Omnibus collection of some hard to find stories, but..........2005-04-06
This is an omnibus editon of George MacDonald's three Vicar Walton stories, the second and third of which are fairly difficult to find. Excellent reads, very enjoyable. The only drawback is this particular edition is edited into modern English, so the original flavor of MacDonald's writing is lost. While that has its advantages, especially in readability, still this aren't the books that MacDonald wrote and that C. S. Lewis named as some of his favorites. If you are a casual reader that just wants some of the finest English fiction from the late Victorian period, I highly recommend this edition. If you're a fan of MacDonald, though, you might want to keep looking for the unaltered originals.
Surprisingly Good.......2003-08-16
When a friend recommended this book to me, I thought she was out of her mind. The stories were written in the 1800s and the writer was from Scotland, of all places. I decided to read it anyway, and was greatly surprised! It takes a little while to get into it, and if you can overlook the fact that it's not a modern setting, it actually gets pretty good. This book is actually three books in one. It starts with the story of an unmarried vicar in a small Scottish town, and ends years later with his daughter's story. There are some very interesting characters in this book. The vicar is very human and very loving (and non-judgmental). I would recommend this book to middle/high schoolers. It would make a great summer reading or even a homeschool supplement.
Great book!.......2001-01-05
One of the more challenging books I've read but well worth the effort. MacDonald weaves a wonderful story about a vicar and his family. Hamilton did a great thing when he edited this trilogy for generations to come. Take up the challenge and end up with a jewel of a book!
Wonderful Reading.......2000-05-12
A lovely collection of stories. A delight in today's sea of romances. Very thought provoking. Recommended for adult and young adult alike.

This book is part of the "Faith at the Crossroads" series and as such is not supposed to reveal all the secrets or tie up all the loose ends, except where the hero and heroine of this particular book are concerned. I think the author did a good job considering the rules she had to follow.

Boss,
My reporter's nose smells a story brewing at the Double V Ranch. Word is that rancher Michael Vance has already lost several cows to a mystery ailment. This isn't the first odd thing to happen there, either -- Michael's old foreman disappeared out of the blue, and his new one, Hector Delgato, is cagey. He bears watching. Meanwhile, Michael hired newcomer Layla Dixon as the housekeeper/vet while his injured housekeeper recovers, and the bohemian beauty is nothing like meat-and-potatoes Michael. I think romance might be in the air, but there is also something sinister starting up in Colorado Springs....
More about this book...
CAST OF CHARACTERS
Michael Vance -- His cows kept getting sick and dying. Were they succumbing to disease or was someone poisoning them?
Layla Dixon -- Working as the temporary ranch veterinarian and helping uncover the secrets behind the ailments of the cows kept the bohemian beauty close to Michael.
El Jefe -- Who was the man also known as Chief? What did he have to do with the new influx of drugs into Colorado Springs? And why was he so intent on bringing down the Vance and Montgomery families?
Hector Delgato -- Michael's secretive new foreman was never around whenever bad things happened....
* * *
***I am not sure about this book. I felt the beginning to be rather confusing at times and I felt that the ending was rushed with really no conclusion. I was left hanging and was disappointed that I spent the time that I did reading this book. Love Inspired books are usually my favorite reads but this one didn't even rate average for me. The only positive was I liked the two main characters -- quirks and all.

A Country House Murder Mystery in A POW Camp.......2000-08-30
Master mystery writer Gilbert takes the classic English weekend country house murder and resituates it in an Allied POW camp in Italy just before the Allied invasion of Italy (which is ably described by Alan Moorehead in Eclipse). Gilbert spent time in a prison camp, and thus writes with authority about the setting. The book is similar to The Great Escape in that the prisoners are mainly English officers engaged in tunneling out of the camp--although here the camp is run by Italians. The camp's one Greek POW is found dead in one of the tunnels and one of the officers is appointed detective to figure who killed him, how, and why, and what it means. Thusly, Gilbert presents a traditional whodunit, with the impending German assumption of control of the camp as a looming threat. Like your average Agatha Christie, it's entertaining and relatively clever.

A fast-paced thriller that tracks the life and death of Global Cargo Express Flight 3217. Author and veteran pilot Mark Danielson takes the reader inside the gritty world of aviation and gives it the way it really is.

More! Write More!.......2007-06-11
Once again, from beginning to end ~ a GREAT fast paced read! Danielson has a gift of writing from his obvious background in aviation, without making you feel inferior. My only airline background is having a preference of an aisle seat on an exit row when making a reservation. However, his ability to make technical information easily understood without getting in the way of the story line for the average reader is only surpassed by his ability to equally intrigue those familiar with the industry (my pilot uncle). A great gift for Father's Day, but don't let that fool you ~ moms will love it too! This thriller rings true for anyone who has ever struggled with balancing work and family, as well was righting a wrong amidst corporate and government apathy. It also makes you think twice before getting so upset with the screening processes at airports. I am ready for the NEXT BOOK already!!!!
Danger Within.......2003-08-27
Solid, credible writing matched with a fast-paced and suspenseful plot. Danger Within reels the reader in with an insider's view of the commercial airline industry. Mr. Danielson's experience and knowledge of the industry provide the framework for a great piece of writing...easily understandable to the reader with no aviation background. Especially relevant after 9/11, Danger Within lays bare the increasing threat of airline terrorism on a global basis. Thrilling read!
A fast paced & Exciting read!.......2003-03-28
Danielson's well written book, is laced with the "realism" of what obviously stems from the author's "real life" background as a professional aviator, as well as "insider" knowledge, unique to issues of airline safety and the commercial air cargo business. Highly recommended!

Corporate fraud and the importance of the Internal Audit function for executive management.......2005-08-22
This is a very digestible volume written in straightforward, jargon free language that could be read in a single sitting. The author looks at a number of recent cases, many of which the books target audience will be familiar with. He identifies the main root causes of frauds and identifies the areas management should look at to prevent it.
As one would expect given the authors background, he was formally Head of Group Internal Audit at Irelands largest banking group Allied Irish Bank, the books main focus is on the implementation and organisation of an effective internal audit function from the point of view of executive management.
With a view to the brevity and readability of this volume, it must be recommended to anyone in a position of responsibility in an organisation where fraud could raise its dangerous head.
PLEASE CHANGE THE TITLE TO.....................2002-11-27
I tried to do a review on this book during my masters course at University. The title and sound theme of this is book as intresting and attractive as a hot best seller but after half the book, which reviews interesting case studies on real company frauds, the author tries to MARKET (sell) the International Auditing and Internal Auditors, which he himself is, to the reader (mostly targeted at the CORPORATE). He only emphises on the importance of internal audit and how it is helpful it is for a company to protect it from fraud, and how the compay should give the auditors more authority and how the auditors should be given complete clear information about facts of the company and that kind of information. The author has saftly safegaurded his line bu adding 'the dangers from within to the title'. I recon the book should be more appropriatly called 'Internal Audit'- save yourself while you can.
But I had question for the Author........ How are any one going to proctect himself and what measures should central/government authority use if a company itself is a fraud and its auditor are a part of it, (For example; Enron and Author Anderson). When the Compay itself is a fraud and its internal and external auditors (which the author sugests are the maost important protection a company or central authority has against fraud, are like Auther Anderson, Protecting its client and using loop holesin the system.

A Sowing of Seeds.......2007-07-10
The Retrieval Artist and Other Stories (2002) is a collection of nine SF stories. These stories have sometimes led to sequels -- and even novels -- in the same milieus. Others in this collection also may produce such sequels.
"The Retrieval Artist" (2000) was first published in Analog in the June 2000 issue. This novella was nominated for the Hugo award and is the precursor of the Retrieval Artist series. In this story, Miles Flint is older than in the series, having been in the business for a long time. His reputation has brought Anetka Sobol asking for him to find her mother.
"Dancers Like Children" (1991) was first published in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in the September 1991 issue. This story and its sequel led to the novel Alien Influences. In this story, Justin Schafer, Ph.D., made a mistake fifteen years ago. Now he is called on to repeat the process that had led to that erroneous judgment.
"Alien Influences" (1992) was first published in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in the June 1992 issue. John was one of the Dancer children in the previous story. He is still bearing the social stigmata of that experience. Now he is a bounty hunter and Anita Miles hires him to find a stolen Bodean wind sculpture.
"Flowers and the Last Hurrah" (1999) was first published in Analog in the March 1999 issue. Colin is the publisher of Gossip Hourly. The video coverage on the program always uses short-lived clones -- flowers -- as stand-ins for public figures. Now one of their flowers has been murdered in Trump's Last Hurrah.
"The One That Got Away" (1998) was first published in The UFO Files, edited by Martin H. Greenberg and Ed Gorman, in February 1998. It was blackjack tournament night at the Spirit Winds Casino. All the regulars were there as well as an outsider woman who was very good. All except the regulars and the outsider had been eliminated when suddenly the lights went out and miniature flying saucers appeared.
"Results" (2000) was first published in Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine in the March 2000 issue. Jess lives in New York City and loves it. She is thinking of marrying Bryan. They have even had their DNA tested to determine the type of children they might have. Bryan is waiting to tell her the results.
"Reflections of Life and Death" (1998) was first published in Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine in the January 1998 issue. Sarah's mother is dying of old age. She wants to move in with Sarah, but Sarah doesn't think that would work. Yet her mother refuses to go to the Extended Care Facility.
"Present" (2002) has not been published prior to this collection. Mason Evers is thirty years old and his wife has a present for him. He is not in the mood. Then something starts to rerun his life over and over again.
"Without End" (1994) was first published in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in the April 1994 issue. Dylan is a philosopher and his wife Geneva is a theoretical physicist. She is onto something very new and very big involving nonlinear time. Then she dies.
This author creates interesting characters and situations. Each story tells something about the human condition, even in some very strange circumstances. Several of these stories include alien creatures with alien worldviews. Others show possibilities within our own society. In each case, humans must learn to cope within their environments.
Highly recommended for Rusch fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of strange situations, unusual societies, and human acclimations.

Welcome selection of SF stories from underappreciated author.......2004-06-05
The Retrieval Artist and other stories is a wonderful collection of shorts that originally appeared in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction - all by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, editor. The title story is apparently a forerunner to a later series of novels involving the gumshoe-styled hero, Miles Flint. If this was an accurate predictor of the style and quality of writing to come later, then I can see why Flint has so many fans.
As much as I loved that retro take on a very futuristic tale, however, it was not the strongest one in my opinion. Dancers like Children and its sequel, Alien Influences struck a stronger chord with me because of Rusch's valiant attempt to create and explain a radically different alien psychology. Many other novelists have tried to do that and only ended up anthropomorphizing them in the end. These two stories contain some of the more original ideas in SF today.
The rest of the selections are worthy, although one or two seem more like filler material. In my opinion the cover price was a little steep for this collection, and it didn't need to be published in trade paperback form. On the whole though I think The Retrieval Artist passed my litmus test: now I want more. And thanks to Rusch's later works, I will have it.

I haven't completed this study yet, but everything I have seen in it seems to be Bible-based. It was recommended to me by a man whom I trust and I look forward to getting in-depth into the study. It covers a range of topics that people deal with, and applies the Bible to those contexts and directs the reader to look up passages, rather than only giving human wisdom.
a powerful, practical, biblical study.......2005-10-18
This has been a great resource for our men's groups. I found it convicting, challenging, motivating. Many vital topics are addressed and the questions cut to the heart. Taken seriously, this study changes lives.
