After three novels which centered around gastronomic pleasures, Joanne Harris's Coastliners focuses on more astringent joys. Sea, gritty sand, and adverse weather conditions replace Chocolat, Blackberry Wine, and Five Quarters of the Orange. Set on a small, blustery fishing island off the coast of France, it tells the story of Mado, a young woman who returns to her childhood home to find the local community torn apart by family feuds, bad tides, and murky political machinations.

Passionate, stubborn Mado, whose "head is full of rocks," tries to save the livelihoods of the villagers of Les Salants by urging them to work together to save the beach from erosion, both natural and man-made. The villagers, written with endearing panache by Harris, are an eccentric, curmudgeonly bunch, who eventually cooperate with the help of Flynn, a charismatic stranger with a shady past. He's not the only man of mystery in Mado's life; her father, taciturn Grosjean, has a secretive heart that's as "prickly and tightly layered as an artichoke," and local, wealthy businessman Brismand also seems to be hiding something. Mado does her best to unravel these mysteries, while attempting to keep a hold on her own sense of self in the claustrophobic, close community. It's not only the shore line that takes a buffeting. The villagers and the island are so vividly described that it's impossible not to become engrossed in Mado's story. Coastliners is a book about longing to belong, and Joanne Harris charts that emotional voyage compellingly. --Eithne Farry, Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

Mado has been adrift for too long. After ten years in Paris, she returns to the small island of Le Devin, the home that has haunted her since she left.

Le Devin is shaped somewhat like a sleeping woman. At her head is the village of Les Salants, while its more prosperous rival, La Houssinière, lies at her feet. Yet even though you can walk from one to the other in an hour, they are worlds apart. And now Mado is back in Les Salants hoping to reconcile with her estranged father. But what she doesn't realize is that it is not only her father whose trust she must regain.

"Joanne Harris writes fiction that engages every one of the senses: reviewers called Chocolat "delectable" and Five Quarters of the Orange "sweet and powerful." In her new novel, she takes readers to a tiny French island where you can almost taste the salt on your lips. The island, called Le Devin, is shaped somewhat like a sleeping woman. At her head is the village of Les Salants, while the more prosperous village of La Houssinière lies at her feet. You could walk between the towns in an hour, but they could not feel farther apart, for between them lie years of animosity. The townspeople of Les Salants say that if you kiss the feet of their patron saint and spit three times, something you've lost will come back to you. And so Madeleine, who grew up on the island, returns after an absence of ten years spent in Paris. She is haunted by this place, and has never been able to feel at home anywhere else. But when she arrives, she will find that her father - who once built fishing boats that fueled the town's livelihood - has become even more silent than ever, withdrawing almost completely into an interior world. And his decline seems reflected in the town itself, for when the only beach in Les Salants washed away, all tourism drifted back to La Houssinière. Madeleine herself has been adrift for a long time, yet almost against her will she soon finds herself united with the village's other lost souls in a struggle for survival and salvation. Joanne Harris is the author of Five Quarters of the Orange, Blackberry Wine, and Chocolat, which was nominated for the Whitbread Award. Half French and half British, Harris lives in England.

4 out of 5 stars Images, feelings, and relationships in sure hands.......2007-06-21

This work by the author of Chocolat, which I thoroughly enjoyed and was my impetus for picking up this book, brings several similar themes here. Among them are life in a small town, family relations, and the role of a good bright woman who is an outsider (in this story, a local who is returning after time in the big city and so has lost much of her insider status). After having lived in Paris with her now deceased mother, Mado returns to the French island of her birth, small enough to harbor two communities that are fierce rivals. The human focus is largely Mado's relationships with her family and the neighbors as well as the business leader of the rival community, Brismand, who owns its hotel. Also deeply involved is another outsider, Flynn, who is light-hearted and extremely mysterious. When Mado's community, Les Salants, is threatened by developments in rival La Houssiniere, Flynn leads them in response. Sort of. The citizens of Les Salants rally, but Flynn's role becomes murky. The relations of the people are foremost here, and nature, personal histories, community rivalry, and religion (superstition?) play roles also in how the characters relate. Harris' writing is vivid in both the images and feelings she elicits, seemingly effortlessly. Mado is a rich and deep character, complex, real, and enjoyable. The events ring lifelike and make for a very pleasurable read in Harris' gentle and capable hand. Read it. You'll be glad you did.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Beach Read.......2007-05-30

The smell of sea and rotting fish, eroded beaches void of life, decaying sea cabins covered with moss, crabby neighbors, a distant father, and a mysterious, uncertain lover- defiantly not your perfect vision of a homecoming welcome. Yet this is what the main character in Joanne Harris' novel "Coastliners" receives when she returns to her childhood village of Les Salants on the island of Le Devin; and ironically, this is all she needs. Madeleine (Mado) Prasteau is a passionate, stubborn, artistic, and driven woman. She is determined to revive the small village which is being torn apart by ancient family feuds and a growing problem of beach erosion. However, the situation in Le Salants is only the secondary part of her worries; Mado's father GrosJean Prasteau is a distant, withdrawn, and embittered man. Driven into seclusion when Mado and her mother leave the island for Paris ten years ago, GrosJean has fallen into a mental decay with the years- much like the physical decay of the island he lives on. Resolved to help both her father and the quarrelsome community, Mado finds help in the charming, handsome, and mysterious character of an Englishman named Flynn. Together they bring a new sense of camaraderie to the villagers and to Mado's detached family. But when a Flynn's murky past comes into full view his identity might shatter his relationship with Mado and the very existence of Les Salants.

Though this novel is not as strong as her best selling "Chocolat", Joanne Harris' "Coastliners" still contains a good plot and determined characters that face some type of adversity. Filled with exceptional images of the sea and details of life on a small fishing island, "Coastliners" will definitely have a different, edgy, and more robust feel than the rest of Harris' novels. It's mysterious and often cryptic characters will catch your attention immediately and keep you reading, hoping to find the secrets they house within themselves. "Coastliners" is a good novel for a light-summer-beach-read (you could probably finish it in two days), but do not expect to find the literary richness found in "Chocolat".

These are the only two setbacks I found in the novel...
First I was a little disheartened to find no cooking aspect in this novel. I really enjoy Harris' creativity with recipes in her other novels and I think they are a great and defining characteristic of her literary style. I found in "Coastliners" that Harris was more concerned with imagery of the sea and sea life than the many delicious recipes that contain sea creatures.
My second complain about the novel is that it tended to ramble on in certain sections, leaving me slightly disinterested. Harris' use of multiple characters and situations was excellent because it gave the story a true-to-life feel. But it takes time and space to develop each character to fruition, and many times you have to sacrifice something to do this aspect justice. This resulted in the novel's tendency to drift off a bit and to loose track of its main plot and purpose. A great example of this is during the last 60 or so pages of the novel the drama of Flynn's identity and mysterious connection with Mado's father and the towns rival Brismand is made. At best this entire situation was solved within three very small, very complicated chapters. I think this would have been a great characteristic to develop withing these three characters throughout the novel, since during those few pages it was a very IMPORTANT part of the plot. Instead, it seemed as if Harris threw this in at the last moment as an after thought or was too busy developing everything else about the characters and forgot this important aspect.

Still this novel was a good read and I recommend it to any fan of Joanne Harris' writing who is willing to experience a different side of the author or to anyone who enjoys reading about life at sea.

3 out of 5 stars genuine souls..............................2006-05-24

In a story that is set on a small island, a young woman returns home after the death of her mother, to try to understand her father's life and come to terms with her own past and future.
The story takes place amidst a rivalry between the villages at opposite ends of the island. It seems that ultimately one village will thrive, but only at the expense of the other. This seems to be the case between Mado and her sister also.
The villagers are pitted against each other generation after generation in a manner that is mirrored by the characters, Mado's father and his brother, Mado and her sister, husbands and wives and even the religious become opponents to each other.
The descriptions of the coastline, the sea and the villages is so real and clear you can feel the salty breezes. The people are genuine souls that can move your heart.
As the truth about Mado's life is realized, she sees that there is an important reason that everything returns to it's beginnings and that lessons in life will be repeated until they are truly learned.

It's rare that I don't finish a book. I realized after getting 1/3 of the way through it that I just couldn't get interested in the characters. Took it back to the library.
A friend of mine who also reads a lot had the same experience.
Harris' other books were much better.

5 out of 5 stars Sands of change........2005-06-03

COASTLINERS, by Joanne Harris.

Once again, Joanne Harris takes us to a small French community. This time, on Le Devin a small Breton Island. She introduces us to several inhabitants of this island, where life has remained constant for hundreds of years. Two memorable characters, are the Carmelite nuns, Soeur Therese and Soeur Extase. Their role in the story is a small one. Yet, as with so many of her characters, Joanne has the ability to make them memorable.

The central character, though, is Mado. She is a local girl. After a ten year absence and quite unprepared for the changes that have taken place (as well as the changes still taking place) she returns to this sea side village She quickly learns that Brismane, a local entrepreneur is buying up property all over the island. It is with a certain amount of trepidation that Mado realises that her own family home is one of these under threat.

For centuries this little island has been split into two factions. There is little love lost between the inhabitants of les Salants and on the other side of the island, la Houssiniere. It is this thread of the story that adds to the tension. In fact, COASTLINERS does have a slightly harder edge to it, than some of the previous Joanne Harris novels. And this, for me, added an extra element of enjoyment.

Mado is soon resolved to restore the dying community to which she has once again found herself becoming a part of. The theme of `everything eventually returns to Le Devin` is very relevant here. Before long she has become attracted to Flynn. He is a drifter who for some (at first) unknown reason has stayed on the island. She enlists his help to save her stricken community.

It is here, that the true element of the story begins to emerge. The tide has been diverted by a jetty built into the bay of Immortelles by the local people of la Houssiniere. Consequently all the fine sand has washed away from les Salants to be deposited onto the beach head of La Houssiniere. Because of this, La Houssiniere has now become an established and prospering sea side resort. While, on the other hand, La Salants is languishing. Until Mado hits on an ingenious plan, to alter this.

There are some lovely little sub plots to this seaside tale. One of them being the `miraculous` restoring of the statue of the local Sainte-Marine. Could the wily and attractive Flynn have had something to do with this? Or, as most of the inhabitants of Le Devine would like to imagine, is it really a miracle?

Apart from her crusade to save her part of the island, Mado also has to cope with Grossjean her emotionless and aged Father. How she would dearly love to claim his affection. However, with the arrival later on in the novel of her sister, Adriene, it would seem this is never going to happen.

So the story, like the sands of the island, undergoes several changes. Towards the end, it is left with certain threads of storyline needing to be completed. It is here, that I was happily and pleasingly surprised. Towards the ending of the story, Joanna provides one or two extra twists and turns. And as to the actual ending itself. I thought it was splendid. But to give anything else away, any clue or indication would be to spoil, a thoroughly entertaining and in places, exciting read. And that, I would not do!

Footnote. A thoughtful map of the island of Le Devin is provided in the front of the book.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT READ!.......2007-06-06

    From Back Cover:
Greek tycoon Sebastian Kouros thinks he knows all about Rachel Long: as far as he's concerned, she's a scheming money-grabber who deserves nothing from him or his family.

But the Searing sexual chemistry between them can't be denied. Sebastian sees an opportunity to seduce this girl who plays it so sweet and innocent. He'll discard her when he sees fit...

    Comments:
This book was a pleasure to read. Sebastian has known Rachel for several years due to her mother's marriage to his beloved uncle. Sebastian dislikes Rachel's late mother because he saw her as a gold digger and opportunist, who destroyed his uncle's life and caused his death. Sebastian knows in his heart that Rachel is nothing like her mother but allows his grieve to cloud his judgment. Sebastian and Rachel spend one night together, but all is destroyed by Sebastian's hurtful accusations.

Rachel finds out that she is pregnant, the doctor also discovers a few medical problems, so to protect her child's future she contacts Sebastian. Sebastian regrets the way he treated Rachel and works hard to make it up to her, but not without some resistance from her.

The book flowed well it didn't have the annoying, interfering ex-girlfriend\want-a-be girlfriend and allowed the hero and heroine to work out their problems, with some help from his mother.

I know that this is outside of the HP format, but more pages on this story would have been nice.

    5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read.......2006-08-04

I recently discovered Harlequin Presents books, and I have to say they're pretty good - short, juicy stories with a foreign flair. Lucy Monroe's books are no exception. In "The Greek's Innocent Virgin," we have the story of Sebastian Kouros and Rachel Long aka Rachel Newman. Rachel is a sweet young woman who has had a longtime crush on Sebastian. Their relationship, however, seems doomed from the start. Sebastian can't seem to separate Rachel from her catty and promiscuous mother. As such, Sebastian is conflicted toward Rachel. A part of him knows that Rachel is nothing like her mother, but her mother has done so much damage to the Kourus family that he can't help but believe the worst of Rachel. Of course, like in all romances, the star-crossed lovers end up together, and all is well. "The Greek's Innocent Virgin," is an enjoyable read that I devoured in just a few hours.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful read.......2005-12-24

Sebastian Kouros thinks he knows all about Rachel long. After all she is just like her mother a convining scheming gold digger. But she isn't and the chemistry between them is anything but milD, seducing her was no diffcult feat which makes sebastian sick with himself because he see himself going down the same road as his beloved uncle. Only rachel isn't a gold digger she was a virgin and sebastian won't be able to live with himself if she doesn't take him back because as sure as he is greek he will never let her go again.

3 out of 5 stars sweet but was lacking............2005-11-12

The story line was really good....but I believe the writer could have done better.

Rachel Long returns to Greece to bury her estrange mother and stepfather after they died in car crash. She had always loved Sebastian from afar, but on this last visit she decided to share an intimate relationship with him. After one night of passion, and the next morning of misunderstanding, she leaves and goes back to America only to learn about two life altering news: 1. she is pregnant; 2. she has a heart problem! Desperate to give her unborn child the opportunity of knowing its father (a luxury she didn't have) she contacts Sebastian to take care of the child in case something happens to her.

Sebastian was devastated after the death of his great-uncle and blamed Andrea, Rachel's mother for causing it. He always had a tender spot for Rachel, calling her "little one" but after his great-uncle's death, he directed his anger and frustration on the one who carried Andrea's bad gene: Rachel. He believed her to the carbon copy of Andrea and treated her thusly. But once he realized his mistake, it was too late and Rachel was gone from his life for ever.

As I said before, the storyline was REALLY good and thoughtful, but it was too short for my taste. What the author wrote is acceptable, but she could have expanded it more with more depths on the hurt and longing felt by both sides. Some parts were heartbreaking which is sure to bring tears in your eyes. Overall, it wasn't so bad and I'll deem it to be a draft rather than a total finished copy.

    1 out of 5 stars bleah.......2005-05-25

I guess I have to be the odd woman out this time. I saw nothing likeable about either character, finding both one-dimensional and uninteresting. Every horry old Harlequinism is here: the unredeemably bad mother, the misunderstood heroine, the fabulously wealthy alpha-alpha-alpha hero, the exotic locale, the bad dialogue. I know the author wanted to show the hero's growth from chauvinist to sensitive good guy and the heroine's spine by running away from a bad situation until the hero changed. But the author couldn't sell me on either. I bought this book on the strength of other books by Lucy Monroe. I know LM is capable of much better storytelling than this formulaic, uninspired nonsense.

Just about everyone's had a day when they've wished it were possible to send an alternate self to take care of unpleasant or tedious errands while the real self takes it easy. In Kiln People, David Brin's sci-fi-meets-noir novel, this wish has come true. In Brin's imagined future, folks are able to make inexpensive, disposable clay copies of themselves. These golems or "dittos" live for a single day to serve their creator, who can then choose whether or not to "inload" the memories of the ditto's brief life. But private investigator Albert Morris gets more than he, or his "ditective" copies, bargain for when he signs on to help solve the mysterious disappearance of Universal Kilns' co-founder Yasil Maharal--the father of dittotech.

Brin successfully interweaves plot lines as numerous as our hero's ditectives and doggedly sticks to the rules of his created dittotech while Morris's "realflesh" and clay manifestations slowly unravel the dangerous secret behind Maharal's disappearance. As Brin juggles his multiple protagonists and antagonists, he urges the reader to question notions of memory, individualism, and technology, and to answer the schizoid question "which 'you' is 'you?'" Brin's enjoyment is evident as he plays with his terracotta creations' existential angst and simultaneously deconstructs the familiar streetwise detective meme--complete with a multilayered ending. Overall, Kiln People is a fun read, with a good balance of hard science fiction and pop sensibility. --Jeremy Pugh

    Book Description

In a perilous future, disposable duplicate bodies fulfill every citizen's legal and illicit whim. Life as a 24-hour "ditto" is cheap, as Albert Morris knows. A brash investigator with a knack for trouble, he's sent plenty of clay duplicates into deadly peril, then "inloaded" memories from copies that were shot, crushed, drowned . . . all part of a day's work. But when Morris tackles a ring of crooks making bootleg copies of a famous actress, he trips into a secret so explosive it incites open warfare on the streets of Dittotown.

    4 out of 5 stars A sprawling world of a book.......2007-10-02

This book was a long read, and I wouldn't say it was very streamlined when it comes to plot. No, I'd say that in place of any sort of this-happens-and-then-this-happens-etc. type of plot, this book focuses on creating an entire, amazing, previously unthought-of WORLD--and doing a fine job of it, I might add.
The book tells the story of a world in which people can download copies of their souls into temporary clay bodies, send those bodies out to do their work (or play) for them, and then inload those bodies' memories into themselves at the end of the day. It's a terrific idea with tons of opportunities provided (and taken) by the author to sketch out all the crazy practices and idiosyncracies and philosophical ramifications that such a world would incorporate: from war to sex to child custody.
The book takes a little while to understand and to get into, but it ultimately really pays off. The story is good, but ultimately seems like merely a vehicle to put this amazing world of clay "dittos" on display.
I read online that a sequel, "Kiln Time" is in the works, and this book was good enough that I would certainly buy that as well.

2 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Strangely unsatisfying for a Brin work, although an interesting idea, the clay copies part. Perhaps for a mystery/murder type book this is a bit on the long side, so that is part of the problem. Definitely lighter in tone than a lot of his other novels, or less serious, although not without serious implications.

    5 out of 5 stars A Gift.......2007-07-15

I've been reading science fiction for more than 40 years. Mr. Brin gave me a gift in this book.... something completely different. It is nice to get a surprise rather than have a rehashing of tired old themes. If you want a surprise and are tired of the old Bug-Eyed-Monsters-Eat-The-World kind of books, I highly recommend this author and this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Kiln People.......2007-06-07

A great read! Written in a bizarre mixture of POV's, it takes a bit to get used to this novel. There are also quite a few slang terms used for the technology that add verisimilitude and character to this fictional world. Throughout the course of the book, there are interesting plot twists and turns to keep you riveted, and the moral questions can keep you thinking! A highly enjoyable read that I reccomend to others.

4 out of 5 stars A long read, but worth it.......2006-10-02

Kiln People is a book that defies easy description, it is definitely science fiction but beyond that broad categorization, it fails to fall easily into any niche - it's original. This book was a tough read, not because it's a bad book - it's good! But because it is so information dense, you have to really pay attention while reading it. Brin throws out ideas left and right with little or no backstory, assuming that the reader lives in the society described, which we, of course, don't. This is a technique used to great effect by Heinlein, and Brin uses it nearly as well. The story blends murder mystery, scifi, and the golem legend together and spits out something completely new, while tackling deep questions like "Who am I?" and "Where do we go when we die?" I guess the best way to describe the actual density of this book is to compare it to the average SF novel - I read 6-7 of these a week, about 1 a day. Kiln People took me 5 days to finish.

                    Book Description

New enhanced edition of the original underground classic by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D., features rare interview excerpts with this internationally acclaimed Jungian analyst and cantadora (keeper of the old stories). First released three years before the print edition of Women Who Run With the Wolves (Ballantine books, 1997) made publishing history (more than 2 million copies sold worldwide), this landmark audio probes the instinctual nature of women through world myths, folktales, and commentary. Through an exploration into the nature of the wild woman archetype, Dr. Estés helps listeners discover and reclaim their passion, creativity, and power.

5 out of 5 stars Thriving not just Surviving.......2007-02-27

Clarissa Pinkola Estes has a warm vibrant personality. As she explores beautiful myths and fairytales, you can sink into the beautiful space of childhood dreams and wonder. Her voice is soothing and comforting and her main message seems to be the uncovering of the feminine archetype that brings creativity and nourishment to a woman's life.

At times I have thought that until you have used the idea of "bones" in a poem, you have not reached into the depths of yourself and found that essential element that births you as a poet. This almost represents an indestructible part of yourself and Clarissa Pinkola Estes brings a new understanding to the idea of "bones" used in mythology.

The Mistaken Zygote idea seems more like the "story of the stork" and doesn't seem to explain why you may find yourself in a family where you feel out of place or never at home. A few teachers who focus on archetypes seem to think that you are placed in family of your choosing. So, both ideas are ways to explain what we can't possibly know. I think that "feeling different or like you came from a different planet" has more to do with a conflict of personality or the difference between being an introvert or extrovert. Since most people seem to be extroverts, introverts can sometimes feel out of place or different.

                    Some of the topics include:

                    Forgiveness

Clarrisa Pinkola Estes discusses how it is possible to channel lust into poetry, gardening or other creative endeavors. For women who feel they have been "over domesticated" or restricted in younger life, she gives ideas for breaking free from other people's restrictive ideas. This is not done without much consideration (and also includes releasing the rage you feel) and this is not an encouragement to be rebellious or destructive. Instead, this idea is more to nurture the inner wildness of a woman that breaks her free into her deepest life expression and most fulfilling creative path.

The mysterious stories, memories from childhood and advice about how to enhance creativity felt very true, honest and encouraging. The message is one of nurturing your soul and being patient with yourself so you can flower and your heart can open so you can bless the world. I had to smile when Clarissa says she is friendly, but not totally tamed. If you know the wild beauty of being able to express your inner creativity or you want to experience this freedom, this classic study of the wild woman archetype may encourage a renewal of your life purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......but still buy the book.......2003-04-20

Every story a woman ever needed to hear is there. You will be swept up by the warm, rich quality of Dr. Estes' voice. Her analysis of the stories clean the windows of your mind and give you fresh tools to unlock gates and open the windows to your soul. This is one though that you still want to have in print!

4 out of 5 stars Not As Good As the Book but Worthwhile Nonetheless.......2000-07-12

Although this audio cassette claims to be abridged, which it is, it also contains information not printed in the book, which to me seems odd. This is the only reason I retain both book and audio cassette.

Theatre of the Imagination (Volumes I and II), to which I give 5 stars, gives fuller treatment to the stories.

                    5 out of 5 stars Not one-sided.......1999-12-16

I just want to say that this material is as valuable for the male as it is for the female. Just as the stories are timeless and archetypal, so are the messages contained within. I'd recommend WWRWW to anyone interested in inner work and understanding, and also the Theatre of the Imagination (two volumes) audio series, which doesn't suffer from the perception that it is for women (only).

5 out of 5 stars A must for every woman who feels that she should "LIVE".......1999-09-24

This is no miracle medicine book for an overnight turn over to a new you.... This book is certainly not prescribed for a person who does not have the courage to look with in. But for the woman no matter what she is, a house wife, a professional or an executive, as long as she accepts that she wants to be the woman the lord created her as and stop living the way soceity/ circumstances / culture dictates, this book is a friend who will wisper in your ear each time where to turn and where to look.

I would not appreciate this book being used to be displayed on a book shelf as an indication of so called intellectual reading. It is not. This book is for every woman who likes to listen to tales, to think about these tales and to learn from these tales. Read it and ask your self, why is that so. Open the minds doors, stray into those corridors where you never wanted to go, never had the time/ inclination to go...... and you will in time, after reading/ rereading will find the graceful, fully alive, intutitive wolf woman with in. and she is the best friend you could have for the rest of your life..... and if you really love your daughter, show her the path.

The womankind should thank Clarissa for this book.
