Know your Russian Lover (Male or Female).......2007-03-10
Many of the reviews claim this is outdated. Well, that is good... because more and more, Russia is becoming Westernized, and influenced by the United States. This "outdating" merely shows where they come from, the extreme, and somewhere in the middle (between pure US and pure Soviet Russia) is where you'll be. Most of the people you will be in a relationship in (hopefully) will say "born in the USSR" on their birth certificate (Unless you're in your teens, and in that case, how are you meeting these people?) and gone thought reorganization.
A stark contrast is needed otherwise you'll just be reading another relationship book. Soviet Russia has a greater contrast so is more fun to read than modern Russia. Think "more similar to the US" is the direction they're moving in... soon it'll be like looking in the mirror. Of course, Moscow leads in this Westernization.
This book shows a wide variety of stories to give the reader better insight, and shows that this type of relationship is not on a set course. Not only that, this is a fun read into the many aspects of the relationship, in different matters, from meeting, to finances, arguments, friends, and where to live. I cannot say how fun this is to read. So insightful too! On both sides: US male Russian female, and US female and Russian male.
The expectation is, this book is for men seeking mail-order brides, or men who go to Russia / an ex-Soviet state seeking a bride... but that is not true for many reading the book. Those are the people who have a wealth of information- and misinformation, at their hands. I had trouble finding information myself because you google the word "russia" in and you get wife connection sites. I had trouble finding information on the men. The women and their supposed dispositions are overexposed, and who knows if what comes up is real, or what they think you want to hear. But this book is not geared for the Russian bride industry at all. This book is geared more for people in real relationships, not the ones shrouded in pretenses. It has wonderful insights for both US male, Russian Female AND US female, Russian Male relationships.
Great, enjoyable stories-- and I hated having to finish the book. I want more! Some is true, some not of everyone. I confirmed with my Russian. But here is where I come from.
I am a female born in the United States of Chinese descent. When I met my Russian boyfriend 2 years ago I wanted to find out more about where he came from. This is what I knew about Russia before I met him. For date reference, my first and most memorable visit to Russia was in early 2006.
1) My ex-boyfriend's mother was Russian, and she hated me on the basis that I'm Chinese. I found out when I went to Russia that there are STILL skinheads who still hate Asian people and do violent things to them, such as beat them up. I was warned many times to watch out (but nothing bad happened). In fact, every single other Asian person I saw was a janitor, or a restaurant worker. People stared when I walked with my boyfriend because he is pure Russian/Caucasian. Now where is this Chinese/Russian relationship book? All I could find were China/Russia diplomatic relation articles on things such as political strategies and international trade. Not what I'm interested in!
2) Russians love it when you know a few Russian phrases. They were floored.. just as we expect EVERYone to speak English, no one expects a foreigner to speak Russian. My Russian skills got better as I drank more vodka!
3) Russians really like Americans. For many people, I was the first American they spoke to so though they were extremely shy at first to practice their English, they soon warmed up.
4) I watched "Moscow does not believe in Tears" a couple days before I met him, coincidentally... and YES a lot of the houses look like that - on the outside. The houses look Soviet-style on the outside but are really nice on the inside.
5) Yes, you can bribe your way out of a speeding ticket.
6) The housing market is expensive. I remember growing up and seeing images of Long lines in the USSR, Iron Curtain, Space Race... poor Russian Brides trying to get out... but now it is the #1 most expensive place in the world to live. In fact, this guy is one of the most successful people I know.
7) Not every girl there wants to marry a foreigner and get out. In fact, most don't. I did meet one who did though, and she did, and she's here.
Great book.......2005-08-24
This book is definately outdated but has some valueable advice for anyone considering relationship with a russian man or a women. I quite enjoyed it and it definately brought back some memories.
I couldn't help but feel sympathetic towards one of the reviewers who is obviously been burned by a bad marriege with a russian woman. Not every russian woman is ready to murder and sacrifice everyone for the "greater good". I think that particular viewer doesn't understand the russian mindset at all. Most russian women are much harder and much more ruthless than any american women. Lot of it has to do growing up in a enviroment that didn't allow you to be a sissy. I think for some american men this can be quite a shock. If submissive is what you are looking for DON'T MARRY RUSSIAN WOMAN! We tend to be agressive and sharp tongued(among other things). However, if you are looking for someone smart, well educated, good looking and loyal, russian woman may be for you. Good luck!
So you think you want to marry a Russian?.......2005-07-18
This book is a must read for any Western man considering a relationship with a Russian woman, particularly one they've met through an on-line introduction service.
I married a beautiful Russian woman in 2001 after a year of online communication and a year of living together. This book was purchased after my wedding, as my frustration grew in our differing viewpoints and value systems.
Over the years, I have accepted this relationship as a divine opportunity to acquire grace. If you are egotistical, judgmental, or have pride, I would strongly caution against marriage with a Russian. They come from a warrior tradition, and are not submissive in the least. The online joke about Russian women "only desire to keep a secure home, devoted to children and family" is only true for the Russian women who stay in Russia. The Russian women that wish to immigrate to the West are looking to improve their life, and you better be prepared for that.
If you enjoy running headfirst into a brick wall, backing up, and running headfirst into a brick wall again, then a Russian will be perfect for you. You will never bend the Russian will. Russians have the ability to endure untold hardships, and a strong survival instinct. Men in the west are weak by comparison.
Hitler did not understand the Russian mind. He surrounded both Stalingrad and Leningrad during WWII, laying siege to each. He cut off roads, rails, and air access to the cities. The Battle of Stalingrad raged for 199 days with total casualties of over 3,000,000. That was a cake walk compared to the Siege of Leningrad, which lasted 900 days. Hitler was determined to starve out the enemy at Leningrad (St. Petersburg). In response, the Russians ate shoe leather, boiled bookbindings to extract proteins, even consumed soil with a little sugar mixed in. Citizen deaths from starvation and exposure are estimated as high as 1.5 million people. In the end, the citizens of Stalingrad and Leningrad endured horrible deprivations and death, rather than surrender to a foreign will. Do you, an American, really think you can battle 900 days to change the Russian mind? It will never happen. It's like that song by Offspring, "the more you suffer, the more it shows you really care, right?"
I would recommend Wedded Strangers: The Challenges of Russian-American Marriages by Lynn Visson before anyone considers a relationship with a Russian woman, particularly one they met on the Internet.
Outdated Book Before The Internet.......2005-05-21
I bought the book and was let down about how dated the stories were during the days of the Iron Curtain. The book dedicates only one real chapter to the issues that have faced couples meeting since the fall of the Soviet Union and impact of the internet.
Secondly the book almost exclusively deals with the marriages of childless couples. To ignore the impact of children from the Former Soviet Union, coming with their Mom in a package deal, is to underestimate the challenges of the marriage and the stress it will place on the relationship.
Lastly while the book is collection of stories, it offers little advice and mostly annidotes. The "Culture Shock" books on Amazon and internet articles were far more helpful to prepare me for the challenges of this type of marriage.
A VERY useful book, and also a great read!.......2004-02-15
I have travelled to Russia twice so far and find the place mysterious, captivating, entrancing, and frustrating. The people are equally mesmerizing. I've wondered about some very different-from-California behavior I observed over there. This book explains a great deal of what I observed.
However, what makes this book special is that it is also a GREAT READ! It's entertaining enough to draw you in. You know all those books about life improvement you get but never read? This isn't one of them. It's a genuine "read for enjoyment" book, which in addition packs a lot of information.
I would recommend this book for anyone even remotely contemplating a cross-cultural relationship, or considering a trip to Russia.

An acclaimed legend in the field of fantasy and science fiction,
Lois McMaster Bujold returns to the vivid and perilous world of her previous masterworks, the Hugo Award-winning
Paladin of Souls and Hugo and World Fantasy Award-nominated
The Curse of Chalion, with an epic tale of devotion and strange destiny.
Prince Boleso is dead -- slain by a noblewoman he had intended to defile.
Lord Ingrey kin Wolfcliff has been dispatched to the remote castle of the late, exiled, half-mad royal to transport the body to its burial place and the accused killer, the Lady Ijada, to judgment. Ingrey's mission is an ugly and delicate one, for the imminent death of the old Hallow King has placed the crown in play, and the murder of his youngest son threatens to further roil already treacherous political waters. But there is more here than a prince's degenerate lusts and the fatal retribution it engendered. Boleso's dark act, though unfinished, inadvertently bestowed an unwanted mystical ""gift"" upon proud, brave Ijada that must ultimately mean her doom -- a curse similar to one with which Ingrey himself has been burdened since boyhood.
A forbidden spirit now inhabits the soul of Ijada, giving her senses she never wished for and an obligation no one sane would desire. At once psychically linked to the remarkable lady and repelled by what she carries within, Ingrey fears the havoc his own inner beast could wreak while on their journey, as he fights a powerful growing attraction ... and an equally powerful compulsion to kill.
The road they travel together is beset with dangers -- and though duty-bound to deliver Ijada to an almost certain execution, Ingrey soon realizes that she is the only one he dares trust. For a malevolent enemy with designs on a troubled kingdom holds Ingrey in his sway -- and without Ijada's aid and love, the haunted lord will never be able to break free and realize the great and terrible destiny bestowed upon him by the gods, the damned, and the dead.

A first class story.......2007-09-19
This is a first class story, with interesting characters and a good plot, which is what I expect from this author. Well worth the price.
Bujold is not at her best in this book........2007-07-25
Don't get me wrong, Bujold is a fantastic writer--far better than most. However, her 3 most recent offerings, The Hallowed Hunt and The Sharing Knife parts 1 and 2, are not, to me, even comparable to her previous books. I cannot give her less than 4 stars for these, but I am disappointed--her work normally rates 10.
Good........2007-06-06
The Hallowed Hunt is the third book in LMB's series about Chalion, and when I opened it I really didn't know what to expect. LMB is a fantastic author with a rare gift for characterisation, and has a knack for phrases that you'll want to flick back and read again later. They stick in your mind. That said, The Hallowed Hunt isn't really her best offering.
The story is about a faintly disgraceful and down-at-the-heels gentleman, sent to a castle to figure out who murdered a prince there recently. It turns out to be a girl, and surprise, surprise, they then manage to fall in love and have marvellous adventures. The whole thing is made far, far more interesting by the weird five-fold god system in place, and the very unique animal spirit system. Basically LMB doesn't do anything that anybody else has done, so if you think it's going to be the same as the last fantasy book you read, then you're very wrong.
I personally thought that `the Curse of Chalion' was amazing, and the two sequels haven't been to the high standards of the original. This doesn't make a hang of a lot of difference, because LMB is a great author and her worst is still leagues ahead of anyone else's best.
But the characters just don't appeal to me the way LMB's people normally do. They're just hard to identify with. You're left thinking that these people aren't the type of people you'd be friends with if you were given the choice.
But they things are very, VERY minor. Read the Curse of Chalion first. After you've read that, you want more Chalion. It's as simple as that, and then you'll want to read this one. Trust me, it's inevitable.
Audio Version Is Well Done.......2007-04-28
Often when I am looking at information about books I also want to know about the audio version. A bad narration for instance can ruin an audio book experience. Luckily, this one is read by a narrator who has no trouble with Bujold's made up names-- she is consistent in pronunciation and doesn't stumble. If I had my druthers, I would rather have had this book read by Lloyd James-- his narration of Curse of Chalion was very, very good. But this is still a good solid effort. If occasionally I had to ponder a section to realize that a line was thought rather than spoken by the character I still found the book to be an enjoyable listen.
Slow going at first, but gallops at the end.......2007-03-20
This past weekend I reread this book and saw a high school performance of Pippin. As a consequence, I'm in Charlemagne overload. The backstory to The Hallowed Hunt has many obvious parallels to the Bloody Verdict of Verden and yet those events are merely a jumping off point for one of Ms. Bujold's intricate morality plays. The plot is a little slow (with several wonderful wordscapes as compensation, say "pirate poet" three times fast) until the last 1/3rd, whereupon it takes off like a runaway horse. The characters are satisfyingly complicated and self-consistent.
I am a little frustrated that the whole story is told from the POV of the protagonist, Lord Ingrey kin Wolfcliff. I think the character insights from the he-thought-she-thought narrative of The Spirit Ring (another Bujold novel) was one of its best features and I really wanted to know more about the heroine's, Ijada's, motivations. Hmmpf.
So: excellent prose (as usual), interesting character motivations, complicated historical allusions, slow & talky start, slam-bang finish. Not one of Ms. Bujold's best, but definitely worth reading and rereading (a 10%er in Sturgeon's Law-speak).

King' Sacrafice will move you!.......2000-04-25
King's Sacrafice takes us back to the galaxy with Dion, Sagan and Maigrey. This novel picks up right where the prequel lets off......it is high paced, and leaves you on the edge of your seat. Scenes with Abdiel are very intense, and entertaining. I loved this novel due to the influx of new intriguing characters. See who will finally control the galaxy! Will it be Dion? Or Sagan? Or Maigrey? Or a combination of all three?
One of the best books I have read.......1999-01-04
I am not a usual fantasy or sci-fi reader, but a friend convinced me to read The Star of the Guardians series. In fact, the only fantasy I had read before this were The Lord of the Rings. I became addicted to The Star of the Guardians as soon as I picked them up! King's Sacrifice stuck out in my mind as the best one in the series though (I cried more than I did in Gone With the Wind and The Man in the Iron Mask(the book) combined). The best part about this book was the inexorable destinies of Lady Maigrey and Lord Sagan, and their romantic interactions with one another. Now don't get me wrong! It isn't all mush, it is very quick-paced! The mush just got to me the most. The only thing about this book is that the writing is good, but not excellent like Ray Bradbury or Margaret Atwood...in other words, it's not what you might call a contemporary classic. From a well read person, I think you would like it.
It will move even the most iron-hearted reader!!!!.......1998-11-20
This book, which was intended to be the conclusion of the Star of the Guardians series, is just about as different from the usual mass-marketable science fiction as you can get. Not only will you be alternatively mesmerized, horrified and deliriously excited by the graphic action, but your heart will truly go out to the main characters. You will marvel at their choices, rejoice at the outcomes or mourne their fates... do not think you will escape the conclusion dry-eyed.
And at the end, like the legions of Margaret Weis' fans, you will also want to raise a bloodsword to the courage of Lady Maigrey, Lord Sagan and Dion Starfire!!
A great book with a great ending!.......1998-11-04
This series is great and it has (imho) a wonderful ending. I have cried every time I have read this book (quite often) and it never ceases to get to me. I highly recommend it!
Book Description
In the last millennium there have been only six female sovereigns: Mary I and Elizabeth I, Mary II and Anne, Victoria and Elizabeth II, who celebrated her eightieth birthday in 2006. With the exception of Mary I, they are among England's most successful monarchs. Without Mary II and Anne, the Glorious Revolution of 1688 might not have taken place. Elizabeth I and Victoria gave their name to an age, presiding over long periods when the country made significant progress in the growth of empire, prestige and power. All of them have far-reaching legacies. Each faced personal sacrifices and emotional dilemmas in her pursuit of political power. How to overcome the problem of being a female ruler when the sex was considered inferior? Does a queen take a husband and, if so, how does she reconcile the reversal of the natural order, according to which the man should be the master? A queen’s first duty is to provide an heir to the throne, but at what cost? In this richly compelling narrative, Maureen Waller delves into the intimate lives of England’s queens regnant in delicious detail, assessing their achievements from a female perspective.

SOVEREIGN LADIES.......2007-10-04
AN EXCELLENT BOOK THAT IS INFORMATIVE AND EXTREMELY INTERESTING. ALTHOUGH I AM FAMILIAR WITH EACH SOVEREIGN I LEARNED MUCH MORE THAN I EXPECTED TO. THE INSIGHT INTO THE TIMES MADE EACH SEGMENT RELEVANT. A VERY WORTHWHILE READ.
Book Description
Valeri presents an overview of Hawaiian religious culture, in which hierarchies of social beings and their actions are mirrored by the cosmological hierarchy of the gods. As the sacrifice is performed, the worshipper is incorporated into the god of his class. Thus he draws on divine power to sustain the social order of which his action is a part, and in which his own place is determined by the degree of his resemblance to his god. The key to Hawaiian society—and a central focus for Valeri—is the complex and encompassing sacrificial ritual that is the responsibility of the king, for it displays in concrete actions all the concepts of pre-Western Hawaiian society. By interpreting and understanding this ritual cycle, Valeri contends, we can interpret all of Hawaiian religious culture.
Customer Reviews:
Those were the days my friend..........2000-11-18
Valeri's Kingship and Sacrifice is a well researched and thoroughly documented study of the ritual practices and beliefs of the state religion of Hawai'i prior to Christianization and subsequent colonization (you make the connection). This classic is an essential for those interested in the indigenous religious practices of Kanaka Maoli (the Native Hawaiian), specifically those of the ruling class or ali'i and consequently the participation required by the maka'ainana (watcher of the land). He relies extensively on oral histories recorded and/or translated by Native speakers, as well as other documents authored by Native Hawaiians primarily in the 1800's. These written sources are unique because Kanaka Maoli are rare among indigenious peoples as they were able to record their history in their mother tongue and English. In fact prior to the American backed coup that toppled the legitimate government of Hawaii in 1893, Native Hawaiians were the most literate nation in the world. Today Kanaka Maoli Nation is considered the most illiterate ethnic group in the American colony known as the State of Hawai'i. Politics aside, to Valeri's credit he consistantly avoids judgement of what might appear to be questionable cultural practices/values to some Western eyes (although let that reader first take the log out his own). On a metaphysical plane, Kingship and Sacrifice is a study of an alternative and (in its a time) viable reality. We are reminded that reality is not arbitrary construct or an absolute, but rather a mutable creation of the human mind and as such any reality functions because as an individuals within a society we give our conscious or unconscious consent. We are also given opportunity to reflect upon how Spirit was made manifest or channeled within a particuliar society, and noteworthy is the belief that mystery of Spirit imbued every aspect of life. The influence of this ancient way of being is still felt within contemporary Hawaiian culture.
Book Description
In this concentrated and detailed look at questions surrounding the act of sacrifice, Dennis King Keenan discusses both the role and the meaning of sacrifice in our lives. Building on recent philosophical discussions on the gift and transcendence, Keenan covers new ground with this exploration of the religious, psychological, and ethical issues that sacrifice entails. According to Keenan, sacrifice is paradoxically called upon to sacrifice itself. But what does this necessary, yet impossible condition mean for living an ethical life? Along the way to an answer, Keenan considers the views of Hegel, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Bataille, Lacan, Levinas, Blanchot, Irigaray, Derrida, Kristeva, Nancy, and iek. This thoughful and provocative work affords a sophisticated philosophical treatment of the question of sacrifice.
Customer Reviews:
Beyond Economy.......2007-03-06
This is a great book. It presents in an exhaustive way the question of sacrifice as it develops in 20th century French thought. The chapters on Bataille and Derrida are especially illuminating. Keenan shows how sacrifice fits into an economical (means-ends) relation and how French thinkers try to reconceive sacrifice (or death) so that it exceeds any sort of use of it that will lead to a payoff. You'll learn a lot if you read this book.

Strong Theology and Biblical Leadership Development.......2005-02-24
This practical book describes one of the best ways to provide a system of nurture, discipleship and care for church members in the shortest amount of time, and with the greatest number of resources. As described by George, "Shepherds" care individually for the flock, and those type of leaders are spread too thin and burn out quickly. Instead, George suggests becoming "Ranchers" who delegate and oversee teams of shepherds who care for the flock in all areas of church life and faith.
George takes a very biblical approach (as modeled by Moses and his father-in-law Jethro), resulting in ongoing leadership development that multiplies itself. Current leaders are taught to train, mentor, and coach others to do ministry -- to give ministry away, like Jesus did. George applies his strategies toward breaking membership growth barriers at the 200, 400, 800 levels and beyond -- not for numbers' sake, but as a way of striving toward healthy kingdom advancement!
Brief Excerpt: "The question for a rancher to ask himself or herself is, `Am I doing the ministry myself, or am I committing others to do it?' I would go so far as to propose that you should not be doing ministry unless you are modeling or training someone else how to do it. Otherwise, you are merely producing care; you are not increasing your production capabilities. Modeling is legitimate ministry as long as it is witnessed by someone who is going to take responsibility for doing it next. That principle applies to virtually every activity, from fixing the church photocopier to praying for the flock." (p. 105)
The price of this book is well worth the investment. Purchase a used copy if nothing else. Also, be sure to check out George's books called *Prepare Your Church For the Future* and *The Coming Church Revolution*. If you're leading or wanting to build a small group ministry, then you will also want to buy copies of *Nine Keys to Effective Small Group Leadership* for all your leaders!
Is This Church Growth the Jesus Way?.......2003-08-03
What has happened to repent and believe? This is Jesus' way of saving! His Words of grace and forgiveness in the gospel purely preached and the right administration of the Sacraments of baptism and communion --- these are how Jesus says the church grows!
George wants to alter this to what the people want. They certainly don't want this means of grace stuff going on. No, they would rather have the "helpful, practical prescriptions, both spiritual and numerical" that George offers here.
Bogged down at a number of attendees? 100? 200? 400? 800? George has slick answers from marketing and sociology and church growth experts, but not much from God's Word that I can find. Oh, there are Biblical quotes, but check them out carefully, noticing context and other places the Bible speaks on this and you'll find like me that there are very suspect as being anywhere near what God wants to say. For example, does God want the church to be run like the discovery and manufacture of aspirin? (page 58-59)
This is more of Church Growth desire to have the church be relevant and successful in a culture which it seems more and more deplores the truth (see 2 Timothy 4:3ff) which is not at all that bad of desire. But to let the desired results drives the means without God's saying so is unbiblical, unchristian, and dangerous.
Growing through the barriers.......2000-04-14
This is a must-read for church leaders who want to grow their church through the barriers of size and expectations of the congregation. Each increment poses its own problems for growth, but George helps us understand the expectations of the congregation and gives suggestions on how to help the church grow rather than stay the same. He also gives examples of leadership styles that will enable the pastoral leader to know what works best in different situations. Read it and decide if you want your church to grow!
