Book Description
Marti Leimbach’s first novel, Dying Young, was called “a masterpiece of details that always ring true, with the sad, funny and fascinating unpredictability of real life.” With the same talent and perception, Leimbach’s new novel takes the reader to London, to the home of the Marshes: Stephen Marsh, a true Brit; Melanie, a transplanted American; and their two children, four-year-old Emily and Daniel, just three. When it is conveyed that Daniel is autistic, the orderly life of the Marsh family is shattered.
Melanie is determined to fight to teach Daniel to speak, play and become as “normal” as possible. Her enchanting disposition has already helped her weather other of life’s storms, but Daniel’s autism may just push her over the brink, destroying her resolute optimism and bringing her unsteady marriage to an inglorious end. The situation is not helped by Stephen’s far-from-supportive parents, who proudly display the family tree with Melanie’s name barely penciled in, and who remain disconcertingly attached to Stephen’s ex-fiancée, a woman apparently intent on restaking her claim on Stephen. Melanie does have one strong ally in Andy, a talented and off-the-wall play therapist who specializes in teaching autistic children. Andy proves that Daniel is far more capable than anyone imagined, and Melanie finds herself drawn to him even as she staggers toward resolving her marriage.
Daniel Isn’t Talking is a moving, deeply absorbing story of a family in crisis. What sets it apart from most fiction about difficult subjects is the author’s ability to write about a sad and frightening situation with a seamless blend of warmth, compassion and humor.

Couldn't put it down.......2007-09-19
I literally opened up this book and couldn't put it down. I finished it at 3am and loved it. I have a son with autism and this book spoke to me in many ways. I hope they make a movie from the book- it reads like one.
FIVE STARS and Thanks Marti!
Not if you're looking for some help on autism.......2007-07-11
My new neighbor dropped off this book for me after reading it and also -- coincendently -- finding out that my 10 1/2 year old son is autistic.
As a mother of an autistic child I typically read two types of books: straight non-fiction on autism, epilepsy, brain development or structure, etc. Anything to help me understand my son more. The other type of book I usually read is completely escapist fiction. And when I read that type of book I'm looking to escape into a happy place. Like a little vacation without having to leave the house. So I read this with some trepidation.
I was really afraid that going through everything all over again with Melanie (the protagonist) would dredge up all those bad feelings from the time up to and right after my son's diagnosis, but it didn't. Instead I found myself wondering whether the U.K. is really that backward.
Melanie's experiences with doctors and therapists who just didn't "get" how to handle an autistic child had me flipping to the front to check the publication date (2006). I'll admit that I got a bunch of wrong diagnosises before my son was correctly diagnosed as autistic, but once that was the case, I was presented with strategies such as ABA, Positive Behavioral Supports, "Floor Time", GFCF diet, picture charts and social stories. I know first hand how expensive autism can be, but I was also wondering about the healthcare system in the U.K. where Melanie was spending hundrends of pounds (sterling) on an orthepedist, neurologist, etc. Doesn't the government or her healthcare plan pay for that? I know I paid for the chiropractor and other alternative practioners out of my own pocket, but the mainstream doctors were paid for by my healthcare plan, minus the co-pay.
In addition, after reading some of Temple Grandin's writings about being autistic, I do not agree with a specific paragraph on page 250 of the paperback version that starts: "Some mothers appear to make a badge out of autism, behaving as though it is not a disability but a `difference' and that we shouldn't be seeking to cure these children." Temple Grandin has said that being autistic is part of who she is and does not wish to be "cured". I do not want to "cure" my son; I want to give him the tools to function in this world effectively without taking away who he is.
Finally, I really (REALLY) had a problem with Melanie's romance with Andy. I thought it was really unprofessional and unethical for a sexual relationship to bud between a therapy provider and the mother of his (child) patient. I also felt that I would have been happier with an ending where Melanie fully came to rely on herself instead of the Hollywood ending where the wonderful man who knows the most about what Daniel needs also falls in love with and takes care of Daniel's poor, abandonded mother. What if that practioner had helped Daniel, but been short, fat, balding, old, etc. and put the moves on Melanie? In the real world she may have felt pressured to respond so he would continue to provide the services Daniel so desperately needed, yet she was out of funds to pay for.
But if you read it all with a grain of salt, it's a quick, entertaining read, and Daniel's autism is text-book.
Good airplane book........2007-06-28
I bought it at the airport to read on a Transatlanic flight and it served its purpose. It's basically the story of a woman who never accomplished anything in her life other than to become a wife and mother, who is rescued out of one life crisis by a handsome rich guy who turns out to be superficial and shallow and then is rescued out of another by a less superficial and shallow other guy. Kind of girl meets convenient boy, girl loses convenient boy, girl meets even more convenient boy. And of course, the autism thing. There's a girl child and a boy child and the boy has autism. The end.
What a disappointment!.......2007-06-03
My husband's usually-spot-on ability to pick books for me failed him with "Daniel Isn't Talking" in a big, big way. When I was on page 7, my young son asked my opinion of the book, and I responded, "So far, I don't like it, because I don't like the main character, so it's hard to care what happens to her." Alas, this feeling only increased as the book went on, and only dogged determination saw me through to the end of the book.
I found Melanie, the main character, to be thoroughly obnoxious. She is nastily critical of most people in her life (e.g., her husband and virtually all of his family), and her son's diagnosis with autism and her consequent leap into self-appointed expert of all things autism-related, made her just that much more insufferable to me -- apparently, disagreeing with Melanie is itself a character defect, since only those who agree with her are painted sympathetically.
I found the description of her marriage to be thoroughly emotionally unbelievable. Her husband is painted as a self-obsessed (albeit smolderingly handsome) slimeball from Day One, and Melanie comes out of the gate being totally contemptuous of him, yet we are supposed to follow along as she pleads incessantly for his return for the bulk of the book. Huh?
It seemed clear to me that the author intended for us to see Melanie sympathetically, but I just couldn't get there. She seemed mean (e.g., stabbing a metal umbrella point into her husband's foot and then "joking" about it) and completely lacking in self-insight (later, when her husband mentions his problem with her temper, she scoffs, which struck me as a rather stunning thing for an umbrella-stabber to do). She seemed shrill and diva-like, playing poor while living on her high-income-husband's dime and waxing hugely self-righteous about things like buying expensive items like raw goat's milk and super-premium no-dairy chocolate.
From glancing at a few of the reviews here, it sounds like this book really rings a bell for those who have experienced having a child with autism, and I'm glad for them that this is so. For me, though, the only bell this book rang was like the annoying, please-make-it-stop blare of tinnitus.
Overwhelmed by life.......2007-04-30
Melanie is overwhelmed by life particularly since her son isn't talking at age three. Daniel is also not playing with toys but carrying a train around and lining up the videos cases. Her husband is blind to these differences which only makes Melanie more absorbed in her son's delays. Her daughter Emily is normal and perfect which causes her husband's to hold his attention on her. The story revolves around Melanie's attempts to get help for her autistic son, Daniel, when help wasn't available. Amazingly Melanie does triumph in getting help for her son but loses her husband who is in abstract denial. The story is modeled after the author's own fight to help her autistic son.
As a grandmother of a child with autism, the book was difficult to read at times and brought out many feelings, good and bad. However the book is about a mother achieving what she felt was needed for her child and we can only hope all mothers can do the same.

Love, Love, Love this Saga!.......2007-07-05
What can I say? Steve and Ginny...I read this book when I was a teen in the 70's. I am still an avid romance reader, and have not found another to compare. I've read it hundreds of times throughout the years, and still enjoy every word.
There are a lot of critics who complain of the violence and such, but you have to consider the time period, both of the book AND when the book was written. It takes place in the 1860's Southwest and Mexico...things that took place in the book could have very well happened during that time period. Steve and Ginny survived against terrible odds, which only added to their character growth...which is what a character driven romance is supposed to do.
This is and will be my all time favorite romance. Sweet Savage Love (as well as the other books in the saga)are fast paced, historically accurate, and hot, hot, hot.
HATED some parts but this books deserves 5 stars!.......2007-06-29
This book was written almost 30 years ago?!! I was astonished when I read that, because this book reads like a modern day book, a VERY well written modern day novel.
I must admit, I hate romance novels with bad hero/heroines and after reading the reviews here, I almost passed on it. Well let me tell you, I am glad I tried it. Up most, what you gotta keep in mind is, this can NOT be considered a "romance" book.. you'll HATE it if you start this book thinking that. You must have an open mind, know that in this book you'll see the heroine abused horrible again, and again... rape, kipnap, horrible hero who cheats EVERY other day ( I swear ), and the heroine puts up with it. This makes it the worst, where was her pride? Yep, typical 70s book. I remember one scene, SPOLIER HERE :
After the hero kidnaps the heroine, he takes her to a whore house to hide her, he then goes to another room to shower and to have sex with one of the girls and the heroine is right next door, he then comes in the room see's she's been crying, asleep... he thinks about having sex with her too, right after having sex with a whore... that pissed me off! LOL, yes, horrible hero, and there were many many scenes like this here, he was a male slut!
END SPOILER:
There are so many reviews here so read those for plots I wont go into that... You will enjoy this dark "fiction" novel with a dark hero and a beautiful heroine who will do anything and put up with anything for her love for this undeserving hero ( imho ). That part drove me nuts...
Nevertheless, this book deserves 5 stars because I was thoroughly entertained, i seriously could NOT put this hateful, woman degrading novel down, I became addicted to this epic novel mid way. There are so many twists, so many awful things the hero does and the heroine goes through that will make you grind your teeth and yet, YOU will sit there losing sleep because you just gotta read another page....
IT WAS THAT GOOD.. Yes, I hated this book as a female reader but damn, what a novel.
A Classic.......2006-12-14
I read this book after picking it up at a garage sale. It is a beautifully written story. The author is so talented that the reader is transported into the characters' world. It is rare that a reader experiences the gamit of character's emotions. This book is truly a jewel.
The Best.......2006-11-07
My mom told me that she read this book when she was in high school and couldn't put it down, so when I read it I was pulled into the book, by the great characters of Steve & Ginny. While you read you'll want to throw the book across the room, but won't because you want to keep reading. It is a good western historical romance with good heros and villians and I recommend it to anyone who likes historical romances.
Steve and Ginny....the best.......2006-08-08
I first read this book when I was 16 and it started my love for historical romances. I recently read SWEET SAVAGE LOVE again and once more became a huge fan of Ginny and Steve!! This is my favorite book my Rosemary Rogers. I still recommended this book for any historical romance reader!

No sweetness OR love, but plenty of revolting savagery.......2005-09-13
Fans of Steve and Ginny hoping for equal passion with their now-grown daughter Laura will be disappointed. As a heroine, she's spoiled and brainless and I frankly didn't like her. She has no character traits with which to sympathize and neither does the hero.
My main complaint is that there's little passion and still little romance although Rogers describes scenes of rape and sexual torture in loving detail. Although I'm not anti-lesbian, I prefer to see the heroine having sex with the hero rather than her female friends. This book left me feeling like I needed a bath and the violence is the stuff of nightmares. Avoid, or buy used!

Book Description
In this first volume of The Gene Wars , C. J. Cherryh creates a universe where two interstellar empires, scarred by nanotechnology weaponry, hover in an uneasy détente. The fate of these worlds lies in the hands of one man: a prince and a warrior named Marak.
Marak has always hidden his ଡdnessߜ'96 voices and visions that beckon him toward a silver tower. When betrayal brings him face to face with the dictator of his world, the mysterious Ila, Marak is assigned a seemingly suicidal mission to cross his planet's vast desert and find that tower.
Miraculously reaching his goal, he is given another, even more impossible mission by the beings within the tower itself: lead his people to safety before the deadly hammer of Ila's enemies falls.

tedious.......2007-09-02
I've enjoyed several of her other books but this was just tedious. I liked some of the characters but the plot was largely predictable. The few surprises were surprises only because they were illogical. Much space is given to dense descriptions of irrelevant incidents.
If you want to read a great Cherryh novel about a long abandoned colony world with a gripping plot skip this and read Cloud's Rider (or Rider at the Gate, I forget which comes first).
A huge disappointment from one of my favorite authors.......2007-01-06
I have read and enjoyed many of C.J. Cherryh's works; a quick count on my fingers (yes, I have a lot of fingers) puts me at over 30 of her books. Of which I have greatly enjoyed about 80% of them, including all of the Foreigner series, the Chanur series, and all (or at least, most) of the Union/Alliance series. But nobody is perfect, and Ms. Cherryh has shown on a few occasions that she can miss in a big way. This is one of those occasions.
I give her credit for striking off in new territory and not getting stuck in the same old rut. And the story is extremely well-told. It's just that this is not a story worth telling. The setting is a dry, sterile, and hostile world, and everything about the book is permeated with the same austerity. There is no luxury here -- nothing to sink yourself into and enjoy, or make you want to race ahead to see what comes next. The characters are undeveloped, the world they live in is lifeless, and the "adventure" they undertake is monotonous in the extreme. Unfortunately, reading this book I felt every bit of the tedium that her characters must have felt, and had to force myself forward at each step. Perhaps this was intentional, to let us empathize with their suffering?
Even the "big surprise finish" was not much of a surprise, because it was handled in such a matter-of-fact way, with most of the characters simply grudgingly accepting the change in their world, and continuing with their tedious existence.
The question for me now is, out of respect for what Ms. Cherryh is capable of, will I go on with the second book in the series? It seemed, at the end of this book, as if they were just reaching the point where something actually interesting could begin to happen. So perhaps the second book will be better, and the first can just be taken as an exceedingly long prologue.
(Plot synopsis and spoilers follow.)
On a harsh desert world, an adventurer and rebel suffers from a form of madness that draws him further into the uncharted desert against his will. He is captured and brought before the world's immortal ruler, who charges him with leading a caravan in the direction his madness takes him. The vast majority of the book is filled with descriptions of multiple tedious desert crossings, and the constant pounding of the voices in the protagonists head. Eventually it turns out that the world's leader fled to this world after a losing engagement in an ancient war with non-human enemies, and used her genetic engineering skills to adapt human and animal life to the inhospitable planet. After many generations, others of her race have pursued her here, to force her to justice, enforce the bargain struck with their ancient enemies, and save what little they can of the world. The people of the world, who have been living here so long that they have no recall of their origins, must accept the change from a simple desert existence, to being refugees from a technological alien war that they know nothing about.
From that synopsis, it seems as if it should be an exciting book, but I felt about as much enjoyment and excitement as the people repeatedly marching back and forth across the desert.
Trekking thru the desert... and again..........2006-02-21
Ms. Cherryh's Hammerfall is a new universe for her. As normal, Ms. Cherryh takes on new technology, in this case, nanotechnology, and describes what the possible impacts could be to people. In this tale, the main character (Marak) is hearing voices. Because of this he has been sent to the Ila (a god like being) who has required that all of the "mad" be gathered and sent to her city. Unbeknownst to Marak, these voices are due to his body having nanites placed into him. The basics of the story is that Marak is commissioned obey the voices and to take a caravan out into the desert and go where the voices require him to go.
Ms. Cherryh's culture this time reminded me of an Arab culture, similar to The Faded Sun series. Parts of the culture is nomadic, others are city dwellers. There are caravans and animals that are similar to camels. The actions and the relationships between characters is very similar to the stories one can read about Arab cultures circa the 1300's.
While I'm normally very excited to read a CJ Cherryh book, this one lost me about half way thru. The first half is very good and I enjoyed reading about the trek across the desert, however to much of the second half was contrived and a repeat of the first half. Because of this, I have to rate this one only worth 3 stars.
Piqued my interest just enough to read.......2005-11-24
This book was interesting, but somewhat predictable. If you don't mind having some mental telepathy involved in your book, then it was a good read. The story kept me reading, despite the lack of intense action.
Good but different.......2005-02-10
This book seems a bit different than most of her stories, but you will be glad you read it when you read the next in the series wich is set centuries in the future from this story. Then you will see how it fits with her work.

the best way to start the day.......2006-07-25
This is a little gem of a book that I read often and have given as a gift at least 1/2 dozen times. It is inspriational and ideal you want to have more on your mind than the minutae of the day!
Great little book, very thought-provoking.......2004-09-02
Along the lines of thought-a-day or Daily Word publications, this small book has 100 pages of quotes and inspiration. The book is NOT religious, or even overly spiritual. Its quotes are drawn from mystics (Rumi, Tao philosophy) and non-mystics (John Updike, Bill Moyers) alike. Following each quote is a suggestion to apply the idea to your life that day. Some are active suggestions (make a self-portrait), while some are contemplative (find the extraordinary in the ordinary), while others are applied all day long (throw caution to the wind).
An example:
4 -- Try Not to Panic
"I will try not to panic, to keep my standard of living modest, and to work steadily, even shyly, in the spirit of those medieval carvers who so fondly sculpted the undersides of choir seats." - John Updike, quoted in "Life" magazine
"Act today without expecting to receive any recognition or reward in return."
Each of these little gems is a good point for contemplation or even meditation. None what you'll find here is new to the world, and much of it is repeated in multiple sources. Nonetheless, the quotes and ideas are thoughtfully collected and amount to a portable collection of inspiration. The introduction is as valuable as the rest of the book in reminding us to feed the soul daily. Highly recommended.
