    Book Description

ScaLAPACK is an acronym for Scalable Linear Algebra Package or Scalable LAPACK. It is a library of high-performance linear algebra routines for distributed memory message-passing MIMD computers and networks of workstations supporting parallel virtual machine (PVM) and/or message passing interface (MPI). It is a continuation of the LAPACK project, which designed and produced analogous software for workstations, vector supercomputers, and shared memory parallel computers. Both libraries contain routines for solving systems of linear equations, least squares problems, and eigenvalue problems. The goals of both projects are efficiency, scalability, reliability, portability, flexibility, and ease of use. Each Users' Guide includes a CD-ROM containing the HTML version of the ScaLAPACK Users' Guide, the source code for the package, testing and timing programs, prebuilt versions of the library for a number of computers, example programs, and the full set of LAPACK Working Notes.

          Book Description

Nothing has been going right for Vera de Sica, resident of downtown Manhattan, since she arrived in Los Angeles to deliver a speech at a conference: she has felt unappreciated (the conference was sparsely attended) and befuddled (there's too much light in the City of Angels). Now all she needs to do is return her rental car. But when a heavily sweating man in a short-sleeved white shirt tells her to leave the car under a sign that reads GUEST PARKING, Vera's true nightmare begins. Based on more than three years of research into the fastest-growing white-collar crime in America, User I.D. is the incredibly absorbing story of what happens when Vera's identity goes AWOL, coopted by the reluctant girlfriend of the scam artist in the white shirt. The two women couldn't lead more different lives. But in alternating chapters that read like a thriller, Shute explores the psychology of victim and victimizer as each develops an intense fantasy relationship with her other imagined self. As Vera pursues the thief through cyberspace, Jenefer Shute's "riveting and unforgettable" (Washington Post Book World) prose kicks into high gear. User I.D. is both a thrilling read and a trenchant look at the philosophical implications of the networked world in which we live.

3 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Fast Read..........2007-01-13

I almost didn't buy this book because the reviews were less than sterling. But, I know the kind of book I typically enjoy so I changed my mind and stuck it in my cart. Indeed, I ended up finishing this book in about a week (which is pretty fast for me because I have so little time to read). Basically, the book held my interest and moved along...so I was able to stick with it and complete it.

This is a story of identity theft, told in two different "voices" (in alternating chapters). One voice is that of the victim, the other voice is of the perpetrator. Two different women, different lives, different coasts, yet tied together because one stole the identity of the other. It is, of course, a cautionary tale for our times.

As I said, the story moves along. The story is fairly believable and I think we get a sense of who these characters are, and how they come to be in this position. I think the victim character is a little more believable but I suppose that is beside the point. The story is a bit predictable, yet has a few twists, especially at the end. The characters are believable enough but not very sympathetic.

I think the latter point (the fact that the characters are not very sympathetic and indeed fairly drab) are what makes me rate the book three stars instead of four. The story moves along but I didn't care about the characters very much. And I thought the story was rather thin on details. Specifically, some more background on the characters (prior history of their lives, current details on their lives, more friends, etc.) would have made the story a little more realistic and interesting.

However, because the story did hold my interest, I would recommend the book to those looking for an entertaining fast read, particularly if they are interested in the topic of identity theft.

4 out of 5 stars Riverting and Amusing -- What Else Can You Ask For?.......2006-05-07

I disagree with many of the negative reviews of this book, possibly because I am a former New Yorker and find that Shute's characterization of the underpaid, overextended, unappreciated single New York woman is dead-on. I find, too, that Charlotte is a well-wrought and sympathetic character. I enjoyed getting to know these two women. The book is quickly-paced, written in short and snappy chapters that kept me turning the pages. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it for plane rides or a day at the beach.

1 out of 5 stars because I can't give it 1/2 star (hey have to give author credit for writing).......2006-05-07

I felt so bad about not liking this book when i began it that i felt compeled to finish it hoping for some grand ending. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. need i say more? Charlene was a believable character, in a stereo typical white trash sort of way. Vera reminded me of a boring timid little blah mouse, and her boyfriend had the personality of a toothbrush. (no wonder they were together) I love a good mystery, but there is nothing mysterious about the rating this book is getting! Watch a good Lifetime Movie instead

          1 out of 5 stars Don't be a victim.......2006-04-09

This is the story of a woman who is supposed to be smart and capable (she is neither) who is the victim of a criminal who with whom we are supposed to sympathize (I didn't.)

We have all been warned to shred documents with personal information to avoid losing your identity. If you have a paper shredder, you may want to put this book through it to avoid losing the time it takes to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very Modern Horror Story.......2006-02-20

To some of the other critics: unfair to give the author one star because she successfully depicted a character, albeit a character with flaws. You only prove that Shute was successful. It's amateurish to ding the book for its characters just because you wouldn't want to hang out with them.

I loved it -- well-researched, tense, fast-paced, subtle humor -- and highly recommend it. Great job, Ms Shute!

            Description:
Behavioural models derived from on-going field studies can provide the basis for predicting personal action taken to adjust lighting levels, remedy direct glare, and save energy in response to physical conditions. Enabling these behavioural models in advanced lighting simulation programs, such as DAYSIM and the Lightswitch Wizard, allows for a more realistic estimate of lighting use under dynamic conditions. The current downside of these approaches is that the whole building energy impact of manual changes in blind settings and lighting use, including its effect on heating and cooling requirements, is not considered. A sub-hourly occupancy-based control model (SHOCC), which enables advanced behavioural models within whole building energy simulation, is presented. The considered behavioural models are the Lightswitch2002 algorithms for manual and automated light and blind control, while the investigated whole building energy simulation program is ESP-r. The enhanced functionality is demonstrated through annual energy simulations aiming at quantifying the total energy impact of manual control over lights and window blinds. Results show that building occupants that actively seek daylighting rather than systematically relying on artificial lighting can reduce overall primary energy expenditure by more than 40%, when compared to occupants who rely on constant artificial lighting. This underlines the importance of defining suitable reference cases for benchmarking the performance of automated lighting controls. Results also show that, depending on the proportion of buildings occupants that actively seek out daylighting, reduced lighting use through automated control may not always produce anticipated savings in primary energy for indoor climate control. In some cases, reduced lighting use is shown to even increase primary energy expenditure for indoor climate control, trimming down initial primary energy savings in lighting alone. This reveals the superiority of integrated design approaches over simpler daylighting guidelines or rules of thumb.

                Description:
Self-managed learning is the normal way that users learn to work with software within organizations. To be effective, self-managed, learning requires individuals to self-assess their IT knowledge; accurate self-assessment helps them optimize the capabilities they possess and be aware of those they do not. This study demonstrated that, in general, individuals did not accurately self-assess their knowledge of the software they used. However, we also found that the accuracy of self-assessment increased with greater experience in, and better understanding of, IT domains. Organizations need to recognize the self-assessment problem to facilitate effective software learning and to gain the most from their software investments.

This paper estimates R&D depreciation rates for U.S. R&D intensive industries. R&D annually depreciates at; 18% for chemical products, 26% for nonelectrical machinery, 29% for electrical products, and 21% for transportation equipment. These depreciation rates lead to new estimates of the marginal (gross of depreciation) returns to R&D capital; 0.25 for chemical products, 0.31 for nonelectrical machinery, 0.34 for electrical products, and 0.27 for transportation equipment. R&D investment significantly contributed to productivity growth; virtually 100% in chemical products, 55% in nonelectrical machinery, 38 percent in electrical products, and 84% in transportation equipment.

Pearl Abraham's critically acclaimed first novel, The Romance Reader, follows a Hasidic girl caught between the strictures of tradition and the yearnings of her own heart. In her second book, the author tells a different kind of coming-of-age story: Giving Up America charts with heartbreaking assurance the disintegration of a marriage and the loss of faith that inevitably results. Like Abraham's first young heroine, Deena Binet grew up in a strict but loving Hasidic household. Yet when her family returned to Israel after a few years in the United States, Deena stayed behind, and since then has become nothing if not American. She works in advertising, learns to wear jeans and prides herself on remembering the names of rock bands. Even when she marries an Orthodox Jew, she does so against her father's wishes. A Hasidic scholar, he sees that the sum of the Hebrew letters of the couple's names equals the numerical value of the Hebrew word for pain, "which is what this marriage will bring you."

Although her husband, Daniel, keeps kosher and observes the Sabbath, he does so "mechanically," with none of the joy that marked Deena's childhood religious celebrations: "What did remain were the things she couldn't do." Nonetheless, they have been together for seven years before trouble appears. In this case, trouble takes the form of a leggy blonde temp from Daniel's office, a Southern-accented would-be Miss America named Jill. She is, they agree, "fun," in a way none of their other friends are. Together with Jill and her friend Ann the couple tries skiing, takes up dancing--and then Daniel falls in love. As their relationship falls apart, so too does Daniel's attachments to the forms of his faith. He breaks the Sabbath, stops wearing his yarmulke, and starts eating shellfish: "He'd accept no burdens, not Jewishness, not marriage." Faced with the impending breakup, Deena must decide whether to retreat back into her past or forward into an unknowable future.

Abraham's clear-eyed, unsentimental novel is, more than anything else, about that choice: between the safety of childhood and the uncertainty of independence, between the religious life and the secular world. Flying over the ocean on her way to visit her parents, Deena dreams of a ship with Daniel and all her American friends on it, pulling away and leaving her floating alone in the waves: "She had to save her strength and learn to live in the water. She would become a fish." In Giving Up America, Pearl Abraham draws a subtle and compassionate portrait of marriage, divorce, and a woman at sea. --Mary Park

                    Book Description

With her highly praised debut novel, The Romance Reader, Pearl Abraham gave readers their first insider's glimpse of the Hasidic world from a female perspective and sensitively depicted the inner life of a young woman entering adulthood. In Giving Up America, Abraham directs her unerring and compassionate understanding of character to the subject of marriage, as she takes us further in exploring the differences in cultures and values of Hasidic and secular American life. When Deena decides to marry Daniel, who is an Orthodox Jew, Deena's father, a Hasidic scholar, opposes the marriage for Kabbalistic reasons: the numbers assigned to the Hebrew letters in their names add up to form the word "pain." Yet their marriage appears to be blessed. Together, they are restoring an old house, their dream house. Then Daniel brings home from work a young Southerner, who is training for the Miss America pageant, and her best friend. Soon cracks in the foundation of their marriage appear, throwing into question the values Deena grew up with and the notion of what "home" means. Elle described The Romance Reader as "that rare work of

fiction, both a coming-of-age story and a brave, beautifully

rendered expos of a hidden, insular world." With her new novel, Pearl Abraham makes good on Kirkus Reviews' promise that she is "a writer to watch": Giving Up America is a novel that puts her on the map as a writer who has arrived.

Purcahsed this book from discount store for $2 because I liked the cover and title. For once, judging a book by its cover worked out. As a newly wed, the story somewhat depressed me; I identified with Deena and Daniel though. I felt as if Abraham just kind of made the story up as she went, or it was based on her own life. I don't know. Regardless, I couldn't put the book down.

1 out of 5 stars Another bummer book .......2004-12-20

When I finished reading this book the first question that came to my mind was what does this story (novel) have to do with Orthodox or Jewish life. In no way does it resemble anything close to such lifestyle.

Awhile ago I read her first book "The Romance Reader" which although it does not resemble the life of a average orthodox jewish girl, it does portray the the life of a jewish girl struggling with her beliefs and hasidic surroundings.

After reading both books I have come to the conclusion that the author has no vision or imagination for writing novels or fictions. Her first book is actually not a novel but a
portrait of her own life. In this book "Giving Up America" the author attempts to write a novel and all it does is portray her as a person with a poor and immature imagination, even her sex scenes shows that she lacks fantasy or imagination..

Unless youre on a deserted island and there is nothing else to do, I wouldn't recommend waisting your time reading this book.

3 out of 5 stars A Story Told Too Often.......2003-10-16

This was a quick and easy read. Pearl Abraham is able to capture details that the reader can relate to. Unfortunatley, this scenario happens too frequently, not enough thought put in to the relationship before marriage.
It was interesting however how the author's insight into Deena's denial and "allowing" Daniels other relationship.
Daniel's character wasn't developed, which was disappointing, but maybe the author only wanted us to see it from Deena's point of view.
The good thing about this book was it was an easy and entertainong read.
The bad thing was it is a sad story that is told too often.

4 out of 5 stars Giving up America-----> Eva Dekker ( HWC Amstelveen.......2002-12-06

I found the book very interesting because the writer makes us clear what happens in the minds of both persons. She lets us know the differences in their characters. The most interesting for me was that in every chapter you could feel the distance between them growing. There was already a difference between them, but meeting people from the world outside their Jewish community made the developments going faster. If you read the book you feel that it's inevitable that they will split at the end. You feel that there could not be another way.
The writer lets us live the whole story together with the main characters and that is why I liked the book. So....Go buy or rent the book!!!!

                    1 out of 5 stars Worst book I've read in 5 years!.......2002-03-06

I really *wanted* to like this book, but it was, without a doubt, the worst thing I've read in years. I trudged through it, hoping something would finally happen and take shape...like a story, like character development, like a finding a reason the author wrote the thing in the first place.

The characters were flat and dull, the 'affair' was passionless, the Jewish aspects were pointless (and could have been fascinating), the story uninvolving and boring. The main driving emotions here were Pouting and Whining.

The writing was very "clipped", as if Abraham read a few Hemingway novels and thought, "Hey, I could do this, too." And she teaches Writing at NYU? Scary.

Very disappointing book with a lot of missed opportunities.

Join Caroline as she tells about her personal journey toward consciousness and how significant events have impacted her life. Then explore “Archetypes”—universal patterns of consciousness that influence our psychological spiritual development. Find out how archetypal patterns are the link toward considering the possibility that we all have a “Sacred Contract.”

Caroline then explores your connection to the seven levels of power. Each level is not only aligned to a physical system within the body, but also related to external and internal issues that are part of our lives.

From a spiritual perspective, Caroline covers how intuitive sight is related to the capacity to view all events symbolically; the difference between the language of the body and the language of the spirit; how to connect to the energetic information attached to physical events; how your spirit is woven into the events and relationships of your life . . . and much, much more!
