Book Description

Despite inheriting a moribund college football program, and half-empty stadium, Barry Alvarez never compromised his values, never flinched — even after a 1-10 first season — and never stopped believing in his blue print for success at the University of Wisconsin.

By establishing a solid foundation, adhering to fundamentals and demanding an uncommon toughness from his players, Alvarez became the architect of three Rose Bowl triumphs in the `90s and became the school's all-time winningest football coach. While changing the culture of the sport on the Madison campus, raising expectations to heretofore unthinkable levels, Alvarez left an indelible mark on the Badgers during his 16 seasons on the sidelines. Not only did Alvarez take over a Big Ten footwipe and build the program into national prominence, but he sustained the success by sticking to a plan rooted to his upbringing in Western Pennyslvania and his exposure to three legendary coaches, Nebraska's Bob Devaney, Iowa's Hayden Fry and Notre Dame's Lou Holtz.

In his autobiography — Don't Flinch — Alvarez talks about the lessons that he learned from his mentors, the hurdles that he had to overcome as a young assistant and high school coach, and the challenge of taking over his own college program while living in a fishbowl, especially from his family's perspective. Alvarez maps out a strategy and game plan for young coaches who are seeking to achieve similar goals, and he also talks about his future as Wisconsin athletics director, and the future of college football.

5 out of 5 stars Hard work pays off........2007-02-19

A great read and refreshing to know that hard work, focus and the love and respect of family is still the formula for success.

4 out of 5 stars Coach with heart.......2007-02-16

Barry Alvarez grew up in a hard scrabble Western Pa town and learned life's lessons early. It also shows that while it may not have been an easy road, it can be done. This book contains many stories and messages for any young man thinking of taking the road of football beyond high-shcool. More so it holds a story of one mans philosophy of hard nose, stick to it, don't give up mentality as a kid coming up from nothing to make it in big time college football.

Barry Alvarez came from little but had a lot instilled in him by his family, his friends and his coaches as he came up the ladder from Pee Wee Football to College player and then to coaching. Those coaches and family/friends instilled in him that you can do whatever your heart desires if you work hard enough and don't fear sticking to your guns.

Great read for any football fanatic.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for football loving hubby!.......2007-01-18

My husband wanted this book for Christmas so I got it for him. He says it is one of the best books he has ever read. He is a diehard college football fan--but not necessarily a Wisconsin fan.

5 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes with the winningest coach........2006-12-08

To get a good biography of a sports figure you've got to go beyond the simple statistics of this game or that player and get some understanding about what this coach did or does to take a so-so team and make them the best.

And that's what you get in this book. As he talks about games, because that has to be included, he is also talking about the impact that other activities are having at the same time. Players are leaving, new players must be recruited, coaches are quitting or having to be fired, new coaches hired. Just playing the game is not enough, it's really more like running a business.

Furthermore these other activities have to take place at the same time that games are being played. More than most books, this one is able to interleave all of these activities together.

Alvarez stressed the basics, the fundamentals. But every coach does that. This book explains how he could do that while doing all of the other things that constitute building a whole series of winning teams.

5 out of 5 stars No Badger fan or college football enthusiast will want to miss reading "Don't Flinch".......2006-12-05

Barry Alvarez is one of the most successful and respected coaches in the history of Wisconsin's college football. He first hired on to take over the University of Wisconsin's substandard college football program with its lackluster collegiate support. What he created over the ensuing years was a UW football program that would win three Rose Bowl engagements in the 1990s and by the time he retired after the 2005 season ended, was one of Wisconsin's all-time success records as a UW football coach. Alvarez became so well respected that a statue in his honor now stands outside the UW football stadium. With the help of Mike Lucas, "Don't Flinch" is the autobiographical story of Coach Barry Alvarez and how he came to accomplish one of the most remarkable stories in college football history. A "must" addition to the Biography and Sports History collections for all Wisconsin community libraries, no Badger fan or college football enthusiast will want to miss reading "Don't Flinch", the truly remarkable, candidly personal and occasionally inspiring story of UW football coach Barry Alvarez!

Penzler Pick, August 2001: His previous thriller, Heartbreaker, was a smooth slam-dunk of a novel. Now Robert Ferrigno is back with his sixth book--and he's still making it look easy. Those who don't already know Ferrigno's work-- especially fans of Elmore Leonard, Daniel Woodrell, Robert Crais, and Carl Hiaasen looking to broaden their horizons--should check out this tale of sibling rivalry and serial murder in sunny, sinister Los Angeles.

Jimmy Gage, the hero, is a journalist, and a hard-working one. But when he's on the job, he doesn't cover school board meetings, mayoral press conferences, or even Lakers games. If a story doesn't have some angle that can sharpen his skewer, offering new ways to puncture the pompous, satirize the starstruck, or engineer an exposé, he'll move on to the next lurid opportunity. He's also a take-no-prisoners film reviewer, which is the same as being loathed and feared in a town where just about every dental hygienist has a script in turnaround. And in case these responsibilities are not keeping him busy enough, Jimmy writes a column slugged "Media Whore" for his employer, the wholly disreputable SLAP magazine.

Savvy readers probably won't be shocked to find beneath Jimmy Gage's jeering exterior a highly moral guy whose cynicism masks--as cynicism often does--an all-too-vulnerable romantic soul. Unfortunately, when a vicious serial killer calling himself "The Eggman" starts sending Jimmy boastful letters about his crimes, the police see it only as a tabloid tease set up by Jimmy himself.

Flinch is a terrific title for a story in which every character is an antagonist of at least one other. Why is Jimmy Gage sleeping with his brother's wife? And why is his brother making a strange set of Polaroids appear and disappear? Who is going to look away first? Whose self-control is out of control? You'll have to read it to discover the answer. --Otto Penzler

Book Description

Frightening, feral, and funny, Flinch is a fast-paced noir set amid the frenzied freak show of Southern California. Tabloid journalist Jimmy Gage and his plastic-surgeon brother, Jonathan, have long had a twisted and sometimes nearly fatal rivalry, but the ante was upped when Jonathan recently married Jimmy’s ex. So when Jimmy begins to suspect that Jonathan is the serial killer known as The Eggman, he’s neither surprised nor displeased. What ensues is this harried and hard-edged whodunnit that involves everything from petty porn stars to WWF wannabes to gut-wrenchingly gruesome gangsters and gang lords. Flinch is an intricately plotted whirlwind of a tale that will grip you until the very last page.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ferrigno is Fabulous!.......2004-09-22

This was one quick read for me, simply because I could not put it down. I had previously read Heartbreaker by Ferrigno & thought it was great, so I picked this up only to find it even better! Ferrigno is definitely going on my FAVORITES list & I plan to read all of his that I can get my hands on. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you love a stunning & clever thriller that does not let up until the final page!

4 out of 5 stars Finally, a Ferrigno character to love........2004-06-10

This book beats the hell out of Heartbreaker. I was so unimpressed with Heartbreaker that it took me several months to go around to Flinch. I'm not sure what happened to Ferrigno, but this book was so much better. Our hero, JImmy Gage, is great. Tough, tender hearted, and has great friends (who make great characters). Was a perfect story? No. The ending was a bit too neat, but I laughed, I cared and I look forward to the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Who is the Eggman?.......2003-04-21

There are hundreds if not thousand of thrillers out there about serial killers. Anyone familiar with the genre has probably seen it all, which makes the challenge greater for the really good authors. Fortunately, Robert Ferrigno lives up to the challenge with Flinch.

Jimmy Gage is a top-notch tabloid reporter back in town after a year abroad. Before he left, he received a letter from the Eggman, who purported to be a serial killer. After investigation, it appears the Eggman is only a hoax, and by the time of Jimmy's return, the crimes remain unsolved. By accident, however, Jimmy stumbles upon evidence that the Eggman might be his brother, a sibling he has had a rather strained relationship over the years (not made any better since the brother married Jimmy's ex-girlfriend).

This might make for a rather routine novel, but at times, the Eggman story is merely incidental as Jimmy copes with the other characters in his life including a loan shark, her dim-witted bodyguard, a crippled but still deadly fence/drug-dealer and his lethal assistant. Like an Elmore Leonard novel, the characters and how they interact is as important as the plot. And also like Leonard, there is a dark humor that amuses but does not diminish the suspense.

If Ferrigno has a fault as a writer, it is only that he sometimes takes a while to produce a new novel. Other than that, Ferrigno is consistenly great, and this book continues his string of quality work.

5 out of 5 stars 4 1/2* Orange COunty, Painted Noir.......2003-04-15

"Flinch" is a fast-paced mystery detailing a cat and mouse game between a low-rent journalist and his brother, a high priced plastic surgeon who the journalist suspects of being a serial killer. The title refers to the relatively innocent sado-masochistic games of their adolescence, magnified in the present to deadly proportions.

Ferrigno writes in an updated noir style, using crisp dialogue, oversized villains, and the sleazy/glitzy settings in Orange County, California. Although writer Jimmy Gage has the requisite cynicism and a balance of fair play and tough defiance, he's not strictly out of the Sam Spade mode either: His sense of moral outrage is a bit askew, and he doesn't always use the best of judgment. Additionally, the novel contains some very graphic violence, more gruesome than the traditional style.

The novel moves briskly, unimpeded by the several minor characters and related subplots. Other than a romance with Detective Jane Holt that develops a little too quickly, the plot twists are both plausible and genuinely surprising. Ferrigno captures the outrages and pretenses of Southern California without stereotyping. Much better than his more famous "The Horse Latitudes," Ferrigno has written a brisk and believable story that grabs your attention from the first page.

The characters were engaging. This was a nice read and a wonderful follow-up. The story wasn't too long and it never missed a beat. It was humbling that Kyla finally found comfort in her own skin after all of her trials.

With so many new or unheard of African-American authors on the scene with books of all genres and subject matters---the proof is out there that almost anyone can write a book. However, it takes true talent to tell a story. Nikki Rashan's got what it takes.

You Make Me Wanna... definitely keeps your attention. Kyla is an engaging character who has an honest voice. The secondary characters -- David, Marlon, and friend Nakia -- added something extra to the tale, as the three characters deal with their own issues.

                    Book Description

Jack Vance is one of the best-loved storytellers in science fiction. Here, collected in one volume, is the Alastor trilogy: three classic SF adventure novels that are Jack Vance at his best. The Alastor Cluster is a sprawling system of thirty thousand live stars and three thousand inhabited planets. It is ruled by the mysterious Connatic, who sees all and knows all, but with five trillion people contained within such far-flung boundaries, sooner or later something is bound to give.Trullion: Alastor 2262 : An idyllic world where food is bountiful and the oceans are clear. World 2262 is in for a rude awakening. The Trill, the once-peaceful race that populates the waters of Trullion, are gambling their lives away in the planet-wide game, hussade.Marune: Alastor 933 : Though the Connatic knows all, there is one man of whom he knows nothing, one man who knows nothing of himself. Pardero is determined to find out who he is and what cruel enemy forced him to forget his own life. But when he finally returns home to Marune, World 933, the mystery only deepens.Wyst: Alastor 1716 : On Wyst, World 1716, millions of people live together in harmony, work only a few hours each week, and share the fruits of their labor equally. Wyst seems a Utopia. But the Connatic, knowing better than to take Utopia at face value, one day decides to investigatea decision that may cost him his life.

Jack Vance is one of the all time great authors in any style. His writing sparkles like a bright mountain stream that twists every which way but always knows where it is going. He creates highly imaginative worlds that come alive to the reader and peoples them with characters that are as real as the folks next door. Alastor was the first I read and is still my favorite but all three are great!

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Jack Vance- highly recommended!.......2003-06-30

This collection of 3 novels shows Vance doing what he does best- creating detailed & exotic worlds with unconventional social systems, and telling an engaging story through interesting characters.

'Marune' finds a man without a memory- he slowly learns who he is, and who had stolen his mind and why. The answer leads him into Machiaviellian intrigue in a remarkable land of subtle noblemen.

'Trullion' is a water world with a mania for a competitive sport known as Hussade- and Glinnes Hulden has more to worry about than keeping his team together. All is not well among the deceptively tranquil islands.

'Wyst' is a look at a perfectly egalitarian society that is by no means a Utopia. "The trouble with Utopia is people".

This book is worth the price for the settings alone- Vance is the best creator of imaginative and vibrant worlds. The plots are interesting as well- icing on the cake. Vance is a master science-fantasy stylist.

                    4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2002-09-25

Alastor is a compendium of three novels set in the same science fiction universe: Trullion:Alastor 2262 (first published in 1973), Marune:Alastor 933 (1975), and Wyst:Alastor 1716 (1978). The name Alastor refers to a political entity of 3000 worlds comprising trillions of humans all ruled by the Connatic, a benevolent autocrat. Each story is centered on a particular world of Alastor, each with its own peculiar customs, a staple of Jack Vance's writings.

Trullion is the weakest of the three stories. Unlike most of Vance's stories, this one never captures the attention of the reader. The wrap up of the murder mystery that is central to the plot is unconvincing as are some of the more arcane plot twists.

It should be mentioned that the plot outline of Trullion in the book description above, as well as on the back of the book itself, bears little resemblance to the actual plot. Trullion is about a man who leaves his home to serve in the Connatic's space navy and returns years later to claim his rightful inheritance.

Marune is a typical Vance story. The protagonist is a sympathetic character and the world of Marune contains all of the bizarre social conventions that one expects from Vance. My only complaint is that he pulls a deus ex machina to resolve the story.

Wyst is a blatant critique of communism. Vance has a grand time ridiculing the inherent contradictions of a society that attempts to enforce a radical brand of 'egalism'. One aspect that makes this story unusual is the personality of Jantiff Rovenstroke, the protagonist. For much of the story Jantiff is a weak willed, unsympathetic, character. Towards the end, he is forced to fend for himself and surprisingly demonstrates much ingenuity and self-reliance. This transformation makes Wyst the best of the three Alastor stories.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-09-10

I've already read this 3 times and it just keeps getting better and better.

The book contains 3 stories and each one though not as good as some of his other novels is still better that most any other authors. I very highly recommend it.

jack vances instalment about marune depicts a very strange culture, where the process of eating ist compared to the process of defecating and therefore done only in toiletlike compartments and alone. also musick is to be despised since it is uncontrolled emotionality. You need to have your emotions in check in the culture of the rhunes. this also applies to sexual practices, which indeed are exercised sweating and grunting, like swine and therefore must be banned. to propagate the race it is necessary to wait for absolute night when none of the suns or moons of marune is visible in the heavens. this period af absolute darkness is called "Mirk" and this is the time when the male rhune dons a bodyconcealing mask, that leaves only the gender uncovered and sneaks und lurks in secret passages to catch any female unawares. yet the rhunes posess other qualities, they are constrained courteous, distant and edeucated in their cogences, fields of sience or craft in which they excel.

vance is forever looking for aristocratic lifeforms with or without poultroonery, buffoonery and comes in this book and in others to the sad conclusion, that true aristocracy does not exist.

the main character of this story, Padero, finds himself stranded on a backward planet. His memory stolen by an unknown enemy for an unknown reason...

                        Who is he ? A fugitive, a criminal or a victim ?

For better or for worse, Padero has only two things to live for... the first is to regain his memory and the second to seek revenge !

This, and the other Alastor novels - Wyst & Trullion - are without any doubt his finest work !

I'm convinced the sport that Jack Vance invented in this book will be played some day. The building up of a great team from an embarassingly bad one is fascinating enough, but the way the plot is woven into a subtext is pure Vance magic. The wry wit of Jack Vance is exemplified by the team's sole female member. When the opposition catches the gold ring at her end of the field, her clothes fall off! Who but Jack Vance would have thought of that.

Jack Vance should be considered a great writer by any standards. His command of the lanquage is incredible. His ability to create new worlds, customs and characters is fantastic. The books in this omnibus are among his very best! High praise indeed.

5 out of 5 stars A truly "essential" writer of our time.......2005-05-11

The "communication society" in which we live submerges us with raw information in terms of numbers, dates, facts and figures. The net result is that our mind becomes cloged.

More than ever, it is necessary to harmonize information with real knowledge.
Only few writers of our epoch have the gift of combining pure information and pure wisdom. Ananda Coomaraswamy is one of them.

The writings collected by his son, the noted Christian traditional theologian Rama Coomaraswamy, constitute an outstanding instance of how to apply an immense erudition to the service of truth.
This stimulating book demonstrates that Ananda Coomaraswamy is one of the few truly "essential" writers of our time.
