Book Description

There are two oceans, mom used to tell me. There is one that is blue—a clean, bright Disney World blue, which simply is the mirror of a clear sky above. But look at the ocean on a cloudy day, she would say, and here lies the green ocean—the true ocean, full of algae and kelp and slimy creatures, evil lurking in the shadows.

The One True Ocean is a searing "what happened?" novel driven by suspense and tension when a twenty-something artist returns to her abandoned childhood home and begins to dig into her past. In a search for answers to her aunt's suicide and her father's identity, Jenna discovers that her seaside house holds dark secrets that will unravel her family history and shatter the truth she has come to believe.

In this eloquent debut novel, Sarah Beth Martin mixes dark psychology and real emotion with breathless storytelling to explore the deep connections between past and present, love and loss, the dead and the living.

4 out of 5 stars a good suspensful read.......2006-05-30

This author keeps the reader hooked. I found the storyline a bit depressing, but it all comes together for unexpected threads. You really can't anticipate what will come next from this story.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.......2005-08-31

This is definitely one of the best can't-put-it-down books I've read in a long while. The characters were complex, and the way the author interweaves the locations, nature, her art, and her past is truly compelling. Some passages are a little ponderous, but since it's her first book, we'll give her a pass on that. I'm not in a book club, but if I were, this would be an excellent choice - it leaves you with lots to talk/think about and keeps you guessing until the end!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written, Highly Evocative.......2004-04-05

The lyrical language in this first novel from Sarah Beth Martin was a pleasant surprise, not because I expected the book to be poorly written, but because I don't believe that first novels are usually this evocative of time and place. Most of the action takes place in a quiet seacoast town in Maine, moving back and forth between the 1980s, when the novel's two principle characters -- a mother and daughter -- were young, and the present day, when the daughter is a widow in her twenties. Mother and daughter have never communicated with one another very well and Martin gradually allows the reader to discover why by letting each of the women tell her side of the story, switching between narratives and points of view.

While the daughter does end up learning the identity of her biological father, that is not her true quest in this novel. Rather, she is searching for the *meaning* of what took place in her childhood, not merely trying to uncover the facts. I always enjoy stories where the author gives me tidbits of a story and I have to use my wit and intuition to figure out what really happened, pulling information from the narratives of the main characters to find objective reality beneath the characters' subjective experiences. This is one of those books, and I quite enjoyed unraveling the mystery as I savored Martin's beautiful prose. I highly recommend this book for readers who appreciate a good story, well told.

5 out of 5 stars A good read that keeps you turning pages............2003-10-18

I particularly enjoyed the artful, descriptive narrative. Thoughts, emotions and relationships were fully captured and understood without being unecessarily wordy. I find it difficult to find a book that can convey emotions well. This book hits the mark. Very interesting ending that ties up the questions raised throughout the book. Looking forward to more!

5 out of 5 stars A nostalgic beautiful novel.......2003-10-07

I LOVED this book. Sarah Beth Martin really gets inside the narrator's mind to create a story that is tragic and rings very true. In reading this book, I revisited the ghosts of my past...very thought provoking. An amazing debut! I can't wait to read more...

As a young boy, Keith Jessop dreamed of leaving the Yorkshire, England, mill town of Keighley behind to sail the seas in search of treasure. Four decades later, he found his chest of gold: 431 gold bars, to be exact, from the HMS Edinburgh, 800 feet down in the Arctic Sea. Jessop tells his rags-to-riches story in Goldfinder.

From his first snorkel dives as a Royal Marine commando and his first scuba dive--when he could very easily have died--Jessop was hooked. He began collecting equipment and spending every nonworking moment either in the water or heading to and from it. He quit his job--much to the consternation of his long-suffering wife, Mildred--and began working as a salvage diver going after nonferrous metal fittings from shipwrecks. Working his first wreck, the SS. Pollux II, "brought back memories of my childhood fantasies to me, but this was the real thing, almost as good as diving on a galleon full of pieces of eight." Later, he and his partners recovered over 200 tons of copper from the Johanna Thorden, earning themselves the nickname "The Copper Kings" in the process. Between wrecks Jessop turned to saturation diving (where divers stay in a pressurized environment for days on end) on offshore oil platforms.

Time not spent in the water was spent doing research, using both alcohol ("the research often involved nothing more than buying the local lobstermen a pint. They'd point out sites where they'd lost lobster pots, a good indicator of something unusual on the sea-bed") and archives. His research revealed plenty of surprises--such as the day he was left alone in a room with what turned out to be the cargo manifest of the Lusitania. Despite the claims of the British government, the document indicated that the Lusitania was indeed carrying a large cargo of armaments. "I was unsure if I was being leaked a story the official wished to see published or being tested on my ability to keep a secret.... I've kept my silence until now."

Having gained decades of experience, Jessop assembled the team to go after the Edinburgh, which was sunk in 1942 while carrying 10 tons of Soviet gold. Miles of red tape later, on September 16, 1981, his dreams came true. "I cradled the bar in my hands, holding it as tenderly as a baby--a very heavy one." Recovering the gold was just the beginning, however, and Jessop recounts his later troubles in (sometimes tedious) detail. Co-written by Neil Hanson (whose book The Custom of the Sea was a 2000 Amazon.com Editor's Choice), Goldfinder makes great reading for divers and dreamers alike. --Sunny Delaney

4 out of 5 stars Reality of Salvage Work.......2005-12-12

A good read, I was glued to the page turner till 1am last night. This book displays the real world of salvage work, the burocracy you have to work against, the pitfalls, the ways wrecks are found, the research needed and where to find it.
As for the main story of the Edinburg, it is a classic example of a man too focused to worry about the non-research details. His lack of tax planning, failure to background check his partners, and his gruff demeanor set the story up for a sad ending.
Its a real world study of the salvage industry and a great read, but its real life. Don't expect a Dirk Pitt ending with him getting the girl, the gold and the respect of his peers.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and captivating all the way through.......2003-12-05

I'm always fascinated with stories of shipwrecks and lost treasure and this book definitely quenches my thirst for both. An amazing story of Keith Jessop's plight in recovering ten tons of Russion gold that went down in the belly of the HMS Edinburg during WWII in the cold Arctic Sea. I especially liked the early part of the book where Keith spends some time giving you the background on how he got started in underwater salvage. I especially enjoyed his insight into some of the legal issues involved in running a salvage operation. Keith takes you through every step of his long journey in planning for and putting together a team of experts to execute and oversee the actual recovery of the gold. The book is full of suspense, as you don't know what will happen next, which inevitably keeps you glued to each turning page. At some times Keith goes into a lot of detail, but this was necessary for the reader to get an appreciation for the levels of frustration he most likely experienced while dealing with the bureaucracy. He also pays tribute to the lost sailors aboard the HMS Edinburg through his heartfelt synopsis of the events that led up to its tragic demise and how his team of professionals handled their uncovered remains. If you like stories of sunken treasure, no matter how big or small, this book has got you covered. You won't be dissapointed. Keith's way of depicting the events was so clear and vivid that at times I swear I could smell salt in the air.

an amazing book, Keith Jessops passion of diving and particuliarly wreck salvage, leave indelible memories.
the books balance is great, enough early details to establish his character, the book really picks up pace with the various wreck salvages leading up to the edinburgh, the background and research is well documented, as are the details of setting up expeditions for locating and then salvaging the wrecks.

Clive Cussler was right, this was a great Marine Archology book.
It was intresting, how the diver started his carere.I found the History of the Edinburgh very intresteding. One of the best marine Archology books I ever read.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible story of perseverance and daring!.......2001-09-21

Keith Jessop's achievement in successfully salvaging the treasure of the HMS Edinburgh parallels that of Tommy Thompson, who found and salvaged the gold from the 1857 wreck of the SS Central America. Jessop's book GOLDFINDER compares favorably to Gary Kinder's book SHIP OF GOLD; both books tell the full story of how the vessels (Edinburgh and Central America, respectively) came to grief, and both excel in their descriptions of the background and personal details of the men who would ultimately bring their treasures to the surface.

Jessop's accomplishment is particularly remarkable in that his expedition did not utilize ROVs, but instead relied upon surface-supplied divers who descended more than 800 feet to the bottom of the frigid Barents Sea to penetrate the armored bomb room of the sunken Edinburgh, retrieving her cargo of gold bars while enduring the danger and privations of saturation diving.

Fast-moving and charmingly told, the author brings his unique sense of humor and adventurous spirit to life on every page, resulting in a book that is engaging and fascinating. If you enjoy a grand adventure, and especially if you find interest in tales of shipwreck, diving and marine salvage, don't miss GOLDFINDER!

Book Review by Linda Lewis

The content of the book starts with background history of Jennifer Carter, the first woman to dive on Titanic. She talks about what it was like growing up in her family, as young girl who had so many dreams. Then Jennifer relates to the experience of surviving an abusive marriage. There are exciting action packed adventures under the mentorship of Ralph White, skydiving, scuba diving, and para sailing. Then there's the search for the Loch Ness monster with Ralph White and Emory Kristof of National Geographic. You will read about her work with Steven Low in the making of the Imax Film, "Titanica", featuring Ralph White, Steve Blasco, Emory Kristof, and Anatoly Sagalevitch (chief scientist for the Russian Academy of Science) of the "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh". Most of us like domestic animals, like cats and dogs, not Jennifer...she stares into the eyes of whales and sharks and reaches out and touches them!

Jennifer has won an "Emmy" for her work on the National Geographic special, "The Great Whale". She has swum with sharks in Steven Spielberg's, "Jaws". She has also dove with renowned shark handlers in "The Sharks", on PBS, and goes on to tell about her harrowing experience on the "Majestic Explorer" cruise ship, that hit a large rock and started to sink.

As a Titanic fanatic, she is faced with a similar dilemma of which the object was survival. Jennifer was the expedition leader for the French/American expedition in 1987, in which she tells about the eight weeks of turmoil and tension between the French and the Americans aboard the ship and the thief in their midst. She then goes on to share her experience of her dive to two and a half miles below the Atlantic to where the crumpled wreck of Titanic lays motionless, her dream finally fulfilled. Jennifer has faced all of her obstacles head on that have lain before her. As a woman, she has had to fight and work even harder to prove that she is a very strong, courageous and competent woman, able to accomplish any job or dream.

Once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down! I wanted to see what adventure was next as I felt so many emotions of anger, sadness, laughter and excitement. Jennifer Carter is a definite inspiration to all those with dreams, that might seem unreachable. She proves that anything is possible, with hard work and determination.

The co-author, Joel Hirschhorn, is her husband and confidant, who has won two academy awards for writing the love songs for disaster films, "The Morning After" from the "Poseidon Adventure" and "We May Never Love Like This Again" from the "Towering Inferno". His songs have sold over 94 million records including 14 gold records. He has authored four best sellers and was "Tony-nominated" for his work on the score in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Very exciting reading!

5 out of 5 stars A Great story of adventure and triumph.......1999-10-11

I have had the distinct pleasure of corresponding with Jennifer through e-mail and I must say that she is one neat lady. As you will see from her book, she has lived a tough life, but a very exciting one. She contributed a story to my Titanic website and I am thankful for that. I highly recommend this book. It is a fascinating read and a must for any Titanic enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!!!.......1999-08-04

Two of my favorite recent books are "Into Thin Air" and "The Perfect Storm." "Titanic Adventure" is a thrilling addition and adds up to a great trilogy. I'm a strong admirer of William F. Buckley, Jr. and when I saw his enthusiastic endorsement of "Titanic Adventure," I had to pick it up and see why he was so excited. Before the first chapter was halfway over, I knew. This is not just another Titanic story -- not at all. It's an amazing, suspense-packed, unforgettable drama of a courageous woman who fought all obstacles to become the first woman to dive to the Titanic.

What I liked most about the main character was her humanity. She's no cardboard superwoman, but a person with fears and doubts who pushed ahead and overcame them to fulfill her dreams. She faced a shipwreck, two hurricanes, a killer fog and a Captain Queeg-like enemy on board ship and she refused to knuckle under and let herself be destroyed. I only hope this becomes a movie, so the whole world can read about -- and be inspired by -- a story both unusual and powerfully moving.

2 out of 5 stars Battered Housewife Changes Mates, Takes a Dive.......1999-07-29

I can never get enough of that Titanic stuff. But in these battered housewives stories, you always wonder why it takes so long for the woman to realize she is marrying a creep, or has married one. And though I saw it coming, I was still surprized at her loot the Titanic attitude.

5 out of 5 stars A true account of high drama, written with flair.......1999-06-27

School Library Journal - July 1999 by Cynthia J. Rieben

A well-paced autobiography of a remarkable gutsy woman whose life-long love of adventure and the sea seemed destined to lead her to the wreck of the Titanic. Carter begins by describing her youthful obsession with the ocean and classic stories of nautical adventure. She recounts events in her youth, her first marriage and her devotion to her children as she took on the burden of single motherhood. While maintaining a tedious day job, Carter managed to pursue skydiving, parasailing, ballooning, river rafting, hang gliding and skiing. On one fateful trip to Scotland working as a diver for a National Geographic shoot, the author met Bob Ballard, who was eventually the first man to see the wreckage of the Titanic on the ocean floor. She explains how her varied experiences over the course of many years as a diver, project director and diving coordinator would one day land her the job of a lifetime: leader of a French-American expedition to film a documentary on the salvaging of the ship's artifacts. Much more than just another story of the Titanic, this is a true account of high drama, written with flair.

CHAPTER ONE

THE BOOK OF NUMBERS

Brielle, New Jersey, September 1991

Bill Nagle's life changed the day a fisherman sat beside him in a ramshackle bar and told him about a mystery he had found lying at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Against his better judgment, that fisherman promised to tell Nagle how to find it. The men agreed to meet the next day on the rickety wooden pier that led to Nagle's boat, the Seeker, a vessel Nagle had built to chase possibility. But when the appointed time came, the fisherman was not there. Nagle paced back and forth, careful not to plunge through the pier where its wooden planks had rotted away. He had lived much of his life on the Atlantic, and he knew when worlds were about to shift. Usually, that happened before a storm or when a man's boat broke. Today, however, he knew it was going to happen when the fisherman handed him a scrap of paper, a hand-scrawled set of numbers that would lead to the sunken mystery. Nagle looked into the distance for the fisherman. He saw no one. The salt air blew against the small seashore town of Brielle, tilting the dockside boats and spraying the Atlantic into Nagle's eyes. When the mist died down he looked again. This time, he saw the fisherman approaching, a small square of paper crumpled in his hands. The fisherman looked worried. Like Nagle, he had lived on the ocean, and he also knew when a man's life was about to change.

In the whispers of approaching autumn, Brielle's rouge is blown away and what remains is the real Brielle, the locals' Brielle. This small seashore town on the central New Jersey coast is the place where the boat captains and fishermen live, where convenience store owners stay open to serve neighbors, where fifth graders can repair scallop dredges. This is where the hangers-on and wannabes and also-rans and once-greats keep believing in the sea. In Brielle, when the customers leave, the town's lines show, and they are the kind grooved by the thin dif

Others have gone into detail about this book, and it is true. This book combines a mystery worthy of a Sherlock Holmes novel with the details of technical diving and written in such a gripping manner that it could be a work of pop fiction (not in a negative way, just that it flows so well and put together so well that it could have been made up, if that makes sense.)

And the author does a great job of not leaving you "hanging" with an abrupt ending.

Highly recommended and has set the bar for other books in this genre.

Tantallizing and heart pounding tale based on incredibly researched information about u boats and diving with an accurate, simple description of practical diving, diving medicine and physiology.

5 out of 5 stars Compulsion to know the answer........2007-09-13

A fascinating saga about 2 deep sea divers and their 6 year odyssey to uncover the identity of a sunken German U boat. A captivating story, and you'll learn a lot about deep sea diving.

4 out of 5 stars Deep Thrills.......2007-09-05

An absorbing account of the discovery and identification by veteran divers John Chatterton and Richie Kohler of a sunken Nazi U-boat 100 miles off the coast of New Jersey. Kurson skillfully weaves together several threads into a very readable narrative, including the evolution of Chatterton and Kohler's rivalry-turned-friendship, the technical hazards of exploring a mangled wreck in 230 feet of water, and the duo's maddening, seven-year long ordeal to obtain positive evidence -- both on the wreck and in official but flawed US and German naval records -- of the boat's identity. As the tale draws to a close, Kurson also draws a moving portrait of the U-boat's crew, who went to sea in the final days of the war and knew that they likely would not return alive.

I started diving when the final pieces of this mystery were falling into place, and can remember following the story of New Jersey's mystery U-boat in the papers. However, none of those articles was anywhere as involving as Kurson's account, which I devoured in four days. Sure, there's some overheated prose here and there ("in a shipwreck, where every danger is first cousin to every other, a diver's desparation makes an open house of his bad situation."), but that's a minor strike against this otherwise excellent and comprehensive work.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Intimate Journey To The Shadows.......2007-08-28

Sometimes the flaws make a thing so much more than perfection could ever achieve. The imperfections in this literary account of the exploration of a WWII submarine discovered in 1991 off the Coast of New Jersey are well documented. Those imperfections didn't bother me.

I was facinated by the detailed account of the personalities of the divers in "Shadow." Its easy to identify a future SCUBA diver - someone who is comfortable putting their face under water. Even better, because it will sometimes trump the 'face' test, is whether a person's curiosity is so intense that they are able to project their consciousness entirely onto something outside of themselves to the virtual exclusion of other thoughts. Divers want to investigate, explore, see something extraordinary, find out whats under that rock, go someplace very few people have been, find something unique, etc. The experience is so strong, you may forget to be worried about all the risks.

My enjoyment of "Shadow" was absolutely enhanced by my experience as a diver who is both Nitrox and advanced open water certified. I have never gone deeper than 110 ft - The U-boat 85, off of Nags Head, North Carolina, which is 20ft shallower than the recreational diving limit of 130 ft. So far, I've never wanted to see anything deeper, but I suspect I'll pass. Surface light begins to diminish rapidly. It usually gets alot colder.

At the depths routinely visitied by the divers in this book, 230 ft., nitrogen narcosis is an inevitability, and helium mixes carry their own risks. Water pressure increases to seven times what it is at the surface. Just when you need all your mental faculties and judgement, you can be assured they will be impared to an extent that cannot be anticipated from dive to dive. Even more frightening is that getting to the surface to resolve any problems that may arise (my mask came off once at 80 ft), must now include a life-saving decompression stop. When you head for the surface with less than 30 minutes of air for your stop, you're in trouble.

Diving can put you face to face with three realities that I don't sense as readily on land: 1.) the incredible spiritual beauty of the natural world, 2.) how alone we really are (I've never felt more alone than those very few times I've dived without a buddy), 3.) Death is always hiding within convenient reach.

The insatiable curiosity of the two lead characters, Chatterton and Kohler, also drives them above the water, as they travel to Europe to learn as much as they can about the submarine and its crew. There was no 'gold' involved, just an incredible mystery to solve.

"Shadow" was one of those books I read in one sitting (I missed dinner). I would compare it to Krakauer's works in power and drama, if not as well written. But again, in a way the rough nature of the text enhanced the story, as if I was sitting across the table from the author.

NOTE TO FELLOW DIVERS: After reading this book I have found my goal for my diving trips next summer - get my "Rescue Diver" certification.

NOTE TO THOSE PEOPLE trying to get young men (ages 9-15) into reading - I know of two young men who hated to read until they picked up this book. Not that they love reading now, but the 'no trespassing' sign is now down in front of the library.

This is the first Isabel Sharpe book that I have read. I am completely hooked. This book is VERY well written. I is a combination of great writing and wonderful fun. You can really get into the characters of this book.

At first it was rather confusing as to who was who but once you get this down, the book flows. I know that you will like this book! The characters and situations are believable. Now, after doing research on this author, I have purchased MORE of her books. I just can't wait to have a Isabel Sharpe read-a-thon!:^)

I can't even begin to put into words what this book made me feel. Isabel has taken a fantasy and run with it to place I didn't think Harlequin was brave enough to go. What an amazing insight into the way sexual fantasies are acted out. This book is real, delving into the characters psyche, even while being a fantasy of the best sort.

5 out of 5 stars What is your Media?.......2006-02-01

Fantasy's "breaking away" from the primary sensory world offers a journey into the unknown to experience the REAL, according to Rolland Hein. We all have a Mythos (worldview); this cherished text sharpens the Christian sensibility by using the secondary worlds to help us understand spiritual concepts. Out-of-print version has been updated, a superior gift to anyone interested in Christianity, Fantasy, Narnia, Middle Earth, Imagination, or any of the Oxford Christian Writer or their successors.

5 out of 5 stars Entering into the Myth that became Fact.......2003-09-11

This is one of the best introductions to popular Christian fiction that seeks to draw the reader into the world of meaning. too often modern literature, following earlier reductionist authors, strips the inner meaning of life away, leaving a dark, bleak universe void of any real and lasting meaning by which the reader can transcend the shadows of life. The authors covered in this short intro do the opposite by enlivening the universe with meaning, playfulness, sobriety, and joy.

Lewis, Chesterton, Bunyan, Charles Williams, George MacDonald, Tolkien, L'Engle, and Walter Wangerin are discussed individually with a fantastic apologia for their literary forms as an introduciton. A great read! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great literary criticism of the Christian "Mythmakers".......2002-12-18

In this relatively short work, Rolland Hein manages to successfully review and critique the works of many Christian authors who created mythological stories. The critiques, ranging from Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" to Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings," are arranged chronologically, beginning with Dante and ending with contemporary 'mythmakers.'

The reviews not only cover the works and the Christian elements in them, they also provide useful information and good insight into the lives of these men and women. Quotes are presented, giving the authors' views on the art of Christian mythmaking and their attitudes toward the various ways we can discover truth.

This book is excellent. It is very well-written, and thoughtfully organized. The insight it provides on such authors as Tolkien, Lewis, and MacDonald is invaluable. If you are interested in one or more of these authors, get this book--it may help you to better understand them or even discover new authors and new worlds to explore.
