To God be the glory........2003-09-14
(Mocha love - a love of a superior quality-strong, rich in flavor and infused wih passion that could only come from a masculine Chocolate-flavored Black man who has his act together.)
This explicit definition sat me up for a steamy novel, and in a sense that's what this is. But the steam that rises in powerful bursts is from the deep 'inner-most' thoughts of men who have come full circle with who they are. James Guitard, has taken familiar topics: Love, Passion, Deceit, Honesty and Power, and has written inspirational stories from the soul of men who are not afraid to show penitence and reverence to God. Men who are not afraid to expound on the significant decisions made, concerning the sanctity of marriage, the power of forgiveness, the rewards gained from abstinence and the dislocation of self worth because of infidelity and promiscuity.
MOCHA LOVE is saturated with rich emotions that stimulate and inspire. The ultimate message from these stirring words is that resolute faith will keep people in step with God's plan. This is an innovative, convicting and magnetic book. This is one to read; it will relate to your aesthetic senses.

Praising GOD through All things.......2003-03-13
Mr. Guitard has given us a spiritual love story. He let's us know that all people can have a relationship with GOD despite our past and present situation. His use of the stories as a lead for scripture is beautiful. Guitard is not preachy but straightforward with THE WORD. This book is a love story with Christ and how we get there(via people or situations). I was moved by the first story, "LOVE." In "HONESTY" he brings all the characters together to show that all of GOD's children will meet I some place and time in their lives. I look forward to more from this talented and annointed writer. MOCHALOVE is invitation to CHRIST

Lots of sex, but not much real romance in this romance novel.......2006-11-26
From the back cover:
A frosty wedding...
Lady Fiona Hollingsworth never things of herself as particularly daring--until she learns that her beloved brother needs her help. But when Fiona approaches the powerful and enigmatic Nicholas Birmingham with a scheme in mind, she is taking a far bigger risk than she knows. For Fiona's exchanging more than vows; she striking a delicious bargain with the devil himself--and Christmas provides more than enough opportunity for wicked mischief under the mistletoe...
A fiery passion...
Nicholas Birmingham hasn't become the richest stockbroker in England by being anything less than shrewd. He fully understands what's behind Fiona's brazen proposal, yet he cannot turn away from the alluring lady who's haunted his fantasies for so long. Of course, a man has his pride, and Nicholas has no intention of revealing how he feels. Yet from the moment he slips his ring on Fiona's finger, desire and chaos are kindled. Now it's only a matter of time before the magic of the Season brings true love to light!
And my review:
I bought this book because it's a Christmas romance, and I'm a sucker for those. The fact that it's a Regency only sweetened the deal, as that's my favorite time period.
My problem with this book was that the felt there was nothing between the characters but hot sex. I've got nothing wrong with strong sexual attraction between the hero and heroine (in fact, it's necessary for a good romance), but I need more for the relationship to be satisfying than just an endless series of sex scenes. I felt like this couple did nothing but have sex all day long, day in and day out. That gets old fast.
Also, I didn't feel like a very deep character sketch was made of the heroine. I just never felt like I really knew her...she was just there. I didn't feel much for her, and I couldn't really make myself care what was happening to her. She just wasn't real for me. The hero's character was a little better, but not by much. Okay, so he's handsome as sin, honorable to a fault (he gets rid of his mistress before getting married because he refuses to break his wedding vows, which is exceedingly rare for a man of the time, and he takes care of his illegitimate child) and generous, but that was about it. Who was he really, as a person? I never felt like I found out.
Other reviewers have mentioned that there are many historical inaccuracies in this book. I don't consider myself an expert on the time period, but even I saw a lot of these mistakes, which really detracted from my enjoyment of the book.
I don't recommend this novel for someone looking for a satisfying Regency romance. If you're looking for tons of sex scenes, then ONE GOLDEN RING might satisfy you. If you want a good Regency romance, try something by Jacquie D'Alessandro, Mary Jo Putney, Sabrina Jeffries, or Mary Balogh instead. For a list of enjoyable Christmas romances that are keepers, see my list "Christmas romance books worth reading".
another awesome book from Cheryl.......2006-05-16
One Golden Ring is yet another wonderful addition to the library of Historical Romances by Cheryl Bolen. Without repeating previous reviews, I'll tell you that I fell in love with these characters, found myself unable to put the book down, and found myself cheering the characters on throughout the entire journey.
Don't miss this one!
Wonderful and highly recommended.......2006-03-20
One Golden Ring is the best romance (historical or otherwise) I have read in a long time. I loved the main characters as well as the supporting cast (especially Trevor and Verity). Effective balance with action, character development and romance. Some of the negative comments here must be from people who want their romances to read like history books. I prefer mine to have interesting characters and an involving romantic relationship.
Secondary characters helped the story along nicely.......2005-12-26
I would give this book 5 stars, except for 2 things:
1. The words "devilishly" and "beastly" were used wwwaaayyy too much; 2. The wonderful main characters were dragged down by spending too much time worrying about 'cheating' issues -- he believed she still loved her former fiance, and she believed he was still seeing his mistress & possibly one of her friends. This got so old & bogged the story down greatly.
Now, those things aside, the secondary characters were wonderful!!! I loved Trevor, Emmie, Verity, and Randolph. The secondary romance between Randolph & Verity was excellent. I loved this part of the book, and was anxious for every chapter that talked about these two love birds. Emmie was just a darling little girl, and I loved her relationship with Fiona. Trevor was a dear soul, despite his occassional mouthy moods.
4 1/2 stars for the book. On the 1-10 scale, I'd give the book
a 9.7.
You've got to be Kidding.......2005-12-10
Yes this book is very sensuous, but please some of the language set my teeth on edge. I gritted them to finish the novel. Where in a Regency novel would the hero speak of dollars? What kind of heroine has a "deep funk" and does a Regency wedding groom wear a "frock coat" (more synomynous with Abraham Lincoln/Civil War era than the Regency)
These errors were found in the first 50 pages. This novel is not a keeper for me

The citizens of the planet Lithia are some of the most ethical sentient beings Father Ramon Ruiz-Sanchez has ever encountered. True, they have no literature, no fine arts, and don't understand the concept of recreation, but neither do they understand the concepts of greed, envy, lust, or any of the sins and vices that plague humankind. Their world seems darned near perfect. And that is just what disturbs the good Father.
First published in 1959, James Blish's Hugo Award-winning A Case of Conscience is science fiction at its very best: a fast-paced, intelligent story that offers plenty of action while at the same time explores complex questions of values and ethics. In this case, Blish has taken on the age-old battle of good vs. evil. Lithia poses a theological question that lies at the heart of this book: is God necessary for a moral society? The Lithians are nothing if not moral. Not only do they lack the seven deadly sins, they also lack original sin. And without any sort of religious framework, they have created the Christian ideal world, one that humans would be eager to study and emulate. But is it too perfect? Is it in fact, as Father Ruiz-Sanchez suspects, the work of The Adversary? And what role does Egtverchi, the young Lithian raised on Earth, play? Is he an innocent victim of circumstance, or will he bring about the Dies Irae, the day of the wrath of God, upon the earth? The fate of two worlds hinges on the answers to these questions, and will lead to an ancient earth heresy that shakes the Jesuit priest's beliefs to their very core.
A Case of Conscience is a brilliant piece of storytelling, and it packs a lot into a scant 242 pages. Most readers will probably finish the book in one sitting, unable to stop until the spectacular denouement. But the questions posed by this little-known gem will stay with you for days afterward. --P.M. Atterberry
Book Description
Father Ruiz-Sanchez is a dedicated man--a priest who is also a scientist, and a scientist who is also a human being. He has found no insoluble conflicts in his beliefs or his ethics . . . until he is sent to Lithia. There he comes upon a race of aliens who are admirable in every way except for their total reliance on cold reason; they are incapable of faith or belief.
Confronted with a profound scientific riddle and ethical quandary, Father Ruiz-Sanchez soon finds himself torn between the teachings of his faith, the teachings of his science, and the inner promptings of his humanity. There is only one solution: He must accept an ancient and unforgivable heresy--and risk the futures of both worlds . . .
Customer Reviews:
Thought provoking.......2007-09-02
In the year 2049 Father Ruiz-Sanchez is part of a four member commission from Earth on the planet Lithia, trying to determine what level of contact Earth should have with Lithia. Lithia is inhabited by a reptilian race of highly intelligent, logical and almost emotionless beings. They live in harmony with themselves and their environment. It seems an almost perfect society. One member of the commission is very impressed with Lithian society and is eager to establish full relations at once. Another member is contemptuous and hopes to exploit the planet for Earth's benefit.
But Father Sanchez although profoundly sympathetic with the Lithians, feels they are very dangerous and all contact with Lithia should cease immediately. He feels that, because the Lithians are a near-perfect society, yet have no knowledge of God, that they must be a creation of Satan, tempting mankind to embrace atheism. Described in brief this way it sounds kind of unreasonable , but Blish presents Father Sanchez's case convincingly.
`A Case of Conscience' is a very deep, thought provoking book. Deftly combining hard science, religion and philosophy into a tale that asks profound questions of the ways in which biology and religion play in ordering a society. However in order to make the points Blish is trying to make, the plot requires Earth to have a fairly dystopic society, and unfortunately I found the premise and nature of Earth society in 2049 very unlikely. It is an almost fatal flaw in an otherwise compelling book.
Excellent Novella.......2007-08-11
This could have been a thinly-veiled moral dilemma, a question from a philosophy text with a little window dressing. However, Blish is an exceptional writer. The characters, setting, and, most of all, the language he uses to pose this problem are all wonderfully rendered. I choose not to comment on the aspect of this book that seems to have so many people's panties in a tremendous twist, the theology. It's a very well-written book, and it's limited thematic scope makes it well suited to the novella; the one question posed would have been stretched a little thin over the course of a full-length novel. I definitely plan on reading more Blish.
religion and science work together.......2006-08-08
What I like about this book is that you have a protagonist who is a priest but at the same time a hard scientist, a biologist to be exact. In his small team of scientists he sometimes explains to them how he can be both at the same time. I think its great that we get to see inside the mind of a protagonist who can be both priest and scientist. I personally liked it because even though I've been raised in a religious family I am also scientific-minded. It's great to see a protagonist that's like me.
Heaven and Hell.......2006-07-17
I liked this book for the plot but the characters were pretty hollow. The book is very short, and that I would guess is the reason for the lack of depth. I like the root of the story; I just wish it was filled out a little more. This is a pretty good idea for a story, but I just felt like it was gutted of the details. I felt like the author just told me that there were major problems with the political stability of the shelter cities and didn't really prove it. There was ample space to elaborate on many of the points raised but these topics were neglected. Overall I felt like I only received a glimpse of the world that was laid out by Mr. Blish and that a lot more story could have been filled in. It was a good book regardless, I would rather have just the backbone of a good story than a padded, and pointless effort. This is a good book but I thought it could have been much more. For some reason this book also reminded me of Robert A. Heinlein's Stranger In A Strange Land. It seemed to have a similar political figure from another world.
a classic.......2006-05-11
This remains a fascinating book for several reasons. Blish often wrote essays and reviews under the pen name of William Atheling Jr., often on the subject of religion and how it was treated in futuristic stories and novels of the 1940s and 50s. Blish was a constant critic of the genre, but he was also himself an excellent fiction writer--more given to short stories and novellas than novels of any significant size. Case of Conscience is probably not his best (that distinction goes to his excellent novel Doctor Mirabilis, based on the life of the legendary Roger Bacon), but it was the book that got him the Hugo Award, and it stands up well against more recent forays into the realm of religion and science. The main character is the most fascinating, a Jesuit biologist who discovers `an impossible world', one, in sharp contrast to Earth, without any gaps in the fossil record, an apparently perfect case study of Darwin's theory at its purest, and a direct challenge to anyone professing a faith in the supernatural. My understanding is that Book I is basically the entire novella originally published in "Worlds of If" magazine. The second part of the book, not as satisfying in my opinion (and apparently Blish thought so too) as the first, was written specifically for the hardcover edition.

Book Description
The conscience of today's college students is guided by the personal moral values that underlie their concept of justice. College professors frequently avoid discussions of moral values, fearful of either the deconstructionist's criticism or the alleged "wall of separation" between church and state. Regardless of their reasons, they tend to argue that today's students have no interest in discussing abstract concepts of morality. The Daveys argue that given the right case studies of moral dilemmas, today's college students will enthusiastically share and discuss their own moral values, learn to critically examine pressing social issues, and grow to new levels of understanding. More than two dozen scenarios involving moral questions concerning race, poverty, crime, drugs, sex, religion, educational funding, and constitutional rights are presented. These issues are faced by a generation raised in the "information revolution." College students live in a world of such rapid change that nothing is certain about their future. It may well be that there has never been a time when college students were more eager to discuss fundamental questions about right and wrong, and to examine their own moral values. This timely work is of value in any course touching upon moral values, including courses in sociology, education, political science and law, child development, criminal justice, and philosophy.

would you trust these kids to sell you a used car?.......2002-05-28
The Davey's have produced a very thought provoking book that will stimulate a good deal of discussion, and not just in college classrooms. The moral debates among college students which they chronicle in this book offer an insight into a generation that has rejected the radical moral relativism of the sixties generation while nonetheless rejecting the moral package deal of the Christian right. This is an exciting and readable book that deserves widespread attention.
College professors in the social sciences and the humanities should take a serious look at this unique work. Lower division courses could certainly benefit from the fascinating moral dilemmas presented by the "scenarios" which have been designed to motivate the most recalcitrant student into discussions of their values. Certainly the moral quandaries examined here will produce heated disagreements among today's college students.
Ethics 101 Revisited.......2001-08-10
With its very engaging format, this book at first appears to be merely a diverting sampling of college-student answers to some of the moral and ethical riddles that beset our legal system. It soon becomes clear it is very much more. As the authors dissect the sometimes surprisingly insightful responses these young people offer to complex legal/moral isues, they skillfully guide them through the labyrinthe of contradictions and occasional absurdities that plague our system of justice. The result is both thought-provoking and entertaining and moreover, reveals a decided thirst for moral/ethical discusions in our classroom. As the debate on bio-ethics and technological advances heats up, this is no doubt the first of many such books.
Lack of morals.......2001-07-07
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book about morals on college campus's. I was shocked to learn that so many students were able to validate their lack of morals and considered cheating to be the the norm in college classrooms.I cannot figure out how this acceptance of lying and cheating came to be...I just hope it passes. I think this is a book all high school seniors should read and discuss. Hopefully, they will choose to not become part of the "new moral conscience."

Entertaining and Perceptive.......2004-02-12
Finally! An entertaining and perceptive book about socially responsible companies that clearly shows how some of the best in the business are combining ethics and profitability over the long haul. The chapters on Ben & Jerry's, Patagonia and Celestial Seasonings reveal insight that I have not seen elsewhere - largely because of the insider's perspective that the authors gained from studying these firms so closely for over 10 years. But the chapters on lesser-known enterprises like ShoreBank, Sunrise Medical and America Works may be the real gems, detailing the various ways they are really improving their customers' lives while functioning successfully under the constraints of a for-profit world. (Of course, as a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, I am obviously partial to the chapter that describes how community minded the team is!) This is truly a great read, and will definitely prove valuable to anyone who would like to imbue their business with the kind of values that are all too rare today.
Just What I Needed.......2004-01-14
A terrific little book that's inspiring and entertaining for both employers and employees. I'm glad to know it's ending up on the required reading lists of so many business schools. As someone who runs a fairly large company, I found the chapter on "The 13 Lessons of Conscientious Leadership" a great addition to my "managerial toolbox ".
Doubts...maybe outdated and incorrect info.......2000-05-31
Don't know about now, but just as an example, according to a report in 1998, Espirit made some of its clothes in sweatshops paying as little as $0.13 per hour and horrible working conditions. You call that a socially responsible company?
What an inspiration!.......1999-07-12
I just read this book for a course I'm taking, and while it is a little outdated it is the best look at "socially responsible" business people that I have been able to find. I would like to find out what these companies are up to today and hope the authors have an update in mind.
Book Description
The Kentucky-born son of a Baptist preacher, with an early tendency toward racial prejudice, Supreme Court Justice Wiley Rutledge (1894-1949) became one of the Court's leading liberal activists and an early supporter of racial equality, free speech, and church-state separation. Drawing on more than 160 interviews, John M. Ferren provides a valuable analysis of Rutledge's life and judicial decisionmaking and offers the most comprehensive explanation to date for the Supreme Court nominations of Rutledge, Felix Frankfurter, and William O. Douglas.
Rutledge was known for his compassion and fairness. He opposed discrimination based on gender and poverty and pressed for expanded rights to counsel, due process, and federal review of state criminal convictions. During his brief tenure on the Court (he died following a stroke at age fifty-five), he contributed significantly to enhancing civil liberties and the rights of naturalized citizens and criminal defendants, became the Court's most coherent expositor of the commerce clause, and dissented powerfully from military commission convictions of Japanese generals after World War II. Through an examination of Rutledge's life, Ferren highlights the development of American common law and legal education, the growth of the legal profession and related institutions, and the evolution of the American court system, including the politics of judicial selection.
Customer Reviews:
A Little Prejudiced...........2007-04-10
For anyone with an interest in law or history this is a great read. Justice Rutledge was my grandfather's first cousin -- thus the initial reason I bought the book. Unfortunately the dust jacket was crinkled upon arrival so I'll have to send it back for a new copy.
Author & subject both "salt of the earth".......2005-01-18
As the folks at Amazon could tell you, I read many novels and very few biographies. I am a corporate lawyer, and have not practiced constitutional law since I clerked for Judge Ferren, the author of this Rutledge bio, more than 20 years ago. I picked up this book because of my connection to the author, but I stuck with it for other reasons. First, the writing is elegant and precise; it is a very readable book. The book tells the story of a good man (and very good lawyer/dean/judge) who is concerned with doing his job right, respected others, was respected by others in return, and achieved great things -- what an encouraging, uncynical story! (Not dissimilar to the author's own story, a fact that creates an extra richness of texture in this book, especially in its descriptions of the life of an appellate judge.) In addition, the constitutional issues that the Court dealt with during WWII and the immediate post-war era remain fascinating -- and very timely. These issues are made understandable to nonexperts without being oversimplified. I learned a lot, and greatly enjoyed the process.
A Fine Biography of a Neglected Justice.......2004-12-15
At long last, thanks to Judge Ferren, we have a complete biography of Justice Wiley Rutledge. While Rutledge is not much remembered today, and his tenure on the Supreme Court was relatively brief (1943-49), his significance merits more attention than he has received. Judge Ferren employs a completely different approach than the only other biography of the Justice, Harper's "Justice Rutledge and the Bright Constellation" (1965). Harper focused almost exclusively upon Justice Rutledge's decisions. Judge Ferren does not get Rutledge on the court until page 222 (out of 548). While one might conclude that perhaps too much detail occupies the pre-Court discussion, I can't think of another judicial biography that so effectively affords one a feeling of becoming so intimately familiar with its subject. This initial section is particularly effective in discussing the political maneuvering that accompanied filling several vacancies on the Court, including Rutledge's. The book's central focus, Rutledge on the Court, is very well developed. Judge Ferren not only brings his own insight into the judicial process to his analysis, but discusses some unique aspects as well, such as Rutledge's habit of asking trusted law faculty members their opinions on issues before the court, and Rutledge's exhaustive preparation for writing opinions. The book also adds to our understanding of the personal interplay in that most bombastic of Supreme Courts, that chaired by Chief Justice Stone. Interspersed with the discussion of Court cases is additional biographical material relating to the Justice. Finally, the underlying research is simply awesome--truly a labor of love. While it is a very long book, if you are interested in Justice Rutledge or his period on the Court, it makes for indispensable reading.
