Book Description

Revisiting Trent, North Carolina -- the town so poignantly rendered in his acclaimed novel, Hello Down There -- Michael Parker picks up the story of Reka Speight, a woman determined to discover a wider world than the rural backwater of her youth.

Recently released from prison for a crime she did not commit, Reka returns home with one goal: to escape Trent for someplace unencumbered by history. But leaving Trent also takes her away from the one person she cares about, her younger brother Randall. As Reka heads west in search of a new life, she is forced to make a choice between the life she has always wanted and the brother she cannot leave behind.

2 out of 5 stars Weak Sequel.......2003-03-19

I was a great admirer of Hello Down There, Parker's previous novel, and I enjoy a few of his stories as well. This new novel, however, leaves much to be desired. I read the first 250 pages or so before I finally got too bored to continue. Parker clearly knows how to put words and sentences together, but his talent stops there. Plot and character development are almost entirely absent from this book.

Parker should write poetry. His love for language is that of a poet's. He lacks what it takes to be an interesting novelist on the scale of John Gardner, John Updike, or Gore Vidal. That is to say, he lacks the ability to infuse his fiction with engaging concepts and an interesting story.

If you want to read Parker's work, pick up Hello Down There, though you might be better advised to read Fred Chappell, Jay Parini, or David Slavitt, all of whom are fantastic novelists.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2001-11-05

This book has great characters and a intricate plot.Michael Parker promises great things in the future. A writer that accurately presents his subjects in a beautiful manner.

1 out of 5 stars It only gets worse.......2001-09-29

This is one of the most unfulfilling books I have ever read. It has plot holes big enough to drive a truck through and the author is so impressed with his own writing that he forgot to develop the characters or plot beyond a simple and highly unlikely outline.

I kept reading in hopes that the ending would bring everything together and create some sort of emotional resonance but it was an even bigger disappointment that the rest of the book. Don't waste your time on this book unless you enjoy reading about a couple of self-centered, whining kids who never get beyond their own skin.

5 out of 5 stars untouted masterpiece.......2001-08-05

Why this novel has not received more attention is beyond me. It is ambitious in its subject matter, rich in its characterizations, and lilting in its prose. A very satisfying read with passages that will stay with the reader. PArker takes the southern gothic genre and turns it on its ear. reka and randall speight grow up dirt poor in nc, reka her younger brother's protector. after she sets out to find herself a new life, Randall sets out to find her. Their search for each other is Dickensian in the best sense, avoiding the pitfalls of melodrama. Paker's use of the late fifties and early sixties as backdrop is also effective. Read this book and tellyour friends. It deserves more attention!

2 out of 5 stars No, no, no........2007-02-21

Okay, I love historical romance. But this book, oh no! No.

"Synnovea" (??) is possibly one of the most unlikeable heroines I have ever encountered. Her little scheme to ruin her own reputation rather than marry the aging Vladimir is so ridiculous, I almost threw the book across the room. I mean... hello? The Tsar is your friend. He cares about your welfare. Why not go to him if your hosts are trying to destroy you? Why not ask for help, rather than ruin yourself and put the life of your panting suitor in danger? Not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, that Synnovea, but hey, at least she is the MOST GORGEOUS WOMAN EVER, with eyes like green orbs that are described over and over again until everyone reading the book HAS to want to vomit.

And good ol' "Tyre"... are we supposed to feel bad for him, for being so wronged by Synnovea? What about the fact that he was totally raring to compromise her virtue without thought to her reputation? He describes himself as a "rutting stag", totally ready to satiate his lusts on Synnovea's "sweetmeats" (barf), such a "succulent feast". NOPE. Both of them are idiots and get what they deserve!

I have never endured such long-winded conversations (who has time to trade barbs with a thief, on a trail in front of a batallion of thieves and soldiers?) or speculations. I have never heard a man use the word "silken" before, much less TWICE in THE SAME CONVERSATION with a GIRL HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE MAD AT.

Reassured as I am that Synnovea is the most delectable fruit, the most beautiful damsel, the daintiest morsel in all Russia (or all of Europe, for that matter), I did not need reminders every page about how gorgeous she was. About her creamy cleavage, her long black tresses, her green orbs, yadda yadda. REALLY tiresome. Perfection. He can't resist. No one can. Such sweet agony, such honeyed torture. Gotcha. Page 417, and we're still being reminded. And, like, TWO things have happened plot-wise.

It got to the point that any time she changed outfits, we'd have to endure paragraph after paragraph of how incredible she looked in it. "Oh noooo... she put on a nightgown, here we go again..."

I do NOT reccomend this book. At all. And I am a SUCKER for historical romance. Sorry.

Kathleen E. Woodiwiss is probably my all time favorite author. I have never read one of her books with out laughing, crying, and falling in love with the characters. This book is no exception. I holds your interest from the front cover to the back. Really worth reading.

1 out of 5 stars Very Very disappointed.......2005-01-05

While i was on my honeymoon in Fiji i decided to by this book. Cost me 20 Fijian dollars and to tell u the truth i was sorely disappointed. I found this book very hard to get into and most of all very unbelievable. I agree with other reviewers it was great to set this book in Russia but the words and Character interactions were Quite poor and toooooo long. Tell me.. did all the men speak like Tyrone did in those days?? Why.. i was bored stiff. He did not do anything for me. In addition.. i found that the story just dragged and dragged and draaaaggggeeed!!! Thus by the end of the first couple of Chapters i havnt finished the book! WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!

I loved shanna.. but this one paled in comparison.. Better luck next time KEW>

2 out of 5 stars You might want to pass this one up........2002-12-31

Sorry, but I am agreeing with several of the other reviews who don't seem to care for this book too much. I got lost in the detail. I questioned the names, and the bathhouse seemed to be the most popular of places in this book. I loved the idea of the setting being Russia instead of England. I have always enjoyed Woodwiss books but this is definitely not my favorite.

    2 out of 5 stars Oh Dear.......2002-07-28

I gave this novel the old college try, but it just wasn't working for me. Why, I'm not sure. The writing was too thick instead of being narrative. I did give this two stars for being set in Russia--it always seems like everything is set in England. I made note of the reviewer from Russia and the reviewer who also made note of the Russian reviewer. Myself I haven't studied much about Russia, but I did think the names were rather odd. Really, if you're going to the trouble of writing a huge novel, what does it take to spend a day or two in the library researching yourself?

A Russian countess and an English cavalier set each other aflame and shake a royal court to its foundations. Fans of such epic best sellers as Ashes in the Wind and Shanna will agree that no other writer offers such richly drawn romance or such robust, flesh-and-blood characters. Three years in the writing, Forever in Your Embrace continues the great Woodiwiss tradition, plunging you into the hot-blooded, tempestuous world of Europe four centuries ago. There, in the depths of a forest, the beautiful and fiercely independent Countess Synnovea suffers a rude interruption in her travels, the arrival of a band of brigands! Robbery and rape seem inevitable. Then, out of nowhere, a royal officer rides to Synnovea's rescue, only to disappear again before she has even thanked him. Who was he? Synnovea gets the answer a few hours later at a roadside inn, when she inadvertently steps naked into a bathhouse pool that's already occupied by her rescuer! By the time she learns he is Sir Tyrone Rycoft, a British soldier of fortune, she has been piqued by his bold, swaggering ways, and has aroused in him a passion he had long since forsworn. Though neither of them can know it yet, from now on their fates will be inseparable, during intrigues at court, wars abroad, and one great, explosive scandal.

              Book Description

"About Time" serves as the definitive (albeit unofficial) guide to "Doctor Who" Seasons 7 to 11-the whole of the Jon Pertwee era. Written by Lawrence Miles (Faction Paradox) and Tat Wood (SFX, TV Zone), About Time not only examines the usual continuity concerns (alien races, etc.) in bursting detail, but looks at how the political / social issues of the 1970s affected the show's production. Essays in this volume include: "When are the UNIT Stories Set?", "Just How Chauvinistic is Doctor Who?" and "When was Regeneration Invented?"

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Pertwee Era Exhibition.......2006-08-10

"About Time" is the best work written so far about Doctor Who. It is incredibly thorough and somewhat witty, and shows connections that would have made James Burke blush.

Besides giving accurate continuity (which tries to be as objective as possible, unlike "Ahistory" or "The Discontinuity Guide"), "About Time" also offers where the ideas for the stories came from, arguments (both pro- and con-) about the merits of the show, and many, many anecdotes which are a lot of fun to read, as well as a plethora of gaffes and plot points that don't make sense (of which there are many in Doctor Who).

The big thing which is missing is of course a proper synopsis or summary of each story. However, it is more likely that if you have bought these books, you have already seen the stories several times over and just want to read more about them, so a summarization would be a waste of paper. (And if you have not seen Doctor Who, the book has no intention on convincing you to see it.)

This third volume, the first to be released, shows the entire run of Jon Pertwee's Doctor, and does a very good job despite one major difficulty: As the first book released, it is much smaller than the others on a pages-per-season basis despite the amount of data available.

Indeed, one gets the feeling that some anecdotes were left out of the book. Perhaps they were. Maybe it is possible that the volume is due for a second edition already?

Of course, those who miss remarks about the Brigadier's moustache changing from story to story are not missing much as many shows had flaws like that.

I very heartily recommend this book if you want a very intensive and enjoyable romp through the good old days of the early 1970s and how Doctor Who managed to survive the changeover to color television and the hiring of a comedian to play a straight role.

Those who do not wish to buy all six volumes will probably buy "The Discontinuity Guide" or perhaps something else, and will definitely miss out on a lot of gold here. (Always keep gold in mind in case of Cybermen.)

4 out of 5 stars Great, with one exception.......2006-02-28

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. It's the product of almost too-exhaustive research. There is one glaring ommision, however.
While they provide a snippet of text to remind the reader what a given episode was about, and even go so far as to describe the "cliff-hanging" endings, there's no synopsis - not even in briefest of form. Hence, they provide a thorough research of stories for which they provide practically no context. One must either (a) have a good memory for the shows in question, (b) have seen them recently - or have access to them in some form, or (c) have access to an episode guide of some sort - requiring one to skip back and forth between different documents to gain a throrough understanding of the show(s). How easy would it have been to provide a summary of the show - preferably broken down by episode? The authors might argue that (a) episode guides are readily available and (b) it's a "spoiler" to give the plot away. I'd counter that this kind of omission makes their reference work rather (and sadly) incomplete. I hope they rememdy this with future volumes. (so far I've only looked at volume 3)

5 out of 5 stars The best guide to any television series ever starts here..........2005-07-02

I initially approached the About Time series with a certain sense of trepidation, given that it was published by Mad Norwegian, and I've always had issues with the fanboyish glee that filled the I, Who books, especially towards sex. (This is a Mad Norwegian tradition, admittedly, as even the guide to the TRANSFORMERS features a section on lines that, by and large, are double entendres by a stretch at best.) However, given that the books were co-written by Lawrence Miles, arguably the finest writer to work in the Doctor Who novel range and my favorite writer of Doctor Who material not named Robert Holmes, I thought I'd give this a shot.

ABOUT TIME 3 covers the Jon Pertwee years of Doctor Who, the era of UNIT and the Master and the series going into color-and it covers it in insane detail. THE DISCONTINUITY GUIDE, the previous benchmark for Doctor Who guidebooks, covers the entire 26 seasons of Doctor Who in its length; ABOUT TIME 3 covers all the time Pertwee was the Doctor. Anyone who reads this book and thinks there isn't enough detail in it is the most obsessive of fans. Miles and Wood cover every episode as it appeared on the screen, and delve into not only the themes of each story but the influence of the times on each story, as well as deliver a mind boggling amount of trivia about each and every episode. Speaking as someone who had not seen much of the Third Doctor before this, I have to say that a newcomer to Doctor Who will easily be drawn to this era based on the care Miles and Wood lavish upon the book. (Personally, after reading this I wished THE AMBASSADORS OF DEATH existed in a form worthy of DVD.)

The essays, which go deeper not only into the lore of Doctor Who (starting with the notorious argument of when the UNIT stories actually took place) but even further into the underlaying concerns and issues that surrounded the show are the best part of the book; there are quite a few guides for Who out there, but this kind of essay is missing in the ones that I've read at least. And while the other reviewer found the tone of the book to be a bit smug, I found it to be simply honest; Lawrence Miles has never held back when he thinks Doctor Who is lacking (the furor he raised this year when he wrote a scathing review of the subtext of Mark Gatiss' THE UNQUIET DEAD from the new series is testament to this.) but first and foremost, Miles and Wood are fans of Doctor Who, or else they wouldn't be writing this series in the first place.

Highly recommended to fans of Doctor Who, especially those brought in by the 2005 series.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely well done despite a slight attitude problem.......2005-02-04

In interviews conducted for the I, Who series of books (published, like this volume, by Mad Norwegian Press), Lawrence Miles made clear his disdain for backward-looking fans and his monomaniacal insistence that Doctor Who move ever forward in order to be at all interesting. (Since Miles has written a handful of Doctor Who novels himself, that seems to make him either a fan who wishes to be both of the fandom and simultaneously above it, or, alternately, a professional writer type who is "slumming it".) So it is perhaps not surprising that the overall tone of About Time 3 is one of superiority over the source material. The authors constantly make the point that they know how silly and flawed and poorly-made the Doctor Who TV program was, but that it was just so charming that people liked it. A not altogether invalid point, given that the series WAS flawed and silly much of the time, but a reference work aimed at fans of the show is not really an appropriate place to point such things out so forcefully and repeatedly.
Nevertheless, the collected data is, as advertised, exhaustive, ranging from continuity notes and information about each story's setting to behind-the-scenes anecdotes. The analysis is informative and thought-provoking, with the sections that explain how each story fits into the time it was made and broadcast being particularly interesting. And the critiques are presented thoughtfully and thoroughly, even if I disagree with their opinions much of the time. Even the sidebar essays (about things like when the UNIT stories actually take place and whether or not Doctor Who was really that chauvinistic) are genuinely fascinating, and to be fair Miles and Wood defend many aspects of the show eloquently. So, despite the slightly sneering bits that turn up on nearly every page, About Time 3 is a must-have reference volume for any more-than-casual Doctor Who fan, and hopefully the rest of the series will follow suit.

              Product Description

Constituting the largest reference work on "Doctor Who" ever written, the six-volume "About Time" strives to become the ultimate reference guide to the world’s longest-running science fiction program. Written by Lawrence Miles ("Faction Paradox") and long-time sci-fi commentator Tat Wood, "About Time" focuses on the continuity of "Doctor Who" (its characters, alien races and the like), but also examines the show as a work of social commentary. In particular, Miles and Wood dissect the politics and social issues that shaped the show during its unprecedented 26-year run (from 1963 to 1989), detailing how the issues of the day influenced this series. As part of this grand opus, About Time 1 examines "Doctor Who" Seasons 1 to 3 (1963 to 1966) -- the show's every beginnings, with William Hartnell in the lead role. Among other things, About Time 1 answers such vitally important "Who" questions as "Can You Change History, Even One Line?", "What's the Timeline of the Daleks?" and "Is His Name Really Who?"

              5 out of 5 stars A great history..........2007-08-05

not only of the start of a great show, but also details British television history and pop culture to put it into a larger context. Sometimes academic, sometimes fanwankish, but never tiresomely pedantic or boring. Can't wait to pick up the next volumes.

4 out of 5 stars Nearly definitive, practically essential.......2006-03-04

The "About Time" books are kind of like TV's Dr. Gregory House. He's smug, rude, disdainful, and in general a colossal pain the butt. On the other hand, he's RIGHT so much of the time, and just so darned interesting to be around that you just can't tell him to stuff it and leave. These books are the same way. "About Time 1" is the first volume of the series in terms of content, but the fourth to be published, and the weirdly two-faced attitude the authors have displayed since the beginning continues to assert itself pretty forcefully. They regularly take what can only be described as "potshots" at both the show itself and the show's fans. Almost every positive comment about one of the stories covered in this book is accompanied by a despairing, off-handed lament about how much worse the show became later on. Wood and Miles also frequently ridicule various examples of silly and/or obsessive fan behavior. Yet even while they're spending so much time slagging off both their subject matter and their intended audience, by creating such an exhaustive and erudite examination of "Doctor Who," they're implicitly showing both show and fans a substantial amount of respect.

And authorial biases aside, the books just keep getting better. Either by accident or by design, each successive volume seems to go deeper in its analyses, to be more insightful and, thus, more entertaining than the one before. "About Time 1" deals with the first three seasons of the show, from its 1963 inception to the 1966 story "The War Machines," so in this volume we get a hugely enlightening look at the cultural and technological environment in which the show was born and the various societal and literary contexts that informed each story. As an American born in the early 1970s, these informative "Where Does This Come From?" subsections were unfailingly interesting. We also get two dozen new sidebar essays explaining various tangential matters in great depth; some are literary, such as "What Kind of Future Did We Expect?"; some are somewhat scientific, such as "What Makes the TARDIS Work?", which touches on some rudimentary quantum physics; and some are metatextual, such as "What Are These Stories REALLY Called?"

So if you are anything more than a casual fan of "Doctor Who," I would honestly say that you owe it to yourself to own, or at least read, these books. Regardless of the aforementioned problems, when all is said and done I think the "About Time" series will stand as the definitive analysis of TV's longest-running sci-fi program. Like Dr. House, its personal shortcomings won't be able to disguise the fact that it's simply unbeatable in its chosen field.

              5 out of 5 stars Detailed.......2006-02-25

Lawrence and Tat continue their absolutely exhaustive review of the whole of Doctor Who. Yet again ther eis more information than you can shake a stick at. This time we explore the Hartnell era with emphasis on the cultural and political landscape at the time. Essential for the serious fan

One of the basic practices of Buddhism is to remain mindful, and one way this is achieved is simply through reminders. Josh Bartok, a publishing-house editor and practitioner of Zen Buddhism, has mined the literature for a yearlong collection of daily reminders. Ranging in length from a sentence to a short page, these reminders include poetry, meditation instruction, practical advice, and thoughts on the way things are. A cynic might notice that all of the selections are from books published by the editor's own press, and therefore dismiss the book as a sly attempt at self-promotion, but when the selections are brilliant quotes from the likes of Ayya Khema, Alan Wallace, Milarepa, Henepola Gunaratana, Martine Batchelor, and the Dalai Lama, one wishes to read them rather than dismiss them. In beautiful verse, the Chinese poet Chia Tao tells of a bell heard during a stroll in the mountains at daybreak. The monk Henepola Gunaratana reminds us that "pain is inevitable, suffering is not." Retain this kind of inspiration throughout the day, and peace will be yours. --Brian Bruya

Like its predecessor, Daily Wisdom, More Daily Wisdom draws on the richness of Buddhist writings to offer a spiritual cornucopia to illuminate life and inspire readers day after day, year after year. Sources span a spectrum from ancient sages to modern teachers, from monks to laypeople, from East to West, from poetry to prose. Entries come from some of Buddhism's most renowned figures: Bhante Gunaratana (Mindfulness in Plain English); Lama Zopa Rinpoche (Transforming Problems into Happiness); Lama Yeshe (Introduction to Tantra); Bhikkhu Bodhi; and, of course, the Buddha and other ancient luminaries. Subjects range from the contemplative (beginner’s mind, loving-kindness) to the curative (addiction, pain) to the charmingly commonplace (breakfast, tooth-brushing). The book's blend of useful insights for daily reflection, glimpses of Buddhist teachings, and moments of levity, along with its inviting layout and French flaps, makes More Daily Wisdom a thoughtful gift, a wonderful keepsake, and a tool for transformation.
