            Adult Fiction Fantasy Adventure Published 1996, Part 1 of 2 ISBN # 0-9648402-2-7 5.5 x 8.5 Soft Trade 414 Pages

This book claims to be an African fantasy, a work of fiction based on the mythology and legends of the ancient Cushites and Nubians of Abyssinia (North East Africa) but, you won't believe it because it all seems just that real. It is engrossing and entertaining. A must have for the library and your state of mind, that is, if you want to be enlightened and uplifted, as well as entertained.

The story's action runs steady in all the races, and the adventure is ever changing and unpredictable. You won't be able to put this book down once you get into it, but it does take some getting into because you've got to learn the lingo, like "feeder" for woman, and "slave" for a child, and "hanging dangle" for an old man, get it?

The book has two main and seemingly separate stories, one based here in the near future and one from the far ancient past. It opens up in the House of Mandara with a kidnaped victim, Ebbie Farmer, a vanilla- fudge beauty, whose being forcibly indoc- trinated into a secrete society of world renown women called the Pagangenearchs - something like the Eastern Stars, with fewer secret hand signs and more determined to bring Africans back into their full glory.

There are a variety of fascinating characters in this first story surrounding Ebbie Farmer, like the elderly oracle, Cleopatra Mandara a'la Hedrin, a true queen bee who tends to be a little too dangerous for her age. She's the type of woman who'll make the most effeminate man dig down deep for some more manhood. Then there's Michael Blackamore, who has a real problem with having to stay chase during his initiation, and an even bigger problem with the homosex- uality in the history he must learn. But the one to watch out for is Feegarmardar, who I see as a lusciously dark and deadly mix of Pam Grier and Grace Jones, now you know that combination truly has the killer kiss. She's the Assistant Regent Ambassador and Special Agent to Ethiopia, who likes to tease men with her magnificent body as well as beat them down with it.

The ancient story, which is the much larger and definitely more alluring tale, is where we meet the real stars of the book: Shhaha, Mah, Odrak, Keishlee and Ramaa, all of whom I got to know and care for as if they were close friends. Mah and Odrak, who are at the focus, are two young students bound together in spiritual love and physical danger. Soul mates, who are also the last of three surviving apprentices of the deadly science of "blood-keeping." Under the tutelage of Shhaha, the clan's Keeper of the Blood, who can cure or kill with only the power of his voice, they must pass the deadly "Test of Blood" in order to save their clan from total extinction which Shhaha has foreseen.

Chosen by Shhaha to go with him on a long overdue journey to a "Great Sharing," a meeting of all the great elders, these five characters encounter a clan of mystical giant snakes, a wild dog tribe made up mostly of discarded children, a tribe of female warriors whose company they survive only because of Keishlee, who has to become one of them to keep the others from being killed. Later they run into another really interesting character, "She Who Has No Name," who I can't stop thinking of as Whoopi Goldberg, even though I'm sure this character is going to be one of the great villains.

The whole scene at the Kamituian Village where they met her is a turning point for the reader, because it is here that I began to understand some of the many clues Demon provides as to who these people are in real history. Loving history the way I do, the book, which was already a truly magical fantasy, now became an enticing historical mystery as well. I don't want to give anything away, but one of the easy clues is that Mah's name is Ham spelled backwards.

The book seemed like it was going to be a bit long at first, but once you get pulled into its totally realistic cultures and all its wonderful characters, it becomes more like a movie than a book. Demon's writing will transport you to another time and place, to a world so real and compelling that it will truly come to life around you. I was enraptured being at the lake of oil and meeting the human-like birds, the Great Mahs, and it was a real thrill to fight alongside the courageous women of Tuk Village, and even bargaining over the slimy spice seeds with the business like Obeys was one of the most hilarious scenes in the book, not to mention the seduction of the hermaphrodites and the black male nymphs of the Misty Mountains, and I was even enjoying the regrettable Timbutikata, but then before you know it your only a few pages from the end and you curse the author, promising yourself his head if he ends this story before reaching the Valley of Names, and he does, with an ending that means you have to buy another book. But trust me-you will buy it.

              Book Description

Daughter of a prominent nineteenth-century Maine shipbuilder, Cherish Winslow had a deep love for ships, the ocean -- and her father's apprentice, Silas van der Zee. Once his childhood companion in Haven's End, Cherish wished Silas could see she was no longer a girl in pigtails but a woman in love.

To Silas, Cherish was a beacon of light, illuminating his lonely life . . . yet he doubted a lowly apprentice could win the heart of such an elegant young lady. A stolen kiss brought a moment's hope . . . but he soon found himself tossed out on the street, with no job, no home, no chance of a future. In his darkest hour, Silas must find the strength to fight for his life -- and for his beloved Cherish.

              2 out of 5 stars Highly disappointing.......2007-03-30

I picked up this book with great excitement, only to be thoroughly let down. The plot was original, but very uninteresting and it seemed to go nowhere. Aside from that, the characters were also very poorly written. Silas was the only one in the story that I actually looked forward to reading about. Cherish to me was whiny and weak, and I found myself hoping she didn't win the love of Silas until she could change her spoiled ways. Her father did a complete 360 in the story, between paternal love and obsessive protection. He randomly over-reacted about Silas, which was not, in my opinion, part of his nature. The dialogue throughout the book was rushed and forced, the characters were extremely underdeveloped, and the end just left me unsatisfied. This one doesn't rank anywhere close to the author's first book, "WILD ROSE." There's such a drastic difference in the plot and characters that I'm somewhat leery to pick up the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Story with depth and emotion!.......2006-02-25

Lilac Spring is just as compelling as her two previous novels. This is the story of Cherish (daughter of a very successful boat builder in the small community Haven's End Maine) and Silas (her father's apprentice in the business). They are briefly introduced as children and then the story resumes as Cherish returns from her education as a young woman. She has loved Silas from childhood but Silas is very aware of his place in society and in their household. He has had an emotionally barren adolesence and really made his love of building boats his world (as it has been). Cherish has a strong faith in spite of her pampered childhood, she is impetuous, vivacious, a little spoiled but overall just innocent and loving. She expects Silas to share her faith since they've gone to the same church since childhood but in reality it is only head knowledge. Ms Morren very skillfullly matures these characters and creates a very interesting story. We also meet Capain Phelps and Ginny briefly from her previous book.

When CIA agent Chuck Rittersdorf and his psychiatrist wife, Mary, file for divorce, they have no idea that in a few weeks they’ll be shooting it out on Alpha III M2, the distant moon ruled by various psychotics liberated from a mental ward. Nor do they suspect that Chuck’s new employer, the famous TV comedian Bunny Hentman, will also be there aiming his own laser gun. How things came to such a darkly hilarious pass is the subject of Clans of the Alphane Moon, an astutely shrewd and acerbic tale that blurs all conventional distinctions between sanity and madness.

                Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Classic PKD, but not spell binding.......2007-01-14

Though this does have the PKD signature on it, the plot is not exciting. One of his classic characteristics is that you almost have to be mentally ill to fully understand his concepts. This is no exception. As most PKD fans know, PKD suffered from mental illness himself, and he used it as fuel to write.

3 out of 5 stars Stuck in The Middle With Lord Running Clam.......2005-06-11

After my latest fugue on Planet Phil, I discovered that I had not reviewed this one. First off, I don't think this is Dick's strongest work but is certainly emblematic. Frustratingly it makes it an ideal entry point for the novice PKD fan but certainly obscures what makes him unique. While not as clunky as "The Pennultimate Truth", I just don't feel that it is Phil firing on all cylinders. While the characters are Dickian, the connect is not as strong as a "Radio Free Abermuth" or a "Valis". It is almost no surprise that the alien, Lord Running Clam, is the most sympathetic character here. Running Clam is almost like the reader in that he is involved but not entirely bonded to the lead character. Now the ideal rating would be three and half as the constant reader of PKD can see that this as a step in the author's movement from world builder to philosopher. Each turn of the plot points towards a unique point of view that pushes SF towards a more personalized vision than a mere excercise in space opera. Admittedly while I found the texture of the plot more interesting than the usual "how is this going to end", I do recognise the cleverness of the construction. And it is certainly more engaging than the dry construction of "The World That Jones Made". Dick is, if not a dazzling stylist, a remarkably focused writer. His interests are crystaline and consistent. It is just here that it is smuggled inside a late 50s/early 60s SF novel. While a novel like, say, "Counter Clock World" is more consistent with later period PKD, this is certainly the breeziest of Phil's novels and much better written than some of his early pieces. So if you are going to read this just make sure to make it part of a double header. Perhaps team it up with "The Man in The High Castle" (A classic with a bit more heart) or "Now Wait For Last Year" (A more mind-melting traditonal SF work from the mid-period). Then make sure to follow up with something really great like the aforementioned "Valis" or "Ubik".

5 out of 5 stars Lord Running Clam and the Planet Sized Mental Home.......2005-03-02

Clans of the Alphane Moon was written in the same year as three other books by Philip K Dick after he peaked early in his career with the Hugo award winning - The Man in the High Castle, highly original in either being a very divergent type of sci-fi or a deviating political comedy. Dick is often cited as the best science-fiction writer who does not write sci-fi, but some of his works, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (Blade Runner) and UBIK, come across as more descriptive in the future they present, rather than ideology and dialogue driven. Clans of the Alphane Moon tends to be a situational environmental type of Dick presentation, rather than then latter, somewhat harder, but more heady science-fiction herbs that rely on dialogue and thoughts to tell their story. It is the environments the writer conjures up that makes this one of Dick's easier books to read, comprehend and probably enjoy.

Clans of the Alphane Moon is like an early version of UBIK, developing a series of events, rather than a full story, to engage characters with other characters, in the most interesting of environments, under the most oddest circumstances. It focuses on dysfunctional relationships from the persona and how that is reiterated through the cosmos like an expanding fractal, Dick himself was married five times, here a couple, in process of getting separated, end up on a Moon run by the offspring clans of various mentally ill people who once occupied a Terra owned hospital there. Each clan has a personality character disorder that affects their role in life, down to their functions in government offices and their own disturbed nuclear family (again we have the dysfunctional relationship problem), with the looming background crisis of a CIA backed pharmaceutical company invading the Moon, to reclaim all the citizens and lands because they are all genetically insane - only to be double-crossed by Terra's entertainment industry, homicidal CIA agents turned scriptwriters, walking talking telepathic slime moulds, RBX303s and government executive love date drink spiking. It is not as funny or as heady as UBIK but certainly is a lot crazier.

Alphane Moon has all the ingredients that you can expect in a good Dick novel but maybe not as much philosophy as it could have delivered on given such a rich premise, but then again Dick is always more suggestive and overall elusive in that he never delivers on it straight in a predictable way and is the reason why second guessing the next page will never turn out the way you expect making Alphane Moon as original as any of his other works with classic characters like CIA robot simulacra and slime moulds that regenerate by sporing when they die, a galactic mini-drama with an innovative design, although crazy in parts, that is exactly what the Alphane Moon is... but then again how do the people from Terra really compare?

This is one of Dick's earlier works and maybe a little more down the avenue of choosing a follow up Dick novel to one of his more readable classics like Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep or Ubik, where the reader is urged to go first, and certainly try to get in The Man in the High Castle to see how polarized this science-fiction writer is, the latter works towards the end of his career more metaphysical in nature as the writer descended into his own madness or genius (he believed an entity called VALIS was controlling him and even wrote a book about it).

I choose this after reading "The Simulacra" and will move onto the other novel he did that same year "Martian Time-Slip" next. See you there.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite Dick!.......2005-02-25

There are precious few books by Dick I haven't read yet, and I still consider this one to be my very favorite.

All of the classic, wonderful Dick themes are represented: Paranoia, conspiracy, maliciously evil women, simulacra, assassination attempts, and a telepathic slime mold from the planet Ganymede named Lord Running Clam, who may be the best Dick character ever written.

Of all Dick's books, this one made me laugh out loud and shake my head with amusement the most. I would recommend it to hardcore Dick fans and first time Dick samplers alike.

                5 out of 5 stars Dangerous book.......2004-12-15

Beware. If you have a slightly twisted sense of humour, reading this book could make you seriously addicted to Mr. Dick. It was the first of his I read, and I ended up befriending a second-hand book dealer just to get hold of some of his rarer books. Sad but true.
                You have been warned.

                                  Book Description

Faced with crisis, lack of direction, or just plain "stuckness," many congregations and their leaders are content to deal only with surface issues and symptoms—only to discover that the same problems keep recurring, often in different, and more serious, ways. In The Hidden Lives of Congregations, Christian educator and consultant Israel Galindo takes leaders below the surface of congregational life to provide a comprehensive, holistic look at the corporate nature of church relationships and the invisible dynamics at play.

Informed by family systems theory and grounded in a wide-ranging ecclesiological understanding, Galindo unpacks clearly the factors of congregational lifespan, size, spirituality, and identity and shows how these work together to form the congregation's hidden life. He provides useful tools for diagnosing and understanding how one's congregation fits into the various categories he names and suggests what leadership skills are necessary to get beyond the impasse of surface issues and help the congregation achieve its mission.

The Hidden Lives of Congregations provides one of the most far-reaching looks into the invisible nature of faith communities written in recent years. For seminaries and divinity schools, it provides a standard text for getting a solid start in congregational practices; for experienced pastors, it provides support for renewing ministry; for lay leaders and committees, it offers insight to deepening mutual ministry. Israel Galindo has written an indispensable manual that leaders will return to repeatedly for new wisdom and guidance

This book opened my eyes to a lot of the enfighting that you see in churches. It has also enhanced my thoughts about the spirituality of church and why they worship the way they do.

Israel Galindo's "Hidden Lives of Congregations" affords an excellent overview of the Christian church and its followers, diagnosing the cause and effect of the life, growth and attrition of churches in America. Its in-depth analysis of the mindsets of the average churchgoer, the clergy and the infrastructure of the church provides us with an essential profile of the movers and shakers that make the modern church the cornerstone of American society it is today. Yet we are introduced to the paradox as to how conformity to industrial paradigms result in the failed mission of the church in its purest form. This social phenomenon is explored in an informative and comprehensive dialogue that makes this a worthy addition to any Christian library.

The author leads us through an exploratory narrative as we trace the paths of ministers and their congregations who begin on the home church level, evolving into storefront ministries, growing into the need for their own church building, and finally expanding into property development to suit their advancing requirements. Only we find that the transition results in the church morphing into a mirror image of the secular corporation, requiring a board of directors to supercede the elders of the church in ministering to its greater needs. The pastor grows more detached from his teeming congregation, his leaders forced to spend more time administering to the needs of its members than pursuing its evangelical and community goals. As a result, the monolithic superchurch achieves corporate success as its profits soar, but ultimately becomes a failure to God and man.

"Hidden Lives" can be seen as an indictment of the consumer-friendly megachurch system that dominates the American religious scene today. The author depicts how idealistic ministers become discouraged and demoralized by the myriad of responsibilities thrust upon their shoulders, faced with exponential demands of their overgrown ministries. The book suggests a return to the apostolic vision of Pauline doctrine, the smaller church being more flexible and less encumbered as it pursues its simple mission to preach the Gospel to all nations. Providing a variety of social services in ministering to the needs of its followers is just one of the many excesses that hinder the church from its soul-saving mission. This book dissects the problem at its root causes and gives every clergyman the opportunity to avoid many of the pitfalls on the road ahead.

This is an excellent gift item for Christian workers and clergymen, as well as sociology buffs and casual readers alike. Don't miss out on this well-written, in-depth study; your home church will thank you for it.

Pastors are increasingly tempted to view themselves as high-powered CEOs. Wiersbe reminds them of the biblical model: shepherds to God's people. Practical and encouraging.

I'm using this book as a text to teach a class on pastoral care, and I love it! There is a myriad of books available today on what it means to be a pastor, ranging from titles bashing church growth techniques to works heralding the modern-day pastor as a church CEO. This book covers the Biblical basics of shepherding for church leaders and pastors, and covers them well. The author acknowledges a place for managerial skill, but he asserts that the primary role of a church leader/pastor is to shepherd the sheep.

                                  I recommend this book enthusiastically!

This is throwing money away on all these books.

The author knows very little about being a true Christian.

Spend your money on other things, but his books are stupid.

I found this book to be extremely helpful. As a victim/survivor of clergy sexual abuse, the book offered a critical understanding of the psychological dynamics of both personality and relationships that create at-risk environments for boundary violations to occur. The exploration of empathy and empowerment and the gift/burden of our unconscious and subconscious operatives are well done by the author. My recovery and healing is testimony to the powerful dynamic of empathy and empowerment when experienced as a healthy interaction complete with restorative qualities which then, in turn, offer insight into the evil nature of the abusive relationship. I recommend this book to anyone considering entering the pastoral ministry as a means of provoking introspection and reflection into one's motives and behaviors as a means of prevention of possible breach in the vows of sacred trust one is required to take in such a vocation.

Dr. Doehring, a member of the faculty of Boston University School of Theology and also the Danielsen Institute, is an intelligent, skilled and above all very conscientious and warm-hearted pastoral counsellor. She writes in a very clear style that anyone will be able to understand, and in a way that people can relate to. This book is highly recommended for those who want a non-technical work on counselling psychology from a Christian perspective. Look out also for a new book she is working on, which may be out in 2002.

Our world is full of hurting people. The Word of God is the answer but somehow attempts to apply Biblical principles to bring psychological healing have fallen short of the deeper needs of many of these hurting people. This has been true for several reasons. Most models of Biblical change have been limited to either confronting and demanding change, or acting and practicing new Biblical ways of doing things. These methods do not deal with the entire person: will, spirit, past experiences, mind, perceptions, needs, motivation, actions, and emotions. They do not take into account the complexity of the human heart and the interactions between its members. This book addresses these problems through the use of the "Train of Psychological Wholeness," a concept developed from Proverbs Chapter Three. It provides an understanding of a large number of these principles, a detailed method for developing counseling plans using Biblical principles, and counseling methods and techniques for their application in order to bring about dynamic psychological healing.

Readers of this book will benefit from insights and findings culled from the body of work that constitutes the growing field of formative spirituality. The Spirit, having granted us undeservedly the knowledge provided by formation science, anthropology, and theology, may use these pages to initiate changes in our lives that will shed more light on the entire process of human and Christian maturation. The work begun here will continue to be enriched and expanded at the Epiphany Academy of Formative Spirituality. What we teach is tested in reality by our faculty members, students, and graduates, working in many different centers of research, teaching, and practice.

This book provides detailed understanding of the three ways in which God guides us: spiritual self-direction, direction-in-common and one-on-one spiritual direction.

Common to all three is the clear theme, that since each of us have unique personalities, family of origin experiences and life situational needs, there is no one "right way" to seek guidance or direction from God. Yet, Muto warns that individuals often feel the pressure to conform their spiritual practices to that of others in order to have similar experiences or because others are more advanced than themselves. This is a danger in self-direction but even more so in direction-in-common and in one-on-one direction. As Muto says, "The question is: What is God's way for them?" 55

I learned the most from the sections on direction-in-common and one-on-one spiritual direction. Group spiritual direction is something that I definitely would like to pursue more of in our church since it helps facilitate honesty, models some of the ways that God is at work in the body and helps us to appreciate the different ways God speaks to the body and so encouraging the diversity of gifts and talents in the church.

As I seek to continue to be involved in one-on-one spiritual direction, Muto's book encouraged me to do more reading in the area of therapeutic counseling. This would help me to understand some of the problems people bring when they request spiritual direction and enable me to know when to refer people to trained therapists. Muto helped me to understand that if I am to be an effective spiritual director, I must work on establishing trust, give focused attention to what is really being said and to express an appropriate compassion (and yet maintain a detachment to avoid the development of unhealthy and co-dependent relationships. This entire last section of the books served as both an encouragement and a warning about offering spiritual direction to others.
