Book Description

Inspector William Monk has his hands full when an aristocrat's daugher is stabbed to death in her own bed. He is instructed to proceed without delay, but finds his efforts hamstrung by the lingering traces of amnesia and the craven ineptitutde of his supervisor, who would love to see him fail. With the help of Hester Latterly, formerly a nurse with Florence Nightingale, Monk gropes warily through the silence and shadows, knowing that with each step he comes closer to the appalling truth....
"A richly textured, masterfully plotted, thoroughly enjoyable story."

3 out of 5 stars I'm mourning overkill.......2005-07-21

I was very impressed with the first book, Face of a Stranger, and expected to like the series. "A Dangerous Mourning" has a serious problem with pacing, and I don't require new drama on every page. But it goes on and on and on and on...retelling the same stuff, going over all the same ground. It's creditable that Monk is so persistent (even though he didn't solve the crime), but a few well written paragraphs could have summed up about 150 pages of this book. Perry doesn't seem to realize that verbatim interviews aren't necessary when characters just repeat what they've said before.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe all of the bad reviews!.......2003-05-27

This novel was thrilling from start to finish and it left me guessing until the very end. I do agree that the book had too much information in it that really had nothing to do with the story, but all in all this was a thrilling and entertaining read!

2 out of 5 stars End of the series(for me!).......2001-08-26

Having read the first "Monk" book, "Face of a Stranger," I was excited when I received this offering. The excitement didn't last very long. Regretfully, I got half-way through and couldn't pick it up again. Bogged down in too much non-essential, confusing detail.

1 out of 5 stars An Inspector Monk novel where someone else solves the case?.......2001-02-09

I found this book an utterly dreary bit of work. It is filled with incredibly two dimensional characters. As well as the fact that there are so many characters that none of them are done in any depth. And nearly all are sterotypes. All the ladies and gentlemen in the story are overly dimwitted. As does the hero of the book Inspector Monk. Who is truely baffled and wanders around asking the same questions over and over. It became quite boring after a while. The book slowed down to a crawl at times and desperatly needed some life in it. The fact that Monk really does fail to work out what was going on is very disapointing. Especially when compared to The face of a stranger. Which I did enjoy reading. The real heroine in this story is Hester Lattery. As she is the only one who really works anything out. Her being written into this novel I find dubious at best. My opinion is that she should have worked more with Monk and his assistant Evan both of who hold much potential as characters. There was also two much courtroom drama. Which in a mystery novel I find absolutly little need for. It was almost as if Perry was confused as to what she wanted to write. A mystery novel or a courtroom battle. I feel much of the courtroom was written so Hester Lattery had an enterence and no more than that. As the dealings of it have absolutly no relevance to this book.

The good part of the book is the plot and the setting. The ideas she has are good and interesting. The main characters are interesting and have alot of potential. They were just under used or poorly done this time round.

However I have not given up on her yet and I will read the third book Defend and Betray.

5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers for Inspector Monk.......2000-05-24

After seeing so many reviews on Amazon.com for the Pitt series by Anne Perry, I am somewhat surprised that there are not more glowing recommendations for the Inspector Monk series. True, Inspector Monk is not as likeable as Pitt and the stories are set in a slightly earlier period. But the stories! The characters! They are simply superb.

In this second book of the series, Perry uses her considerable skills as a writer and her fascination with the secrets people keep to great advantage in getting to the bottom of the death of Octavia Haslett, a young widow. In his efforts Inspector Monk is assisted by Hester Latterly, one of Florence Nightingale's Crimean nurses. We are also introduced to another marvelous character, Oliver Rathbone--a brilliant litigator and trial attorney. As Monk deciphers the meagre clues available to him he realizes that the murderer of Mrs. Haslett lived in her house, and may strike again. All fingers begin to point to a unlikeable footman, but Monk believes he has been framed and refuses to act on the instructions of Runcorn, his supervisor, who wants the case wrapped up due to pressure from the social and political elite who cannot abide the suggestion that one of their own might have committed the murder. Runcorn is certainly the boss no one would want to have, and in his fury he fires Monk who is forced to rely on the recently unemployed and also very outspoken Nurse Latterly to infiltrate Mrs. Haslett's home and find out the secrets within. By the end of the story Monk and Latterly are on different paths--Monk is heading up a private detective agency, and Latterly is serving as a private duty nurse. On to Defend and Betry to see if their new career paths work out!

If you like Inspector and Charlotte Pitt, give Inspector Monk a try. The psychological tautness of these novels is a nice change of pace!

                  5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-12-15

This is the first novel that I read by Maggie Shayne and fell in love with the author. It was a cute novel and I was able to read it in 2 days. Kara is a loving person, Tyler a wonderful child who breaks your heart, and Jimmy reaches your heart through his love for his son.

                  1 out of 5 stars A Dissapointment!.......2006-02-20

I picked this up hoping for a good book like Maggie's other stories but boy was I wrong! The love story is unbelivable and there are like no sex scenes at all which is a suprise because Maggie Shayne can write some pretty hot sex scenes but not a one in this one. Oh yeah about the book cover whoever done this book cover obviously had no idea what the book was supposed to be about they totally missed it, it had nothing whatsoever to do about Christmas!

1 out of 5 stars Feels Too Fake.......2005-12-05

This was a disappointment from such a well known author. Jimmy corona retunes back to his home town 10 years later and after 48 hours becomes involved with Kara Brand a shy, awkward girl he know from highschool who is now beautiful. He just uses her through out the whole book so she can become attached to him and he's son who has a disability. He just wants a Mother for his son. Finally 3 or 4 pages from the end Jimmy finally gets it and now loves her. Not a believable story at all. Plus, the cover gives you a Christmas theme feeling and that is not want this story is about. Don't bother.

                  Book Description

When the shipwrecked stranger washed up, nearly drowned, on the beach near research scientist Samantha Bryton's home, she was unaware that he was something more than human: an experiment conducted by Charon, a notorious criminal and practitioner of illegal robotics and android research. The man said his name was Turner Pascal-but Pascal was dead, killed in a car wreck. Charon is experimenting with copying the minds of humans into android brains, implanted in human bodies to escape detection, and plans to make his own army of slaves that will follow his orders without question. Samatha and Turner quickly found themselves on the run across the country, pursued by the most ruthless criminal of the twenty-first century. In desperation, Samatha decided to seek help from Sunrise Alley, an underground organization of AIs and androids that had gone rogue. But these cybernetic outlaws were rumored to have their own hidden agenda, not necessarily congruent with humanity's welfare, and Samatha prayed that her only hope would not prove a forlorn one. . . .

                  3 out of 5 stars It was a'right. A little fantastic.......2007-09-13

Sam, a 41 (female by the way), is a biotech researcher who is burned out. She inadvertantly rescues a man whose body is mostly biotech. This raises the ethical question is he man or machine? Inevitably there is an evil genius involved who wants Turner (her cybernetic boyfriend back).

This was an entertainingly light piece of work with some fun romantic elements. There were plenty of flaws though, as well. For instance, I found Sam the heroine to be a bit boring. She is petite, pretty, and mega-intelligent. I also felt she was a tad old for Turner (27). The cybernetics stuff was interesting, but soon went a little over the top with the car chases, cybernetic bees, and constant globe trotting. The lack of detail in the various new locations made parts of the novel unrealistic. The heroine's riches made the story less suspenseful. I found myself losing interest 3/4's through with the various parties vying for control of Turner. Turner himself seemed a wee bit over-powered and innocent.

Overall, an Ok read, but I've read better. Oh and the cover artist needs about 3 or 4 more years in figure drawing class. That is one fugly cover. 3 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but I like the Skolian Empire novels better.......2007-09-09

I enjoyed this story, but I'd rate it a little lower than the Skolian Empire novels that I've read. This story impresses me as more of a "B movie" type of story, but her Skolian Empire novels are definately "A" material in my opinion.

I don't mean to put down this story. It's well written and it held my attention quite well, as all of Catherine Asaro's novels have, but I just like the Skolian Empire stories better.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not as good as her other books.......2007-08-14

Sunrise Alley by Catherine Asaro is a book about artificial intelligence and androids that develop self awareness. What defines who is human? The main character, Samantha, is an AI researcher who becomes involved in a cross country chase with a man most people think is an AI.

It's not as good as Catherine Asaro's other series, the Saga of the Skolian Empire series. The Skolian Empire books are a romantic space opera with lots of good science and great character development. They weren't published in order (she wrote different books at different times) so I created a list of them in storyline order. The first one is Skyfall (Saga of the Skolian Empire) if you want to get going!

3 out of 5 stars Asaro's bleak view of the future between man and machine.......2007-04-09

For quite a few years now, the novels of Catherine Asaro have been recommended to me by various other readers of science fiction. I became more interested when I discovered that she had a degree in physics, and it seems, knew what she was talking about. That's always a plus, especially when it comes to creating a belivable fictional world.

The time is the near future, about 2030 or so, and Sam Bryton has fled to the quiet of the northern California coast to escape the more privileged world that she has lived in. Now she just wants to be alone in the redwoods, but that will change when a young man washes up on the beach below her home.

Turner Pascal is a mystery. He's had part of his body replaced by cybernetic limbs -- and part of his brain refitted with electronic matrices. He's unlike anyone or anything that Sam has worked with before, his abilities going far beyond the simple everyday cat-bots and mech-bots, and the more complex AI's and EI's that are begining to be developed. And his story is wilder than anything that Sam can believe.

Having run away from a mysterious entity called Charon, Turner is technically, and legally, dead, and now appears to be both man and machine. He has come to Sam to see if she can return him to his human state -- and if she can't do that, then at least see to it that Charon is stopped before he creates any more blends of humans and machines. The only place they know of to run to is the rumored Sunrise Alley, where robotics and androids are said to be in peaceful co-existance with humans. If it even exists.

But before Sam can actually do anything to help, sure enough, Charon is already making moves to have Turner back in his grasp. Soon, the novel turns into what I think of as a 'chase' story -- hero and heroine are on the run, stealing vehicles, being captured by and escaping from various bad guys, and get emotionally entangled before the requisite happy ending where all is resolved. While there are flashes of humor here and there within the story, the general tone is rather depressing -- and sadly, that leads to a rather stultifying read.

Sam is determined and spunky, not to mention young-looking and svelte for a woman in her forties. Indeed, she is so good at what she does that she skirts along into the dreaded 'Mary-Sue,' a thinly veiled avatar of the writer herself. Turner, for his part, is mostly a 'little boy lost,' and while it's interesting to see him growing and changing, he too quickly becomes a supercharacter, which is not that much fun to read about either.

Asaro can write a quickly paced thriller, and her use of modern cyber-science is certainly believable. While she does slide into 'explainitis' every now and then, she's able to keep most of the techno-babble down to a minimum, and does manage to create a world where machines and humans are starting to approach the same level of sophistication and communication. Asaro isn't afraid to explore some moral and ethical questions about cybernetics as well, which helped to create some depth to the story.

The sad part is that the story never quite seems to get above the lukewarm stage. Several extra characters have some interesting qualities and dispositions -- Charon's henchmen, Alpha and Hud, along with Sam's uncle, an Air Force general -- but they are certainly not enough to help the story move beyond what is a romance with science fiction trimmings.

And that's the real disappointment of this novel. It could have been so much more. Instead, Asaro took the cheap and easy way out. Pity, as I suspect that there is an author of some talent here, if she would only focus a bit more tightly on her story instead of sliding into old, tried plot tricks. What was especially annoying was the revealation of who Charon was, and it was at that point where the story fell apart for me, and I couldn't wait for it to end.

There is a sequel, entitled Alpha, that has been released in hardcover in September 2006, and due for mass market paperback in November 2007. Will I go so far as to read it -- after taking in the preview in Sunrise Alley, I'm rather doubtful.

Three stars, and a somewhat recommend.

Dr. Samantha "Sam" Bryton is one of the top in the biomech field. Unlike most research scientists though, Sam believed there were ethics even when dealing with EIs. There is a difference between AIs and EIs. AIs are artificial intelligence. Androids. EIs, however, are evolved intelligence. In this day and age, most humans are part biomech. As long as over fifty percent of the person remains human, the person is considered alive. But if the human is over half mesh, then the human is no longer considered human or alive. Unlike AIs, all EIs can evolve. The thin line deciding where humanity ends and mesh begins remains unknown. To Sam, EIs should be treated humanly. Sam "retired" from BioII when her husband, Richard, died due to experimental components used in creation of forma bodies.

One morning, after a storm, Sam goes walking upon her private beach to discover a shipwreck with one survivor, Turner Pascal. But records show that Turner died previously. She learns from Turner that he really did die, but he woke up to find himself in a lab and being experimented on by a mad man known as Charon. Charon is the most ruthless criminal of the twenty-first century. No one knows who he really is or what he really looks like. Sam and Turner find themselves on the run across the country, pursued by Charon. They seek help from an underground organization called Sunrise Alley. Thought to be only a myth, Sunrise Alley is an organization of AIs and EIs gone rogue. Those within Sunrise Alley grant Sam and Turner sanctuary, as well as, support. Problem is that the cybernetic outlaws have their own hidden agenda.

***** This book is written with a bit of SL Veihl's flavor. If you have ever watched and enjoyed the old movie "Logan's Run", then you will simply adore this tale. Sanctuary is for EIs, instead of humans over age thirty. This title is a stand alone story; however, one of the characters from this book, Alpha, has had her story just released as well. Be sure to look for it! If it is even half as enjoyable as this story is, you are in for a treat. Highly recommended! *****

Charon was the most ruthless-and brilliant-criminal of the twenty-first century, a practitioner of illegal robotics and android research. He is dead now, and General Thomas Wharington believes his team of experts has deleted all the electronic copies the megalomaniacal inventor created of himself. However, one major problem remains: Alpha,

the only android survivor of Charon's cybernetic empire. Outwardly indistinguishable from a human woman, Alpha has superhuman strength and speed, and perhaps even more deadly capabilities still unknown. Thomas's superiors want her dismantled and studied, but to Thomas it feels like murder. He stalls for time, a move that could prove disastrous. Alpha escapes from an escape-proof compound, kidnaps Thomas, and takes him to one of Charon's hidden installations. Charon might be dead, but Alpha continues to carry out her late master's orders, and she refuses to elaborate on what those orders entail. Her behavior is becoming more human-or so it seems. Is she developing emotions and a conscience, or is she just learning to counterfeit them as a means of carrying out her enigmatic orders? And do those orders include Thomas's death sentence?

Catherine Asaro's ALPHA comes from a Nebula-winning author and provides a sequel to her popular SUNRISE ALLEY, continuing the story of Charon, now dead, who was a brilliant criminal and practitioners of illegal robotics and androids. General Wharington believes himself safe - but one Alpha, the only android survivor of Charon's talents, remains, with her superhuman skills and deadly capabilities. His affection for her leads Thomas to some bad decisions, for Alpha kidnaps him and continues to carry out her late master's unknown orders in this riveting thriller.

The National Information Agency Director of the Office of Computer Operations Lieutenant General Thomas Wharington is elated that the major threat to world domination by the malevolent genius Charon is over as the villain is dead (see SUNRISE ALLEY). However, he also fears the threat to mankind remains viable as Charon's "offspring" the super brilliant android Alpha still lives to carry out her master's plan.

He needs to learn her secrets to neutralize her, but no sentient being can "read" body language as she can. This frightens and attracts Wharington, who finds his desire for the beautiful AI leading to mistakes. Alpha captures Wharington and takes him to Charon's secret island location. To his shock Wharington finds his worst nightmare awaits him.

Though there is an abundance of too many unsolved subplots left dangling, ALPHA is a terrific science fiction thriller that fans of Catherine Asaro will appreciate. The story line is fast-paced and can stand alone as the back story is somewhat summarized in the opening sequence. The Wharington-Alpha confrontation is deftly handled as both finds an attraction interfering with their respective prime directive though the android deals with it better. Readers will enjoy this saga and look forward to the meshing resolution of other threads.

While most Christians agree to seek purity and save sex for marriage, few have been given a blueprint for how that should affect their view of dating and love. In I Kissed Dating Goodbye, Joshua Harris exposes the "Seven Habits of Highly Defective Dating" and offers a realistic outline of how to have a biblical vision of marriage. Harris contends that one must begin with a new attitude, viewing love, purity, and singleness from God's perspective rather than thinking that love and romance are to be enjoyed "solely for recreation." In such well-named chapters as "Guarding Your Heart" and "What Matters at Fifty," Harris encourages the reader to look at one's character rather than reveling in infatuation, to regard love as a truly selfless, biblical act rather than a feeling. He refutes the concept that we are victims of "falling in love" (that it is beyond our control), saying that "God wants us to seek guidance from scriptural truth, not feeling. Smart love looks beyond personal desires and the gratification of the moment. It looks at the big picture: serving others and glorifying God." Before you roll your eyes, moaning that this sounds terribly unromantic, know that Harris does a superb job of couching his convictions in the sincere belief that if we are purposeful in our singleness and date with integrity, a fulfilled marriage awaits us--in God's timing. --Jill Heatherly

I found this book to be extreemly helpful and I think Josh does a great job at sharing his heart and helping people see the other side. I realize that there are many people out there who are very upset with this book and think the author is way out of line, but I also realize that people don't often like to hear things that are different from the mainstring of things. We don't like to be different and thought of as wierd.

I respect Josh and his honest approach on the subject of dating. I personally know many people who have been helped after reading this book. Some people think that Josh comes across in a harsh manner and is against dating. I didn't feel that at all after I read it. In fact, I have many close friends who have listened to Josh's advice and have gotten married. Probably in some people's mind they were extreem in how they dated, but they have been saved from alot of heartache. As I look at their marriages, I see them all still very much in love! They didn't do everything exactly like Josh did, but they found his advice very helpful. No book is perfect except God's Word, but we can learn from others. Whenever we read a book we need to read it with discretion.

Josh is very much for marriage and for dating God's way. He encourages people to get more serious about purity and thinking of the other person's best interest. Dating and getting involved physically is selfish love and not at all the way God has it planned. I was definately challenged in how I think.

I would encourage anyone to read this book. It is very well written, easy to read, and yet very profound. If you read it with the attitude you won't like it, I'm sure you probably won't. Just be open to God's voice and hear His message to you. Many of the principles Josh lays out are from God's Word. He has alot of valuable things to say, and I think if we are willing to listen we will learn alot. If you're a Chistian, ask God for wisdom as you read it! God loves to be involved in our lives, especially our love lives.

This is an excellent book for anyone who is interested in a serious relationship. It gives great advice and a way to honor God in all that you do and say. I would encourage all to read this book to get your dating life in order.

This book has haunted me as many other christian singles in their 20's. I personally think this book has contributed to the de-testical-ification of guys in the church. I know a ton of attractive women (they seem to outnumber the single men greatly) who are not happy about their singleness in the church only to be faced with 30 year old adolecents who are afraid or unwilling to ask them out. Thanks Josh! Well anyway, I am getting married in 10 days and I met my soon-to-be husband on a christian dating website so bollocks to Mr. Harris.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book ! Highly recommended........2007-05-26

If you are a Christian in America you need to read this book. It is absolutley great. Puts the whole idea of dating, romance, finding a mate through the lense of Scripture. You will be blessed by this refreshing book. After you read it you will be telling your friends about it and loaning it out!
