From “a great and true voice of our time” (Washington Post Book World), comes this story of Proffy, a twelve-year-old living in Palestine in 1947. When Proffy befriends a member of the occupying British forces who shares his love of language and the Bible, he is accused of treason by his friends and learns the true nature of loyalty and betrayal. Translated by Nicholas de Lange.

5 out of 5 stars such is our story: it comes from darkness, wanders around, and returns to darkness.......2006-08-19

One day, Proffi sees the words "low-down traitor" painted on his wall, and next thing he knows, he is summoned to a trial for his treachery. What is he guilty of?

Proffi is a twelve-year old boy from Jerusalem. It is 1947 and Israel is on the verge of independence. The British are still in the country and as they prepare to leave, everyone is speculating what is going to happen. We get to know the situation from Proffi's point of view (he, as an adult, is the narrator), and, although he is a library rat and an unusually intelligent (bookish intelligence though) boy, who likes to play with words and loves encyclopedias, obviously he does not understand everything. With his two friends, they are obsessed with the war and form an underground unit, playing heroes of the Israeli liberation movement which is the authority accusing him now of treachery.

Proffi wonders on the subject of treachery, war, freedom, enemy (Sergeant Dunlop is the person who he befriends on the "enemy" side), but also on the usual subjects the boy of twelve could think about - women, friendship, his own future. His interpretations of the things he sees are often wrong, but his intuition is usually right. That is the source of his doubts and the reason for a lot of real philosophical, universal questions that are tackled in this compact novel. Proffi recalls the events as he remembers them, but it is obvious that he - unconsciously- learns a lot during that summer (pay attention to the words of Yardena, which he completely misunderstands at the time!).

"Panther in the Basement" talks about the basic, human feelings and deals with issues everyone wonders about, however its setting in Israel at the historically crucial point is essential.

Amos Oz is one of the writers who possess the ability of talking without unnecessary embellishments about important matters and do not repeat themselves or autoplagiarize.
His books stay with the reader for a long time and I have a feeling that they are timeless and will be read for years to come.

3 out of 5 stars Deeply flawed but valuable and vivid.......2005-09-16

This short novel (novella) well illustrates Oz's strengths and foibles as a writer of extended fiction. The portraits are vivid, as are the individual scenes. But as a whole this novel fails because it fails in the basic element of fiction--plot. Rather, it is successful in and useful for its encapsulations of prejudices at war with the kinder aspects of our common humanity. Valuable for its portraits, warts and all, of a strategic constituency. The thesis of the novel is not proven, but the depictions are vivid. And the setting, of eminent importance.

4 out of 5 stars "Anyone branded a traitor is a traitor forever".......2004-12-30

The state of Israel created in 1948 has given birth to new warriors, to young men and women who refuse to entertain the annihilation suffered by their relatives led to slaughter. The land is in flux, anxiously preparing for the end of the British Occupation.

Proffi lives in a time of epiphany, the fears and caution of his childhood soon to turn into self-reliance and pride. Proffi's summer is pivotal, the simplicity of childhood but a chapter in his life, a boy who already registers the nuances, the many facets of human behavior, even in the British occupiers.

Surrounded by history, Proffi lives in an environment that venerates the written word, the accumulation of knowledge; his father's bookshelves reach to the ceiling, smelling of must and old paper, a most heady perfume. A solitary child, Proffi daily recreates great military battles, using whatever is handy to plan each new siege once his parents have left for the day. And every day, an hour later, Proffi's two friends, Ben Hur and Chita Reznik arrive to assist in strategizing campaigns and plan forays aimed at the British Occupation, the boys members of a secret organization, FOD, Freedom or Death.

Life is good, Proffi's world defined by sundry battles and a newly awakened curiosity about the female sex, until he discovers an accusation painted on the wall: traitor. Required to appear before the FOD the next afternoon, Proffi must answer the serious charge. "Instead of a panther in the basement, they saw me as a knife in the back." Indeed, the boy is guilty of fraternizing with the enemy, one hapless and friendly Sergeant Dunlop. Proffi and the soldier have been meeting at a local cafe, each learning the language of the other, a secret and innocent pleasure.

This is a coming-of-age story set in the fulcrum of history, as a young boy navigates the mysteries of life in a world defined by the Holocaust and the reverberations felt around the globe from that infamous event. Proffi is confronted with the challenges of friendship in a new context, one that requires a different perspective, leaving childhood behind and ushering in a future defined by personal choices and a new-found sense of self.

This small novel is a gem, the brilliant analysis of a pivotal moment in a boy's life caught on the cusp of past and future. The author's descriptions are lyrical and visual, both the emotional journey undertaken by Proffi, the familiarity of a home filled with row upon row of treasured books and a family who understands the impermanence of time. Life awaits, but childhood still beckons seductively. Luan Gaines/2004.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Cent.......2004-10-24

This book is hard to fully appreciate until you've read it several times. I read it in Hebrew, and I have to admit that Oz must be one of the greatest Israeli authors. The word play (I don't know how well it came out in the English translation), childish and powerfully metaphoric all at once, of a boy growing up in a developing Jerusalem, with his internal struggles reflected in the entire Jewish history, forms one of the most poignant books I have ever read.
On a personal note, I grew up in a Jerusalem of the 1980s, a city full of life, completely developed, with cultural centers, theaters, malls, parks, opera houses, etc. Reading this book has made me truly conscious of and made me truly appreciate the immense amount of change and progress Jerusalem has gone through in the past few decades.
Also recommended - A Tale of Love and Darkness, although I don't know how it came out in the English translation.

5 out of 5 stars A "Word-child" in Extraordinary Times.......2004-10-07

Twelve-year old Proffy is in many ways an average preteen boy: he is confused and ashamed of his new attraction to girls; he and his friends conspire against their enemies; he is just beginning to be aware that his parents have a life beyond him. However, Proffy, nicknamed for his professorial tendencies, lives in extraordinary circumstances. He is a Jew in 1947 British-occupied Palestine, and his parents work for the Underground while holding more official jobs, leaving Proffy at home alone for hours while school is out. His grandparents, aunts, and uncles perished in the Holocaust, leaving Proffy and his parents as a small, close-knit, quasi-militant family at the mercy of curfews and unannounced searches of their home. When an awkward, shy British officer befriends Proffy, exchanging lessons in English for lessons in Hebrew, Proffy is accused by his friends of being a "low-down traitor." Proffy cannot deny his odd fondness for Sergeant Dunlop, and their almost-secret relationship opens questions about loyalty, racism, oppression, friendship, and the creation of a Jewish state.

Told through the first-person narration of Proffy as an adult, this slim novel melds adult insight with preteen earnestness. In precise, often beautiful language, Amos Oz builds his novel through scenes that superficially seem unrelated but which, when combined, have real emotional force. The inclusion of wordplay, seeming non sequiturs, and historical references add richness to this coming-of-age story. Although at times the repetition of Proffy's image of himself as a "panther in the basement" (from a Tyrone Power movie) seems heavy-handed, Oz has a light touch elsewhere as Proffy debates serious issues. The author's evocation of the times leading up to the official creation of modern Israel is brilliantly realized on a personal level through Proffy's intelligent but sometimes bewildered perspective.

Despite the age of the protagonist, this is not a children's book, although readers as young as fourteen should be able to read and enjoy it. I highly recommend this novel to readers of literary fiction and to those interested in the politics and history leading up to establishment of a modern Jewish homeland.

5 out of 5 stars "A panther in the basement, seething with oaths and vows.".......2005-09-20

Seeing himself as a "panther in the basement," much like Tyrone Power in a favorite old film, Proffi, the 12-year-old son of activist parents in Jerusalem in 1947, is a member of an "underground cell" which he and two friends have formed. Their objective, like that of their parents, is the ouster of the British, who have been mandated by the UN to set up a Jewish homeland. Though the children enjoy "spying" and see themselves as glorious heroes, their plans of attack are distinctly childish.

When Proffi finds himself drawn to Sgt. Stephen Dunlop, a gentle, shy British soldier from Canterbury, who wants to learn Hebrew and to teach Proffi English, Proffi justifies this friendship as his chance to probe for information for his own "secret DOD agency." Declared by his friends Ben Hur and Chita Reznik to be a "lowdown traitor" when this relationship is discovered, Proffi feels isolated, at a crossroads in his life.

Jerusalem is under constant curfews, the British are searching houses for weapons, his parents are involved in an underground movement, and he himself is beginning to become interested in girls--at least in Yardena, the nineteen-year-old sister of Ben Hur. As we come to know her, the people of the neighborhood, and the people important to Proffi, such as Mr. Gihon, his teacher, we see Proffi's knowledge and insights to be those of a twelve-year-old child whose belief in a bright future is absolute.

The powerful, often poetic language of this coming-of-age novel, along with its lively humor and warm understanding of human nature, make this an unforgettable novel of great universality. Told by an adult narrator who accurately captures Proffi's youthful viewpoint, the novel paints a picture of a loving, scholarly family seeking peace and knowledge, even as they actively try to expel "perfidious Albion." As we watch their interchanges with each other, with Proffi, and with British soldiers, we see them as decent people who want to be left in peace in a homeland of their own, to recover from the traumas of the Holocaust.

Filled with gorgeous sense impressions and images (the description of the father's library is stunning), the novel draws in the reader with its contagious warmth and good humor. Written by one of Israel's most highly regarded novelists, this short novel is an eloquent and elegant testament to enduring values. Mary Whipple

So refreshing - an author who puts marriage before sex!
Despite the strange way of meeting each other, Lottie O'Malley and John Tillman struggle to meets the needs of the children and find ultimate happiness.

James's gruff, grieving younger brother, John was no match for orphan raised 19 year old Lottie. Even though he didn't know what hit him, John was witness to the tender, sympathetic manner Lottie displayed to James's raggamuffin youngsters, little Sissy and 7 year old Thomas.

Lottie made instant connection with the youngsters who had been very politely raise and they endeared themselves and crept into Lottie's heart.

Although Lottie felt grievously put upon, with the preacher doing a disappearing act upon her arrival, and John still enamoured with his vague dreams of Sarah, James's wife, now dead 6 months, they would marry to care for the children. Best decision they ever made.

We soon learn of the ill-fated romance of Genevieve, the store keepers beautiful daughter and Reverand Stephen Bush. Probably his reason for disappearing.

And then Sarah's parents appear, wanting to take the children back to St. Louis with them. Oh, what heartache! I had to grin as I found out that the children politely ran off. Ah, but what suffering Lottie went through with her accident.

But Love was the great result. Lottie learned to accept help and John learned the depth of love and they fast formed a family.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED with no quams - heartwarming and full of love and commitment

Homespun Bride is about a young woman, Lottie O'Malley, who was raised in an orphanage. She comes west to Mill Creek, Missouri as a "mail-order bride" with two offers of marriage: one from the local parson and a back up offer from a local widowed farmer, James Tillman. When she arrives in Missouri she is told that the parson is "out of town" so some kind soul takes her to James Tillman's farm. Upon arriving at the farm, she learns he has just been killed in a farm accident. At the farm, needing care and love, are James's two adorable young children, Thomas and Sissy. James's grieving younger brother, John Tillman, is glad to have Lottie's help in caring for the children. As with all of Miss Davidson's books that I've read so far, the couple marries early in the book and disover the joy of love *after* the wedding. John and Lottie are both quick-witted and Miss Davidson spins a delightful tale of pioneer life with multi-faceted characters that are a joy to get to know. Lottie and I both fell in love with John, Thomas, and Sissy and you will too!

4 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Twist on the Traditional Episode Guide.......2005-09-30

I found it interesting that some people have complained that this book tries to explain inconsistencies in continuity over the many seasons of Doctor Who rather than serving as a more traditional episode guide. With respect to those reviewers, explaining these inconsistencies is pretty much the whole point of the book.

There are numerous episode guides to Dr. Who available (both in print and online). What makes this one different is its attitude (irreverent yet loving) and its execution (creative answers to questions like, how is it that the 2nd Doctor knows about things that happened after his trial by the Time Lords).

At times, this retroactive continuity fest gets a little outrageous (1993's Dimensions in Time), and it is disappointing that the 1996 Paul McGann film wasn't included in this re-issue. Still, this is the book that made me want to revisit, re-evaluate and ultimately better enjoy a number of Who stories. I think most who read with that mindset will have a similarly positive feeling about it.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the unitiated.......2005-05-31

The book is a lot of fun to read. Knowing what it takes to put a TV show together, getting to see all of the little mistakes and to have curious bits pointed out that only a fan would see is great. I've not been a fan of Doctor Who in the past but I've been watching the new series, which is excellent. It is also in keeping with the Doctor's well-storied past, at least based on the little I've seen of previous Doctors.

But you really have to know much more about the episodes to get the full value out of this book. Many of the episodes are lost or simply not yet available. This is sad, because as low-tech and dated as those shows probably were (are), they presented some great adventures. This book will not really fill you in on all of that, though.

The authors needed to do a few things to make this book work for everyone. With their wealth of knowledge it would have taken little time for them and little space in the book. Here's what is (crucially) missing:

                  1. Short episode synopses. While you can gleen the general story from the comments made, a clear recitation of the storyline would have been very helpful.

                  2. Profiles. It would have been nice to have profiles on the main characters - the Doctor and his companions. Maybe a page on how each Doctor was played, some interesting bits about their tenure, etc. As there were only 7 Doctors covered in this book (and why not the eighth Doctor? The Fox movie - considered part of the canon by many - was made many years ago. For the new edition they could have added a few pages) you wouldn't take up a lot of space giving this very important information. Also, paragraphs on each of the companions would have been nice. We're given some nice profile-style info on the Daleks, etc. But it's sprinkled about and difficult to find.

                  3. Comings and Goings. Doctor Who is about change. It would be nice to have a clear understanding of when someone new came on or someone old left. "This was X's last episode." Very easy to do.

                  4. An Index. Would have been nice to jump around and compare and contrast, say, all the Dalek information.

                  5. A history of Gallifrey and the Time Lords. As this is a central part of Doctor Who, understanding them and how they fit into the series would have been wonderfully helpful. We're given about a page and a half, and maybe that's enough for some people. For a show that was on the air for nearly 3 decades, I think those subjects deserve to have those entrees expanded.

Still, I have enjoyed this book fairly much. I'll be getting another book with, probably, more stogy information, but hopefully with greater detail.

5 out of 5 stars Tons of information about Doctor Who........2005-03-28

This book is great, full of goofs, interesting dialogue, the roots (sources) of many of the stories, fashions, screw ups and lots of humor. But while the book examines each and every episode it does not tell you what happened within the episode. In other words, it tells you how something does not make sense without telling you WHY it didn't make sense. UNLESS you have ALREADY seen the episode. In other words, if you are a fan, this is the book for you. But if you are new to Doctor Who? this won't make sense. In other words there is no summary of any of the plots.
So, for a fan, it is five stars. For a person new to the show, it is worthless untill AFTER they watch a few episodes.
                  ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Won't Watch Doctor Who Without It!!!.......2005-01-10

Since receiving this book, I can't watch a Doctor Who episode without it. I don't know how the authors could analyze and link all the episodes together, but they did. I love to read the fluffs and goofs sections before watching an episode to spot the same bloopers. The book has a rather curious habit of taking any line with "end" or "take it" or other such language and turning it into something sexual. This may be a result of watching too many episodes and trying to insert humor into a book that has more of a reference quality. My copy is well worn and I also use it to see which episodes I am missing when searching to buy videos. If you don't have this book- get it!!!

                  Book Description

The literature of prayer has an old and rich tradition, but Donald Spoto's extraordinary new work of scholarship and devotion may be the first book to explore not only what prayer says about God but what it reveals about us and the universal experiences that have moved us to call on God throughout the ages.

Drawing on the words of religious thinkers of both East and West, from the author of Psalms to Rumi and from Teresa of Ávila to Chögyam Trungpa, In Silence explores the nature, quality, history, and effects of prayer: as petition, as forgiveness, as cry of suffering, as abandonment, as serenity, as loving, as silence.

Erudite, beautifully written, and filled with wonder, this is a ringing celebration of our most precious habit of being.

I read this book as a companion book to Desert Father, by James Coman as a mans to experience prayer -- and God -- in different ways. Thus for me, i read this book as much as "how" we pray as "why" we pray. This book was a joy and I even used it as the basis for a Lenten prayer series at my church.

Spoto covers prayer as dialogue, petition, forgiveness, suffering, abandonment, serenity, loving, transformation and silence. By using examples from Christianity, as well as Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and other faith traditions, Spoto provides deep insight into the power of prayer as connection to an amazing, complex, bountiful and loving God.
