Book Description

The toast of 1893 New York society, the portraitist Piero Piambo has his pick of choice assignments. Acclaimed by his peers and his "betters," he is a fixture in the city's most opulent salons, yet he fears he has sold his soul to arrive there. But then comes a commission unlike any other -- one that will test Piambo's talents, his will...and his sanity.

The client is a Mrs. Charbuque, and the offer she makes to the artist is as bizarre and intriguing as it is financially rewarding. Piambo must paint the lady's portrait, and for the service he may name any price. However, though he may question her at length on any topic, he must never look upon his subject. And if the painting ends up a true likeness, his payment will be doubled.

With sketchbook in hand and his "model" hidden behind an elegant screen, the artist begins his haunting descent into her life and mind. Carried by her words through a strange childhood in a world of ice -- where she aided an obsessed, perhaps murderous, father in his study of the divine language of snowflakes -- and across a history marked by fame and despair, desire and rage, phantasm and myth, Piambo is alternately seduced and repulsed by the story she has to tell. Yet each session leaves him more determined than ever to unwrap the enigma that is Mrs. Charbuque.

But while he struggles to capture in oils the face of a woman he has never seen, a series of horrific and inexplicable deaths rocks the outside city. On street corners, in the alleys off the bustling shopping areas, and between the crumbling tenements, anonymous women are dying, their lifeblood flowing freely like tears from their eyes. And the deeper Piambo is drawn into Mrs. Charbuque's world, the more he begins to suspect that these terrible events, his impossible task, and his odd "benefactress" are somehow intimately connected.

An astonishing amalgam of the works of Henry James and Raymond Chandler, Jeffrey Ford's The Portrait of Mrs. Charbuque is a rare and rewarding reading experience -- equally satisfying as a hypnotically compelling literary work, a richly atmospheric historical novel, and a page-turning thriller. It will leave an indelible mark.

5 out of 5 stars A mysterious comission.......2007-10-08

In New York of 1893, painter Piambo is suffocating. He's forced to paint society portraits of the nouveaux riches in order to make a living. A mystery comission to paint the portrait of Mrs. Charbuque offers a way out, as she offers a rather mind-boggling amount of money for her portrait. There's a catch, of course: Piambo is not allowed to see Mrs. Charbuque. He can only hear her talk behind a screen.

Piambo accepts the commission. While he struggles with the painting, a wave of mysterious murders hits New York. Soon Piambo finds out he's in a bit too deep for his own good, but getting out is not that easy - and does Piambo really want to get out?

Jeffrey Ford has written a marvellous book. The story was a real page-turner, this is a magical book full of new wonders. Both Piambo and Mrs. Charbuque are interesting characters and the story is riddled with interesting people and events. It's been a while since I've read a book this captivating. Highly recommended for the fans of magical and fantastic.

3 out of 5 stars Decent mystery.......2006-07-14

The lush writing is a bit overdone at times, and the author admits his historicity isn't supposed to be accurate; but the mystery is fun, though the plot gets out of hand now and then (how many times can the narrator be smashed in the head without landing in a hospital with a serious concussion?), and the ending is a let-down, really just being a rehash of several '60s Hammer psycho movies. If the book hadn't been over-hyped as a "masterpiece" I would have enjoyed it more. But that's today's book market for you: just about everything that manages to get published is touted as being the Future of Literature, a Marvel, Inspired by God. Uh-huh. Note to publishers: There's nothing wrong with just publishing a pretty good book.

4 out of 5 stars It kept me guessing.......2006-03-23

The Portrait of Mrs. Charbuque is an original, fast-moving mix of mystery, historical fiction, and psychological thriller. While reading it, I was reminded of The Alienist, another novel set in period New York City that deals with a serial killer. Like Carr, Ford provides just enough detail to keep the story grounded in turn-of-the-20th-century NYC without overwhelming the reader with outdated words or ideas. He also touches on a host of themes ranging from the responsibility of an artist, to fidelity, to the fragility of the creative mind. I am most impressed by the web of coincidences and events that are joined by theme or imagery. I'm sure there's a word for it--I'll call it "interconnectedness." Everything that happens is connected in some way to everything else. For example, the importance of sight for an artist:Watkin's disguised blindess:eyes bleeding. I also like the red herring that convinced me that the story was headed in a supernatural direction. Nice sleight-of-hand by Ford. I think that it is interesting and probably deliberate that Piambo is the one character who is never described. It meshes with his thought that throughout all his portraits the one identity he could not uncover was his own. The novel's weakness is its ending, which does not rationalize or explain the events preceding it. Overall, The Portrait of Mrs. Charbuque is an expertly written, engaging milkshake of genres that kept me guessing.

5 out of 5 stars He has to Paint a Portrait of a Woman he Can't See.......2005-11-11

It's 1893 and Piero Piambo makes his living painting the portraits of the wealthy. He's talented and thinks he has what it takes to be a great artist, but he needs money, so he can't resist when he's offered a small fortune to paint the Portrait of Mrs. Charbuque. But he may not, under any circumstances, see her, and he cannot ask her any questions about her appearance. She speaks to him from behind a screen for an hour a day and he must figure out what she looks like by their conversation alone, however he's not allowed to ask her what she looks like.

She tells him unbelievable stories of her life from behind that screen as he sketches, spinning stories within stories as his work progresses. Then people start dying mysteriously in the city seemingly by illness, but he can't help thinking that Mrs. Charburque is somehow connected.

"The Portrait of Mrs. Charbuque" is a novel that will keep your imagination working overtime and one you won't soon forget. I know, because it's been a couple months since I've read it and I'm still thinking about it. This book made me laugh and it scared me a little too, plus there was that little revenge bit. I do so love a story about revenge.

5 out of 5 stars Jeffrey Ford is a master.......2005-02-01

Jeffrey Ford is one of the few true originals working in the field of fantastic literature.
With his multilayered, clean, smooth, metaphorical prose peppered with irony and black humour his novels and short stories are a joy to read.Although less fantastical and inventive than his
Cley trilogy ( The Physiognomy, Memoranda and The Beyond ) Charbuque is probably Ford's masterpiece and like his previous works very difficult to classify.Despite some comparisons with
The Alienist by Caleb Carr, Charbuque is more of a kind of "existencial metaphysical thriller" than an historical mystery novel and should appeal readers that appreciate the works of writes like Kafka, Henry James, Gene Wolfe and Jonathan Carroll.
Don't missed it.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Summer Mystery.......2007-05-26

This book actually turned out better than I expected. From the cover alone I expected it to be a little cheesy, but it turned out to be pretty entertaining. It all begins with three friends, Zoe, Sage, and Nike, who decide to take up shares of a beach house on Fire Island with Sage's wealthy boss. At the very beginning of the summer, his wife, Maggie, turns up dead, floating in the tide. Most everyone, including the police, figure it was an accidental drowning. Although Maggie had an unusual amount of alcohol and vicodin in her system and seemed to be swimming alone and nude.

To Zoe, this situation seemed all too strange, and she put her documentary film making to use and began to investigate everyone in Maggie's life. After spending an entire summer upsetting everyone and blaming all the wrong people, she does eventually figure it all out.

It ends up being a little obvious, but it's still a fun summer book.

5 out of 5 stars Killer Read.......2007-01-22

I just finished reading this book and could not put it down, literally, in the last fifty pages. The story is a good one - one that isn't expected. The characters are wonderful and easy to relate to - especially Zoe. Each chapter is written from a different character's point of view, which makes it even more entertaining to read. It keeps it fresh and interesting. There are funny parts of the book and it's not a romance novel by any means. It has a good plot, great characters, and keeps your interest. This is the first of Lynda Curnyn's novels that I've read and I will definitely be looking for another.

3 out of 5 stars killer summer.......2006-10-02

killer summer starts out slow. i have about twenty pages left and it is just now starting to pick up the pace.

4 out of 5 stars I thought this was a fun book about a possible murder and the beach!.......2006-01-16

I live on Long Island and we have great beaches here.

Fire Island is a very "happening" place that has lots of action.

I loved that this story took place on Fire Island and not the main land. I loved the point of view from the different friends and family of the deceased, including the deceased herself- and how she got into this perdicament.

This would be a great book for any vacation, or beach read over the summer- I think you would feel like you were actually in the book.

Fun- Fun- Fun book.

4 out of 5 stars Good mystery.......2006-01-02

In this novel, Lynda Curnyn takes us to Fire Island, where three friends named Zoe, Sage, and Nick are sharing a beach house with clothing magnate Tom. Early in the story, Zoe finds the mistress of the house dead in the water. The police department doesn't expend too much energy on her death, so kind-hearted Zoe, haunted by the incident, decides to explore it further.

I agree with the other customer reviewers who said that Sage and Nick were selfish and unlikable. Zoe is the only character who cares about anyone other than herself. Nick is particularly oafish and annoying, although he redeems himself a little by the end, and I'm not sure why his point of view was included.

The shifts in point of view - among Zoe, Nick, Sage, and the dead woman, Maggie - are confusing, although including a dead woman's voice is a neat trick. I would have eliminated a good 50-75 pages (including all the parts narrated by Nick) for a trimmer, leaner mystery, but the writing itself was light and enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Allston Works His Magic Again.......2006-02-20

As a follow-up to his book, Terminator Dreams, Aaron Alston once again works his magic to resurrect the Terminator story from the disaster that was T3. Allston's clear strong point that makes him the "best" Terminator writer (yes, even better than Stirling) is his apparent depth of knowledge of technology and how computer systems and high-end technology works. In "Hunt," he describes Skynet's and the T-X's technology in vivid detail that really captures the reader and makes you believe that the science-fiction is "real science." His characters which are carried over from Terminator Dreams are very real and he is able to build attachments. "Glitch," the captured and re-programmed T-850 becomes a very "human" character that the reader really attaches to. This is a great stand alone story more properly viewed as an "episode" rather than a link to the overall Terminator storyline. Well worth the time!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding continuation of Terminator story........2005-12-28

Honestly I didn't know what to expect when I picked up this book the other day. I was pleasantly surprised to find a well written, easy visualized story. The characters were fleshed out pretty well, and the plot line has some pretty intense moments. I hadn't read the book that preceded this one, but I am definitely going to pick it up. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wanted more after the T3 movie credits rolled.

2 out of 5 stars The book needs more action........2005-03-12

The terminator series are good but this was way down the river. It did have a better storyline than the previous terminator 3 novel. where was the action. It was to quick and not very descriptive. I do not recommend this book to any terminator fans
                    in the least.

                        Book Description

Jean-Jacques Rousseau's ideas about society, culture, and government are pivotal in the history of political thought. His works are as controversial as they are relevant today. This volume brings together three of Rousseau's most important political writings-The Social Contract and The First Discourse (Discourse on the Sciences and Arts) and The Second Discourse (Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality)-and presents essays by major scholars that shed light on the dimensions and implications of these texts. Susan Dunn's introductory essay underlines the unity of Rousseau's political thought and explains why his ideas influenced Jacobin revolutionaries in France but repelled American revolutionaries across the ocean. Gita May's essay discusses Rousseau as cultural critic. Robert N. Bellah explores Rousseau's attempt to resolve the tension between the individual's desire for freedom and the obligations that society imposes. David Bromwich analyzes Rousseau as a psychologist of the human self. And Conor Cruise O'Brien takes on the "noxious," "deranged" Rousseau, excoriated by Edmund Burke but admired by Robespierre and Thomas Jefferson. Written from different, even opposing perspectives, these lucid essays convey a sense of the vital and contentious debate surrounding Rousseau and his legacy. For this edition Susan Dunn has provided a new translation of the Discourse on the Sciences and Arts and has revised a previously published translation of The Social Contract.

5 out of 5 stars Insight into the Enlightenment.......2000-06-09

"I conceive of two sorts of inequality in the human species: one, which I call natural or physical, because it is established by nature and consists in the difference of ages, health, bodily strengths, and qualities of mind or soul; the other which may be called moral or political inequality, because it depends upon a sort of convention and is established, or at least authorized, by consent of men. The latter consists in the different privileges that some men enjoy to the prejudice of others, such as to be richer, more honored, more powerful than they, or even to make themselves obeyed by them."

In 1750, the Academy of Dijon held an essay contest. The question, `Has the restoration of the sciences & arts tended to purify morals?' The First Discourse (Discourse on the Sciences and Arts) was the winning essay. Rousseau's powerful critique of the enlightenment in modern Europe spit in the faces of the very people that were judging his work. However, Rousseau's arguments and assessment of the enlightenment were so profound that even the elite scholars of the Academy could not deny Rousseau his just recognition for superior writing and understanding of the nature of the sciences and arts and their effects on modern life.

Rousseau's Second Discourse (Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequity) was a follow up to the first. In it, Rousseau delves deeper into the issue of human origins (i.e. the state of nature) and the cause and effects of human inequality.

No other philosopher has be praised and condemned, celebrated and written-off as much as Rousseau. His countless effects on modern life go relatively unknown. Anyone who has read Marx, must ask themselves, what history book was Marx reading. Upon reading Rousseau's Discourses, it become obvious, Marx read Rousseau. However, "Rousseau can still overpower where Marx falls flat." (Allan Bloom, `The Closing of The American Mind,' 217.)

Rousseau is a must read for anyone who is a student of, or interested in, philosophy, political philosophy, Marxism, or simply has a longing to return to the state of nature and thinks that life would be best if we would all just "go and work in our garden." (Voltaire, `Candide,' 144.)
