Book Description
This wonderful folktale reveals some of the down-to-earth wisdom of the indigenous peoples of Chiapas. At the same time, it provides us with a fresh perspective on the struggles of the people there. They fight to conserve their culture and a vision of the world which they see as flowering with holiness-a holiness that cannot be measured in dollars or defined by politics.
The text for La Historia de los Colores is taken from the communique dated October 27, 1994 from Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos to the Mexican People. Originally published in Mexico with illustrations by Domitila Dominguez as La Historia de los Colores © 1996 by Colectivo Callejero, Guadalajara.
Who is Marcos?
Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos is the military strategist and spokesperson for the Zapatistas, an indigenous guerrilla movement in Mexico. It is his person, more than any other factor, that has pushed the Zapatista movement and the plight of the indigenous people in Mexico onto the international scene. Marcos continues to be the focus of media attention-in Mexico, in the States, and internationally, despite the Mexican government's attempts to discredit him.
On New Year's Day, 1994, Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos and the Zapatistas, wearing their trademark ski masks, erupted on the world scene by declaring war on the Mexican government and attacking military installations in San Cristobal, Chiapas. Since that time, Marcos-because of his charm, intelligence and mystique-has become a post-modern revolutionary hero. In his communiques to the Mexican people, he has often related folktales and stories that reflect the culture and wisdom of the indigenous peoples of Chiapas.
But no one seems to know who Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos is. The Mexican Government claims he is Rafael Guillen, but they're literalists. He says he's a Mexican like any other, born somewhere between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and between the northern and southern borders. He says he wears a ski mask because he is no longer whoever he was.
"As citizens of the United States, our apathy, over-consumption and lack of moral political conviction has created situations all over the world similar to the

review of The Story of Colors.......2002-08-14
We want to share our experience as parents upon purchasing this book for our daughter so that others are not deceived into thinking that this is a children's book, when, in fact, it is not. A book supposedly geared towards 4-8 year-olds should not have as subject material "making love" between the characters (three times in the story) or smoking cigarettes and pipes as the story unfolds. It is not that it is not a good book, but that it is not good for children. Fortunately we read the book before presenting it to our daughter and saw what was written. It is disappointing that Amazon.com would qualify this as a children's book. We will be returning the book.
The Story of Colors.......2002-01-29
I learned of this children's book while watching a documentary of Subcomandante Marcus on World Link TV. I was excited to see that this book was available for purchase on amazon.com. After reading it's glowing reviews I was excited to order a copy for myself and one for my niece's birthday, she would be turning 5. The book is recommended for children ages 4-8. Upon receiving the books and reading it's contents, I have to disagree. I do not believe that the contents are appropriate for young children. There are several references to both smoking cigarettes, pipes and making love. There is also a photograph on the jacket of Marcos in his signature black ski mask (perhaps scary to a 5 year old girl) The story by Marcos is both beautiful and engaging and the illustrations by Domi are exquisite. I decided to keep one copy for myself (and LOVE it), but returned the one for my niece.
Make Rainbows, not War.......2001-03-22
Who was that masked man?
Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos has crafted a different kind of revolution and with it, a different revolutionary story. This isn't another boring tome, that competes with the author's Kalishnakov repair manual for dreary tedium. In this book, targetted at children (and those who were once children), we read of colorful birds and quarrelling gods. More powerful fare than class warfare or guerrilla strategies.
The book begins with a walk up a hill in Chiapas. Well, actually, we read "I light my pipe, and after three ceremonial puffs, I begin to tell you--just the way old Antonio used to tell it--"
Already we are invited to a different world, a world where stories don't appear in living color between commercials, as a means of inducing consumption. If we accept this invitation, succeeding pages take us up a hill where "el viejo Antonio" takes time out from a journey to share a more colorful universe with the "Insurgente."
The masked revolutionary turns back and sits down with the old one, who ignores his concern about reaching the village before the rain falls. Rain only endangers evil witches in Oz. Here in Chiapas, something more important bursts into our constructed reality, and we are transported to a world of black and white. No real colors. Only grey, to keep the black of night and the white of day from bumping into each other too hard. This is a world where the seven gods who created all things have disappeared. In this bleak landscape, only blind people and quarelsome, sleeply gods remain.
In the course of the story we learn many things. We hear the story of an unfamiliar culture. It's a fun story, playful, suitable for children. And it's a fable, a morality play about many practical things--looking where you're walking, not climbing too high, just about everything except running with a machete in your hands.
But, beneath these relatively harmless layers, lies more substantial material. The story evokes archetypes largely ignored by our plastic Ken & Barbie culture. We seek comfort and security over nearly every other goal. La Historia de los Colores insinuates that breakthroughs come only when comfort is disrupted. The theme of the story, moving from a perspective of Black and White (with a little gray buffer zone) to Full Spectrum Color, well, many a doctoral dissertation could be written about the philosophical, psychological, sociological and political implications. But let's not engage in that level of intellectual masturbation. Read the book. Hear the story. Allow the brilliant illustrations to color your day.
Why are you still reading this review? El viejo Antonio isn't going to sit on that hilltop forever, catching his breath. The rainbow will fade and Insurgente Marcos will reach the village. Then the only colors you'll have will plaster the screen of your TV, encouraging you to buy something to make you forget that you just missed out on an epic spiritual experience masquerading as a children's book.
Fresh air for the kids!.......2001-01-29
This book is for those who come after, for those whose world we, adults, are supposed to help build. This is to tell them: "Yes, it is possible. Dreams are necessary and possible." And when the time comes to defend your dreams, just do it. For those with bare Spanish the writing style may look a little startling, as it is carefully crafted in the Mayan undertaking of Cervantes' language. Yet, this adds up to the charm and magic of Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos' book. If this wasn't enough there's the individual story of this book published after the wimpy Nat'l Endowment for the Arts withdrew its support. Domitila's colored images are the perfect envelope for La Historia de los Colores. I wish I was 5 again and that someone would have given me this book... How much would I have learned!

A wonderful collection of Love that's not exactly American-style........2005-08-11
Are you ready for a great novella of love stories by today's hot romance authors? Janelle Denison, Tori Carrington and Leslie Kelly bring you a wonderful collection of Love that's not exactly American-style in That's Amore! Cultural family traditions are intertwined into each story - from a Hawaiian arranged marriage custom, to a Greek wedding and then onto a Chicago style Italian family wedding.
STORIES INCLUDE:
Meet the Parents by Janelle Denison: Leila, a hawaiian daughter is expected to marry a Hawaiian groom that her parents select for her. But, Leila has plans of her own.....and the groom is a California bad boy. Can he persuade Leila's parents that he's the one for their daughter?
I Do, Don't I? by Tori Carrington: Efi is ready to marry her childhood sweetheart Nick - in just one week. The only problem is - their families seem determined to keep them apart and turn the wedding into a Greek tragedy. Each chapter is another day leading up to the wedding day, or will there be a wedding?
There Goes the Groom by Leslie Kelly: Luke is engaged to 'a nice Italian Girl' (aka: bridezilla)...but when he ends up having to check on the wedding dress more than once (his fiancé just can't seem to make the appointments), he ends up falling for the dressmaker, Rachel, who is designing his fianceés bridal gown. The problem, he's engaged to be married and Rachel isn't Italian. What's a guy to do?
All 3 stories are linked by the online favor company [...]. There's even bonus features including a list of wedding customs and their origin, top ten lists and a GREAT bonus read!
That's Amore! is a fabulous read.......2005-05-20
Domeafavor.com mixes up the wedding favors for three novella wedding stories in a fabulous book called, THAT'S AMORE! by Janelle Denison, Tori Carrington, and Leslie Kelley.
I loved that these stories were about family traditions during the most nerve-wracking of times...wedding preparation. Probably why I myself eloped.
From Hawaiian customs to another big fat funny Greek wedding to a Chicago styled Italian affair all three stories are steeped in tradition...and mayhem. Don't miss this one. A great summer read for all the June weddings you'll attend this year and wonder what the couple endured to say "I do".
And I also want to mention I really enjoyed the extras in the bonus section at the back of the book. Sort of like the extra DVD features I look forward to on my favorite movies.
Pick up a copy of THAT'S AMORE! and enjoy.
well written pre-wedding tales.......2005-05-04
"Meet the Parents" by Janelle Denison. Mainlander Jason Crofton meets Hawaiian Leila Malekala while on vacation. They fall in love over the course of the next few days. However he must persuade her parents he is the one for their daughter because they expect her to wed native Kalani Pakolu and have purebred grandchildren, not hybrids from a California haole.
"I Do, Don't I?" by Tori Carirngton. In one week Efi Panayotopoulou and Nick Constaninos are to marry in a Greek wedding in Michigan. Instead of a blissful final seven days, the extended family drives Efi and Nick into reconsidering what they are getting into. Everyone is acting crazy at home, at the family owned My Big Fat Pastry Shop, and anywhere that two Greeks meet in the state especially if one is the Crete spinster.
"There Goes the groom" by Leslie Kelly. In Chicago, bridal boutique owner Rachel Grant dreams of being the bride when DA Lucas Santori says "I do"; however instead the Italian Stallion is marrying the "Nazi bride" of Taylor Ave, Maria Martinelli. Lucas has had doubts ever since Maria became "bridezilla and now that he has begun to know Rachel his reservations have grown enormously as he is attracted to her even if she fails the family ethnicity test.
Linked by the internet wedding favors firm domeafavor.com, the three stories are well written with likable lead protagonists and a wonderful horde of ethnic secondary characters. Each of the fun tale adheres to the theme of the struggles just before the vows so that readers will feel like honored guests at the nuptials.

Book Description
Slippery Jim DiGriz. The galaxy's greatest thief and con artist: the Stainless Steel Rat. For novel upon novel, Jim DiGriz has outfoxed the forces of conventionality, cutting a stylish swathe through dozens of star systems. Now, Slippery Jim and his beautiful wife Angelina find themselves becalmed on a painfully boring backwater planet, with nothing to do but practice their skills at computer crime. Then they meet a billionaire who claims to be 40,000 years old--who offers them millions of credits to investigate a string of unsolved interstellar bank robberies. Robberies which, it turns out, always happen when the circus is nearby. . . .In a sense, The Stainless Steel Rat has always been a high-wire performer. Now, as he infiltrates the world of the galactic big top, he's taking the role to extremes . . . and drawing the attention of more dangerous ringmasters and strongmen than he ever expected. Will this be his final show? Has Slippery Jim finally leapt for his last trapeze? Naaah.

Super Reader.......2007-08-26
This Rat adventure is a bit better. The richest man in the universe comes to Jim and asks him to find out who is robbing all his financial institutions.
It is not all that simple, though, but luckily Jim has his whole family with him, and has recently received some training from a master magician as part of his new employment.
Sneakiness, doublecross and scamming ensue.
The End?.......2006-03-09
This book is a somewhat disappointing end to the Stainless Steel Rat series. It is really only disappointing because the others are so good. This book is worth a read because it may be the last one written and it does an okay job of wrapping up the series.
Light-hearted sci-fi comedy, emphasis on light. =).......2004-03-24
Hello, fellow readers!
This book was purchased mainly to complete my current SSR collection, and although decent at a few places, it lacked the comedy "punch" that the others in the series had. In my opinion, the comedy aspect in this book compared to the others in the series is the worst, but then again it did provide a nice mystery, which I reluctantly followed. Still, it was worth the few bucks I paid. Don't get if you don't follow the SSR series, though, it'll be a waste of time.
New Rat Not So Rusty.......2004-01-26
I must admit that I was a little hesitant about reading SSR Joins The Circus. As a big rat fan of many years I had been disappointed by Harrison's last couple of attempts. SSR Sings The Blues and Goes To Hell were both pretty poor in comparison to earlier rat books so it was with almost reluctance that I read his latest chapter in the life of Jim DiGriz.
However SSR Joins The Circus is a pretty good rat book. The story is well paced and exciting enough to keep you interested and the world of Fettorr is well developed and interesting. Not as good as Harrison's earlier ones but non the less a quite enjoyable read. The main villain in very menacing and has poor old Jim on the ropes for the majority of the tale, but this is also one of the books major flaws. DiGriz doesn't seem anywhere near as sharp as he used to be, yes he pulled off a couple of nice capers to appease his blackmailer but you get the distance feeling that poor old Jim is getting a little dim witted in his later years.
Once again he is forced to rely upon the twins to get him out of tight scrapes. I have personally never been a fan of the twins as they provide Jim with an easy escape route anytime things get tough instead of doing it himself. That plus the fact that Harrison can't tell them apart anymore and gets them mixed up towards the end of the book. Also the book has a number of typos and you get the feeling that it was thrown togeather very fast.
Yet despite these shortcomings SSR Joins The Circus is a pretty good read if you enjoy the exploits of the Stainless Steel Rat as I do. Not Harrison's best effort of behalf of good old Jim, but certainly not his worst either.
3 out of 5
The SSRat not on his highest wire........2001-11-19
Throughout the years, I have always been a rat fan at heart. I read and re-read all of James diGriz's! adventures over and over. (for a factual statement, his last name is spelled like that! diG not DiG!) They are a master mind of work, until this one came. It's a great book with a good story line, but it has so many errors and loop-holes, you could drive a station wagon through them.
But, if we were to look past all the errors and all the grammer points, we can see the old rat shining through. It's a great book, but a lousy book to end on. I'm 100% sure that this is not the last of the rat. That I will bet my life on! If you were a true rat fan you would remember that old diGriz will vacation for a while, but then find that boring and have an itch for action. Let's just hope that the Stainless Steel Rat hasn't gotten rusty.

Trance dance is fantastic.......2007-08-07
Good book, well written and helped me understand more about my five rhythms dancing experiences. What I found a bit challenging to understand (which is why i gave this a 4 not a 5) was the whole breathing through the nose explanation. He spoke as if breathing through the mouth was a lower way of breathing, he does not even consider what a person can do who has inflamed nose and can only breath through mouth like me. Other than that the rest of the book was great.
This book was from the beginning of my journey!.......2002-04-10
This book was VERY inspiring to me and without It I would not have developed the same way. When I first got it about 6 or so years ago I read it many times and highlighted almost every word on every page. I highly recommend this to anyone on a spiritual path especially those involved in dance of any kind. This book may positively and powerfully alter your perception of dance and the posibility of visionary experience and natualy feelings of ecstacy after falling under the trance of the dance. Check it out!
Execellent extreme and informative.......1999-05-07
I have the CD shamans breath and wish to obtain the other CD's mentioned in the book as the music is excellent, a unique blend of traditional trible sounds with synthized sounds creating a potent dance mix. I have heard nothing like it since and coundn't obtain the above mentioned CD's. The CD is a 1995 Island production by Joe Galdo & Frank Natale. This CD would be perfect for an intamate loud party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Great music, not a whole ton of traditional yoga asanas.......2003-05-03
I love the music on this CD, so I definitely think of it as a worthwhile buy. However, the workout itself is a complement to a regular yoga practice. It doesn't have at all the same feel you would get by going to a yoga class - it's more like Shiva uses yoga principles to put you in a place where you can trance dance. Personally, I enjoy the structure of traditional yoga, so this workout may not be for me. That said, I really, really love the music, and it's great that she includes a CD with just the music. I plan to do my own home yoga practice using that.
The most useful cd in my collection.......2003-01-22
I am very pleased with the purchase of this cd. Shivarea class has
a process that took me to a deeper state of ecstatic meditation.
She starts with invocation and prana conciousness, then moves on to bringing movement and fluidity to the spine. Free rhythmic grounded movements lead to trance dance. Prana yoga follows. The session ends with kirtan, and a beautiful prayer. Shivarea also brings Poetry to different sgments of her class. Simple and powerful...
Fabulous!.......2002-03-13
This is a low impact workout that gets your heart pumping yet manages to relax you at the same time. As a bellydancer, I found many connections between the circular, undulating and figure 8 movements in one of the trance dance sections with middle eastern dance. The music is Indian inspired and the second CD is lovely just to listen to and unwind.
Fabulous!.......2001-12-13
Geoffrey Gordon's music is awesome--the CD starts out with slow, hypnotic music that increases in intensity with each track. Shiva Rea's instructions are excellent, and trance dance is just plain fun. You start out with a fluid, flowing yoga series that gradually moves into an all-out free-form dance, then slows back down to yoga and total relaxation. It feels goooood! I love the fact that there are 2 CDs--one with instructions over the music, and one with music only.

A good book on MDMA.......2004-06-02
The definitive book on MDMA from raves to therapy. If you like this one other books I would recommend are Psychedelic Shamanism (Jim DeKorne), THe essential psychedelic guide(D M Turner), Psychedelics encyclopedia (Peter Stafford), Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas (Hunter S thomson), Junkie ( William S Burroughs), Speed (William Burroughs JR), TIHKAL (Alexander Shulgin), and PIHKAL (Alexander shulgin) just to get you started.
I recommend it, but..........2000-12-20
This book is excellent and I agree with all the other people that have reviewed it in a positive way. However, what surprised me is that Nicholas included very little about the bad effects of Ecstasy, such as first-time user panic attacks, negative effects that might occur (anxiety, claustrophobia, fear of others, midweek crash, etc.) I agree totally with him that E should have never been made illegal, but I feel that he was (rest in peace) so passionate about the good part of E that he forgot that E has a definite downside. Ignoring this downside can make some readers think that E is ALL positive. I recommend this book because still it's very informative and obviously well-researched, I just want potential readers (and E users) to keep in mind that Ecstasy is a strong substance that should be used with respect.
Excellent Work!!.......2000-10-08
Of all the books on MDMA I've read this is by far the best. Very well organized and goes through everything concerning MDMA from its legal status to the chemistry behind it. The text is very easy to understand even for those who do not know much about this subject. All his statements are backed by solid evidence derived from independent research and real life stories. Saunders gives the reader a chance to decide for himself, rather than telling the reader 'This is what I looked up so this is what I think, and therefore what you think as well'. I would recommend this book to everyone. The author has dedicated his life to this subject, as indicated by the quality of his work.
A very informative book on E.......1999-08-03
Saunders, a brilliant and inquisitive man, writes of his experiences, research, and overall knoweledge of MDMA. From the chemical make-up to the trafficing of the drug, Saunders tackles the entire realm of Ecstasy and its culture. A must read for anyone curious about the subject - #1 Thesis on Ecstasy
