A truly fantastic and diverse collection. If you are at all interested in contemporary fiction, I highly recommend it. Also, check out the fabulous quarterly they put out.
The best collection of fiction I've read in a long time........2003-11-29
The stories in this book are all very able, very professional. Some are tender, some scary, some funny. There's a good mix. It was much better than I expected and I plan on reading the magazine regularly now.

The Perfect Start For A Perfect Series.......2006-11-14
I have all of the Princess School books and all of them are great! I liked If the Shoe Fits because it tells about 4 friends who are princesses and are just like other girls. I love it!!!!!!!
Princess School: If the Shoe Fits.......2006-08-09
I'm 16 and loved this book. My sister (age 10) was reading it and the title caught yy eye so I picked it up. It's really cute and it stresses great values such as indiviuality and friendship. I found that this book made the princesses more like real girls and gives them the opportunity to relate to them better. It was good and I recommend it really for anyone who is a princess at heart.
True, Not Just 4 Kids.......2006-04-22
This book is so good. I'm 12, almost 13, but I like reading fantasy books. I found this book in my school computer lab and started reading it. I hope to read the others. It looks like a book for 6 years old, but it's not. It's great for all ages!
This book is about a girl, Cinderella, who has to deal with her evil stepsisters and stepmother while attending a school, called Princess School. Her two stepsisters attend the school and try to make her life and her classmates' a living hell. Luckily, she meets 3 other girls, Snow, Rapunzel, and Rose, who are the only nice girls from her class. They help her get through her classes while Ella must do all the dirty work at home. Plus, I love the ending!
Familiar Princesses with a twist!.......2005-12-11
This was an awesome book. Like most people, i wish Ella was brunette. I guess disney made her blonde in the movie. My favorite character is Rose, though. They didn't have a whole ton of her. I've read the first three books, but I've started the fourth. When i picked it up, i though i was too old to read it, but i was wrong. It's great for all ages!
The Best One.......2005-10-31
I've read every book in the series and am impatient for 'Thorn in Her Side'. This one is my favourite because Rapunzel's my favourite out of the four girls, and it has a lot of Val/Rapunzel moments. :-)
Book Description
Rachel Sommerville was captive. Not only was she practically imprisoned by her witch of an aunt in the Sommerville Towers, she was forced to sing for the San Franciscan hotel's guests. What was more, Roland Connor could see in her the repression of a wild sentiment, a savage desire that had yet to be released. He was counting on it - for it was in seducing the young woman that his vengeance would be complete. Rachel was pure sweetness, a real American princess. If he were to tarnish the golden-haired beauty before her wedding night, send her to the bridal bower with more tricks than a saloon girl, he would gain his revenge on the man she was being forced to marry. But to free Rachel from the constraints of decency, to knock her from the high pedestal of her virtue, Roland needed a foothold to her heart - and to harden his own. But that would happen soon enough . . . as soon as she let down her hair.
Customer Reviews:
How am I the only one offended by this book?.......2006-03-22
There is not one likeable person in this book. They are both horrible liars and users of people. The whole premise is based on a man seducing a woman to get revenge on that woman's fiance. Am I supposed to cheer for this guy? Cause that ain't happening.
And the heroine is no better. She's engaged, yet she'll willingly cheat on her fiance. As if cheating is okay when you don't love your fiance, or if you love the man you're cheating with. Cheating is cheating, I don't care how nicely you try to wrap it up in a fake picture of romance.
I felt these too deserved each other, and not in a good way. They were both horrible bastards without a shred of decency or moral fibre. Skip this book, unless you enjoy reading about people who are lower than a snake's belly.
A heady blend of eroticism and innocence.......2001-10-31
It seemed so simple. Roland Connor intended wreck revenge on the woman his enemy holds dearest. Daniel had debauched his sister, leading her to her grave. His plan is perfect. He'd seduce the innocent woman destined to be Daniel's wife. He'd teach her harlot tricks, and maybe late one night, when she lies in her husband's arms, rather than calling out her husband's name, she'll call out Roland's name instead. He didn't know she'd teach him to love.
Kept like Rapunzel in her tower, far removed from the mundane necessities of life, Rachel Summerville accepts her aunt's dictate that her only job in life is to be pretty and to marry well. Despite his misgivings, Rachel plans to marry the man her aunt selected for her. Then she meet's one of her aunt's guests. Roland's insolent smiles and hopeless importance awakens the woman within. Even knowing that he's a gambler, a horse thief and a con man, Rachel allows him to teach her the pleasures of life. She descends a rope to his waiting arms, and together they walk the streets of San Francisco, attending the symphony and tasting the forbidden. Even as she gives Roland her heart, she knows she will marry another.
Once again author Linda Jones creates a naughty, sensual romance that will hold readers entranced. Combining the faerie tale elements of Rapunzel with the horrors of Jack the Ripper, LET DOWN YOUR HAIR becomes a tale both uncommonly fresh and sharply original. This sensual journey of a young woman's awakening sexuality combines eroticism and innocence in a heady blend. As Rachel learns to let her hair down, they share a joint lesson in life and in love. LET DOWN YOUR HAIR is a delightful read, coming highly recommended.
Clever and different.......2001-10-28
I've read most of these fairy tales and I've found them all clever and different. Each one makes me think and laugh. I'm always amazed at how she twists the tales and comes up with something new. For instance, "Let down your hair/hare," takes on a whole new meaning in this book. I enjoyed it immensely!

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-08-04
Bruce Sterling's anthology Mirrorshades announced the existence of cyberpunk. A more modern type of street level, urban science fiction in a lot of cases. While the authors here have done better work elsewhere this is still a very interesting and influential collection, and certainly of use to people with an interest in that sort of science fiction.
Cadigan, Gibson and Shirley are all here, for example.
Mirrorshades : The Gernsback Continuum - William Gibson
Mirrorshades : Snake-Eyes - Tom Maddox
Mirrorshades : Rock On - Pat Cadigan
Mirrorshades : Tales of Houdini - Rudy Rucker
Mirrorshades : 400 Boys - Marc Laidlaw
Mirrorshades : Solstice - James Patrick Kelly
Mirrorshades : Petra - Greg Bear
Mirrorshades : Till Human Voices Wake Us - Lewis Shiner
Mirrorshades : Freezone - John Shirley
Mirrorshades : Stone Lives - Paul Di Filippo
Mirrorshades : Red Star Winter Orbits - William Gibson and Bruce Sterling
Mirrorshades : Mozart in Mirrorshades - Bruce Sterling and Lewis Shiner

Best Collection For the Genre.......2003-09-16
This is simply a fantastic collection of the best stories of my favorite literary subgenre, the Cyberpunk Movement in the 1980s and early 1990s. While I may not like William Gibson and Bruce Sterling, I am not ignorant when it comes to their importance in popularizing and shaping the genre. Also here are Rudy Rucker, the acting grandfather of the genre; and Pat Cadigan, the Queen of Cyberpunk (even though she had very little, if any, real competition).
While there are a couple newer Cyberpunk collections, The Ultimate Cyberpunk coming to mind, the first is still the best. Not only are the stories fantastic, but the anthology didn't have to rely on a nostalgia effect, like those that are being published now.
A good introduction to the genre, as well as an essential item for one's collection.
A mixed bag, but still pretty good.......2003-02-27
This book is a collection of cyberpunk stories assembled by Bruce Sterling. It is supposedly the definitive cyberpunk fiction collection. There are some really good stories in the book such as the Gernsback Continuum, Solstice, Freezone, Till Human Voices Wake Us, Stone Lives, and Mozart with Mirrorshades. These tales had advanced technological concepts and more importantly, good stories. The stories touched on gene engineering, time travel, cybernetics, and other popular cyberpunk themes. Some of the other stories were pretty interesting, but some just didn't seem to fit. For example, Tales of Houdini and Petra seemed out of place in this collection. Though they were both sci-fi tales, they didn't seem to be cyberpunk.
A decent anthology, yet highly politically motivated.......2002-09-03
Now, I'm not saying that Mirrorshades was bad. Not only did it contain one of the most definitive PR essays on cyberpunk (Sterling's introduction) but it also conains some very good stories. On the other hand, it could have been much, much, MUCH better.
Bruce Sterling, who edited Mirrorshades and similarly hand-picked the stories, clearly has his own agenda to the particular stories...at least, in some cases. Sterling assembled this almost as if it were an extension of his short-run newsletter, Cheap Truth (which he wrote under an assumed name of Omniveritas). In Cheap Truth, he attacked the existing science-fiction structure. He continues this trend in Mirrorshades.
The clearest example would be his choice of Gibson short work. Of the possible short stories, he picked The Gernsback Continuum and Red Star, Winter Orbit. Gernsback Continuum is, simply, not cyberpunk. It is Gibson's attack on Gernsbackian science fiction (Hugo Gernsback was really to blame for the "fantastic" science-fiction which used amazing gadgetry and no actual ideas). Sterling's view of the Movement (cyberpunk lit) was to erase the old Gernsbackian sf and replace it with real life rather than daydreams, so he picked this story as Gibson's contribution. This is absurd. The definitive cyberpunk short story is Burning Chrome. It is clear that Sterling chose to further his own political ends as opposed to providing a good overview-the best of the best-of cyberpunk fiction.
I could also have done without Sterling's final story, Mozart with Mirrorshades. This was, of course, an attempt to weave in the token item of the genre, the mirrored sunglasses. Sterling would have been much better off to include one of his Shaper-Mechanist stories, especially Spider Rose or Swarm. These stories are much better realized-and much more cyberpunk-than his choice. I would also have liked to see a more appropriate Rucker story...Rucker is great, but Tales of Houdini just wasn't appropriate.
Still, there are some great stories in here. Cadigan, Shirley, Shiner, Bear, Maddox, and others all contribute great works. If anything, Mirrorshades should be a starting point; find authors you like here, and then read the really groundbreaking stuff by them; John Shirley's Eclipse trilogy, everything by Gibson, Bear's Blood Music, Cadigan's Synners, Mindplayers, and Tea from an Empty cup, Rucker's Software trilogy, Sterling's Schismatrix, Maddox's Halo, and so forth.
However, if you want to simply read good cyberpunk short fiction, get the short story collections by the individual authors. As I said before, this is just a jumping-off point.
Basis Element.......2002-01-19
Essentially, you can measure your susceptibility to cyberpunk by reading this book. I would say it's a *basis* for this sub-genre of science fiction.

First published in 1924. Widely acclaimed as the foundation writings of Rastafarian. Also known as the BLACK MAN BIBLE.
Customer Reviews:
Humm.......2007-08-13
I found the Holy Piby interesting and very different from anything I had ever read. I have a little more insight on the concept, however,I will continue to study the bible. The 2 star rating I gave is only my opinion and is based off me reading about half way through the book.
Of Great Historical Interest.......2007-03-26
"The Holy Piby" is one of the most influential pre-RastafarI texts, written from 1924-28. The Anguilla-born, US-living, all the Americas-travelling author Robert Athlyi Rogers founded a new branch of religion with it, emancipatingly named after himself: The Afro Athlican Constructive Church (with the last word later changed into "Gaathly"), in short Athlicanity. With quite a few Athlyans once living in the US, the Caribbean and a branch in South Africa.
The Holy Piby contains religious re-interpretations corresponding to creation, baptism, the ten commandments (12 in this case) and so on, comments on the author's years in the US, ties to Marcus Garvey's UNIA and Ethiopia in a broader sense. The religion branch founder considered himself an apostle and tolerated no other church.
82 text pages long, this booklet also has an additional 16 introduction text pages by two RastafarI authors to offer, written in 2000, which include two Ises (prayers). One of which harbours a derogative swear word against gays, obviously because of a desired rhyming for "maggots". I mean, really: In a prayer? Printed in a holy book? As the foreword for another author who never touched the subject and can't complain anymore? Placed ambiguously as if written by the founder of Athlicanity himself? But instead by someone calling himself "Ras", an Ethiopian titel of dignity? A bit out of place, I might say. This sure shows the phenomenon of the contemporary downsession (obsession) with gays by some dancehall raggae inspired Rastas.
It is not so much for the reader to agree with everything in the (at times sexist) Holy Piby (or its homophobic introduction), but the historical aspect of emancipating from and challenging the racist system, including the colonial religious system. The still high rating has to be seen strictly in this light, without forgetting that we are supposed to move ahead - from 1924 as well as from 2000. This book probably is for the interested in Black / religious history only, most of these being RastafarI, even though this isn't yet a direct Rasta text, but an Athlyan one.
Crackpot ravings.......2004-03-26
Before anyone says how good this book is, take time to actually read it elsewhere on the web. Basically, it is the ravings of another self-proclaimed prophet named Athlyi (middle name of the author) who goes on and on about how God supposedly appointed him to start this thing called the Athlyican Church beased on what would now be called Afrocentric teachings. He claims that he appointed Garvey as an apostle, but Garvey himself openly denounced such would-be afrocentric messiahs in 1927, 1934, and 1936 (see the volumes of the Marcus Garvey papers for these years). Almost every other sentance (like the comparative "Book of Mormon") begins with "And it came to pass..." Pretty tiresome stuff after awhile.
One can understand the need for the more downtrodden people of the African diaspora for these kinds of teachings for a badly needed improvement of self-esteem. But the fact is that there is enough REAL and verifiable Black history out there (along with the actual writings of Marcus Garvey) that things like this are really not necessary. Interesting only for historical and sociological reasons.
The Holy Piby.......2002-06-14
The great word of PROPHETS ... who dare to destroy it so do the movement... is about time u accept our words and brethrens within every corner in this planet, We know where we stand in the struggle!
a must buy.......2002-02-28
Puts alot into perspective. allows the mind to think outside of the mold, helped me see life through an african american eyesight and not everyone elses.
