    Book Description

Retreating the Political presents many of the key issues at the heart of Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe and Jean-Luc Nancy's work. Published here for the first time in English, we see some of the key motifs that have characterized their work: their debt to a Heideggerian pre-understanding of philosophy; the centrality of the "figure" in western philosophy and the totalitarianism of both politics and the political. Through contemporary readings of the political in Freud, Heidegger and Marx they reveal how philosophy relies on the political for its representation and reinvention and how it has done so ever since Socrates' meditation on the polis.

5 out of 5 stars Race Relationships in Bruhwiler's "Simon Philipe".......2007-01-24

John Bruhwiler has written an interesting novel that deals with love for the women in Simon Philipe's life, and Simon's love for horses. But what makes this tale intriguing is that Bruhwiler weaves the taboo subject of race and interracial dating into the story. Though the subject of race is certainly not new in American literature, especially Southern literature, it is not often that the venue of racism is filtered through such a self-proclaimed enlightened individual.

Perhaps Simon Philipe is merely the epitome of those contemporary middle-class Southern whites who pride themselves on being `liberals' simply because they have one or two black friends. The kind of liberals that leave their proverbial Utopian suburbia and grunge down on Beale Street or an all-black blues club because it's the cool thing to do. No one wants to be thought of as being unhip. It is not the fact of having friends of another color that places one under suspect, but the mere fact that one cannot forget or even forgive the fact that the person is of another race. Simon Philipe is obsessed with color; and what makes it a tragic case, he has no idea of his obsession. He not only notes that his kids have friends, but his kids have black friends. He arrogantly feels that he was one of those individuals who "granted" blacks equal rights, though he "...never met one he wanted to be close friends with..." (33).

Bruhwiler brilliantly uses Memphis, Tennessee as the backdrop for his novel, a city that has had a history of racial tension, and where every political decision is tattered with race and racial allegations. It is now the twenty-first century in Southern towns, and though racism might not be so blatant, Bruhwiler still takes notice of individuals who accessorize their lives with a person of another color. Sybil, Simon's love interests, has him pegged: "I don't think you're really in love with me. I'm probably just another challenge to you. Another adventure. You're intrigued because I'm black. You want to show your colleagues, your friends, your neighbors, this racist town, how progressive you are" (347). Simon admits that Sybil is probably right.

It is ironic that Simon Philipe places so much thought and emphasis on race, being an outsider himself. Perhaps he does have an outsider's eye to what is happening in Memphis and how Memphians interact with one another. No one--black or white--can explain race relationships in Southern cities, not even those who were born and bred here. Yet, Simon has the audacity to teeter on the verge of trying to single-handedly bring the races together in a patronizing effort. This won't happen. Only liberals and the upper-middle class believe that everybody is happy and content with race relations in Memphis.

    5 out of 5 stars A powerful story.......2006-07-09

Betrayed by his young partner after an adolescent sex act, the orphan Simon Philipe is brought before Sister Elisabeth, who explains the four kinds of love as understood by the ancient Greeks. John Bruhwiler's recent novel "Simon Philipe" finds its center of gravity in this compassionate scene. The kind, wise nun in small town Quebec is a loving mother figure -- the moderating feminine influence required to save Simon from descent into the self-destructive violence and sexuality of unmitigated masculinity. Sister Elisabeth also represents the best aspects of Catholicism, from which Simon develops a genuine Christian morality.

Strong tensions between male and female, Nature and society, sex and religion underly the novel's themes and permeate the adventures and characters of "Simon Philipe". During his first 30 years, covered in flashbacks, Simon's life follows a series of arcs through the violence, danger and sexuality of masculine life in rural Canada, the far North, urban ghettos and the north-central US plains. Each arc, extending further than the last, brings him back to the relative safety of Sister Elisabeth or, after her death, the temporary comfort of a woman's arms, the last of these belonging to his wife, Ellen.

Attending university leads to an appreciation of French literature, offering Simon an intellectual outlet for his energies and the hope of escaping from his troubled past. The novel's present tense takes place in Memphis of the 1970's, where Simon is now a divorced professor at a small college, with partial responsibility for three teenage children. Bruhwiler's engaging story deftly weaves the visceral flashbacks into the present day action. However, it is Simon's love of horses, a passion that defines him to a greater extent than career or family, which fully integrates past and present.

Simon's horses provide an essential connection to the unforgiving Nature of his youth. They bring vitality, joy and danger into his life. Bruhwiler's prose reaches great heights in the many horse scenes -- evoking the poetic energy of these mysterious creatures, while remaining grounded in realism and a straightforward honesty that delivers the excitement and pain to the reader, unfiltered.

This same honesty benefits the rest of the novel. Race and racism are seen from Simon's point of view, without regard for modern sensitivities. Many female characters are also introduced from Simon's point of view, with lustful attention to their physical appearance. In every case, characters are allowed to speak for themselves in dialogue that rings true. Likewise, Simon's flaws and virtues are allowed to reveal themselves throughout the story.

"Simon Philipe" provides the reader no easy answers, but like all great tales, it unfolds a compelling plot with interesting characters and pulls important themes effortlessly from the darkness into the reader's view. Still suffering from his divorce, engaging in dysfunctional behavior and enduring new troubles that echo his turbulent youth, Simon finds his life following yet another arc. This arc may never close, but it is converging hopefully towards his new love, Sybil.

5 out of 5 stars A man and his horses.......2006-06-24

From being beaten piteously by hobos to competing in hazardous equine jumping events, Simon Philipe has lived his life on the edge. But his new relationship with a biracial woman many years his junior, has him unnerved as never before.

This charming gallop through a French Canadian turned Southern Memphis man's rugged life takes us through the trials of living in rural Canada to the heartache and joys of caring for horses. Saddle up and start with the search for a missing horse...his beloved Jesse.

5 out of 5 stars Simon Philipe--A Man Who Loves Horses and Women.......2006-04-11

John Bruhwiler, in his 400-page novel, reveals a title character who is so deliciously flawed that the reader receives a wondrous tutorial in tenacity in addition to the transforming story. The story is beautifully woven with the past and the present, with creatures and humans, and with a slow pace, ending in a furious rush of hooves and relationships. Readers will love the way Simon continually makes mistakes with everyone from nuns to trappers. Every time Simon gets beaten up physically and emotionally, the reader gains another opportunity from the author to urge him to get up to try another day. We never tire of shaking our heads about Simon's inabilities to see himself alone and separated in a world that is predictably unstable (no pun intended). Bruhwiler gives us a hero whose innocence and transcendence are immersed in a writing style that clearly shows a love of horses, women, children, and all things on the earth that urgently struggle with pain and possibility. This is a great read for everyone who understands horses, loves travel and Memphis, and yearns for some answers about relationships. Book clubs will find great fodder (pun intended) for discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Simon Philipe-- don't miss it.......2006-03-26

    Simon Philipe

This first novel has many of the best qualities of a good memoir. It's readable in two ways-- generous margins and type size, plus a fast-paced narrative that's hard to put down. Even if you don't ride horses, you will enjoy the sensations of sitting higher, moving faster, and leaping over things with ease-- and with a bit of risk. Socially, Simon's horses help him raise his kids, gather with like minded friends, and court a new woman.

We learn in flashback that Simon is an orphan, left in a cardboard box on the doorstep of a nunnery in Canada. Sister Elizabeth, his early mentor, is really the most important woman in his life. His early life ranges from Toronto to Hudson's Bay, Detroit to New Mexico. As a boy Simon gets beaten up a few times, then enjoys a few liaisons before marriage. He grows up to be a college professor in Memphis, teaching French and keeping horses. He loves horses and women. If your book group includes both women and men, you will find no shortage of things to talk about.

When his wife Ellen wants him out of the house, he becomes a single father caring for two boys and a girl. The anguish of a sudden divorce is rendered in convincing emotional detail, and so is Simon's loneliness that follows. He meets Sybil, a younger woman of a different race, at a Catholic bible study group he is leading in the midtown home of a friend. And then. . . .

SIMON PHILIPE is a literary novel-- no formulas, no detectives or murders-- but a vivid evocation of a time and place as a very human story unfolds. Recommended especially for Southern progressive church folks; a must read for Memphians and horse lovers. You'll be glad you read it, and you'll tell your friends.

5 out of 5 stars An inside look at Guerrilla filmmaking.......2000-08-16

Spikes Lee's gotta have it is an essential book for independent filmmakers. It's a book in three parts. The first part begins with an interview of Spike lee By Nelson George sometime after SGHI premiered and he became a big shot. But the second part is the most appealing. It is the production diary in which Spike goes into complete detail how he got she's gotta have it made. The Diary is from the intitla idea to postproduction. It's filled with loads of insights into the struggles he was up against. In fact it's so indepth he even mentiones when his heat and lights go out. Then finally theres the script, which is like the icing on the cake. Hard to find but worth it because you really get to understand how he works and how he got to where he is. Essential!

Camille Roberts will only marry for money instead of love just like any typical woman. The guy she's will marry is 57 years. He already has three children of his own two girls and a boy, that's the reason why he doesn't want to have any more kids. This book tells what people go through everyday.

5 out of 5 stars Love at what cost?.......2005-08-13

Camille Roberts is determined that she will only marry for money. Love comes in a poor second for her in SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT by Niqui Stanhope. She has found a 57-year-old rich man who has asked her to marry him. He's not much in the love department, and he doesn't want any children, but she's willing to forego all that for the unlimited credit card he gave her while they were engaged and the thought of her life of leisure after they are married. Knowing what she'll be giving up and feeling the need for one last mad lovemaking session, she travels to Jamaica on her friend's private jet for a final fling. She is determined to find the most sexy, good-looking man for a one-night stand because she doesn't believe in being an unfaithful wife, even if her husband isn't interested in satisfying her physical needs. What she doesn't count on is falling head over heels for that one-night stand: a poor Jamaican hustler, or so she thinks. Just how important is money to her after all?

This is an amusing romp through the fairy tale life of Camille Roberts. It is well written and definitely makes you want to visit Jamaica to see the island paradise for yourself. There are enough twists in the plot to keep if from becoming an ordinary romance story. At times the suspense gets a bit tense, forcing you to continue to turn those pages.

Camille Roberts is marrying for money as she knows the comforts of wealth make up for her itch not properly scratched by her Anthony. Camille is staying at the exclusive Hedonism III on northern Jamaica as her final groove before she ties the knot. At a masquerade party, she meets attorney Harry Britton. That night on the sheets she finds her groove; Harry does too though she wore her mask throughout their sexual encounter. In the morning light, Camille is gone leaving diamonds behind as a payment.

The son of Guyana's Prime Minister Harry has access to strong support when he requires it. He needs it because he wants more from this mysterious Camille who flew back to the states in a private jet. He begins his search for her while she wonders if her safe marriage is worth the effort as she cannot get Britton out of her mind or her rebellious body. When Harry finds her as he knows he will; he plans to kiss her all over, but hide his affluent background from her.

HE'S GOTTA HAVE IT, the sequel to WHATEVER LOLA WANTS, is a delightful contemporary romance starring two likable protagonists. The key to Niqui Stanhope's tale is that although Camille appears ready to marry for money, she remains a nice person. The return of Lola in a strong supporting role adds depth of understanding what motivates Camille to go for the money though many readers will not like her attitude anyway. Harry is a fine counterpart to Camille as they reverse perceptions about one another. Fans will want to read Ms. Stanhope's fine tale.

4 out of 5 stars The Story Goes On...........2006-04-06

Here we go again. You ever read a story and wonder what happens after the book is over? Well, this is not that story. There is no happily ever after or murder-suicide for Tammad and Terrillian. Oh, no. This is round three of the story. Tammad tries to force Terril to obey him and to admit that she loves him by pretending he's going to sell her. He tells her he will sell her to another llenda because he says he makes her unhappy. Of course, you have the usual return characters and the introduction of some strange new characters and Terril trys to runaway, again. However, there is a great deal more understanding between Tammad and Terril by the end of the book.

I guess, the reason this book is good, but not my favorite, is there wasn't anything profoundly suprising or shocking in this book. Don't get me wrong, it's a good story and I like it, but I don't think I'll re-read it as much as I do the second book because it's sorta an extension, rather than a true sequel to the second book. I think if I had read this book first, I would like it even more.

In this part of the series Terrillian is again with Tamad but the Prince that was once her body slave (in part 2) wishes to fight Tamad for her. This leads to a quest to the anvil that lets people see themselves as they truly are. Because of her PSI there are great repercussions for Terrillian after her visit to the anvil. Like the whole series worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME Revelations!: The Dissolution of the World.......2004-03-30

This is hands down one of the most important books I have ever read. If you are interested in the "end times" and the invisible (to most) forces that permeate this world, then you will be blown away by what is revealed here. Mr. Danielou offers his reader a truely staggering and comprehensive explanation of the Cycles of Time (we are now living in the Twilight of the most dark and dense cycle, the Kali Yuga or the Age of Conflict & Confusion); a profound understanding of how consciousness creates reality (an ancient metaphysical precept, way before any 'new age'); exact symptoms of the Kali Yuga (including 'pre-cooked food will be readily available' - meaning the ancients knew that fast food would be herald a degenerate civilization); and a list of the events that occur as this final cycle of Time brings the inevitable dissolution of the world.

As I have been urging my friends to read this book for years, I have been praying that Inner Traditions would reprint it. While anything that Alain Danielou wrote will open your mind and alter your consciousness, this may have been his most valuable book.
