Book Description

Set in the gloriously rugged backwoods of the Pacific Northwest in the 1970s, Nina Shengold’s gripping debut novel follows three people in search of new lives deep into uncharted terrain of the body and heart.
When rough-hewn loner Earley Ritter picks up a hitchhiker one rainy night, he can’t imagine how much it will change his life. A "shake-rat" who salvages cedar stumps left when loggers clearcut, Earley seems to have little in common with Reed Alton, a gifted Berkeley dropout. But when Earley meets Zan, the fiery and mysterious woman Reed has been following, erotic sparks fly in unexpected directions. Thrown together in the splendid isolation of the woods, with passions and tensions mounting, the unlikely trio achieves a fragile balance that–like their idyllic patch of forest–will be shattered by violence. At once a page-turning psychological drama and a colorful, wildly comic recreation of a lost time and place, Clearcut explores the boundaries that divide us, and what it takes to cross them.

5 out of 5 stars Clearcut.......2006-08-22

Best book I've read all year. I lived in Olympia, WA for six years and Clearcut transported me back to the area. Not at all what I expected - much better.

5 out of 5 stars Strong on Many Levels at Once.......2006-05-30

Nina Shengold manages to do something magical in this novel: evoking a time recently past while propelling you into the thick of an atmosphere so immediate you won't be able to shake it off easily after finishing reading.

Yes, there once was a time when life-choices had a broader range of erotic and economic possibilities, making for interpersonal confusions, adventures, victories, and sad losses. Nina's characters ring true. She has a remarkable able to imagine the erotic imagination and physical experiences of a man, while clinging to the female version of eroticism at the same time. This is unique and, simply, a gift.

There are times where the book gets bogged down in some detail (usually about logging practices in the Northwest) and I found the beginning a little slow-moving. I was afraid it was going to tread over much-trodden-upon ground with its plot. It didn't.

The second half of the book MOVES; it is hard to put down and it haunts you.

Strong on atmosphere, gifted in its erotic atmospherics and complexity, this book is a keeper. You will find yourself recommending it to anyone with a well-developed brain, love of the erotic, and love of contemporary literature.

I am enormously impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and tender.......2006-03-25

I don't read a lot of contemporary fiction, but this was recommended by a good friend. It's a beautiful and compelling story of three characters who form an odd sort of boy-girl-boy romantic triangle that challenges each of them in unexpected ways. Although there is clearly a "main character" each story comes through clearly. She really takes us inside their head in a way that never relies on easy conventions. The story is funny, sad, moving and Shengold's talent in drawing us into the lives of these three wayward people lost in their search for happiness kept me wanting to know more about them. There is an exciting edginess in the emotional twists and turns of the book that feels, all to sadly, very much like that thing called "life"

4 out of 5 stars Great until the last 24 pages.......2006-03-24

A great book, a wonderful love story, marvelous characters...until the last 24 pages, when a tragedy blindslides the characters and the reader. Suddenly, everything that the entire book has built is smashed to pieces, leaving the main character in an ending as bleak as Brokeback Mountain's, but without the redeeming social message. This tragedy happens for no reason; it comes out of nowhere. As a reader, I feel very cheated by what the author does to these characters I came to love.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous read.......2006-01-05

There's only one thing you need to know about this book: it's a terrific read. A friend handed it to me and said, "I'm not telling you anything about this novel. Just read it." It's the best advice I can give. The only problem comes when you have to put it down (to continue with your life). Earley is such a haunting character: full of conflict and contradictions. How could anyone not fall in love with him?

3 out of 5 stars Railroads and Clearcuts.......2006-03-11

I bought this book looking for a history of the Northern Pacific, and was somewhat disappointed. To be sure there is the history of the railraod and the land grant that created it, but it is more of a polemic on the ecological impact of the land grant.

The authors want more to get congress to overturn the land grant issue rather than explain the history of the railraod and the affect the land grant had on the area. Even if they wanted to get their environmental message across, doing so with solid history and empirical data would have been much more effective. Instead, what they produced is more of a rant about the injustice of it all.

Again, there have to be better histories of the NP out there, this book isn't it.

            Book Description

Set in the wild and wonderful Kootenay region of British Columbia, this novel probes the on-going battle between environmentalists and loggers over the forests both groups love--but for very different reasons. Author Steve Anderson has evenly divided the debate, allowing his characters to fully present their perspectives and the reader to decide who is right and who is wrong. But this time, the dispute has catastrophic results. The message is clear: confrontation is not the answer.

Sharply drawn characters and a fast-paced plot make Cleacut Cause a must for fiction readers interested in the fate of the ancient forests.

              Book Description

The company proposing to build a new pulp and paper mill in East Harbour, Nova Scotia, claims it will bring a backward community into the twenty-first century. Ryan Cooper believes them--he thinks it'll bring badly needed jobs to the town and keep people from having to move away.

But Ryan's girlfriend Alana, a native of the Mi'kmaq First Nation, isn't so sure. She worries about what the mill's clearcutting and pollution will do to the local environment. When she learns it's going to be built on sacred Mi'kmaq land, she decides to fight the company. With a little digging, Ryan and Alana find an environmental impact study that raises a lot of unanswered questions about the project. But the fight to stop development creates deep--and dangerous--divisions in the impoverished community.

Clearcut Danger is the story of two courageous young people who take a stand to protect what they feel is most valuable in their community.

                  Book Description

Jennifer Blake, Heather Graham and Diana Palmer, well-loved voices of romance fiction, bring you three new stones of sultry Southern romance. With a Southern Touch will renew your faith in the power of love.

An eighth-generation Louisianian, Jennifer Blake says "few things have stopped the women in my family from doing what we think is important. 'Steel Magnolia' grit and determination are in our blood." Married at fifteen, Jennifer and her husband recently celebrated more than four decades of happily-ever-after.

"My mom and dad are Irish and Scottish respectively, so I'm a first-generation Floridian," says Heather Graham. "South Florida, has always been my home, and I love it --the sun, the water and the beach. My husband and I were high school sweethearts and we've raised (and are still raising!) five children here in the sunshine state."

"The women in our family are traditionally strong and independent, thanks to our Scottish-Irish heritage," Diana Palmer says. "And the characters in this story share this same heritage." A die-hard romantic, Diana Palmer married her husband five days after they met, and they have lived in northern Georgia ever since, raising a son and a menagerie of animals.

Three wonderful Southern tales for the price of one...not bad! I read for the fun of it and I usually look for something that is also, easy on the eyes, quick, and most of all entertaining! (I could care less about typo's proper grammer and all that bunk!) GIVE ME A GREAT STORY to entertain myself and I am a HAPPY CAMPER!

"With A Southern Touch" by Jennifer Blake provided me with one really fun afternoon! "Thank You!"

4 out of 5 stars For the Beach.......2002-06-10

Three quick little reads in one attractive book makes for a perfect day at the beach. Jennifer Blake, Heather Graham and Diana Palmer each contributed a story for the collection.

The stories are all different but each is light and with a southern touch. I personally enjoyed "Garden Cop" the most but they were all entertaining.

Oh, and take a hint from the cover and have a long cool glass of something tasty to drink (with a touch of mint).

                                          • Explores how to turn the base substance of who you are--the dark mystery of your subconscious--into the alchemical gold of knowledge and enlightenment

                                          • Includes techniques of distant healing and working with power animals and plant, mineral, and elemental spirits

Alchemical Healing brings together innovative techniques of shamanism and energetic healing with the principles of alchemy, creating a practical form of physical healing, therapeutic counseling, and spiritual growth. The author provides ways to integrate spirit and matter, to develop communications between divinity and humanity, to retrieve knowledge, and to influence physical reality in order to achieve healing and transformation. With simple directions, readers are guided through attunements and empowerments that access the Universal Life Force energy and a five-element system for healing themselves and others. They learn powerful techniques, such as psychic surgery, distant healing, and how to work with power animals and plant, mineral, and elemental spirit guides. Alchemical Healing presents a sacred journey into the most profound principles and mysteries of creation. It offers both an art form and a spiritual path that develops one’s ability to co-create the future with the wisdom of the spirit world.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the above March 31, 2004 review.
I am a physician who is planning to start up my own Energy Healing practice in my home in January 2005. I got "Alchemical Healing" 2 months ago. I read the book in 2 days and found it to be one of the most practical and helpful Healing guides that I have ever had the pleasure of reading over these last 37 years I have been practicing Medicine. I liked the book so much that I flew down to Asheville, NC last weekend (November 6/7, 2004) to take Nicki's Alchemical Healing Part I course. It was magic. Alchemical Healing is not only "what the doctor ordered"..but for anyone interested in practically using the powerful energies of Nature around us. I particularly enjoyed Nicki's Initiation into connecting to and using the Elements for healing purposes. I look forward to using many of Nicki's techniques in my private healing practice.

3 out of 5 stars Good overview - not deep.......2004-04-01

Nicki covers lots of ground, it's almost like a stew. A little Reiki, Alchemy, Shamanism, Intuitive work, spirit helpers, etc. She does a nice job of introducing concepts and making the material very accessible. This is a great introduction to a practical spirituality in general.

However, if you have had some experience in a few of these areas then Nicki really does not have a work with depth to make this a really meaningful resource. She does not go enough into Alchemy or Shamanism or the Elements for example to give you insights beyond a cursory and somewhat shallow introduction.

While I have great respect for her and what is trying to do in this synthesis, I feel that she spends too much time on fluff and not enough in the details. She does not really provide enough to successfully give Alchemical Healing it's unique fingerprint as a healing modality.

A great beginners read but not that useful for someone who wants to get into these topics in detail.

You may wish to acquaint yourself with the inspired writing of an internationally known healer, Nicki Scully. We readers find, in Alchemical Healing, clear and practical descriptions of healing methods we can ourselves learn, in order to produce seemingly miraculous results without doctors' appointments and expensive prescriptions. Nicki makes no claim that alchemical healing methods should replace traditional medical care, however, and she has found that both often work well together.

Nicki Scully's courageous journeys to gain knowledge and practical experience of ancient healing techniques -- coupled with her eagerness to share them with people who can know her and her work through her books, lectures, teachings, and guided trips to Egypt, Peru, and Tibet -- are legendary. She works with healing allies: totemic animal spirit guides, crystals, herbs, sound, the elements of fire, air, water, earth, and many others. For her there is no narrow, right way to accomplish personal transformation and healing, and there are as many ways to do so as there are individuals on the planet. She covers many, but certainly not all, and emphasizes the ones she uses most in her own practice.

Her life's work is now beautifully put forth in Alchemical Healing. It is an amazing book -- electrifying and inspiring -- from Nicki's pertinent and fascinating personal story to healings of critical illness and injury through a number of modalities. The anecdotal stories of healing are often so stirring that they had me in tears.

The healing methods are described in detail, with exercises and initiation rituals for the reader, who may well wish to become a healer after reading the first one or two chapters of the book. The steps are easy to understand and follow, with essential details emphasized to ensure the safest, most positive results for the healer and individuals receiving the healing.

I expect to keep this book within easy reach as a treasured reference and guide for the rest of my life.

5 out of 5 stars a practical guide, great stories........2004-02-08

This book represents an amazing feat of synthesis and inspired understanding. What Nicki Scully has created with her Alchemical Healing work, drawing from the wisdom traditions of Ancient Egypt and Native America (and others, such as Reiki and Huna) is a comprehensive and integrated school of energetic healing and transformative inner work. This is not some trendy new age amalgam, but a lifework emerging from decades of dedicated practice, life experience and intuitive inquiry. The book is filled with Nicki's amazing experiences and applications of the work, and the moving stories of how this work came to her through life experience, master teachers and spirit guides.

Most importantly, this book is a practical guide containing exercises, practices, initiations and techniques for energetic healing that anyone can do. The initiations are a key (and in my experience, rare) feature of the book- simple rituals, when followed with conscious intention, that open doors to perception and energy, as well as forge inner connections to your own totems and guides. I can say from experience that these initiations create effective channels of communication and turn on energetic capabilities that persist and become reliable tools for all kinds of inner work. If you are interested in empowering your spiritual work with practical tools that go way beyond the merely psychological, this book can hook you up. For those unfamiliar with working with inner guidance, these initiations will be a revelation to the knowledge that more and more of us are awakening to: we have wise, compassionate, loving help available to us. We have spiritual companionship and partnership available to us.

Alchemical Healing covers a broad array of topics from basic healing techniques using the Universal Life Force, the Elements, and Spirit Allies. Self-preparation for the healer, including the initiations, invocations and forgiveness- a necessary step to releasing unhealthy attachments- are all fully covered. A large chapter covering specific techniques and application of the work as well as a truly essential chapter on healing ethics to round out the basic healing course. The advanced course introduces you to Thoth's Caduceus, the non-physical element Akasha, healing with sound and music, advanced practical techniques and self-healing. The final section gives you the spiritual heart of the work, which can be summarized as guidance, gratitude, compassion and love. Further, if you wish to work more deeply with Alchemical Healing, there is a list of authorized teachers and healers at the back of the book.

Clearly, I am impressed with and highly recommend this book, especially to those dedicated to a spiritual path and healers of all kinds. I have had a long-standing relationship to this work (as one of many collaborators to it's development), and it has been of inestimable value to my path of dedication to Spirit. It is an advanced work, that while clearly and non-technically written, might be too expansive for some new to spirituality. It challenges many cultural and religious axioms, but that is part of what makes it a pithy, substantial book and not some superficial feel-good that everyone will be comfortable with. A guaranteed mind-expanding read.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting blend of healing modalities.......2003-12-10

This interesting work combines the techniques of energy healing and shamanism with alchemical principles in order to provide a practical guide to physical treatment, psychological counselling and spiritual transformation.

Many disciplines are integrated into the author's healing modality, including Reiki, Huna, elements, symbols and archetypes, plants, crystals, sound and colour healing. Distance healing and psychic protection are also discussed.

Other interesting topics include the ethics of healing, the blending of traditions, self-healing (especially where the healer is concerned), psychic surgery and how to obtain help from the spirit realm. There are many exercises, meditations and attunements throughout the book that teach the healer or prospective healer how to access the universal life force.

Alchemical Healing is a very thorough investigation of and guide to holistic healing that provides a cohesive programme despite drawing on so many different traditions and techniques. The book contains impressive black and white illustrations and concludes with two appendices and an index.
