We owe 1902's The Hound of the Baskervilles to Arthur Conan Doyle's good friend Fletcher "Bobbles" Robinson, who took him to visit some scary English moors and prehistoric ruins, and told him marvelous local legends about escaped prisoners and a 17th-century aristocrat who fell afoul of the family dog. Doyle transmogrified the legend: generations ago, a hound of hell tore out the throat of devilish Hugo Baskerville on the moonlit moor. Poor, accursed Baskerville Hall now has another mysterious death: that of Sir Charles Baskerville. Could the culprit somehow be mixed up with secretive servant Barrymore, history-obsessed Dr. Frankland, butterfly-chasing Stapleton, or Selden, the Notting Hill murderer at large? Someone's been signaling with candles from the mansion's windows. Nor can supernatural forces be ruled out. Can Dr. Watson--left alone by Sherlock Holmes to sleuth in fear for much of the novel--save the next Baskerville, Sir Henry, from the hound's fangs?
Many Holmes fans prefer Doyle's complete short stories, but their clockwork logic doesn't match the author's boast about this novel: it's "a real Creeper!" What distinguishes this particular Hound is its fulfillment of Doyle's great debt to Edgar Allan Poe--it's full of ancient woe, low moans, a Grimpen Mire that sucks ponies to Dostoyevskian deaths, and locals digging up Neolithic skulls without next-of-kins' consent. "The longer one stays here the more does the spirit of the moor sink into one's soul," Watson realizes. "Rank reeds and lush, slimy water-plants sent an odour of decay ... while a false step plunged us more than once thigh-deep into the dark, quivering mire, which shook for yards in soft undulations around our feet ... it was as if some malignant hand was tugging us down into those obscene depths." Read on--but, reader, watch your step! --Tim Appelo

A Detective Classic That Fizzles as Literature.......2007-10-06
"The Hound of the Baskervilles," originally published in 1902, is an engrossing "who-dun-it" murder mystery, featuring observant detective Sherlock Holmes and his comparatively humble partner Dr. Watson at their best. Labelled "a classic among classics" by mystery aficionados, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's masterfully written tale poses the problem--who killed Sir Charles Baskerville?--and offers well-placed clues en route to uncovering the resolution. Set a few hours by train from London on the eerie Devonshire moor, where commoners affirm occasional sightings of a huge black hound-shaped beast, the story offers a suspenseful blend of science and the supernatural, with infallible Holmesian logic predictably winning out by story's end.
My only reservation about the book is that it is perhaps a little too formulaic in composition. Among the murder suspects are many: the butler Barrymore and his wife, the neighboring Dr. Mortimer, the argumentative lawyer Frankland with his telescope, the energetic butterfly catcher Stapleton and his sister, the typist Laura Lyons in the adjacent village, the escaped convict Selden, a mysterious black-bearded man seen in London, and, of course, the elusive hound who murmurs and roars on the moor. Watson's thorough narration and detailed letters to Holmes carefully lead us step-by-step through many of the possibilities; however, in my opinion, the overall plotline is more methodical and prematurely revealing than it needs to be. Already by two-thirds of the way through the story, when Holmes, who is supposed to be in London, surprisingly appears on the moor as "the man on the tor," we learn who the murderer must be, and the remaining one-third of the book is devoted to detective-style collection of evidence and explanation and recap of the mystery. That's fine as a study for detectives-in-training, but might the book have had a chance of rising higher as a great work of literature if the author had put more effort into concealing Holmes' conclusion until later in the story, thereby creating a more sustained degree of suspense and intrigue?
For the benefit of anyone who has not yet read the book, I do not want to give too much away, but as a hint in solving the murder mystery I will say that it helps to "follow the money" as you read. After childless Sir Charles, who had made his fortune in overseas speculation, mysteriously dies, next-of-kin nephew Sir Henry returns to England to take control of the estate. Assuming there is some financial motivation for the crime, as there usually is, who among the suspects, especially in light of their past circumstances and misfortune, could profit most from seeing both Charles and Henry dead? Clue: no, the butler didn't do it!
A triumph of atmosphere.......2007-09-17
The setting is the star of Arthur Conan Doyle's atmospheric "The Hound of the Baskervilles," his most popular Sherlock Holmes story. With its barren fog-shrouded wastes, Neolithic ruins, and the treacherous Grimpen Mire, the bleak moor Doyle describes in such delicious detail is the ideal background for a creepy Gothic mystery. Does a cursed hellhound stalk the last heir to the Baskerville fortune? Only Sherlock Holmes can answer that, but for a good portion of the novel Watson is left to investigate on his own. The absence of the hyper-rational detective allows the supernatural mystique of this puzzle develop without distraction before the master detective steps in to dispel the mystery. This is an uncommonly fun read.
The Best Sherlock Holmes -- And That's Sayin' Plenty!.......2007-09-12
I have read and enjoyed many a good Sherlock Holmes story (e.g. "The Red-Headed League" is a winner), but at the very top of the book stack I would place "The Hound of the Baskervilles". Who could ever forget the atmosphere that Arthur Conan Doyle evokes by his use of those misty moors!
In teaching English (Literature) to a class of 7th & 8th grade boys, I was at first a bit hesitant to introduce this novel as our text. Would a group of squirrelly junior high boys find anything of interest in a book written in 1901? Answer: I needn't have worried. They loved it (and so did I)! The fog from the moors drifted right into our classroom.
First-rate mystery tale with one of the most famous fictional characters ever created. ENJOY! (But keep an eye out for a frightful luminescent hound next time you're walking home at night - just in case).
Super Reader.......2007-08-02
I have lost track of how many times I have read this, or how many different adaptations I have watched, or listened to. I still enjoy it every single time. A true classic. Suspense, horror and sneakiness abound, particularly between the major characters. What is going on? It keeps you captivated all along, should not be too many people that don't like this. Large black ghost hounds, your Jane Austen type gentlemen in trouble, dodgy locals, and the brilliance of Holmes.
Coyle Energetically Ignites His Story [132].......2007-07-08
Some proclaim Doyle's greatest work to be "The Hound of the Baskervilles." And, it may be just that.
Set on a British estate, mixing science fictional accounts with old wive's tales and mythology, it is not a standard tale of urban sleuthing. This involves Holmes outside of London, and working with the "plebians" or "ordinary people" in his mission to save "Sir Henry" from encountering the same fate as his uncle Sir Charles Baskerville.
There are tales of adultery, slanting lies and rendevous at late hours of the night in the moor which flanks the estate of Sir Henry. The evenings overlooking the moor are often disturbed by the noisy backdrop of a hound howling, but not the sound of a hound ever heard by anyone before.
The moor is dangerously dotted with mires in which a step could mean one's end. Muddy and deep, the step into such places becomes a trap for the unwary. Hence, the moor includes dangers beyond its sounds, it is a place where young and old should avoid unless they know which places are safe and which are not.
An entomologist named Stapleton knows the moor inside and out. He befriends Sir Henry and Watson. He cannot meet Sherlock Holmes who must stay in London for other cases. This story follows the day-to-day discoveries of Watson, more than others.
In the end, the intertwining of evil that haunts the people in the tiny hamlet becomes staggering and one must wonder - could a village of such small size really have so many people within it keeping such deadly secrets without one of the others (if not all of the others) knowing? Probably not. But, who cares.
And, I lastly note that Doyle certainly was more than a mystery writer. His prose rivals Forster or Waugh. For instance, he wrote:"We looked back on it now; the slanting rays of a low sun turning the streams into threads of gold and glowing on the red earth new turned by the plough and the broad tangle of the woodlands.. . Now and then we passed a moorland cottage, walled and roofed with stone, with no creeper to break its harsh outline. Suddenly we looked down into a cuplike depression, patched with stunted oaks and firs which had been twisted and bent by the fury of years of storm."
With prose like that, you only conclude: This is more than a mystery novel.

Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly good.......2007-01-09
While the first Tomb Raider novel was better, Man of Bronze was still pretty good. It's odd, because the movies are pretty weak and the games are only so-so, but the Tomb Raider novels are generally a lot of fun. And you don't exactly equate Lara Croft with reading, or at least I don't. But a good fun yarn perfect for a few days' distraction.
ok.......2005-07-06
Out of the other Tomb Raider novels I have read, this one was the best. The storyline was better, and it seemed to capture the feel of the games more than the others. But at some parts it was confusing. The cover shows Ekhardt (Angel of Darkness), but he isn't even mentioned. Also, reading "New Strategy" a gazillion times gets a bit boring.
Good, but..........2005-02-04
I found The Man of Bronze to be an OK read. It was light and entertaining. It was also much longer than most light and entertaining books, which was a nice difference.
I will agree that the author's descriptions of events were strained, but his descriptions of items were quite good.
I found the dialogue to be terrible though. Lara said 'New Strategy.' about 7 times during the book... three times in the same fight.
Characterization was also strained. Lara and her typical friends that were highly expert commandos, but kept getting taken hostage.
I would also like to point out that Mr. Gardner missed a couple of technical details that were jarring to one in the know. For example, the Mi-24 Havoc Attack Helicopter has wheels instead of skids and is heavily armored.
All in all, a good, if quite light read. I will say that it kept me turning pages until the end.
Could have been great, but deliberately is not.......2005-01-18
This book could have been great, but the author chose not to make it so. First I want to deal with the technical side, which is generally very good. The format is a bit like a computer game: each chapter title is a specific location. The descriptions are vivid and exact. They are not quite graphic. However, Lara's commentary when she is fighting can sometimes be a bit disturbingly blunt and callous. With that said, most of her commentary adds to the story and is in character. The general dialogue is good. The action scenes are excellent, and sometimes very creative.
The area where the book is flawed is the treatment of the story. The first quarter of the book is an excellent beginning: despite prodigious efforts, her friend is killed, and Lara is offered the chance to both help a (hopefully) good secret society reclaim its artefacts and get revenge. The last quarter of the book is the endgame of a battle spanning millennia, and is a pretty good conclusion to the story. The half the book in between is typical get the artefact, elude the bad guys tomb raiding. We know it's typical because the author says so right in the text. Whenever a scene is a standard type in the adventure genre, such as Lara gets the artefact and the bad guys take hostages, she points out in irritation that this is what always happens to her. She complains about clichéd dialogue too, even when she says it. Also, there are extinct monsters included pretty much because it's a standard feature of the games, with the barest justification for them in the story. Finally, Lara's attitude is that the tomb raiding is a boring slog she is forced to endure while she would rather be doing something else. Her negative attitude sucks the life out of the adventure.
This could have been an excellent book. The author intentionally made it otherwise. That leaves me feeling quite frustrated, much more than the enjoyment I got from the decent last quarter of the book. I cannot recommend this.
Book Description
Experiencing the death of a parent is a traumatic experience for anyone. For men, though, the death of a father is uniquely and deeply traumatic. Whether or not a father and son are close in life, they are undeniably connected-and this is acutely evident to a man when his father dies. At that moment, a man realizes how much of his identity has been defined by his father. The powerful emotions and life adjustments that follow Dad's passing catch most men completely off guard.
Authors Dave Veerman and Bruce Barton both experienced the life-altering deaths of their own fathers, and in When Your Father Dies they share not only their experiences but also the experience of more than sixty men, including Max Lucado, Chuck Colson, Hank Hannegraaff, and Bill Hybels. They also include insight and practical advice from professional counselors to prepare readers for the emotional struggles that accompany the death of a father.
Veerman and Barton's biblical perspective on grief and long-term life adjustments, along with important sidebars and probing discussion questions, will help men understand their emotions, heal other damaged relationships, and even change the way they parent their own children. Many women will want to read the book so that they can understand the complex emotions and changes the men they care about are going through.
Customer Reviews:
A great book with a Christian dimension.......2007-02-08
In this wonderful book, two Christian authors discuss the subject of the death of a father, and its affects it has on sons. Based on years of working with men, both old and young, this book shows how the death affects men, what they experience and how they deal with it. But, it goes on to discuss how men should face the future, and think about the legacy that they themselves will leave. As an added bonus, each chapter ends with a series of question to make you think about what you are going through.
Overall, I found this to be a great book. Yes, it was written by two conservative Christians, so expect it to have a Christian slant. In fact, I liked the Christian slant, which added a real dimension of spirituality that many books don't bother to discuss.
I am now a son without a father, and it's something that affects me much more than I ever expected. I am glad that I got this book, which really spoke to me. (I never picked up this book without ending up with tears in my eyes.) I think this book is great, and I give it my highest recommendations.
Comforting and Supportive.......2006-02-26
Of all the books that I have read in my lifetime, this is one that I wish I never had to. The death of a father is one of the most difficult things that we can ever expererience and one that I went through recently. This book cuts through the trite and simple ("He's in a better place" etc) and offers a viewpoint that is more the way of a fellow traveler along a very difficult passage in life. I left this book knowing that I was not alone or crazy, and with a sense of having my feelings acknowledged as reasonable and necessary components of the healing process. The authors touch a nerve with this work and I would highly recommend it for any man who unfortunately finds himself in need of it.
A Must Read for men of any age, who have experienced their Dad dying........2006-02-23
My daughter bought this book for me while she was home for my father's funeral. It was such a good "source" to help me begin the journey of not having a "living" father. My mother had died 10 years earlier, but it is not the same experience. Since reading this book, I have purchased 4 more, for a brother, my 2 sons, and my late best-friend's son. Whether you are 60 like me, or 30's , it still helps. It is full of "experiences" shared by other men they interviewed.
Great book on a tough topic.......2005-08-02
This is a fantastic book for men or women dealing with a death of their father. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
SHORT, BUT HELPFUL!.......2007-03-20
When I read this book, I was through most of the stages of divorce--I thought. Laura addresses many different aspects I never thought of and answers questions I thought only I had. The book is short, there still are so many questions I would have for her if she were sitting with me in my living room. But she does give VERY useful advice for family and friends of the one getting divorced. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone going through a divorce or anyone that cares for someone going through a divorce.
Voice of Experience.......2006-11-10
The author has succeeded in providing answers to many of the tough questions that people experiencing divorce have. She is very straight forward, but not in a harsh way. Expect her answers to favor marriage and care for children. You may not find the justification you are looking for, but you will get caring advice from an experienced and mature Christian perspective.
Highly recommended!

Marriages sometimes come to an end. Divorce can be extremely difficultbut it also can be a time for spiritual and personal growth.
What does Judaism say about ending a marriage? How can its teachings help you to make hard decisions about divorce that will affect you, your family, friends, and particularly your children? Topics covered include:
The existential question: Why is this happening to me?
The hardest question: To leave or not to leave; how do I decide?
The guilt question: Is divorce kosher?
The psychological question: What do I do with all this anger?
The most painful question: How do we tell the kids?
The ritual question: How can I get closure?
The awkward question: What do I say to others?
The legal question: Should I mediate or litigate?
The most important question: How do we continue to raise children together?

Customer Reviews:
Rabbis and other clergy should be on the side of marriage!.......2006-07-17
This book inspired my wife to divorce. She did not want to go to counselling, she did not want to attempt to work out our problems. I spoke with this Rabbi and he readily dispenses the advice to divorce. He totally glosses over the trauma it brings to children with "they will be all right" and let me tell you -- they are NOT all right. Even if they do recover, that is like making the arguement that since kids recover from broken arms fairly quickly and easily that it is ok to break their arms!
The book is basically a how to guide for a civilized divorce, and some studies show that children actually do worse with this kind of divorce (not mentioned in the book). Furthermore, given the emotional investment of a marriage, the so called civilized divorce rarely happens. Divorce is a serious matter and should not be undertaken lightly. Certainly there are marriages that should end, but there should be a process that one goes through to reach that point, not just we are having trouble: let's divorce.
Advice from a Rabbi that lives in the real world.......2003-03-18
In "Divorce is a Mitzvah" Rabbi Perry Netter takes the reader through a Jewish perspective of divorce. A mitzvah is defined as a response to the voice of God that commands us to behave in a particular way. While Jewish scholars have many writings on the importance and symbolic significance of marriage and being an ideal couple, there is a dearth of writings concerning divorce.
Rabbi Netter tackles this problem and many of the hardest questions of divorce. Chapters include: "Why is this happening to me?", "Is divorce Kosher?", "What do I do with all this anger?", "How do we tell the kids?", "How do I get to closure?", and "How do we continue to raise children together?". All this is done from an understanding and compassionate position within the Jewish belief system. The book is a highly recommended read for Jewish readers seeking answers on the question of divorce.
Another Great Reviews!.......2002-12-11
For anyone considering a divorce, for those in the throes of one, or for
those still recovering from one, the title of Netter's book alone will
lighten your burden--Divorce is a Mitzvah, A Practical Guide to Finding
Wholeness and Holiness When Your Marriage Dies. In the book, Netter tells
us what Judaism has to say about divorce. He also discusses the related
topics of love, marriage, anger, and loneliness, using stories from the
Torah to make his points. But as anyone who has ever read a Torah passage
will attest, virtually every word can have multiple translations--or at
least nuances--and this rabbi, a divorced man himself, tends to put a spin
on these tales that can salve the souls of the divorced.
Quotes from the Jerusalem Post on this book.......2002-11-21
"I wish I had read Divorce Is A Mitzvah when I was going through my divorce. Not only would it have given me much-needed moral support but it might have helped to dramatically reduce the levels of anger and recrimination between my soon-to-be ex-husband and myself. I have read other Jewish books on the subject of divorce but none are as loving, caring and helpful as this one; Netter is a human being speaking to other human beings. In addition to offering sage advice, he really does manage to fulfill his aim of ending "the silence in the Jewish world about divorce, and in a small way, help to alleviate much of the unnecessary pain and suffering that seem to be so much a par tof hte ontemporary divorce." This book should be required reading for all couples because the device that it gives and the divine clarity that it sheds will only help them deal even better with their existing marriages -- let alone if they have to come to the sad solution of divorce." ... reviewed in the Jerusalem Post, November 20, 2002
