Book Description

Set in 1967 along the banks of the Mississippi River and bird flyway, thirty-one year-old Ellie Moon, recently divorced, hounded by a controlling mother, and haunted by her dead sister Rose, goes on a road trip with her estranged father, Tiny, famous gambler and conman. Ellie flies along her own inner flyway as they travel south to her sister's grave in Mississippi, to a near drowning in the Mississippi River, to a Voodoo ceremony on a deserted bayou near New Orleans. Tiny gambles his way down the river route, meeting his colorful cronies along the way, staying one step ahead of Dover, a Kentucky sheriff seeking revenge on Tiny for stealing his truck after a heated game of poker on Kentucky Lake. Ellie retrieves dark memories of her childhood that have haunted her adult life.

She learns that in order to forgive, she must first remember.

The author's style, rich with unforced detail, expertly conjures very different places—the sour air in a den where men have been gambling for days, the muddy, punishing waters of the Mississippi, the cool veranda of an antebellum building—and she crafts characters with the same meticulous attention. Land's narrative has a captivating momentum, and she offers countless subtle, appealing touches—Tiny's addiction to expensive cigars, Dover's fetish for footwear. An absorbing, well-written novel about coming to terms with personal demons.

5 out of 5 stars WILD RIDE.......2007-04-24

A WILD RIDE DOWN THE MISSISSIPPI IN A BUNNY BREAD TRUCK BEING CHASED BY A DEMENTED SHERIFF WITH A BOOT FETISH! BARBECUE, GAMBLING, EATING CONTESTS, MOONSHINE, VOODOO AND ALL KINDS OF UNEXPECTED TWISTS AND TURNS MADE THIS BOOK HARD TO PUT DOWN. I WANT TO SEE THE MOVIE WITH JOHN GOODMAN AS TINY.

5 out of 5 stars Feelings..........2007-03-19

I loved this book! I felt has if I knew Ellie (looking for love) and Tiny (a gentle giant). Like a "fly on a wall" I picture Tiny in his white suit playing cards in the heat and sweating like no tomorrow! Taking a hanky, removing his hat, and wiping his forehead. Going on a joy ride with Tiny and with him taking care of Ellie in his own way - proved his deep love for his daughter at any cost.

3 out of 5 stars Good Start for New Writer .......2007-03-15

The first two chapters of Mississippi Flyway move slowly, as if both main character and author are struggling to find their inner voices. Ellie's inaction stems from her senses being thrust into `lockdown position.' Rand is just trying too hard, as a new writer must, I suppose. Once the adventure begins, the reader is transported to flyways and byways reminiscent of Tom Sawyer and Huckelberry Finn's Mississippi. The pace becomes lively, the plot intriguing. Descriptions are downloaded high-speed: here's a one-room shack beside Kentucky Lake, here's a no-nonsense '67 Chevy pickup sporting twelve pairs of shoes and boots.

From back roads to childhood places revisited, the reader experiences life, and life's questions, alongside Ellie and Tiny. The provincial flavor of Mississippi Flyway reminds me of one of Barbara Kingsolver's shorter novels; the inner journey of Ellie Moon calls to mind The Secret Life of Bees. Mississippi Flyway is a good read, and a good introduction to a promising writer. A solid 3 1/2 stars!

4 out of 5 stars Mythic Journey.......2007-03-05

You'll love this book. The characters, with all their human flaws, are compelling, as is the journey Ellie Moon takes with her larger-than-life father Tiny. Ellie's inner journey is as captivating as her travels with Tiny. Read this!

5 out of 5 stars Prose that flows like the river.......2007-02-10

Nel Rand's prose flows like the river she writes about with such familiarity and love. The first few chapters were slow to get into because the story seemed to be more of a woman's book, but then Tiny, the truant father came into the picture and I could't put it down until I finished it. The road trip was a great adventure well-told. Mississippi Flyway has turned out to be one of my favorite books! If you like character-driven fiction and a great story line read this book.

        Book Description

This book documents the outstanding antique waterfowl and bird decoys of one of the greatest of all flyways - the Mississippi. The majority of the examples used in this book have never been illustrated before. Included are decoys of a wide range of species of ducks, geese, swans and shorebirds as well as the more unusual egrets, gulls, crows, owls and one very rare flicker. Written by a prominent collector and student of Mississippi Flyway decoys, this book clearly documents the classic decoy of the flyway and presents a broad spectrum of examples of the individual makers in every important area. Chapters are included on Canada, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Mississippi and Louisiana. The helpful carvers index gives the location and important dates for the 150 individual carvers. This book is a complete statement of the rich decoy heritage of the Mississippi Flyway. It is an indispensible reference book for everyone interested in collecting waterfowl and bird decoys of this original form of American folk art.

Wow. My first book by Jo Goodman has me convinced it wont be my last. What a story! There were so many twists and turns in this I didnt know what to expect next....I would have given this 5 stars in a heartbeat, but for 2 things that niggled at me. First of all..there was so much going on that sometimes I felt that the main relationship between Colin and Mercedes got a bit lost in the mix. My second complaint that was the most glaring..to me anyways...was that I loved the character Aubrey so much that I wanted him to have his own book instead of just having his relationship with Sylvia mentioned in passing. I was bordering on liking him more than Colin and I really hate it when secondary characters become more attractive than the central players. All in all, this was a FANTASTIC read with an ending that made me immediately order its sequel. I highly recommend reading "My Steadfast Heart"..you wont be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Every once in a while you strike gold!.......2003-04-12

I hadn't read Jo Goodman until I recently read "Tempting Torment". I loved Noah's story and finding it was the last of a trilogy about 3 brothers eagerly hit the net to find the first 2 books. (When you hate to see a good book end, it's great to find it is a series!!) So I found Steadfast Heart and curled up. It didn't take me long to find out that SH was the first of a trilogy of 3 other Goodman brothers....whoops.....but I fell in love with Colin, the hero, on the first page and never put the book down.(And am now starting sequel Reckless Heart). Jo Goodman has outdone herself with this one and Colin's story is not only a keeper but is spectacular. It's not a boy meets girl kiss kiss book. There's a real story with multiple factions that are all relevent and could be stories of their own. It's about the hearbreak of being orphaned and torn from his baby brothers, of commitment in trying to find them, of compassion in trying to help Mercedes and her family, and of the evolution of dealing with all those human emotion. A love story, murder mystery, emotional journey that will bring tears and giggles......Don't miss this one. It's a book that I read fast to find out what was going to happen and yet dreaded getting to the end. I'm sure a re-read is in its future for me, but first I have to "find" Decker and Greydon....Jo, you have my admiration for your talent and a new follower.Thanks.

                    4 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2000-08-02

This is the first book of a trilogy about 3 brother who were orphaned and separated at young ages. My Steadfast Heart is about the oldest brother, Colin, and his lifelong search for his brothers. Along the way he meets Mercedes, a penniless aristocrat trying to save her cousins and the family inheritance. Sparks fly when Colin claims her family's estate as payment for her uncle's gambling debts. Find out how these brothers persevere and find each other. Ms. Goodman is excellent at creating rich, humorous plots and characters. If you are a Jo Goodman fan, you will this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2000-03-17

This book has me hooked on to romance novels. On a road trip I ran out of books to read and my cousin/best friend loaned me this book. I was once very skeptical of romance novels, but this book is excellent, and I would recomend this book for any female, skeptic or no.

I bought the book for my daughter and she couldn't put it down. She says it is the best book she has ever read and has already started the next book (My Reckless Heart). Has the third book in the trilogy (With All My Heart) been published yet?

4 out of 5 stars An Ok Series.......2003-07-24

This is the omnibus for the Star Trek: Double Helix series about a mysterious villain who has been releasing biological agents across the Alpha Quadrant over a period of years.

Book One reads the most as a medical thriller, as one of the Enterprise-Dýs first missions is to stop a plague killing people of mixed descent on a Federation colony troubled with racial tensions. Book Two has Dr. Pulaski, of TNGýs season two fame, travel to Trek Nor to stop a plague killing Bajorans and their Cardassian overseers alike. Book Three is supposed to be about Spock and McCoy taking care of a virus assassinating the Romulan royal family, but itýs actually about a young Starfleet officer coming to terms with his past as a POW and insecurity about not measuring up to his ancestors and old heroes such as Kirk. Book Four has Tom Riker team up with Chakotayýs Maquis crew to fight a plague on a world populated by people of interspecies descent. Book Five concludes the series with Captain Mackenzie and the crew of the ýExcaliburý teaming up with Picard and Riker to stop the villain from destroying the Federation in one blow. Book Six is a prequel that sets up the series by showing how Picard, then captain of the Stargazer, drove the villain to plot his diabolical plan to destroy the Federation.

Thereýs a little bit of something for everybody here: New Frontier and Stargazer adventures, cameos galore, and details on how Dr. Pulaski left the Enterprise and how Tom Riker joined the Maquis. By themselves, the books are pretty good. However, overall as a series itýs a bit of a dud. The medical thriller aspect which is supposed to be the basis of the entire series is not used much, and in some books is totally absent. The mysterious villain started off with promise but by the end of the series became nothing more than your typical madman. And the prequel did nothing to explain just how the villain turned to biological weapons, let alone became so powerful. Other than that, itýs ok.

                          5 out of 5 stars A great set inside a great series!!.......2002-12-27

This is one of those sets where you read the second book, and are curious about the second. When I bought them, I bought them individually and then I wanted the next and the next. I had a hard time finding one, and went nuts. The other good thing is you don't necessarily have had to read the one before to understand if you come in late. I like it when that happens. I recommend reading them all, and now you can buy them all together. Happy reading!

                          5 out of 5 stars A great Omnibus for a great series!.......2002-10-30

                          "Infection" by John Gregory Betancourt

The Enterprise is called to Archaria III, a planet jointly colonized by humans and Peladians. A new disease has cropped up and is only treatable (the double helix), in a temporary fashion. The Enterprise supposed to deliver the drug, quarantine the planet and see what help they might render. What follows is an excellent story, primarily using Dr. Crusher in her quest to find the cure. The author set everything up very well and wrapped up his portion beautifully.

"Vectors" by Dean Wesley Smith & Kristin Kathryn Rusch

Finally we have a story using Dr. Pulaski, who was unceremoniously dumped from the show. Not that she was anywhere near a replacement for Dr. Crusher. It is particularly interesting to see "Terok Nor" during the occupation and have the interaction with Gul Dukat. I felt the character development was very good and the Ferengi portions were written very well. The only true complaint is that the author's seemed to have done a poor job of closing out Kira's story.

                          "Red Sector" by Diane Carey

Red Sector is a fantastic story. It's very refreshing having a book that concentrates almost primarily on a non main character in John Eric Stiles. The character is extremely well thought out and written. The author nailed Spock and a hundred and thirty something Dr. McCoy perfectly. I'm dying to find out who the voice is at this point. Hopefully the next three in the Double Helix series will be as good as this one and the other two were.

                          "Quarantine" by John Vornholt

John Vornholt kicks out another fantastic story. Quarantine gives us a good idea of how "Tom Riker" ends up joining the Maquis. As is par for the course with John Vornholt, he goes into great detail describing a beautiful planet and all of its surroundings. Not a lot of Trek authors do that. I thought Torres seemed a little soft, considering her personality, but that can be explained away.

"Double or Nothing" By Peter David

This is another great installment to the New Frontier and the Double Helix series. Not having read the last of the Double Helix books yet, it seems that this one pretty much finishes the Double Helix storyline???? A favorite quote from the book, Riker - "I've got to get off this ship." Peter David did an excellent job of integrating Picard and Riker into the New Frontier. It's really interesting and well done how he brought Riker and Shelby together again. That portion was done very well and even better than I'd expected in another meeting of those two.

"The First Virtue" by Michael Jan Friedman & Christie Golden

The First Virtue is an excellent conclusion. It pretty much wraps up the reasoning to everything we learned in "Double or Nothing." In the First Virtue, we learn why Gerrid Thul wanted to create the Double Helix virus and why he wanted so much revenge for the loss of his only child. Both authors did a great job with their portions. The plot is well thought out, especially the portions of the book with Commander Jack Crusher and Lieutenant Tuvok. I felt that they captured Tuvok's personality quite well and gave a precursor to some of the decisions and general personality we saw on screen in Voyager.

Overall, I would recommend this Omnibus to any fan of good Star Trek fiction.

                          Book Description

A brilliant speaker, gifted thinker, and inspired writer, Dr. Ernest S. Holmes founded the United Church of Religious Science, an international ministry that flourishes today. His message is simple: The universe has intelligence, purpose, and order. By understanding its principles and applying them to ourselves, we can see who we are and what we truly want in life. Creative Mind, produced in 1919, is a simple guide for the many thousands who came to hear his words and wished to know more.

Creative Mind is a little book designed to explain what people must discover for themselves about the nature of the universe and the creative power of their own minds. Its message is as fresh today as it was a century ago.

                          5 out of 5 stars Conscious Creation.......2006-11-17

The question is not whether or not you are creative, the real question is what are you creating? You cannot not be creative. This is the way you were made. Everything that is in your life is there because on some level you manifested those experiences. I know what some of you might be thinking as you look at what is in your life, "Why would I create bad relationships? Why would I create money problems? Why would I create disease and health issues?"

For the most part, most of us create our lives out of default. We go through our lives unconsciously aware of what we are manifesting into our experience. Most of us are operating on beliefs that we are not even fully aware of. Most of us have not sat down with ourselves and asked ourselves what we really believe about God, ourselves, our place in the universe, what we are worthy of, what we are deserving of, about money, about relationships, about life in general. It may be difficult to understand that you really do play a major role in your life, but once you accept and embrace and embody the Truth that you can change your life, by changing your ideas about it, you will see how creatively empowered you are and have always been.

This classic book written by Ernest Holmes was his first book, I believe. Most of his books are overshadowed by his classic, The Science of Mind text. Which, if you are not versed in Holmes, is not the best book to start off with. Of course, I love it now, but when I first began to study Religious Science and read from that book, I found it pedantic and very cumbersome. I actually think and feel that this rather small book of less than a hundred pages (hardbound edition) should be the Science of Mind text...but that's just my opinion.

He writes, "Spirit creates through Law. The Law of Mind is always in action. Mind cannot act unless intelligence sets it in motion. In the great universal mind, man is a center of intelligence, and every time he thinks he sets mind into action..."

What he is saying in layman's terms is "What you think is what you create..." A lot of people really do not want to believe this and even if you choose not to believe this, it'll still be working in your life by showing up as something you don't believe. I'm sorry to be a "killjoy" in this review, but you really are responsible for creating your life. The world is in the "mess" it is now because for the most part we have all been "unconscious". We just thought that things happen. Nothing can happen unless we let it.

Here is something to think about. Fundamentalist Christians really want you to believe that Armegeddon is approaching. Could it be that we are actually going to have an Armegeddon because enough people believe it will take place? Kind of scary, huh? Could you imagine if we had enough people believing that paradise could take place, or utopia is possible, or we really could learn to coexist peacefully with others? You see, we are always using the same Creative Mind to think with and we will always experience (individually as well as collectively) the sum total of what we believe to be true.

Jesus the Christ said, "It is done unto you AS you believe..."

There is no other way. Your life up until now is a reflection of what you hold to be true, as is mine. I had an experience the other day where I was literally shocked that I still held some rather disempowering beliefs about myself. Not that I am perfect, but I am fairly conscious of the thoughts I am holding and when I thought those thoughts, I thought, "Oh, wow...those are not empowering at all. Next!"

Y'see, it really is easy to change our thoughts. The tricky part is keeping them changed. This does not mean you need to become fearful or superstitious about all the thoughts you once had, it just means that now you are ready to change them and even if you're not, that's okay. But aren't you ready to have a more fulfilling life, a richer life, a more abundant life. I believe you are otherwise you wouldn't be reading this review looking for a way to change.

Consider this review as your sign...but get the book...I promise you, you'll love it.

Peace and Blessings to you this day.

I've read (almost) all of Ernest Holmes' books, as well as many other metaphysical books in this nature. This is BY FAR, IN MY OPINION, his best one! Much more dramatic, effective and clear. If I had to pick any one of Ernest's books to be my bible, it would be this one. This is the first book he wrote, and I believe that's why it's so good.
