"One can only speak properly about paintings in front of paintings," Paul Cézanne once said. It is usually, though, critics who speak in front of paintings, not artists. With an eye toward rectifying that situation, Michael Kimmelman, chief art critic of the New York Times, constructed Portraits. He invited individual artists to meet him at museums, then tagged along on their peregrinations through various galleries--sometimes the most unlikely ones. At New York's Metropolitan Museum, the late Roy Lichtenstein, papa of pop, stopped to praise some frou-frou Fragonards. Who knew? "Clearly there's something wrong with me," Lichtenstein said.

Kimmelman's knowledge of art is astonishingly broad, and he has a way with questions that ignite each artist's memories, reflections, and opinions. Otherwise, he inserts himself only to offer enough biographical data or physical description to bring a reader up-to-date and up close. For the most part, he simply listens. Closely. The result is a series of interviews so cozy readers may feel they're eavesdropping. Few readers will ever make another foray through the Metropolitan or the Museum of Modern Art or London's National Gallery completely alone. After devouring these "portraits"--most of which appeared originally as articles in the Times's art pages--they will be accompanied forevermore by the lively, eccentric, thoughtful, unguarded voices of Jacob Lawrence, Kiki Smith, Wayne Thibaud, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Elizabeth Murray, Cindy Sherman, Richard Serra, Leon Golub and Nancy Spero, Brice Marden, Hans Haacke, and Chuck Close. --Peggy Moorman

5 out of 5 stars Artists On Art.......2000-06-06

What could be better than going through art museums with artists and listening to their comments about the art on display and the artists who created that art? Michael Kimmelman, a distinguished art critic, had the great good fortune to do just that, and he wisely put himself in the background and let some very articulate people express themselves concerning things that they have thought about their whole lives. These are people who are passionate about art and who know all about making art. Some of the comments are educational and some are funny and, depending on the artists you like or dislike, some you might find irritating. For example, here is Chuck Close at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC: "About some of the other artists he passes along the way he is dismissive. Renoir is "Italian restaurant painting and unless you're having pizza you wouldn't want to look at it." He doesn't care much for Titian or Tintoretto either." But before you dismiss this as a comment by somebody saying something to be outrageous, you should know that at the age of 48 Mr. Close had a spinal artery collapse, which left him what is called an incomplete quadriplegic. He had to relearn to paint, with brushes strapped to his hands. (An irony, not mentioned by Mr. Kimmelman, is that in his later years, due to very bad arthritis, Renoir also had to have brushes strapped to his hands!) Listen to Mr. Close again, talking about a trip to The Met after his disability had struck him down: "So I went to look at the Petrus Christuses and Holbeins and realized that everything I loved in the history of painting, and portrait painting in particular, is small and tight and the product of fine motor control, which I had lost. I was depressed for days, but then I ended up with a cathartic experience because I found myself in my studio feeling so happy just to be working again that I was literally whistling while I painted and at the same time tears were streaming down my cheeks." My heart sank when I read that paragraph! Another artist expresses his opinion that the greatest artist of the 20th century was not Picasso and not Matisse, but rather Pierre Bonnard. A very large statement to make! What I found especially interesting was that 3 or 4 of the artists, with different styles, all agreed on the greatness of Ingres and all were angered by the commonly held opinion that although he was a master of line, Ingres was not a very good colorist. These artists felt that Ingres was not only a good colorist but that he was a great colorist! Even better, they tell you why they feel he was a great colorist. This is a wonderful book and I wish I could have been a mouse in the corner when Mr. Kimmelman was walking and talking with these artists!

5 out of 5 stars Superb reading....a real joy.......1998-10-24

Tuck this book into your weekend bag and stow away to some cozy spot, then dive in and enjoy. This one's a huge treat. As the editor of a new art series from Abrams and as someone who does not know Mr. Kimmelman personally, other than as an anonymous admirer of his work, I rejoiced when I read this book, because it teaches, it refreshes, it challenges, and, more than all else, it inspires. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Quote from Robert Hughes of Time Magazine.......1998-05-20

"Michael Kimmelman is the most acute American art critic of his generation, and Portraits, his first book, is a fine debut. Patiently, inquisitively and with remarkable insight, he coaxes from artists a whole range of responses to art that take us, in their own words, to the heart of their own work. A valuable book and a great read."--Robert Hughes

Book Description

What woman hasn't stood in front of a packed closet and thought, "I haven't a thing to wear." What she's really thinking, says Tracy McWilliams, is "I don't have anything to wear that looks good and makes me feel good." According to McWilliams, most women shop and dress from emotion. This book teaches them that they can dress logically with a bit of self-awareness and planning. This book defines the seven principles of good dressing - among them, Accessories Make an Outfit, Quality Never Goes Out of Style, Dress from the Top Down, and Visualize Yourself Beautiful - and explodes five clothing myths. In the process readers learn how to devise their individual, best dressing process, dressing plan, and dressing picture. McWilliams explains how to express inner beauty with smart clothing choices, without becoming slaves to trends that don't fit one's body or personality.

5 out of 5 stars beauty is an attitude.......2006-07-27

A book on style that starts from the inside--yes, please! It's great to feel good in your clothes, but that's frosting on the cake. To feel beautiful inside and out takes so much more than a great scarf or well-cut jacket (fabulous as those are!), and this book is one of the very few that truly recognizes that. It's a shame that some people spend a huge amount of time and money on trying to perfect their outer image without realizing that there are people who feel (and are!) beautiful in thrift-store clothes and there are people wearing clothes from Vogue and W who feel flawed and ugly. This book goes much deeper than many books on style, and for that reason it's a fantastic addition to the books that focus only on fashion tips.

3 out of 5 stars Sigh..........2006-07-16

This book is o.k., just o.k.. The advice is fine but not revolutionary. There are other resources which can and do, cover the same subjects with greater clarity.

I recommend The Pocket Stylist which remains my all-time favorite (I am a bit addicted to books on fashion and style).

Try "Ready to Wear", "The Pocket Stylist" or "Does This Make Me Look Fat?".

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-01-23

This is a great book which will help you to re-evaluate your wardrobe and identify items which can work for you.

If nothing else it might help you get the strength to clean out your closet:)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - Highly recommended!.......2004-12-05

Dress to Express is an empowering book that shows you how to look and feel your absolute best. It gives you the tools to define the image you want to project, and then how to select the right clothing and accessories to suit your personality and body shape. It also helps you overcome all types of clothing issues, including our emotional patterns regarding clothing.

It's also such an inspiring book as the emphasis is just as much on inner beauty, confidence and self-esteem. I loved all the exercises and checklists throughout the book, especially the personality clothing types. The book has really made shopping so much easier and more enjoyable. I can't recommend it highly enough!

5 out of 5 stars What's with the hate, boys?.......2006-06-20

I cannot understand the negative reviews, or the assertion that this would offend all older readers. Let me assure you... not everyone over the age of 18 found this book offensive. I loved this book, although admittedly I'm a fan of Mr. Slott from his clever work on She-Hulk, so there you are. In my honest opinion, I think you would have to be brain dead or lacking in all sense of humor to hate this book.

This book deals with the relationship of the Human Torch to Spiderman over the years, from when they were rival teenage superheroes, to the present. It also deals with the relationship between Peter Parker and Johnny Storm, which is I think what makes this book really special. Peter Parker was the sometimes photographer of the FF in the comics, and to Johnny it seemed like this average individual lived a charmed and enviable life; at the same time, Spiderman is insanely jealous of the Human Torch, as he always was when Stan wrote them, and this triangular relationship makes for some great, snappy reading.

The art is not bad, but nothing special. I do enjoy the manga-style size of the binding of this trade, though, as it is much easier to carry than the traditional, 8x11 full sized trade.

In Dan Slott's typical fashion, this book mixed hilarious moments with some really touching soul-bearing moments, most notably the scene in which Spiderman (in costume) shares some of his grief about Gwen Stacy's murder. It is very similar to Brian Vaughan's or Gail Simone's style, or even more accurately, the style of TV writers Joss Whedon and David E. Kelley. If you are someone who enjoys that style, you will appreciate this book.

5 out of 5 stars OLD SCHOOL FUN.......2006-03-15

MY FAVORITE STORIE IN THIS BOOK IS "AUTO MOTIVES" .
PARKER (not spider-man) GETS A JOB WITH THE FAN. 4 IS A INTERN AND LEARNS OF A ANTI-GRAVITY DEVICE WHICH HE (as spider-man) AND THE TORCH STEAL FOR THE "SPIDER MOBILE" (long storie) , SO IT CAN DRIVE UP WALLS . NEVER HAVE I SEEN SPIDER-MAN ACT LIKE THIS OUT-SIDE OF "TWISTED TOY FAIR THEATRE" .
IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A BOOK THAT HAS MARVEL'S HEROES ACTING LIKE THEY SHOULD BE , BUY THIS BOOK !
I'M ALSO LOOKING FOREWORD TO MORE BOOKS WRITEN BY : DAN SLOTT , WHO WROTE THIS GREAT SHORT STORIE , WHO COULD ALSO BE ONE OF THE NEXT GREAT COMIC WRITERS OUT THERE .
ALSO , LETS SEE MORE BOOKS LIKE THIS ONE FOR OTHER MARVEL HEROES !

4 out of 5 stars Can Spider-Man and the Human Torch survive their friendship?.......2006-03-13

Before the X-Men showed up, Spider-Man and the Human Torch were the two teenage superheroes for Marvel, which was a couple of decades removed from having the dozens of under-aged superheroes you need for any sort of legionnaire-type outfit. "Spider-Man/Human Torch: I'm With Stupid" does not get to the punch line of the title until the final frame, but this trade paperback collecting the five issues certainly has fun with the characters before coming up with a decent payoff to their rivalry. Told by Dan Slott (writer), Ty Templeton (penciler), and assorted inkers), these stories take place at various times in the lives of the two heroes and are not told in chronological order, so expect to jump around in Marvel history and get ready for a some slapstick comedy involving flames and webbing. There are no great dramatic stories awaiting you in these pages:

(1) "Picture Perfect" has Johnny Storm tired of seeing Spider-Man in the papers all of the time instead of the Human Torch, so he decides to get Peter Parker to take photographs of the Torch in action. Irony abounds, and the whole point here is the jokes, such as when Spider-Man tangles with Paste-Pot Pete (as soon as he stop laughing). Then Doctor Doom shows up and things get a little serious, but in the end Johnny Storm's hair is in a box (really).

(2) "Catch You on the Flipside" begins with the Torch tangling with the Vulture, which sets up the idea of our two heroes changing places since the Torch claims he can do whatever Spider-Man can. So Spider-Man joins the rest of the Fantastic Four to deal with a subspace fissure while the Torch tangles with Kraven the Hunter, and the question is which one will come out ahead, but with a laxative in their coffee (really).

(3) "Auto-Motives" sees the return of the Amazing Spider-Mobile (but no Spider-Cave or Spider-Butler). Spider-Man is remembering the late Gwen Stacy, while the Human Torch is dealing with his breakup with Crystal. So if working on the Spider-Mobile together, so it will drive on the side of buildings, does not help the two superheroes bond, maybe fighting the Red Ghost and his super apes will do it.

(4) "Cat's Paw" begins with Johnny Storm dressed up as Spider-Man and then the She-Hulk shows up dressed as a French maid. Then things get strange. Peter Parker is wearing the black Spider-Man suit and is hanging out with the Black Cat, but when she ends up going to a big affair hosted by the Black Panther with Johnny, Peter about blows a gasket. When is a robbery not a robbery? This issue would answer that question (not really).

(5) "Together Again" takes place "right now" with the Torch and Spider-Man at their accustomed meeting place on top of Lady Liberty going over everything that has happened to them in previous comic book adventures. The problem is what happened that day at Peter Parker's school. The Torch was there to speak to the kids and some nuts with gun shows up and get the drop on everybody at which point Peter Parker has to let Johnny Storm know that Spider-Man is there; but only if the Torch can get it through his thick head. So the two old friends have something to talk about, do they not?

Actually, it is the epilogue of this one that is the best part of this collection as these two finally admit they have always been jealous of each other and they get together as friends, which means family is involved as well. Again, these are not seminal stories in the hero of either character, but they are told in good fun and make for a nice change of pace from what has been happening with "Spider-Man: The Other, Evolve or Die."

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2005-10-03

I've really enjoyed all of Straczynski's Amazing Spider-man trades and most of Waid's Fantastic Four trades, so when I heard of a trade paperback consisting of 5-stand alone "untold stories" of these 2 characters, I thought it would be pretty forgetable. I was wrong: this is genius. First of all, it's absolutely hilarious; second of all, it showcases genuine friendship between the two. The thing I enjoyed most was watching the revolving cast of girlfriends: Betty, Dorrie, Gwen, MJ, Crystal, and Black Cat all make appearances. There's lots of good jokes for those who read the original comic books (I'm too young, but I'm read most of the Essential series). If you recognize the name "Paste-Pot Pete," you'll be able to appreciate one of the best inside jokes of the volume. Slott writes a story about each important era of the Duo: the early years, the Gwen Stacy/Crystal era, the time right after Gwen's death- complete with the Spidey mobile, the 80's with Black Cat and the symbiote costume, and finally today's comics- in which Johny finally discovers that Peter is Spidey. (After Johny mentions teaming up with Spidey's clone, the two agree to just "skip over that period.") Despite the fact that these are 5 stand-alone stories, they keep referring back to events earlier in the trade, and together this makes a great story. It's appropriate for kids, but people who have been longer fans will appreciate it the most.

5 out of 5 stars Pure joy!.......2005-08-19

Five stories starting from high school, passing through the seventies along the way and ending in present day all charting the relationship between two characters whose personalities, even their very ethos, are polar opposites. Perhaps that's why they are so damn good together!
Maybe it was the change in artist or the dreadful decision to turn Gwen Stacy into a bit of a slut, but JMS lost me with 'Sins Past'. I thought I'd check this out due to rabid reviews on Aint it Cool, and it really didn't disappoint. It's retro but in a very knowing way... it at the same time parodies but is also hugely reverential of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's stuff, and puts just enough knowing references in there to allow you to go along with the brilliantly off-beat stories Dan Slott has come up with. You'll have to be a bit hardcore to get all of the references made concerning Spidey and Torch's history (some passed me by) but don't let that put you off. This book has something that the superstar guest writers at Marvel are sorely lacking - a real sense of fun. I laughed out loud several times, and was even touched at the end by looking at the photographic evidence of the genuine bond between Parker and Storm.

The fact that a whole story devoted to the Spider-Mobile (let's be honest, a stupid idea from the very beginning) is one of my favourites is testament to Slott's skill - he makes the ridiculous engaging and entertaining. And let's be honest that's a great gift when you're writing about superheroes.

Strangely, despite it's day-glo illustrations and bizzaro plots, I'd recommend this to the more mature comic fan. It doesn't have much in the way great action and I'm sure "the kids" will dismiss it as silly. The comic's real strength is in the wit, the understanding of the characters (at various stages in their life) and the genuine warmth. And huge nostalgia appeal for those that remember the Marvel Golden Years.

And thanks Dan for addressing something that's always bugged me about Parker... for a nerd with guilt issues how has he managed to get so many hot women? Gwen? Betty? Felicia? Mary Jane? The man's a sexual dynamo!!

I read this book on the way to my last job interview. And I got the job. Now, I'm not saying that I was successful by being a bitch, but being in touch with my needs and goals was certainly a help. This humorous look at why women don't get what they need and want uses cartoons by Nicole Hollander (Sylvia) to illustrate strategies for "getting over toxic niceness" and saying what you really mean. Perhaps the world would be a nicer place if we all stopped fretting over the "B" word.

    Book Description

Don't even pretend you don't know what I'm talking about! Yes, we all know she's there-and the more you try to suppress her, the uglier it gets. So, ladies, let this calendar empower you to call it as you see it.

-- Wise up to toxic niceness -- The bitch in every woman --...and the men who love her -- The 10-minute bitch

Plus the sassiest and savviest quotations from legendary bitches (you know who you are).

    4 out of 5 stars Fun read.......2007-06-13

This is a really fun read, but to be honest I preferred her Inner Bitch Guide to Relationships. Whenever I get confused in a relationship, I draw a hot bath and read a chapter or two out of that book. It always reminds me who I am. This book is a good addition to it though, but I think I had already tapped into my inner bitch before I read it.

3 out of 5 stars Cute but unremarkable.......2007-05-24

This book was definitely not as funny as I expected. It is cute, but doesn't say anything revolutionary. It's an okay light read and it's affirming, but not exactly earth-shaking.

    4 out of 5 stars Great choice.......2007-02-10

I thought this calendar was really funny and bought it for a couple different people as gifts. They absolutely loved it - a great way to start the day with a little humor!

1 out of 5 stars Why Not Just Be Nice to People? .......2006-10-09

That's the real way to get ahead. Nobody likes self-serving, self-promoting people. Being pleasant to those who are pleasant to you a winning strategy. I sometimes feel very sorry for women due to the intellectual poverty of their self-help books. I cannot imagine worse advice to give to anyone than what this author offers up here. It should be filed under fantasy. The work is a response to the "toxic niceness" which women supposedly practice, but this term is misapplied as she seems to equate toxic niceness with simple social diplomacy. Although, Hilts believes that "b*tch" is the term that is actually misapplied as, in her mind, it is more indicative of a woman being successful than anything else. For proof she cites the perfectly understood personas of Hillary Clinton, Barbra Streisand, and Gloria Steinem. All I can say to that is, Q.E.D.

As one might expect, in relationships, Hilts falls squarely on the side of the "men are helots" camp. For women, there are no rules, but for men, the only way they deserve intimacy is if they know and respect every aspect of a woman's personality. Well, easy enough! We should thank her though for providing yet more bizarre evidence of the dominatrix approach to dating. When Hilts's describes her princely man as one who takes care of the kids, cooks, and sooths while also being offended by beer advertisements, you have to wonder if her editors even had straight faces as they proofed it. This book is a joke.

    3 out of 5 stars Just OK........2005-12-24

This book was just ok. I read it in about an hour. It offers some good advice and some not so good. The author states that women in touch with their inner bitch cannot be friends with other women also in touch with theirs. So basically we need only surround ourselves with wimpy people we do not respect. Also the author seems to have a personal negative vendetta against the world. I think there are probably better books on this subject out there. I unfortunately will be returning my copy.

I am. Always have been. I'm so nice that my friends (former co-workers) bought this page-a-day for me for Christmas! What an eye opener! This calendar (and the book, which I subsequently purchased) are my current daily regimen for adding a little backbone to my life. The key is Toxic Niceness - what I was told growing up was the way I "should" be. Being polite and friendly and helpful and a good team player and all of the things that have made me a doormat for countless bosses and co-workers over the years. This is a great daily reminder that my satisfaction level doesn't have to go down to bring others' up. I highly recommend this to any woman who was ever the last one in the office at night with a huge project that landed on her desk at 4:30.
