Book Description

At the annual May Ball, a jubilant celebration marking the end of examinations at Cambridge, private investigator Laura Principal is hired to provide security. Then, somewhere between the dancing and the fireworks, a student disappears.

Katie Arkwright wore white, a vision of purity. But when Laura starts probing into the missing woman's life, she finds that Katie concealed a dark side. The deeper Laura searches into a tangled past, the more tension mounts in every corner of Cambridge--where someone waits, coiled to strike. And strike again.

1 out of 5 stars YAWN.......2006-02-15

Poorly written, boring - I got to about page 30 and gave up. Too many GOOD books, too little time. Someone PLEASE tell me how this boring piece of tripe got published?

2 out of 5 stars Not Great.......2004-12-13

I'm not much of a mystery, but was taking a class on the mystery novel at school and this was one of the books assigned. Maybe it's me, but it's always seemed to me that the detective should be responsible for the resolution of the case. Not here. Everything turns out nicely without the detective actually having solved the case. Furthermore, Spring's prose didn't do much for me. Her paratactic sentences felt forced, rather than displaying natural speech rhythms.

Not a satisfying read at all.

1 out of 5 stars Boring and unbelievable.......2002-04-22

Many mysteries depend to a certain extent on coincidence, but this one seems to do so because it's too lazy to do anything else. There is little tension, little excitement, little reason to care about any of the people in the book. The main character muses on this and that as she makes her way around Cambridge, but her observations seem shallow and obvious. The one piece of real history that is discussed touches tangentially on the plot but without adding any depth. Motivations for various actions are plopped onto the page, stirred for a bit, and then left half baked.

Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Very good..........2001-08-15

This is the first book I have read by Michelle Spring. She is an extremely good writer, but she still needs to learn some more skills. This book is about a girl who is missing, and I was expecting a certain kind of writing and cocnclusion, and it did not happen the way I thought it would. The girl who was missing was...and I don't appreciate that kind of ending for a mystery book. I was blown away by the murderer and other non-suspect who did it-incredible! I have to congratulate her on that!!! Any way, not the way I expected it to turn out, but it was a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best new writers.......2000-07-21

This is another fine novel--well-written, compassionate, and intelligent--from one of the best of the new writers. Spring's characters and situations are complex, and the action typically has a reality (not to be confused with toughness) missing from many mystery novels.

I am dismayed and bewildered by the negative comments from the New England reader who apparently wanted Spring to have written another book, one with predictable feminist role models. One of Spring's strengths is the very lack of predictablity--her characters are as rich in detail and complex motivation as people we know.

I too heard Spring speak at PCA and I was impressed by the candor, intelligence, and passion of her remarks. She is a superb writer who lets us live a scene with her characters, and she thinks deeply about what she does with her books.

Starting with "Every Breath You Take" I have been hooked by Michelle Spring, and I can hardly wait for the next one.

5 out of 5 stars YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK!.......2007-06-08

I read the previous book "Satin dolls", and I absolutely loved it. When I logged onto Amazon book section, I saw "Satin Nights" available. This is the sequel to "Satin Dolls". I clicked to order right away. I read the book in two days. I couldn't put it down. Karen Q. Miller is a fabulous writer. I have read all of her works and I can't wait for the next book, "Passin" coming out Winter '08.

4 out of 5 stars I Love It.......2007-03-12

I LOVED SATIN DOLLS, AND SATIN NIHGTS. I READ SATIN DOLLS OVER AGAIN BECAUSE I READ IT A FEW YEARS AGO. SO WHEN I WAS FINSHED WITH SATIN DOLLS AND BEGAN READING SATIN NIGHTS IT WAS A GREAT READ. PUDDIN KEPT ME LAUGHING EVERY TIME SHE WAS IN THE STORY LINE, RAGINA WASN'T MY FAV THIS TIME AROUND. SHE WOULD PISS ME OFF EVERY TIME SHE WOULD LET LIL JOE TALK TO HER ANY KIND OF WAY. THATS WHAT MADE ME MAD ABOUT THE BOOK, BUT OTHER THAN THAT THE BOOK WAS GREAT AND I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN I WANTED TO KEEP READING IT ALL NIGHT.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-02-27

This book was captivating from the first chapter. It's the kind of book that you find hard to put down and always trying to find time to pick up. This book makes you take a look at your own friendships. These ladies had a bond that was unconditiional. It was a few years between "Satin Dolls" and this, but well worth the wait. Ms. Miller keeps you wanting more.

4 out of 5 stars For Good Times, For Bad Times, That's What Friends R 4!.......2007-02-12

Ms. Miller's has made an excellent comeback with the "Satin Nights" of the "Satin Dolls." Seemingly effortless, despite many years, she captures the essence of each of the friends and keeps you as enraptured with them as they have matured in the years, although one has never changed! Good time Sally (Puddin) is still chasing the rainbow whether it be drug induced or otherwise, Regina, the main character has finally made it and when her past resurfaces, the excitement challenges her to decide if maybe she's the same or has she really changed.

I love the loving camraderie between the four friends and they will have you laughing at their antics and gasping in dismay at their trials. But Ms. Miller manages to always let the genuine love and true meaning of friendship shine through from the beginning to the end!

Major kudo's to you Ms. Miller! I loved it!

4 out of 5 stars You can't always go back.......2007-02-10

SATIN NIGHTS the sequel to Satin Doll revisits the characters a few years after the first novel ended. The memorable characters from Ms. Miller's first novel are back and they are bringing the drama. Regina is now writing freelance articles and living with her daughter, but maintaining a friendly relationship with her ex-husband. Puddin' is still the foul mouth vixen with a heart and a fondness for recreational pharmaceuticals. Yvonne has reverted back to a relationship that almost harmed her years before. Tamika is in medical school and is trying to maintain the safety and love in her home with her husband and children. Regina's sister Brenda and niece Renee also make an appearance.

Regina seems to be doing well but a blast from the past has her remembering how life used to be when she was a teenager hustling to make a living. Little Joe, a man she once loved, is out of prison and Regina is hoping to recapture what was lost when Little Joe was sentenced. As they try to rekindle their relationship, the girls are all dealing with their own drama. Drug dealers are threatening Tamika and her family, Puddin's temper is still getting the best of her, Yvonne is living with a man with a drug addiction who has turned violent and Brenda is learning to love her daughter unconditionally. Will the four musketeers make it through the trials they are facing?

It was wonderful to return to characters whose lives were rough while growing up, but their future although not perfect, is a whole lot better. They are struggling in their relationships but they still remain steadfast friends. The characters are still unforgettable and Ms. Miller did a good job with the pacing, making this story a true page-turner. Although SATIN NIGHTS is the sequel to Satin Doll, there is enough background for it to stand alone, but to get a true understanding of all the character's pasts, reading Satin Doll would be helpful. Normally I am not a fan of sequels; however, this one exceeded my expectations. For quick and entertaining reading, SATIN NIGHTS delivers.

5 out of 5 stars Clever Blend of Intense Sensuality and the Paranormal.......2007-08-12

BUT..not in the all too typical way we are used to from reading most of this genre's books. Although the book incorporates time travel it uses it in an original method that essentially solves some of the problems associated with that trick. The alpha male lead is, of course, delectible but not predictible keeping us all guessing more than halfway through the book. The secondary characters from a witchy cat to ancient ancesters all add to the concoction of sensuality and the paranormal making this a newish, fun read for adults. This new author is worth watching for her next efforts!

4 out of 5 stars enticing erotic romance .......2007-07-06

Sarah Ryan is in Venice enjoying the Carnivale when she meets Marco at an exclusive party. They are attracted to one another and he invites her to be his guest at a midnight masquerade ball. She knows better than to run off with a stranger, but she cannot help but accept his sensual invitation to come with him.

Marco takes her to a realm where dark fantasies can occur. He begins to awaken desires she always craved but feared attaining and soon he rouses her essence to yearnings she consciously never knew she craved. As the night of pleasure continues in the pleasure realm, Marco makes Sarah hunger for even more than one evening of her sexual fantasies being fulfilled. She yearns for more exquisite time with him in the pleasure realm.

This enticing erotic romance will hook you from the onset when the mysterious Marco (no surname) whispers to an enthralled Sarah, "Come with me". Readers will think of mom's adage to never talk to strangers let alone leave for an evening of sexual fantasy with them, but also realize how impossible to refuse his sexual lure. The lead couple (and Venice as the setting) makes for quite a Carnivale tryst.

Fate lands Rebecca Sanderson in Jonathan Dillon's hands. She's just the bait he needs to retrieve his kidnapped sister from Rebecca's uncle, the good Reverend Bowles. But love soon foils his plans and now Jonathan must find a way to save both women...before Rebecca discovers his initial intent wasn't romance, but to use her as bartered goods.

              Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars slow boat to China.......2002-12-23

Here's how the story starts out:

Rebecca Sanderson's parents try to force her to marry the man of their chosing and, as punishment for refusing, are sending her to meet her missionary aunt in China. She decides to escape and runs into a cab and meets Captain Jonathan Dillon. Jonathan convinces Rebecca to go along with the trip to China --- all the better to escape in a foreign country, my dear --- and while they are attracted to each other, they decide to forget all about their meeting since they have other priorities.

Jonathan is trying to track down his missing sister. He's afraid she's been sold into slavery in China, so that's where his ship is headed. Guess who is travelling on board his ship? Yup, the girl he couldn't forget is now in close proximity for an extended length of time. Better yet, he discovers that her uncle is the man who has tricked his sister and has sold her into slavery. This is the excuse he needs to forget his conscience and get what he wants from Rebecca. He needn't work too hard, though, Rebecca has decided to forget her old way of life and seize the day --- and a lover --- before going on to a life of work and independence.

Despite a lot of twists and turns in the plot --- interference/ trouble from her family and his friends and family --- I'm sorry to say it just didn't capture my attention. While it should have been exciting, all the extraneous characters and plotlines just seemed to distract from the romance and the development of their relationship. Speaking of their relationship, things with Jonathan and Rebecca were going so fast, they didn't really seem to need a relationship or romance.

Finally, around 2/3 of the way into the book, I just couldn't get through to finish it so, in all honesty, perhaps it gets better at the end but I just never got there.

5 out of 5 stars An Exciting and Compelling Read.......2002-11-16

SILK DREAMS & SATIN LIES carries you from London in the 1870s to China in a story filled with rich characterizations and stunning settings. The sorrows and triumphs of Rebecca and Jonathan, and the people surrounding them, draw the reader into a richly textured world of betrayals, truth, and a love that surmounts all obstacles.

Catherine Snodgrass is a gifted writer. Her book kept me turning pages to see what would happen next. A true "keeper."

              2 out of 5 stars So-so romantic anthology (2 1/2 stars)..........2004-06-04

I picked up this romantic anthology last summer on a whim. I'd decided not to review it when I realized that these stories were reprints and had been around for a long time. I was cleaning up my library, ready to give some books away to friends, when I came about Under His Skin again. Despite the mediocrity of this anthology, I somewhat enjoyed Lori Foster's Outrageous. It is the story of a young woman's quest to find the person who had sold a gun that had backfired and almost killed her brother. But in doing so she almost blows Judd Sander's cover. He, too, is searching for the person selling illegal weapons. He reluctantly accepts to help Emily. However, it won't be easy keeping his hands off the beautiful woman. The other two novellas -- Carla Neggers's Bewitching and Linda Lael Miller's Snowflakes on the Sea -- were ho hum at best. I didn't even bother to finish reading Snowflakes.

All in all, this is a mediocre anthology. Harlequin should have reprinted stronger novellas. Lori Foster is one of the best soft romantica writers of this time. I enjoyed Outrageous, even though the aforementioned novella isn't one of Foster's best efforts (this is one of her early works). If you're looking for soft romantica to read on the beach, I'd advise you to check out the Kensington Brava novels and anthologies instead. This one just isn't good enough...

3 out of 5 stars Taking the good with the bad........2004-04-09

This reprint of 3 stories is redeemed by the inclusion of "Outrageous" by Lori Foster (pub. 1997) and also by the originally-written novella "Bewitching" by Carla Neggers (pub. 1993).

Unfortunately, the sad, sorry mess of Linda Lael Miller's "Snowflakes on the Sea" (pub. 1984) might be enough to put some readers off if they take the first story in the book as an indication of the quality of the latter two. Miller's story is a disjointed story with the protagonists repeating the same patterns again and again. Miller's female lead character Mallory is a sap - I found little to sympathize or empathize with in Mallory. The story wanders around until it just seems to finally come to a conclusion just to bring things to an end, and an unsatisfying end, at that.

That said, I would recommend this book for Foster's (always a treat) and Negger's novellas, however overall I can only give this book 3 stars because of the amount of paper wasted by "Snoflakes on the Sea", the longest novella in this collection.

UNDER HIS SKIN . . . How does an indecent proposal fit into a simple business plan? Anthony DiLeo is about to find out. When he approaches Tess Hardaway with an idea to benefit both their companies, she counters with an unexpected—and thoroughly steamy—suggestion. A proposition that involves the two of them getting to know each other in the most intimate way!

              Customer Reviews:

              4 out of 5 stars A Fun Fast-Paced Read!.......2005-06-04

Ms. London has done a fine job creating some fun characters that will entertain the reader during the duration of this read. Although this is not a new storyline Tess and Anthony are fun and irresistable characters that manage to take a hold of the story and tell it in their own way.
Tess is a no nonsense woman that knows her way around a race track or boardroom. She is in New Orleans for a convention and than road race when she is approached by Anthony DiLeo. Anthony is talk blonde and yummy. He also beats her racing! But she has more worries than that. Someone has been sending nasty letters to her father and her father is just a tad protective. Tess wants freedom so she asks Anthony to ride shotgun. Will the wide open road lead to more than a win for Tess?

Anthony wants to talk to Tess. He has a business propostion and he will do whatever it takes to get the sassy, sexy lady to listen to me. He'll even take to the road with her. But to be honest it's no hardship and if he has anything to do with it it will be a win win situation for the both of them. Of course it won't be easy. Tess is strong and he will be willing to do what he must...even stand back in order for him to win the one prize he must have...Tess!

Tess and Anthony are fun and realistic characters. Tess is not a milk and water miss but rather a woman that knows her own mind. Anthony on the other hand is strong enough to step back and let his lady shine. The storyline although not new is made fresh by the characters. This is one quick read that will leave you vastly entertained.

David Hartwell's guiding principle for his annual science fiction anthologies is that the stories be clearly science fiction--not fantasy, horror, or postmodern. As always, for the 2001 edition he has chosen stories representing the best of the SF field, along with several short pieces published in Nature magazine as part of a millennium celebration.

Don't miss Tananarive Due's "Patient Zero," which assumes Greg Egan's frequent spotlight on medical SF (this year Egan covers philosophy vs. science in his alternate history "Oracle"); Stephen Dedman's detective story about amputation, "The Devotee"; Stephen Baxter's hard SF "Sheena 5," which is about an enhanced squid and her mission; Ursula K. LeGuin's anthropological tale "The Birthday of the World"; or Nancy Kress's succinct, pithy "To Cuddle Amy."

2001 Hugo Award nominees include "Seventy-Two Letters" by Ted Chiang, "Oracle" by Greg Egan, and short story winner "Different Kinds of Darkness" by David Langford. --Bonnie Bouman

4 out of 5 stars Nice, thick volume featuring some pretty profound speculative stories!.......2006-07-07

I actually thought the last story was the best one of all. "72 Letters" is a provoking piece of steampunk/alternative history which turns biology on its ear and introduces God as a substrate of 19th century physics and engineering. By rights, "72 Letters" should be classified as Hard Fantasy, given its fantastical premise combined with a rigorous setting and well-thought-out exploration of the Golem myth. The subject of the story, far more than its characters, grew more fascinating with each page, and when I closed the back cover of the book I thought, wow, that was a hell of a way to end the volume! Terrific!

Other standout stories that I enjoyed were, "Patient Zero", "Different Kinds of Darkness", "The Birthday of the World", "Sheena 5", "Grandma's Jumpman", and "Built Upon the Sands of Time."

Both well-established and famous writers (such as Ursula K. Leguin) and relatively obscure names cohabitate between the covers of this book, and like others in the series, #6 offers a decent sampling of SF from all over the map: sociological, hard, bio/eco, dystopia, etc.

Note: not necessarily a great book for people new to the SF field, or who are seeking light fare. Several of the stories in this volume, like "Patient Zero", are downright depressing, and a story like "Reef" is so obviously on the cutting edge of hard SF, a reader more familiar with mainstream fiction or franchise SF material (Star Trek, Star Wars) might be offput.

                      4 out of 5 stars Great start.......2003-01-21

The art of the short story is disappearing. It is a joy when a compilation is released and it is very good. This is such a release. Are these the best of the Science Fiction genre for 1995? I don't know, but these stories are wonderfull. When I buy short story anthologies I tend to look for authors I have enjoyed over the years. The true gift is when I find an author I know nothing about or a new and rising author that is going to be fun to follow. This anthology has some of the big names such as Le Guin and Silverberg who both have written execellent stories. The true find for me was Nancy Kress. Her 'Evolution' is about a plague and the ramifications of genetic manipulation. Kress wrote 'An Alien light' in 1988 and I had lost track of her since. She is truly an amazing find. This book is well worth the time.

4 out of 5 stars A good start to a "Best of" series.......2002-07-11

When David Hartwell started his own annual series of the year's best SF with this volume in the mid nineties, the doorstopper series edited by Gardner Dozois had been running for over a decade. Hartwell made some passing references to other anthologies being unfocused but otherwise he avoided the issue and that begged the question of why this series started and should you buy it instead of or as well as the Dozois book?

On the strength of this, the first volume, I am happy to recommend Hartwell's choice to anyone who is into SF in the traditional sense. That does not mean that the contents are old fashioned just that the contents are certainly Science Fiction and not some related genre.

The fourteen stories here, all of which were written in 1995, include works by a selection of the best of contemporary SF authors. Writers like Silverberg, Baxter, Benford, Kress, Haldeman, Woolfe, Zelazny and Sheckley rarely disappoint though the last of those is represented here by one of his weaker recent works.

The highlights for me were Joe Haldeman's "For White Hill" and Robert Silverberg's "Hot Times in Magma City". The first is a tale of war, art, love and sacrifice set on a ruined Earth in the far future and the second is set in a near future LA beset by volcanic eruptions. The producers of "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak", a pair of similarly themed disaster movies should have studied Silverberg's tale to see how to inject some real humanity into the subject.

Like the Silverberg story, William Spencer's "Downloading Midnight", Gene Wolfe's "The Ziggurat" and "Evolution" by Nancy Kress are all set on a contemporary or near future Earth and all three are compelling and rewarding stories.

Stephen Baxter's "Gossamer" and Gregory Benford's "A Worm in the Well" demonstrate that the traditional setting of space travel in the Solar System can still give rise to highly enjoyable and original ideas that bring "golden age" styles right up to date.

This is not a perfect book, there are still a couple of stories here that left me wondering what the editor was thinking (or smoking) when he included them but on the whole, the book stands as justification for the fact that there is certainly room for another "years's best" series. If you buy Gardner Dozois' books, you should give this volume a go as well.

4 out of 5 stars An extraordinary anthology.......2001-11-08

This strong anthology proves that there is room in the science fiction market for two Year's Best anthologies. I was slightly surprised by this anthology because I have been underwhelmed by previous editions.

This year was a different story. I enjoyed nearly every offering in the book. I was particularly impressed with the stories that Mr. Hartwell culled from unusual sources. Robert Silverberg's 'The Millennial Express' from Playboy magazine was particularly impressive. Robert Reed's story 'Grandma's Jumpman' from Century magazine was above average. I enjoyed the 5 or 6 1-2 page stories from Nature magazine. The stories from David Brin and Dan Simmons stood out from the rest.

The anthology also included excellent stories from Howard Waldrop (an amusement-park attraction attains sentience and rebels against its masters) and Ted Chiang (an alternate reality story where Jewish kabbalistic tradition is real and powerful). Brian Stableford's fascinating 'The Last Supper' continues the author's recent exploration of the future of genetics.

Not to be overlooked are two award-winning stories, Ursula Le Guin's excellent 'The Birthday of the World' and David Langford's 'Different Kinds of Darkness'. I thoroughly enjoyed this anthology. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars 2001 edition not up to par.......2001-08-10

This book didn't quite do it for me, I'm afraid. The main problem with the book was the overabundance of two-page short shorts (most culled from Nature). These things are worth reading, I suppose, and they're not as bad as Analog's Probability Zero pieces, but do they really belong in a Year's Best anthology? Ford's "In the Days of the Comet" and Kress's "To Cuddle Amy" could have been worthy of an inclusion here, had they been fleshed out a little more. With the advent of Internet -only fiction, short-shorts have become more and more popular as e-zines attempt to appeal to the average short-attention-span Web surfer. Call me old-fashioned, but I'll take a big fat novella any day.

Well-written, concise, and most importantly, rings with the Spirit of Truth. Questions and doubts that have bugged me for years--and kept me immobilized--have been answered by John Mason's teaching of Scripture. Simply a great book. Holy Spirit inspired. I can't believe I haven't come across this man before. God bless him.

Most books of this caliber are fat little paperbacks with tiny print; this book was easily readable in a few hours of one day, and it gave me the most modivation ever. John Mason gives biblical examples, short personal examples, strong insparation, and invaluable advice for each nugget - each no longer than a page (front and back). After reading my friend's copy, I ordered my own and highlighted all the parts that gave special sparks in my soul. It's short, to the point, wonderfully put together, and makes you see many things inside yourself in many different lights. I recommend this for anyone who wants to brighten their lives and get into positive thinking =D

A close friend recommended this book to me. I ordered it thinking it would be a book to just skim and think about. It is far more than that. The book is laid out in nice, easy to digest nuggets with scripture references. Mr. Mason's emphasis on God's will for us to be unique is a nice touch. Overall, anyone who has ever wrestled with low self-esteem, lack of confidence or faith, will benefit greatly from the book.

                          Book Description

Best-selling author John Mason again launches an all-out attack on mediocrity with this sequel to his phenomenally popular book An Enemy Called Average. Divided into 52 "nuggets" of truth, Conquering An Enemy Called Average is a source of godly wisdom, scriptural motivation and practical principles. The words of this book will break down the barriers to excellence in your life and release you to be all that God created you to be.

                          Think about it…
Imitation is limitation. Procrastination is the fertilizer that makes difficulties grow. Living a double life will get you nowhere twice as fast. If you chase two rabbits, both will escape. Adversity has advantages. Know your limits, then ignore them. The only place to start is where you are. There is no future in the past. Do what people say cannot be done.

"Take the lid off" of an average lifestyle and live a life of excellence today!

4 out of 5 stars Pithy but Powerful.......2007-08-29

Each of 52 nuggets is really just a collection of sayings that are not particularly tied together well. However, there are some great quotes in here - the kind you wish you could remember and easily spout at the perfect moment. After reading the book through in a matter of days, I think I will reread one chapter a week, as the book recommends. I could see this being something I reread year after year.

John Mason has really outdone himself this time. His books just keep getting better and better. I definitely recommend this book as well as the others he has written. I have them all and am anticipating the arrival every new one in the future!
