A Feminist Psychological Novel.......2007-03-22
This 1992 novel by Nobel Laureate Francois Mauriac seemed to me to be one of the earliest feminist novels not written by a woman. Mauriac's protagonist, Therese, is a very intelligent, reasonably well-educated, independent woman who marries on a whim and suffers for it, making everyone around her suffer as well. Her simpleton husband tries nearly everything to make her be an obedient wife, but nothing works. Although Mauriac is often regarded as a Catholic novelist, this protagonist is in no way a conservative model for early twentieth century wives. Therese is the anti-hero who never yields.

ambivalance unveiled.......2006-09-24
firm founded catholic that he was, mauriac was horrified that many readers find therese a sympathetic character; mauriac insisted he intended her to be "a monster," the embodiment of evil. this is one of those books (it has an odd affinity w/madame bovary, another heroine of confused intentions and behaviors)that readers will turn to again and again out of a difficult-to-satisfy desire to decode therese and/or themselves. therese's crimes are arguably commited by the third hand, the one we all generally keep behind our backs. this is a book that opens ones eyes to oneself: assuming one has periods of dispising ones spouse and/or child and/or friends and relatives; assuming that the people we are when things are going well and happily are frequently not the people we become when we are thwarted, disappointed, seemingly incapable of flight OR fight.
I DON'T READ FRENCH! THE BOOK IS WRITTEN IN FRENCH!.......2004-12-01
THERE WAS NOT ONE WORD ABOUT THE BOOK BEING IN FRENCH! I FEEL LIKE I'VE BEEN RIPPED OFF!
wonderful.......2000-07-16
This is the best French literary work ever! You must read it!
Psychological portrait of a wife, friend, and criminal........1998-12-18
Mauriac's psychological portrait of Therese Desqueyroux beautifully illustrates the infinite complexity of the human character. Therese goes through so many phases in this book, so many explanations of possible motivation for her strange crime, some of them deeply touching and innocent, some abhorable. It is impossible to choose one opinion of Therese and stick to it throughout the novel. At times she deserves only hatred, at times pity and love. Her ever-changing state of mind makes the reader question whether or not it is ever possible for a person to objectively look back on their lives. Depending on her state of mind, Therese creates very different interpretations of her past. Mauriac engages the reader in trying to figure out what has brough Therese to the level of a criminal. Is it the fact that she grea up without a mother? That her husband does not love her? That she was born into the wrong atmosphere? That some people are simply born evil? And what makes this book so fascinating is that no single answer can satisfy Therese. Mauriac takes the reader through Therese's unhappy life, as well as her own analysis of why she has become a woman who loves to suffer and to watch others suffer, as she tries to convince herself that happiness does not exist.

Book Description
For the past two years, while the sun was setting on the iconic F-14 Tomcat, aviation photographer and author Erik Hildebrandt has been capturing the final defining moments of the few remaining F-14 squadrons in the US Navy Fighter community. Anytime, Baby! is an unforgettable collection of final-phase Tomcat milestones captured and preserved forever in some of the most detailed and dynamic photographic compositions Hildebrandt has ever attempted. From riding along with VF-211, the last squadron to ever fly the F-14A, to flying with VF-32 on the last deployment of the F-14B in the Arabian Gulf in 2005, Hildebrandt has been witness to the end of an era. Anytime, Baby! is an important historic record as much as it is an artistic and beautiful tribute to the most popular American fighter in history. A true "must-have" addition for the aviation enthusiasts as well as former and current Navy and Marine Corp service personnel.
Customer Reviews:
Great Coffe Table Turkey Book.......2007-04-10
This book has some of the best tomcat photography you will find. The text, while interesting could be a little more heavy on the history of each of the fighter wings it covers. Hildebrandt's effort is nonetheless stunning. I only wish I could do this kind of photography for a living!
Perfect Tribute to the Greatest Fighter.......2007-01-26
If you loved the Tomcat with passion, and miss the sound of those two General Electric jet engines on a hot clear day, this is the perefect book. Beautiful photos , it was a fitting tribute to one of the greatest fighters ever built.
The Last Days of a Now Retired WarBird.......2007-01-23
I must be getting old. I remember when the F-14 Tomcat was just being designed and adopted by the Navy. Now we are telling them 'Good Bye.'
The F-14 entered service with the Navy in 1972. It was retired from the U.S. Navy fleet on 22 September 2006, having been replaced by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. As of 2007, only the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force still flies the aircraft. Where did those 34 years go?
This book is a memorial to the Tomcat. It's a photographic essay of the last seven squadrons (down from over thirty) to fly the big bird. The photography is beautiful, mostly in the air, but quite a few on the deck of the big ships, and a couple very sadly showing the old birds sitting out in the field, stripped of unit ID, stripped of their soul.
It's a beautiful book, and an excellent tribute to the men and their very beautiful, very high performance machines.
Anytime, Baby!.......2007-01-16
A great book on the F-14 for anyone who loves airplanes. Great pictures, great human interest stuff, facts I didn't know.
"Anytime, Baby!" is a must have book!.......2007-01-10
Erik Hildebrandt provided some superb photography in his latest book. If your a Tomcat fan this is a must have addition to your book collection. The book is just as fascinating to read as well. The text was co-authored by former F-14 drivers - Dale Snodgrass and Dave Parsons, Cdr. Richard LaBranche and Cdr. James Howe - the last officers to command VF-31, and a few other noteworthy individuals that had a part during the Tomcat's final days. The book includes photo essays of the last few squadrons to use the Tomcat including VF-32, VF-211, VF-11, VF-143, VF-101, VF-213 and VF-31. Erik also included equally impressive photos of the F-18E and F Super Hornet. The F-14 may be gone but the true fighter spirit will live on in the squadrons that flew her. Well Done!

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-08-02
If ever a couple was in need of pre-marital counseling, it's these two protagonists. It's surprising that the navy chaplain and bride's preacher father didn't insist upon it instead of pressuring them into a hasty marriage. The first half of this book was painful to endure because of the volitile and angry way Hannah and Riley interacted with each other. They seemed to be together for all the wrong reasons, constantly fighting over issues that could have easily been resolved through open communication. One of the reasons I love Debbie Macomber's writing is that her characters don't usually fall into this type of incessant bickering, so this couple's eventual conversion towards more respectful and loving banter was a welcome relief and redeemed the second half of the story.
Debbie Macomber's best, IMHO.......2005-09-30
I have read quite a few Debbie Macomber books, and so far, I thought this one was the best that I read so far. It was a great story, the characters were real, with emotional depth, and the pacing was great - everything was just right, and I enjoyed this one very much.
This is a classic we-made-a-baby, now-we-must-marry, storyline, and this one is hard to do well, and even harder to do well and realistically in a contemporary setting, yet in this story, Debbie Macomber manages to really make it work.
Hannah is a minister's daughter. She was engaged to a wonderful man, but he has just died, before they could marry. Angry, sad, and bitter, Hannah meets Riley Murdoch in a set of unusual circumstances, and, in a wholly uncharacteristic gesture, she throws herself at him. When Riley realizes that this is her first time, he tries to talk to her, but she disappears before he can get any information at all. Riley tries to find her - but without even a last name, it is pretty hopeless - until, Riley meets her in an unexpected way - at the other end of the *metamorphical* shotgun. Forced into a marriage neither of them wanted, do they even have a chance?
This story was done exceptionally well, we feel both Hannah's and Riley's very real reservations, their very real and realistic emotions, as they have to work out what they *really* want - and how they will get there. I loved this story especially because it was about two people who are trying to do the right thing, about two people who both try - eventually - to rise above their anger and bitterness to try to create something beautiful, meaningful - and lasting. And, at the end, isn't that why I read romance?
The Best Navy Series Book.......2005-07-09
I loved this book and in my opinion, it was the best of the Navy series. Right from the beginning the book grabbed me and kept me glued to it's pages until I was done with it. I loved both characters and it was a delight to see them overcome their not so perfect situation and grow to love each other as they did. Debbie wrote another winner, one of her very best I believe. Do yourself a favor and read it, you won't be disappointed.
Wonderful!!!.......2001-08-01
This is a great book. I read this book while I was in high school many, many times. To this day, I can recall paragraphs off the top of my head. I loved the characters in this book. They were well thought out and there were no dangling issues left at the end. Enjoy on a rainy day under the covers.

"This is the richly colored, action-filled autobiography of Admiral Lockwood. Since his life was so closely intertwined with the development of the submarine as a weapon, it is also a biography of the U.S. Navy's Submarine Service and the development of the submarine itself."
I enjoyed this memoir quite a lot.

With a unique combination of foresight and perspective, Dozois continues to collect outstanding work by newcomers and established authors alike, reflecting the present state of the genre while suggesting its future directions. With the editor's annual summary of the year in the field, and his appendix of recommended reading, this book is indispensable for anyone interested in contemporary science fiction.
Customer Reviews:
1991's best. Consistently good.......2006-03-05
SF has come a long way.
The closest comparison I can perhaps find in my personal library is The Giant Book of Science Fiction Stories (Edited by Martin Greenberg) - 101 50s-70s magazine SF stories - and the difference is chalk and cheese. This may be an unfair comparison: Dozois' collections' stories are generally a few thousand words longer, however they add more than quantity. They still all have that key short SF story element, a novel `What if?' idea - but the way they realise these ideas is much more impressive than the bare bones of their predecessors. Maybe Greenberg was filling up space (although there are some excellent stories within the deluge), but Dozois was picking the cream from 1991. I could pick out some favourites, but each of these stories are undeniably well written. They all have individual recognisable characters - rather than stock ones. They can write potent settings, can pace a story. Alas these virtues are more the exception than the rule in much earlier fiction I've read. Maybe SF hasn't come a long way, rather I'm just fortunate to have found a good filter in Dozois which I didn't find in Greenberg.
You could validly look at a collection like this as a sampler to suggest whose novels might be worth seeking out. However I found myself really relishing the short story format again - rather I'm pleased that this is the 9th in a series, and I'll be seeking out other collections. If they're of this calibre - and this impressive consistency - I'm in for some excellent reading.
Wrong book description below.......1999-11-03
As with other editions of Gardner Dozois' collections, a Sci-Fi fan can't go wrong. A brief warning, however, the titles and reviews listed here belong to the 13th annual edition, and are not what you get in this edition.
The definitive best science fiction.......1999-10-21
One more volume in the definitive best science fiction series. If you want to read the best, here it is.

Great insights into New Testament spiritual gifts teaching.......2004-07-06
One of the many great qualities of this book is Carson's sharing pastoral insights about preserving church unity in the face of controversy over such things as charismatic teaching and practice.
It is a most helpful exegesis of a controversial part of the New Testament. Everyone will find something to disagree with here, but will also find much sane guidance.
Highly recommended
Definitive Works Grapples with Spiritual Gifts.......2003-09-21
I do not always agree with D.A. Carson (although I mostly do), but I always admire and appreciate him. He is a true scholar who tempers his great mind with a heart for God.
Dr. Carson has written a masterpiece! This volume is an intelligent and definitive grappling with a passage that focuses upon spiritual gifts: I Corinthians 12-14.
He devastates the non-charismatic viewpoint that claims the Bible teaches that tongues would end of themselves upon the completion of the New Testament canon or at the end of the apostolic age. He fortifies (unintentionally) the view of non-charismatics who say, "God can give the gift of tongues today. But we do not see the real thing, so He must not be doing that right now." Although he strains to conclude otherwise, this is where his evidence could easily lead. His actual conclusion is that the gift of tongues is being given today, but not meant for all and not intended to be the believer's focus.
Carson likewise corrects common charismatic abuses by proving the following: (1) every true believer has been baptized in the Spirit, (2) there is no one gift possessed by every believer, but we should seek prophecy over tongues, (3) it is not God's will for all believers to be healed, but God can and does heal miraculously as He pleases.
Carson's exegesis is reasonable, respectful, well-informed, scholarly to the nth degree, clearly delineated and thoroughly documented. Although he addresses the entire text, he particularly focuses upon two of the most controversial spiritual gifts: tongues and prophecy. His views regarding prophecy are about the same as Wayne Grudem's: New Testament prophets do not bear the authority of Old Testament prophets (rather, New Testament authority is vested in the Apostles). Prophecy is God bringing something to mind, and the prophet may mix his own thoughts and thus muddy the prophecy. Unlike OT prophets who were labeled as true of false, in the NT, individual prophecies are to be weighed. There is much to commend this view.
His work on tongues is more exhaustive (but still not complete-see my list of unanswered questions below). He points out that repeated evaluation by linguists have shown that tongues are not human languages. He argues that some legitimate tongues may be coded languages or patterns (for example, a language with its vowels omitted). This is somewhat questionable, though possible (since apparently there has never been a study conducted by expert code-breakers).
What is most fascinating is his conclusion that no verifiable correct interpretations of tongues have been made. Although thorough tests have not been done, Carson mentions a friend who recorded a recitation of a passage in Greek and presented the tape to two individuals claiming the gift of interpretation. They presented interpretations that differed from one another and had nothing to do with the text. He writes, "I know of no major work that has researched hundreds or thousands of examples; but it could be a very revealing study."
But based on this and other similar accounts, we might conclude that if God is not (to the best of our knowledge) truly giving the gift of interpretation, then tongues are not for use in church meetings (where interpretation is demanded). In essence, tongues at this point are limited to private use and personal edification.
Although pensive and thorough, Carson has still left a number of unanswered questions, including: (1) How do the tongues seen in evangelical charismatic assemblies vary from those seen in Hindu, Mormon, or Animistic groupings? (2) Can every human being, saved or not, speak in ecstatic utterances? If so, is this the basis for Biblical tongues (since lost people can often teach and yet we find a New Testament gift of teaching, etc.)? (3) If Christian tongues were not qualitatively different from tongues-speakers in non-Christian religions, then are they really miraculous? (4) Should we allow people to speak in tongues, if interpreted, even though the evidence we do have seems to indicate that the gift of interpretation may not exist in our time or in our country? (5) What about the possibility that some of these gifts are distributed more where the Gospel is being established (as opposed to where the church has been embedded)? Is there evidence to commend or reject this theory? Is it possible that the reportedly high level of miracles in Indonesia is an example of this?
This book is not written at a popular level, but challenges the mind. Pastors and theologians will find it stimulating (and it really is not difficult to understand), but its style, vocabulary, evaluations and refutations may be a stretch for the dedicated laymen.
I love books like this!
Thorough and useful.......2003-03-31
Carson's book is relatively short at less than 200 pages, but it offers an excellent exegesis of 1 Corinthians 12-14. He draws on the best of recent scholarship, and is thorough in covering the major issues. Even if you disagree with his conclusions, he will prove helpful in highlighting questions and points of debate pertinent to the interpretation of perhaps one of the most controversial parts of the New Testament.
The author is neither a cessationist nor a charismatic with an axe to grind, and deals with the text fairly even-handedly. As a quasi-appendix (though it is actually probably a third of the book), he addresses a few relevant hermeneutical issues in relation to the book of Acts, and offers some pastoral reflections on the charismatic movement. Overall, Showing the Spirit is a comprehensive, yet succinct, introduction to the main exegetical issues in the chapters it addresses, and a number of great insights are to be found within its pages.
Incidentally, you could probably find a cheaper edition somewhere (my copy, published by Paternoster, UK, cost me less than £5 new just a few years ago).

Excellent book on these 'charismatic' passages.......2000-11-16
Carson is one of the most respected theologians in the world today. Though more conservative than charismatic, in this book he writes almost like a biblical charismatic.
This book is a must for all charismatics interested to study 1 Corinthians 12-14 - a passage that is much disputed and which concerns charismatic issues.
Carson holds to a non-cessationistic view in this book. He also accepts Wayne Grudem's view of prophecy.
I particularly liked the way he handled tongues prophecy in his exposition on 1 Corinthians 14 - all charismatics need to read Carson on tongues here. He agrees that tongues are still given but he wants to see it used properly according to biblical stipulations.
His fifth and last chapter states some of his views on things like Baptism of the Spirit, 2nd blessing theology, revelation, historical evidence and also his review of the charismatic movement - which he comes out very positive.
Overall an excellent book that both conservatives and charismatics can learn from. Very balanced!
