Well, the story is about a girl's life in the middle of a civil war. She was born in a liberal family, so she had many influences: her father, a political man, her mother, a woman that liked all in the rule, and her aunt. She's between two men: Daniel, a revolutionist, and Antonio, a doctor.
I really didn't like the book: the characters are unconvincing (I mean, who 17-year-old married couple doesnt quarrel, at least once?) And the way Emilia and Daniel slept together, and when their parents knew, they were like This is XX century!!!!
I mean, maybe in our days, but, in those times???Nah!
You'll get bored, because Daniel leaves Emilia like a thousand times, and at the end she didn't marry neither of the guys. She lived with Antonio and was Daniel's lover. She loved them both. I mean (????)

Los libros de 5 estrellas son aquéllos que se te quedan grabados en la mente después de muchos años, y que han surtido un cambio duradero en el lector. Este libro dista de ser por mucho tal cosa. Sólo me acuerdo que me pareció aburridísimo, y que ni la historia ni el lenguaje me convencieron.

Mal de Amores is a Masterpiece
>This is a super piece of literature , where the author Angeles Mastretta beguiles the reader with a novel that merges fiction and fantasy with the reality of Mexico's political context, that starts with the Mexican Revolution. This Mexican revolution starts before the fall of the Dictatorship of Porfirio Torres and ends around the democratic presidency of Venustiano Carranza.
History and fiction run together. Emilia Sauri, the principal character of the story is a beautiful girl that is raised by utterly modern parents in the city of Puebla and then becomes a beautiful, hardworking doctor, marvelous woman that falls in love with Daniel, who is a Mexican revolutionary. This love becomes a turmoil since Daniel, inside the context of civil war, only comes and goes intermittently. However he becomes the love of her life. At the end, Emilia choses between Daniel and Dr. Zavalza to keep her life going.
However, it would be a pity not to point out that all the other characters of the novel are so genuine and so well conceived, that it becomes impossible not to keep reading. The plot, the characters and most of all the impeccable fast reading prose makes of this novel a piece of art that shouldn't be kept unread. If you want fiction, you get fiction, if you want erotic relationships, you get it, if you want reality you also get it and, if you want to make yourself a favor go and get the book and read it.

I just finished reading this book, and couldn't wait to review it. Simply put, this book is excellent!! It has all the ingredients for a wonderful novel, in just the right amount.
The plot is captivating, the characters are realistic, the descriptions are fascinating, all of which make this book a highly entertaining, fun filled and extremelly enjoyable experience!
The book tells the life story of Emilia, a girl born into a drastically changing society during one of the most turbulent times of Mexican history, who grows up to become a free spirited, strong will, self reliant woman in a time when the simple thought of a woman having a say in things was forbidden.
De lo mejor de A. Mastretta.......2002-01-09
He leúo Mal de Amores en dos ocasiones y me parece un libro excelente, pues retrata a mujeres mexicanas que se salen de los moldes establecidos por nuestra sociedad. En Mal de Amores Emilia no se adhiere a un estereotipo de mujer casada y leal a su marido, sino leal a sus convicciones y a los hombres que ama.
Recomiendo tanto la lectura de este libro, asEcomo la de Arráncame la vida, Mujeres de ojos grandes y Ninguna eternidad como la mú} (aunque la protagonista llega a ser una especie de Emilia Sauri II en algunos momentos).

Sexy, Steamy, and Hot!.......2007-02-21
Wow! What a sexy story! Very romantically presented with excellent characterizations. Vicki Lewis Thompson knows how to write tantillizing stories! I was mesmerized and couldn't put the book down until I got to the end!
Unfortunately, when Charlie discovered Mark's secret, instead of confronting him with it, she devised an elaborate scheme to test him. The way Mark ultimately regained Charlie's trust was highly irresponsible. This immature and childish game-playing turned me off and distracted from the fun and sexiness of the story. It would have been more realistic and would have sent a better message to have the conflict resolved through open communication and honesty. I was glad for the redeeming ending!

Absolutely loved this book! It so reminded me of the Runaway Bride and took leaving at the altar to a new level. I loved how VLT took the four main characters plus the "jilted" women and messed them into a fun, wacky and sassy storyline. A very entertaining read.

This is really a 3 1/2 but not bad enough to be a three. The premise of the story was good but there was no follow through on it. Mark has broken five engagements before but now thinks he's found "the one" in Charlie. Mark proposes to each woman on the first night after they have sex. He does the same to Charlie and they plan to marry in two weeks.
Here's my problem. Charlie finds out about the broken engagements and that the longest notice any of the brides got was 4 days before the wedding, the shortest 10 minutes; really a crummy thing for Mark to do. Yet she doesn't hesitate to plan to go through with the wedding, even though Mark still doesn't tell her about it. AND she never tells Mark she knows!
That's rather irresponsible and stupid behavior. She's pledging the rest of her life to a man who keeps such a major thing from her. And they never really do talk about it and he never really explains why he kept doing it. They need to get some serious couples therapy before marrying.

I'm not into poetry, but a friend recommened "The Naked Truth" after all of the women in her office was talking about it. I was not disappointed. All I could say after every poem was WOW! This is a MUST read for all poetry fans and for those that are not into poetry, you should read it as well. You will have a hard time putting it down.

Over 33 poems compile THE NAKED TRUTH, and two chapters from his upcoming novel Chapters of Ecstasy. The poetry contained within the pages touch on the needs of women, her sexual awareness, the pain she endures at the hands of a man, why men cheat, what matters to men and how men and women can satisfy each other. The poems are erotic in nature and contain an unnerving sense of understanding by a man who knows what we as women crave in relationships whether physical or emotional.
Javon64 states there are two types of people chronicled in this collection: those who are inhibited and those who are uninhibited. The eroticism displayed throughout THE NAKED TRUTH covers a myriad of sexual fantasies, fetishes and sexual freedom. The poetry includes tributes to the author's mother and grandmother, male/female friendships, one-night stands, foot fetishes and uninhibited sexual encounters. The poems are not offensive, but truly erotic in nature. I enjoyed the entire collection with my favorites including: "Can I Catch Your Tears," "One Night Stand," "How Sex Use To Be" and "Wanted: A Good Man."
THE NAKED TRUTH is really an intuitive bare-it-all compilation of poetry. Javon64 deals with topics women and men have contemplated and have lived in their lives; he just put them to rhyming prose. His style is unique but simple. Javon64's poetry is like an autobiography of his life as he states "...a person isn't completely reborn until they can stand naked in their own truth." This collection is filled with truthful insight into the sexual relationships of men and women and how the emotional portions affect them. Also, the little black satin cover is a very nice touch. If you like erotica and poetry, you will enjoy this little black book.

I first read this book 20+ years ago in anticipation of my second marriage. It was not around for my first marriage but I wonder how things might have been different, had I known some of the information in this book.
I am just getting ready to give my copy to a niece getting married, as well as celebrating our own 20th anniversary. There's some good, practical and useful reading here.

Fantastic book version of the series episodes!.......2004-06-18
And especially interesting because of the Xinti, who, as anyone who watches the television series, knows are responsible for millions of dead humans on Earth. As fascinating as "The Expanse" episodes were, this novel brings the newest addition to the Star Trek legacy out in ways only a novel can. This book following the ENTERPRISE and company ranks with other sci-fi books: "Stranger in a Strange Land", "Puppet Masters", "2001", "2010", "Rendezvous with Rama", "Ringworld", all the "Star Trek" novels of course and all "Star Wars" books too, as well as books as new to the genre as "Advent of the Corps" and others.
ST - Enterprise: The Expanse.......2004-05-01
Star Trek - Enterprise: "The Expanse" a novelization by J.M. Dillard based on the episodes "The Expanse" and "The Xindi" written by Rich Berman and Brannon Braga follows these episodes quite well. I saw the episodes after I read the book and I must say that I enjoyed the book much better.
"The Expanse" starts out with a partial destruction of Earth as seven million people die from Florida, to Cuba, to Venezuela and that a probe from the planet Xindi is to blame. As this probe crashes to Earth, Archer and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC NX-01 are being recalled to Earth and are refitted for a rather gruelling mission.
"The Expanse" has good charater interaction and you get a good feeling that you begin to interact with the crew when reading this book. There is good character involvement between Jonathan Archer and his crew as they are in spacedock around Earth and the interaction to the next mission. As the Enterpise and her crew are coming to Earth they are intercepted by a Suliban ship from the future and yes, who else but Silik is the one to bring Archer aboard his ship to hear "a humanoid" from the future tell Archer what's in store for the Earth.
"The Expanse" moves along quite quickly and you'll find that you've finished the book in short order as the NX-01 is sent to the Delphic Expanse to find the homeworld of the Xindi. The Xindi are a race of 5 different species all of which are intelligent... primate, reptilian, marsupial, insectoid and sea creatures simular to a dolphin. All of the races work together in a government simular to a republic, but they've been tipped as to what happens to their homeworld in 400 years in the future and there is a temporal rift that may occur.
I enjoyed this book as it was a quick read and highly entertaining I gave this book a 4 star rating for its entertainment value and I would suggest that you read the book before you see the episodic television. You'll appreciate the action-adventure much better. All in all, the was an adventure where there is a crisis and Archer must make decissions that will affect the crew and the future of Earth.
Archer and crew sets out to stop the Xindi.......2004-04-14
After much bashing by media crtics and some fans the Enterprise series finally decides to go where no man has gone before with an urgent mission to stop an enigmatic race called the Xindi from destroying Earth.After Earth is ravaged and 7 million are dead the Enterrpise (NX-01)is recalled to Earth by Starfleet. But before that they must first deal with the Renegade Klingon named Duras who wants revenge from Capt. Archer. The story then focuses on the NX-01's journey to find a Xindi who may be able to aid them in locating the Xindi. I wont give the rest of the story away so go watch the episode or read the book. Just remember this series is not as bad as everyone says and that now I believe the stories will be more ambitious and live up to all Star Trek fans demands.

If you watched the episodes, the book ruins it. J.M. Dillard, the person who wrote Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection has now written the Star Trek: Enterprise book, "The Expanse."
It tells the story of the second season finale, "The Expanse", and the next season's premiere, "The Xindi" and everything in between. It deals with the Xindi probe attack on Earth, to the vengeful Duras, who still wants Archer to pay for his crimes, to the NX-O1's incursion into the Expanse, to the capture of Kessick, the Xindi-Humanoid, and finally, to the Xindi Council, who are aware that Enterprise has entered the Expanse searching for their weapon, in which the Council is so eager to deploy.
"The Expanse" is a really great book. If you haven't seen the episodes "The Expanse" and "The Xindi" then this is one book that you should pick up this holiday season. But, like I said before, if you have seen these two episodes, then, you wouldn't want to waste $12 buying this book.
Not bad for a novelization.......2003-11-03
Of course when you read a novelization you have to adjust your expectations. But as far as noveliations go, this isn't too bad. Dilard does add a whole lot to the story that was up on the screen to begin with, but after reading it back-to-back with Diane Carey's novelization of "Broken Bow," I had to appreciate the craftsmanship Dillard brought to the story. It stood in stark contrast to the cynical, quickies cranked out by Carey.
So...don't expect much new (novelizations haven't done much of that since Vonda McIntyre's treatments of TWOK and TSFS), but if you enjoyed the episodes and want to read them in print, this one'll do it for you.

Alex Polari has a very special capacity of writing and bringing to life this beautifull story of such an important person, Padrinho Sebastiao.

Very inspiring

I really wanted to find out about the Santo Daime movement, and while this book has a lot of information, there is just way too much of the very mental ramblings of the author. While in many books this is a good thing, here it is a real distraction.
The only worthwhile book on Santo Daime in English.......1999-07-19
There is much on the internet about Santo Daime, almost none of which accurately portrays the church or the religious and spiritual significance of the Daime. This book, however, is a deep discussion of the church, the doctrine and the Daime which offers a clear picture from a man who has traveled far on the spiritual path of the Santo Daime. Interested people, please read this book before reading anything else.
