Book Description

A short, powerful new novel by one of the greatest writers in the German language

On a Dark Night I Left My Silent House is Peter Handke's evocative, moving, often fantastic, novel about one man's conflict with himself and his journey toward resolution. During one night shift, an unnamed, middle-aged pharmacist in Taxham, an isolated suburb of Salzburg, tells his story to a narrator. The pharmacist is known and well-respected, but lonely and estranged from his wife. He feels most comfortable wandering about in nature, collecting and eating hallucinogenic mushrooms. One day he receives a blow to the head that leaves him unable to speak, and the narrative is transformed from ironic description into a collection of sensual impressions, observations and reflections. The pharmacist, who is now called the driver, sets out on a quest, travelling into the Alps with two companions--a former Olympic skiing champion and a formerly famous poet--where he is beaten and later stalked by a woman. He drives through a tunnel and has a premonition of death, then finds himself in a surreal, foreign land. In a final series of bizarre, cathartic events, the driver regains his speech and is taken back to his pharmacy--back to his former life, but forever changed. A powerful, poetic exploration of language, longing and dislocation in the human experience, On a Dark Night I Left My Silent House reveals Handke at his magical best.

5 out of 5 stars Isolation Examined.......2000-12-31

This was a fantastic, albeit somewhat depressing, book. I agree with the other reviewers here. But I would add that the book is a moving exploration of man's ultimate and inherent isolation.

5 out of 5 stars Handke's Characteristic Alchemy.......2000-12-04

The editorial review here is pretty accurate, insofar as summations can ever do justice to a Handke novel, which rely little on plot or human characterization for their power. The novel really takes off when Handke puts his protagonist on the "steppes"--which turn out to be the plains of north-central Spain--and has him explore and experience himself in nature. Readers who liked "My Year in the No-Man's Bay" of "Weight of the World" will like this; here are long passages equally evocative and magical. Undoubtedly there are significances here that literati will find resonant, and perhaps metaphorical parallels that students of European politics will identify, but as an exploration into consciousness, into human interactions with nature and time and memory, this small novel delivers an experience that is very satisfying indeed.

Louise Erdrich's The Master Butchers Singing Club is a powerfully told story of love, death, redemption, and resurrection. After German soldier Fidelis Waldvogel returns home from World War I to marry his best friend's pregnant widow, he packs up his father's butcher knives and sets sail for America. He settles in Argus, North Dakota, where he sets up a meat shop with his wife Eva, who quickly befriends the struggling yet resourceful Delphine Watzka. Delphine, who runs a vaudeville show with her balancing partner Cyprian Lazarre, has returned home to Argus to care for her alcoholic father. While most of this emotionally rich novel focuses on the changing landscape of small-town life as seen through Delphine and Fidelis's eyes, Erdrich does a masterful job of illuminating hidden dramas through her secondary characters. Erdrich's portrayal of these various townsfolk, including members of the Master Butchers Singing Club, truly shows off her storytelling talent. Her ability to infuse each character with a distinct and multifaceted personality makes this novel an intimate and thought-provoking adventure. --Gisele Toueg

5 out of 5 stars A Continually Surprising Treat for Good Listening or Reading.......2007-09-18

Seldom has a novel surprised me in as many ways as The Master Butchers Singing Club did. Be careful that you don't read any spoilers: Those plot details could neutralize at lot of the pleasures you'll receive from the book. One of my favorite reference librarians told me that this was a book not to be missed, and she was right!

If you like to listen to books being read, I highly recommend the unabridged cassette version that the author, Louise Erdrich, reads. Ms. Erdrich has a wonderful way of bringing her vivid book to life through her pauses and emphasis that adds nuance to the story. Although her voice isn't commanding, her quiet tones rang deeply inside me. The experience was like hearing my aunts tell a story about their German-American in-laws during the Depression and World War II.

The book has so much to recommend it that it's hard to focus on just a few areas. Those who love multigenerational family sagas will be pleased to see that the book has that quality. Those who appreciate novels with a strong sense of place will find themselves delving deeply into the ins and outs of Argus, North Dakota. People who like to read about overcoming hardship and loss will love this book. Readers who dislike being able to anticipate what comes next will be continually fascinated by the plot's many unexpected twists and turns, especially in the beginning. For people like me who love character development, the book offers a full development of not only the main characters . . . but also many of the secondary characters. Those who love novels that deeply explore a few themes will be fascinated by Ms. Erdrich's take on the rewards of doing one's duty and her suggestions about the meaning of life.

The book begins with a story not unlike Gunter Grass tells in Peeling the Onion about his experiences near the end of World War I. With difficulty, German sniper Fidelis Waldvogel makes his way home after the armistice to keep a promise to his best friend, to marry his dead friend's fiancée, Eva Kalb, and to be a good father to the child she is carrying. From their marriage, Fidelis learns that he is better at loving than at killing, even though he has done much killing in the war and as a butcher.

Fascinated by a slice of machine-made bread from America, Fidelis decides he must live where people do such things. Taking only his butcher's knives, his father's sausage recipe, a suitcase full of sausages to sell for his passage, and his beautiful singing voice, Fidelis heads for Seattle . . . only to end up in Argus, North Dakota where his sausages and money run out. Eventually, he reunited there with his wife and child.

Next, we meet Delphine Watzka, a native of Argus, who is touring in a variety act with Cyprian, a balancing whiz, whose male beauty attracts her. When she tires of providing her stomach as the foundation for his gymnastics, they return to Argus where she finds her alcoholic father, Roy, in a terrible state. The two pitch in to take care of Roy and clean up his horrible messes.

From there, the lives of Fidelis and Delphine begin to interact as Eva hires Delphine to help with the butcher's shop and household chores. You'll also meet the men who join Fidelis in his singing club.

The book has more than its share of heroes, heroines, and villains. They make nice contrasts with one another.

When you finish this book, I hope you'll think about where doing your duty can bring unexpected rewards and satisfactions.

5 out of 5 stars Depth of Emotions.......2007-09-14

Excellent read, rich characters, intriguing plot. After WW I, immigrents to the US find their way to ND and struggle to succeed in a small town. The characters are woven together in such a unique way, the reader is kept moving along, intensly engaged in their lives and emotions as if they are family members. The authors' unusual plot twists and steadfast characters make this an interesting and captivating read.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful. Close to perfect........2007-08-02

This is a wonderful tapestry of fascinating quirky characters. The descriptions of surroundings are like a painting without every being tedious. I loved this book. The only disappointing thing was that no one ever gets to be happy in this book -- well maybe the love between Fidelis & Eva comes close. Since life is made of real joy, as well as sadness, after a while the constant disappointment seems contrived. BUT that is a small small complaint. I really love these oddball complex characters. I think this one will stay with me a while.

5 out of 5 stars A Tapestry of Tragedy and Joy ........2007-07-19

Like a wonderful song in a minor key, Erdrich tells just how it was when life was simpler and darker. She never falters in her need to shock you and soothe you and shock you again. I loved it from cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing Read.......2007-04-19

Louise Erdrich has been a favorite author of mine for many years and this book is no exception. After reading the first sentence you are immediately drawn into a tale full of the joys and sorrows that make up human existence. The book is beautifully crafted, the narrative rich and the characters absorbing. I highly recommend every project Ms. Erdrich has had a hand in from her novels to her poetry, she is a master wordsmith and storyteller.

My thought of the secret is that is greatly written not over dramatic and it does not take along time to get into the action of the book it was good i am at the part where they are just about to turn into the termites in sneak into the yeerks loging camp to me my favroite charcter is tobias. This book is a good book to any one that likes the series it would also be good for anyone just beging to read but around the age of six.The suspense of the book is great they put in just enough not to much not to little.

Usually I don't like the Cassie books as much(except for #19)- but this one was great! From begining to end this one is great.

My only problem with it is that everything seemsto fall in to place perfectly sometimes with the Animorphs.

2 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2003-06-20

This book is not so good. Why did they have to do the skunk stuff? And the termite thing was weird. This is the only ANIMORPHS book I don't like.

5 out of 5 stars Reader Over 25.......2002-09-08

For some reason this may be showing up under Making Waves by K.A. Applegate, but if it is, please note it goes to Animorphs #9: The Secret by the same author.

There are already several good reviews up with a synapsis of this book which will tell you exactly what the story/plot is. As always, I suggest people refer to these first, and I'm reviewing the Animorphs series from another angle (let's face it, I'm over double the target age of the series.) However, if there's any other adults out there who have kids who want to read these, or someone is curious what they're like from an older standpoint, these reviews are specifically for you.

This particular book was very heavy on making the reader think about several aspects over high intensive action. There were some great pulse pounding scenes, such as near capture, and when termite bodies took full control, making the characters little more than automatons. There was also a great deal of humor in it, particularly in the end when the Andalite Controller we all love to hate "gets his." Up to this point, the author has balanced the story a bit more with other elements instead of going quite so heavy on the side of heavy hitting questions about life, death, and what is right or wrong. I get the feeling from the other reviews that Cassie often isn't one of the favorites because she's the deep thinker. That's what actually makes her critical to the team, because she's much faster to pick up the real motives behind what people do on an emotional level. Marco is also sharp, but tends to be more of the long term thinker instead of seeing through people (or aliens in Ax's case). The very stuff which makes Cassie up becomes very apparent in this book, and although I liked it, I can see how it could become tedious to the 9-12 year old group. Cassie poses a lot of serious questions in this one, and becomes a mother skunk to save a litter of kits. Her love of life, all life, is very deep and the skunk was wounded because of an Animorph's battle when a stray Dracon beam hit her. She's angry at Tobias at eating one or more of the litter, yet she knows he has every right to live, too, as a hawk. Where is the right and wrong of it? When they infiltrate the termite hive and end up destroying the Queen to save themselves, Cassie is torn on the knowledge that they invaded a "world" which wasn't their own, and literally destroyed it. Was she, then, no different than the Yeerks? What measures become necessary in their war, and when do they know when to quit? Most of the questions don't have answers, but they are also the kinds of questions humanity has asked in the past, and will continue to ponder (hence should/will continue to be asked.) If there's a moral to that thread, it's much the same as The Stranger. It comes down to simply you do what you have to and the best you can. It could make an interesting book for discussion in a paper for school or something along those lines, but overall somewhat intense.

Ultimate Healing shows us that by transforming our minds, especially through the development of compassion, we can eliminate the ultimate cause of all disease. In addition to relating stories of people who have recovered from disease through meditation, Lama Zopa presents practical healing meditations, including white-light healing, compassion meditation, "taking and giving," and techniques to cure depression. Ultimate Healing shows that by opening up to the truths of impermanence, interdependence, and the suffering of others, we can heal our bodies, our lives, and the world around us.

For the convenience of those who are new to Medicine Buddha, below is a brief extract of the wonderful benenfits and mantra.

Buddha spoke of the original vows of the Great Medicine Buddha in the excerpt of The Sutra of the Master of Healing as follows :-

The first vow. `I vow that, after my reincarnation and having attained unexcelled complete Enlightenment, my body should be shining like a brilliant light, throwing beams on infinite, and boundless, worlds, adorned with a retinue of thirty-two forms of the Great Men and with eighty physical characteristics of the Buddha, I shall make all beings wholly equal to me.'

The second vow. `I vow that, after my reincarnation and having attained Perfect Enlightenment, my body should be like a crystal in spotless purity both within and without, with splendorous radiant light, in the majesty of its virtue, sitting serenely, adorned with the aureole, brighter than the sun and the moon, I shall reveal my great power to all the beings in obscurity, in order that they may act freely according to their bent.'

The third vow. `I vow that, after my reincarnation and having attained Perfect Enlightenment, I should grant by means of boundless wisdom, to all beings the inexhaustible things that they may need and that they may be free from any want.'

The fourth vow. `I vow that, after my reincarnation and having attained Perfect enlightenment, I should bring those who have gone the heterodox ways to dwell tranquilly in the way of Bodhi; and those who travel on the Vehicle of the Sramana and the Pratyekabuddha on the Vehicle of the Sramana and the Pratyekabuddha to stand firmly in the Great Vehicle of Bodhisattva.'

The fifth vow. `I vow that, after my reincarnation and having attained Perfect Enlightenment, I should enable the innumerable beings to observe all the moral laws to mend their ways to pure living, and to obey the three cumulative commandments. Should there be any relapse, or violation, they shall again become pure once they hear of my name, then they shall not fall into evil existences.'

The sixth vow. 'I vow that, after my reincarnation and having attained Perfect Enlightenment, those beings who are physically inferior, with imperfect senses, such as, the ugly, stupid, blind, deaf, mute, crippled, paralysed, hump-backed, leprous, lunatic, or sick in many respects, shall all of them, when they hear my name, regain their normal appearances and become intelligent. All their senses shall be perfectly restored, and they shall not suffer from diseases.'

The seventh vow. 'I vow that, after my reincarnation and having attained Perfect Enlightenment, those who are tormented by diseases, who have nobody to whom they can seek for help, without a refuge, without a doctor, without medicine, without relatives, without a home; these poor and miserable beings shall all of them be free from diseases and troubles, and shall enjoy perfect health of body and mind, once my name reaches their ears. They shall have families, friends and properties a-plenty, and shall all be brought to the supreme Enlightenment of Buddha.'

The eighth vow. 'I vow that, after my reincarnation and having attained Perfect Enlightenment, women who are tormented by the hundred of sufferings of the female sex, who are much wearied of life and long to make bodily sacrifice, shall all of them, when they hear my name, be transformed into men instead of women, in the next re-birth, they shall get the form of manhood and shall in the end attain the supreme Enlightenment of Buddha.'

The ninth vow. 'I vow that, after my reincarnation and having attained Perfect Enlightenment, I should let all being to escape the evil nets of Mara, to be free from other non-Buddhist cults. If they should have fallen into the dense forest of false doctrines, I should assist and lead them to the noble truths, and gradually induce them to lead the life of a Bodhisattva and soon they shall attain supreme Enlightenment of Buddha.'

The tenth vow. 'I vow that, after my reincarnation and having attained Perfect Enlightenment, I should bring it to pass that all those who are recorded and condemned by the royal law to be bound and whipped, to be enchained in prisons, to be sentenced to capital punishment, too meet numerous other disasters and insult, to be afflicted with sorrow and anguish, to be troubled both in body and in mind, shall, when they hear of my name, escape evil kalpas through the awe-inspiring majesty of my blessedness and virtue.'

The eleventh vow. 'I vow that, after my reincarnation and having attained Perfect Enlightenment, I should bring it to pass that all beings who are tormented by hunger and thirst and who, in order to obtain drink and food, if they can carefully remember my name and cherish it, then I should let them taste the flavour of the Dharma, and eventually lead a tranquil and happy life.'

The twelfth vow. 'I vow that, after my reincarnation and having attained Perfect Enlightenment, all beings who are poor and naked, tormented day and night by mosquitoes and wasps, by cold and heat, when they hear my name and carefully remember and cherish it, shall receive the wonderful garments of all kinds, as well as valuable ornaments, chaplets of fragrant flower; and various kinds of instrumental music shall resound. Whatever they dream of, they shall have in abundance.'

                    ...

"Then, Manjushri, when the Master of Healing, Azure Radiance Tathagata, had attained perfect Enlightenment, to become the Buddha of Medicine, he saw by virtue of his vows, that the beings were suffering from all sorts of diseases, such as tuberculosis, bilious fever, or that they were affected by a spell or by poison, or that some were by their nature short-lived, or that some have died a violent death. He wish to fulfil all their desires by putting an end to all these diseases and miseries. Therefore the World's Most Venerable entered into a Samadhi called the Removal of Suffering for All Beings. While He was in this contemplation a great radiance of light of light was sent forth from his Ushnisa, and he pronounced the great Dharani as follows:

                    "NAMO BHAGAVATE BHAISAJAYA-GURU-VAIDURYA-PRABHA-RAJAYA
                    TATHAGATAYA ARHATE SAMYAKSAMBUDDHAYA TADYATHA OM
                    BHAISAJYE BHAISAJYE BHAISAJYA SAMUDGATE SVAHA"

When He, in his radiance, had spoken this mystical formula, the earth was shaken and emitted a great light. All beings were delivered from their diseases and miseries, they are now happy because their bodies and minds are at rest.

"Manjushri, if you see a pious man or woman who suffers from a disease, you shall do the following whole-heartedly for those sick people: let them keep clean by taking frequently baths and rinse their mouths, give them food, medicine and clean water, and recite the Dharani for a hundred and eight times, then all diseases will disappear entirely. When one of them has a particular wish, he shall concentrate and recite the magic formula. Then he will fulfil all he wishes, he will be without disease, and will live longer. After his death, he will born in paradise without having to return to this world, and will in the end attain perfect Enlightenment. Therefore, Manjushri, if there is a pious man or woman who very seriously prays to the Buddha of Medicine and, he or she must always keep in mind this magic formula and never forget it."

                    End of Excerpt.

                    May all be liberated!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful book of healing stories, practices and attitudes.......2004-07-26

This lovely book was written by Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the heart disciple of Lama Yeshe. Those who are familiar with Tibetan Buddhism will know of Lama Yeshe as a truly remarkable man, one of the first lamas to teach Buddhism to Western students, and founder of FPMT, an excellent organization for the promotion of Mahayana Buddhism to bring health and happiness to people around the world. Lama Yeshe's books are full of love, compassion and wisdom, and Lama Zopa Rinpoche follows in his teacher's footsteps with this remarkable volume.

The books title is "Ultimate Healing", and I suppose this title is very suitable, because while the book concentrates on healing of the body, and includes remarkable cases of individuals being healed from cancer, AIDS, and other illnesses and maladies, Lama Zopa Rinpoche places this all within the broader context of healing the spirit/mind. As even Western science is proving now to be true, the mind is incredibly powerful in bringing about healing. Yet we must understand by the word "mind" something much larger than is usually meant in English -- in Buddhism the "mind" is "that which experiences". In other words, our entire subjectivity. Since everything we experience is done so through this mind/subjectivity, learning to control it effectively means learning to control our whole experience. That would mean being able to effect a state of lasting happiness, with a complete cessation of suffering. Now, that's real ultimate healing!!

Along with inspiring stories, Lama Zopa Rinpoche presents the effective methods that enable one to bring about this ultimate healing. Specifically, there is a long chapter on the Medicine Buddha practice -- a lovely practice for healing and well-being that can be used for oneself or others. It involves some visualization and mantra recitation. Again, such techniques may seem strange to those unfamiliar with Eastern religions, but they have been proved effective in medical contexts. Even if the illness is not totally removed (and it may be), a person's degree of suffering can certainly be lessened. There are additional chapters on blessing water, the benefits of creating good karma by acts of kindness (such as freeing animals who are about to be killed), how to deal with depression, etc.

Even among the many great books on healing and Buddhism out there, this one is truly a gem, and I am sure it will bring great benefit to many people who read it. Advanced students of Buddhism and those who know nothing about Buddhism or the healing arts -- all can gain and be inspired by this treasure trove.

May you be healthy, and bring all those you love to a state of perfect health and happiness as well!

5 out of 5 stars PERHAPS THE BEST HEALING BOOK IN EXISTENCE!!!.......2001-09-27

...for paranoid schizophrenia, depression, cancer, and AIDS.
The author is a famous and extremely beloved lama in Tibetan
Buddhism. Tibetan Buddhism is a "touchy" subject once we go
past our common agreement that the Dalai Lama is a "nice guy."
In the Dali Lama's tradition, there are lower rebirths in which
one may be in hell for millions of years. And in which a human rebirth is considered rare. The author will talk about "spirit
harm". This tradition also believes, like Hinduism and Christianity, in spirit possession. Once we try to understand
these concepts with an Einsteinian view as opposed to a
Newtonian one of seperate objects existing within and by themselves, we can then set the preliminaries to a new kind of
healing. The author provides remedies, but not certain cures,
for anything crummy that might happen to you. And since this
tradition (Gelukpa) is not supposed to lie, I would believe the
claims that he makes. This is the one book that I would want by my bedside if I were dying of AIDS. By doing a very advanced but simple practice called "tonglen", one can transmute
one's own disease into one of helping all beings everywhere.
And ironically enough, this seems to be the best cure for
seemingly fatal and hopeless diseases! The author states that
there has only been one recorded recovery from AIDS through
meditation, but I believe that this may increase as we study
Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan Medicine more closely. Perhaps you will only be able to accept these cures when you let down
our view of a "skin-encapsulated" ego and invite a vision
of an interconnected world. Otherwise, most of this beautiful and wonderful content will be dismissed as superstition. If the reader can remain logical but not judgemental, he or she could find themselves not only healed, but even healthier and happier than before. Thank you and I wish you well.
