"PerfectBound e-book extra: Coldheart Canyon: The Revelations Interview A famous Hollywood actor loses his looks - and is drawn into the dark and twisted world of Coldheart Canyon. Following extensive cosmetic surgery, Hollywood superstar Todd Pickett needs somewhere to hide away while his scars heal. His manager finds the ideal location, Coldheart Canyon - a dream-palace hidden away in a corner of the city so secret it doesn't even appear on a map. In the '20s, `A' list stars came to the Canyon to have the kind of parties nobody was supposed to know about. It wasn't just the wild sex and the drugs that made Amorette's parties so memorable. There was a door in the bowels of the dream-palace, which reputedly opened onto another world - the Devils' Country - where nothing was forbidden. Nothing. With his refuge now a prison, Todd needs to get out of Coldheart Canyon. But to do that he must not only solve its mysteries but also face the powers that have protected it for seven decades, and that means stepping through the door. As a Hollywood insider with a keen eye for its idiocies and horrors Clive Barker is uniquely positioned to write this vitriolic Tinseltown ghost story. Coldheart Canyon is an irresistible and unmerciful picture of Hollywood and its demons, told with all the style and raw narrative power that have made Barker's books and films a worldwide phenomenon. 4 out of 5 stars Despite what some might say..........2007-08-17

This is the first Barker book I've ever read. I understand that some people think its far too sexually graphic at times, but I don't think that those scenes really distract too much from the larger story. The first few chapters are slow... dead dog, face lift, etc. But once Todd gets to Coldheart Canyon, the story really starts moving. I read in two days at work. I found it engaging and I was almost sad to finish it. Its a good book, and it even rekicked my love of silent films.

I'm giving Barker another go, with 'The Inhuman Condition' this time.

2 out of 5 stars Very silly book.......2007-06-18

Not a masterpiece, not incredibly awful---just a mildy entertaining piece of fluff. It occurred to me early on that this book is nothing but a beach read. There's nothing here to challenge your mind. Good book for a long train ride or the ICU waiting room.

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievably bad.......2007-03-08

This is the first Clive Barker novel I read. I hated it. It reads like it's a pure Hollywood story. Also, the events in the story are so nonsensical, I couldn't help but continuously think, "This is stupid."

I love horror novels, but this isn't much of a horror novel. I'll never read another Clive Barker book.

Added on 2007/03/24: I forgot to mention. This book is huge. 686 pages. At around 3 different points in the book, I thought, "Ok now it should end." Yet it kept dragging on. Bleah.

I can't recommend this book for anyone. I guess diehard Barker fans would like it.

1 out of 5 stars Clive, What happened to your talent?.......2006-07-24

I am a huge Clive Barker fan ever since I saw Nightbreed and bought Cabal the next day. Read most of his works and loved most. This book however shows that maybe Clive is losing it. The characters were unbelievable and the book was WAY too long. The whole angel thing really was dumb, and all the sex was not needed. I could not help but feel like I was reading a fluff romance novel, not a thriller. Dropping names and heavy sex scenes do not befit you Clive? He used the sex with the dead stuff as he has before...very unoriginal. So very disappointing...skip this one, your doing yourself a big favor.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificently written!.......2006-05-23

This book is truly a masterpiece! When a once famous actor becomes obsessed with his looks encounters an accident that would push him through a world that we all take for granted, what could be better?
Here is the basic plot of the story:after having surger to fix his face,Todd was disfigured instead,at least temporarily.Needing a place where he could hide from the public and heal, his manager finds him a place. While there his manager makes know to him that she is leaving the job and will find him a new one.But before he knew it he was engulfed into a world of ghosts and hypnotised by katya, the former owner of the house who is still beautiful as she was when young!............

You see,Katya was an actress long before Todd. And her agent bought her a tile design. This design had "powers" when had a different effect on different people...It kept some young for example Katya...This is how she is able to be with Todd in spite of her age...
But there were other people whom Katya allowed to use her "tile room",at least for a while and these people who died became ghosts which haunt the canyon...The ghosts wanted to be let into the house to see the room, hoping it would help them in some way but they were denied entry by a spiritual force Katya installed by the doors of the house.
This is basically the main plot, there is alot more concerning the devil's wife Lilith. This book is truly a masterpiece. The only bad thing about this book is that it is difficult to put down!I wish that there could be a sequel to this...
The ending of this book is truly worth the wait,it could not be better!Just buy the book and read it,you wouldn't be disappointed, trust me...The people who are putting down this book don't know better and couldn't write a better book.Period

"AS BIG AS TEXAS is the second in the "Home to Loveless County" series, which takes place in the small town of Homestead, Texas. Two new characters are introduced, Kayla Price and Ethan Ritter. Kayla Price is a single mother with an asthmatic eight-year old daughter, Megan. Her ex-husband is not in the picture, having been a source of problems when trying to care for a child such as Megan, who needed special medical attention. She and Megan have just moved to town and have purchased land to start a vineyard. Ethan Ritter is living on a homestead parcel that once belonged to his family for over a hundred years, and now he's trying to make a living raising and training horses. Because of his personal history, he has vowed never to marry or to have children, because he feels his involvement with children would only be disastrous.

Kayla and Ethan try to resist falling in love but they are thrown together when they volunteer to help handicapped and mentally challenged children by allowing them to have horse riding lessons as a form of therapy. Kayla sees how good Ethan is with children, and her curiosity gets the better of her, as she wants to know what happened in Ethan's past that made him so good with kids, yet he continues to resist the idea of having a family". -- Complete review at BookLoons - M Lofton.

I enjoyed the story, especially the emphasis on their desire to help out handicapped children. A very touching story. Recommened.

5 out of 5 stars taut romantic suspense .......2005-11-05

Following her divorce Kayla Price, accompanied by her eight years old daughter Megan and her dad master winemaker Boyd, leaves Oregon to return to her hometown of Homestead, Texas because she sees a chance for a better life for her asthmatic child. The dying town is using the innovative Home Free program that provides people with a plot of land to get new and former residents to settle there. Kayla plans to open up the Stony Hill Vineyard here.

Though the incident that shaped him happened years ago, rancher Ethan Ritter still feels guilt for his part in Angela's death. Somewhat to ameliorate his disdain of himself he establishes a special riding program aimed at handicapped children. Kayla wants her daughter to join, but fears for Megan's health from the dust. Megan wants to join and own a horse. As Ethan and Kayla fall in love, they find in common their need to help others and each other. She assists him with his dark feelings and he tries to ferret out who is sabotaging her vineyard to the point of harming Megan.

Though the assaults add unnecessary suspense (the economics of a new business that will take three years for the vines to grow is a stronger showstopper), fans will appreciate the efforts of two adults trying to overcome an adversary while hoping to forge a loving relationship when neither originally wanted that. Kayla and Ethan are nice people struggling with an undesired attraction as their pasts haunt each. Her father and daughter and his elderly ranch hand pal enhance understanding of the demons that bite at the lead couple. Fans of contemporary ranch romances will want to read the latest visit to the misnamed Loveless County.

                Book Description

Others have written SF on the theme of im-mortality, but in The Boat of a Million Years, Poul Anderson made it his own. Early in human history, certain individuals were born who live on, unaging, undying, through the centuries and millenia. We follow them through over 2000 years, up to our time and beyond-to the promise of utopia and the challenge of the stars. A milestone in modern science fiction and a New York Times Notable Book on its first publication in 1989, this is one of a great writer's finest works.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great past, good future.......2007-07-22

Boat of a Million Years is an excellently written, very readable novel about being immortal. It is well connected; hard to understand some of the reviews below that suggest the book is a series of unconnected short stories. These people didn't continue reading, simply not giving the book time to sink in. Those wanting Highlander may not be satisfied here. It is not full of action (although there is some), but rather an encompassing perspective of what life might be like if one was immortal.

The early stories run chronologically, starting in early civilization and moving forward in time through the present and into the distant future. A few of the immortals connect throughout the book, but many, especially early in history, do not survive. This aspect of immortality, how to survive over long periods of time, is a key theme in the book, and Anderson excels with it.

I was a bit disappointed with the one story (Thule) that is set in the future. It is the only story in the future, and the time jump is very large. The technological and human changes are thus also very large. Not sure why Anderson didn't ease into Thule with some other stories to smooth the changes, as he did with the earlier parts of the book. In any event, although I found Thule to be a bit unsatisfying, it does have a very good ending.

I often find stories about immortality to be disconcerting, and a bit depressing. I don't much care for reading a detailed exposition about how essentially meaningless my short life might be. Even so, I very much liked this book; Anderson took on the immortal theme, and wrote a great science fiction book about it. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Blessed Be Death.......2006-08-30

Poul Anderson's "The Boat of a Million Years" certainly has a lot of promise and a very interesting premise, (as the amount of times things have been written or filmed about immortals stands testament). However, I would shy from saying that the book was excellent, though I did enjoy it.

The book basically follows the lives of various immortals as they change indentities and lives from around 310 BC up to the future, (in a chapter titled "Thule" and given the year "??"). As the immortals get older and older, some begin to search for others like them, driven in a large part by the loneliness, but developing into something more encompassing and far reaching.

Surprisingly, keeping track of these immortals over vast gaps in time and with changing indentities is relatively easy. This helps maintain continuity throughout the narrative. Anderson shows a great deal of skill in this, I thought, and it struck me as I am one who is easily lost in details of characters. I did not need to re-read any part at all to remind myself.

The book deals a lot with loneliness of living long and watching those loved mortals grow old and die. It also betrays a small hint of arrogance in the immortals about those same loved ones when they are old and diseased, (though not apparent in all characters). The motif of loneliness and death is rehashed a lot, and I found it bothersome and repetitive at times. There was a point where I honestly thought, "I get it!"

The book raises some interesting thoughts and questions some ideas that many have had. Poul Anderson has also developed the immortal being in terms of some physiological elements, such as renewing teeth and so on. They seem to have a hugely increased sense of lust, as well, interestingly enough.

In doing this, the book does not amaze with the action side of things, and does not entirely suit the genre of science-fiction. In that sense, it kind of bends the genres, so it should appeal to most tastes in some way.

Did this book wow me? Not really, I have to admit. However, I was not disappointed either. For what it is, it is a good read and a good attempt to cover a very wide range of time and places. For those interested in historical fiction, this book may have some ironic appeal, (despite the cover art).

It was an ok read, but not one that left me disappointed to reach the last page. And it certainly left me glad that I am mortal.

5 out of 5 stars Voyaging from Phoenicia to the Stars. .......2006-02-21

"The Boat of a Million Years " is one of the best novels written by Poul Anderson.
It is constructed as a series of short stories telling about immortal people (or almost immortal). The different characters crisscross their ways along centuries and millennia. The outcomes of these encounters are sometimes friendly, sometimes antagonistic; never innocuous.

Poul Anderson show his talent to mix action, drama and humor with deep meditations about meaning of life, ethics, gender conflict, ethnic discrimination and many subjects more. He includes accurate different historical backgrounds for each episode ranging from ancient Greece thru far future.

The story is great; it mainly follows Phoenician seaman Hanno in his eternal quest to find more people like him. He is very special. He never get sick or old, his teeth grows up again when he loose one, he recover very quickly from injuries.
He soon discover that his bless is also his curse. He remains unchanged yet consorts and descents grow old, die and vanish. Neighbors usually react violently to his "witchery" blaming him to practice strange deals with demons.
To evade these circumstances Hanno becomes a master in changing personalities and evading suspicion.
The narrative starts to catch momentum and conclude with a very interesting piece situated in a far future full of new possibilities.

Take a joyful romp thru it, you won't be disappointed!

BoaMY tracks the progress of eight immortals through millenia, focusing on their search for others of their kind. We meet them in ancient Rome, the American West, WWII Russia, and elsewhere. We glimpse their relationships with mortals and their continual need to keep their longevity secret. Standard "Highlander" flashback fare, right? Not really. Anderson introduces some interesting concepts into the mix - how does one cope with memories of millenia, how do you hide your lack of aging while those around you grow old, how would you seek out those like you? The last section of the novel travels even more deeply into the realm of science fiction as the band of immortals blast off into space in pursuit of E.T. intelligence.

The plot has its possibilities, but Anderson is no great writer. His purple prose really grates as he meticulously describes every single person in every single scene in great detail time and again. It's obvious that he's being flowery just for the sake of being flowery - to display his acquaintance with a thesaurus. I skipped entire pages that related the fabric and hairstyles of ancient peoples.

It's a good read, but ultimately forgettable. Don't expect too much.

2 out of 5 stars Not for Highlander Fans.......2005-12-15

The premise of this book is interesting; for some unknown reason a few immortals are born here and there around the planet. This is not so much a novel as a disjointed collection of vignettes and short stories that cover the centuries since ancient Phoenicia to a bizarre future where everyone is immortal. If you are expecting the derring-do and character development of the television series Highlander, skip this book. It drags unmercifully in parts, and is overall unsatisfying and (dare I say it?) boring.

                  ABSTRACT
Paleolithic type artifacts were found in southeastern Oregon on a hill overlooking a valley and basin that were covered by Pliocene Lake Idaho. Woodworking tools have been identified that probably were used in making dugout canoes and primitive log rafts. They would have been useful only when Lake Idaho was full and reached the artifact site. The Lake was filled approximately 8.5 to 5.5 million years ago, dried up for at least a million years, and then again was filled 4 to 2.5 million years ago. Surfaces of artifacts show two widely separated periods of time in which they were made and used. Because the artifacts apparently were made when the lake was full, the oldest are approximately 8 million years old and the youngest are over 2.5 million years old. Some types of tools are reported for the first time. Photographs of 230 artifacts include 860 in black and white and 17 in color.

In Brazil, there are archeological sites dating from 48,000 BC in the Northeast Region. The pre-historical people that lived in palaphits on the lakes of the "Baixada" Region of Maranhão State, plus the "Seven Cities" and "Capivara Mountain" Historical National Parks in the State of Piaui and "Lagoa Santa" in the State of Minas Gerais, are widely recognized presences of ancient men in Brazil much earlier than the North American sites. There are new thesis that men first came to the American from Africa to the Northeast cost of Brazil. And not from Asia through the Behring Strait or through the Pascoa Island in the Pacific. I think it is quite possible that we were in the Americas eight million years ago - why not ?

Alleged discovery of 3 to 8 million-year-old woodworking tools in North America stretches credultity beyond the breaking point. Archeologists are beginning to accept the possibility that there were humans in the western hemisphere as early as 50 thousand years ago, but even this is still controversial. The Clovis culture of approximately 10,500 BC is the earliest on which there is broad concensus. Even in Africa, the most primitive Olduwan stone tools are only 2.5 million years old or so.

"The Boat of a Million Years" is one of the best novels written by Poul Anderson (1926-2001).

The narrative increase momentum with each story and conclude with a very interesting piece situated in a far future full of new possibilities.

Take a joyful romp thru it, you won't be disappointed!

This book was given to me as a gift. It is such a joy. I've now purchased numerous copies myself to give as gifts also. We all need to learn the lessons written in this beautiful little book of taking time to enjoy life, whether it be with tea or even coffee.

I own a copy of this given to me by a friend who loves to drop by and share a cup of tea. I purchased a copy for my cousing for her birthday, also. The illustrations are wonderful and the lines of prose about tea and time spent with our friends make this the perfect little book to enjoy if you are having a quiet cup of tea alone.

This is a book mothers should give to their daughters. I regret all the years of my daughters' childhoods that I did not use the good china and teapots. We did share over a cup of tea but how much nicer to have used the teacups instead of the everyday mugs. I will definitely be having more teas with my granddaughters and using the recipes in this book.

I have been collecting books about tea time for a number of years. This book is my favorite of all of them. The illustrations are gorgeous, the entire book is a visual joy. It inspires us to put some ritual into our lives, to slow down, take time, enjoy beauty & calm, serenity, and one another. Another book that inspires in the same way is by Alexandra Stoddard, Living a Beautiful Life. Emilie Barnes encourages us to put the tea kettle on the stove to boil the water, which gives time to set a lovely tray, cut a fresh flower, do the things that delight the senses. The same goes for making fresh scones - there is time to do so while waiting for a friend to drive over. I love her idea of collecting a variety of tea cups & saucers, displaying them, and inviting guests to look over them all and select the one that delights them to use while enjoying the tea. The narrative simply adds to the pleasure of the book. There is something for everyone & all ages, for one or a crowd. If you can only get one book about tea, this is the one!
