Book Description

Retreating from divorce, geologist Jimmy Steverson buys a tiny mill house on Dillehay Pond. His real-estate agent is disgusted, his father observes that he's reliving summer camp, and his friends think of the place as a weekend fishing cabin. Jimmy likes walking out his back door to his own dock where his bass boat waits, but out his front door lies Randleman Road. The nine houses left isolated on the block after the construction of the super-highway are the remnants of a nineteenth-century Carolina mill village, and the people living in them are remnants, too. An arrest leaves one house vacant, and its unlikely new owner is Karen, a college professor whose life centers on a child with special needs. Karen rebuilds her house and her life, and she anchors Jimmy to the block.

But the world Jimmy's moved into has its own rules, its own language. Across the pond, Totch runs a barbecue place, which is legally a gift shop because Totch can't get a license to run a restaurant; buying an old postcard translates to ordering a beer. Next door lives Mayme Boulineaux, who has no health department permit to sell her popular breakfast breads, known locally and phonetically as "bolenoes," so they're sold in shoeboxes for cash that never enters a cash register. Vivia Wardlaw makes a living at her sewing machine, sending little girls off to beauty pageants in opulent dresses, while she herself is scared to leave her house. Cone Duffy spent his life in the mill and now is buy dying, nursed by his wife Fairy Etta, both as much in love as when they were youths.

The web of neighbor-helping-neighbor is a comfortable net to be caught in, and lax law enforcement is a lure to a young man with marijuana in his kitchen cabinet. Asked to break a rule he can't break, Jimmy forces himself to leave the false security of Randleman Road, and once again become a refugee.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read.......2006-05-10

It takes a few chapters to really enter the world of the old mill village, but then you are hooked on it's cast of fascinating people. We see the community through the eyes of Jimmy, a newcomer to the neighborhood. From the narrator, we are privileged to learn far more about the people of Randleman Road than he ever can. The book is a great look at what becomes of a working class community after the mill closes, something that has happened all over the southeast.

This book was delightful!
Hopefully she will write a sequel.

5 out of 5 stars My First Book.......2006-05-28

This is a two person anthology containing "American Beauty" by Ashley Ladd and "Better than Ice Cream" by me, Alicia Sparks. Both novellas were previously released as ebooks by Ellora's Cave.

Ashley's novella "American Beauty" is a fun, funny read with a plus size heroine and a tough guy cop who is forced to dress in drag to break a case! The adventure begins when he is also forced to room with the heroine, a woman who looks like the answer to every dream he's ever had!

My novella, "Better than Ice Cream," was inspired by my love of ice cream. Laura Reynolds, owner and CEO of I Scream ice cream company has invented a "very special ice cream" that has pretty profound effects on the females who eat it. Her neighbor and resident bad boy Ryan LeJeune doesn't believe an ice cream exists that can be better than a man.

Both these novellas are considered romantic comedy. If you have read and enjoyed them, please write a review and let us know what you think!

I buy a lot of cookbooks, mostly baking oriented. This one is worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Already One of My Favorites!.......2007-09-14

This is the first cookbook I've ever bought from Jill O'Conner, and I immediatly decided I liked her writing as I was reading the introduction. I always read introductions in cookbooks, which a lot of people skip over, but I find them to be good reading.

Of course, you don't by a cookbook for it's introduction, you buy it for it's recipes. The book is divided into four chapters of recipe. Not a lot of chapters for a cookbook, but the quality is much more important then the quanity, and the quality is apparent.

The first chapter is devoted to chocolate, and while Marcel Desaulniers is the authority of chocolate recipes in my opinion, this recipes are all delicious. There are sixteen chocolate recipes, including; triple-layer chocolate silk martini, chocolate caramel pecan souffle cake, and sugar-crusted brownie sundaes.

The second chapter entitled "the pudding club," is full of recipes for all different types of puddings. There are twelve recipes, including; cinnamon doughnut bread pudding, risotto rice pudding, and dark chocolate pudding.

The third chapter is devoted to cookies, cakes, and pies. Twenty-three recipes are included, including; fig cake, caramel butter bars, and maple walnut pie.

The last chapter is "do try this at home," which are recipes for the kid in you. There are eighteen recipes including; cheesecake pops, sticky biscuits, and dirty banana sundaes.

There are an adequate amount of color photos. The book is enough to make me want to order every other one of Jill O'Conner's books.

5 out of 5 stars Hands Down The Best Dessert Book Ever Written!.......2007-09-12

So far I have tried three of the recipes and each one has exceeded my expectations. The author does a great job of making world class desserts attainable by the average home chef wanna be like myself. The recipes are straight forward, easy to follow, yet the result is a rich sophisticated dessert that tastes like you purchased it from a bakery. I served the brownies this past weekend and every guest asked for the recipe. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, luscious treasure chest of you-can-cook-this desserts!.......2007-09-11

This book is a feast in every way. Gorgeous photographs, charming design (little ribbons and bows and sweet-shop-goodies galore); all of which keep me turning the pages, and trying to narrow my list of recipes to make next. Ms. O'Connor writes wonderfully; her prose is by turns hilarious, useful, interesting, moving, and fun to read, and her recipes and instructions and explanations give me a recipe box of sweet treats that I know I can actually make with great results. I love to bake, and know my basics, but she opens doors for me in this book. She "translates" the professional pastry kitchen (a foreign and intimidating land to me) such that I am able to create fabulous (and sometimes ambitious) treats for my family, company, bake sales, potlucks --- maybe I could even open my own bakery......
Nah, too much work. I'll just keep on reading and baking and stirring and saucing my way through this gem of a dessert book, purely for the pleasure of doing so.

A complete novel of science fiction adventure and a host of short novels in one large volume. A Plague of Demons: One man found out the secret behind the aliens who controlled the world, harvesting "dead" soldiers to fight wars on distant worlds-and only he could stop them, if he could keep from getting harvested himself. Thunderhead: An officer has manned an outpost on a lonely planet for years, watching for the alien enemy that may never come, forgotten by the bureaucracy which sent him there-and then the enemy came! Test to Destruction: Aliens are testing a human prisoner to determine how serious a foe the human race might be-and they have chosen the wrong man to Test to Destruction. And much more.

                Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not every story should be reissued.......2007-01-01

Keith Laumer has always been a favorite author of mine. The "Retief" stories- where an interstellar diplomat swashbuckles through red tape and alien invasions alike - are some of the funniest and most entertaining SF that I've ever read. The "Bolo" super-tanks that he created to fight humanity's wars amongst the stars were similarly some of the best military sci-fi of its era.

But a writer as prolific as Laumer cannot always be at the top of his game, and the stories collected here are prime examples of why some work should be left in the dust. Of the eight stories collected here only one, titled "Doorstep" entertained me in any way. It is only ten pages long, but it nicely illustrates a sub-genre of sci-fi that is largely out of style; the ending with a twist. This is where you think you know what is happening, but as the reader you are missing one crucial fact that, when revealed, completely changes your perception of what has gone before. "Doorstep" has a clever twist that is accomplished with aplomb.

Unfortunately those are the only ten worthwhile pages in this collection. The sixty page long novella "Thunderhead" deserves a mention for being a good concept poorly executed, but the rest of the stories don't even rise to that level. The title book, "A Plague of Demons", and a later story, "Greylorn", are the two worst offenders. Both have plots that jump from one setting to another in the last act with little to no foreshadowing or justification, and you can't help but thinking that Laumer had simply written himself into a corner and forced the story into a new channel to get a conclusion.

The remainder of the stories vary from uninteresting to mildly bad. Overall, none of them come close to justifying the eight dollar cover price. If you're a Laumer fanatic, it is interesting to see some of his lesser-known work, but if you're a science fiction fan looking for a good story, check out the Retief or Bolo books instead.

5 out of 5 stars The short story that made me love SF.......2005-08-28

A plague of demons" is a great story. I recommend it to anyone who likes a fast pace storyline and an ending you didn't know was coming!

The other stories in this book is good too, but "A plague..." is truly great fiction!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Stuff, if you're up for it........2003-05-10

This collection of Keith Laumer's works is part of the Baen Books republication of Laumer's writings. It seems that Laumer is one of those authors that people either love, or can't finish the first paragraph without screaming. If you are one of those who loves his work, get the whole series. You won't regret it.

Many of these stories have been out of print for a while and have been hard to find. I have fond memories of reading Laumer while serving in the Air Force on missions in the Middle East (ironically, detached to the State Department much as Laumer himself was), thinking "aside from the advanced hardware, this isn't fiction". Many of the stories in this volume are inspirational in a dark way, as they share a common thread of many of his works, that of the lone man doing what is right, against hopeless odds, even to self destruction, because of principle. It's a timeless lesson, but one many need to learn.

Skip Eric Flint's rather pointless comments, and just read the stories and David Drake's memories of Laumer.

                      Book Description

"Sacred gaze" denotes any way of seeing that invests its object--an image, a person, a time, a place--with spiritual significance. Drawing from many different fields, David Morgan investigates key aspects of vision and imagery in a variety of religious traditions. His lively, innovative book explores how viewers absorb and process religious imagery and how their experience contributes to the social, intellectual, and perceptual construction of reality. Ranging widely from thirteenth-century Japan and eighteenth-century Tibet to contemporary America, Thailand, and Africa, The Sacred Gaze discusses the religious functions of images and the tools viewers use to interpret them. Morgan questions how fear and disgust of images relate to one another and explains how scholars study the long and evolving histories of images as they pass from culture to culture. An intriguing strand of the narrative details how images have helped to shape popular conceptions of gender and masculinity. The opening chapter considers definitions of "visual culture" and how these relate to the traditional practice of art history.
Amply illustrated with more than seventy images from diverse religious traditions, this masterful interdisciplinary study provides a comprehensive and accessible resource for everyone interested in how religious images and visual practice order space and time, communicate with the transcendent, and embody forms of communion with the divine. The Sacred Gaze is a vital introduction to the study of the visual culture of religions.
