Rambling excursion into the "hook and bullet" press.......2006-09-08
This book is just exactly like sitting down at a campfire with Mr. O'Connor and hearing him reminisce about his life. Only, he's had a few scotches, so he kind of bounces around some, and because he's into his eighth decade, he repeats himself a fair amount. But you don't care, because he's a legend and if he wants to ramble, let him ramble. Shut up and pour him another drink and listen.
I really enjoyed this. He cuts loose on many of the fakes and frauds and stuffed shirts he's known in his time. He talks about how hard it is to make a living as an outdoor writer, the long running argument with "the big bore boys" (Elmer Keith and his coterie of readers), and the ins and outs of pack trips, guides, white hunters, safaris, incompetent editors, talentless writers, great gun companies run into the ground by bean counters, wild eyed inventors mortgaging their house to build gizmos that no hunter will ever buy, the list goes on and on.
I put off buying it for years because it's expensive, but I'm sorry I did. It's highly enjoyable, and O'Connor pulls no punches. It was, after all, his last book, and he was going to write what he darn well pleased.

Through the course of a long and distinguished career in letters, George Plimpton has crafted an art form from participatory journalism, and Paper Lion is his big touchdown. In the mid-'60s, Plimpton joined the Detroit Lions at their preseason camp as a 36-year-old rookie quarterback wannabe, and stuck with the club through an intra-squad game before the paying public a month later. What resulted is one of the funniest and most insightful books ever written on the game; 30 years later it remains a major model of what was then blossoming into New Journalism. Plimpton's breezy style wonderfully captures the pressures and tensions rookies confront in trying to make it, the hijinks that pervade the atmosphere when 60 high-strung guys are forced to live together in close quarters, and the host of rites and rituals with which football loves to coat itself. Of course, Plimpton didn't make it as a football hero; he barely accounts himself with dignity on the field, which is just as well. You don't have to be a lion when you've got a typewriter that can roar.

Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
A talented journalist joins the Detroit Lions to get get a greater insight into what it is to be a professional American football player. Some amusing moments because of his ineptitude.
This was a top class team dominanting their opponents, so they wangled an agreement that if they got a big enough lead they could put George in as a last string quaterback.
Top quality sportswriting work here.
Paper Lion, Golden Writer.......2006-10-27
Long before ESPN cameras and behind-the scenes television programs, George Plimpton went out on a mission to the magical world of the NFL, looking to bring back an original insight on the dream life of a professional football player. In Paper Lion, Plimpton arrives in Michigan for a month of training camp and a preseason scrimmage with the Detroit Lions, having brought a suitcase of clothes, some cleats, and a minimal trace of athletic ability. Though he was not a very skilled or successful member of the Lions, his role is an essential one for us as readers. Plimpton does a marvelous job of painting the picture of a profeesional football player with vivid details and intriguing technique, most notably simile. He details aspects of the training camp with clear references for the everyday reader. This helps explain feelings and strategies such as the Lions' kickoff coverage: " the downfield rush was straight, like a ruler sweeping crumbs off a table." (178). Plimpton also captures the emotions of the players during camp and reproduces them through simile as well: "When a player was hurt in a scrimmage, the others seemed to point their backs pointedly...as if an injury were communicable, like mumps." (194). Another example comes on page 253 when he compares the physical toll of football to "Bronco riding." These details and relatable comparisons are what help Plimpton to bring the reader into the setting and let him experience training camp as if he too were wearing shoulder-pads.
While Plimpton does an excellent job of depicting the setting and emotions that go along with training camp in the NFL, at times he seemed a little too out of place. Plimpton was a writer for Sports Illustrated and thus should have a keen sense on sports and what the players go through. However, there were times in the book where he approached the situation as if he had come from another planet, rather than a different occupation. Such is the case on page 180 when he asks a running back: "do you close your eyes when you run for the middle of the line?" As a sportswriter and an intelligent person it would seem that he would know that a professional athlete would keep his eyes open and not shy away from the contact of the line in a game situation.
George Plimpton's Paper Lion is a great read as well as an entertaining passageway to the world of sports. Plimpton's ability to accurate scenes and vividly detail characters makes a reader feel as though he has not so much holding a book but in fact his own personal uniform on the Detroit Lions.
Hear The Lion Roar.......2006-08-30
Back in the 1960s, writer George Plimpton began "covering" a variety of sports through participating on/with pro teams/athletes and reporting on it through books, magazine articles and TV specials.
Perhaps his most famous was in the early 1960s when he was "signed" by the Detroit Lions as a 36-year-old rookie trying to make the club as a third-string quarterback. Plimpton - wearing jersey number 0 - practiced with the team for one month.
His quarterbacking culminates with his appearance in a scrimmage where Plimpton calls a number of plays under game conditions.
The book leads the reader through the highs and lows of Plimpton as a player, along with great anecdotes on the teammates and coaches.
A reprint is slated for publication in September 2006. I hope the TV special on Plimpton's training camp and QB play gets dusted off during the upcoming NFL season. Anyone reading this inside that large campus in Bristol, Conn.?
Old Lions Fan.......2006-07-10
A very interesteng read, If you are old enough to remember all the players.
One of Sports Illustrated's one hundred best sports books One I missed.......2006-03-20
This book is listed as one of 'Sports Illustrated's' one -hundred best sports books of all time. Many of the reviewers of this book on ' Amazon' also consider it to be of the highest quality. They point to its giving the true feeling of what it is to try out and play football. They point to the excellent human interest stories, the way Plimpton writes about the lives of the players off and on the field.
When I read this book quite a few years ago I did not really get into the feeling and humor of it. This happens often with books. The book may turn out be better than we were at the time that we read it.
When I get a chance I'll have another look at this one.
By the way one reviewer points out how much pro football and athletes have changed with the years, and the big big money. Even in 1965 this reader claims there was an innocent and integrity that does not pertain in the over- drugged and over- hyped sports world of today.

Michael Howard in The Cauldron.......2000-05-02
I, CROWLEY Almost the Last Confession of the Beast by Snoo Wilson {Mandrake of Oxford, P.O Box 250 , Oxford OX1 1AP £9.99 252pp} Whatever you think of Aleister Crowley - and let's face it, he was a right-wing, misogynistic druggie with some unpleasant personal habits{Pardon? Ed} - his contribution to the magical, pagan and occult revival of the last century was considerable. At a time when psychopaths like Hitler and Stalin were murdering millions in their death camps he hardly deserves the silly title of "Wickedest Man in the World". This is a spoof autobiography of the Great Beast allegedly written when he was in Hastings at the end of his life. It covers the period when he lived in New York and then founded his abbey in Sicily. It is darkly amusing, entertaining and recommended.
A witty and sharp account of the Beast's 'last confession'.......1999-03-31
Wilson proves himself an expert on Crowley's life, magickal theory and philosophy. I laughed (and cried) over this book. It was a pleasure to read from start to finish.
A 'must read' for occultists everywhere. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
Book Description
West's last novel (he died at his desk, at its completion) is a strong story of the philosopher and heretic Giordano Bruno, who was burnt by the Inquisition for his heresy. A major release!
From the Foreword by Thomas Keneally:
"Bruno was that perilous thing, a free spirit, and suffered death for his right to certain concepts. I knew from conversations with Morris that Giordano Bruno was a soul mate, someone with whose life history Morris' identified, even though Morris possessed a somewhat less strident temperament than Bruno's. "Failed priest," as Morris has Bruno declare in this tale, "fugitive monk, magus with a box of conjuring tricks, boaster, prevaricator, would-be torchbearer trudging through his own darkness, garrulous in dialogue, viperous in debate."

West.......2007-02-22
Morris west was one of the best and this last one proves the point. This is his last book and he has proved himself yet again as the master of vatican suspense. Many of his books are superb and modelled after part fiction and part christian history.

Book Description
Embracing the shattered pieces of the soul and championing the resilient nature of the heart, A Woman’s Worth takes readers on a journey of startling depth. From a speakeasy whorehouse in the bottoms of Alabama to a luxurious high-rise apartment in Kenya, acclaimed author Tracy Price-Thompson crosses boundaries of sexuality, gender, and culture to accentuate the core of black identity: the enormous strength of family.
“Ain’t nothing like a Black man. No other man on the face of the earth can hold a light up to him, coming or going. Why do you think women are all the time chasing behind them? Smooth game and all, when a brotha loves you, he loves you right.”
—from A Woman’s Worth
Abeni Omorru is a stunning Kenyan woman who is haunted by piercing memories. Although her father’s wealth ensures her a life of prestige, childhood trauma has left her emotionally damaged and sexually promiscuous. While Abeni takes on many lovers, none come close to healing the wounds of her heart—and only a man who understands her worth can truly claim her soul.
Bishop Johnson is also haunted by his past. Raised by prostitutes in a rural Alabama town, he is a promising teenage boxer—until his dreams are shattered when his parents are murdered during a violent robbery and he takes revenge on the perpetrators. Bishop goes to jail, and when he is released he has a volatile temper and a mean left hook to back it up.
Trouble continues to find Bishop, and he is forced to leave Alabama and travel to Kenya with the Peace Corps. There he falls in love with Abeni, and they marry. When Bishop learns the secret of Abeni’s past, he is force to make a decision that may cost him more than one man should ever have to sacrifice.

272Pgs - This is my personal view of this book.
It did not grab my attention at all. At the forth chapter, I was looking for my receipt. More Women are becoming Soul Searchers today and if you are a Title Seeker like myself meaning (a title of a book can prompt you to purchase) this book will definitely be a lesson well deserved.
I ABSOLUTLELY LOVED THIS BOOK!!!.......2007-03-09
This is book could be named, "When A Man Loves a Woman." Bishop really loved Abeni and she loved him back just as hard.
A Woman's Worth.......2006-08-08
This book is awesome! It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. The characters really come to life in this book--you feel what they feel as you read this wonderful book!
THIS IS A WINNER!.......2006-07-06
It's been awhile since I've ordered a few books and rather than bore you with the same old rave reviews, I just have a few things to state. The book kept me up until my eyes could not take it anymore; The character Bishop in the book was fascinating. I won't go into details but the fact that it deals with FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) which is going on in certain tribes in Africa paints a picture for me to better understand the culture. Althought I don't agree with it. Pick the book up and you will not be dissappointed.
EMOTIONAL.......2006-06-02
I just finished reading this book, it was very good. All the characters were great.I liked what it was about, the story really touched my heart and it made me cry. Get this book, you will not be disappointed.

Lot of transitions.......2005-08-24
This particular installment of the Nightwing saga is a lot of story set up for some developments that come later. Some points of interest: The strange character "Nite-wing" is nearly killed, and Nightwing rushes to the rescue. One of Dick's earliest foes in the series has returned with a vengeance and an interesting new m.o.
What I like about the Nightwing series is rather straightforward. It has a great, action-packed style of art and dialogue. So much happens on every page. If you aren't careful, you'll miss something.
Second, Nightwing is so different from Batman, despite their similar skills, methods, and talents. Dixon has kept part of the optimism and positive social adjustment that makes Grayson a more identifiable character. Part of the draw of Batman is that he is so mysterious. Dick Grayson says in this installment to Robin: "You, Alfred, and I have been close to him for years, yet still we seem to know hardly anything about him."
Nightwing, on the other hand, is a far less enigmatic figure that takes Robin under his wing. Every parent wants better for their kids than what they got. Batman wanted better for Dick, and Dick wants better for Tim. Nightwing is kind of like a combination big brother/father figure to Robin. Their cameraderie is exemplified in the scene where they are doing combat training with blindfolds.
I really like the creative team for this magazine. The books are just the issues of the comic added together. Nonetheless, Nightwing is a genuine crowd pleaser.
Nice book.......2001-10-25
If you love Nightwing you wont be disapointed!
Modern superheroes at their best!.......2000-04-12
Nightwing is one of the best monthly books out there. This third volume collects some memorable stories, when Dixon and McDaniel were really hitting their stride. Dixon portrays Nightwing as the very definition of a hero, while McDaniel's artwork is both moody and frantic. While this wonderful team may not be doing the series anymore, here's a collection of some of their best work for fans to treasure.

In this third installment in the popular Fish! series, the authors examine change as a necessary, ongoing process that should never stop--at least not if one wants to keep the workplace vital and fully alive. Using a fictitious sushi restaurant as an example, this fable examines the three principles that Lundin, Christensen, and Paul believe are necessary for continuing success: Find It ("it" being each employee's personal vision of the business), Live It, and Coach It. Readers of the authors' previous books--Fish! A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results and Fish! Tales--should find its familiarity comforting. For those new to the series, this standalone volume is easy to read and highly valuable. --David Bombeck

The "o-FISH!-al" follow-up to the phenomenal bestselling Fish! and Fish! Tales, Fish! Sticks is a stand alone business parable that shows you how to come up with a vision for your business and how to keep it alive, vital, and renewed through tough times, such as turnover in management and staff or a troubled economy.
Using the example of a hugely successful, fictional sushi restaurant as a model for a vision of continual renewal, Fish! Sticks employs the same kind of easy-to-read story that was used in Fish! to illustrate its three major principals of continued success: Commit, Be it, and Coach it.
When Stephanie, a new manager, takes over from a wildly popular and now promoted boss, she is faced with the problem of how to keep spirits up in a corporate unit that has, frankly, started to get bored and cranky and revert to its old ways. But then she visits the amazing Taka Sushi (formerly Taka Teriyaki), with its lines of customers cheerfully waiting for hours to get in. Soon, she realizes that the way to keep her employees motivated and her customers delighted can be learned from a bunch of waiters who teach one another everything they need to know. And when she finds out just how the owner of Taka knew to switch her main bill of fare from teriyaki to sushi long before anyone else, what she really discovers is the secret of keeping your work fresh.

IT means: Find Purpose, Live Identity, Coach Accountability.......2007-08-19
An easy read and good use of the fable to emphasis an often overlooked part of performance management; the importance of each individual finding a piece of their Me Inc. vision within the Business Inc. vision. Although authors Lundin, Christensen, and Paul never use the term Me Inc. in this fable about sustaining a performance transformation within the 6th-floor neurological care ward of Good Samaritan Hospital (Business Inc. in the fable), referring to the connection as IT; they clearly convey the message that sustainable performance is only possible when individuals find their IT within the wards vision of customer care.
Recognizing that sustainable motivation/energy can only be created when individuals connect their purpose, identity, and accountability with their business's performance vision, the authors show how the employee's must Find IT thru individual conversations, Live IT by putting their unique identity into action, and hold each other accountable thru a Coach IT process unencumbered by hierarchy. While fables can only go so far in conveying the complexity of organizational effectiveness, this fable brings a critical piece of the puzzle to the front. It is recommended for use with teams as the next step after the initial visioning and performance goal setting processes of performance management. Dennis DeWilde, author of "The Performance Connection"
Decent but not as good as the original.......2007-08-01
After reading about this book I was excited by the opportunity to get some more insight into the "Fish!" world, and I was especially interested in learning about `how to make change stick'. I liked how the book was another "fable" type story, and thought that this might make another good Book Club selection for our company book club.
Well, I read the book, and although I thought it had some merit, it was not nearly as easily accessible and distillable to the same audiences as the first "Fish!" book was. I was still glad I bought the book, and I did get something out of it, but I had real trouble imagining trying to pass this message on to others in our company.
I will say this, though. One message that came out of this book and that hit me loud and clear was that for "change" to stick, the meaning of the change has to be personalized to each individual, and it has to mean something to them, because once all the bells and whistles of the program are gone, and the initial excitement dies down, it will be impossible to keep a culture change program going unless others can relate to it personally and continue to buy into it on a day to day basis.
So, I thought THAT message was valuable and worth buying the book for, but I don't think I will be passing this out at our next book club. It was just not a book that was otherwise easily understandable to a much wider audience.
However, if you haven't read the original "Fish!" book yet, I HIGHLY recommend it...

Burkett's Best.......2006-11-06
True, Mr. Burkett says a lot of the same things in this book that he said in his other books but there were a few differences in this book. I was most impressed with what he had to say about the church's role in charitable giving. Prior to reading this book I was unclear of that role. I am of the opinion that every Christian needs to come to terms with finances and material possessions and Mr. Burkett, God bless his soul, provided the best explanations that I have come in contact with. Let me sum it up this way: if you are consumed and caught up in the rat race this book will show you a way out. Powerful stuff.
Wow!.......2006-08-16
Mr. Burkett once again defies logic with his interestingly silly version of economics. If you are actually interested in understanding the economy or anything about economic history, please do not read this book. Dr. Burkett received his honorary PhD from a university that does not have an economics program. John Maynard Keynes was not a socialist or communist. The errors in this book are too numerous to count. Being a Christian does not make you an economist, or give you the right to print your opinions as stated facts. The economic information contained within this book proves one thing: Mr. Burkett never cracked a basic economics textbook.
Every christian should read this book........1998-02-26
Wonderful job of explaining how an economy begins and showing where ours is and where it's headed (cashless system). Full of biblical truths concerning principles of finance. "Your Finances in Changing Times" is a well written, easy to understand and very informative book that will help you put your finances back on track by putting God back in the midst of things. Learn to be a good steward of what God has blessed you with and position yourself for Him bless your finances. Steven (N.C.)

Very practical and sound advice from a biblical perspective.......2000-06-07
I found this book to be VERY good! It strongly incorporates biblical principles of stewardship and money-management into practical everyday advice. Burkett does an excellent job of being working from a basic premise to a more in-depth description and explanation of various topics. I would highly recommend this book to people new to money management as well as the experienced manager.

The Best in Financial Advice!!!.......2003-04-13
Larry Burkett, here, gives what I believe is the complete money guide, and he offers biblical concepts and practical suggestions for building a sound financial program. He is the founder and president of Christian Financial Concepts, and in this book, he tackles such topics as: The Economy, the U.S. economy, the cashless system, what is wealth, what is financial bondage, why accumulate wealth, who deserves help, and other such topics.
This may be a dated book, because it is just about 10 years old, but its principles are timeless and you can learn a great deal from this wise counselor, and practically apply these to your own situation.
Highly recommended!!!
