Book Description

Michele Wallace burst into public consciousness with the 1979 publication of Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman, a pioneering critique of the misogyny of the Black Power movement and the effects of racism and sexism on black women. Since then, Wallace has produced an extraordinary body of journalism and criticism engaging with popular culture and gender and racial politics. This collection brings together more than fifty of the articles she has written over the past fifteen years. Included alongside many of her best-known pieces are previously unpublished essays as well as interviews conducted with Wallace about her work. Dark Designs and Visual Culture charts the development of a singular, pathbreaking black feminist consciousness.

Beginning with a new introduction in which Wallace reflects on her life and career, this volume includes other autobiographical essays; articles focused on popular culture, the arts, and literary theory; and explorations of issues in black visual culture. Wallace discusses growing up in Harlem; how she dealt with the media attention and criticism she received for Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman, which was published when she was just twenty-seven years old; and her relationship with her family, especially her mother, the well-known artist Faith Ringgold. The many articles devoted to black visual culture range from the historical tragedy of the Hottentot Venus, an African woman displayed as a curiosity in nineteenth-century Europe, to films that sexualize the black body—such as Watermelon Woman, Gone with the Wind, and Paris Is Burning. Whether writing about the Anita Hill–Clarence Thomas hearings, rap music, the Million Man March, Toshi Reagon, multiculturalism, Marlon Riggs, or a nativity play in Bedford Stuyvesant, Wallace is a bold, incisive critic. Dark Designs and Visual Culture brings the scope of her career and thought into sharp focus.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing collection of essays..........2006-01-08

I read this collection of essays last summer, and I'm impressed with Wallace's balanced analyses of popular culture and cinema past and present. Wallace is an astute critic and scholar, but what astounded me were the early chapters that centered on her life. She should publish a memoir, as she has an acute ability to draw the reader into her personal life.
However, I do have one criticism. I do not like the way she handled bell hooks, and I'm not talking about Wallace's essays on the self-proclaimed diva of Black Feminism. In the early chapters, Wallace apologizes for writing the pieces on hooks, which undermines the excellent essays. The tone of Wallace's apology comes across as forced and insincere. bell hooks trashes everybody, and she has NEVER apologized or regretted a word she has put on paper. Just as Postcolonial critic Sara Suleri did a decade ago when she chastised hooks, Wallace should have stuck to her guns...Nonetheless, the essays on hooks are provocative, valid, and downright juicy.

    Book Description

Visual culture is all around us: television, dance, film, fashion, painting, sculpture, installation and fine art are only a few of its many faces. Feminist Visual Culture looks at feminist theory, the role of women, and the contribution of women artists to the world of visual culture. This substantial introduction provides an overview of visual culture and of the origins of feminist practice. In the volume's three sections--Fine Art, Design, and Mass Media--the authors discuss the visual media specific to that area, incorporating wider issues such as class, culture, and ethnicity. Each chapter is written by a woman working in a different field of visual culture. A topical and comprehensive introduction, Feminist Visual Culture will be a valuable tool for readers and students in women's studies, visual studies, and media studies.

      Book Description

Beyond the Frame rewrites the history of "Victorian" art to explore the relationship between feminism and visual culture in a period of heady excitement and political struggle. In this rich and challenging study, Deborah Cherry discusses painting, sculpture, photography, engravings, embroidery and comic drawings of the period, to build a picture of how artists participated in the social upheaval of the day. The author explores how political activities such as campaigning for or against women's rights or speaking out on sexuality intervened in the visual languages of the day to create challenging new images of women.

Laura Mulvey did not invent feminist film criticism, but her short piece "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" is a seminal essay, cited more often than almost any other single article on the movies. Mulvey brought psychoanalysis, the experience of pleasure, and the idea of the male gaze into the mainstream of feminist film criticism. Visual and Other Pleasures reprints her famous analysis along with other important essays on film melodrama, avant-garde cinema, the Oedipus myth, and directors Douglas Sirk, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Jean-Luc Godard. Unlike many academic critics, Mulvey writes with refreshing clarity. Arguments that in other hands might seem dense and thorny are both comprehensible and enlightening here. --Raphael Shargel

      Book Description

This edition of Laura Mulvey's first collection of essays contains a new introduction in which she re-assesses her essay 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema'. She argues that new technologies of film consumption have altered visual pleasure, its relation to narrative, and have thus affected theories of gendered spectatorship. In a new essay, specifically written for this edition, the author turns to the cinematic representation of the 'young modern woman' of the 1920s, suggesting that historical context also affects theories of visual pleasure.

      5 out of 5 stars The Beginning.......2001-11-24

Much of the work done over the past 25 years in feminist film theory has been in response to Laura Mulvey's "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema," which is included in this collection. Many essays, here, expand, refine or modify Mulvey's original polemic, while others introduce new topics in the visual arts.
Though "Visual Pleasure" is certainly not the last word in feminist film criticism, it is among the first. As so much work in the field is in response to this single essay, it is a must-read for anyone embarking on feminist film criticism. Though Mulvey's argumentation is weak, the ideas presented, here, gave birth to a fruitful avenue of critical pursuit.

          Book Description

Women’s Camera Work explores how photographs have been and are used to construct versions of history and examines how photographic representations of otherness often tell stories about the self. In the process, Judith Fryer Davidov focuses on the lives and work of a particular network of artists linked by time, interaction, influence, and friendship—one that included Gertrude Käsebier, Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange, and Laura Gilpin.

Women’s Camera Work ranges from American women’s photographic practices during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to a study of landscape photography. Using contemporary cultural studies discourse to critique influential male-centered historiography and the male-dominated art world, Davidov exhibits the work of these women; tells their absorbing stories; and discusses representations of North American Indians, African Americans, Asian Americans, and the migrant poor. Evaluating these photographers’ distinct contributions to constructions of Americanness and otherness, she helps us to discover the power of reading images closely, and to learn to see through these women’s eyes.

In presenting one of the most important strands of American photography, this richly illustrated book will interest students of American visual culture, women’s studies, and general readers alike.

This book should be given away as a promotional item. It is completely one sided and without much insight information. After reading it you know as much as before. It might be a good read for the Luis Vuiton zombies in Japan. For a business reader it is useless!

            5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-01-10

One of the most interesting books on fashion I have ever read. Marketing, sales and business aspects on how the brand expanded in Japan told by an insider. Read it!

5 out of 5 stars A lessons in intrenationalism. .......2005-12-20

This is a good read for anyone interested in Japanese culture. However, the real benefit of this book is that it gives a step by step layout for addressing marketing problems in Japan. Mr. Hata's solutions are clearly Japanese in origin but giving people good value and pride of ownership is good business anywhere, not just in Japan.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, How Luxury Brands Work in Japan Demystified.......2005-05-11

This is a must read for all marketers who are interested in Japan and Asia market. Hata-san clearly and succinctively told a great story about how the enviable success of LV in Japan came about. The story is being told as is with an elegant writing style. Hata-san's own personality came through, what a gentleman and a great leader! A great, easy read. All the self-professed marketing gurus who write those fancy, incomprehensible books, take note here! This book does not preach..it explains. The only regret is that I wish there were more pictures. Arigato-gozaimasu Hata-san.

5 out of 5 stars ARCHIE IN THE EVER-CHANGING 1960'S.......2005-06-21

If there is one era I associate most with Archie comics, it's the 1960's. When I was a kid, my oldest brother, who was seven years older than I, had a huge collection of Archie comics, all from the mid 1960's through the early 1970's. He had them in a big box in his closet and I would go in and read them over and over. More than any other era Archie comic followed all the trends of the 1960's as they briskly came and went. From Elvis and hot-rods to The Beatles, miniskirts, Nehru jackets and flower power. Reading Archie comics in the 1960's is truly a time capsule of that era. This volume begins with an introduction by one of the icons of the 1960's, Frankie Avalon. Frankie's introduction is more an ode to the 1960's than it is about Archie comics, but it's still nice to hear from a guy who is so identified with one particular era. In all this volume has over a dozen stories ranging from 1961 through 1969 and it's so interesting to see how the gang has been transformed from the big-band, bobby-soxer era to the psychedelic 1960's over the course of over twenty years.

My favorite stories in this collection include:

"Too Close for Comfort" Jughead and Archie are making fun of Betty & Veronica's tight fitting Slim-Jim pants until a dunk in a park water fountain finds the boy's pants shrunk to a very uncomfortable level of tightness.

"Bop that Beatle" is a Beatle-era story from 1964 as Beatle mop top wigs are all the rage. When Veronica sends one to Archie as a gift, he and Jughead think it's a pest and try to kill it.

"Board Game" Archie tackles the era of beach parties and surfing. Reggie is showing off his surfer skills to the girls making Archie jealous. Arch tries a crash course at surfing with disastrous results.

"Mini-skirt Madness" Yet another 60's icon is covered as the boys go ga-ga over the girl's new mini-skirts.

"Flower Power" from 1968 has Juggy turning into a hippie. Interesting in that going Hippie was dealt with as almost a monster-like transformation and something to be shown off as Veronica wants to Juggy to the Country Club for all her friends to see.

"The Time of your Life" shows true 60's influence as the gang plans a trip to a park for a picnic, throwing the park guards into a panic over what they think will be a marauding band of rambunctious teens.

"Ding a Ling" from 1969 is yet another fashion-oriented story as Reggie is showing off his new Nehru jacket, beads, and bell he wears around his neck. Archie counters him by showing up to the big dance with a cow bell!

Archie Comics has put out two volumes from both the 40's and 50's and I certainly hope they do so with the 1960's as well. To me it's the era that really reminds me of the comics. The ever-changing fashion styles and events always stayed current with the times. No era saw so many changes as the 1960's did and Archie moved right along and grew up as well.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting transition takes place........2004-08-04

An interesting transition takes place during the 1960's run of the 'Archie' comics series, namely a shift in its visual style. In the early 60's the artwork is still very much in the same vein as it was in the 1950's - each frame packed with detail and a overall high-quality, stylized look. From the midpoint of the 1960's and on the artwork seems to take a more economical approach with less detail, etc. that will come to define the look of 'Archie' comics in the 70's, 80's and on. With this point in mind this 1960's volume of the 'Archie Americana' series serves as an intersting example of the gradual loss of detail that the artwork took throughout the decade and on. The stories collected in this volume are also interesting in that for the first time 'Archie' comics refers back to real-life pop culture on a regualr basis. For example, the stories collected in this volume feature such cultural icons as, 'The Ed Sullivan Show,' Beatles wigs, Nehru jackets, the hippie movement, etc.

I was hoping for something a little more substantial from the description of this book, which turned out to be a slim volume at best. I was searching for some compendium of the Algonquin wits, and this was I'm afraid, about it! It is not without some merit, however dissappointing the selections are (small snippets - more anecdotal than anything else - representing the range of most of the members of the Round Table). It does offer a decent over-view of the prime members of the club with some literary tastes of their various and varying works. The playwrights are not that well represented, but some of the lesser know news reporters are. An appetizer waiting for a delicious feast to be compiled someday.

This is the best book out there about the roots, growth and history of the Round Table. Jim Gaines has done a remarkable job of presenting the colorful group. Packed with photos and illustrations, a must-have book for devotees of the Vicious Circle.

4 out of 5 stars Never Burned Brighter.......2005-06-24

The Algonquin wits were self-absorbed, self-congratulatory, alcoholic and mean. But we loved them so. We have never seen their like since, although a few attempts have been made to recreated their magic.

This is a great book about them - love 'em or not!
