a masterpiece.......2006-04-30
Evan Dara's the Lost Scrapbook is a story of isolated individuals existing in the same community, mapping the inability to connect in modern culture even when it is absolutely necessary. A shocking condemnation of American money/hero-driven culture, it also reads as a condemnation of the hero-driven novel. One of the best books to take the soul of Ulyesses/Mrs Dalloway and update it to create a portrait of a modern community. This is an essential masterwork.
Possible.......2001-11-10
Haven't had a chance to read it yet, so there's that.
I bought it because of the connection to Vollmann, who is a writer of outstanding prowess.
This is a reliable press. The cover is a bit lamentable, don't you agree?
5 stars because I bought it and I'll spank myself if it turns out to be a dud.
Incredible.......2000-12-20
Right now I'm only halfway through this novel, but that's only because I want to read it in snippets and prolong the reading, because so far as I can tell this is the author's only novel so far. I can only hope that the author doesn't pull a Gaddis and make us wait 20 years for his next novel, but even if he did, something tells me it would be worth the wait. A beautiful book.
There are no words. . ........2000-10-06
. . . to describe the incredible force and beauty of this book. It is almost impossible to believe that this is Dara's first novel, for the facility with which he interweaves superficially disparate but fundamentally similar vignettes into a cohesive whole is breathtaking. As you read, you can feel that you are in the hands of a master. The Lost Scrapbook (an apt title both because of the books collage style and because this amazing book has inexplicably been lost amid heaps of lesser works) combines the first-person narratives of artists, blue-collar workers, academics, mothers, possible lunatics, justified malcontents, and average joes, eventually becoming the voice of a community facing a terrible crisis, which brings the books to its gripping, gut-wrenching conclusion. And with this final narrative, of the battle of Isaura, MO and the Ozark Photography Corporation, Dara reveals that he is not only brilliantly talented, he is also brilliantly moral.
The Lost Scrapbook is a deeply-felt, deeply moving novel.
Best Novel of the Decade.......1999-06-15
Don't worry yourself that this masterpiece'll be overlooked-- even in today's mess of praise for books that are as billboards for soulessness the good stuff eventually surfaces word-of-mouthwise. So let me be the 2nd to here sound the call to all literature thirsties ready for something more hurricane than novel: Build yourselves from this perfect thumping upon the ceiling of our world; read it in the prisons and on the beaches; read it wherever there is love and/or chemical dumping; read it bravely, whatever the cost may be.

For Children Only!.......2001-09-07
This book should only be read by children. The mistake I made was making the assumption this would be a "Making of..." book with lots of photos, art and other behind-the-scenes materials from the film. The title, "Scrapbook", suggests this, but, alas, it's nothing more than a children's book with some blown-up photos from the film. If you're a kid and you loved "Lost World," then this book is a way to rekindle those memories. If you're a film afficiando looking for some interesting tidbits on how the film was created, don't look for that book here...
TLW Scrapbook.......2000-09-04
I thought it was interesting for one reason, and that was that it has pictures of the film that have been cut.

A passionate, rich, and wonderfully moving romance from RITA Award–winning author Laura Lee Guhrke.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely lovely regency romance. .......2007-08-08
Dylan Moore is a tall, lean, devilishly dark composer with untamed hair and a loose grip on sanity. He's driven to despair by increasing noises in his head - presumably tinnitus - and his frightful inability to compose since the noises began with an accident. His life is a joke, a shambles. One mad night he ends up in Charing Cross Palladium, the concert hall where he conducted his first symphony. He's standing there, gun to his head, ready to blow his tormented brains out, when Grace Cheval stops him the only way she knows how: she plays her violin. In that stunning instant, for the first time in years, Dylan hears music in his head. Not the music Grace is playing, but his own music, music he hasn't written yet! And he realizes he'll live.
It takes five tumultuous years for him to find her again, and this time he's again desperate. An unknown daughter, a wilful, dark-haired child who composes music beautiful enough to make the saints weep, has been deposited at his house. Dylan didn't even know he was a father. The only thing for him to do is find Grace, and ask her to be Isabel's governess. Secretly he's also thinking if he can just get her into his house, and into his bed, the elusive music in his head might finally drown out the maddening noises still tormenting him. There's a catch. Grace was someone else's muse, and it nearly destroyed her and her family. She's not going to be selfishly used again, not even by the magnetic, urgent Dylan. Oh, this story will live in your heart long after you close the pages. A beautiful, luscious, stunning romance with unexpected humour and a deep, wild streak to enjoy. Music for your soul.
A Great Romp.......2007-07-28
For romance novel fans, this book has it all. Engaging lead characters, interesting secondary characters, humor and enough of an entertaining plot to keep you reading. This was one of the more entertaining romance novels I've read in a while. And one of the few times I didn't find myself wanting to smack the heroine upside the head for being so silly!
Unexpectedly Beautiful.......2007-03-23
I had never heard of Laura Lee Gurhke before I read His Every Kiss. Nothing I've read by her since has impressed me very much. However, His Every Kiss is a keeper. I read it years ago, and then a few years later, but I keep it in my room at all times. I could walk into my bedroom and walk straight to it even if I were blindfolded.
Dylan is a wonderfully broody hero. Grace is a little too gracious. But their good-girl/bad-boy thing works. She has not always been a good girl, and he was once something more than a bad boy. Their initial meeting will rock you. Their subsequent meetings will leave you turning pages until the end of the book no matter how early you have to be to work the next day.
You will learn some things about musical notation you may never have known before and you will hope that someday the author will write about their daughter. Hers is definitely a story that will need to be told.
A Real Romance Worth Reading..........2005-12-17
I am really pleased that I took a chance and bought "His Every Kiss" by Laura Lee Guhrke. I had never heard of this author before but, I won't soon forget her.
It has been years since I read a good novel that truly got my emotions involved and made me feel a part of the plot line. I could almost touch these characters they became so real. If you enjoy a romance novel that is not so steep in history it boggles the mind or so intense into sex scenes that you think you are involved in a soft porn movie than this book could be for you. I can truly say this is one of the top books I have ever read. And...I have read honestly thousands of romances since I was 18 years old.
You will connect with the main characters Grace Cheval and Dylan Moore. This was a beautiful story not of dukes, duchess, princes or princesses...or even high society. Instead...it was about human emotions and how you deal with love won and lost, sexual attraction, uncomfortable emotions and how to be a decent human being.
The back drop of Dylan's musical brilliance as a pianist and composer, and Grace's "fall from grace" due to running away with her first love and the repercussions from such actions will keep you engrossed from the beginning. Dylan is drawn to Grace from the first time he met her not just due to her beauty and talent as a violinist but, something deeper that draws him to her as no other woman. She allows him to hear music again after he lost it for years. Thus...she becomes critical to his world. Grace in turn is deeply attracted to him as his passion and drive is white hot but, she got burned before in this haze of intensity and doesn't want to again but, Dylan's kisses and drugging passion are hard to resist.
Lots of twists occur such as the unexpected arrival of Dylan's unknown daughter "Isabel" and how they deal with her, Dylan's medical condition of ringing ears from an accident years before and his lost musical touch, Dylan's fascination and need for Grace to be his muse and Grace's past disgrace of living in sin with a famous painter and what he did with all those nude paintings he made of her over the years. Truly, the twists and developments never end and you don't want them to.
The love scenes are happily second in this book to the great characters and story line. In romances, often the love scenes need to be hot to keep the action going but, not here.
The ending of the book is marvelously written and actually made me tear up a few times (I didn't cry...just felt the threat of tears - that's alot for me in a love story) - the writing made the emotions that real and raw you couldn't help but, be moved and pray for a happy ending.
I'm sad that their tale is now over....I say buy this, keep it, never lend it out and expect to read it again and again. Enjoy!
Some parts of this book just rip your HEART out!!!.......2005-07-25
Dylan is probably the most tortured hero I have read about in a long time. And because of this afliction (the ringing in his ears) he really is tortured. Can anyone imagine how horrible that would be and especially for a gifted composer. Grace early on saves Dylan's life by keeping him from killing himself. and that moment Dylan never forgets. When he meets her finally a couple of years later he has to have her in his life. She is so fearful of giving her heart again, especially to another artist. Her husband was a tortured painter and he became almost insane with his extremes before he died. So when Dylan asks Grace to become his newly found daughter's governess, only desperation on her part allows her to agree. The torture this man goes through, fighting his demons, not being able to compose is excrutianting to read. And truly many writers can write joy, pain and bliss and all the other emotions but when you read the part when Dylan truly lets his daughter down by exposing the worst parts of his nightly activities well it is one of the most compelling parts of any book I have read recently. You just are racked with the pain Dylan feels at what a horrible person and father he is. I absolutely could not put this book down. It is such an emotional read and Dylan and Grace are just beautiful together. I did feel the ending was a little hurried. I think this is one book that badly needed an epilogue. Perhaps if there is a book about Ian maybe we will learn how Grace and Dylan are living on. there is no known cure I do not think even now for the ringing in ears- but I would hope in the contentment of Dylan's love for Grace he will find some peace. Wonderful book!!!

Customer Reviews:
A DEADLY, GORGEOUS ASSASSIN.......2005-10-10
Normally, Aphrodite IX is the kind of book that I would rip to shreds. The main character is a gorgeous, scantily clad female. Not that I have anything against gorgeous, scantily clad females, but when a book features dozens of splash pages, many of them two-page splash pages, it's usually a sign that the book is all glitz and eye-candy and lacking any story. But a funny thing happened as I read this trade paperback collecting issues #1 - 4 of the series...I liked it. I really liked it! (with apologies to Sally Field).
In a futuristic society where nearly all humans have some synthetic parts of some kind, Aphrodite is unique. She is totally synthetic and was created in a lab. Only she doesn't know it. Created to be an ultra powerful assassin and to carry out the whims of the head of the Council, Aphrodite kills without remorse or feeling and does so brazenly and with incredible efficiency. And, 15 minutes after her missions, she completely forgets them, retaining no memory of what she did or even what she is. Her first hints come when she leaves herself a recording, prior to forgetting. Then, she slowly begins to remember things in her dreams. She remembers the people she's killed and she remembers the Council and the man she affectionately called "daddy" the scientist who created her.
The more she remembers the more of a conscience she develops over her actions. Aphrodite, the unstoppable assassin, fighting off security forces and a powerful cyborg named Abraxis, begins to piece together the clues of her mysterious life and finally comes face-to-face with the head of the council and learns all the secrets of her deadly past.
Writer David Wohl borrows some themes from films and TV such as "The Matrix", "The 6th day" and "Dark Angel" and comes up with an effective, if not altogether, original story. I did find myself engrossed in Aphrodite's search for her background and the reason why she forgets her missions 15 minutes after completion. Dave Finch's artwork is simply striking. Yes there are a lot of splash pages but it is great stuff. He shows Aphrodite as the perfect, sexy, yet vulnerable and confused and manipulated killer that she is. The trade paperback also reprints all of the variant covers that were included in the regular comic series and a brief sketch gallery.

By analyzing the present-day church and examining societal trends, Carl George presents a model that can mobilize your church for outreach.
Customer Reviews:
Important Model for Church Growth and Vitality.......2001-01-25
Carl George wrote this book some time ago, but even today, it is a highly relevant and important book for many of today's churches. The concept of small groups is not exactly a new concept. Many churches have encouraged this for years. But few churches even now have turned the concept of small groups into a far reaching and fundamental tool of ministry, outreach, and caring that permeates the entire church mission. Even today, small groups tend to be a "back burner" concept among many churches.
This book tries to draw a direct relationship between small group ministry and church size. The theory is that a church can grow only so big and reach only so many people absent a vital and large emphasis on small groups. George cites a few megachurches as examples of the kind of ongoing growth and changed lives that occur when the church embraces small groups not with a recreational commitment, but with the kind of commitment that comes when something is considered a primary mission of the church.
The small group model for church growth is a model that works, not because George says so, but because several churches who have embraced this model are growing beyond many of the ceilings that the vast majority of churches who don't embrace this model can't seem to break through. Getting their people into small groups, when emphasized and encouraged, allows bigger churches to continue ministering to people and meeting their needs by allowing the congregation to minister to itself and not overtax the staff. This accomplishes the goal of the church not having to build up a huge staff of paid people to try and meet the needs of a big congregation. Therefore, allowing church funds to be spent not on an increased staff, but on more relevant activities that are more in line with the mission that God has imparted on the particular church. Further, small group multiplication allows the church to continue to grow and reach new people in the community in ways that are non threatening.
I did not give the book 5 stars only because the book does not appear to spend a lot of time discussing how a church can really establish a vital small group ministry and structure their staff in an effective way to cultivate it. Too often, growing churches want to do good things, but do not put the kind of infrastructure in place, whether people or facilities, to administer the programs with excellence. It's the classic problem of biting off more than we can chew. The motivations of the church are in the right place in these instances, but without a clear plan in place for administering a major small group ministry, George provides an incomplete strategy for implementing this approach. This may sound like a minor point, but it isn't. Ministries that are not undertaken with excellence are ministries that fail to fully fulfill the purpose for which the ministry was created. Having an administrative infrastructure in place that effectively manages a big small group ministry while also being an infrastructure that is frugal relative to church budgets is clearly one aspect of establishing a ministry with excellence. And this aspect is not easily addressable and thus, represents a significant challenge to George's model. It is solvable I believe, but George should have addressed this in more detail, in my view.
But clearly, George has hit on something that every church can benefit from if implemented correctly. At its core, Christianity needs to be about people. And in order to meet people's needs and transform people into fully devoted disciples of Christ, the church must place just as much a priority on meeting people's needs and providing care and support as it does on spreading the Gospel message. In fact, I would argue that those two things go hand in hand, and both are strengthened by the other. Having an active small group ministry that looks for small group solutions for a whole array of congregational concerns and interests is a proven model for church growth and evangelism, and something George describes very well. A good book, a good pastoral resource.
Best reason for small groups.......2000-03-13
While some of the diagrams leave you wanting and wondering, the heart of the book solidifies the need for small groups. Especially in a era when there is so much demand on our time and so much stress in our lives. When George related the story of Jethro and his council to Moses, I knew our church HAD to get behind small groups in a big way. George shows how small groups are the key to a church family and how they are the true ministry of the church.
Shows the way for vital churches in the 21st Century.......1999-09-13
Carl George's "Prepare Your Church for the Future" is a must-read for those who desire to approach ministry in fresh ways in the coming years. His emphasis on the keys for developing groups for meaningful relationships and growth are second to none!
Must-read book for churches that want to grow........1998-11-18
Many churches have adopted small group ministry as a way to connect Christians and to provide support and growth for their members. George shows how small groups can become an engine for evangelism and leadership development and enable churches to break through barriers to growth. Essential reading for any church wanting to grow -- in both numbers and depth. I also recommend the follow-up book by George, "The Coming Church Revolution," which goes into greater depth and detail and provides examples of many churches from several denominations that have successfully used this model.
