Book Description
Djebar's first work to be published in English, this collection of three long stories, three short ones, and a theoretical post-face depicts the plight of urban Algerian women who have thrown off the shackles of colonialism only to face a posHColonial regime that denies and subjugates them even as it celebrates the liberation of men. Denounced in Algeria for its political criticism, Djebar's book quickly sold out its first printing of 15,000 copies in France and was hugely popular in Italy. Her stylistically innovative, lyrical stories address the cloistering of women, the implications of reticence, the connection of language to oppression, and the impact of war on both women and men. The afterword by Clarisse Zimra includes an illuminating interview with Djebar.
Book Description
The Scottish Lowlands, October 1789.
A year has come and gone since Jamie McKie fled for his life, arriving at Auchengray in search of sanctuary and a bonny wife. Young Rose McBride, as fair a lass as any in Scotland, dearly loves her handsome cousin—but so does her older sister, Leana.
Determined to have Jamie all to herself, Rose puts in motion one desperate plan after another, enlisting the aid of Lillias Brown, a wise woman—a wutch, some say—still keen on the old ways. Impetuous Rose ignores the cruel whispers that travel up and down the parish hills, never dreaming of the tragic consequences that await her.
Her sister, Leana, clings to her hard-won sense of peace and assurance by a slender thread of faith. Day and night, Leana’s hours are apent caring for wee Ian and praying that her future will hold more promise than her past.
Jamie McKie is busy making his own plans to return home to Glentrool and claim his inheritance. To do so means facing Evan, the brother whose blessing he stole, and Alec, the father whom he ruthlessly deceived. It is a perilous journey that will test the depth of his courage, the strength of his sword, and the tenacity of his vow to honor Almighty God, no matter the cost.

Rose turned into a Weed..........2007-07-13
After reading the first book "Thorn in my Heart", I was so excited to read the rest of the series. I was so sickened by Rose from the first chapter. Her character was terribly self-serving and horrid. I was disgusted by the end of the book with her. I have never felt so strongly about a fictional character before! I found myself sobbing for Leana during her trials. I was very tempted to put the book aside, as it was making me feel such emotions. I am in total agreement with other reviewers who had negative feelings towards Rose. Although she did try to better herself, she continuously made herself out to be a poor, pathetic victim. ICK!! The book in itself was very well written, but I felt myself just wanting the story to end already. There was just entirely too much suffering for Leana in this book.
Highly recommend.......2007-04-01
This book follows A Thorn In My Heart which I loved and quickly ordered the next two in the series. There is no way that the plot can be called predictable and it has such character since it is written around the 18th century in Scotland. If you enjoy Higgs writing or even Irish type stories, then you will love this book. The first book leaves you amazed at the events but this book is not boring and a sudden turn of events keeps the reader guessing and entranced. I give it 5 stars because I couldn't put the first book down once I got going and couldn't wait to buy the second two.
Love this Series!.......2007-03-24
Could not put the entire series down once I started. You have to read all 3!! The author does a wonderful job of translating Scotland to the pages and you can feel the love pour out between the characters.
I highly recommend this to anyone who likes a romantic read!
Fair Is the Rose.......2006-08-08
EXCELLENT!!! If you want someone to learn to love to read, I suggest this trillogy by Liz Curtis Higgs.
The Characters Were Off.......2006-07-20
In the Bible, Leah was tricked into sleeping with Jacob by her father, so that he could keep Jacob around to work the flocks for another seven years. Jacob NEVER loved her, there is never any mention of that in the Bible, just that she was the mother to many of his sons. Of course, there was probably a bit of love there, but it was never like his love for Rachel, he loved Rachel the MOST and it was made so clear in the Bible about that. But in this book, he is always declaring his love for Leana, and it makes it seem like he no longer loves Rose. I wanted Rose to just give him up all throughout the book, because she deserved someone SO MUCH BETTER than Jamie...He is a disappointing character in this book, and no one, not even Leana, has a heart! These most recent two books, "Fair is the Rose" and "Whence Came a Prince" were just not as good as the first one was. I hope that the final book in the series is better than both of these have been.

One of the Best Western Romances!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-18
I usually don't read western romance, I love mostly historiacal romances (especially regency). This is the second book of Ms. McKinney that I have read and I think she is a great writer..one who fully develops her characters and picks an interesting plot.
This being said, this was a GREAT BOOK. Don't even hesitate to buy it.
Christal is running from the law when she gets held hostage at gunpoint. The leader of the gang, Macaulay Cain, is a hard man but she gets glimses of his softer side. She becomes a puzzle to him, an obsession that he cannot shake off. He wants to know why she never talks about her past, never talks about her family. She IS holding in a deep dark secret. She is running from the law because her supposedly killed her parents and ran away from a mental instituiton. The person who is really reponsible for this crime is her uncle, but no one believes her. Therefore, she doesn't want to tell Cain the truth .
The story grabs you even more in the second half, where Cain ends up being a cop who is under cover as an outlaw. After his team catch the bad guys, she runs away. But his obsession of her leads him to follow her all the way to the brottols. He thinks she's prostituting but she really is a dancer. I can't say any more because I don't want to kill the book for the rest of the readers but it is a great books with a lot of funny and interesting plot twists. I can still play out some of the scenes , like a movie. For instance, when the group of outlaws expected him to rape her, he didn't . He took her behind tree and they acted it out. He respected her and took it upon himself to protect her. Also when she was running to him to show how much she loved him, she was throwing her wealthy jewelry to strangers. It was funny how Mckinney depicted this scene. (this scene u probably won't get till you read the book because it is kinda out of context because i don't want to kill the story)/ ENJOY!!
Just Maybe Her Best.......2004-04-04
Wow. Very well done story.
It always bugs me a bit when someone is ready to die of love 24 hrs after meeting. In this story the chemistry is almost immediate but the relationship is very believable. The storyline is unique and engaging and just a great romance.
Definitely one of Meagan's best, on a scale with Penelope Williamson, who holds #1 in my heart right now for great romance-writing for grown-ups.
Fair is the Rose by Meagan McKinney (is more than Fair).......2000-08-08
Action packed, mysterious heroine, sullen and brooding but confident gunslinging special agent hero, and a 'whole pasel of outlaws and villains' make this 1875 western a real winner!
Christalbel Van Alen has escaped a mental institute and is being pursued by a relative who wants her dead! She, the only witness to a murder, disguises herself as a widow and is traveling to find the smallest ghost town in the west to create a new life for herself. However, her dreams are disturbed when her stagecoach is captured by outlaws and the prisoners are taken captive for ransom.
There Christal comes face to face with a real life gunfighter, an enemy whom also becomes her saviour. MacCauley Cain.
But Christal runs again when she feels threatened of her past being discovered and true to life, her past finds her. If you enjoy outlaws, gunslingers, bounty hunters, saloon girls and cowbows (the genre) and mysterious heroines or heroes, then you'll love Fair is the Rose. Fair is the Rose keeps you turning page after page and on the edge of your seat.
Personal note: I admit I own tons of Meagan McKinney's novels purchased from 'dime stores' and have never read any, until I read 'Fair is the Rose' and I began searching through my hundreds of romance novels to find ALL of McKinney's writings. She quickly became one of my favorites. But one thing I noticed in 'Fair is the Rose', the heroine never bathed! Talk about scent of a woman!
A BOOK THAT WILL TAKE YOU AWAY.......1999-10-07
From the synopsis, the book may sound sappy, but it isn't. The hijacking and the events that took place left you breathless, and when they find each other again -quite interesting. I didn't give it 5 stars because the ending could of been better.
Overall, if you want a book that takes you back to the 1800's, with a runaway, murder, and some outlaws thrown in, this book is for you.

wonderful Americana romance.......2002-01-23
In 1887, William "Buffalo Bill" Cody hires Rose Ellen Gilhooey as a trick rider in his Wild West show. Though not as famous as her pal Annie Oakley, six years later Rose still performs at Mr. Cody's show as The Wild West troupe works the Colombian Exposition of the Chicago World's Fair. Covering the World's Fair to include Buffalo Bill's Wild West show are local reporters Horatio Lambert "H.L." May and Sam Trimble.
The two journalists look forward to seeing the two female stars of Buffalo Bill's extravaganta. After meeting Annie and Rose, H.L. decides to do a story on the less famous woman who rides as well as any Indian. As he follows her for his story, Rose and H.L. fall in love. He rejects his feelings so that the chances of sharing what Frank Butler and Annie have seem remote.
The first tale in Alice Duncan's "Meet Me at the Fair", COMING UP ROSES, is a wonderful Americana romance that though placed in a different city echoes the delight of the movie Meet Me In St. Louis. The perspicacious story line is fun enabling the audience to acquire an impression of the American Gay Nineties while also providing a warm romance. Rose is an engaging character refusing to bury her country roots, but it is H.L. who steals the show by fleeing his small town Twain-like heritage for a Windy City persona. Ms. Duncan provides a delightful historical romance that will provide this rising star with a horde of new admirers.

An Important Little Book About an Important Subject.......2001-06-28
Although this book is only 20 pages long, it contains helpful information about the concept of fair trade. Americans have so much, and it is hard for us to imagine the degree of poverty in other third-world countries. Rose Ericson begins to introduce the subject of what fair trade means to these nations. To us it is only a $1 sometimes, but that $1 in a poor nation can supply food for a day to an entire family. In our hurry to accumulate material goods, we must be careful to not take advantage of the artisans and producers of these third-world nations. Fair trade is a concept whose time has come.

ERRAND OF FURY
Following the harrowing events of the Errand of Vengeance trilogy, tensions between the Federation and the Klingon Empire are the highest they've been since the Battle of Donatu V twenty-five years earlier. Even as Federation Ambassador Robert Fox engages in tense negotiations with the Klingon ambassador to maintain the peace, Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise sees his vessel refit from a ship of exploration into a ship of war. The coming conflict will take its toll on many personal lives as well...
Leslie Parrish: The security supervisor is stunned to learn that she is pregnant by her recently killed lover, Jon Anderson -- and that Anderson was, in fact, a Klingon spy, surgically altered to pass as human.
Karel: Brother of the Klingon agent posing as Anderson, and responsible for his death, Captain Koloth's new first officer faces a crisis of faith as he sees the Klingon Empire falling into dishonorable ruin.
Michael Fuller: Father of Enterprise security supervisor Sam Fuller, who was killed in a battle with the Klingons, his son's death reminds him of Donatu V, of which he was one of the few survivors. Has Fuller reenlisted in Starfleet and joined the Enterprise security team out of loyalty -- or vengeance?
The first in an all-new series!
SEEDS OF RAGE
Customer Reviews:
Excellent story, a sequel to the author's previous trilogy........2007-05-08
Of course, it continues to have the problem of not having an ending. I prefer multi-part stories in which each part has one complete story-arc of its own, but this is rarely seen, and this book is no exception. It is simply the first third of a story. Other than that I have little to complain about; the plot, pacing, characterizations, action, are all excellent.
Kevin Ryan Strikes Again! A Fast and Furious Star Trek Tale.......2005-07-11
For any Star Trek fan - from the hardcore to the casual - who ever wanted an answer to the question of what all those OTHER crewmen and women were up to on the Enterprise, Kevin Ryan is the must-read author in this Trek universe. His ability to spin richly detailed stories and create sympathatic characters who were, in most cases, passers-by in the TV series, is unmatched. In SEEDS OF RAGE ( a sequel to the Errand of Fury trilogy) we begin - at long last - to understand the human element in the run-up to the Federation/ Klingon war.
We find a father grieving and raging over the death of his son. A career woman at war with herself over an impossible choice. An alien culture fighting to retain its own honor. And all this against the backdrop of a seemingly unaviodable galactic conflict. This is not merely a great Star Trek story. This is a great story, period.
Kevin Ryan's books make for good reading. They are fast, engaging, and true to the source material. Do yourself a favor, and get started on them today!
Kevin Ryan is quickly becoming my favorite ST author!!!.......2005-06-28
So far, Mr. Ryan's books have been breaths of fresh air in the ST franchise. He gracefully ties his new adventures to those in the original series. If you're a fan who likes to know what goes on below decks after Kirk calls for "Red Alert," than this books is for you.
I can't wait for the next one!
Dedicated to those beyond the main crew........2005-06-11
I enjoyed reading Kevin's latest book "Seeds of Rage".
I especially like the way he connected back to the "Errand of Vengeance" series and also the subtle connections made back to the original Star Trek series. The only thing I didn't care for, was that I'll have to wait for the next book. I'm looking forward to reading Part II soon.
A fast-paced Klingon adventure, revisiting the lower decks!.......2005-04-11
As Star Trek fans might recall, "The Janus Gate" (LA Graf) and "Errand of Vengeance" (Kevin Ryan) trilogies were part of a Pocket Books experiment in 2002 to supposedly "relaunch" the "original series" Star Trek novels with a deeper look into, and weaving between, known TOS episodes via Kirk's Enterprise's "lower decks" crew - based, I guess, on the popularity of the episode "Lower Decks" in TNG, where viewers got to see a new perspective on day-to-day Enterprise-D ship life.
LA Graf set their adventure just after "The Naked Time" and before "Charlie X". They used several characters who would soon suffer tragedy in "Balance of Terror". Ryan then set his first trilogy just after "Balance of Terror", with some of the action taking place simultaneously with "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" but before "Dagger of the Mind". He also used the surname-less Sam from "Charlie X" and rounded out that character. Following "production order", readers might realise that the unresolved brewing Klingon war theme would ultimately be revisited in the TV episode "Errand of Mercy".
When the first six books' resulting stories turned out to be not all that different in style to most other TOS novels, Pocket's ST editors decided to absorb them back into the usual run of TOS fiction. Out of the blue, or so it seemed, came 2005's new Ryan instalment, the first of a sequel set of novels called "Errand of Fury". The new action in "Seeds of Rage" picks up just after the events of the episode "The Devil in the Dark" (thus "Errand of Mercy" is almost upon us).
"Seeds of Rage", and the next books, promise to reveal exciting stuff about Sam [Fuller]'s vengeful father, Michael, and the fate of original Kevin Ryan character, Leslie Parrish. "Seeds of Rage" is a great read! It moves at such a fast pace that noone should have trouble finding the time to read "Errand of Fury: Seeds of Rage" all over again, if they need a memory boost, when the next instalment, "Demands of Honor", comes out in 2006.
What I really love about both the "Errand of Vengeance" trilogy, and this first book in "Errand of Fury", are the high concept, out-of-left field, what-ifs Kevin Ryan throws into the mix. In the first trilogy it was "What if a minor redshirt we saw in 'What Are Little Girls Made Of?' was a Klingon agent, and what if there were others?" and in this one it's "What if an Enterprise redshirt fell pregnant to such an agent?" Doing this makes the stories compelling, and adds to their page-turner nature. Even though we think we know how the events of the TV episodes turn out, Ryan puts a unique spin on our expectations, as his stories weave throughout the action of existing episodes.
It doesn't matter that you haven't seen episodes such as "A Taste of Armageddon" (to know Ambassador Fox better) or "Errand of Mercy" (which introduces Kor and the Klingons to TOS audiences) but, if you have, you are in for many additional treats when reading "Seeds of Rage".

"Do Go Into It".......2005-04-24
On my 5th listening of these cd's, Krishnamurti's voice became absolutely warm, deeply concerned for his audience (You) and inviting. It became to me more and more evident that every sentence is meant to invite awakening. "This is not a lecture" "This is not an entertainment". He urges us to not accept or reject his statements (that would be meaningless) but to see for ourselves. I've read Krishnamurti's essays. Hearing his voice is much more passionate and meaningful. If you were ever intrigued in his words, I recommend hearing them. As far as content, this makes an excellent overview of K's approach to ending conflict, suffering and fear in order to exist in perpetual intelligence and serenity.
Life changing.......2004-10-06
To hear Krishnamurti speak for the first time was absolutely overwhelming. For those who are willing to think seriously about the violence in the world and how each one of us is responsible for helping to bring about change, buy this CD. It will change your life!!!

How Krishnamurti Applies His Philosphy In His Own Life.......2004-02-17
It is the nature of the human mind to have it's thoughts, opinions, and images about nearly everything it comes across, -so doubtless when someone encounters the work of Krishanmurti, their mind begins to have imaginings about him being this angelic sort of being. The next step, of course, is to think that if they are to try to integrate Krishnamurti's insights into their own life, then they should also try to imitate the angelic behaviors that they imagine him having. This line of thought leads to a person putting on a plastic persona because there are these associations they have about how a deeply spiritual person is "supposed" to behave. This book is useful to help demolish these tendencies of imitation and hero worship by showing Krishnamurti's quirky and human side.
To me, it doesn't matter if Ingram Smith ever really "got" Krishnamurti's teachings, or if he was just a "follower". The value of this book is that it contains first hand stories that will be of interest to those who appreciate Krishanamurti's insights. They can always take Smith's commentary or leave it.
It Never Fails . . ........2001-03-05
Of all the people who ever shared his thoughts on the subject, Krishnamurti always remained adamant about one thing: all following perverts the follower. There is no saviour but oneself. No religions, beliefs or gurus matter, only the truth that you yourself discover. And as usual, a group of weak-minded followers decide to guru-ify Krishnamurti, to the very antithesis of all that he ever had to say. Ingram seems to fins an almost unreal significance in K.'s most trivial activities. In one chapter, he write that he was "delighted" when he discovered K. reading a joke book, rather than "real" literature. I can only imagine what would have happened if Krishnamurti had said something like, "Oh, drat, my shoes are untied". I can just hear Ingram's response: "And then the full force of the true meaning of this statement struck me; this is a perfect exampleof how Krishnaji was always awake to the present moment, and the singinficance of Krishnaji's untied shoes never left me." Jiddu Krishnamurti was a man who basically came up with the philosophy of Zen Buddhism up all on his own, but he excelled at practicing it far more than the Zen monks, who seem to be more rule-bound that most other religious orders. Although unique in that he empahsised that each and everyone of us has to find out for onself, his followers cannot resist turning him into a guru, some sort of god-man, which perverts the most basic ideas that he tried to impart. The man who wrote the book obviously got nothing from K.'s ideas or else he would have regarded him as less a teacher and himself as more the teacher, but he turns everythiung Krishnamurti ever stood for and turns it in its head. On the other hand, it does offer one a glimpse into the personal, informalside of Jiddu Krishnamurti and maybe worth a perusal for that. But the author was as blind as can be . . . don't use this as your guidebook on Krishnamurti's thought, it is completely the antithesis of what Jiddu always tried to get across.
