Yesterday Will Make You Cry, the story of a young man's brutal sojourn in prison, was first published in 1952 as Cast the First Stone. Author Chester Himes had intended to write a book based on his own prison experiences, but when publisher after publisher turned it down, Himes rewrote the text. He turned his third-person narrative into a first-person narrative, eliminated flashbacks, and toned down the sometimes poetic language. The revision became, so the new editors tell us, "a hard-boiled prison novel." Finally restored in the form of the original novel, Yesterday Will Make You Cry is the heartfelt book Himes would have had us read: it is occasionally brutal, always uncompromising, and sometimes harrowingly moving.

Book Description

A classic restored-the complete and unexpurgated text of a great African-American writer's brutal and lyrical novel of prison life. First published in reduced and bowdlerized form in 1952 as Cast the First Stone, Yesterday Will Make You Cry was Chester Himes's first, most powerful, and autobiographical novel. This Old School Books edition presents it for the first time precisely as Himes wrote it, a sardonic masterpiece of debasement and transfiguration in an American penitentiary and one of his most enduring literary achievements.

5 out of 5 stars I Cry For Today!!.......2007-05-29

This book was awesome, I cry not only for yesterday, but today!! You have to read it from the beginning and keep reminding yourself what the title says, it goes beyond the hip hop, urban street, hard core books it tells a beautiful story,it's life education in itself.U have to understand, this book goes beyond racism, and prison life,it tells a story which goes deep in everyone heart and soul, because everyone have or will have some thoughts & feelings of this story. I cried almost all the way thru the book, this character went thru alot. Sometimes, u never know what u will do thru life struggles, so were no better than the next person, but thru it all soone or later we go thru struggles and we all cry for yesterday and today.

2 out of 5 stars Tedious.......2006-05-29

Himes is an excellent writer, but Yesterday was tedious. Pales in comparison to some of his other 'unfooled around with' works. Still a Himes fan, but Yesterday is not worth the eye strain.

Yesterday Will Make You Cry: Why?
***

"It was the first night..., convict no. 57232 had been in the dormitory." This starts the whole thing. The author's purpose is clear, to put you in the zone of this book, but does it? Chester Himes' Yesterday Will Make You Cry is a novel that brings to life the way of life in jail.
Himes presents Jimmy Monroe, the protagonist into play with the realization of life in jail. He is hit with many obstacles, but doesn't know what to do. Himes present this story in a weird way.
The setting is very realistic. The protagonist has a problem with coming to the realization of it, "Top range,...a very cold block with small, grimy, and very cold cells."
Jimmy Monroe is a very complex character. One may not understand fully what's going on in Himes' mind when he created this character, but one must also keep in mind the title when you read the book at all times!

Himes present many flashbacks through Monroe, but fails to foreshadow at first. There is conflict between the whole story and the readers mind as well. One must not forget who the protagonist is because you will get lost.

Himes dos use some "big words" but, most of them tie in with the story. Some parts of this novel are simple, like every-day life talking, but the narration parts are more complex. "Before the fire, despite the fact of it's submergence beneath the level, endless, monotonous, unvarying, un-movingly eternal stretch," is an example of how Himes' really wants you to think.

This novel is an alright novel. One must keep in mind the "deeper meaning" or the "big picture" of some things. Read "between the lines." If the reader doesn't pay attention in the beginning, they will get lost later on in the book. Read the novel a couple of times to get the full meaning. One will find something new every time.

3 out of 5 stars yes, but...........2001-05-24

You know, I really wanted to like this book.... but, and perhaps this is beyond the pale given the novel's publishing history, it seemed to need an editor more than anything else, not for any of its themes, or subject matter, but for the prose itself: it's true that the language is often very evocative (and those moments are very good indeed--for example, when he describes the loneliness inherent in prison life), but more often it is clunky... not at all bad, but somewhat disappointing given the relative hype....

      5 out of 5 stars A Breeze to Read.......2004-05-29

Amanda Johnson is devastated when her dad loses the ranch she grew up on due to owed taxes. Scott Beringer, tycoon extraordinaire, pays the back taxes and purchases the ranch in order to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a cowboy.

Scott enticies Amanda to give him "cowboy lessons", by telling her he'll sell her back the ranch if it turns out being a cowboy isn't for him. Having no choice but to accept or lose the only chance at getting back the beloved ranch she grew up on, she gives him lessons in ridin' and ropin', learning along the way that Scott isn't the cold, heartless magnate she initially thought. In fact, she can't stop thinking about him at all!

Pamela Britton's writing style is breezy w/many humorous passages. COWBOY LESSONS is a fast read, and it was heartwarming to watch these endearing characters fall in love.

      4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2003-11-23

Amanda Johnson detests computer millionaire Scott Beringer who legally bought her father's spread, the Lazy Y Ranch, by paying delinquent back taxes. She wants Scott to leave while he needs to prove he can be an athletic geek if he can learn to become a cowboy.

Scott wants to be a cowboy. Unfortunately, four days a week in the gym tones muscles, but does not provide any prowess. Scott cuts a deal with Amanda. She provides him with cowboy lessons and he will sell her father's ranch back to her. Amanda agrees, but soon they both learn far more than they ever expected.

Author Pamela Britton pens a charming romance in COWBOY LESSONS. While the plot is familiar to all sub-genre fans, the marvelous cast of characters lends COWBOY LESSONS amusing originality and flair. Conflict isn't enough to keep this spunky couple apart, even as passion draws them ever closer. Amanda's father lends the novel a note of humor, setting this city slicker up for trouble. An entertaining afternoon's read, COWBOY LESSONS comes highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars lighthearted contemporary ranch romance.......2003-09-18

Scott cuts a deal with Amanda. She provides him with cowboy lessons and he will sell her father's ranch back to her. Amanda reluctantly agrees, not knowing that the dude will tie her heart in knots as he brands her with his love

Fans of contemporary ranch romances will enjoy the amusing lighthearted romp COWBOY LESSONS. The story line is similar to many sub-genre tales, but what makes it fun to read is the cast. The lead couple is a delightful pair struggling between an attraction and a dispute. Her father's feelings are inductively loud and clear when he sells a horse to the greenhorn that he calls "Buttercup" whose real name is Rocket. It is this subtle way of displaying the emotions of the characters that makes Pamela Britton's tale a fine reading experience.

      Book Description

In the 20 years since Tom Maier established the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls, he has trained more than 300 young women to do astounding riding tricks. Maier also teaches these simple truths: that values are taught through the disciplined pursuit of a goal, and that you don't give kids confidence and self-esteem, you show them how to earn it.

Coming from diverse backgrounds, the Cowboy Girls are renowned for their trick riding and roping act, but they are the real thing. Here is both the grit and the glory of world-class trick riding, plus real cowboy work - handling herds of horses and cattle, saddling mustangs, and driving stagecoaches.

This is the story of Tom Maier, of Riata Ranch, and of the young women whose lives have been enriched there. Told through rich text, entries from the diary of a current Cowboy Girl, the memories of Riata Ranch alumnae, and full-color photographs throughout, the story is spectacular and inspiring.

The Cowboy Girls have performed on network TV and in rodeos, Olympic exhibitions, horse-driving competitions, and NFL half-time shows. They have traveled to 15 countries and have been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Sports Illustrated, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Washington Post, and Cowboys & Indians magazine.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Non-Fiction Horse Book.......2004-02-20

This book trails one of the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls in her education about riding and horses. I had heard of the stunt team before and recently saw them featured in the 2004 Rose Parade on their Appaloosa horses but never really knew anything about them. After reading this book (suitable for anyone 10 and up I would say due to reading level) I have a hearty respect for the stunt team and their dedication to the advancement of horsemanship.

Although this is not a how-to book about riding, I think that it is a good addition to a horse or cowboy-lovers library because of its matter-of-fact exploration into what it takes to trully be a champion in horsemanship. Additionally, the story flows well and is very well illustrated with photos from Riata's heritage.

      5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Read!.......2001-05-23

The story of Tom Maier and the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls is a remarkable one, and should be an inspiration to anyone, whether they're interested in horses or not. For years, Maier has worked with children and horses, and the Cowboy Girls are world reknowned. The girls who are part of his program excel in all aspects of thier lives, thanks to the training and discipline they learn as part of this team. The story is very well written, and the photos are lavish. This book would make a great gift for anyone interested in horses, western culture, or successful models for inspiring greatness in children.

          UNCERTAIN VISION

For a twentieth-century man, Conrad Stargard had done a lot in thirteenth-century Poland. In just nine years, he had "discovered" universal education, aircraft, radios, steamboats, and machine guns. More important, he had prepared Poland to defeat the bloodthirsty Mongols in 1241.

But now that the Mongol hordes had arrived, something was disturbing the flow of history. Even the Time Masters who secretly watched over Conrad couldn't predict his future, because they no longer even knew their own past . . .

          5 out of 5 stars A Great, Classic Series.......2005-08-15

This series is a real favorite of mine. Great story line, great characters, and unique ideas. Now (as of Summer 2005) the latest Conrad book, "Conrad's Crusade" is now available from Leo Frankowski, on line! It is solid action on par with the best in the series. An e-copy is available at (...), and I recommend it highly.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but weakest of the series.......2002-06-26

Worth reading, but dramaticly weaker than the previous 3 in the series (which were delightful!).

The last 1/4 of the book isn't even story, more like a set of authors notes created to help him map out the future world.

There are several outright flubs, such as the hints about how they shouldn't have bragged about East Gate being impervious (which goes nowhere). Such as the last 20 pilots all "crash" landing at once, and they all die except Lambert who is unharmed? Like what happened with the Duke? Why the sudden ending with all the mongols in one place? The entire "time is shifting" angle seems to be thrown in to justify a few random changes in events (almost like the author wanted it both ways in one particular case), but goes nowhere. Weak.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent 5 Book Series.......2000-08-15

This is the best time travel series in a realistic timeline ever written. Before these books, L. Sprague De Camp had held that title for decades with his "Lest Darkness Fall", but it was too short. Mark Twain may be the most famous with his "Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court", but that is more light hearted than serious, and disappointing at the end. The Conrad series delivers on all the promise, and even after 5 books, it still leaves you wanting more. (There is a sixth book now, but Conrad is a minor character, and I've reviewed it separately.)

I say realistic timeline, because Conrad isn't really from our timeline. I was a little suspicious right from the start, but it wasn't until Conrad reminisced about the Mongols invading France that I thought "Hey, wait a minute". It turns out that it didn't happen to us (even without Conrad). But the historians I read agree that it would have, except the great Khan died and the Mongols had a war of succession which they never recovered from. This is often used as an example of the actions of one person changing history. I never even heard the story, until Conrad got me to look it up. Go figure.

This is an action story, with fighting and sex, where Conrad overcomes insurmountable obstacles, and usually has a good time along the way. The author doesn't just ignore the time travel though. He writes a science fiction sub-plot about that too. In fact, the author is obviously an engineer, not just because it takes an engineer for Conrad to build the things he does, but also from the way the books were planned out and crafted. Obviously the author planned the Mongol invasion and built the series around it, but he also foreshadows romantic sub-plots 3 books in advance.

I love these books, and share other reviewers disbelief that they haven't been reprinted since 1993. If you've already read them, and love them too, you might want to try "The Misplaced Legion (Videssos Cycle, Book 1)" by Harry Turtledove, about elements of one of Caesar's legions travelling into Rome's future of the Byzantine Empire. Only it's not the real Byzantine Empire, it's a parallel universe where magic works. Aside from that, it's Byzantium during the 1100's written by a Byzantine historian. And of course you'll want to read the "Island in the Sea of Time" series by S. M. Stirling, about modern day Nantucket going back in time to the Trojan War. These works are different, but also 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Ran out of gas.......2000-06-28

Leo Frankowski is a master of the first person story. The first 3/4 of this book was full of wit and fun technical details. However, this is still by far the weakest of the series. Books 1, 2 and 3 were some of the best SF work I have ever read. The last part of the book was a description of Conrad's world instead of the wonderful first person story that made this series so much fun..

5 out of 5 stars Leo has done it again!!! Just fabulous!!!.......1999-07-14

Science fiction the way it should be written. I Read it all in one sitting. It was thought provoking, and altogether fun. A must buy!!!

Walter L. Williams's excellent research has produced one of the most extensive studies of the berdache culture among Native Americans. Unlike the larger American society, Native Americans historically have respected, and in many tribal nations venerated, homosexuals. Williams explains the berdache as a custom, its social roles, and the berdache history, including its introduction to the European concept of sin and intolerance of sexual diversity. The word berdache applies almost exclusively to males, mainly because historical records only relate dealings with aboriginal males, but Williams also includes a chapter on female sexual diversity, using the word amazon to describe these often warriorlike women.

                4 out of 5 stars Eye-opening, but reverse-biased.......2005-01-20

Let's clear one thing up: Author Walter Williams is not advocating man/boy love simply by discussing it in this book. He goes out of his way, in fact, to distinguish between societies with man/boy love traditions and the role of the Berdache in various native american societies. He correctly notes that the man/boy cultures are generally "warrior" cultures where women have low status, whereas the Berdache role is both feminine and esteemed as such, and only possible in a society where women's culture is esteemed. Reviewer "Gemini Walker" should read more carefully...
Anyway, Williams' emphasis is on how many native American tribes had a respected, religion-based role for feminized males in their society. That said, I caution that if you're looking for a purely scholarly work, this isn't it; while well-researched, this book is also seasoned with Williams' flights of fancy about what might have happened between men in "fringe" cultures like Carribean Pirates and Wild West Cowboys. I admire Williams for making no secret about his bias, but I find his portrait of the Berdache somewhat idealistic, and unhindered by the dissapearence of its tribal context. I found myself plagued by questions of practicality regarding the role of the Berdache on a modern reservation. I also wish that he had explored parental attitudes towards their feminine-inclined male children in strongly self-identifying native american households which practice their tradional religion vs. parental attitudes of european-descent parents with strong attachment to their religion who also find themselves raising an effeminate male child.

                3 out of 5 stars Troubling.......2004-06-07

This book is fascinating, yet troubling. I attribute what troubles me to the obvious bias of the author, and yet -- it certainly made me think. Not so much as to how much of what the author says is true (and the rest of what he speculates); but how I feel about such speculation seeing the light of day. At the same time, I am not an advocate of censorship in any way. Perhaps these thoughts need to be available in order to make us aware of how people can make the erroneous connections about the gay movement that they do. I think a book like this does more harm than good. Homosexuality does not equal man/boy love. This author would suggest that it does.

                5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2001-01-19

                5 out of 5 stars Finally!!.......2000-11-13

Finally, I found a book that speaks the truth about my people. It is extremely rare to find books that cover the issues of the two-spirit people. Williams does an amazing job of fully researching the topic . . including living with/among the people he interviews. Read this book!

                5 out of 5 stars Mind-opening prespective on society's "Diversity-cide".......1997-06-27

A throughly documented and detailed historical and socialological account of American Indian society's andorgynous Benache, sex and sexual interactions. This book takes you back in history to understand how the Benache fit in the Indian culture and how that culture's sexual norms were very inclusive and accepting of what our society would label "diverse" people and actions. The historical prespective includes the invasion of european westerization and "Diversity-cide" of the indian culture. If one wants to be spiritually awakened to the possibility that our culture's (society) rules and norms aren't natural and that there are (were) societies where diverse individuals can feel good about themselves then this is the book for your soul. You'll feel good about yourself after reading this book. It might not specifically relate to you but you'll see that maybe we're headed back in the right direction
