5 out of 5 stars So funny I dropped it in the tub!!.......2006-08-13

I picked this book up after seeing Anita at the Women of Faith conference this year...my girlfriend grabbed it to read first, told me it was a must read! Well, she was right - laugh out loud funny and a lot of fun to share with others. I read some excerpts at a ladies tea at church today - I had 3 women come up to me afterwards and request my copy!! I am on Amazon buying them their own right now! Anita really knows how to remind us that God wants us to find joy in everything - even the tough days of our lives. I hope you buy one for yourself and a friend that needs a good, clean laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Full of "Purse-onality".......2006-08-01

This is certainly not a "read before bed" book. You'll be laughing so hard, you'll want to call your mother, sister or best friend to share the humorous, laugh-til-you-cry truths throughout the book. You read your own womanly frustrations interpreted from Anita's honest, humorous, and insightful point of view. Women from 20-80 will enjoy Anita's clean comedy. The best part is sharing the laughter with other women in your life(men won't get it). My copy has been passed around the country to mom, grandma, aunts, sisters, in-laws, friends, and friends of friends alike. You'll be sorry when you finish reading, but...good news, she has more outrageous, fabulous books available!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Commentary from a Christian Comedian.......2006-07-29

I laughed so hard at the Purse Driven Life because Anita Renfro tells it like it is for women. She reminds us that it is OK to laugh at the uniqueness of our situation and yet we have so much in common with other Christian women. Her account of the mammogram is hilarious. So many times you will find yourself thinking that sounds just like me. She is a Christian comedian and that is not a term you hear too often. You will want extra copies to share with your friends! I definitely recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect remedy.........2006-07-28

God has truly blessed Anita Renfroe with the gift to make you laugh so hard you'll almost pee your pants, and then make you see the vital importance of Christ being the center of our lives. If you love to laugh, and love to see the humor in everything, you will absolutely love the Purse-driven Life! Anita keeps it real by sharing her real life experiences as a wife and mother in this crazy world! If you are sad, or depressed..buy this book! It's the perfect remedy! (Buy it even if you're not sad!!) You won't be disappointed..and if you can, catch Anita in concert..you'll have a blast!!

Ok. So if you did not like the book, why are you complaining? Sell it on ebay & move on...but if you did like I did then you have great taste. This is my first brush with Ms. Renfroe & I cannot wait to read the new one. This is one of those things that I will buy more of to give to the women in my life.

2 out of 5 stars Frustrated and Saddened by the Attitude of This "Christian" Book.......2007-09-03

First an admission: I have not read the entire book, only a few excerpts. However, the sections I have read seem very typical of Renfroe. This book provides far too much fodder for anyone who considers evangelical women shopaholic airheads who have little concern for the world that Jesus wept over but instead need to get their shopping fixes and focus on decor, makeup, etc. Renfroe IS an entertaining writer--hence two stars and not just one--but the shallowness she seems to espouse is totally counter to a servant life style focused on Christ. Yes, she slips little messages into some sections, but she never challenges--and instead seems to glorify--the woman who spends frivolously just for the fun of it. From the first pages when she jokingly chides the woman who only has one purse or doesn't rearrange her furniture often, it is clear that she is not interested in any kind of serious thinking about how our behavior affects the world God has placed us in.

No, we are not called to a joyless existence as Christians, but to totally ignore the impact of such a consumerist mentality on the world around us is irresponsible and seems alien to our Savior's love and care for all around him. Please don't waste your money on this or similar books.

5 out of 5 stars More than a belly laugh!!!!.......2006-07-26

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Insight into Human Mind.......2007-10-06

Brookner creates a fascinating window into the interior monologues of human beings, particularly women. In Fanny you can see all the ways one can mentally reformat their experiences to try and make them more tolerable. You also see how practiced one can become at forgiving instead of becoming angry, and how we may not always be paying attention to those who really love us.

      5 out of 5 stars A Gripping Read.......2006-01-03

Frances Hinton is lonely and bored. She leads a highly regimeted life in the home of her youth, espouses the bourgeois virtues of hard work, stability, and responsibility, and takes no emotional risks. She has few friends and no confidant. She rarely goes out and has hardly any interests or entertainments. In brief, her world is static and very circumscribed. Although she has the talent, intelligence, and financial means to alter her life, and while she wishes desperately to do so, she is paralyzed -- with indecision, with fear, with lethargy? We are not sure, and this dilemma is the crux of the book.

Her supreme wish is for notice, acclaim, and love, and to this end she writes. She has published two short stories. Her tragedy is that she is an observer who wants to be observed. She discounts her natural gifts and virtues. She is not satisfied with the loyalty of her old friends but craves a different sort of friendship, an apprenticeship, with someone exciting, charismatic, careless, brutal. Equating living with agressiveness, she thinks that such a person will show her how (she actually takes notes) to seize and drain the cup of life.

Frances finds her mentor in Alix, the wife of one of the physicians at the medical research library where she works. Alix is everything Frances wants to be: opinionated, brash, charming, rude, selfish, grasping, and fatally charismatic. A collector of people, constantly on the lookout for a diversion, Alix adopts an elated Frances, and gleefully abets a budding romance between her and James, another physician at the library. For a while all seems well.

In Frances, Dr. Brookner has created a most intriguing and baffling character. She is deeply disturbed, but the first person narration makes it hard to tell what precisely is the matter with her. Because she appropriates blame for things that are not her fault, has low self-esteem, and is fearful when she should be angry, she might suffer from self-defeating personality disorder. It is sad that she cannot be happy with her lot, which objectively seen is a pretty nice one, and that her dissatisfaction leads her into such painful experiences.

Dr. Brookner makes wonderful use of symbolism in this book. The writing is, as usual, first rate. Dr. Brookner alternates sentence length and rhythm and the whole book falls very pleasingly on the ear, a heartbreakingly plaintive wail.

      4 out of 5 stars A Sad Introspective.......2002-07-16

How sad Fanny has made her life. What strikes me odd is that she is quite intelligent yet doesn't see that she may be to blame for the unimportant life she leads.

This novel is not the typical formula novel. There is no huge plot, no large turn in events, but just the thoughts of a young single girl in London. She is quite perceptive, if not overly contemplative when she meets and makes temporary friends with Nick and Alix. Then she meets James, and things don't seem so gloomy for her, for now she has reason not to hurry the days away.

I think this is a great book for what it's worth. Great literature minus a huge plot. The author does a great job in making a memorable character without having the reading see her through countless events.

      2 out of 5 stars Tiresome.......2000-07-12

(Can I say it without sounding sexist? I suppose not.) Yet another self-loathing woman author with a feminist axe to grind.

A good author with tremendous control over her art form, but tiresome nevertheless. The main character is so self absorbed that everything else is barely two dimentional.

I'd much prefer Alice Munroe for a protrail of individuals and relationships with depth and solidity. Someone who understands [or tries to] the world beyond herself.

Brookner never opens the door, not to let heself out or to let others in.

4 out of 5 stars Figuring Fanny Hinton.......1999-12-06

Some authors create characters so memorable that they refuse to be dislodged from our brains. These literary sailors scamper up into the rigging of our imagination and unfurl huge sails to carry us far. Such is Fanny Hinton of "Look at Me." Brookner makes the reader feel her embarrassment and anguish so deeply that, were the room in utter darkness and no one else present, one would still feel a pounding blush spread over one's face to read of it. "Look at Me" will grip you and not put you down. Unlike life itself for Fanny, it will not disappoint, for this novel's author is brilliant. She writes fiction the way a veteran cowpuncher rides the range: smoothly, with velvety confidence and her eyes fixed quietly on the certain goal ahead. Some Brookner themes are recurrent and, though effective, can become tiresome: the child of wealthy parents who, though plain in appearance, is as overwrought as a rococo clock; the tea and crumpets which are whipped out whenever anyone catches a chill or a bad case of rejection; the doddering housekeeper who aggravates but is always there in a pinch; the people who take to their beds and become professional invalids whenever the fillet of life toughens into jerkey. This book is not free of these and other fare on the standard Brookner menu. At times they can be too predictable and something of a yawn. But Fanny Hinton of "Look at Me" will remain in the reader's memory long after the more washed-out characters of lesser writers have faded into amnesic oblivion. In just about any novelistic talent show going, she can justifiably stand up tall and take her bow: though quiet as a cloud, this character is made up of one hundred percent pure electricity.

      Book Description

Now in paperback, the prize-winning coming-of-age novel about a young Indian girl in northern England. Winner of the Betty Trask Award and finalist for the Guardian Fiction Award, Anita and Me, which has been compared to To Kill a Mockingbird, tells the story of Meena, the daughter of the only Punjabi family in the British village of Tollington. With great warmth and humor, Meera Syal brings to life a quirky, spirited 1960s mining town and creates in her protagonist what the Washington Post calls a "female Huck Finn." The novel follows nine-year-old Meena through a year spiced with pilfered sweets and money, bad words, and compulsive, yet inventive, lies. Anita and Me offers a fresh, sassy look at a childhood caught between two cultures.

For me it was a little slow in the beginning but once I got into it I couldnt put it down! Its a wonderful novel, and although to me its not as good as Life isnt al Hahaheehee I still highly recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars You'll like this one. .......2005-04-30

This is one of my favorite books written by an author of Indian origin. Being Indian I could identify with so many aspects of the tale. Her wit, intelligence and sensitivity is prominent in this book, from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Anita and Me!.......2004-12-27

Oh how I enjoyed this one my dad asked me to read it and I absolutley adored this book about the Kumar's living in the 1900's or so and racism she endured. It was hilarious at SSR I would be laughing my heart out, and everyone would look at me funny. It was sad, but enjoyable. Meena is not accepted into the English world, but doesn't seem to fit in with her Indian family. You can relate if you are a kid who lies a lot trying to make your life exciting. Meena is a very enjoyable character she's smart, funny, imaginitive, creative (same thing i guess), charming, and witty. This is a book as a kid I reccomend for everyone!

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-12-23

Meera has captured the character of Meena in a way that gives a wonderful account of an Indian girl growing up in England. Many works have been written on the same theme, this one however stands apart. You can feel that the author herself has had or has been a witness to many similar experiences, which she describes in the book. Overall this was a fun read. I will also recommend the reader to see a movie called "Bhaji on the beach" for which Syal is the scriptwriter.
I really thought hard and could not think of anything other than five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Different, Yet the Same.......2002-05-30

I recommend that everyone should read "Anita and Me" by Meera Syal. This story, that of a young Indian girl growing up in a British town, is really a universal tale. Feeling the temptation to rebel against your parents, needing to be one of the "cool" kids, and struggling between what is right and wrong are all important things every child must go through. Meena, the main character of "Anita and Me", is no exception. Although she is Indian, she has many childhood experiences anyone could relate to. That is what makes this story so great. It points out that underneath our skin color, everyone is human. Unfortunately for Meena, not everyone in her town always feels that way. Meena's family is accepted by their British neighbors, but only when they act "British". Whenever they showed even the smallest aspects of their Indian culture, they were ignored, or even shunned. "Anita and Me" reminds us not to fall into a trap of prejudice as so many in Meena's town did. Meera Syal, the author of the story, challenges every reader to reassess what we consider "civilized" and to look beyond the color of someone's skin to find their worth, but to look at their character.

Romping from booth to booth among the rainbow-colored tents under the sun, Juanito and his friends fulfill Grandma’s vision of the flea market as a sharing community of friendly give and take. With every trade and barter, Juanito learns firsthand what it means to be a true rematero — a flea marketeer — and discovers that the value of community can never be measured in dollars.

5 out of 5 stars A superbly presented and recommended bilingual picturebook........2002-03-30

Young Juanito works with his Grandma Esperanza in selling clothing and used books at the local community flea market. As Juanito goes about running errands and bartering goods, he finds himself in the heart of a thriving Mexican American community, one that Juanito knows to be caring and generous, whose value can never be measured only in dollars. A superbly presented bilingual (English/Spanish) picturebook written by the Mexican-American poet Juan Felipe Herrera and illustrated by folk artist Anita De Lucio-Brock, Grandma And Me At The Flea is highly recommended for young readers ages 6 to 10.

5 out of 5 stars A look into the future........2005-07-22

Sheffield's writing style and use of current scientific facts to create a plausible future is present in all his science fiction books. BTSON is a fresh take on immortality, like his similar book, Tomorrow and Tomorrow. If you are interested in neurology, sociology, or just science fiction, this is a great book.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting ideas, but poor execution.......2001-02-03

This is a fairly easy book to read, and the author has a fair following. The ideas that he puts together and his ability to tie together such diverse concepts as he does in this work is beyond question.

People read science fiction for either the ideas or the story or both. For those who read it for the ideas, this will be a book that delivers. For those that are looking for a bit more...

The dialogue tends to be long sermons on particular subjects not delivered through story, and the story itself tends to be fairly predictable save for the spots where new concepts are introduced. For the reader looking for more in terms of reading, this will leave you a bit dry after.

Although the critical acclaim is not that easily ignored, and should not be, do not expect the same kind of fabulous experience that comes of the classics.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, full of wonderful ideas and an entertaining plot.......2000-11-11

One of my favorite science fiction books, the sort of book I think back on every once and a while that has stuck with me (I read it around 10 years ago).

Really a fantastic set of ideas!

5 out of 5 stars It is simply one of the best 100 sci-fi books ever writen........2000-05-26

I dont why i've always thougt that BTSON is writen in the same style of Larry niven. Exellent science, cool charecters ( the kind that can take care of themselves in any situation ), and really amzing ideas about big things like immortality, and about small things like the fact that in s-state everything looks a bit different because of pseudo-red shift. Anyway, allthough im a big Niven fan, this time Sheffield took Niven in his own style. get this book. Its really a masterpiece. Its a shame that sheffield is not acknowledged as the giant he is.

5 out of 5 stars from here to eternity - book your seat.......2000-02-12

It's not often that a book can start here and now and finish at the end of the universe, and keep the same characters.

If you want to know how to travel faster than light (and forget all that Star Trek warping nonsense) this is the book. The way to the stars is really shown, this really could happen. Charles Sheffield demonstrates the only way the human race could ever venture beyond the solar system, and with a wealth of belivable and sympathetic characters and plot. For and sci-fi fan this is an absolute must read.
