Book Description

In this series of intricately related texts, internationally known poet, critic, and performance artist David Antin explores the experience of time--how it's felt, remembered, and recounted. These free-form talk pieces--sometimes called talk poems or simply talks--began as improvisations at museums, universities, and poetry centers where Antin was invited to come and think out loud. Serious and playful, they move rapidly from keen analysis to powerful storytelling to passages of pure comedy, as they range kaleidoscopically across Antin's experiences: in the New York City of his childhood and youth, the Eastern Europe of family and friends, and the New York and Southern California of his art and literary career. The author's analysis and abrasive comedy have been described as a mix of Lenny Bruce and Ludwig Wittgenstein, his commitment to verbal invention and narrative as a fusion of Mark Twain and Gertrude Stein. Taken together, these pieces provide a rich oral history of and critical context for the evolution of the California art scene from the 1960s onward.

4 out of 5 stars Talking Head.......2005-07-05

I keep going back to this collection, again and again, mining it for its virtues. Antin is a master at talking, and these essays were apparently written first as improvisations, then polished over and over till they attain the shine of fine old silver. He has a way of describing things that make them seem brand new. His mind skips from one thing to another, exploring their connections, and yet he's light on his feet, like a stone skimming across the surface of a beautiful pond. His "manifesto" on postmodern practice turns out to be an account, rather like Mark Twain in comic richness, of himself and his wife trying to buy a bed and not knowing how to select the best one, and the awkwardness of trying out a bed in a furniture store, even with salespeople encouraging you to lie down and get comfortable on their samples. Never explicitly does he explain how this Jean Kerr type story might be an allegory for postmodernism, but Antin is wise enough to let the tale speak for itself.

His memories of figures varied as John Baldesarri and Herbert Marcuse are quite amusing. Best of all is Antin's line, without the benefit of capital letters, and sentences floating in scraps of phrases like comic book dialogue freed of balloon moorning. he approximates the free-floating effect of talking to someone who has absolute authority over thinking, and how liberating it is to submit to such a man. Reading the essays in this book, we long for more of such talk transcription. Apparently there are many, many more talks waiting for publication, and of course Antin happily is still very much with us planning more. He calls these talks "poems" and of course that is his right.

My caveat is that he spends too many pages repeating himself on the zaniness and spiritual emptiness of California, and he seems to be patting himself (and his wife, performance artist Eleanor Antin) on the back for bringing culture to San Diego way back when -- in the 1970s. This thrust seems short-sighted and an insult to San Diego. However, this is a book for the ages and I expect will bring pleasure to anyone who can get into it.

    Book Description

What are the limits of paper? Can a two-dimensional image move? Transform? Lift off the page? Following lavish multimedia issues including Scent, which featured vials of original perfumes, and World which came in an exclusive Gap satchel, Visionaire's 48th edition, Magic, brings the still picture to life in 25 unbound cards, 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches each, printed in the latest lenticular technology, a process that captures motion on a page. Visionaire invited filmmakers, photographers and artists to explore the magic of motion. Contributors include Spike Jonze, Wong Kar Wai, Pedro Almodovar, Gus Van Sant, Viktor & Rolf, Mario Sorrento, Karl Lagerfeld and Moriko Mori. Their three-second clips were transformed into lenticular images, images that shift when seen from different angles. Remove them from the case, which features an 18-karat gold Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra on a satin ribbon, and tilt each one to and fro to watch it move. To be released in February, just in time for Valentine's Day, in a numbered limited edition of 3000 copies.

      Book Description

Two years ago, Train, a high-level assassin known as Number XIII in Chronos, left the secret society to live by his own rules. Since then, Train has been a sweeper, a bounty hunter, catching criminals and bringing them in alive. But his main mission is to find a former Chronos member who killed his best friend.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars New Story, Old Feel.......2007-01-03

This is a great series. Kinda Cowboy Bebop-ish, with a few interesting twists. The characters seem familiar, but not too much... The comedy is well done, and Train Heartnet is unique. I loved it, can't wait to collect the whole series.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing new here, but still a fun read.......2006-09-02

Train and Sven are "sweepers," bounty hunters in this shounen action series. Train was once the Black Cat, an infamous assassin for the mysterious organization, Chronos, but he betrayed his former employers and escaped from their control. Now he's searching for the man who murdered his best friend, and trying to earn enough money to eat.

The first chapter was a stand-alone story about our starving heroes looking for a target that will pay their bills for a few days. Just substitute almost any episode of Cowboy Bebop here, and you get the idea. Train risks their catch for an onion bun, much to Sven's dismay, and their plans go awry when a hit-man for Chronos pays them a visit.

Things started getting a little more interesting near the middle of the book, when they meet Rinslet Walker, a thief who needs a little help from the Black Cat. Rinslet is after some research data, but to obtain it, she needs crime boss Torneo Rudman out of the way. With his bounty enough to entice them to partner with her, they head off to Sapidoa to earn a little money. They discover that Torneo is researching nano technology, and he intends to build an army of super human clones. While Train is off gather information on Torneo, Sven meets a little girl named Eve. What he doesn't know if that Eve is one of Torneo research experiments, and she's also a highly skilled assassin. Will he learn the truth before it's too late?

This book reminded me of Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and about a dozen other series. There's nothing really original here, but the book was still fun to read. The art has crisp, clean lines, but I hate Train's character design. He looks like he has four donuts stapled to his jacket! The kitty collar is kind of cute, but the coat has got to go!

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the most purely fun manga I've ever read.......2006-08-19

Probably as close as you'll get to American comicbook with that amazing typical flare for incredible choreography and interesting characters/ situations. Every volume of Black Cat just continues to amaze me as one of the few manga (and I read quite a few) that I simply have to read from cover to cover with few breaks. I've read some reviews that say BC is "not very deep". This is true. But, that's okay. There are some great things going for it.... great little conspiracy with Train's past/ Creed's (Train's ex-partner) grand scheme, mild flirtation with Train and Rinslet and some awesome action bouts with characters who can create flame, use blood as weapons and even a dinosaur in volume 4. I've been very impressed and think most hardcore and new fans of manga will enjoy this title with just one try. As with all manga it helps when the art is good and like my most favorite....black kat benefits from Yabuki sans clean art. I noticed in a sketch of Sven in Vol, 4 but I swear this guy reminds me of Joe Madureira. Great read...summer fun at its' best.

5 out of 5 stars Funny yet cool.......2006-04-18

This was great. I enjoyed it a lot. It has The main character Train/Black Cat who is now a sweeper/bounty hunter after quitting and organization. He is comical and acts silly, but he is really smart and thinks a lot on the inside. His partner is funny too. This book covers a lot but leaves you on the edge of your seat. My only advice would be buy it. Unless you dont like the suspense than wait til volume 2 comes out may 2 and buy both. Reccomended to young adults not kids.

5 out of 5 stars Not the newest of themes, but glorious nonetheless.......2006-02-26

I first heard about Black Cat in the pages of Shonen Jump magazine; simply a one-page "Manga from Japan!" preview sort of thing. Then a couple months later, the same magazine printed the first chapter as a preview with the promise that the graphic novels would be released beginning in March of 2006. Well, it came out early, so I snagged a copy as soon as I heard about it, and I was NOT disappointed!

The story is not that original; it's a bit like Cowboy Bebop meets Trigun. Quite a bit like Cowboy Bebop character-wise, mildly like Trigun setting-wise and in the fact that the main character is an untouchable, carefree gunslinger. That doesn't deter from the fact that it is still a great and interesting story; a very successful re-hash of old ideas.

Train, with the not exactly secret identity of Black Cat, has become a Sweeper (bounty hunter who hunts lesser criminals) in order to leave his past life working for the enigmatic orginization Chronos behind. Of course, what good is a shady past if it doesn't haunt you? Various people from Chronos come after Train, and they either want him to come back or to die.
Train's partner Sven (my favorite character thus far) is an ex-cop who wears an eyepatch over his right eye and smokes more cigarettes than I had thought humanly possible. He's very skilled with a gun, though his true forte is tact. Being a former cop, he is much more wise about the situation every time than Train seems to be.
Rinslett is introduced about halfway through the first volume; a sexy thief who always works in disguise (VERY much like Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop...though Faye didn't wear too many disguises if memory serves). She forms an alliance with Train and Sven in order to kill an underworld crime boss who has been funding research and development for bio-engineering humans into weapons of war. His greatest success thus far is Eve; a little girl who can transform at will, though only one arm at a time (she's not fully developed at this point in the story). Exactly why Rinslett wants the crime boss dead is a bit uncertain; she's not exactly open about everything with her partners.

Overall, this manga is great, at least in my opinion. It features one of my favorite art styles, an enjoyable, deep story that's still followable, characters that are easy to like, and action sequences that are comprehendable (unlike Dragon Knights, for instance). I'm definently going to be faithfully buying this series, and I hope that it becomes one of your favorites too!

                        Book Description

For some time now, writer-actor-performance artist Spalding Gray has been carrying around with him a monster: a manuscript of a novel called Impossible Vacation, a book that at last sighting weighed in at about 1,800 pages. Monster in a Box, Gray's latest monologue, is a guided tour between the stations of his writing block, which include a field trip to Nicaragua, a disastrous guest appearance at the Moscow film festival, and a stint in Los Angeles hunting down the fabled few who have never written a screenplay. Hilarious and poignant, Monster in a Box is further proof that Gray has not only captured the dangerous spirit of our age but swallowed it whole.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite .......2005-08-19

Spalding Gray's suicide robbed us of our finest raconteur. His monologues were funny as hell, but they were also deep and thought-provoking at the same time. He is missed.

"Monster in a Box" is my favorite of Spalding's monologues- even better than "Swimming to Cambodia", in my opinion. I think with this one he really hit his stride.

4 out of 5 stars Spalding Gray at his best.......1999-08-17

I greatly enjoyed Spalding Gray's work; much better than the later "Gray's Anatomy" and "It's a Slippery Slope".

4 out of 5 stars Big Box of Monster Garage.......2007-01-10

Very readable and informative, though the projects require a sophisticated degree of prior knowledge and an abundance of expensive tools.

4 out of 5 stars The Big Box of Monster Garage.......2006-11-10

The books were very informative and my only wish was that they discussed technique a little more rather than placing such a large emphasis on equipment selection.

5 out of 5 stars Monster Garage Bible.......2006-07-22

I got this set when my son and I started restoring our Harley. It has helped him, more than me. The three books put everything from the show into printed pages with all the details necessary to make it a handy reference. Covers painting, welding, customizing, and is better for those starting out/little experience than those who have skills already. Unless of course you just want it for the pictures of cool rides.

My 6 yr old daughter loved it when it arrived and read it a few times but then seems to have tired of it rather quickly. It is a fun book however. I recommend it.

This book is great! I read it a few years ago to a friends daughter and just loved to listen to her giggle! I now read it to my own 10 month old daughter and she is so intrigued. She loves to touch the fir and strings on the pages! I recommend this book for all ages. The story is cute and the pages are colorful and fun to look at!

"INCLUDED: 99 multi-color cards, 50 1" square monster counters, 56 H.P. Lovecraft bank notes, 2 Arkham Gazettes, 1 rules folder, 2 About Your Investigator folders, 1 17x22" full-color mapboard showing Arkham and the 8 Other Worlds, 8 investigator cards, 8 investigator pawns, 2 dice, investigator card markers, inserts. ARKHAM HORROR IS PLAYABLE by up to 8 people. As fearless investigators, the players seek to uncover the strange events and stranger beings behind the placid facade of this New England town. Duty and fortune may separate the investigators. Injury, mental shock, or magic can affect or remove them from the game. The arcane powers of the Cthulhu Mythos, a sinister amalgam of alien beings and human cultists, have come to Earth by means of magical gates. If the investigators destroy these gates before the space-time continuum is irrevocably strained, then the players win. If too many gates open, the players lose, and Arkham is overrun. Exploring its streets, buildings, woods, and parks, the investigators meet helpful and hindering people, find magic-laden books, and discover, trade for, or purchase helpful items. No player loses unless all the players lose, nor is any player eliminated from the game before it ends: losing one investigator, another is chosen, and play renewed."
