Book Description
Combining the suspense of John Grisham's A Time to Kill with the moral complexity of Richard Wright's Native Son, this debut novel asks the question: How far can a man go to balance the scales of justice? In the 1960s, racism was rampant in Jackson, Mississippi, and it was common for white mencaught in the act of killing blacks to be acquitted by allwhite juries. But 40 years later, someone is seeking justice; those same men are turning up dead-in the identical manner in which they killed their victims. Now, James Reynolds, who has overcome the odds-and his own personal demons-to become the only black prosecutor in Jackson, will face the toughest case of his life: He'll have to prosecute prime suspect Martin Matheson, a brilliant professor, the son of a venerated Civil Rights leader, and the newly appointed folk hero for thousands of African Americans hungry for retribution. Stigmatized by the community as an Uncle Tom, Reynolds must break through the media blitz and mounting racial tensions to find the truth-and search his soul to determine where justice ends and vengeance begins.
Download Description
Attorney James Reynolds has dealt with personal demons his entire life-raised in the shadow of Deep South racism, plagued by recurring nightmares, and nursing a few too many Jack Daniels late at night. But he has still managed to become the only black prosecutor in Jackson, Mississippi. However, the unsteady peace in his life is broken when white men start turning up dead. The victims are the same men who, in the 1960s, were caught killing blacks, yet shockingly, were subsequently acquitted by all-white juries. Thirty years later, the unpunished whites are being murdered in the same manner as their victims. Now Reynolds has been assigned the toughest case of his life: He must prosecute the prime suspect—Martin Matheson, brilliant professor, son of a venerated Civil Rights leader, and newly appointed folk hero for thousands of African-Americans hungry for retribution. Stigmatized by his church and community as an Uncle Tom, Reynolds must break through the massive media blitz and mounting racial tensions to determine the truth. Most troublesome of all, he must search his own soul to determine where justice ends and vengeance begins.

Haunted Still.......2007-09-21
In summer 2004, I reviewed for Mystery Scene Magazine and wrote a piece on Jeff Stetson's powerful debut novel, which takes its title from the lyrics of a haunting song: "Southern trees bear strange fruit, Blood on the leaves and blood at the root . . ."
I have never forgotten this vivid book. This morning, reading of racial injustice in Jena, Louisiana, I thought again of BLOOD ON THE LEAVES. If only those schoolboys sitting under their "whites' only" tree, its branches hung with empty nooses, would take the time to read Stetson's novel, to think things through and put themselves in another's place.
While its plot hinges on racial conflicts, Stetson's story is far from black and white. Like the world we live in, the book's fictional world is richly nuanced with complex personalities struggling to determine where they stand on the continuum from justice to vengeance. Three years after reading BLOOD ON THE LEAVES, I still remember how Stetson's writing shines and how his themes resonate. Too bad the conflicts he wrote about are not a thing of the past. I wish we could all forget to hate.
Hold on to your seats for this one..........2007-08-03
This book was extremely detailed and you can't dismiss any little bit of information that is given. I guarantee you it will be needed later as you try to figure out who is responsible for the murders being committed. It's a racially charged book that doesn't bring out your own color, but it gives you the opportunity to see several sides of the story no matter what color the characters are or no matter what they are being accused of doing. I am sure that anybody will agree the 60's were a time when some of the nations most horrific crimes were committed against mankind, and this book gives you the feeling that no matter who you were, what color you were or how much money you had it affected YOU!
Provocative, extremely well written.......2006-03-14
After a somewhat slow start, Blood on the Leaves gets moving and presents a fascinating tale wrapped around the question, "What would happen if someone sought justice for the unprosecuted lynchers and murderers of blacks during an era gone by?" Would that individual be a murderer or a hero? How does one define a person who has taken the life of another based on unfathomable hate for an entire race? Does the blind murderer's life have any value? The fact that a well respected black professor is later arrested for the crimes and tried by a black prosecutor creates a delicous stew of moral dilemnas. A great read. A wonderful first novel by author Jeff Stetson.
Engrossing and Thought Provoking.......2006-01-26
I picked up this novel expecting a light and predictable read (in other words, another John Grisham wannabe). Oh boy was I wrong! This novel is a veritable slap on the face. Stetson takes a no-holds-barred approach when tackling the sensitive issues of discrimination and race relations in the US. On one end of the spectrum we have Dr. Martin Matheson, a highly charismatic black professor who is bent on avenging the gruesome murders that were committed during the tumultuous 1960s, when the civil rights movement was gaining momentum in the South. He is accused of being the avenging angel who has recently been killing the old white men who over 30 years ago committed these foul deeds. On the other end of the spectrum we have another fascinating black character -- James Reynolds, a brilliant deputy district attorney who worships the law and has always fought for color-blind justice. Ultimately speaking, Stetson's novel addresses the fine line that separates justice and revenge. When this blurry line is crossed, the rule of law is twisted and the end will always justify the means.
Instant Classic.......2006-01-22
Jeff Stetson's novel is easily an instant classic. Very suspenseful and educational from a historical point of view, the battle of wills and wits between two Black professionals dominate the story. It will be interesting to see which character Jamie Foxx decides to play--Attorney Reynolds, who is truly a district attorney in every sense of the words, or Professor Matheson, a possible murderer, hero to many and a man who demons may be getting the best of him.
Mr. Stetson has weaved a story that will keep you on the edge, make your mind wonder about yesteryear and the effects racism, terrorism and discrimination have had on the psychic of Black America, and the effects of what would really happen in America if such a crime occurred in America today. Additionally, we are introduced to two very memorable characters. The mental clash between Attorney Reynolds and Professor Matheson should play out well on the big screen.
My book has been favorably compared to Mr. Stetson's Blood on the Leaves and I am happy for the comparison because this one is a must read!!! Mr. Stetson, great job of painting the ugly picture of Mississippi years ago and capturing the essence of our world today. Looking forward to your future projects!

Book Description
This romantic series by Sally John follows a group of women who are knit together by friendship and faith. If your readers have enjoyed the Other Way Home stories in A Journey by Chance and After All These Years, you don’t want them to miss Just to See You Smile.
Teacher and coach Britte Olafsson finds herself drawn to the new principal who’s an ex–Marine. His discipline toward life and in teaching matches her own, and when coaching dilemmas erupt, he strongly moves to support her. Despite her fears, Britte tentatively begins to open her heart to him.
Just to See You Smile demonstrates the unconditional love of Jesus and the true meaning and beauty of semper fidelis (always faithful).

Another good one.......2006-11-08
The author is very good weaving characters that are not *too* perfect. Had the Marine mentality down as well which made it very fun to read.
good book.......2006-04-08
I enjoyed this book very much. I've read it twice. I enjoyed reading about Anne and how she and her husband learned about teamwork in marriage. Britte and Joel were delightful.
Good read.

This is a good one..........2002-07-31
I just read the first story, "In the Hall of the Mountain King". It's an excellent homage to the old Humphrey Bogart movie,"Treasure of the Sierra Madre". It has enough Known Space detail that I didn't realize it until Jonah and two Kzin were in the mountains with an old man and some mules, panning for gold. I especially liked how the authors avoided Goldhat and his now infamous "Badges...We don't need no stinking badges" line - instead replacing him with Ed "Ti Kwan Leep/Boot to the Head" Gruedermann (by the Fanatics as heard on Doctor Demento).
5 Stars just for this story.
Second best of the series so far........2002-02-15
Like volume IV, (and unlike I-III) this book contains only two stories, rather than three. Unlike volume IV, the stories are a bit more even in length, 202 and 129 pages respectively. The first story, by Jerry Pournelle and S.M. Stirling, is a continuation of their story in volume III of the series, and is quite good, more interesting than I've found any of their previous stories set in the Wunderland system. The second story, by Thomas T. Thomas, is a little bit of a comedown from the quality of the first story, but only a little bit; it's much better than the second story in volume IV of the series.
For those of you unfamiliar with the series, I wouldn't really advise starting with this book, although it wouldn't be as disastrous a mistake as starting with book five of SOME series. All you REALLY need to know going in is that Kzinti are a sentient, spacefaring race evolved from carnivorous hunting cats, seven feet tall and 500 pounds of mighty warrior who consider it marginally dishonorable to plan an attack against so trivial an opponent as an omnivorous monkey, and whose general "strategy" amounts to "first you scream and then you leap". For this reason, and this reason alone, humanity always wins in the long run. The short run, however, can get quite unpleasant for the unwary monkeyboys.
The entire series is excellent, and highly recommended.
Cool........1999-07-29
A lot of the later Man-Kzin Wars stories take place on or in the vicinity of Wunderland, which I just find utterly cool considering the ways the authors use this locale. I WANNA FIGHT IN A MAN-KZIN WAR!!!

The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr.
ASIN: 1888375353 |
Book Description
In the spring of 2003 there was a worldwide demonstration for nonviolence that was the largest in history.
A growing number of people are studying the works of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and other nonviolent leaders as the world collectively seeks to abandon the use of weapons in resolving conflict. At a time when eloquent and inspiring voices for peace are relevant more than ever, In the Footsteps of Gandhi, profiles contemporary leaders in this struggle. Here are people whose positive work has been part of international news for decades—in topics ranging from AIDS, to apartheid, to the Israeli-Palestine conflict—all of whom embody the understanding that violence is not stopped by violence. Violence is only ended by love.
This revised edition of Catherine Ingram's book features interviews with Mubarak Awad, Ram Dass, Thich Nhat Hanh, Cesar Chavez, H.H. The Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, Joan Baez, and others.
Customer Reviews:
A spiritual activist's must-read.......2007-05-28
Excellent series of interviews with still pertinent movers and shakers in the realm of spiritual activism. Incredibly inspiring. Very very relevant for today, though written in the late 80's.
Beautiful Book.......2007-01-05
This book will inspire you to begin making the changes in the world that you desire to see. It includes inspirational and down to earth interviews with some of the greatest activists that ever lived. Always remember change is possible if we take action and pursue it with love. Highly recommended.
Touching on an impressive array of modern social issues.......2004-01-13
Now in a newly revised edition enhanced with a new foreword by Arun Gandhi, and featuring interviews with Mubarak Awad, Ram Dass, Thich Nhat Hanh, Cesar Chavez, H.H. The Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, Joan Baez, and others, In The Footsteps Of Gandhi: Conversations With Spiritual Social Activists is a collection of deeply contemplative and insightful essays written by a diverse roster of contemporary spiritual and social activists. Touching on an impressive array of modern social issues ranging from AIDS, to apartheid, to the Israel/Palestine conflict, and more, this seminal tribute to the power of (and desperate need for) nonviolence is emotionally moving, morally relevant, and enthusiastically recommended reading for anyone concerned with how best to address the rampant social issues of our time.
A must-read.......2004-01-07
Catherine Ingram's beautifully constructed book presents interviews of spiritual social activists that serve both as a historical record and, in our current world climate, an inspiring reminder that it is important to take action in line with our beliefs and principles, and that the word "spiritual" can include engaging oneself in crucial social and political issues that affect us all.
