Book Description

The story of a French military hero of the Napoleonic Wars, long assumed to be dead, tries to recover his fortune and former wife through the help of a famous Parisian lawyer. Colonel Chabert, a Napoleonic War hero supposedly killed in the Battle of Eylau, returns to Paris after a long convalescence to find his wife remarried, and his pension gone. He employs a young, well-known lawyer to at least reclaim his pension. It is a game of wits: first to convince the lawyer that he is who he says he is; secondly to get his wife to admit to his identity and thereby give up some of her wealth. Once the lawyer believes Chabert's story, the wife must be made to part with his pension...

5 out of 5 stars The best translation..........2004-05-10

...of a great Balzac novella. Ms. Cosman captures the rigorous, logical quality of Balzac's prose - most translators get lost in unidiomatic wordiness. This 100 page novella showcases the Master's comfort with legal matters, his profound understanding of "the fang and the claw" and features at its center the incomparable Derville, Balzac's great, recurring lawyer character. I usually recommend Pere Goriot for first-time Balzac readers because of the rich connections between that novel and many other Balzac works - but I am hard pressed to imagine a better one-course meal than this rendering of Colonel Chabert by Ms. Cosman. I certainly plan to read her version of The Girl with the Golden Eyes.

5 out of 5 stars TRAGEDY DISTILLED.......2003-10-08

One of the greatest novelists of all time, Balzac was most at home in the Paris of Post-Napoleonic Paris. In a time when the middle class was showing its strength and starting to reach towards the aristocracy, Balzac shows just how selfish and grubby and greedy humans can be in attaining and how treacherous they can be in keeping their all important upward mobility.

Colonel Chabert is a man disfigured in the Napoleonic Wars who was left for dead on a battlefield. After digging his way out of a mass grave, he finds that he has no legal right to his title or his massive estate. Nobody will believe his true identity. For ten longe years he goes about trying to communicate his plight to anyone who will listen. They only see a crazy bum, and his wife rebuffs his letters. She already has a new husband and kids. Finally Chabert is able to convince a lawyer named Dervilles to accept his case, namely that of reclaiming his title, lands, and wife. The problem is that noone is really interested in his life being resurrected. Most people would rather that he remained dead. So begins the ludicrous battle of a man against the law to prove his own existence.

This short but great novel, or novella, is a tragic take on the world's thirst for social status and the judgement by visuals that our society is only too guilty of to this day. If it walks like a bum, talks like a bum, it must be a bum. Colonel Chabert has such a hard time convincing people of his identity because of how they perceive him. It sounds echoes of Frankenstein in that a good man is reduced to a monster when all he really needs is love. The fact that even his wife wishes he were dead just drives home the isolated suffering of the book. As in all Balzac novels, you feel a world moving under the mantle of the book. The Human Comedy of Balzac is one of the crowning achievements of literature and ranks right up there with Shakespeare and Thomas Hardy.

5 out of 5 stars "the depths of the human heart.".......2003-03-09

"Colonel Chabert" is the story of a soldier--a great favourite of Napoleon's who is left for dead following the battle of Eylau. Chabert literally digs himself out of a mass grave and is nursed slowly back to health. Unfortunately, Chabert's severe head wound caused permanent memory loss, and it is years before Chabert clearly remembers who he is.

After fragments of his memory return, Chabert contacts his wife--unfortunately, she has remarried and is now the Countess Ferraud, and it is in her best interests that Chabert remain dead and forgotten and that she remain the sole wealthy recipient of the Chabert fortune. So she ignores the letters Chabert sends.

Desperately poor, in bad health, and nursing a growing sense of injustice, Chabert seeks out the services of an ambitious and fascinating young lawyer named Derville. Derville is intrigued with Chabert's story and decides that Chabert is either the victim of a terrible injustice or "the most accomplished actor" he has ever seen. And so Derville sets out to regain at least a portion of Chabert's fortune...

Balzac is one of my favourite authors, and I've read many of his works. "Colonel Chabert" is novella length, but it is better described as a sketch of a novel. For anyone trying Balzac for the first time, I recommend starting with either "Cousin Bette" or "The Black Sheep." "Colonel Chabert" is perhaps not the best Balzac novel to start with as it is certainly not a good example of Balzac's extraordinary talent, but the novella certainly serves nicely as a later supplement to Balzac's better novels. I have to say that the film version is actually even better than the novel--and it's usually the other way around. In the novel, Countess Ferraud is a grasping, selfish, pitiless ambitious woman--in the film, she is portrayed much more sympathetically. Also, the visual media of film allowed much greater scope for such scenes as the dead on the frozen battlefield--this was not conveyed with such power in the novel. Nonetheless, "Colonel Chabert" follows Balzac's favourite themes--greed and human motivation---displacedhuman

5 out of 5 stars Dead Men Do Tell Tales.......2002-05-27

Balzac, one of the greatest writers who ever lived, did not trip up with this one. I read it with great pleasure and conclude, as people so often say, that the movie based on the story did not equal the original. Ever the cynic (some might say 'the realist') Balzac portrays here the efforts of a noble-minded soldier, who rose from an orphanage to serve his country under Napoleon in Egypt and eastern Europe, only to reap the all-too-common fate of dedicated and true warriors---to be forgotten and ignored. Death (which he accepted) might have seized him, but he found a living death, a denial of his sanity and identity, as the reward of his service. Reported killed at the battle of Eylau, against the Russians, after a heroic action, the soldier literally crawls from his grave to a kind of shadowy survival. In his earlier life, Colonel Chabert had raised a woman to his own status, but now finds that she is unwilling to let others learn of her origins and does not want to recognize that he is, in fact, her long lost husband. Honestly thinking she was widowed, she married a highborn aristocrat who knew nothing of her humble beginnings.

The tale is one of greed, intrigue, loyalty and disloyalty. As usual, Balzac manages to cast a light, pitiless and bright, on every rotten corner of the human condition, while offering a few inspiring examples in contrast. Every detail of a lawyer's life in 19th century Paris is scrutinized, every glimpse of urban dairyman or elite country squirehood rings true. No wonder I admire him so much, no wonder I have no hesitation in urging you to read COLONEL CHABERT and any other volume of Balzac you can lay your hands on.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Translation of a Masterful Story!.......2001-11-29

Carol Cosman's translation of Balzac's French 'Colonel Chabert' into the English has been very effective here- she does not input her own interpretations and seems to have a good handle on Balzac's natural, concise wording style.

The story itself is fascinating. In a nutshell, it focuses on a military man who is essentially erased from society, and the tribulations and insights he has from this 'non-existant' state as he tries to re-establish himself. Not only is this a witty and profound social commentary, but an entertaining twist which just keeps twisting.

In reading other's reviews of this short masterpiece, it seems as if many people have missed the meaning of the finale. While it is indeed a very enigmatic ending, it is not as lugubrious or fatalistic as most believe. What happens is that Colonel Chabert, in essentially having his old identity annihilated, becomes enlighted. In the ultimate destruction of his ego he becomes free. This is the magic finale which Balzac labors so hard, and so majestically, to set up in the plot.

This tome is very impressive, and relatively short (just over 100 pages) for those new to Balzac who want a nice, piquant appetizer. Balzac is one of the most brilliant French fiction writers of all time! He is a giant, and in 'Colonel Chabert', he weaves another illustrious stitch into his tapestry the Comedie Humaine.

Book Description

A vital part of Balzac’s La com&#eacute;die humaine, this radiant novel recounts the story of a disenfranchised hero of the Napoleonic wars. Foreword by A.N. Wilson.

Left for dead on the battlefield of Eylau, Colonel Chabert has spent years in an asylum as an amnesiac. The novel begins as he returns to the life he left behind: only to discover that, in his absence, his entire life—family, society, identity—has changed. With Napoleon deposed, France’s aristocracy has returned to power “as if the Revolution never occurred,” and believing Chabert to be dead, his wife is now married to a count. Sickened by her pretense not to recognize him and by the titled society that spurns his former meritorious deeds, Chabert vows to recover both his money and his reputation. Honor&#eacute; de Balzac (1799–1850), one of the greatest writers of 19th–century France, is the author of La com&#eacute;die humaine, a monumental cycle of ninety–one interconnected novels.

4 out of 5 stars Short but Great.......2004-08-03

This short novella by Balzac is pretty fun. It is a great illustration of the changes in French society and those who were left behind. It also is an insightful examination of the aftermath of Napoleon, nobility, the legal system, and the economy. It is a quick read and quite enjoyable. If you feel that Balzac's other works are unapproachable, I would suggest starting here and diving right in.

4 out of 5 stars A Balzac Gem.......2004-05-06

Dead heros are expected to remain dead, in this Balzac gem, for they are far more profitable that way to the many who have benefitted from their deeds. The once magnificent Colonel Chabert returned from the common grave, into which he had been flung after leading his infamous calvary charge at the Battle of Eylau, finds only a well meaning (tho settlement share seeking) trial attorney to aide him in one last battle against a society that wishes him gone. Spurned by his re-married wife, once a near prostitute and now a moralizing aristocrat, and robbed of his fortune, Chabert's pre-mature resurrection is a painful one. Filled with characters human, all too human, Balzac paints a painful world with the deepest of sympathies. General self-interest prevents us from contemplating for too long upon the sacrifices that have placed any of us where we stand; Balzac forces us to remember, forgives us to forget once more. For those unfamiliar with the story, it is best advised to read A.N. Wilson's forward and Andrew Brown's introduction after finishing the book. Breezing in at a quick 83 pages, Colonel Chabert is a fine entry into the greater world of Balzac's Comedie humaine.

For Lady Averyl Campbell was no biddable maiden, but an alluring, strong-willed beauty who would not be cowed by his dark moods and smoldering anger. Such a powerfully written story! You will applaud the heroine's strength and feel for her weaknesses. You will grieve for the hero's hurt and cry for the proof of his love for his wife. This story truly touched my heart! A very satisfying second story in the trilogy....I can only hope Kieran's story is half as good!

5 out of 5 stars This book and this series keeps me enthralled!.......2000-12-09

His Stolen Bride kept me involved from the battle-torn first page to the tender last page. Immediately, we see the three "Brothers" fighting a battle against our hero Drake's enemies, the Clan Campbell. When is father is murdered before Drake's eyes, he learns in his father's dying breath that his own half-brother, Murdoch, is responsible. Then Drake is accused of the murder and brought back to Scotland, where he endures Murdoch's terrible torture for months, until his "brothers" Aric and Kieran can free him. After gaining his freedom, Drake seeks revenge against his half-brother by abducting Averyl Campbell, the bride Murdoch must take in order to fully inherit the title and monies left to him by their father. Drake intends only to prevent Averyl from marrying Murdoch, but he is not prepared for her incredible determination to marry Murdoch. She needs his money to save her people from starving and Drake's plans means people she's known all her life will suffer. Drake is also not prepared for his reaction to Averyl as a woman. Nor can Averyl understand her attraction to a MacDougall fiend willing to rob her of her entire future.

The depth of these characters astounded me! Averyl is a woman we can all relate to. Many of us want something in life and often feel hampered by fear. Slowly, Drake cures her of her worst insecurity, the belief she is homely. And Averly helps Drake to see that what his parents shared was a bitter enmity, not love, and she does it by showing him such selfless devotion, it made me cry.

Murdoch is a truly evil villian, but ultimately motivated in his own twisted way. And while seeing Aric again and getting glimpses of the intriguing Kieran were fun, Drake and Averyl took center stage. Their sexual tension was potent, their intense emotions even stronger. I was so wrapped up in their developing relationship! The ending was a true surprise and kept me on the edge of my chair until nearly the last page.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this book. I also can't wait for His Rebel Bride!

He Would Stop at Nothing to Get What He Wanted...

Determined to succeed, Nicholas Blum leaves his beloved family to work for a shopkeeper in Pennsylvania. His stay won't be long, though, for once he proves himself he plans to return to his beloved North Carolina Moravian community to marry the golden sweetheart he's entrusted to his younger brother's care.

The last thing Nicholas wants is a female taskmaster who bosses him by day and invades his dreams at night -- no matter how lovely petite Abbigall Till may be. And Abbigail, the shop owner's spinster daughter, certainly doesn't need a big attractive man like Nicholas upsetting her shop and wreaking havoc with her heart.

Then Nicholas gets some shocking news -- his intended bride is to marry someone else. As he races home to stop the wedding, Nicholas is haunted by thoughts of the sweet, stubborn wren he's left behind. Abbigail too feels an aching despair over losing the man she belatedly realizes she loves. Will the strength of their love survive, or has their only chance at happiness been stolen forever?

5 out of 5 stars A Historical Romance with Real History.......2000-05-05

I really enjoyed this book. It portrays the Moravian community of North Carolina in great detail, while never losing sight of an engrossing plot featuring Nicholas Blum, who needs to grow up, and Abbigaiil Till, who needs to grow out--out and away from the father who has been running her life.

There is a great secondary romance as well, between Nicholas' brother and the woman Nicholas thought he was in love with once upon a time. The Blum family was interesting enough that I plan to go back and read Stanton's first book, WILD INDIGO, and I'm hoping for more books set in this time period and place.

                  5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......1999-12-17

His Stolen Bride was a wonderful follow-up to Wild Indigo. Nicholas is a warm and honorable hero, and the history was beautifully done. Ms. Stanton's stories are never sappy, but always touching. This is the best romance I've read this year.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Historical Romance.......1999-12-06

Unlike many of the historical romances I read, in "His Stolen Bride," Judith Stanton has used her setting - the Moravian community of Salem, North Carolina, in 1795 - to shape her story and the actions of her characters.

The hero, Nicholas Blum, is something of a square peg in a round hole: an energetic, charismatic man in a society that values restraint and conformity. Sent by the community to Bethlehem, PA, to learn how to be a shopkeeper, Nicholas finds himself thinking more and more about his employer's daughter, Abbigail Till, while still considering himself betrowthed to Catherina Baumgarten, back in Salem. When he learns that Catherina has been betrothed to his younger brother, Matthias, Nicholas' impetuous reaction precipitates a crisis.

I found Nicholas an unusually interesting hero, both because of his imperfections and because of the conflict between his natural character and the constraints imposed by the community he loves. Abbigail was a feisty heroine, if a bit short for my taste...why can't we have a few tall heroines?...and the setting was memorable.

                  5 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable!.......1999-12-04

Another great romance novel from Judith Stanton. I'm very particular about romance: I can't tolerate dishrag heroines, obnoxious heroes, or contrived plots. Abbigail and Nicholas were perfect. If you like great storytelling about intelligent, passionate, funny people, check out this book.

I find these books very arousing. Woman need to know that they are wanted but also to serve. In these books women get both, pleasure from pleasing and pleasure from the men, they make them beg for it to the point that they will just submit. Men could take a few pointer from these books in that pleasure department

Doreen, a shy librarian who secretly practices bellydancing between the stacks after hours, is kidnapped by slavers from the wild planet of Gor. Somehow frozen in a state resembling the Hyborian Age of Robert E. Howard's "Conan" books (and every sword and sandal tale ever told), Gor forces its men to become warriors while the women become "living jewels of desire". On that "wild counter-earth", enslaved Doreen's floorwork makes her the local star, even though (as with all slaves) her individual situation approximates a souvenir brought back from a long trip, like a switch-comb, or one of those novelty pens. Whereas modern bellydancers stress their art as liberating and empowering women - that images of slave girls in gauzy skirts performing for men is just a Hollywood myth - Gor creator John Norman buys into that "myth" completely: Doreen's dancing really is an act of submission set to rhythm. Driven into exile by an un-wanted competitor, Doreen finds herself in the forefront of war between competing city-states on Gor. For reasons not made quite clear, Doreen's dancing makes her a crucial factor in a massive Gorean civil war - but she remains too much of a slave to exploit that position.

I'm ashamed to admit I read "Dancer" - not ashamed because of the book's purportedly hot subject matter, rather the opposite: "Dancer" is long, pedantic and boring, with no payoff. There's little excitement to be found in the brutal treatment typical of slaves in "Dancer" which is little better than that given to animals. This doesn't bode well for Gor's male population either. (Gor is supposed to be a wild and adventurous version of Earth, but Gorean men manage to go to extremes for a pitifully shorter and less erotic coupling than paler and weaker Earthmen would aspire to.) Not even the author's emphasis on bellydancing - which he assures us really is about female submission - seems to bring out its sexier side.

But the worst conceit is Doreen herself. In Norman's prose, Doreen is meant to stand in for all modern women - outwardly liberated, educated and assertive, a destroyer of men and manhood; on the inside, entirely submissive, passionate and dependent on male power. Enamored with the idea of those days of yore (when women were women), Norman crafts a tale of a modern womanhood's descent into submission, with Doreen leading the fall. The problem is that Doreen is so transparently weak from the outset, that it's impossible to imagine her as a convincing modern woman at all - the only reason we have to think that Doreen is a modern anything is because she says so, repeatedly. (When Gorean scouts first encounter Doreen, their leader rhetorically asks her if she's a "modern woman". If shy Doreen is the Gorean idea of a modern women who "destroy men", the rest of Earth's women are safe.) Because she's already a slave waiting for her chains on page 1., Doreen's story of submission is pretty much over as soon as it starts, and "Dancer" discards the plot element of "transition" critical to any tale of fantasy. About the only transition Doreen achieves by the story's end is that she can now openly refer to bellydance by that name, and not "ethnic dance", which connotes PC pretension. Norman's error is in identifying modern women by their intelligence alone rather than strength of character, which says more about him than his bellydancing anti-heroine. Doreen is smart - her slave visions are out of library books and not movies - but submits to the slave collar with little problem. Worse, because she's smart and submissive, Doreen never becomes an interesting character, as she calmly describes the ordeals of being a slave almost as if they were occurring to someone else, and that "other" person doesn't seem worth Doreen's efforts. I've heard all of the canned diatribes about white male wish fullfillment, and this book ironically debunks every one of them - there's nary a word here to satisfy anybody's wishes. For anybody considering spending their hard earned cash to get "Dancer" on eBay, consider this your warning.

Doreen Williamson appeared to be a quiet shy librarian, but in the dark of the library, after hours, she would practice, semi-nude, her secret studies in belly-dancing. Until, one fateful night, the slavers from Gor kidnapped her. On that barbarically splended counter-Earth, Doreen drew a high price as a dancer in taverns, in slave collar and ankle bells. Until each of her owners became aware that their prize dancer was the target of power forces---that in the tense climate of the ongoing war between Ar and Cos, two mighty empires, Doreen was too dangerous to keep. DANCER OF GOR is a John Norman bonus novel---an erotic fever-pitched novel of an alien world where men were all-powerful and women were living jewels of desire. Good for those who wish to learn of kajirae dancing & a pleasant read by all means.

John Norman fell down with players of Gor which while godd was not great I have read all 26 books and found that there is a 27 out but not in print and unobtainable????

Dancer centers around the story of a young lithe librarian of Earth who is brought to gor by Kurii Slavers. The start of the book follows her search for truth and capture on Earth by Teibar of Ar.

On her arrival on Gor she is sold to a paga tavern and the owner finds her of interest as a dancer for his customers. She makes friends and enemies and through the work of a jealous rival is stolen and travel across Gor constantly chased and captured til finally she meets Teibar once again and realises that she has loved him from the moment she met him on Earth.

A love story, a bondage treatise, A great adventure as with all Gor books They cover many areas and as with all Gor books should be taken as what they are Fiction, Science fantasy.

This is one of the best in the series and recaptures the Mood of the earliest books perfectly. Ten out of ten (10/10)

As the bloody tide of war spread over Gor, Tarl Cabot, outcast by the Priest-Kings, became deeply enmeshed in the military combat between the empire of Ar and the invaders from Cos. His fate would depend upon which proved victorious in the coming confrontation at Ar's besieged river port. And it looked like Tarl himself might prove the deciding factor that would tip the scales of destiny for one side or the other... With Renegades of Gor, all the complexity and intrigue of John Norman's saga comes together to create an adventure replete with danger, excitement, and romance in the unforgettable realm of Gor---where courage remains meaningful, and pride and honor have never been forgotten.

In the midst of some wordy Norman novels comes "Rengades of Gor". Action from start to satisfying finish. Our hero very much himself and doing things the way he does them because he IS Tarl Cabot. All of this set amidst the seige of Ars Station, with Norman providing the the well researched details his books have been known for. Personally, I rank this one right up there with Nomads, Raiders, and Explorers. Set among a long winded series ... Renegades is a return to the glory days.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Book, Addresses the Issues.......2004-05-11

As the pastor of a church with an average attendance of 200, our church board decided that it was time for us to consider hiring a second pastoral staff member. We had little idea of what to look for in a second staff member. So I purchased this book to find some direction, and I was not disappointed.

McIntosh offers some clear opinions that were helpful and well reasoned. Ideally, the second staff member should be someone very different from the senior pastor. The idea is to compliment him, not replicate him.

The first four chapters touched on this subject. He did seem to lean too much for my liking upon the opinions of Lyle Schaller (who writes from a mainline denominational viewpoint; Schaller knows his stuff, but there are significant differences between the needs of a typical mainline church and a church in an evangelical denomination or an independent evangelical church; conservative churches generally tend to be more active and pastors are less like chaplains but more creative and aggressive than their liberal counterparts, hence they need additional staff earlier). McIntosh does not seem to communicate this distinction (of course he may just disagree with me:).

The book's title and subtitle truly communicate the nature of the volume. It deals with two distinct subjects: finding the right staff member(s),which occupies the lesser portion of the book, and working with and nurturing staff, the majority of the book.

The latter part virtually ignores staffs with two or three pastors, but assumes a large church format. Okay, you can't make everyone happy. But I still did not like that (there, I feel better).

Although I skimmed through the latter section, it did seem to offer advice that could be adapted to smaller situations. You will enjoy the book greatly if you are a staff or board member from a congregation with a large staff; if you are simply looking for good advice about what to look for in a second staff member, you will find the first few chapters quite relevant but will probably not finish the book.

All in all, a good book.

5 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Volume.......2003-04-11

This book wasn't exactly what I was wanting, but it will undoubtedly be helpful for many pastors and church leaders facing a multi-staff situation for the first time. McIntosh offers an excellent overview of the rationale for having more than one staff person, and the pitfalls to avoid in hiring additional staff. For anyone leading a church from a single staff to multi-staff ministry, this book is not one to miss. The graphs and tables he offers are particularly insightful.

When I purchased this book, I was looking for an aid to keep a multi-staff church moving smoothly, not something to start it effectively. McIntosh's work is very weak in the help it offers to senior pastors who are looking for insights into better leadership of existing staff. If you want that kind of volume, then look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and extremely useful........2001-11-27

This book is an easy read and yet is packed with useful and informative material. My copy is now dog-eared on almost every other page as I marked the key points to share with colleagues and to follow-up. The contents may be common sense and obvious if you are a church consultant or have many years experience in managing church affairs, but they can also be viewed as being insightful and brilliant to those of us new to this challenging topic. I highly recommend this book to every board and staff member of a church, whether you are considering hiring a new staff member or simply want to do more/better with those you have. This book will help you hire better, manage your existing staff better and make the most of the volunteers you have to support your staff (including board members). The advice in this book would cost thousands of dollars from a consultant and you can get it for about $10. A heavenly deal!!!
