Ashore without a command--and on half-pay to boot--Jack Aubrey's prayers are answered when Stephen Maturin shows up with a secret mission for him. The two men have been ordered to the Cape of Good Hope. There they hope to dislodge the French garrisons on the islands of Mauritius and La Reunion. Alas, two of their own colleagues--a dilettante and a martinet--prove to be nearly as great an obstacle as the French themselves.

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Sounding every bit the proper English gentleman, narrator Tim Pigott-Smith gives a delightfully entertaining, yet appropriately restrained performance in this rollicking addition to the popular Aubrey/Maturin series. Blending historical fact with fiction, author Patrick O'Brian has crafted another captivating saga based on obscure events in maritime history. "The frigates never reached the Antilles. Nothing was heard of them until they hit Mauritius, where they upset the balance of powers in those waters entirely. The news of their presence reached England a very short while ago." In less competent hands, efforts of this nature might well sink under the weight of pedantic prose and mind-numbing minutiae, but O'Brian's impressive writing and the considerable vocal talents of Pigott-Smith help keep this adventure, and the long-lived series itself, riding high in the water. (Running time: 5 hours, 3 cassettes) --George Laney

Book Description

Captain Jack Aubrey is ashore on half pay without a command, until Stephen Maturin arrives with secret orders for Aubrey to take a frigate to the Cape of Good Hope under a commodore's pennant, there to mount an expedition against the French-held islands of Mauritius and La Réunion. But the difficulties of carrying out his orders are compounded by two of his own captains—Lord Clonfert, a pleasure-seeking dilettante, and Captain Corbett, whose severity pushes his crew to the verge of mutiny.

3 out of 5 stars Between Mediocrity and Excellence, yet Slowly Ascending.......2007-09-19

THE MAURITIUS COMMAND, the third novel in the series by Richard Patrick Russ (1914-2000) writing under the nom de plume of "Patrick O'Brian," is a distinct improvement over its predecessor, POST CAPTAIN. Russ/O'Brian seems to have abandoned his annoying experiments in writing techniques and has settled down to, more or less, a simple, straight-forward narrative style, which is imminently more readable.

As in POST CAPTAIN, this book does not continue precisely where its predecessor left off. However, in this case the missing events are easily understood and reconstructed in the reader's consciousness, and one does not feel too great a sense of shock and surprise at finding Jack Aubrey wedded to Sophie, whom we met in the previous volume. Also not surprisingly, we find that Aubrey's first love remains the sea and that he is not precisely the model of a perfect spouse. Of course, if one reads the author's real-life biography, Russ/O'Brian was far from a perfect husband, and one wonders whether he has somewhat patterned Aubrey after himself, but let us not read too much into that.

Soon, Aubrey is called to sea again, and the maritime action resumes and continues throughout the remainder of the book. Unlike POST CAPTAIN, this volume does not ramble for pages and pages about Aubrey's floundering on-shore life, thank goodness.

If one has a creative imagination, he could actually begin with THE MAURITIUS COMMAND, but the reader will certainly have a more complete appreciation of the characters if he has begun with the first volume, MASTER AND COMMANDER, and has approached each successive volume in order. Perhaps we should consider each novel as an additional chapter in one extraordinarily lengthy book. This is not necessarily a criticism, just a caution to a reader who might be tempted to sample Russ/O'Brian's work by starting in the middle of the series.

The author does engage in some character development, and, by this third book, the person of Dr. Stephen Maturin has become more complex that we suspected at first. Not only is he an unusually gifted physician, but it seems as though he has shadowy political connections and is as instrumental as a "secret agent" as he is as a doctor. While this certainly provides a most interesting twist to the character of the good doctor, I sense that Russ/O'Brian is learning about his creation at the same time we are. I do not feel that he prepared us for this sort of complication in Maturin's nature. While I enjoy the increased complexity in the doctor, I am not at all sure that the author intended this from the beginning but suspect that he may be developing his characters by whim rather than by intent.

THE MAURITIUS COMMAND keeps the reader entertained throughout its length, but, after having now read three books in the series, I feel that Russ/O'Brian is a somewhat superficial writer who realizes that he should paint some complexity into his characters to keep them from becoming mere stereotypes but does not quite understand how to do this. As a writer, he is certainly superior to the authors of what we used to call "dime novel bodice-rippers," but he is far from displaying the skill of a C. S. Forrester or a Herman Melville.

I would suggest that the Aubrey-Maturin series of maritime adventure books is decent entertainment but that the novels are not especially memorable. I also find myself wondering whether the surface action, that is, the plot or superficial story line, may not become repetitious and boring before one reaches the end of the multi-book series. I'm actually hoping that Russ/O'Brian will mature more fully as an author as he accrues more experience in writing the future volumes. We shall see how he handles the fourth book, THE IONIAN MISSION, next.

5 out of 5 stars More of the best naval writing ever put to paper.......2007-02-02

The Patrick O'Brian naval series of books are an acquired taste. If you love the first book, chances are that over the next few years you will find a way to work through the entire series. I do not recommend reading the book on its own. The true joy is seeing the transformation and progression of the two main characters.

The books are not for everyone, the writing style differs from what is found in 21st century adventure novels. The language is deep and the sentences are carefully crafted. While the books appear on the outside to be simple naval adventure tales, they are really deep studies in character development of a British naval officer and his best friend/ship surgeon/intelligence operative.

The Mauritius Command is one of the best books in the series. Almost the entire book takes place at sea. A few of the earlier book got bogged down whenever the lead character, naval officer Jack Aubrey, steps onto land, but at soon as he takes to sea the books take on a whole new life.

While the characters speak of honor and duty, the author makes no attempts to hide the rough, cruel, and violent life aboard British naval ships during the early 19th century. While not a quick read, if you are willing to invest the time and energy, the Mauritius Command and all of the books in the series are well worth you time.

5 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable entry in the series.......2006-09-01

The opening of The Mauritius Command brings us some changes, especially for Captain Jack Aubrey, who finds himself in the improbable role (for him) of husband and father of twins. Unsuccessful and hapless in his domestic life, he immediately jumps at the chance to leave England and take over a new command. Off the coast of Africa, Jack is promoted to commodore, putting him in command not just of his own ship but of a small fleet. In the course of the book, Jack stretches his abilities to the fullest as the British vie with the French for possession of several small islands crucial to controlling the India trade.

Of course, Dr. Stephen Maturin is on hand too. His facets as doctor, naturalist, and spy all come into play in the course of the novel. The previous novel, H.M.S. Surprise, involved incredible physical suffering, loss, and rejection for Stephen so it was nice to see him get a break in this installment. However, Stephen is still haunted by what has happened to him. A dark current runs through him that no doubt will resurface in future books.

The overriding issue explored in this novel is leadership and what it means to be a good leader. Jack has to deal with two very different captains serving under him, one of whom is a silly and vain man who is kind and familiar with his men and thus beloved by them. The other is a brave commander who exercises brutal tyranny with those under his rule. The weaknesses of both men lead to very different disasters.

In spite of the battles and some serious turns of event, The Mauritius Command involves more action and comedy and less angst than H.M.S. Surprise, making it a lighter read.

I enjoyed the whole series of these books, and was so enthralled I read them one after the other this summer. I highly recommend them!

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Aubrey-Maturin novel as Aubrey rises to Commodore.......2006-08-28

It's now part of literary legend that J.K. Rowling wrote the final chapter of the final book of her beloved Harry Potter series well before she wrote even half the novels. She knew how the story was going to end, and she said that allowed her to keep a tight rein on the characters, and resist the temptation to let the series spin out of control.

One wonders how Patrick O'Brian was able to keep his beloved characters, "Lucky Jack" Aubrey and Dr. Stephen Maturin, under such control over a series almost three times as long as Rowling's. "The Mauritius Command" is the fourth book in this amazing series, and O'Brian shows a deft command over both his subject matter and his characters. Often, by the fourth book in a series, the characters start to grow dull. Not only does the reader get the sense of retrodding the same ground, the author has to somehow overcome the sense that his characters are invincible.

O'Brian avoids both of these pratfalls with apparent ease. "Lucky Jack" may be lucky at sea, but he finds new and innovative ways of getting in trouble on land. Now, not only is he ashore with no ship and on half-pay, he must contend with his recently destitute mother-in-law and a brace of twins - girls, no less. Dr. Maturin arrives with the promise of a command and a daring mission - to take two French-controlled islands off Madagascar. Soon Aubrey is at the helm of a ship, but in addition to his usual cares and concerns, he must now cope with being a Commodore, commander over several ships, including several whose captains carry several tragic flaws. These various scenarios allow Aubrey to experience fresh troubles with which he has no actual experience, and wonder whether his old tactics will see him through.

Dr. Maturin continues to grow as a character, as well as in practical significance to the storyline. In "Master and Commander," he was basically a bystander, an observer of the naval action around him. Now, his role as an intelligence man (read, spy) becomes more important as he plays a vital role in helping the British governor assume his station . . . including playing a game of propaganda warfare against the French. Maturin also gets a few chances to practice his amazing surgical skills, breaks a few bones, and is confronted with his "dedication" to opium.

Not quite as funny as previous books (no drunken sloths to be seen), but with a little more action, "The Mauritius Command" is a defining book in this series. Even though this book, according to some, can be read out of sequence, I disagree since Aubrey's (temporary) promotion to Commodore falls in line with the other books.

Four timeless Christmas tales by celebrated romance authors comprise A Stockingful of Joy. Susan King's Snow Rose, set in 1573 in the rugged highlands of Scotland, tells the passionate story of Catriona MacDonald and Kenneth Fraser, prominent members of opposing clans. Catriona is in desperate need of help, and the snow rose--a cherished brooch given to seal a sacred pact made long ago by a Fraser family member--guarantees help from the Fraser family, or so Catriona believes. When the Frasers must regretfully deny Catriona her one wish, Kenneth Fraser swears to protect her, but he never dreamed he would lose his heart in the process.

Mary Balogh's charming tale of unexpected love, The Best Husband Money Can Buy, is set in 1818 Regency England. When Emma Stone's parents die, she has no choice but to stay on at school in Bath and teach. Emma's parents had not planned for their daughter's financial future, and so Emma's life of ease as part of the affluent Vaughn family comes to an end. But when a stroke of luck finds Emma rewarded with a kindly stranger's inheritance, a world of opportunities opens up to her, but her first priority is to find the best husband money can buy.

In A Light in the Window, Justin Dare transports readers to late 19th-century Wyoming, where all Morgan Blaine wants is a warm place to sleep for the night. But when he camps out in Faith Brown's barn, he gets much more than he bargained for. All alone in the Wyoming wilderness except for her sister's son, Faith needs more than a hand with the household chores. Morgan's painful childhood memories keep Faith at arms length until the light in the window shows him the way to her heart.

Jill Barnett's Boxing Day, set in Victorian New York, rounds out the holiday tales. Years of making his way as a professional boxer haven't exactly refined Conn Donoughue nor made him a likely candidate for love. But when Eleanor Rose Austen enters his life, all bets are off.

Book Description

Now readers can enjoy the magical spirit of Christmas with this romantic quartet of stories filled with all the hope and joy of the holiday season.

5 out of 5 stars All around great little stories to curl up with........2006-01-23

I am not an anthology fan but I love Mary Jo Putney and Jill Barnett.I hadn't read anything by Susan King yet (although I have a few of her backlist, I'm a paperback junkie and collect and collect until I can't remember what I have!)Justine Dare was new to me. These were sweet and romantic stories, you won't be disappointed with any of them. I personally thought A Light in the Window was second best after Susan King's The Snow Rose. I just love Scottish Highland tales. The other reviewer's pretty much hit the nail on the head with the descriptions. This little book of anthologies doesn't disappoint but rather makes you want to go out and find every book these fantastic authors have ever written! See what I mean? I'm addicted! You will be too with these engaging stories of love and triumph!

3 out of 5 stars delightful reprint.......2005-11-26

Careful, this is a reprint from 1997. It was deligtful then, it is delightful now.

Boxing Day is the only one I was not able to call to mind immediately.

Three stars because I wish they were longer!

4 out of 5 stars Putney and Barnett save the day.......2005-11-16

Although it was a good enough read, there was nothing outstanding in this Signet Christmas anthology to compare it to some of their anthologies of the 1990s.

I have never come across Susan King before. Although the bio-blurb indicates she has academic credentials in history, she needs to pull up her socks in terms of her story telling. I gather her story is a little filler in a series of books: constant references to this appear and I found it annoying. Her portrayal of life in early 17th century Scotland was too twee for me. And, by setting most of the story in an unheated, uninsulated, isolated bothey (shepherd's hut) she stretched credibility. Highland winters are cruel. No one in their right mind would set out to live alone like that in the winter! Also, I was so diverted by imagining the stench of horse and cow "droppings" in the little hut that any romantic feel to the story evaporated. Overall, this one was a dud.

Jill Barnett's story was unusual for me. Set at the end of the 19th century in the less than nice side of New York, it gave us some very different characters and a storyline that was quite unique. The story of a feisty, direct but oh-so-vulnerable 40 year old woman who is harbouring a passion for a beefy but gentle (and younger) boxer was well done. I liked the peripheral neighbourhood characters - immigrants and artisans who enhanced the narrative.

Justine Dare's story has been done a thousand times - the light in the window being a metaphor for coming home for Christmas. The hero is akin to a Clint Eastwood nameless drifter who only needs the love of a good woman to settle down and become an instant family man. A little too melodramatic for me.

Putney's offering was the best of the bunch. Although I thought the story line was a little tired, Putney's crisp, sharp style made it an engaging read. Perhaps because she seems to have been allocated more space, her story was better presented with characters that at least had a chance of developing. I think stories of fortune-hunting men are hard to pull off but she did it here with great skill. The happy conclusion was credible and rewarding.

Overall, Putney and Barnett saved the day and that's why I'm giving this one four instead of three stars.

4 out of 5 stars Snow Rose a five star read in a four star anthology.......1999-04-25

Although the other stories in this anthology were interesting reads none touched me like the Snow Rose by Susan King. It was a poignant story of how a young woman was able thru her own pain helped another deal with his pain, making the reader the winner. Having read the prequel of sorts to this nouvella, THE RAVEN'S WISH, I found that she has created a wonderful story for one of the many Fraser cousin's who needed their own. The story was believable and was perfect for the holiday season

creating a believable sense of hope that all will be well. It isn't easy to write a satisfying story in so few pages but Ms. King's writing ability shines thru with this most endearing story of a promise redeemed in a most unusual way by a most wonderful hero all to capture the love of his heroine. Of the stories in this anthology Ms King's gave the reader the most hope this holiday season and her other books are not to be missed by any who call themselves romance readers.

5 out of 5 stars One of the all around best anthologies I've ever read!.......1997-12-30

I grabbed this one with great expectations because it contained stories by two of my favorite authors and two other authors that I hadn't read but have heard good things about. And the rare thing happened, all of my expectations were met and I discovered a new author (King) whose backlist I'm probably going to track down.

The King story ["Snow Rose"] set in the Scottish Highlands is probably my favorite. I found it tender, sensual and gripping and all of the little historical details really placed me in the time period.

The Barnett story ["Boxing Day" - set in Victorian New York] was my second favorite, it was funny and witty, light and really hit the spot, the hero was very lovable and the heroine was an *older* woman.

The Putney story ["The Best Husband Money Can Buy" - set in Regency England] was also great about a woman who buys herself a hubby but I have to admit I was a little bothered by the fact that they were cousins (I know this was acceptable during that time but it still makes me squirm).

The Dare story ["A Light in the Window" - set in late 1800s Wyoming] was good but probably my least favorite because I felt it was too short and that she wasn't given enough space to fully develop her characters. I highly recommend this anthology for those who like 'em.

5 out of 5 stars A book that started my love o Hannah Howell.......2004-01-01

To be honest, I don't remember what this book was about, I do rememer though that I liked it. I read it about two years ago and have many since. I also do remember though that this was the first book by Hannah Howell I read and it wasn't the last. It started a cycle of reading her books. I'm always reading a new one or re-reading one of the old ones I own. I suggest you try this book despite the any negative reviews it got (or gets); you never know unless you try it yourself. If you don't like this one, you can try one of the many historical books (series) she writes (the ones I read) and see if you like those instead. Overall I think Hannah Howell is good writer and will appeal to those who try it. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A definite joy to read.......2000-10-25

If you like a light, heart-warming read then this definitely a book for you. This is two separate stories revolving around one theme.

The stories are based on two cousins, Deidre and Maura Kenney, and their promise to Deidre's dying father to complete a job he had which involved delivering some important documents to the Callahan brothers in Paradise,Montanna. These documents will save the Callahans' ranch. However, the women know it is dangerous and decide to take different routes to their destination in order to deflect attention from one another.

Here in lies the story of each woman's journey of how they meet danger, passion and abiding love, along with a Callahan brother to share it with.

The stories are tender, heart-warming and very humorous, especially Maura's story. The heroines are spunky and smart. The heroes are to die for. Take time out and read these stories I don't believe you will regret it. This is definitely a keeper for me.

        Book Description

Irene Radford, author of the new Arthurian novel Guardian of the Balance, returns to her most beloved series--with book three of the Dragon Nimbus History.

The great magical wars have come to an end. But in bringing peace, Nimbulan, the last Battlemage, has lost his powers. Dragon magic is the only magic legal to practice. And the kingdom's only hope against dangerous technology lies in the one place to which no dragon will fly....

        Praise for The Glass Dragon:

"Plenty of popular elements: an intelligent cat, an enchanted wolf, a red-headed witch, a missing prince, the apprentice mage with misunderstood powers, and, of course, dragons." --Locus

"Radford's considerable gifts as a mesmerizing storyteller shine with undeniable lustre." --Romantic Times

"An incredible story of courage and belief." --Affaire de Coeur

        5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2000-09-05

Irene Radford blends words and imagery together into this wonderfully delightful book. The third book of the Dragon Nimbus History is just as fascinating as the ones preceeding it. The use of different names for places fits in wonderfully with the plot, like for instance "Terra" referring to "Earth". I do wish that in the next book, Nimbulan will get his magic back.

2 out of 5 stars Intriguing, but ultimately disappointing.......2000-01-16

'The Renegade Dragon' disappoints both as a novel and a story. Radford's writing is painfully stilted at points. A case in point 'We must not destroy this world called Kardia Hodos as my people destroyed Terra' (p. 3) I understand why Radford put that in, she's trying to relay information to the reader, but that's just awful. There are several other instances which lamentably I didn't jot down.

Radford's universe in one where the people on this planet are apparently descended from human settlers. Radford uses abbreviations for modern amenities. Electricity = 'tricity. Remotes = 'motes. Subsititute kardia for earth in every form (ie. kardiaquakes). It's not very imaginative.

Perhaps the book's most egregious error is in a machines=bad slant. Radford spends the entire book telling how humankind started a virulent plague which wipes out huge numbers of people, all because of technology. Now the kind people of Kardia Hodos must stay free of technology so they won't die as well. It's ridiculous. The only way the good people can stay free of the disease is from a tree called 'Tambootie'. It sounds like a word a 5-year-old could invent.

Couple this with cardboard characters (characters named Scarface, Hunchback, and Red Beetle are not surprisingly evil) and you've got the makings for a disappointing read.

Intriguingly, this is the second DAW book to come out in December that had a character named Scarface and used 'ley' to tap into magical powers.

        Book Description

As long as the people of Pern could remember, the Holds had protected them from Thread, the deadly silver strands that fell from the sky and ravaged the land. In exchange for sanctuary in the huge stone fortresses, the people tithed to their Lord Holders, who in turn supported the Weyrs, whose dragons were Pern's greatest weapon against Thread.

But not everyone on Pern was part of that system of mutual care and protection, particularly those who had been rendered holdless as punishment for wrongdoing. And there were some, like Jayge's trader clan, who simply preferred the freedom of the roads to the security of a hold. Others, like Aramina's family, had lost their holds through injustice and cruelty. For all the holdless, life was a constant struggle for survival.

Then, from the ranks of the criminals and the disaffected, rose a band of renegades, led by the Lady Thella. No one was safe from Thella's depredations, and now her quarry was Aramina, reputed to have a telepathic link with dragons. But when Thella mistakenly vented her rage on Jayge's family, she made a dangerous mistake. For Jayge was bent on revenge . . . and he would never let her have the girl who heard dragons!

5 out of 5 stars The Renegades of Pern.......2007-10-02

Very good. I knew I was hooked on the Pern stories when I started buying them in hardback instead of waiting 6-8 months for the paperback.

5 out of 5 stars Great if you like Sci Fiction.......2007-05-13

The Pern series of books from Anne McCaffery are great. Better if you read them in order, (look online at her website for recommendations). This is futuristic science fiction, but if you liked Aregon, you would probably like this series too

3 out of 5 stars The Renegades of Pern.......2004-07-04

I was somewhat dissapointed by this book. This is the 2nd one in the Pern Series I read, I had just finished all the Wyers of Pern before. I really enjoyed the large role the dragons got to play in Wyers of Pern, this book lacks it. You don't really get to see into the telepathic relationship the riders have with their dragons. It's exciting, but I really miss the dragons. The wyers are put into a bad light early on, and I was confused about the Leadership of Benden Wyer, when did F'lar and Lessa take over? The book is okay, but she's done better.

5 out of 5 stars Renegades of pern.......2004-05-29

I recomend this book if you are reading the entire Pern series in chronological order. Renegades will seem choppy if you read it alone and most of the secnes will not make sense if read before the other books. Renegades fills in a lot of time gaps that reading the others leave out. I recomend this book to all Pern fans.

4 out of 5 stars Pern readers, don't miss this one!.......2004-05-11

When I first read this book, years ago, I remember being a little disappointed. It wasn't as good as the Dragonflight trilogy or even as good as the Harper Hall trilogy. I'm re-reading the series in chronological order now, and I want to warn people not to listen to the negative reviews!

Yes, it's maybe not quite as enjoyable, it tells stories of the less-pleasant sides of Pern life, but it also tells things that you must hear if you want the whole story. You must read Renegades in order to be properly set up for All the Weyrs of Pern. This is the book that, if nothing else, tells more about the initial excavation of Landing and the discovery of AIVAS, and it introduces Jayge and Aramina of the Paradise River Hold from Dolphins of Pern.

I enjoyed this book more on second reading than I did the first time. The Pern series is five stars. If you enjoy the series, don't skip this four star book based on negative reviews.

              Book Description

With a smiling face on the cover that wonderfully shows why God made babies, this book demonstrates to children that Jesus promises them a lifetime of love and care. He is with them from birth onward--in their family, friends, neighbors, and the natural world. The photos show children in such everyday activities as playing, praying, sharing meals, and so on. The photos also portray a broad array of multicultural images. Jesus is with children in all these ways and in all these people, and His every manifestation is a reason for rejoicing. Also, just as we forgive and comfort others, Jesus forgives and comforts us and stays with us as we grow. For all Christian denominations, children ages 0 to 5.
