Book Description

One of the great mavericks of French literature, Georges Bernanos combined raw realism with a spiritual focus of visionary intensity. Mouchette stands with his celebrated Diary of a Country Priest as the perfection of his singular art.

"Nothing but a little savage" is how the village school-teacher describes fourteen-year-old Mouchette, and that view is echoed by every right-thinking local citizen. Mouchette herself doesn't bother to contradict it; ragged, foulmouthed, dirt-poor, a born liar and loser, she knows herself to be, in the words of the story, "alone, completely alone, against everyone." Hers is a tale of "tragic solitude" in which despair and salvation appear to be inextricably intertwined.

Bernanos uncompromising genius was a powerful inspiration to Flannery O'Connor, and Mouchette was the source of a celebrated movie by Robert Bresson.

4 out of 5 stars Mouchette - Inside/out.......2007-08-28

Many years ago it was required of English Liturature students to study "the stram of consciousness" method in writing, and Virginia Woolfe's To the Lighthouse was the set text. Perhaps that method of writing has now slid into the far recesses of memory and popularity which might help those reading Georges Bernanos to remember. It seemds to me that unless one gets back into this mode Mouchette - and Monsieur Ouine Monsieur Ouine - will puzzle many readers. We are asked to live in Mouchette's mind as it looks out on a short sequence of time. It is easy to get lost, no less than Mouchette is lost and confused. And it is hard anyway as there seems to be "hole" in the sequence between the events of that night and when Mouchette sets off for the village in the morning. Again, the last paragraph of the book seems to betray the promise of the book; it seems to leave too much to the imagination of the reader and too little to the consciousness of Mouchette: flat like the pond into which she sinks. Never-the-less, a beautiful story well, and chillingly, told.

3 out of 5 stars Minor Bernanos.......2006-11-26

This short novel allegedly combines "raw realism with a spiritual focus of visionary intensity." The raw realism, to be sure, is everywhere evident during this tale of a French countryside teenager and outcast who experiences rape, despair, and finally suicide. The strength of the piece lies, I'd argue, in its wonderful concreteness: the sights, smells and tastes of Mouchette's world are all immaculately rendered. But I don't think that in clarity, coherence or proportion the author's "spiritual focus" is on a level with his writerly genius. Mouchette's story, in other words, is too long on lurid incident and too short on meaning. It's true in the last few pages the author declares that despite cryptic intrusions of grace Mouchette's life had largely been a "strange rebellion against tenderness which made her so solitary." Bernanos also briefly reflects here on the entrance of despair into the lives of poor people. But this, I think, is too little, too late to satisfactorily irradiate Mouchette's story with vision, much less with the capacity to move the reader profoundly.

I thought this book was rather interesting. The storyline was one that kept you guessing what really happened to Susan Trench. This was Hallie Knight's assignment. Hallie was called into play by Susan"s grandfather. After uncovering many family secrets--she solves the puzzle.

I MUST ADMIT A DISAPPOINTMENT IN THIS BOOK--THE STORY LINE WAS FAIR, BUT I FEEL AS IF WHITNEY WAS GRASPING, SO TO M SPEAK, AND THE WRITING STYLE LEFT ME COLD. AFTER HAVING READ SEVERAL OTHER WHITNEY WORKS, IT SEEMED TO ME THAT SHE WAS HAVING AN "OFF TIME" DURING THE WRITING OF THIS BOOK.

                    4 out of 5 stars I really liked it.......2001-06-28

I'm surprised that anyone was disappointed in it (other reviewers) because I enjoyed it. I will say it was not a typical Phyllis A. but a great read all the same.

4 out of 5 stars Not one of Phyllis whitney's better novels...........2001-05-12

But I enjoyed it just the same. As someone else mentioned, i too had problems with some of the dialogue that ran throughout the novel. It read like the characters were reciting from a travel brochure. However, the story itself was interesting to me and read like a typical Phyllis A Whitney novel.

AMETHYST DREAMS is about the mystery behind a missing person, Susan Trench. An old college friend of hers, Hallie Knight, is summoned by Susan's grandfather Nicholas Trench, to help figure out who killed Susan, and from there the novel begins. We learn about the people that meant most to Susan, and what Susan was all about. Who wanted her dead? And why?

Among the sub plots are Hallie's troubled marraige, Nicholas's relationships with his wife Anne, who was a famous artist now living on her own, and other various persons that lived on Top Sail Island and were somehow connected to Susan.

I wouldnt' recommend this as a first novel for those who haven't read other books by Phyllis A Whitney. but as a fan, I would definitely recommend it. Ms Whitney has always been able to create characters that I like, and I find myself wanting to read more simply because she knows how to tell a good story.

Esteemed Mars guru Bob Zubrin calls The Martian Race "one of the finest novels about human exploration of the Red Planet ever written. "But then again, Bob is a character in the book (albeit in the briefest of cameos), so what else could he possibly say? That notwithstanding, Zubrin's right--he couldn't have picked a better book to show his face in. By popular assent, Martian Race deserves top honors among the millennial wave of Mars exploration tales, propelled as it is by the skillful storytelling of physics doyen Gregory Benford, a Campbell and two-time Nebula winner.

Martian Race is near-future SF, set in the twenty-teens (just before Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars saga kicks off), which may contribute to its being a bit of a slow starter; this is realistic, nuts-and-bolts speculation on a mission using pretty basic technology. But the pace picks up considerably as our heroes--the likable Julia and her Russky hubby Viktor and crew, backed by the Mars Consortium and its biotech billionaire CEO John Axelrod--begin to duke it out with a Euro-Sino concern to claim the $30 billion Mars Prize and, of course, get back from the Red Planet in one piece. Benford's work throughout is engaging and thorough, exploring every aspect of why we should make this trip at all (and even a few arguments against it, like Mars Bar marketing tie-ins). --Paul Hughes

A novel that details the first trip to Mars by a manned crew. This is done as cheap and as feasibly as possible by an idealistic and enterprising rich guy, who realises that but cutting out some super keen safety margins and using osme existing stuff they can do it 'cheap', that being a relative term when you are talking about manned spaceflight. it also involves cramming in more advertising than a Formula One driver carries.

In THE MARTIAN RACE, Gregory Benford has created what is probably going to be the most realistic portrayal of our first manned expedition to Mars. The inevitable comparisons to Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy and Ben Bova's Mars and it's sequel are bound to follow. What Benford brings to this already thoroughly explored genre is a fresh, realistic and very scientifically accurate adventure that should please fans of hard SF everywhere.

The title of the novel originally derives from a competiton that is set up with a 30 Billion dollar prize to the first expedition that can reach Mars, extract new scientific information, and return to Earth successfully. The expedition is funded by billionaire John Axelrod who stretches his finances to the limit in pursuit of the 30 billion dollar prize and is as tight with his purse strings as any corporate CEO would be.

There were a number of aspects to this novel that set it apart and made it better than previous Mars novels-the main one being the depth of Benford's characters. Each one has their private motivations for being part of the crew and the changes and accomodations they have to go through including overcoming their own personal shortcomings made this novel very realistic.

The other strength of this novel lies in the manner in which Benford deals with all the side effects of a Mars expedition-the politics, the fringe groups, the media exploitation, etc. This book does not gloss over or candy coat any of the problems or opposition a scientific effort of this magnitude is going to encounter. Several critics of this novel have complained about the pacing, but again I belive this just adds to the realism of this novel. The actual journey to Mars is going to be a tedious one and the scientific research is going to be painstaking and is detailed very accurately by Benford.

With enough suprises and twists and turns and very powerful descriptions of the Martian landscape this is a solid page turner and one of Benford's very best efforts to date. If you want to read how our first expedition to Mars is likely to happen-then pick up a copy of the Martian Race-you won't be disappointed

5 out of 5 stars Mars the bold way !.......2007-01-11

This book is an outstanding account of a manned Mars mission the way it could occur in a very near future, less than fifteen years ... provided there is a political will and a willingness to take risks to explore new worlds, not just to circumnavigate the Earth. I enjoyed it very much. The scientific and technical sides are very accurate and based on the famous Mars Direct plan of visionary space engineer Robert Zubrin. I think this book serves as a reminder that the age of the great explorations of the past is not over, far from it. We can make it happen again, and even more exciting than it was a few centuries ago!

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps not fiction for too much longer ... we can but hope!.......2006-10-16

Congress just couldn't stomach NASA's estimated $450 billion price tag to send a manned mission to Mars. So the USA and a group of other interested countries agreed on a different approach - a $30 billion prize to the first people that went to Mars and returned with a completed set of specified scientific explorations including geologic mapping, seismic testing, studies of atmospheric phenomena, core samples and, of course, searches for water, fossils and life. This was obviously much more than a flash and grab mission in the style of the first moon landings where the objective was to basically plant the flag and return. The stakes were enormous but, of course, so were the risks and there didn't seem to be any takers until a private consortium headed by flashy billionaire entrepreneur, John Axelrod, took up the challenge. Julia and her husband, Victor, along with Marc and Raoul, a team of ex-NASAnauts, hired on as crew for the mission found themselves facing a similar operation from China that had also tossed their entry into the ring. "The Martian Race" was on in earnest.

Set only in the very early 21st century, the familiarity and apparent reality of Benford's novel is breathtaking - the politics and governmental interference; the buffoonery of political protests launched by any number of right and left wing fringe groups with a variety of axes to grind; the media coverage and the outpouring of world adulation for the team's "right stuff"; the real hard core valuable first time scientific research; the money-grubbing and the commercial offshoots of the entire venture; the legal squabbling over contracts and the prize money; the hard core mechanics of how the landing is achieved; the daily crises, dangers and emergencies; the psychology of extended living in confined quarters; the inevitable boondoggles associated with such a mammoth undertaking and much, much more. As Julia was conducting some analysis protocols on samples obtained in an out-gassing vent on Mars to determine whether they were organic in nature or, perhaps even more exciting, whether they constituted Martian life, dead or alive, the tension was palpable and I found myself turning pages at a frantic pace. Who would have thought it possible for an author to inject that much excitement into a laboratory experiment?

Benford's dialogue was consistently witty, credible and germane to every situation and sounded appropriate in the mouth of each speaker - business-like yet casually slick for the entrepreneur, Axelrod; earthy, warm and romantic for Julia and Viktor as lovers, yet curt and workmanlike in the context of their roles as scientists and astronauts. Descriptive moments (not something I'd look for in a sci-fi entry that was so obviously geared to the hard side of the genre!) were beautiful and approached poetic in their eloquence:

"A ruby radiance suffused the horizon and above it rose a lustrous blue-white dot. Earthrise. A resplendent smudge, brimming brighter than Venus. She peered closely and could make out the small white point to one side. The only primary-and-moon visible to the naked eye in the solar system. Until now, that tiny little interval had been the full extent of the human reach. On the bigger creamy-blue dot, a million years of hominid drama had been acted out, blood and dreams playing on a stage a few miles thick, under a blanket of forgiving air."

The climax ... an eloquent statement of Benford's clear hope that "The Martian Race", should it come to pass, would result in a new Martian race, as it were - one based in teamwork and cooperation and a new paradigm of exploration and cooperative problem-solving that has thus far eluded the best intentions of an earthbound mankind. Bravo, Gregory Benford! A magnificent tale!

                          5 out of 5 stars A Trivid Personality.......2006-08-02

The Martian Race (1999) is a SF novel about the race for the Mars Prize. When NASA submitted a budget of 450 billion dollars to go to Mars, Congress suffered from sticker shock and turned down the project. Instead, the United States and other Western countries offered a prize of 30 billion dollars for the first voyage that accomplished specified goals.

NASA continued to prepare for a voyage to Mars in 2016, but used the Mars Direct model instead of the previous boondoggle version. Step by step, NASA built and tested their equipment. They sent an Earth Return Vehicle to Mars to manufacture methane for the return voyage. But their launch of an orbital vehicle to test the centrifugal force idea was a spectacular failure, destroying the equipment and killing the crew. Congress canceled the NASA Mars program.

Still, a private Consortium was set up by billionaire John Axelrod to win the Mars Prize. The Consortium started hiring ex-NASA astronauts and buying surplus NASA equipment. But they downsized the mission to four astronauts instead of the previous six crewmembers.

In this novel, Julia, Viktor, Marc and Raoul survive the six month trip and aerobraking to land in Gusev crater. Shaped like a tuna can, the two-story habitat is a strange landing vehicle, but adequate living quarters. They have brought a pressurized rover, but also convert the two onsite vehicles to manual control.

Raoul spends most of his time repairing the ERV, which had landed with enough lateral vector to damage the engine pipes. The peroxide dust and the extreme changes in temperature at the surface have also damaged the ERV components. Although he is able to replace and refit many parts, Raoul doesn't have the tools to do as much as he wishes. The first test results in even more damage. He needs more tools; in fact, he really needs a replacement ERV.

The scientific program continues concurrently with the ERV repairs. Marc explores the surrounding terrain and sets off seismic charges to map the subsurface. They find evidence of surface water, underground caverns, and billion year old bacterial fossils.

As they approaching the end of their stay on the Red Planet, Julia and Viktor discover a venting sinkhole. When they approach it and prepare to descend, they find moisture and water ice. Julia gets a sample off the lip of the hole, but then Viktor slips on the ice and sprains his ankle; he has to be taken back to the hab immediately.

Julia checks her samples in the lab and finds organic residue. Although ruptured by the cold and lower pressure, this residue may have been cellular remains. Unfortunately, the men are focused on the ERV repairs and will not let her return to the vent for more exploration.

This novel depicts the political intrigues surrounding the first manned flight to Mars. Scientific research is peripheral to the political aspects. When Julia confirms the biological origins of her samples, she is told to keep silent about her discoveries.

Unfortunately, politics is the name of the game. Whether public or private, research is funded primarily for the political (and economic) returns. The whole space program is evidence of the political nature of such projects. Even a private venture will have to show a political reward of some nature, probably in entertainment and related products.

This work draws heavily on Heinlein's The Man Who Sold the Moon, which in turn was based on Amundsen's trek to the south pole. Of course, Amundsen did not have trivid, email, or direct broadcasts, but he did sell newspaper articles and stamps postmarked at (or near) the Pole. This book shows how the media could dominate private planetary exploration.

Highly recommended for Benford fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of planetary adventure.

Brennan recounts the old stories of ancient archaeology through most of this book. He sites a lot of bible quotes to reinforce his contention that we came from Mars but doesn't really give any hard evidence as to how this was possible. This book is basically a collection of other books that I have read that were more interesting. More for people who don't know too much about ancient archaeology and what to start out with the basics.

2 out of 5 stars Little connection between the title and what is delivered........2001-08-27

Although this book does present some intriquing archeological anomalies, and thought-provoking speculation, it fails to even come close to delivering the goods. The author revisits ground well-trodden ('face on Mars', ancient mysteries, mythology-as-fact), but offers nothing new. It is disjointed, and seems to have been put together hastily. Sub-par.

1 out of 5 stars Am I supposed to believe this?.......2001-08-07

How half of the archaeological sites mentioned in this book have anything to do with Mars is beyond me. If we came from Mars, then don't you think there'd be some kind of oral or written history about it? There's an oral history of Noah's flood, and of Jesus allegedly rising from the dead, but there's no mention of us coming to Earth from Mars. How could people forget such a momentous occasion?

The whole premise of this book is solely based on one picture. Overall this book sucks.

3 out of 5 stars Quick, compelling, well-researched.......2000-12-11

Brennan's book is far from the definitive book on possible extraterrestrial intervention in our species' history. But it's surprisingly cogent, fast reading that raises important questions without insulting the reader's intelligence. Brennan's thesis isn't developed into a working hypothesis; he leaves this thorny task for others to unravel. But the material here is certainly worth the few hours it takes to read "Martian Genesis."

                          4 out of 5 stars Interesting hypothesis.......2000-11-13

Mr. Brennan explores a vast amount of historical "anomalies" throughout his book, all of which, he believes, are clues to an ancient civilization that existed before modern history was believed to have started. According to modern consensus civilization began about 6,000 years ago in Sumer, however, Mr. Brennan challenges this idea and suggests that it was much earlier, around 35,000 or 65,000 years ago, and also that we possibly could've been transplanted from Mars. All in all the book is pretty good, plus there's pictures of the face on Mars.

As the CEO of a major training company, I read a lot of books to give me insight on how to add value to my clients.

This book is well written, draws you in like a novel or a movie, takes you on a rollercoaster ride and in the end leaves you feeling wonderful about yourself and appreciating your blessings.

It certainly takes away all excuses and gives you hope that anything is possible if you believe in yourself, your family, your friends, your community but most importantly if you believe in GOD.

5 out of 5 stars A Story Of Courage And Faith.......2005-02-01

I was so blessed by the Author's honesty and transparency in sharing her story. Natalie takes the reader on a tremendous journey of her life as she unfolds her story of betrayal, pain and heartache. The seemingly insurmountable trials and tests that she has faced have obviously been the catalyst for God's hand of protection, providence and healing in her life. She is such a courageous and beautiful woman and her story will inspire and encourage you in your faith and walk with God. This book was an incredible blessing to me!!

5 out of 5 stars The Previous Review.......2005-02-01

The previous review from "Savanah Writes "Jennifer" appears to be written, not by someone who has read the book, but rather by someone who has a grudge against the author. If you take the time to read the book, you will see the grief that the author suffered from her in-laws... especially from their support of her husband's girl-friends (even taking the girl friend to meet with Victor in prison). Undoubtedly one of them is the author of this "so-called" review. I hope this will only encourage more people to read "No More Than I Can Bear" as it is truly a God honoring and honest work.
