A meditation on art, aging, and memory, John Updike's Seek My Face is the fictional equivalent of a PBS documentary on postwar American art. Seventy-nine-year-old Hope Chafetz, a painter of merit but, most importantly, wife to two major American artists, allows a young journalist named Kathryn to interview her for an online magazine. Having expected perhaps a two-hour talk over coffee, Hope is dismayed to find that her guest has brought sheaves of questions, a tape recorder, and the kind of scrupulous attention to detail--even sexual detail--that Hope would rather avoid. She gives an entire day to Kathryn, who, like memory itself, seems oblivious to Hope's need to eat, rest, or breathe fresh air.

Seek My Face draws on the story of Lee Miller and Jackson Pollock, the model for Hope's first husband. These are the best parts of a slow, sumptuous, and intricately detailed novel that lacks any significant action except in retrospect. Hope's second husband is depicted as an amalgam of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, and Wayne Thiebaud--a useful survey of the period, but not compelling characterization. One can sense the author folding in important art-historical points and details toward the end, like last-minute ingredients in a cake that may be too heavy to rise. Readers who stay with Hope and Kathryn through the day, however, will be rewarded with a gorgeous, resonant, and almost antimodern ending. --Regina Marler

    Book Description

John Updike’s twentieth novel, like his first, The Poorhouse Fair (1959), takes place in one day, a day that contains much conversation and some rain. The seventy-eight-year-old painter Hope Chafetz, who in the course of her eventful life has been Hope Ouderkirk, Hope McCoy, and Hope Holloway, answers questions put to her by a New York interviewer named Kathryn, and recapitulates, through the story of her own career, the triumphant, poignant saga of postwar American art. In the evolving relation between the two women, the interviewer and interviewee move in and out of the roles of daughter and mother, therapist and patient, predator and prey, supplicant and idol. The scene is central Vermont; the time is the early spring of 2001.

5 out of 5 stars So alive, even on a dull and rainy afternoon.......2007-09-24

SEEK MY FACE, an extraordinary novel that takes place on one long rainy afternoon in New England, ranks (for me, at least) with the greatest novels taking place on a single day: Nadine Gordimer's THE LATE BOURGEOIS WORLD, Saul Bellow's SEIZE THE DAY, and Philip Roth's brilliant evocation of a snowy afternoon, evening, night and its following bright winter morning--including breakfast--in THE GHOST WRITER.

After breakfast in THE GHOST WRITER, Hope Lonoff, the revered writer's wife, runs away from the revered writer (in Roth's memorable words) "on her doomed search for a less noble calling..."

Another Hope is the calm and graciously introspective woman painter at the center of the Updike novel.

Prodigious, subtle, intelligent, tender, alive, and emotionally precise, SEEK MY FACE is, like THE GHOST WRITER, a marvel. I learned so much about painting, painters, women artists, and growing old while I was reading it and I feel so grateful to Updike for writing it.

    1 out of 5 stars WTF?.......2007-05-13

This is the first book in my 50+ years of life that I have not been able to finish. It just rambles on. Maybe if I knew more about Jakson Pollack it would have been more interesting, but I doubt it.

5 out of 5 stars The Master Describer at Work Again!.......2006-01-06

Updike is master writer of vast intelligence and fantastic insight into human relationships.

Here are some of my favorite quotes I pulled out of "Seek My Face,"

"She and Zack came to the sunstruck, wind-raked flats and filled the forsaken old farmhouse with the sound of their voices, augmenting the warmth of their bodies with that the woodstove, whose heat parched their skins and hair in its close vicinity but died halfway upstairs to the cold bedroom."

"As the sun warms the mountains these wasps of vapor are stirred into visibility above the valleys. Violet tinged panes had seemed thinned, like the skin of an old person; at a blast of wind from a certain angle a window vibrates like a harp being stroked."

"His airs, his vanity got worse after the `Life' article, and the world showed signs of coming around to his naïve overestimation of himself. Collapses would occur sometimes at one of the dinner parties she so carefully constructed, sometimes on a trip to New York, where the sense of spotlight on him, of bright lights and fortunes to be made as post-war prosperity seeped into the art market."

"Kathryn lifts her chin, her opaque protuberant eyes flash like those of the predator on the scent. She wants Hope's analytic mood to keep expanding, but already the effort has embarrassed the older woman with its immodesty."

"Outside the thin-paned windows, birds cannot be seen, a hush has thickened the air. The small shreds of cloud have grown flat lead-blue bottoms and white tops shaped like cauliflowers."

"She sees, walking past windows, that the sky, this morning so blank and pure a blue, is closing down, the scattered white clouds expanding to crowd out the spaces between them, packing themselves tightly as gray flag stones, with something vaporous arising even in the chinks, so that the sunlight leaking through is tremulous, like the shuddering reflections from the windows of a passing train."

5 out of 5 stars New York School.......2005-12-12

Things trail us from place to place. Hope wanted to have an old chair of her grandmother's. She was raised as a Quaker in Ardmore. Now she is seventy nine and is wearing soft Birkenstocks. The sixties had been a great release.

Zack's pictures became famous and his drinking terrible. Zack had been a westerner. Zack McCoy had not liked to be interviewed. He had been coached on what to say. He had been self-indulgent and, even, self-educated. Clem used Zack to make a name in art criticism. He really had very little talent. Benton had been his teacher. The rich had made pets out of the European artists, Mondrian, Max Ernst, Duchamp.

At Bryn Mawr Hope's childhood interest in art had been revived. In 1942 Hope moved to New York City to be an artist. She attended Cooper Union. In the 1940's Hope and her artist friends despised the mural style. (Some of it has aged well.) Hope feels at times she has wasted her life. Her husband, Zack McCoy, didn't go through any of that. At their place on Long Island he simply went out to the barn and painted. The Cedar Tavern at University Place was a meeting place for the artists. Peggy Guggenheim had promoted Zack's work. Hope had been attracted to Zack, not to his art.

Hope has a fear of being thought stupid about all the new technology and is shy in the presence of a young interviewer about the working of the devices in her kitchen. Hope's current place is a farmhouse in northern New England, a sort of train arrangement with its attached barn. Zack and Hope were married in 1945 by a Congregational minister. Zack used industrial enamel paints for his work. In action, painting for Zack had a tempo. His way of working did produce failures. Hope remembers some incidents with shame. Alcoholics have a way of making the world assume the burden of their misbehavior.

Zack got his power of concentration from his mother. Hope foundered in Zack's shadow. Women didn't count for much in the world of macho painters. The couple hit each other when work was blocked and for other reasons. At the time of his death Zack was drinking a case of beer a day and Hope was in Europe.

The book's format is Hope being interviewed. Hope's later husbands also were connected to art. Guy Holloway was a pop artist and Jerry Chafetz had been a collector. Guy was half English. Their baby daughter was named Dot and Guy did his Benday series around the time of her birth.

The book draws upon the lives of actual artists to create a sense of verisimilitude. Updike's use of the material is masterful.

3 out of 5 stars Loved, loved, loved the ending!!!!!.......2005-08-18

In tone, in subject-matter and in meaning, the last ten pages of Seek My Face stand apart from the novel that came before them. It was almost as if the ever-reliable Mr. Updike took the main character from the novel, wrote her into a short story that concerned her childhood, and then placed the short piece into the longer prose offering, separate but unequal. The tender "memory" of the main character as a child in a long-gone America of the early twentieth-century, interacting with her endearing Quaker grandfather, was more touching than the tale of the character's having lived thru the highs and lows of the twentieth-century American art scene. I HAD to mention that. The story at the end, the woman's memory, meant more to me as a reader than everything else in the novel, a work I at times enjoyed a lot and at other times found myself bored with nearly past tolerance.

I'm a fan of John Updike. I've read most of his short stories and a half-dozen of his novels. But if I knew going into this book what I know now for having been from one side of it to the other, I'd read just the ending. But hey, if you're someone with an interest in the history and figures of American art from the 1940's to the 1970's, you'll probably get more out of Seek My Face, than I did.

    Book Description

The new Jewish spirituality lies somewhere between God's elusive presence in our world and our search for authentic language to describe it.

Rabbi Arthur Green leads us on a journey of discovery to seek God, the world, and ourselves. One of the most influential Jewish thinkers of our time, Green has created a roadmap of meaning for our lives in the light of Jewish mysticism, using the Hebrew letters that make up the divine name:

Yod--Reality at the beginning. God as the oneness of being at the outset, before it unfolds into our universe. Heh--Creation and God's presence in the world. A renewed faith in God as Creator has powerful implications for us today. Vav--Revelation, the central faith claim of Judaism and the claim it makes on our lives. Heh--Redemption and our return to God through the life of Torah and by participating in the ongoing repair of the world.

A personal and honest framework of understanding for the seeker, this revised and updated edition of a classic sheds new light on our search for the divine presence in our everyday lives.

5 out of 5 stars Concise and solid.......2004-05-10

Arthur Green is one of my favorite leaders in Kabalah. His books are based on traditional mysticism, not a New Age Quick Fix Self-Help type of Judaism. I found this book appealing because each chapter is very short, dealing with one, simple idea that is not dependent on previous chapters. It's a great book to read at bedtime; a brief essay, written clearly that opens your mind to many "ah-ha" moments. Great choice for all levels interested in Kabalah.

5 out of 5 stars A book which makes Judaism more meaningful to everyone........1999-12-20

Rabbi Green, in quite a skillful way, directs the reader to an aspect of Judaism not adequately addressed by other authors. He "introduces" a monistic overview which makes one feel one with all. It is easy reading and very useful to one's path. I have been fortunate to hear him in person and highly recommend his works and especially this book. Rabbi Green does his part in bringing spirituality back to Judaism.

Typically an anthology only holds a story or two that stands out, but this book differs: one, that there are actually 6 stories rather than only 4, and second, all 6 stories are entertaining.

Dorothea Donley's "Taste of London" is a fairy tale of two cousins spending the season with distant cousin Lord Aldford and his friend, who help Miss Amberly resolve the scandal of her family's past, with help from the Prince Regent.

Jean R. Ewing's "Notorious Lord" sends a Viscount in his friend Mr. Grenville's place to woo an "antidote" of a prospective bride, except that the bride has also switched places with her friend Miss Fraser to avoid the expected Mr. Grenville. But the clever Miss Fraser has already recognized Viscount Beaumarais!

In Paula Tanner Girard's "A Matter of Honor", a wild Irish princess is forced to marry a duke according to an ancient agreement between the Irish lords and the duke's ancestors. But the language barrier and a little trickery wed the duke to the girl before he can tell her about his betrothed and carts her to London!

In Jenna Jones' "Duke of Diamonds", a duke intends to humiliate a house of scheming, marriage-minded women...then too late discovers the one innocent in the pack of cats.

In Meg-Lynn Roberts' "For All Eternity", Christina Granford had seemed to love Viscount Fulbrooke those years ago during the season, but had broken his heart when telling him she was already betrothed. Now a widow, they've been forced to stop avoiding each other...

In Marcy Stewart's "Lady Constance Wins", Constance's three adorable older cousins meddle and convince an American to pose as competition to a man informally promised to Constance...but stalling in asking her for a formal pledge.

This is a great anthology to curl up with in a warm bed on a rainy day.

In its hour of need, the Well World's guardians had been neutralized. Nathan Brazil was shipwrecked on a desert island with a seemingly harmless girl who had caused his mind to be invaded, his will sapped, and his mission forgotten. Mavra Chang had been abducted by a vicious gang of inter-hex drug smugglers and held prisoner by a revenge-mad creature who had surgically and genetically altered her into a bizarre farm and made her a slave to powerful narcotics. But the Well of Souls, sophisticated beyond human understanding, was still a machine; it needed its guardians. And so it set plans in motion to jolt its champions back into the game.

But avert if Brazil or Chang could overcome the formidable obstacles in their path, they could not know that all the players, even the great Well computer, were being manipulated by the Kraang, an entity more ancient than the universe itself. For the Kraang had a game plan that would use the guardians to give it powers far beyond those avert of the Well of Souls -- making it a living god....

4 out of 5 stars This New Watchers at the Well Trilogy Doesn't Quite Live Up to the Original Series.......2007-02-03

Jack L. Chalker's return to the Well World universe was much anticipated, and in the end pretty good. This new trilogy, Watchers at the Well, starts with "Echoes of the Well of Souls", continues with "Shadow of the Well of Souls", and concludes with "Gods of the Well of Souls".

Long locked away in an ancient prison, a completely alien force found a chink in its prison cell the last time Nathan Brazil, the immortal keeper of the Well World where control of the universe lies, reset the universe. Now it wants out so it can have free reign of the universe and control of the Well World itself.

Alerted to the danger at hand, the Well World summons Nathan Brazil and Mavra Chang, his new co-Keeper of the Well, but will they answer the call? Brazil is weary, very weary; keeping watch over the universe for all eternity has taken its toll on him and his is just too tired to deal with it anymore. And Chang, who is now estranged from Brazil, never wanted the responsibility that forced upon her.

As the threat to the safety of the universe and the Well World grows and Brazil and Chang ignore the call, the alien entity grows stronger; and, the computer at the heart of the Well World must stop at nothing to get the undivided attention of its keepers before it is too late!

If you loved the original Well World series (and who wouldn't?!?), you will most likely want to read this series as well; if you haven't, then stop and read it immediately.

1 out of 5 stars Please avoid; but don't miss the first series.......2000-05-01

Jack Chalker's original Well of Souls series (Midnight, Echoes, Quest, Return, Twilight) are classics, possibly the finest science fiction series I have ever read.

The three books in this series, this one being the last, are horrid, and I don't just mean in relation to the originals.

Like many other writers, his energy was spent after the first few series and books, and he has degenerated into rehashing formaulaic bad prose over and over. Where he used to "show" what was happening, he now spends endless pages "tell"ing in justification of the poor choices his characters make in far fetched plot.

The outcome was thoroghly predictable. The plot was the most forced plot I can ever remember reading. The lectures at the end were insufferable.

Please avoid. And please read the originals - not to be missed!

                                    Book Description

One of the greatest Christian thinkers and writers on spiritual formation today, Dr. James Houston thoughtfully examines what is at the core of every human soul: a longing intimacy with God. In each book, Houston examines an aspect of what it means to truly experience the most profound of all relationships.

In The Creator the fouth in the five book series one of the world's foremost Christian thinkers reveals, through a clear and compelling examination of Scripture, that there can only be meaning in life if there is a Creator of life, and that the future of the earth depends on how we live and serve our Creator. We were created for the purpose of relating intimately to our Creator, and knowing how is crucial to our spiritual growth.

The Bible code-the ancient code encrypted in the Bible that may reveal our future-was made known to the world by investigative reporter Michael Drosnin. Now he reveals startling new predictions warning that we may have only three years to stop the countdown to Armageddon. This dramatic account opens on the morning of September 11, 2001, when Drosnin witnessed the attack on the World Trade Center-and then found the terrible event predicted in detail in the 3,000-year-old Bible code. But according to the code, September 11 was only the beginning. The Bible code says we are already in the "End of Days," the Apocalypse foretold by all three major religions of the West. Drosnin has traveled the globe to meet with world leaders to prevent the impending danger-and to search for the "Code Key," a long-buried ancient object that may completely unlock the Bible code, just in time to save our world.

I had a nightmare last night. I had seen four Arab men with what looked like an atom bomb about to detonate it in the New York subway system!I had seen the movie THE MONEY TRAIN: And I thought I recognized the yellow brick rooms like in the movie.
Drosnin in his last book BIBLE CODE II: THE COUNTDOWN, seems to predict that New York City is destined for such a nuclear terror attack!
                                                On this subject, Drosnin writes:
"I fear that one morning we will wake up to the news that a whole city has been destroyed-not two big buildings, but an entire city-that New York, Tel Aviv, or Jerusalem just does not exist anymore." (p. 235)
Drosnin has found other nuclear holocaust predictions in the Old Testament in coded form, in the that resemble crossword puzzles: Atomic holocaust with a missile (p. 226); Atomic Holocaust in 2006 (p. 235). I noticed as I studied the Book of Revelation, God sends down judgments on man in increments, getting increasingly severe right up to Armageddon. I like how Drosnins found that the terror attacks werd Birth Pangs like the language Jesus Christ used in the Olivet Dioscourse. Birth pains in the Olivet Discourse refer to disasters that God sends upon mankind as judgments or punishments. And just like the woman in labor, the pains and disasters both become more intense and frequent until the woman gives birth. But in Bible prophecy, the event is the End of the world or the Second Coming of Jesus Christ!
                                                But Drosnin also said:
"Apocalyptic religious fanatics, terrorists armed with weapons of mass destruction, men who believe they are on a mission from God, they are the ultimate danger encloded in the Bible." (p.22)
I had found another mysterious encypted message in the Old Testament which shows the "Mercy of God" intertwined with "Judgment of God" Like it says God may wound but he also forgives.
Also I saw this insight about Bin Laden on my own but later found it in this book: "Bin Laden" associated with "Judgment from God". Like God was using Bin Laden as a sword in his hand to punish or scourge the United States for its sins and cruelty. I get my deductions from the Holy Spirit and personal Bible study. I don't know the first thing about Hebrew!

Admits on page 5 that he doesn't believe in God. Hmmmm. What a waste of time. This is a very interesting subject, but he simply should've handed the project over to a believer. Instead of trying to break the code to the future, he should just read and study the Bible. There is quite a wealth of information in there.

So, why should he expect us to believe that someone who doesn't believe in God, or the Bible for that matter, would have anything valid to say about our future. Has he set himself up as God? Why was he trying to consult our Presidents and world leaders? Hello Mr. Vanity. Why was this book in the Christian section of the bookstore? I'm taking it back.

1 out of 5 stars approach with caution.......2006-10-20

Bible Code enthusiasts believe God put hidden messages in the Bible for us to find with a computer, however, when you read this man's book, a whole different picture emerges. He states over and over again that he does not believe in God. Then somewhere towards the end of the book, he tells you what he DOES believe. He believes that the Bible Codes are real, but the Bible and its codes were not written by God, but by an alien intelligence that came to us from another planet in a UFO. AND... He claims that there is a Bible Code Key, a steel obelisk buried beneath the salt encrusted land of the Dead Sea, and it is his goal to find it. This key is supposed to contain all knowledge of humanity and it was brought to earth by aliens in a UFO, the ones who supposedly created us. He states we are destined to find this obelisk when the end times are upon us. Incidentally, the Dead Sea, including the land around it, is geographically the lowest point on earth and is considered by some Christian theologians to be the main gateway to hell. AND... This man is bouncing back and forth between world leaders telling them of his dire predictions, BUT that the predictions are actually just "warnings", and we can work to change the outcomes by working together for peace. When his predictions don't come true, he goes back to the computer program and types in different trigger words until he gets the prediction to say what he wants it to say. Or, he claims that we can somehow manage to avoid making the dire prediction come true by taking defensive action soon enough. He predicted a smallpox epidemic to strike Israel in 2005. That didn't happen. Did anyone take action to prevent it? He predicted a nuclear attack on New York or Israel in 2006 (we have a little over 2 months left in 2006 to see if that one comes true). The test of a true prophecy of God is that it will always come true. I was given the very distinct impression that this man's approach to Bible Codes, using them to predict the future, is the handiwork of Satan, and may prove to be a primary tool of the False Prophet. The book Alien Encounters by Chuck Missler hypothesizes that the Antichrist's arrival will be accompanied by a skyful of UFOs, and the Antichrist will then claim that the raptured (missing) Christians were taken by the UFOs because they need to be "re-educated", and here Drosnin is stating a firm belief in aliens as our creators. God warns against listening to soothsayers, mediums, fortunetellers and the like. This really isn't much different. And why would God use an admitted atheist to minister His prophecies to the world? He wouldn't. Christians should ignore Drosnin's Bible Codes, or, at the very least, approach them with great skepticism. If you have an interest in Bible Codes, stick to the writings of Christians, such as Chuck Missler or the Christian Jewish Minister Yacov Rambsel. I also recommend reading the book Alien Encounters by Missler.

                                                1 out of 5 stars Entertainment.......2006-08-26

Being authoritative enough to convince people in the writing business is essential and Drosnin does that and he has "experts" to back him up, but why do we need a code anyway? A little bit of research and you'll find that all these ideas about the future are already out there. There is no doubt the world is going to hell in a hand-basket. Mankind has always been on the brink of war or at war, continuously. Nothing new and few will be surprised if we blow each other up.

Books like these are just another way to generate an income for both writer and publisher while the going is good - they can't lose if wrong because the money's already been made and author's always can leave themselves a back door, in this case something like a catch-22 phrase inferring more than one possible future, etc., etc. to cover themselves. Ultimately this books sells fear. This is a market rich in opportunities these days. We need more books on practical solutions to the human problem. The book is sensationalism trying to be serious. If one considers themselves a genuine Christian, this subject is useless to waste time over.
