The Dork of Cork.......2007-06-27
I just keep buying more copies and giving them to friends... EVERYONE loves this book. It is written so exquisitely beautiful, and alarmingly funny.. Hysterical characters, so human .... Chet Raymo-- What a man, what a writer...... buy it, you will be happy you did.
Moving story and a near perfect use of language.......2006-08-28
I don't know what I enjoyed more, the actual story of these fascinating characters, or the sheer beauty of the language. I quickly came to know and care about all the people here: Frank, whose dwarfism makes him ugly in his own and others' eyes; Bernadette, his mother; and all the others who revolve around them like planets around the stars.
Perhaps it does getsa bit too philosophical at times, and probably should have been about 50-100 pages shorter to avoid the continued reiteration of the theme, but when the writing is so alluring, how can I carp about length?
Retreive this from oblivion and enjoy...........2004-04-17
Chet Raymo's "The Dork of Cork" follows the night sky ruminations and meanderings of Frank Bois, diminutive bastard son of Bernadette Bois, an ambiguously sympathetic character whom you`ll either love to hate or hate to love. She is of a most rare beauty and a rarer-yet ethos and morality, particularly where she and her dwarf son have ended up: in manically-embattled Christian Ireland (and briefly in the dusty Bible Belt of America.)
Trapped in his absurd dwarfism and his mother's life of amoral hedonism, Frank takes us along on his life-long quest for existential value and a platonic ideal of beauty. This duality is made all the more profound, poignant, and ironic by the stark contrast between mother and son wherein each complements the other in a sort of yin-yang template of who we all are. Where one is grotesquely stumpy and grounded in his life, the other is breathtakingly aquiline and ethereal in hers. Yet for each, the essence of self belies the exterior image and hones in on the narrative's excellent opening directive: "Begin with beauty." Mr. Raymo, for his part, does, then maintains its presence to the tale's satisfying conclusion.
Narrative gems like this, "discovered" after a decade's wait on the shelves, again remind me: Good literature waits for us as long as necessary.
This one goes to the top of my list.......2003-07-18
Enough said about the book in the previous reviews. I just want to add my 5 stars. I am so happy to have discovered Chet Raymo. This book has beautiful characters, lines that you want to re-read or memorize, astronomy (not astrology...as you'll see) all told from the perspective of a very unusual character whom you will love by the end of the book.
EMERGENCY EMERGENCY (dont overlook this one).......2003-01-17
you must not overlook this book. its truly one of the greatetest books Ive ever read. I read it a few years back and its one of the few that is so well written and enjoyable, that I am rereading it. This book is a gift to my soul. Its a truly beautiful story and has been undeservedly overlooked. dont let yourself miss out on what could very well be one of the best books youll ever pick up. its the story of a humanbeing youll grow to love.. and maybe even relate to.

Frank Bois is 43 years old and 43 inches tall, but his yearnings are as wide and deep as the night sky he contemplates from his rooftop in Cork, Ireland. The Dork of Cork is his story, a fictional autobiography that captures the emotions of the listener from its provocative opening line to its surprising, but touching, ending. With intelligence and vision that rise far above his diminutive size, Frank shares his engaging meditations on beauty: in the stars, in lovely and unattainable women, and even in mathematics.

Wolff and Joe.......2007-04-04
I thought the premise of this series was fantastic. It deals with bigotry, hate, and love. Reading about Wolff and his son Joe meeting their match in Mary is such a joy. Then knowing what Joe goes on to do with his life is just superb. I really wish that she had gone on to do books on the other brothers.
I love LH's Mackenzie Men and Woman ..........2007-01-24
Don't miss these installments in the Mackenzie family saga by Linda Howard. Mackenzie's Mountain starts the series off and Mackenzie's Mission follows along seamlessly. Strong passion, strong men and stronger women makes them modern Romantic Fiction at it's best!
These are my all time favorite leisure re-reads!
Howard Never Fails to Deliver.......2007-01-16
Linda Howard writes so wonderfully that you actually feel as if you are physically a part of the story. Very emotional and true page turners. Mackenzie's Mountain and Mackenzie's Mission are some of her best work.
Mackenzie's Legacy.......2006-08-08
I own all books about the Machenzie's. This series is my favorite by far. I have read them over and over so many times I could recite them out loud. I have read many series of books by different authors, but this series is THE BEST. Buy it and read it. You won't be sorry.

Another Great Read!.......2006-07-04
Linda Howard has not written one book that was not superb. What I like most about Wolf and every other hero she writes is the alpha-quality. In this day and age, it would be nice to find a man who has the "primitive" (according to some people) instinct to take care of his own. I think Mary was the perfect heroine for Wolf. She brought out his protective qualities. The story was wonderful. I have read the entire MzKenzie collection and Linda Howard does a wonderful job every time. I hope she continues to write the strong, alpha-males only she can create. I don't mind if the female is a little vulnerable. Every book does NOT need to have a hard-as-nails heroine.
I continue to enjoy reading her stories again and again.
Linda Howard's Best.......2006-01-12
I have had this book for over ten years. It is a keeper. I think this is the best book that Linda Howard ever wrote.
It speaks of prejudice, a love that knows no bounds, and the start of a legacy. There are about six books dealing with the MacKenzie family, including each of Wolf and Mary's children, including Wolf son from a previous marriage and an adopted son.
It begins with the love of a dedicated teacher and a half-breed Indian and the trials they must go through. I love these books. Each one can stand alone, but they do include at least one relative or so in each story. I highly recommend each and every book. All include high adventure, danger, love, and a family loyalty.
Mackenzie's Family, MacKenzie's Magic, Mackenzie's Mission, MacKenzie's Pleasure, A Game of Chance.
light enjoyable read.......2005-07-14
I thought this book was pretty good. It was quick and enjoyable, however I found the heroine to be mousy and at times annoying. Other than that it was a good book.
Thank you LH for not letting me down.......2004-07-22
My mistake was before I read the book, I read a review - a review of how the lead woman, Mary, was weak. It doesn't make you weak when you know what you want. Honestly, I would see Mary anything BUT weak! She went out of her way to help a young man get an education.
Mackenzie's Mountain is a great book. The only downpoint I saw was that the first few chapters started out pretty fast, but the rest of the book was so enjoyable.
I can't wait to read what happens with Joe in Mackenzie's Mission!
Well written as always...but...heroine was a tad stupid?.......2004-04-18
I do NOT like to knock a Howard because she is one of my FAVORITE authors, but this heroine was way over the top in the 'stupid department.' I realize this was written in the 1980's when the heroine was expected to be shy and reserved and virginial, yet strong and independent, but she came out as stupid (wince...I am so sorry Ms Howard) and very, very unbelievably ignorant of men and the world in general. She gave off this 'kill 'em all' attitude that just was nausiating to me.
A 29 year old spinster extrordinaire with a knack for letting the readers and the hero listen to her moronic and irritating dribble about her uptight and weird Aunt Ardith's rules of conduct got to be too much for me and I just lost any respect for her or why the hero Wolf would even like her.
A few of the secondary characters called her 'goody-goody' and I have to agree. She was a little too perfect and old fashioned for her age. Wolf deserved much better. The naivety was so bad that I was shaking my head and laughed outright when Wolf whispered a 'dirty' word in her ear about the sex act he'd like to perform on her and she had the gall to act confused and ask him what it meant and to show her. Whatever. Anyway, this is the 1980s, not the 1880s. Come on, get real.
This is the first in the Mackenzie series, which includes MacKenzie's Mission, MacKenzie's Pleasure, MacKenzie's Magic and A Game of Chance.
Mary Elizabeth Potter is a spinster in every way imaginable. The clothes and the 'sensible shoes' she wears. She has no idea if she will ever fall in love and doesn't look for it. Things change when she volunteers to go to the small town of Ruth, WY as a schoolteacher. She is a great teacher and puts her whole self into teaching children.
One child gets her attention, Wolf MacKenzie's son. She must convince his father he belongs back in school, not at home working. Getting stranded on his mountain wasn't her plan, but nevertheless, Wolf comes upon her and thinks she must be an idiot.
Mary proves that his son is made for more and tutors him. Wolf realizes he can love again, even if he is an ex-con half-breed. But the town doesn't approve and lets them know.
Can they get past the racism that simmers below the surface and be accepted?

Book Description
Karl Schroeder is one of the new stars of hard SF. His novels, Ventus and Permanence, have established him as a new force in the field. Now he extends his reach into Larry Niven territory, returning to the same distant future in which Ventus was set, but employing a broader canvas.nbsp;Lady of Mazes isnbsp;the story of Teven Coronal, a ringworld with a huge multiplicity of human civilizations. It's the story of what happens when the delicate balance of coexisting worlds is completely destroyed, when the fabric of realitynbsp;itself is torn. nbsp;Brilliant but troubled Livia Kodaly is Teven's only hope against invaders both human and superhuman whonbsp;threaten thenbsp;fragile ecologies and human diversity. Filled with action, ideas, and intellectual energy, Lady of Mazes is the hard SF novel of the year.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-04
Hoo-boy. That is kind of how you feel when you get deeper into this. It starts off reminiscent of John C. Wright's Golden Age, and force-multiplies itself by way of Greg Egan, Charles Stross' Accelerando and things like this. Set in the same place, with the same 3340 entity as Ventus.
If you stop occasionally as small pieces of your mind melt, don't be surprised.
An exploration of the nature of reality with respect to being human, when posthumans, AIs and others run around being able to almost do whatever they like.
It starts with a girl's perceptions changed because of an accident, and she uncovers layer after layer and motivation after motivation of all the different powers in her world and those around it.
Living In A Post-Singularity Solar System..........2007-09-02
I'll start by listing a quote by Stephen Baxter on the cover of the current paperback, which is, "This is hard science fiction at its best". Well, mabe, but I have read an awful lot of good hard sci-fi already. As hard science fiction attempts to extrapolate the current level of science and technology into the future, in this case very far into the future, it has a place in our society to open our minds to future possibilities, and Karl Schroeder seems to do an excellent job here, and as usual in hard sci-fi, no fantasy please! This novel was very entertaining, entrancing at times, with a dynamic plot and great character development. At the very beginning of the novel you have to be patient as it takes a bit to liven up, but it is a possibly insightful peak into our transhuman and posthuman future that may someday become a classic read of it's genre.
mushy.......2007-08-08
Despite the gushing praise on the cover this is not "hard" sci-fi in any conventional sense. It's really quite mushy. I read Ventus and Permanence and enjoyed them, but this one is making me re-think purchasing any more of his books.
a book of ideas.......2007-02-21
I loved this book. I usually only buy books after I've done a lot of searching and research at Amazon, finding books that chain off of other books I like. However, this book I randomly picked up at a bookstore, but was interested when the back cover and pre-title page quotes were from authors I was into, Baxter, Stross, etc. So I bought it, and it sat on a shelf for a few months. I just went on my honeymoon and brought it along to read on the airplane, and I was sucked in! There aren't many sci-fi books that made me want to fill-in my wife as I went, to tell her about the latest plot twist, the newest shock that made me chuckle in understanding while I read it. Luckily for her, I told her just enough that she wants to read it to, but without spoiling. For me, the worth of this novel can be summed up in this: I think I'm going to re-read it in a year or so. That's an honor that very, very few books have recieved for me. Most sci-fi novels, like movies, I read once and then move on, not likely to ever check it out of the library again, let alone feel the need to own them. But this is a book I'm happy to own, as I think it'll get read a few more times in the coming years...
What? No Virtual Toto?.......2006-11-13
Karl Schroeder's premise in his fascinating but frustrating "Lady of Mazes" is that different cultures with different social structures require different technologies. To illustrate this point, he creates a world called "The Coronal," with its array of different societies (called manifolds), all maintained by AIs. The tech is known as the "Inscape," which creates virtual realities through which its citizens perceive the world. Also, to achieve this technological purity the author seems to advocate, there are "tech locks," which prohibit this or that manifold from creating an inappropriate tech. That seemingly allows any particular culture to be as primitive or advanced as it desires.
We zoom in first on Westerhaven, where the inhabitants travel in AI-generated "societies," and sometimes appear virtually and sometimes in person, wearing whatever clothing they imagine themselves to be in. (When somebody gets bored, they depart for a chat elsewhere and send in one of their animas). Then we zoom in on one of the inhabitants, Livia Kodaly, who (as we are constantly and perhaps not entirely necessarily reminded) once was one of the victims involved in a software failure that cost lives when their public transport crashed--for real.
Of course, soon invaders, led by the mysterious entity known as 3340, assault the Coronal, and Livia's off in search of help, which she eventually finds, after which she--well, you know.
Mr. Schroeder, since he never quite makes clear what is real and what is illusion (which may well be his point) is pretty much free to write his own rules as he goes along--since nothing is quite as it seems, anything can happen, and pretty much does.
Which brings us back to differing systems requiring different techs. That allows the author (or his publisher) to present this work as "hard" science fiction when it's nothing of the sort. For if you accept the notion that this melange of fascinating ideas and colliding interests is "hard" science fiction, you'll also have to concede that the "Alice" and the "Oz" books are, too.

Interesting but lacking.......2007-04-07
I greatly admire the writings of Rene Guenon, Schuon and Burckhard and was very impressed with the biography of the Prophet Muhammad by Martin Lings I do however feel that he like G Eaton lacks the same insight as the above mentioned 3 authors with regards to religion and society.
While Guenon and Schuon concentrate on a study of religion and its regression in the modern world, Burckhard and Nasr on the spiritual aspect of art and the world around us Lings and Eaton seem to look into the social and political climate of the time and here they are to say the least lacking.
This book is a perfect example. While its aim is noble and simple enough, that our ancestors had a much stronger concept of religion, through history we are moving more and more away from God and and even though doomsday theories have come and gone continuously throughout history they were more deeply felt in the past as people then were much 'closer to God'
Yes, we can argue against modern idiologies such as communism (as Lings and Eaton have done almsot to the point of a personal crusade) And argue that is is "The lowest ebb which a government can sink" In regards to its distance from religion and thus, distance from God but to then argue as Lings does on page 42 that "Franco re-established a principled autocracy. That is, a Christian kingdom with himself as regent, thus saving his country from a communist dictatorship" Shows a remarkable ignorance of Spanish history.
Lings may well produce a theory of the world regressing (in opposite to modern theories of progress which is in fact Guenon's theory) but to descrive Francos Spain as some kind of 'noble Christian kingdom' is just nonsense. The fact that he could even put such words to print shows something of an insult to the intelligence of the reader.
Much of the book then is just a reproduction of Guenon and Shuons works followed by the apparitions at Fatima and the Prophercy of the Popes (something which was recently revived with the comming of the current pope) While his interpretations of the prophecy of the Popes is interesting as are his notes on the apparitions at Fatima they realy cover nothing new. I must say, I was disappointed by this book because I thought it lacked depth.
For writing on the study of religion especially eastern religion look to the works of Guenon or Schuon. For the spiritual aspect of Islam look to Nasr (or Islam and the destiny of Man by Eaton) For writings on Christian art look to Burckhard.
I cant imagine that someone with an interest in such subjects will not have previously read the Prophercy of the Popes or about Fatima and the mere fact that he/she is reading such books show they are more than aware that there is a spiritual crisis in the world and within themselves. What they are looking for is what to do about it. This book I feel, does not give any answers.
The Eleventh Hour at the End of Time........2005-01-01
_The Eleventh Hour: The Spiritual Crisis of the Modern World in the Light of Tradition and Prophecy_ by traditionalist scholar and museum curator Martin Lings is a fascinating book which examines the crisis of the present age as we approach the "eleventh hour" and the end of time. Martin Lings examines the world's religious traditions including Hinduism, Buddhism, and the three great monotheistic religions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in terms of the perennial philosophy to understand the modern world and its plunge into darkness. From the Gospels, Lings examines the parable of the laborers in the vineyard - those who arrive at the eleventh hour receive the same wages as those who labor throughout the day. Lings also turns his attention to the errors of the modern world - which exists at the end of a cycle, the Kali yuga of the Hindus, the darkest of the dark ages - including especially Darwinism and evolution, scientism, and modern education. Lings examines modern day political structures in the light of Plato's writings in his misnamed _Republic_ as a progression occurs from aristocracy (rule by the elite, the philosopher kings), to timarchy (rule by the Kshatriya caste), to oligarchy (rule by the Vaisya merchant caste), to democracy (the call for "liberty and equality"), to eventual tyranny. This form of degradation is contrary to modern secular political thinking which trumpets democracy (with all its evils) as a great achievement of government. Lings compares this to the various forms of Islamic theocracy, but notes how the original pure form has been lost. Lings references various components within the religious traditions, particularly those of Islam and Roman Catholicism (where he notes the mistakes of the Second Vatican Council, the prophecies of the Virgin at Fatima, and the prophecies of Saint Malachy regarding the popes and the end of the world). Lings next turns his attention to the "Spirit of the Times" in which he notes the positive features of the modern era. Here, Lings references the Kalki, "the rider of the white horse", of the Hindu tradition and compares this figure to Christ in the Christian apocalypse. Lings is particularly influenced by the traditionalist school of thought founded by two important figures Rene Guenon and Ananda Coomaraswamy (who represent for him prophets calling to mind the apocalyptic accounts of Enoch and Elias). In addition, other traditionalists such as Fritjhof Schuon as well as Titus Burckhardt, Leo Schaya, and Rama Coomaraswamy (son of Ananda Coomaraswamy and writer on the errors of Vatican II and the Roman Catholic Church) are mentioned by Lings. Finally, Lings notes how a destructive force is underway which will result in a great tribulation on the Purification Day. Here, Lings references both Christian and Islamic traditions involving the apocalyptic figures of Christ, the Antichrist, and the Mahdi of Islamic tradition. Also, as revealed by the Virgin at Fatima the Cup of Divine Anger will overflow. The book ends with four appendices including one discussing Sufism in the light of Fritjhof Schuon's writings (cf. _Sufism: Veil and Quintessence_), one discussing the question of finding a spiritual master who will lead one in the path of esoterism, one discussing the Second Vatican Council in the light of the Virgin's prophecies at Fatima and Garabandal, and one discussing the prophecies of Saint Malachy regarding the future popes and the end of the world. This book offers an excellent resource into the thinking of the traditionalist philosophy and provides a necessary antidote to the spiritual degradation of our times.
