Olivia would be Eloise, if Eloise were a pig. She is good at singing 40 very loud songs and is very good at wearing people out. And scaring the living daylights out of her little brother, Ian, particularly when he copies her every move. She is also quite skilled at reproducing Jackson Pollock's "Autumn Rhythm #30" on the walls at home. When her mother tucks her in at night and says, "You know, you really wear me out. But I love you anyway," Olivia precociously pronounces, "I love you anyway too."

The New Yorker artist Ian Falconer's endearing charcoal portraits of his porcine heroine are spotted with fire-engine red gouache in all the right places--perhaps a tribute to Hilary Knight's red, pink, white, and black celebrations of Olivia's human counterpart? When she dresses up, the bow on her ears, her red lipstick, and her high-heeled shoes are all red. (The only time her shades-of-gray body is pink is when she is sunburned and the area where her bathing suit was is white!) Falconer does a fine job of letting the spare text set up the jokes for the visual punch lines--a dryly humorous interplay that adults will appreciate as much as children.

Preschoolers (and their parents) will see themselves in Olivia--a typical high-energy, over-the-top kid who likes the beach and Degas paintings, but hates naps. On the other hand, she combs her ears and is unusually gifted at sandcastle building. While we are certainly reminded of Eloise, Falconer's portrait is simpler in scope, less demented, and, as a result, less adult. Bottom line: precocious is fun, and we're tickled pink to have Olivia join the parade of, let's just say, individualistic youngsters. (Ages 4 to 8) --Karin Snelson

5 out of 5 stars We love Olivia!.......2007-09-18

This is one of my sons' favorite books. Olivia is a feisty, imaginative little pig who definitely keeps her mom on her toes. It's just a fun and funny little book, a must-have if you've got younger kids.

5 out of 5 stars Great read, illustrations and quality.......2007-07-17

Not only is it such a fun read for our little boy, but it's also has such cool illustrations. Introduction to the art of Degas and Pollack is such a plus, too! Everytime our son sees the paintings he mimicks either the dancer or the splashes of paint...it's so cool. PLUS, the hard pages are so solid. I just love it. It's pretty indestructable.

5 out of 5 stars Olivia is the best.......2007-05-12

Olivia has delighted my severe special needs students age 7-10...I can't describe the pleasure I get from watching them pour over this book when I am reading it to them...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story...a jewel for those with daughters.......2007-05-11

Anyone who's ever had a toddler...especially an active, inquisitive one can appreciate this story. In the literal sea of vividly colored children's books out there, Olivia stands out based on simplistic artwork, color choices, and it being a GREAT story.

Parents and children can relate to Olivia's antics...singing loudly, trying on everything in the closet, having a vivid imagination, painting on walls, etc., especially Olivia's mom saying "You know you really wear me out." And the fact that she is a spunky pig makes no difference.

I have enjoyed hours reading this book (and other Olivia books) to my daughter. It is short enough for a bedtime story but long enough to be complete. A good book all around.

We love all of the Olivia books. They are well written, well illustrated, and my kids love them.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

When it comes time to tell the class what she did on her vacation, Olivia isn't at all nervous. In fact, she remembers it quite clearly--she went to the circus, you see. "But when we got there, all the circus people were out sick with ear infections." What are the odds? But the show must go on! Fortunately, Olivia jumps right in to help out--riding elephants, posing as the Tattooed Lady (she draws on the pictures with a marker), taming lions, walking tightropes, juggling, clowning around, and more. In a marvelous fold-out, four-panel spread, our porcine heroine even reigns supreme as the Queen of the Trampoline. "And that's how I saved the circus. And now I am famous." Olivia looks proud. Her teacher looks mad. Ian Falconer shines in this dryly hilarious sequel to his 2001 Caldecott Honor Book Olivia. The charcoal and gouache illustrations perfectly capture Olivia's earnest expressions. Be prepared to be charmed anew! (Ages 4 to 8) --Karin Snelson

4 out of 5 stars Cute, but not my favorite Olivia tale.......2007-04-21

The first two pages are the best in "Olivia Saves the Circus." That aside, the basic story is that Olivia, during show-and-tell, "embellishes" her trip to the circus. The drawings are fabulous as usual, but the plotline is a little dry. Still, my daughter loves it because it does capture the spirit of Olivia, though the story is very one-dimensional compared to the other Olivia books. And check out Olivia's "Remember the Maine" tatoo - it's a hoot!

5 out of 5 stars My dad and I love this book!.......2007-04-20

The illustrations are very vivid. Ian Falconer can really think like a kid. A lot of times authors do that but its a little much.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-03-29

My daughter and I love reading Olivia books. The stories and the illustrations are great and very funny.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2007-03-11

This book, as the other Olivia books, is witty and creative. Unfortunately, the book is rendered worthless and inappropriate by the poor content. Olivia lies. Yes, all children enjoy fantasy, but when she's directly asked for the truth, she lies. Again, most kids will try that at least once. But for Olivia, there are no consequenses. What an awful message for children.
It gets worse. She shows a very negative attitude about her "boring uniform" that she has to wear to school. What a brat. And at the end she intentionally defies her mother, and of course, no consequenses. Blech. It's worthless, which is too bad because this author definately has talent.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as hoped.......2007-01-16

LOVED Olivia and the Missing Toy, wished I'd read Olivia Saves the Circus in a bookstore because I wouldn't have bought it. Very disappointed.

Book Description:
Everyone's favorite Caldecott Honor-winning porcine diva is back and with fanfare! There are going to be fireworks tonight, and Olivia can hardly wait to hear the band. But when she finds out that there isn't going to be a band, she can't understand why not. How can there be fireworks without a band?! And so Olivia sets to putting a band together herself... all by herself. Using pots, pans, her brother's toys, and even her father's suspenders, Olivia forms a band spectacular enough to startle any audience. Lavishly brought to life in Ian Falconer's signature style, and introducing an eye-catching shade of blue, here is Olivia doing what Olivia does best--making noise

Exclusive Art from Ian Falconer's Olivia Forms a Band

Why wasn't this picture included in the book? Here's a look inside the creation of a blockbuster picture book.

There were 60 images selected for Olivia Forms a Band out of over 70 pieces of art submitted by Olivia creator Ian Falconer. Sixty images may sound like a lot, but many pages are filled with multiple depictions of our porcine heroine. For instance, when you look at the page where Olivia is removing Daddy's suspenders, this page has nine separate drawings. On the other hand, the glorious fireworks scenes are all composed of one piece of art per page.

For this particular image of Olivia provided exclusively for Amazon.com customers, Falconer didn't feel like this artwork captured Olivia's true character. However, many people in-house at Simon & Schuster loved the picture and thought it was typical of a 5-year-old playing with her mother's lipstick. While there's a lot to love in this picture, Ian Falconer after all is the man behind Olivia. He knows better than anyone what makes something up to "Olivia standards." Sometimes that is as simple as being able to know which image works best for a particular moment in the book. In this instance Falconer felt the drawings that were used in the final book served the scene better, and with that this one was left on the cutting room floor.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!!.......2003-03-05

Delayed Diagnosis was a great book. I has all the things a great novel should have, mystery, romance, suspense, and an interesting set of characters. I especially liked the main character. This book takes wild twists and turns that will leave you wanting to read more to find out what happens, guarenteed!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-09-01

This book is full of suspense with some humor. It keeps you guessing but entertained throughout. Gwen Hunter is an excellent author always in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Think Kinsey Millhone with a scalpel!.......2002-06-09

I *like* plucky female heroines. I am especially fond of Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone because any woman who has the cujones to cut her hair with cuticle scissors is my kind of gal!

After reading DELAYED DIAGNOSIS by new writer Gwen Hunter, I have found another favorite fictional female! Rhea Lynch, M.D., works in the emergency room of a small South Carolina hospital. She is independent, feisty, very, very tough, although she's still smarting from a relationship gone bad.

When Rhea comes home from a much needed two-week vacation to find her best friend Marisa in the hospital fighting for her life, Rhea is devastated, but she has another shocker coming: Marisa's husband, Dr. Steven Braswell, will not let Rhea near Marisa.

Might as well have put a red flag right in front of the bull.

Once Rhea starts digging into the reasons behind Marisa's sudden 'stroke,' the bodies begin piling up. Rhea is not deterred and gets to the bottom of the mystery, with some pretty surprising results.

Gwen Hunter's new series is replete with hospital guts and gore, but her characterization of Dr. Lynch and her surroundings is so right-on that writing the stories any other way would seem the sissy's way out....and Dr. Rhea is no sissy!

I look for more from Gwen Hunter. She'll be on the NYTimes list soon! Trust me on this one.

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Good solid medical mystery........2002-06-09

I bought this book because I had read its sequel (Prescribed Danger) without realizing it was the second book in a series. I was intrigued enough by the characters and the backstory that I went back and got this book, even though I already knew 'who done it.'

As the blurb describes, Rhea Lynch is a doctor who has not much in the way of biological family, but she is fiercely loyal to her informally adopted family. That's why, when Rhea comes home to find her life-long friend Marisa all but dead and oddly isolated, there's nothing that can stop Rhea from finding out the truth about what's happened to Marisa.

Delayed Diagnosis was published by Mira Books, which is a division of Harlequin Romance, so it should come as no surprise to anyone that Rhea has a love interest or two in her life. However, affairs of the heart are not the focus of the story. Instead, the mystery and the medicine and the bonds of friendship and family come to the fore. And the dogs. Don't forget the dogs.

I found the Hunter's characters to be brash, colorful, and charming, often all at the same time. Granted, there is a certain level of cliche, but I don't know of many books with Southern characters who don't suffer from that sort of thing. Hunter conveys the concern and the anger and the fear of a close-knit family and community when faced with such personal horror fairly well.

Like I said, I already knew who the culprit (or culprits) was before I read this book, but I still felt that the denouement was well handled, though it was possible for a careful reader to have ascertained the ending well before the book ended.

All in all, I found this to be a fairly good medical mystery of the bookrack variety.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cliffhanger.......2002-02-05

Well, I could not put this book down. It rolled along like a freight train. Very well written. The medical terms were well explained and I really enjoyed it. Rhea is a great heroine and Mark is meant to be her guy.

        Product Description

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A604443. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In FY-97, over 14 percent of all recruits who entered basic training attrited and nearly one-third of these were due to motivational problems. Could adequate training in the Navy's Delayed Entry Program (DEP) provide the necessary tools to prepare recruits for basic training and reduce attrition? This thesis examines the DEP's effectiveness in preparing recruits for basic training. It examines how well the recruits were prepared; the types of training conducted; how effectively the recruits perceived their training to be while in the DEP; use of the DEP Personnel Qualification Standards (PQS); DEP meetings; and required recruiter/recruit weekly contact. Recruits at basic training were surveyed on various questions that pertained to their time in the DEP. The findings showed that training is not being conducted in the DEP. DEP PQS is not utilized as a primary training guide. Over one-third of the recruits sampled indicated that they were not told what to expect at basic training. Finally, over one-third of the recruits felt that the DEP did not prepare them for basic training. Recommendations were made to improve training in the DEP.

5 out of 5 stars Batman in the Fifties.......2007-06-16

My favorite Batman era even though I wasn't around in the 50's. Yes, some of it is corny and silly but I'll lay down money for this any day over the modern immoral, bloody, graphic, violent comics of today. This Batman is colorful (love Dick Sprangs work) and everything is drawn big and bold.
Batman is a decent friend and father figure and he actually acts like a hero. Batman actually smiles in some of these stories. I really like the SCI-FI approach they took in the 50's.
I would recommend this for parents who are looking for Batman comics that are safer for kids. Great Stories all though I still find Batmite somewhat
                    annoying.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good at the 40's collection, but still a very good buy.......2007-01-08

Whereas I found the 40's collection to be entirely thrilling, this one was quite a bit sillier.

But that's Batman in the 50's for ya!

This was when Batman began to go through his greatest changes. Weirdos began pointing their weird little fingers and making weird accusations against the Dynamic Duo, and thus the comic book staff began to make the stories wackier and wackier in an attempt to throw off the heat, or whatever you'd call it. This book reflects that in it's stories, but even so they're a very fun change from the dark and brooding Batman that we see today. You will need this book in order to see how Batman really changed throughout all of his history. Oh, and when you read this book you'll probably understand what I now understand- the only reason that the 60's Batman TV series (Which I LOVE!!) are "cheesey" is because they were based off of wacky stories like these!

4 out of 5 stars Goofy at times, but still fun.......2005-04-21

Like previous reviewers have mentioned, Batman in the Fifties contains light and humourous stories that include outer space adventures. There are also stories that aren't that far out there, and do contain some of the super villians. Also, the first apperances of Batwoman, Bat-Mite, and Ace the Bathound are in here, and the first appearance of Mr. Zero (later called Mr. Freeze). Also, like all of these Batman in the ... books, they are in color, which I wasn't expecting, but pleasantly surprised by, and there are little articles between stories giving information about where some of the chracters were thought up from, and things to expand your overall Batman knowledge.

                    Here are the stories:
The Batmobile of the 1950's- DC 156
The Secret of Batman's Utility Belt- DC 185
True History of Batman and Superman- World's Finest 81
The 100 Batarangs of Batman- DC 244
                    Ace, the Bat-hound- Batman 92
                    The Batwoman- DC 233
                    Batman Meets Bat-Mite- DC 267
The Secret Life of Catwoman- Batman 62
The Man Behind the Red Hood- DC168 (a very important Joker story)
                    Two-Face Strikes Again- Batman 81
The Ice Crimes of Mr. Zero- Batman 121
The Batman of Tomorrow- DC 216
Batman- The Superman of Planet X- Batman 113
The Creature From the Green Lagoon- DC 252
                    The Interplanetary Batman- Batman 128

5 out of 5 stars batman in the fifties.......2005-02-05

                    this was a funny book.
the days of the big props
when batman and robin gets trap
                    or chasing a villian.
the secrets of the batarangs..love it!
                    or thier sci-fi adventures.
                    this book is good.

4 out of 5 stars Good but the sixties one is better..........2004-10-04

This is an enjoyable book of Golden Age Batman. Here you get many great stories of classic Batman and Robin going up against some great classic villains like Joker (as The Red Hood),Catwoman,Two Face and Mr. Freeze. This time Batman and Robin get some help from Batwoman,Ace The Bathound,Batmite and even Superman. I'm more a fan of Silver Age comics, but I still liked this book and I think it will keep fans of Batman entertained almost as well as Batman in the sixties did.

What a gift it is to find the words that fit, the words that calm or quicken or clear or connect as needed! This is what I receive as I regulary use A Diary of Private Prayer morning and evening.

5 out of 5 stars Since 1973 I am enamored by John Baillie's Scottish Prayers.......2006-02-09

After reading other books by John Baillie, I was endeared to his Scottish Prayers, based on his Scottish Presbyterian Thelogy. As a gift from a daughter of one outstanding Presbyterian Pastor and Father, I noted the Greek inscription from Luke 18:1, "That men ought at all times to pray and not faint."

Each Day of Morning and Evening prayer followed the same format:
"Almighty and eternal God, Thou art hidden from my sight:
Thou art beyond the understanding of my mind:
Thy thoughts are not as my thoughts:
Thy ways are past finding out."

This became familiar to me as the Fourth Day for each Month. It was followed by yet a longer version of related Baillie Prayer. In the third place, there was another prose prayer with excerpts from Psalms, such as 17, 36, 57 and 91, In this Fourth Morning Prayer he concluded with a more personal and intimate prayer, beginning: "O Thou who alone knowest what lies before me this day, grant that in every hour of it I may stay close to Thee." There lies his wee touch of Scottish Theology.

From this first example I always linger over his final sentence:
"Suggest, direct, control every movement of my mind; for my Lord Christ's sake. Amen."

Nearly every day followed this same format with exceptions for the 11th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th Days, he altered both style and paragraphs. Yet that hardly ever affected his sustained interest in my daily Prayers.

Another poignant beginning prayer comes on 16th Morning: "With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early; for when thy judgements are in the earth, the inhabitants of the earth world will learn (your) righteousness." Many are longer yet equally intimate... Retired Chaplain, Fred W Hood "Barbara377" (Fayetteville,GA United States)

This is one of the best books, for individuals to learn not only how to oray, but its also good for those who are wanting to become
prayer warriors. I use this book to teach Christians the process of daily prayiny to become a life stile through there walk in life. Great Book

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Inspirational Call to Christian Living.......2004-02-14

Baillie has the rare ability to put into words the hopes and failings of Christian hearts and lives. I frequently give this book as a gift to friends, and most make it a part of their daily devotion. Even though Baillie uses the language of the King James Bible, he has a command of the language that is beautiful, compelling and inspirational. The thirty days of morning and evening prayers become more meaningful with repeated readings.

I've been enjoying ADOPP for over a year now. It is refreshing to repeat prayers that are humble, selfless, grace-filled. These prayers are becoming formative for me, and are also becoming close friends. They lead me to embrace Christian holiness and to humbly examine my own egocentricity, confessionally. After Shawchuck and Job's, "A Guide to Prayer", ADOPP is the book I've given away most. Sure, the language is a little archaic (I'm using old versions of the book. I'm not sure if recent printings have been updated) but it is well worth the investment. Of all the books I"ve given my father over the years, I'm sure this is his favorite, too.
