give thanks in every situation in life."
As a gift or for yourself, anyone can gain from this book.
Becoming more Christ-like in our prayer life..........2006-05-28
...that's what this lovely little book teaches. Our prayer trainer, Jesus, prayed, "I thank you, Lord, that you have heard me." We, too, have so much to be thankful for--and Carole Lewis' book helps us develop gratefulness and humility. I highly recommend this book as a gift for others or yourself.
Authentic and biblical.......2006-04-12
A Thankful Heart is like a warm hug from this amazing author! Carole Lewis offers readers a glimpse into her own life, revealing a mosaic of sorrow and disappointment, which surprisingly ushers in times of Christian joy. No, she hasn't uncovered a secret remedy to the world's problems; she merely decided to take the Bible verses on thankfulness to heart.
As the current leader of First Place, a Christian weight-loss program, the author understands that the thoughts of the heart greatly influence the rest of the body. Being thankful in all situations is both a command from God as well as a choice to make. As believers gently rest in God's providence and direction, they can confidently praise Him in all circumstances. This inward spiritual trust then transcends to the physical realm, providing a tangible feeling of peace and joy. Yet, it all starts with a conscious decision.
Carole Lewis had to make this decision many times in her life. These pages allow readers to come alongside her as she hears the news of her daughter's death, files for bankruptcy, and provides support to her husband following a diagnosis of cancer. Each of these personal stories resounds with a stark sense of realism. As she reaches out through a veil of tears to embrace the biblical concept of giving thanks in all circumstances, grief gives way to gratitude. These pages literally tremble with the exchange of emotions and the excitement of drawing closer to the Lord in perfect trust.
A Thankful Heart pulses with a sense of authenticity and authority. - Joyce Handzo, Christian Book Previews.com
I have truly been blessed by this book........2006-01-25
What a terrific book. I have read a great many self-help books, both with and without a biblical focus. This is by far the best of them all. Carole gives many examples in each chapter on how to develop and put into practice "a thankful heart." As you read, it all begins to seem so obvious, and is truly life-changing. I thank God and Carole for this wonderful book.

A SMALL BOOK WITH A WARM MESSAGE.......2001-05-09
Mother's Day is just around the corner, so what do you give to someone who probably has more, scented candles, bubble bath, knick-knacks and nightgowns than she will ever use. The answer is quite simple ...you give her this delightful, nostalgic, warm and sentimental book while she is still with you to share the memories. The message contained in these few pages says what many of us do not know how to put into words. My mom died over twenty years ago and so much has happened in my life since then. I wish this wonderful book had been written years before; she would have enjoyed the poetry, photography and messages contained among the pages. It is a beautiful gift of love and appreciation that will touch the heart of mothers, and those filling the role of mothers, everywhere.
