Book Description
Set in the American South in the years before and during the Civil War, John Wray’s hypnotic new novel is at once a crime story, a bravura work of historical fiction, and a fire-and-brimstone meditation on American credulity and corruption.
Thaddeus Morelle’s followers call him “the Redeemer.” Over the years he has led the Island 37 Gang from stealing horses to stealing slaves in an enterprise so nefarious that both the Union and Confederacy have placed a bounty on their heads. But now Morelle is dead, murdered by his puppet and prot?g?, Virgil Ball, who may rid himself of the Redeemer but can never be free of his Trade. Based on the true story of John Murrell, a figure once as infamous as Jesse James, Canaan’s Tongue is suspenseful and fiercely comic, a modern masterpiece of the American grotesque.

overwrought, overthought, pretentious dreck.......2006-03-02
as with anything the so-called "john wray" (not his real name) writes, "canaan's tongue" is bristling with brilliant ideas. unfortunately, wray overthinks and then overwrites so that the end result is something akin to a literary collision of clunks, to put it in an overwrought, overthought way. indeed, if today's budding hipsterism movement--everything from interpol to gawkerists--were anything other than over-hyped pseudo-thought, john wray would be the poet terrible of the moment. as is, he's the blathering idiot off to the side at the party your cousin takes you to because he wants to show you what's "cool" in town. here's hoping wray's next outing will in fact be readable. if not enjoyable.
Potentially Enslaving Tale .......2005-12-28
I had to backtrack and check out some of the interesting history involved here... I had occasional trouble (as usual, you might charge) following clearly along this novel's trail, so I propose 3 stars, 3.5 at most. Don't know what others have been reading to post all these 5 star ratings? C'mon, dudes, how many 5 star books are there? Anyway, in terms of a skeletal framework for this truth-based tale and, even, some of the characterization, this was a fine effort. Twain influence is obvious but I also felt a lot of Blood Meridian undertones and can't help but wish McCarthy had mined this lucrative vein. The author is fairly young evidently but, with a strong editor, shows a potentially strong upside. Still, a pretty good read, see what you think...
Grostequerie abounds!.......2005-09-26
Man, this book is slammin'! It shines amidst the young-upper-middle-class-male-with-a-sex-perversion stuff which young authors seem deadset on producing these days. It is really close to perfect. Why, one might ask? Because it is everthing a novel should be: riveting, moving, mindblowingly well-written, with wonderful, lovingly crafted characters, and most important of all, I think, copious nodding to those who have come before (also lacking these days), ie---Poe, Faulkner, McCarthy (mini-Faulkner), and maybe a even a little Les Murray, for this Wray fellow is a poet of the highest order. Do read.
Canaan's Review.......2005-09-20
The remnants of a shattered crime organization wait on a Southern plantation for the Civil War to finish them off. So goes the plot of Canaan's Tongue, the second book by prizewinning author John Wray (The Right Hand of Sleep). Their charismatic if physically stunted and theatrical leader, Thaddeus Morelle, a "plain-faced dumpling of a man" known as the Redeemer, is dead, leaving his underlings to piece together this assemblage of individual retrospectives. Their trade, which involves the springing of slaves to sell at a profit and eventually murder, is threatened by the rising tide of abolitionist sentiment, the same on which they once depended.
Vicious criminals, yes, and yet none of Wray's characters are at any point islands unto themselves. Instead, they are all subject to the will of a still-higher power, becoming its "play-thing" and being "fashioned and favored toward that end alone." Even the big shots get stuck with this bone. This is life as part of "the Trade," a continuously re-invented enterprise that we are told will eventually encompass the world and hide in the very language, feeding on us even while we think ourselves cured.
The novel's political premise is none-to-subtle; men and women, lured by the promise of freedom and prosperity, walk right into slavery and death. "The country itself will have this fever," we are warned, and "its transparency will be its shelter." Yet if Wray stops just short of using billboards to advertise this point, Canaan still manages to fascinate us with its gothic intrigue and imaginative strangeness. It is a rare and absorbing book that manages to transcend both historical period and cultural agenda to deliver what is ultimately a fresh perspective on a tried and tired Matrix school of thought.
Canaan's Tongue.......2005-09-16
Literary historical fiction, ostensibly about slave-stealers during the Civil War.
But really about belief and its pitfalls, mysticism that cannot entirely be explained away, and the choice that America during the Civil War was on the verge of making.
Canaan's Tongue features one appealing character and others who are fascinating (like snakes). At times it's darkly humorous and at other times beautiful or grotesque. As historical fiction, it succeeds in taking no account at all of modern beliefs or politics (thankfully). At the same time, it can be interpreted as an indictment of the "modern civilization" that was to come -- where everything becomes the Trade.
I think this is a great novel that has somehow slipped into the world without much fanfare. I highly recommend it.

Can I give it zero stars?.......2007-04-27
I picked this book up at the library. I'm not a diehard Linda Howard fan, but I have enjoyed many of her books and figired this would be a nice way to pass the time on a rainy weeknight. Wrong! I ended up throwing the book across the room in disgust. If I didn't have to return it to the library, I'd throw it away! Some people may consider Rhy's behavior romantic and desperate. Some might even use the "alpha male" excuse. They're kidding themselves. He is an egotistical brute hell-bent on living life like it was still the 1950s. And this book was written in the 1980s, when women were working to shatter the glass ceiling! Why someone would write a book that goes against everything women were fighting for is beyond me.
To summarize, Sallie marries Rhy when she's 18 and he is 28. He's a hotshot broadcast journalist. She's a umpy child. He married her because he felt sorry for her, but was surprised at how good she was in bed. Lovely. She wants him home more. He won't and continues to go Lord-knows-where covering the news. Sallie becomes pregnant but delivers a stillborn while Rhy is gone. They fought upon his return and he leaves, telling her to call him when she's woman enough for him.
Fast-forward to seven years later. Sallie did better herself, but not for her estranged husband. She's now a hotshot print journalist for a weekly newsmamgazine that was just purchased by her husband. She tried to hide from him, but he discovers the ruse and insists that they remain married. He interferes with her job, then fires her, and sets her up in his own condo, never giving up his professional career. Sallie begins writing a book and we're supposed to believe that makes her happier, but it doesn't. By the time he finally admits he loves her, I was hoping she'd grow a backbone and marry someone else. Anyone else!
This book is bad enough to turn me off Linda Howard forever. I can't support someone who wrote something so horrible. Strong characters are attractive. Bullies are not!
horrible.......2007-02-11
to be honest, there isn't much i can add to a review that other people haven't already said. the hero is horrible, and the heroine is equally horrible for staying with her 'husband' and letting him get away with his behavior. i think she should have run off with the other reporter, or at least, leave the newspaper!!! hello, if she is as good a reporter as she seems to be and has the kind of rep she should be able to find another job pretty quickly. instead she play a meek 'wife' and lets her husband clip her wings because he was finally ready to settle down....
don't waste your time on this book, it will just frustrate and aggrivate you. try one of her more recent novels, they are pretty good :)
An inappropriate title for a very dated story.......2006-08-05
Sarah Baines will never forget the day when her husband left her after only one year of marriage and her whole world came crumbling down. For months, she functioned like a robot before she decided to be exactly the woman that her husband wanted her to be. So she went back to college, took lots of courses and studied until she could do no more. But as she learned new things and gradually came out of her shell and made friends, she realized that she was thinking less and less of her husband and simply enjoying life in general. That was seven years ago. Now a self-reliant and confident woman, she has carved out a career in journalism and is now known as Sallie Jerome. A far cry from the clinging wife who relied so much on her husband's love, Sallie has definitely come a long way... and then her estranged husband walks into her life once again.
Hearing that Rhy Baines is their new publisher, Sallie tries to avoid facing her estranged husband. But the new boss could only be avoided for so long before their paths have to cross. And when it finally does, Sallie is astounded to realize that Rhy remains the only man she can't seem to resist. And as Rhy makes it clear that he wants his wife back, Sallie is torn between her feelings for him, and the need to hold on to the life she has worked so hard to establish.
AN INDEPENDENT WIFE is an earlier novel by Linda Howard. While the plot is very dated and typical of romance novels written in the eighties, it was already indicative of Howard's talent in writing. And as a fan, it was good to be able to see how much she has grown as an author whose books I simply adore. I have no problems with alpha-male heroes, in fact some of the best books I have read feature these types of heroes, but I found no redeeming quality in Rhy at all. He was a first class jerk right from the start and his declaration of love towards the end was simply unconvincing. As for Sallie, the title of the novel became quite a joke as soon as she loses the so-called independence she worked so hard for the moment Rhy stepped back into his life. What a shame!
As much as it pains me to do this for I am big fan of Linda Howard, I can only give this book 2 stars. If you were a fan, you wouldn't miss much if you never read this novel.
should be titled "Doormat Wife".......2006-04-19
In all fairness, this book was written in the 80's so the story was really outdated; but to be fair to her readers, the book sucked! I'm not even sure why this book was given such misleading title since the wife in this book showed no backbone or independence whatsoever. If you are a first time Linda Howard reader, I wouldn't suggest this book. Instead try 'Son of the morning', 'Cry no more', 'Heart of Fire', in fact.. all of her other books were good except this one.
If you are a Linda Howard fan don't buy this one!.......2005-11-17
Wow this was almost painful to listen to. When Sara is abandoned by her globe trotting husband just after she delivers a stillborn child alone you feel sorry for her. But, she takes the opportunity to change herself and in fact finds that she likes to report herself. She remakes herself as Sally Jerome and becomes a top notch international reporter. But, when her magazine is bought by her ex husband she can't seem to function any longer.
This book becomes a huge dissapointment at this point and painful to finish. She is no longer a funny strong character. In fact she lets herself be bullied by the ex and even "gets back together" with him while he still has a girlfriend. Yuck. Find one of her newer books and you will be a lot better off!
Product Description
In a form reminiscent of her best-selling novel A Woman of Independent Means, the author reveals the inner workings of a marriage from both points of view, the husband's and the wife's, uniquely captured in freeze-frames from the pages of a diary.

Don't Do It!!!.......2004-03-07
I got this audio version from the library. I do a lot of traveling and I love Linda Howard so how could I go wrong.
I listened to the tapes even though I read that they were the abridged version (I only listen to and buy unabridged editions)and I regretted it imensely.
The editing was awful. So awful that bad books were even worse (All That Glitters and Independant Wife). Loving Evangeline I thought was an okay book, but because the editor cut out so much of the story, this too becomes an awful book. Loving Evangeline is one book that I think readers should take the time to read.
If you have to get the audio version then go through your library and obtain a copy. Whatever you do, do not buy it first!!!
Linda Howard ALWAYS gets 5 stars from me!!.......2001-02-10
Since there is no description of this audio book, I thought I would add one.
This is a Collector's Edition of *3* Linda Howard romances (abridged). All That Glitters, Loving Evangeline, and An Independent Wife.
I took a chance and ordered this not really knowing what I would be getting, and I am so glad I did.

Dog in the manger - or is it more?.......2006-06-22
Sallie Baines had to become a strong woman when her husband Rhy walked away. He had been the globe-trotting journalist, she the clinging stay-at-home wife worrying about him every minute.
The book opens seven years later when her husband shows up as the new publisher shows up where Sally is now a journalist. She's gotten an education, taken a tough job, and has been busy working under her maiden name.
But Rhy's trampling over everything she's accomplished. They never got a divorce and Rhy makes it clear that he still considers her his wife. He won't let her take a new assignment -- unless he goes with her. He quizzes her about boyfriends and changes her nameplate to her married name.
The trouble is, Sallie never stopped loving Rhy. Is he being the dog in the manger, or does he feel something stronger than possessiveness?
Linda Howard writes strong characters, and Sallie is strong enough that it's reasonably clear that she could walk away any time she wanted. However I can't agree that harrassing behaviors (changing job duties, threatening to black list an employee with other companies, etc) are romantic and excusable - even though this was written in 1982 so it's presumably a change in culture - so I can't give this book 5 stars.

The God of writing........2006-07-28
This is probably one of the best fiction books ever written. Of course it will never be elevated to that postion by the critics, who wouldn't be caught dead lauding a 'sci-fi' book as high fiction. The best you will get from them is some amusing and witty remarks.
The power of Attanasios prose is absolutely jaw dropping.
They say every writer, no matter how good, earned his chops under some mentor or studying the writings of others.
But I don't know where Attanasio found better writers to immulate. He seems to be channeling some God of writing.
As Khayyam said of the vineyard owners, "I wonder what they buy, one half so precious as the stuff they sell." One could ask the same about Attanasio.
Read this book. You will never regret it. And you will never forget it.
Astounding piece of work!.......2006-07-23
OMG!! Radix is an amazing book...Attanasio is an incredible visionary! I owned this book a year before I got round to reading it, but when I did I couldnt put it down! It took me on a powerful, intense, violent, beautiful and in-depth journey personally, not just as a "story". Every turn and twist (surprising as many of them are) seemed to connect directly with me; the sign of a true "writer". Attanasio tapped into something powerful here, and clearly has a tremendous command of language and a philosophical & spiritual knowledge that exudes in natural, integrated ways from the pages.
Whenever I opened the pages I was 90% in there, drawn in, affected deeply! When a sci-fi/fantasy book, this "alien" to our present life seems SO real when you look inside, you have to know, there was power, dare I say "genius" behind the writing/writer!
So powerful!
A somewhat disappointing read..........2006-03-14
Since I thoroughly enjoyed other Attanasio novels such as "Solis" and "The Last Legends of Earth", after much anticipation I finally aquired a used copy of "Radix" and sat down to read what was hyped as one of the most overlooked but best SF novels of all time.... Sorry, not even close.
"Radix" is set on a future Earth where a beam of weird cosmic radiation emanating from the center of the galaxy has mutated life on the planet, caused the collapse of the plantery magnetic field and generally wrecked havoc. The main character, Sumner Kagan, battles "distorts", "voors", "orts" and an insane AI on his journeys, transforming along the way from an obese, violent teenager into some kind of demigod.
While this story started out interestingly enough, I found it a struggle to make it through this book and almost put it down several times. As it was, I skipped over various parts due to impatience with the often incoherent metaphysical and philisophical gobblety-gook that dominated this frustrating novel.
"Radix" was merely OK. It cannot hold a candle to other awesome books that it has been compared to such as "Dune" and "Lord of the Rings". Perhaps the biggest disappoint in "Radix" was the development, or lack thereof, of the main character, Sumner Kagan. I could not connect with this guy and it seems, in the end, that his personality or soul finally achieved what this novel represented to me....an empty shell.
is 5 really the highest?.......2005-09-28
Paradoxically enough, the mark of a good book is when you forget that you're reading. This book was one of those.
I was so thoroughly engrossed with Sumner Kagan's life that I began to cancel dinner plans and sat for hours pondering Mr. Attanasio's revelations throughout. This book is a living, breathing organism of wisdom. I agree with a former reviewer, if you haven't read this, I envy you! You are in for a surprise.
A wordsmith of rare imagination. A reprint is in order........2005-04-11
This IS an overlooked masterpiece, as another reviewer saidIf. I wish Attanasio would write more science fiction and less fantasy, but we take whatever he is willing to share and we take it gladly. Radix and Last Legends of Earth are two of the best books I have ever had the pleasure of reading and re-reading. A reprint would bring this towering talent out into the light again, sharing with another generation what science fiction should be. Many seem to feel that if the story is set on a space ship and/or you have a BEM you are reading science fiction. Attanasio, on the other hand, can take you places you have never been. If you have never read this book I envy you. You are in for a delightful journey.

To Be or Not To Be?.......2001-07-26
It's really difficult to describe Daniel Libeskind's works when he doesn't profess himself to be an architect & yet, claiming that he's not a non-architect either. So, what is he? Anyway, his work is very abstract & cerebral. Daniel is a very eclectic & talented individual, with degrees in music, mathematics, architecture & upon submitting his pieces for competitions, he actually used music sheet! Then, he questioned if the outcome of the competitions was decided by a panel of jury, & was that the rite thing to do. In many instances, readers might feel that we're getting somewhere in understanding his works & subsequently, a curveball would be thrown & we would end up just as confused as when we first started. Suffice to say that he's an urban planner, looking at the overall picture, believes in evolution of designs which would benefit future generations. He argued that his high profile work for the connection between the Berlin Museum & the Jewish Museum might be nicknamed "zigzag" but in actuality, in real life, its presence conveys something otherwise. If readers could look beyond his supposedly desconstructive work, he's in fact a traditionalist & a realist. Daniel is forever arguing with himself & there's nothing more enjoyable to him than engaging in discussions. I wish that there were more pictures of his works but most of them were taken in a hurry, or that they were pictures of models. There were also descriptions of some kinds of his modern art works & sculptures (or machines)? The writings at the end of the book is intensive reading, but there's undeniable of Daniel's depth & it's about time someone of his calibre racks up the architecture world with his avant-garde thinking. Other projects worth reading here are Alexanderplatz, Berlin; The Spiral: Extension to the Victoria & Albert Museum; Jewish Community Centre & Synagogue, Duisburg; & so forth. Not for the faint-hearted but highly recommended.
GReAt - MonoGRAhiC - vAlUe.......2000-06-20
Fans, just for fans,ONLY for those who had a previous approach to libeskind's work. (results as to much for first-timers) advanced desconstruction followers will feel satisfied of owning this piece. The "plus" comes in the writings, the way they are writen is pure and simple "congruence" something worth to be digested.

ASIN: 1412023386
Release Date: 2004-11-13 |
Product Description
New discoveries about the nature and properties of the life force confirm what old civilizations like those of India and of China have taught for millennia. The life force can become the central concept in human knowledge, whether it be known as chi, spirit, soul, bioenergy, god, orgone, élan vital, or radix. It sits astride the great divisions in knowledge that split mind and body in the individual, self and other in relationships, religion and science in human society. Knowing the nature and properties of the life force makes it possible to reconcile these divisions. This book provides that knowledge -- what the life force is, how the process of creation through the life force actually works, and how this information can be used to change ourselves and the external world around us.
First, however, long-cherished illusions of both religion and science must be given up. The greatest of these illusions is the belief that religion in itself or science in itself, one or the other, can provide an adequate explanation of the deeper nature of things. The deeper nature of things cannot be explained by religious texts and dogmas. Nor can it be reduced to the laws of physical science. Something else is required.
We need to allow the possibility that consciousness and physical reality have come into and are still coming into existence together through the action of the pre-existing life force in the natural, understandable creative process.
Kelley's frame of reference is scientific, but he is also a psychologist. His discoveries about the life force come alive in these pages when he addresses the profound work of Wilhelm Reich, and demonstrates the relationship of the life force to muscular armor in human beings with examples from his own personal growth practice. Insights into muscular armor as a positive mechanism of the human will are described in chapters on emotions, purpose and, finally, autonomy.
The primary focus of this book is human consciousness and the life force. A life-time's interest in physical science and the life force - meteorology, cosmology, engineering, -- is concentrated into the last chapter, and prior writings on the subject comprise the Appendix.
Customer Reviews:
Inspired and Inspirational.......2005-11-16
Here,in his magnum opus, Life Force, Chuck Kelley has succeeded in corraling the "too much-ness," the cosmic micro and macro (and everywhere-in-between)purview of the discoveries of Wilhelm Reich.
Kelley's own work has advanced "Reichian" theory by lightyears. A fascinating, sometimes terrifying, mostly wondrous, peek beyond the veil of mysticism and mechanism that continues to veil the face of "God" .. the creative process in the universe. An absolutely stupendous accomplishment!!! I only regret that it has come before its time. Few will be able to grasp the deeper implications of what Kelley has presented to the world.

Book Description
Praise for The Witches' Almanac, The Complete Guide to Lunar Harmony:
"The Witches' Almanac, a compendium of history, lore and legend, has had a catalytic effect on the Wiccan resurgence. With an ever-growing circulation, the little book has become the most influential and respected occult publication in the United States."-East West Journal
"For many of us who found our way back to the Old Religion in the 1960s, one of the very few guiding lights along the hidden path during those early days of the pagan revival was a little booklet called The Witches' Almanac. Sometimes it could be found right out in front at a bookstore, next to the cash register, but more often it was to be discovered hidden in a dark corner, ready to reward the determined seeker."-Dan and Pauline Campanelli, Circles, Groves & Sanctuaries
The Witches' Almanac has been acclaimed for the quality of its art, design and content since its debut in 1971. Clarity and presentation of the moon calendar, astrological predictions of the gifted Dikki-Jo Mullen and sensitive weather forecasts from climatologist Tom C. Lang are special features. And one may find within its pages a host of arcane secrets and spiritual wisdom.
The element of fire, lively and unpredictable, provides a theme for the next edition. From the myth of Prometheus to medieval bonfires and modern candle spells, fire plays a vital role in magic annals. Nordic tales, classical mysticism, Japanese fox lore and the fiery constellations that guide our destinies are highlighted. As always, exciting graphic images and intriguing symbols grace the pages.
Almanac devotees will delight in the recently published collection, Witches All. The book derives from the early issues (no longer available) of The Witches' Almanac, published annually throughout the 1970s. A large, glossy book with cogent text and a wealth of art, it reveals the history of witchcraft in the Western world.
Customer Reviews:
The most reliable almanac; much better than Lewellyns'..........2006-04-16
For about four years i've been reading this book, and it has never made me regret buying it. This is one of the best books published on this subject nowadays, and its wonderful that it comes out every year. I look forward to each new copy.
It has gained a notoriety among the community, and has even been used in movies like "The Craft." It's a shame this book is not more popular; its really a treasure, and should be known by everyone.
Enjoy this practical handy almanac........2006-01-09
What I like about this almanac is the calendar for the lunar cycles, astrology and the suggestions for each day. It is a wonderful way to stay in tune with the universal vibe. I also found the rituals for new moon (previous issue) helpful and herbal lore and recipes for sachets, etc. This almanac has something for everyone whether you practice wicca or not.
It has definitely added more depth to my practice being somewhat new to the craft. Highly recommend in addition to Llewellyn's.
Not disappointed.......2005-08-04
I haven't missed a year of these books since--well I don't know when. Fun and fact filled, this book is definately an enhancement to any witch's library. I refer to it every morning and evening, if just to see what phase the moon is in or what bit of insight they give for that day. Very entertaining with informative articles and essays on everything wiccan or nature related.
Informative and interesting.......2004-05-22
I run on online group for people interested in Wicca/paganism. Many of the people in my group are interested in knowing about the phases of the moon, astrology, etc. This book has been an excellent resource for those things.
The Perfect Witches Almanac.......2003-08-02
I am pleased to say that this is exactly what I was looking for in an Almanac -- something that simply tells me the phases of the moon, important dates, etc. with other charming articles, poems, and artwork for my reading and viewing pleasure. No irritating fluff thrown in there like in the Llewellyn Almanacs, just straight to the point information and articles worth your time. The reason this almanac is a dollar more expensive is because it's the better almanac. Whether you're an experienced witch or you've only been one for a day, this almanac will help you keep track of things!
