Book Description

District Attorney Varga is shot dead. Then Judge Sanza is killed. Then Judge Azar. Are these random murders, or part of a conspiracy? Inspector Rogas thinks he might know, but as soon as he makes progress he is transferred and encouraged to pin the crimes on the Left. And yet how committed are the cynical, fashionable, comfortable revolutionaries to revolution—or anything? Who is doing what to whom?

Equal Danger is set in an imaginary country, one that seems all too real. It is the most extreme—and gripping—depiction of the politics of paranoia by Leonardo Sciascia, master of the metaphysical detective novel.

4 out of 5 stars "A conspiracy is everything that ordinary life is not.......2007-07-31

it's the inside game, cold, sure, undistracted, forever closed off to us." Don Delillo

As the movie Casablanca draws to a close, Capt. Renault witnesses the shooting of a German officer by Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart). Capt. Renault turns to his minions and says "Major Strasser has been shot. Round up the usual suspects."

In Leonardo Sciascia's "Equal Danger" the command to round up the usual suspects comes at the beginning of the story. Local District Attorney Vargas has just been murdered and Inspector Rogas is put in charge of the investigation. Soon after Rogas begins this investigation two judges are murdered. Rogas senses that the victims and the murders are related but he is soon told to forget his investigation and round up the usual revolutionary suspects. Despite this admonition, and while paying lip service to his orders, Rogas' investigation continues. He identifies a suspect and sets out in pursuit.

Although this sounds like a fairly straightforward detective story, in the hands of Leonardo Sciascia it is anything but formulaic. Sciascia, born in Sicily in 1921, sets Equal Danger (as he states in a note to this book) in an imaginary country; "a country where ideas no longer circulate, where principles - still proclaimed, still acclaimed - are made a daily mockery." However, Sciascia also acknowledged that one can think of the story as being set in the Italy or Sicily of the 1970s. For Sciascia, the Italy (and Sicily) of the 1970s was a time when the center fell apart, when political instability proved a wonderful breeding ground for a dysfunctional triad of terror (the Red Brigades), crime (the Mafia) and corruption (the entire political and judicial system). It was a place where those three pillars of dysfunction seemed to share more common interests than differences and where cynical, if short-lived alliances amongst the power elite created the cold inside game that Delillo describes as a grand conspiracy.

Rogas is aware of the existence of the closed inside game and seems determined to beat it. He spots the surveillance placed on him and seems to believe his skeptical nature will keep him out of trouble. Rogas is clever, to be sure. He can cite Rousseau, Diderot, and Montaigne, much to the surprise of erudite witnesses seeking to speak down to a lowly inspector. But, as Sciascia writes of Rogas as the book progresses, "one can be cleverer than another, not cleverer than all others". The result of the investigation stunned me. I sat there reading and asked myself, "did Sciascia really do that?" I won't reveal a key plot element but simply say that this surprise took "Equal Danger" beyond the detective genre and into another realm of fiction altogether.

While "Equal Danger" begins like a straightforward detective story the reader is aware almost immediately that he/she will be taken down a less traveled road during the story. However, the path Sciascia does take truly took me by surprise. "Equal Danger", ultimately, is one of those few books I may enjoy reading again. Recommended. L. Fleisig

3 out of 5 stars Ponderous Parable.......2004-05-02

This slender novella is more of a parable about government power than it is a traditional mystery or thriller (in an afterword, Sciascia himself describes it as a ìfable about power anywhere in the worldî). Written in 1971, the story follows a policeman in charge of investigating the murders of two judges. The setting is a unnamed country where the government and the supposed opposition are merely two sides of the same coin, and is clearly based on the author's native Sicily. Inspector Rogas's investigations rapidly lead him into areas his superiors would rather he left alone, and he is repeatedly told to focus on pinning the blame on "revolutionaries". As more and more judges and prosecutors gets killed, it becomes clearer and clearer that Rogas is being diverted for political motives. This surface story is merely a vehicle, however, for Sciascia's views on the limits of justice and reason. The Inspector is alone as a man of principles, and the unmistakable message is that only in the movies are principles and reason enough to carry the day. It's not the most gripping story, but for those of a metaphysical bent, it is full of intellectual diversions such as the question as to whether there can be such a thing as a judicial error, and discussions of Voltaire, Pascal, and others. The translation is crisp and lively, but the overall tone is so ponderous that it's not exactly the most engaging work.

5 out of 5 stars Metaphysical Detective Novel.......2004-02-14

At its heart the English/American detective novel is a story about procedure. A crime takes place and the hero methodically advances step by step to unravel the mystery. The pleasure in these stories is observing the hero's clever reasoning as he solves the puzzle. The procedural detective story usually ends with evil being punished and balance returned to a decent world.

Leonardo Sciascia's Equal Danger comes from another tradition. The Latin Detective Novel has some procedural elements in it but the focus is a meditation on the nature of society. Sciascia begins his novel by quoting Rousseau, "...Tell me where on earth their exists a country where it is a crime to keep one's given word and to be generous, where the good man is despised and the wicked man is honored."

As a Scicilian, this world of corruption and silent complicity is all too familiar to Sciascia. On the surface, Equal Danger is story about the search for a serial killer of judges and prosecuting attorneys. Below the surface, this is metaphysical detective novel that tries to give insight into a failed civil society.

Although elegantly written, Equal Danger is not light reading. If one is interested in the Latin Detective Novel, read the more accessable Michael Dibdin, Rubem Fonseca or Paco Ignacio Taibo. Sciascia is more difficult to read and understand but he is well worth the effort.

4 out of 5 stars Suspense, Mystery, and Corruption!.......2000-04-09

Equal Danger is a short story about the vastly unstable Italian society in the early 1970's. Sciascia presents to us the danger of the corruptibility of government and how it directly relates to the massive amounts of terrorism in the early 1970s. This book is highly reccomended, and definately requires a lot of thought! If you love novels about conspiracy, murder, and drama in the context of the cold war....You will thouroughly enjoy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Unbelieveable Tale about Post War Italy.......2000-04-20

Equal Dangers is a must read for anyone interested in the culture of the post world war two European societies. This book is a great reflection on the difficulties a society (Italy) had in re-constituting itself. Sciascia accomplishes this in such an intersting, "murder mystery" type of way that makes this book a real page turner.

4 out of 5 stars Basic tools for the online gold rush.......2007-09-06

My experience was similar to that of "gordo the lordo." Plenty of clicks but just a few orders. Getting clicks isn't hard. What kind of clicks? That's the $1,000,000 question.

As a search engine advertiser, your task is to capture the clicks of consumers who have made a buying decision or are very close. These clicks will make money for you. The clicks of people who are "just browsing" will cost you money. You have to be a student of online search behavior.

You capture money-making clicks by finding highly relevant keywords and writing focused ads. How hard can it be? Get your ads up and running, tweak them, and watch the money roll in. You only need basic English skills and common sense. A degree in advertising or English is not going to help.

I would encourage anyone to try it because you may discover that you have the knack. By spending $500 or so, you should be able to get an idea how well you might do. Don't make the mistake I made, which was to let my ads capture several hundred clicks without getting any orders. I kept thinking "the orders will kick in." They didn't. Stop your ads after 200-300 clicks and wait for results. (Even 50 clicks are too many with retail sites.) You can either tweak the ad (if it's close to break-even) or abandon it and try something else. Tweaking wouldn't have helped my ads, which earned pennies for every dollar spent on clicks.

You are playing the keyword market on Google. Some keywords sell for $20 per click and more. Search engine advertisers don't get caught up in keyword "bubbles." They are only after potent "value" keywords that sell for 25 cents or less.

The keyword market is like a gold rush. Everywhere you look the ground is torn up by hordes of stampeding prospectors. You wander far and wide hoping to find a stone that hasn't been turned. How many thousands of other guys are out there trying the same thing? Good luck.

You never know. You might have the knack. Affiliate Millions gives you everything you need to know to get started. When I joined my first affiliate program and set up my first ads, I had the book open and followed it not step-by-step but word-for-word. It's just the kind of "excruciating" detail a beginner needs.

Mr. Borelli explains how to evaluate the earnings potential of an affiliate program. The profit, or course, depends on your revenue per click. An adgroup for $20 books may not be the way to go.

Should you actually make money, there is a chapter on campaign finance. You have to manage your cash flow to optimize performance. If another book on online advertising has this kind of chapter, I haven't seen it.

Mr. Borelli has set up the Affiliate Millions website for "prospectors." The only item listed for sale is the book. There is a free monthly newsletter. There are no ads. Mr. Borelli answers questions on the site's discussion board. If you are at all familiar with the "get rich online" racket you know how exceptional this is. Such sites are usually crammed with ads and have little useful information.

Mr. Borelli's advice is a bit sketchy and vague. That's because it has to be. If Mr. Borelli were to disclose his winning formula, everyone would copy him and he would be out of business within hours. All he can do is point people in right direction. Within that proviso, he provides clear and valuable information.

Mr. Borelli makes no promises that prospectors will get rich. He merely suggests that it is possible. He ends the opening chapter with "Take it step-by-step and read the chapters that follow, and you'll stand a good chance of becoming an Affiliate Millionaire yourself." If he starts the book by saying your chances are practically nil, no one will continue reading.

Like "gordo," I'm amazed that anyone could make millions at this. It would take several phenomenally successful campaigns. You would have to come up with new ones all the time. Think of the millions in revenue Mr. Borelli is generating for the companies he advertises for. They should throw a party for him.

      1 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me.......2007-08-21

I tried the principles in this book. I set up some ads for a variety of products and different companies through Commission Junction and was, at first, delighted that I was getting a good amount of clicks. I was confident the ads were good enough because of some experience I've had in the past writing copy.

However, after over 250 clicks to major websites that boasted a large earnings per click, I got one sale and a large $ loss. The ads were good enough to catch the people's attention, but no one was buying.

I think this is a tough way to go at it. A website might be the better way to go. I am amazed that anyone could make any money doing this, never mind millions.

4 out of 5 stars Direct and Immediately Useful.......2007-07-24

I was seeking a detailed, practical and thorough "how-to" approach to build internet-based revenue. This book filled the bill. It covered all key facets of the approach - particularly helpful for a layperson - as well as for someone with web-based experience (as am I). I have yet to test the specific recommendations. The book was solid.

2 out of 5 stars Basic start but could leave you broke.........2007-07-12

Its true that money can be made by signing up for affiliate programs and marketing them on pay per click search engines. However, its possible to lose a great deal of money and this book doesn't do a good enough job helping people calculate the risks. For example, the author indicates he markets Amazon products. Amazon on its basic associate program pays 4%. A $20.00 book pays a comission of .80 cents. But in pay per click advertising a marketer can pay 30, 40 cents and even a dollar depending on the keywords. In a test marketing the new Harry Potter book (book 5) I spent over 9.00 in ppc ads that resulted in 4 sales. The click thru to sale was 13%... which isn't bad. The point is, I earned only about $2, but spent over $9.00 to earn it (a loss of $7.00). The author doesn't explain how to choose affiliate programs in terms of cost vs. payoff. Anyone who reads this book will get some basic information, but before spending money on ppc advertising they'd be better off buying The Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords which does a better job explaining keywords, writing effective ads and managing campaigns.

I have read many long winded books on how to make your life rich and abundant. This is a short book and gets quickley to the point.
Simple to read and explains very clearly the steps you need to take. Tom Pauley's amusing little stories give his book, great credibility.

      I would heartily recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but could have been better!.......2007-07-11

I liked this book a lot, and it was very interesting. I especially liked the "assignment" of buying a .79 cent spiral notebook, and creating the lists of what you want in life. I still use the notebook, and refer to it often keeping it updated. The book could have been MUCH better, but sadly, the authors use it to pitch their $2,500 Quantum Selling and Quantum Marketing seminars!

      3 out of 5 stars Tithing--what it really means.......2007-06-12

Emmett Fox talks about tithing as giving a tenth of your joy, happiness, positive emotions, etc. to God. He suggests giving what you can, when you feel moved to do so. That sounds like a lot better way to view tithing, to me. God doesn't need your money--and this book even says not to ask the Universe for money.
I think some of this is a good exercise, but there are better sources for the same information, but everyone learns in different ways. I think Neville Goddard is better, in terms of explaining the deeper aspects of the Law of Attraction. Emmett Fox is more appealing to me. But, as a starter on this type of work, this book is OK.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars interesting romantic suspense .......2006-01-04

In Dallas, attorney Sean Jacobs informs his stepbrother Ethan Blacklock that the latter's estranged mother Margaret accidentally died when she tumbled down a set of stairs. Shockingly, an unknown schoolteacher at least to the family and servants Brenda Prentiss inherits the brunt of the multimillion dollar estate as long as she cares for the late Margaret's four beloved cats.

Before meeting the family, Brenda visits D'Alessandro and Walker Investigations because she believes someone tried to kill her; she explains abut the odd inheritance from someone she is sure she never met. Brenda and Ethan meet at what is now a mansion so that he can take what he wants of his late father's stuff as stipulated in the will; he takes few items none with any major monetary value as he explains he and his mother had a final falling out when he rejected law school to open up a landscaping business. Brenda wonders if he wants her dead as he inherits if she is out of the picture. As they each fight their attraction to one another, more attempts on her life occur.

WEALTH BEYOND RICHES is an interesting romantic suspense that grips the audience who wonder whether Ethan's attitude towards his mother's wealth and bitterness disguises his desire to obtain the funds at any cost. The audience will also want to know the logic behind an apparent stable Margaret bequeathing her fortune to a stranger. The cast is strong especially the lead couple and though an unlikely twist adds fun and intrigue the tale belongs to the series of mysteries that fans will want to know the answers.

              Book Description

This debut anthology features short fiction, novel excerpts, and essays that have won the James Tiptree, Jr. Award. Created in 1991 to honor the innovative fiction of Alice Bradley Sheldon (who wrote under the pen name James Tiptree), the Tiptree Award is presented to speculative fiction that explores and expands gender roles—and in the process touches on the most fundamental of human desires: the need for sex, for love, and for acceptance. This collection includes thought-provoking essays by Suzy McKee Charnas, Karen Joy Fowler, Ursula K. Le Guin, Pat Murphy, and Joanna Russ.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-08-08

It's been years since I picked up an S.F. book; this was an impulse grab on my way out of the library a few weeks ago. What I remember of S.F. is lots of stories centered around men in space, with lots of ridiculous, unpronounceable names for things and goofy deus-ex-machina "technologies." Most of these stories have neither of those elements. They are considered, accessible contemporary fiction, some of the best being written in any "genre" in the world today.

The excerpt from Matt Ruff's HOUSE OF SOULS excited me tremendously, and I'm now reading that book.

              4 out of 5 stars A good collection..........2005-05-14

James Tiptree, Jr. was one of my favorite SF authors back when I first was reading SF as a kid. Since I mostly read older books from the library, I wasn't "in" on the "big secret"--that James Tiptree was really "James Tiptree" aka Alice Sheldon. An award named after the author's nom de plume was created a few years ago and this is the first volume to fete the winners.

The award goes, it seems, to stories that explore gender roles. It is kind of a weird thing to build an award around, if you think about it. It isn't "stories that prominently feature women", for example: instead it is about stories in which gender or gender roles play a prominent part.

The stories presented here are uniformly excellent (which you would expect: the award winners are not in chronological order, so you'd expect them to pick the very best for the first volume).

The essays are less effective; a couple of them are familiar from other places (the Le Guin entry, for example, feels like pure filler--why didn't they just excerpt Disposessed for cryin' out loud?!?). The letter from Tiptree, reprinted here, is glorious, although, oddly it did make me wonder what she would have thought of the award. The introduction is slightly goofy. Suzy Charnas's essay is good, if a bit more inside baseball than I really needed.

Still and all: you're unlikely to pick up a better anthology this year. And the broader, quirky scope of the award keeps the volume from being tedious: there are lots of interesting gender roles to explore in SF and there is nothing mawkishly politically correct about the award winners (which one might reasonably fear going in).

              Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An anthropological account of a woman linguist .......2004-12-12

The Tiptree Awards honor fiction which explore and expand gender - and the award winners chosen for this first anthology reflect such notable masters of the art as Tiptree herself, Joanna Russ, Ursula LeGuin and other notable writers of science fiction and fantasy. From boys stolen from their homes to lead new wild lives in a strange world to an anthropological account of a woman linguist on another world, anticipate involving, gender-breaking stories which always offer the unexpected in plot and twist of action.

5 out of 5 stars groundbreaking, provocative, and hot.......2004-12-08

The Tiptree Award is given to speculative fiction (fantasy and science fiction) that pushes the boundaries of gender. The award was named for a writer (James Tiptree, Jr.) extolled for masculine writing, who was later revealed to be a woman (Alice Sheldon). The Tiptree bake sales were created to be an ironic source of funding for the award. Hence the tag line of this subversive anthology: "Sex, the Future, and Chocolate Chip Cookies."

In "Birth Days" by Geoff Ryman, a geneticist trying to cure homosexuality discovers reproductive freedom. It's a sweet, surpising and pointed story. Richard Calder's "The Catgirl Manifesto," is a faux-academic piece in which Lolita-like catgirls cause social havoc with their deadly allure -- sexy and creepy as hell. Ursula K. Le Guin weighs in with a characteristically wry essay, "Genre: A Word Only a Frenchman Could Love." She points out that Margaret Atwood's THE HANDMAID'S TALE is actually a science fiction novel, but that Atwood's publishers were terrified to bill it as such, given the reputation of the genre.

In a clever juxtaposition, three versions of the "The Snow Queen" fairy tale are included, inlcuding the original Hans Christian Andersen version in a new translation (not at all as you remember it!); "Lady of the Ice Garden" by Kara Dalkey, set in feudal Japan; and Kelly Link's "Travels with the Ice Queen," which has a distinctly modern (ok, postmodern) spin, and may be one of the best fairy-tale retellings I've ever read.

These excellent stories and essays are from the 2003 winner of the Tiptree Award (Matt Ruff for SET THIS HOUSE IN ORDER), and the short-listed selections (which are announced at the same time as the winner, and given almost equal billing). Other contributors include Karen Joy Fowler, Joanna Russ, Suzy McKee Charnas, and Pat Murphy.

This is a thoughtful, entertaining, and frankly long-overdue anthology. If you like sexy, challeging, and utterly captivating writing, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Wei Wu Wei Almost Says It All.......2006-02-23

I have been reading enlightenment literature for thirty years. Though awakening to the Real cannot be brought about through the written word, words can point the way. The words of Wei Wu Wei are without a doubt pointing in the right direction.

5 out of 5 stars The Removal of the False.......2004-10-11

Notions collected over a lifetime are put to question in this simple book. What is often held tightest is that which must be questioned the most. This book turns the reader back unto himself to sift through the numerous concepts, which have been gathered and ponder on their true validity. Each word contained within this book is precious.

5 out of 5 stars True spiritual classic in the Zen and Advaita traditions.......2003-12-31

Profoundly deep and clear at the same time, Wei Wu Wei may take some getting used to but the effort is well rewarded. His books from previous publishers sell for hundreds of dollars on the used book circuit. Sentient is providing a much appreciated service through these reprintings.
