Really nice book.......2007-07-31
I got this book for my life drawing class and I really like this book. It does not teach anatomy or proportion. It shows the classical way of doing figure drawing and how to do finish rendering. It's more traditional approach and really helpful. I have learned a lot from it.
Good for drawing "live".......2006-07-17
Very usefull, very pleasant to read. I was expecting more explanations about the relationship between anatomy and the human pose, but it's more about how to look at the model to draw it well.
Thank God for an excellent figurative painter!.......2006-03-04
Ryder's book is a delight to leaf through, looking at the excellent life drawings in red earth, done with the same accuracy and passion as the masters of the past.
He gives a very clear account of how to tackle the drawing in phases, until it is finished.
I would have rated the book a solid 5, were it not that in my opinion Ryder spends too little time giving advice on how to measure proportions, which are the basis of a successful life drawing or portrait. He is undoubtedly a masterful draftsman, but the less experienced artist reading his book would expect to be led step by step on such an important aspect of drawing from life.
Excellent, but..........2005-11-05
The general consensus of the reviews I've read is that this is a fine book, but not for beginners. My take is somewhat different.
First of all, I think this is a fine book for a beginner if she or he is not (unlike most beginners it seems) indignant at the idea of having to have exercise patience and concentration.
Anthony Ryder is a fine draftsman and, to judge from this book, a fine teacher as well. He explains his method quite admirably. How others can think otherwise is a mystery to me. As far as I'm concerned, he does an excellent job of combining instruction in mechanical technique with broader insights into the process of drawing. While I have never met him, I find he comes across in this book as quite a likeable person.
I do, however, have a reservation. The author seems to have little understanding of, or at least does not convey, the limitations of the method he teaches.
For accurately conveying the appearance of still subjects in controlled lighting, I think this method is without better.
Many subjects, however, cannot be portrayed accurately using this method. You simply cannot make a good drawing of a living deer or chickadee, for instance, using this framework. Nor can you portray human subjects that are impractical for studio sessions, for instance a battle scene with many people (try paying just one model for 8 hours of posing) and in positions that no model can hold for very long or at all. All the work of A.R. that I have seen is either of inanimate objects or of human models in relatively leisurely poses, and his method reflects that.
Nonetheless, learning to draw accurately from still life is an essential skill for those who want to do realistic work, and this book is an excellent foundation. However, if you want to work with subjects other than lounging models and objects on table tops, you will need to go beyond it.
Figure Drawing.......2005-08-12
Mr. Ryder has compiled wonderful book for the figure drawing beginer that includes many types of drawings and drawing media, from pencil to charcoal to pastels. It is extremely well ilustrated with many great tips for the beginers. This is a book that I highly recomend for those just starting to those are already on their way.

Excellent for young budding artists.......2006-08-25
I got this for my sons 9th Birthday - it give the basics of 3D drawing in a way that children of his age can understand. I would recommend this book to people with children who enjoy drawing and would like to improve the results
Good book to learn how to draw.......2005-09-26
I'm trying to learn how to draw now because I was afraid to take art classes in high school. This book has made it fun. I really liked the "how to draw cars" by the same author. This book was not as helpful but it is still a good book.
Thank Heavens for Dubosque.......2005-09-13
With 8 grandchildren under 10 years of age, this book has delighted all of them. We have 3 budding artists and now the others are becoming more creative. The Dubosque books are an answer to parents who are not artistic or don't have the time to answer all their questions. With our schools eliminating many arts programs it will be up to parents to interest their children in the finer things, which begin with the basics.
Thank you for a delightful, useful book.

Ideal for Pre-Teen and Beginning Artists.......2003-01-21
"DRAW 3-D" by Doug DuBosque is a friendly and painless introduction to the ABCs of perspective drawing. The text has a conversational feel and is easy to understand, using short words and simple explanations aided by 2-5 very clear illustrations (and an occasional photograph) on every single page.
I went through the whole book, practice-drawing as I read, in about a week, since it's only 63 pages and I was already familiar with some of the principles discussed thanks to the most excellent "How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way" by John Buscema & Stan Lee.
I think "DRAW 3-D" is easy enough for a kid of about 9 or older to understand most of it, and all of it if he or she has an older artist handy to explain and demonstrate (or to console and encourage, because it sure is exasperating when you forget which of those 20 straight lines goes where). It will not teach you to draw a perspective view from an object plan, or to draw a perfect square in perspective, but if you are completely new to perspective drawing and want a good introduction to the subject, this is the book for you.
Try it! If you reach the point where you don't need it anymore, and haven't become sentimentally attached to it in the meantime, it will make a great gift for anyone else interested in drawing.
Splendid!.......1999-09-24
I bought three beginning drawing books for my 9 year old, and this one was his favorite (one on how to draw cartoons was a close second). The first exercise, which is to spell out your name using 3-D letters, caught his interest right away, and he's been back to the book several times on his own initiative.

excellent information, practical illustrations, I use it teach basic perspective in college drawing class
Book Description
This classic study of perspective is an absolute must for any serious students of design, benefiting amateurs and professionals alike. Dozens of examples are illustrated, including parallel, angular, and oblique perspectives, as well as ascending and descending planes. Other images show how to create a “cone of rays,” and add depth and realism to curved objects. The techniques can be used for laying out a garden, predicting the shadow effects of a tall building, and accurately capturing the interplay of angles, light, and shadow.

Perspective Made Easy
ASIN: 1581808550 |
Book Description
Everything you need to know to put your drawings and paintings into perspective!
If the concept of perspective makes you think of confusing angles, fancy measuring gadgets and complicated theories, get ready for a very pleasant surprise. In this comprehensive guide, Phil Metzger demystifies perspective, presenting it simply as a matter of mimicking the way we see--like the way a distant mountain appears blue, or a road seems to narrow in the distance. The Art of Perspective offers simple but powerful techniques for achieving a convincing illusion of depth and distance, whether it's a few inches in a still life or miles in a landscape.
- Start simple, with atmospheric perspective and intuitive techniques, and gradually progress to linear perspective and more complex challenges such as stairways, curves and reflections.
- Use the engaging, step-by-step demonstrations and exercises to try out each essential concept for yourself, making lessons clearer and more memorable.
- Learn theories that apply to all mediums, with specific advice for achieving effects using acrylic, oil, watercolor and pencil.
- Get the inside scoop on professional tricks and shorcuts that make perspective easier than ever!
Forget everything you think you know (or don't know) about perspective. This book builds an easy-to-follow, ground-up understanding of how to turn a flat painting or drawing surface into a living, breathing, dimensional scene that lures viewers in. No matter how you look at it, it's the ultimate guide to perspective for artists of every medium and skill level.

Awesome!.......2007-04-22
This book is full of great tips. It has hundreds of various poses and positions that can defintely help in the long run. It shows the creases in certain skirts and tops and also covers swimsuits, such as one and two-pieces. It even shows the styles from way back in ancient times with the Eqyptians and their swimsuits!
It is a great reference book for poses. There are not step-by-step instructions, but it is definetly worth the time and money. It's a definte keep on my How To Draw shelf.
A good book.......2006-11-28
Trust me when I say, some of the titles can be very misleading. Fortunately, this book was not misleading at all. This book has what the title suggests, sport wear. In the book, it shows you a variety of sport wear that characters wear in their active lifestyles. Not only does it have sporty wear, but they also managed to sneak in some fantasy style clothing as well as cheerleading outfits in there as well. This book has a good bit of poses that would be very useful, and it shows how the body would look in certain outfits. If you are looking for a book that helps you come up with some cute and sporty ideas for a sport genre manga then this is definately a must buy! Also, there is very, I mean very little nudity in this book, so I would also recommend this book for those who are offended by nudity.
Lousy name, but inspiring designs.......2005-09-30
I was a little skeptical when I first saw the cover of this book, not to mention the title of this book. I think they titled it that so men would be drawn to it and buy it. But I must say this book is actually pretty good. It has some really creative ideas when it comes to fashion designs. You can also use the ideas to not only make sports wear, but anything your imagination can come up with. You could design simple bathing suits to active sports wear to even a hero's outfit or even yet a cool space suit. With this book you can even design a fashion that best suites a unique characters personality, that could have nothing to do with sports, the book is fantastically inspiring.
The only down fall is its awfully weak when it comes to men's. Not that very many men will have sexy sports wear, but neither the first or second Costume Encyclopedias have much of anything for the men. The whole How To Draw Manga series kind of left in the dark when it comes to men. They have one book for Male Characters and five for Female Characters.
Yet, this book is worth buying. But if you don't have the first Costume Encyclopedia, get that one first and skip over the second one.
Book Description
Carried in 700 papers worldwide, including the Washington Post, the New York Daily News, the Miami Herald, and the Tokyo Times, Close to Home has devout fans that range from elementary students to octogenarians. As one fan put it, "I feel like you have been looking in my window and are drawing my life!" Though by no means a Peeping Tom, John McPherson does have the unique skill of being able to take those idiosyncrasies of daily life that drive us all nuts and infuse them with razor-sharp wit. With an award-winning line of greeting cards, a top-selling block calendar, and a line of clothing, Close to Home continues to gain momentum among readers.
In this latest collection John features angry letters from readers, cartoons that were killed by the editor, a glimpse inside his creative process, and never-before-seen photos of his erasers, quill pens, and his lucky drawing slippers. Who could resist it?
Customer Reviews:
Lots of Laughs!.......2006-11-12
I really enjoy John McPherson's humor! He has a great talent for turning common, everyday events and topics into hilarious comedies! I started reading his early comics that were published in Campus Life magazine and have been an avid reader ever since.
Awesome.......2006-02-23
If you are a Close to Home fan you can not go wrong with this book. I LOVED the mamogram one!
Book Description
nother outrageous bet sends Tony Hawks on a travel adventure in an attempt to beat the members of the Moldovan soccer team at tennis. During this hilarious journey, he is taken in by gypsies, narrowly escapes a kidnapping attempt, and smuggles his way onto the Moldovan National Team train. And with the loser of the bet agreeing to strip naked and sing the Moldovan national anthem, this book is just too good to resist.

Why Playing the Moldovans at Tennis actually works.......2007-09-02
As a die-harder on CIS traveling, I do my best in ready every travelouge written on the former Soviet republics - some works, some do not work and some are great. Tony Hawks book is - against all odds - in the 2nd category.
The reason why Hawks has the odds against him for writing a travelouge that works (and under no circumstances is capable of writing a great travelouge) is that is simply doesn't have a clue about Moldova. As anyone that succedes with making a living out of something he doesn't have a clue about, he does not try to behave like he is an expert, he chooses a subject most other people don't have a clue about either and of course it does not hurt that he has a great humour and a lot of good spirit.
As a consequence of his approach though, the book is probably more interesting AFTER you have visited Moldova (or as entertainment for you that have no intention what so ever to go there - a marketsegment I suspect to be much bigger) than as preperation before you go.
2 other CIS travelogues come to my mind after reading Playing the Moldovans at tennis. Hennighan's Lost Province and Bissel's Chasing the Sea. Hennighan does not work, Bissel has written a great travelouge. The reason why Hennighan's book does not work is that as he as Hawks does not have a clue about Moldova nad the CIS, totally lacks the humour and - more important - the self irony and conciousnes about his own ignorance that it takes to write a good travelogue from this startingpoint. It should be stated that if you can live with the anoyments this creates, Hennighans book is quite worthwhile as the period of time he spends in Moldova, the fact that he speaks the language and the fact that he works there, give insights that Hawk's book can not provide. The reason why his travelouge is not great as Bissel's, is exactly because he does not even try to get a clue about the subject before he started writing. One can very well argue though that Hawk never intended to write a travelouge in this tradidtional sense.
Funny book - good observations!
Tony Hawks does it again.......2007-05-26
I really enjoy Tony's humor, the way he writes and the fact that he actually goes through with his totally wild bets. A fun read!
Read the book in the country - a hilarious account!.......2005-11-20
Having just traveled through Moldova on a cycling trip through Eastern Europe, I was fortunate enough to have the chance to read this whilst staying at the one and only hostel in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova.
Tony's bet and ensuing journey make for laugh-out-loud, can't put it down reading. The funniest part it, having seen the country first hand, how remarkably accurate his circumstances and plights are - and similar to many situations I found myself in (though I didn't actually play any tennis whilst there).
The fact Tony takes the bet so seriously and ends up traveling to Israel to complete it speaks volumes for Tony's determination to stick to his guns. His writing, whilst entirely amusing, always is serious and reflective in parts, and balances the entire novel out. There is no question that Tony's travels to Moldova change him as he learns and experiences a part of the world so little know about.
This is a great read for anyone who plans to go or who has been to Moldova, to look back and laugh tongue-in-cheek at the wonderful way of life these people live - or to make you more excited to visit this country totally void of tourists. And if you get the chance to visit Transdnistria - do so - it is one of the single most amazing places in the world...
Tony - 5 stars mate - keep up the great writing; I look forward to your next novel: Across Antarctica with a Pogo Stick.
And if you are looking for that hostel, go to 'marisha dot net'.
good preparation for a visit to Moldova.......2005-11-13
Without this book - I would surely have fallen down a manhole! As soon as I finished reading I added a head torch to my equipment list! I knew I was about to visit for 6 months and found the book fantastic preparation - whilst also being gut-wrenchingly funny. I have a massive collection of photographs of open manholes if anyone wants proof of the authenticity of this particular aspect of life in Moldova.
Tony - if you are about to revisit - I'm missing my tennis and you'll find me in Transdnistria - if you dare!
A BRILLIANT BOOK WHICH i HAVE NOW READ ABOUT 4 TIMES
Laugh out loud funny.......2005-07-18
Having met a Moldovan at work and realising I knew nothing of the place, I typed in Moldova into Amazon's search engine and found this book.
Very, very clever writing made for laugh out loud comical situations.
Now I'll have to order his first book!
