Book Description
Since the mid-nineteenth century, artists have compulsively rejected received ideas in order to test and subvert morality, law, society, and even art itself. But what happens when all boundaries have been crossed, all taboos broken, all limits violated?
Transgressions is the first book to address this controversial subject. Here Anthony Julius traces the history of subversion in art from the outraged response to Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l'Herbe to the scandal caused by the grant programs of the National Endowment for the Arts a century and a half later. Throughout the book, and supported by the work of such artists as Marcel Duchamp, the Chapman brothers, Andres Serrano, Damien Hirst, Gilbert & George, Paul McCarthy, Jeff Koons, Hans Haacke, and Anselm Kiefer, Julius shows how the modern period has been characterized by three kinds of transgressive art: an art that perverts established art rules; an art that defiles the beliefs and sentiments of its audience; and an art that challenges and disobeys the rules of the state.
The evidence assembled, Julius concludes his hard-hitting dissection of the landscapes of contemporary art by posing some important questions: what is art's future when its boundary-exceeding, taboo-breaking endeavors become the norm? And is anything of value lost when we submit to art's violation?
Transgressions is not a comfortable—still less a comforting—read, but it has a powerful urgency that makes it an essential document for anyone involved in our cultural life at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
Customer Reviews:
Is it scat or art?.......2003-04-11
This book nudges up to all kinds of scary issues: pornography, images of violence, censorship, freedom of expression. The brilliant lawyer Anthony Julius takes as his occasion the ways in which modern art since the mid nineteenth century has taken as part of its mission to challenge (and raise into public consciousness) the moral and cultural norms of a society. When is a work of art pornographic? When does it portray and comment upon a work of such savage violence that we are violated by being challenged to even look at it? What role does satire play in massaging transgressive images and their ideas for general consumption? From Manet's "Olympia" to Serrano's "Piss Christ," Julius assembles the evidence in this broadly and wonderfully written account of a modern phenomenon. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous, authentic, thorough--GREAT book!.......2007-05-16
Whenever I take this book out, people fight over a peek into its glossy pages. It covers everything in fashion from the fifties, though mostly focusing on women. The pictures depict fashions, from dresses to shoes, hats and gloves to maternity wear; the women's hairstyles, makeup, and overall looks give the reader the most authentic possible view of fashion and the aesthetic ideals of the time. The catalogue also shows the prices and features descriptions that include fabric, color, and price. There are some pictures of teenage, male, and children's fashions. This book is thorough and unbelievably beautiful.
Really good fashion overview........2006-11-09
I was born in early 1953 so many of the fashions still mean something to me. I have to admit that I'm still drawn to the femininity of the period but I have my dreams and you have yours and we'll leave it at that. This is a good book for the money. Not too detailed, the reproductions can get a little bit fuzzy and there is no color; but this what you get for $15 these days. If you like what you see here, there are other resources to persue. It's a pretty good starting point.
A fun trip down memory lane.......2005-04-19
I truly enjoyed reading the old advertising copy while looking at the old ads. Some of the fashions I remember my grandmother and mother wearing. Lots of fun reading.
One of the best 50's books ever made.......2004-04-15
This is a primary source book that tells the prices and materials, which are very helpful to a costume designer. I also enjoy the book Fifties Forever, which is similar except it's color photos of actual vintage stuff (the color does help, but the Sears catalogue is still great without it).
Very informative.......2004-02-03
I thouroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was packed from start to finish with pictures. The book gives an excellent overview of what the average woman was wearing in the 1950's, unlike many similar books which focus on important designers.
While it is very light on text I still feel that it is a must for anyone interested in this period.

Paul Pope brings a quiet, old-school sensibility to noisy, postmodern comics with Heavy Liquid. This graphic novel, set in the late 21st century, focuses on all the classic elements of detective and adventure stories: lost love, mysterious clients, a package everyone wants, and a tired, barely willing protagonist. The narrative details--such as the eponymous liquid, which is part munition, part drug, and much stranger than any character imagines--are calculated to foil the reader's assumptions, and the expressionistic artwork blends simple colors with bold lines to draw the eyes onward. It seems safe to say that cyberpunk's not dead. --Rob Lightner
Customer Reviews:
Weight indeed.......2007-10-01
So apparently they haven't reprinted this for a while... I don't know that it's worth $[...].
However, Pope's got his glory moment with this book. 100% and a lot of his other stuff is just a little too pretentious for me. Yes, you're a handsome man. Yes, you have an expressive line. No, not everyone gives a crap what you think about all day. The best artists are their own worst critics...and I tend to feel that Pope lets himself get away with a little too much sometimes (the new THB is another exception).
ANYWAY, this book is fabulous, and the way Pope plays with ink as material acts as this beautiful mirror/vehicle for the non-physical matter of the drug he invents, Heavy Liquid. The story is completely unconventional, and watching the characters trip is a lot of fun.
HORRIBLE AMAZON SERVICE.......2006-05-12
i ordered this item in FEBUARY and it still has not arrived and it's MAY!!!
buyers beware. If you see the "item not yet on stock" do not try and attempt to buy them. you will never get them! the book might be good and amazon might be the only online store that sells it, but never gets it to ya.
S is for Stooge.......2005-11-18
I know nothing about Pope, just happened to see this collection of the five-comic run at the library and picked it up. The story is set in a very recognizable version of our world somewhere in the late decades of this century. There are a few areas of technological improvement, such as supersonic air travel and a sort of enhanced internet with a visual/holographic interface. Otherwise, any sci-fi elements are restrained as the story takes place in a grimy, ominous and claustrophobic New York and Paris. The main plotline is pretty familiar: there's an anti-hero named "S" (for Stooge) who has stolen some mysterious stuff from some criminals who want it back. In another plotline, S is hired by a mysterious rich man to find down the sculptor who used to be S's girlfriend.
So far, all familiar stuff, a reluctant anti-hero, a mysterious package, a mysterious client, and an old flame -- and there's a mysterious man in black who also seems to want to have a word with S... What is less familiar is the titular "heavy liquid", which is highly explosive, but also highly hallucinogenic (and addictive) when heated and ingested. This is what sustains interest in what is otherwise a pretty straightforward crime/chase story. As the story goes on, it becomes apparent that there's more to the heavy liquid than meets the eye. The bulk of the story has S running around evading the trio of deadly gangsters called "the clowns", who, for some unknown reason, wear art-related masks (one is a cubist, etc...) while he does his thing. S is a kind of fatalistic, retro dude, addicted to the heavy liquid and lamenting the loss of his few friends.
The art sports a kind of late '60s, early '70s retro feel, and S looks distinctly like a late '60s Mick Jagger (Pope even describes his haircut as a "Jagger" in one insert). The title, of course, comes from the Iggy & The Stooges song, so that should give one a sense of the vibe. Pope's lines are very loose and free, which I don't particularly care for, but others will dig the fluid style. The coloring is basic red, blue, black, and blends of these, resulting in a restrained palate which adds a lot to the retro-tone of the work. The lettering is kind of irritating, stylized to the point where it's hard to read at times. The dialogue is pretty pedestrian for the most part, kind of pastiche of weary noir, although there are occasional bright spots. My favorite line is when a hacker boasts about getting access to some online info: "I hack like emphysema." On the whole, the book left me very underwhelmed, although to a certain extent, that's due to my personal dislike for Pope's art style.
Best of the best.......2003-06-21
I wish I saw this novel on more Top 10 lists, but oh well. Nevertheless, I demand that you buy this book right now, and with the hefty discount Amazon is providing, you can't afford to pass this up! With a cover price of 30 beans, I can understand why some would balk initially at purchasing this, but now you have no excuse! Thirty percent off is the deal of the century for this book, and I paid full cover at my local shop! If you are a fan of modern fiction, fine graphical art, or just insane ideas, you owe it to yourself to pick this up at Amazon's great discount.
Set in the near future, the main question in Heavy Liquid is "what is Heavy Liquid?" I'm not going to tell you, but I will tell you that the characters in this story are all affected by this strange substance, part highly addictive drug, part... I don't want to spoil it, but suffice it to say that Pope's concepts are always first rate. As someone else mentioned, fans of PK Dick should take note of this work and read it.
The art is Paul's signature style, completely unmistakably his and no one else's. The lines themselves form beautiful abstract art, in addition to the concrete images they suggest, but his execution is so fluid that nothing is stale or static; these pages rip with dynamics.
All in all, among the very best graphic novels of all time, and considering that it is the work of one man, it qualifies as genius.
One of the best graphic novels I've ever read.......2003-04-10
Heavy Liquid takes place in a not so distant future, and the plot circles around a man only known as "S".He''s mission is to deliver a pack of the ultimate high: Heavy Liquid to a mysterious collector. Heavy Liquid has everything a good comic should have and some more, read it.

Book Description
This book deals with the concepts and techniques that have been developed to meet this challenge and with their application to the interpretation of experiment. The author surveys in detail the many-body techniques, scaling, renormalization group, Fermi liquid and Bethe ansatz, which lead to a solution of the Kondo problem for most of the theoretical models. The book also deals with special techniques for N-fold degenerate models for rare earth magnetic impurities. The many-body techniques developed to deal with strong correlation impurity problems have also been extended to provide a partial explanation of heavy fermion behavior.

Book Description
This study covers the latent demand outlook for household heavy-duty liquid laundry detergents across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for household heavy-duty liquid laundry detergents. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Customer Reviews:
They weren't wrong with that sub-title........2006-10-22
I purchased this book expecting a witty retort against the books it parodies. Instead, it appears to be a collection of every remotely relevant "email forward" that ever existed. These forwards are something I dislike receiving in my inbox, let alone actually paying money for.
In addition to that, there are a number of errors that undermine its entire point - in one spot, it tests the reader's ability to spell the word "calendar", (ignoring that both "calender" and "calendar" are real words), giving multiple-choice-style options. Unfortunately, none of the multiple choice options actually matches the answer given. Considering the sub-title of this book, perhaps this is some level of sincerity that I fail to appreciate.
I made the unfortunate mistake of expecting a large amount of original content that had at least been proofread. Silly me.
"[...] English".......2006-08-02
As someone with a degree in English I found this book very funny. Some of the content really made me think about where he got his examples from. Then I realized people talk and write like that everyday and to the average person it sounds/looks fine. It's nice to know that there are other people out there who are bothered by the use of the English language. It was something to easily read in my spare time that made me laugh and had people around me wondering why.
A Parody ?.......2005-07-26
The title of the book (and the authors name viz. A Parody) seems to indicate that it is a spoof on the hugely-popular recent book with a similar name "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" (By Lynn Truss).
The book starts off by saying that it is ok to make grammatical mistakes (something which the Lynn Truss book considers as a blasphemy) but the book is not about bad english or its usage.
I found the book to be about the magic of the English Language. How different things can mean different things in different contexts. The book talks about cliches, maxims, abbreviations, political gaffes, spoonersims. You name it. Like I said, through examples of bad english and bad grammer, the author (is his name actually A. Parody?) shows us the appeal of the English language.
Not to be missed!
