Book Description
Graham was an historian: he was meant to be an expert on the past. But there were aspects of it, he discovered, that couldnt be subdued, that simply carried on, lively and painful, as if they were the present. He began to mind. He minded very much indeed. While those around him look on, Grahams meticulous passion gradually begins to run out of control. Julian Barnes presents an unnerving version of sexual jealousy and shows it to be not just living, but reasonable, ordinary, funny, dangerous and consuming.Picador reissues Julian Barnes with, for the first time, a striking, integrated cover design across the whole backlist.

Small struggles of life.......2007-09-06
In this age of pop-psychology we are urged to strive for the heights of success, but most of us find our lives centering around the small struggles of friendship, marriage and ex-marriage. When Graham leaves Barbara for Ann he feels that his life has truly entered a happy period, the "honey time." But slowly, insidiously, Graham's mind becomes fixed on the men Ann has previously been with. Although all that happened before he met Ann, he cannot help thinking that it is as if she has been unfaithful to him. Also, how can he, a mere history professor, hope to compare to those worldly men?
This book is both comic and biting. If you have ever been divorced or had marriage problems you will probably recognize some of yourself in the story. But to be honest this book is not for everyone. While in many respects realistic, it is written in a slightly heightened, cerebral style. Barnes is definitely an 'intellectual' writer.
Obsession.......2007-09-01
Julian Barnes must be one of the most various of English novelists writing today. FLAUBERT'S PARROT is virtually a piece of literary history in novel form. A HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN 10½ CHAPTERS is just that, a very peculiar history starting with Eden and moving on from there. ARTHUR AND GEORGE is a linked biography of two contrasting but real figures from the late 19th century. Each of these uses a totally different narrative form, and none is exactly what you would call a normal novel. By contrast, BEFORE SHE MET ME is closer to conventional fiction in containing made-up characters and having a beginning, middle, and end. It is a kind of Bluebeard story in reverse, in which it is now the husband who becomes jealous of his wife's former lovers.
Graham Hendrick is an academic historian, used to uncovering the relics of the past and teasing out their meaning; in this case, however, his training leads him only into trouble. While caught in a stale marriage, he falls for a younger woman called Ann, and divorces his wife in order to marry her. Ann is open and devoted, and Graham discovers new life under her influence. But he has had little experience other than with his first wife, and finds it hard to accept that Ann has had a much more varied romantic life (and a perfectly usual one for 1980; in exploring the attitude of different generations towards sex, the book is in some ways an extension of Ian McEwan's ON CHESIL BEACH, twenty years on). For a short time, Ann had a career as a B-movie actress; Graham happens to catch one of her films, and begins to wonder about her liaisons, onscreen and off. As he persists with his misapplication of the historical method to Ann's past, Graham's interest becomes an obsession, and eventually spills over into speculation about her present, leading to the dramatic climax with which the book ends.
I cannot say that the ending feels entirely right, but this is a book where the journey is much more important than the destination. Along the way, Barnes offers marvelous insights about divorce and the dynamics of marriage, in and out of the bedroom. There is a lot of genuine love, even among the craziness. Parts of the book are hilariously funny, especially the characterization of Graham's friend Jack Lupton, a philandering novelist of the back-to-the-soil school, who has developed farting to a fine art. And there are quite brilliant passages such as this, where Graham is looking through Ann's bookshelves and comes upon some maps: "All of Ann's maps had been put away as if they'd been interrupted in mid-use. This made them more personal and, Graham suddenly realized, more threatening to him. A map, for him, once folded back into its proper order, lost its user's stamp: it could be lent or given away without touching on any feelings of attachment. Looking at Ann's awkwardly squashed maps with their overruled creases was like seeing a clock stopped at a certain significant time; or -- and worse, he realized -- like reading her diary. Some of the maps (Paris, Salzburg, Madrid) had biro marks on them: crosses, circles, street numbers. The sudden particularities of a life previous to him." This is at once an historian's insight and a novelist's. In another situation, such discoveries would add to the attraction of the other -- but under the irrational but relentless grip of jealousy, they lead only to disaster.
i have read almost all of barnes.......2005-07-08
and this is a vicious, silly, revolting book with an
obsession over sexual jealousy that will make you
reel. julian barnes has written three decent
books: "talking it over," "love, etc." and the
solid short story collection "cross channel."
the rest are worthless--he's an effete francophile
(horrors!) and a teabag milquetoast. William Boyd
is the only really formidable English novelist these
days. sad. don't get this or anything by salman rushdie.
Ouchy!
Interesting ideas, but not so interesting of a book.......2005-04-30
The topic of exploring the sexual jealousy of a man regarding his wife's past lovers is, in my opinion, a largely unexplored aspect of life in litereature. For those who found it unrealistic, let your imagination run wild the next time your lover discusses his or her past relationships.
Unfortunately, the way it was encountered here was so over the top that it became so absurd that it seemed to parody itself. Some people may have found this funny, but I would argue that it undermined the value of undertaking reading the book; it would be hard to say that this is 'humor writing' or to even call this a funny book.
That said, I agree with many people here in regards to the characters. All of them, seemed to be not only unlikeable but also unconvincing. They have no comlexity to them what-so-ever. They are all one sided caricatures: the shrewish wife, the crude writer, the subservient and loyal wife, and the obsessed man. All their characterization could be summed up with one adjective, and that's obviously not good.
And the end, well, we've all seen it. It was an easy way out. The jealousy remained. Alternatives were never truly explored (unless you include 'wanking'). And so the most hackneyed ending in the history of literature was tagged on at the end of the book. The ____ of the main character.
If you are to read Barnes, please read Flaubert's Parrot or The History of the World... They are both wonderful and it would sad if reading this would stop anyone from reading them.
Brightning Work.......2004-09-19
A look at the heart of jealousy - how it can rise from improbable circumstances to become a gripping nightmare world. One of Barnes' better books, nice balance of the comic and horrific.

A very sexy fantasy.......2007-04-24
If you've ever dreamed about being kidnapped about a big hulking brute who scares the life out of you, and then you spend a week on a ship full of dangerous vikings, and you are naked except for an ermine cloak, and the scary viking leader turns out to be very sweet and tender and he protects you and becomes your champion... well, if that is your fantasy, then this is the book for you.
Seriously, it is a good read. Nicely written, nicely paced, and all the important elements -- a spunky heroine, a tender hero, a villain or two, a rescue, and a happy ending. What more can you want?
Read them all, Cant wait for more!!.......2006-10-20
I've read this at least 4 times now. The charaters, the settings, puts a tiny piece of magic back into romance. Blended with humor, desire, and laughter, Ms. Litton delievers, worthy of a permanent place on my book shelves!
Dream of Me.......2006-06-29
This book was very good. I like the hero and heroine. Cymbra had substance , and so did Wolf. Boy isn't he the ideal?!!!Tiffany Clark
A-MAZ-ING!.......2006-05-07
I couldn't possibly convey how much I loved this book! It got me started in my addiction to historical romance...I'm 16 now, and I first read it when I was 12 (SHHH!). I pilfered it from my moms car and have been regularly reading it ever since. Perhaps Wolf explains my unfortunate(Or so my parents think), attraction to brunette bad-boys. All I know is that if you haven't read it yet, you are SO missing out!(I also recommend the other 2 in this trilogy, and anything else by Josie Litton, but this one holds a special place in my heart!)
Gush over, and teenage hormones aside, the book is very well-written and you'll marvel at the technique Ms. Litton uses when developing, or giving form, to her characters. You don't usually find such a rare talent, particularly in this genre. The book, as well as the author, are one-of-a-kind. Read it. Now.
2 is better than 1.......2006-03-24
Dream of Me/Believe in Me, two stories in one book it's fabulous.
Dream of Me is the story of Wolf and Cymbra. Wolf abducts Cymbra after she has rejected his suit of marriage and peace between their people in an insulting way. Wolf wanted to abduct her and make her his shamed slave but in the voyage home he gets to know her and he believes her when she says she wasn't informed of he's suit of marriage. So he decides to marry her. They marry and you see how their love develops and you don't feel like you want to hit someone on the head. Hawk Cymbra's brother is enraged at his sisster's abduction and swears to get her back. The problem is she's happy and she doesn't want to go back. Hawk isn't sure if she's telling the truth or if she's forced. What will he do? How will wolf react? This Book is Highly Recommended.
Believe in Me is the story of Hawk Cymbra's brother and marriages for peace continues. Hawk is to marry lady Krysta. Lady Krysta sends her attendants before her and Hawk finds himself strangely attracted to her maid. The maid is Lady Krysta in disguise wishing to find out about her fiancé's true colors. What will Hawk say about this deception? Another great romance. I recommend that you also buy the last book in the trilogy together Come Back to Me. Since only then will you find out who is the one responsible for the problems between the Vikings and Saxons. Example who rejected the letter Wolf sent to Hawk asking for Cymbra's hand.

Church History has a real value to interpreting the Bible.......2001-03-03
A few words for this extraordinary book. The author is well informed. He researched one hundred or more books and periodicals about the History of Premillenialism. It is a good idea in this time of fever from the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, that is good, to review some of the historical data concerning this matter. Tim La Haye's betsellers series about he rapture need a historical perspective too. I personally found very valuable and helpful to interprete some difficult passages from the Bible. I recommend it.

A Great Guide to a Great Series.......2003-09-04
Babylon 5 was unique in television. The main plot for the entire series was mapped out before the show even started. As a result, it developed a loyal fan base that still loves it.
This book is the second in a series of five episode guides to the series. Covering the second season, it has a separate chapter for each of the twenty-two episodes. Each starts with a plot summary, but then goes into behind the scenes stories and commentaries. Through interviews with cast, crew, and creator J. Michael Straczynski, author Jane Killick is able to give a full picture of what went into each episode. Some of my favorite parts are the stories of bloopers or jokes the cast played on each other. I also find the summaries useful if I'm looking for a particular episode to rewatch.
Starting out the book are two essays. The first provides insight into the challenges faced in producing Babylon 5 on the tight budget they had and the creative ways that the crew overcame them. The second in an introduction to the second season, painting broad strokes of the story arcs introduced and developed over the course of the season.
Any fan will love to have this well researched book for a behind the scenes look at a wonderful piece of science fiction television history.
Essential Reading for the B5 Viewer.......2002-11-07
The Babylon 5: Season by Season guidebooks are an essential read for fans of the TV series. Containing photos, interviews, essays, and in-depth rundowns of each episode, each book is indispensable for B5 vets and newbies alike. Strongly recommended.
A great book series, but if you are new to the show..........2001-10-24
This is a really good book series for B5 fans. It makes a great companion & fun reading after you have watched each show. But I would recommend it mainly for those that have seen the series & are watching it again. The reason I say that is because it is laced with spoilers all throughout the commentaries. That's fine if you've seen the whole thing already, but it stinks if you are watching it for the first time. If you don't mind that sort of thing...go for it, but this is the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. For a good "non-spoiler" companion guide, I highly recommend The Babylon File: The Definitive Unauthorized Guide to J. Michael Straczynski's TV Series Babylon 5 by Andy Lane (Versions 1 & 2). He shows no mercy sometimes. If he does or doesn't like the show, he let's you know. But it's a blast to read.
Shadows and more........2000-03-24
One of the more popular episodes of Babylon 5 is fleshed out in this exciting look into the calm before the storm of the Shadows. G'Kar the Narn, is unable to find anyone who is willing to listen to his warnings about the coming menace. It seems that the certain people already know of the Shadows and are desperate not to let on about thier knowledge, as they attempt to mount a plan of attack. The book is well written and has a lively pace. It is great to get into the minds of some of the popular characters, and the book expands on what was a great episode to start with.

Compelling with issues.......2007-01-28
This book really took me a while to get into. It wasn't until the last 50 pages until I really became involved in the story. But, I have to admit by the end that I was into it and wished I had the next book. That said there are still problems with the book. I found the character development to be rather thin. The author also tends to have a lot of narative foreshadowing. By that I mean he will actually hint heavily to the reader what is going to happen before it happens. But, in my mind the greatest weekness is that the author tends to be didactic and moralizing. Sometimes this comes from the dialog of the characters and other times it comes directly from the author. For example, at one point one of the main characters, Seth, was thinking about lying to his mother, the author then digressed into a long discussion of the ills brought on by lying. I agree with his point but I think these lessons are more effectivly demonstrated through the unfolding of the plot itself rather than through direct interjection by the author.
All that said I again must say that by the end of the book I was into it and am looking forward to the sequel. Also, my 13 year old son thoroughly enjoyed the book.
A genuine must-read........2006-12-08
Exceptionally well-written story of the eternal battle between good and evil -- with a most original twist. I couldn't put it down. It's so appropriate for all ages, I'm giving a copy to my 11-year-old great-grandson, who, I believe, will appreciate and enjoy it as much as I.
a wonderful message within an exiting story.......2006-08-21
Thank you Matt Sween. You have shown me an incredible adventure filled with surprising twists, a great plot, and memorable characters.
If you are reading this and debating if you should buy this or not, please purchase. It is definatly worth it. I have read the book and cannot wait until the next comes out.
Get ready for a true epic adventure.......2006-04-05
I love The Darkest Shadow. This is an adventure that both children and adults will enjoy reading. The characters are real, compelling and loveable. I cared about each and every one of them. The story depicts a historically picturesque struggle between good and evil. There are twists and turns within every page. It in some ways reminds me of "The Lion, the witch and the Wardrobe" without the talking animals. This is a first rate story and I look forward to the sequel.
An engaging and intriguing literary work..........2006-04-05
The Darkest Shadow is an engaging and intriguing literary work and spiritual allegory. The thoughtful character development made me feel like I was part of the story, like I knew each character personally. The intertwining plot lines really pulled me in - once I started reading I just couldn't stop...CS Lewis and Tolkien fans take note, this is the next big fantasy series!

Book Description
The Earth year 2258 was set to be one of new beginnings but instead became a time of exceptional discord. The disputes between the Narn and Centauri have steadily escalated as the two age-old enemies vie for territory and influence, even as the Minbari subtly manipulate the younger races for their own nebulous ends. The Vorlons have, for the first time, appeared to other races on board the Babylon 5 diplomatic station but their motives seem convoluted and beyond the concerns of others. Even the Earth Alliance has suffered, with the seemingly accidental death of its president and a growing feeling among many that its government has become fragmented, with shadowy groups becoming increasingly self-serving, pursuing secret agendas with worrying consequences. Terrorist groups have grown increasingly daring in their activities, trying to secure freedom for worlds within the Earth Alliance or keep alien influence far from humanity. Times are growing dark for the weak and helpless, but it is also fertile ground for opportunists and heroes to leave a permanent mark on the galaxy. The Coming of Shadows is a sourcebook for the Babylon 5 roleplaying game, exploring in detail the personalities and events of 2259. Used in conjunction with Chapter 8 of the main rulebook, Signs and Portents, Games Masters can now accurately extend their campaigns and story arcs beyond 2258 to include the dramatic galaxy-shaking events detailed here. Every episode of the second season of the Babylon 5 television show is fully covered in The Coming of Shadows, along with numerous scenario and campaign hooks that will make it easy to integrate them with ongoing story arcs already unfolding in current games. As described in Chapter 9 of the main rulebook, Campaigns on Babylon 5, players can witness or even become directly involved in these events, engaging in story arcs of their own that may put them at the centre of the galaxy alongside the heroes of the television show. This sourcebook also includes the main personalities found on board Babylon 5, updated from those that appeared in the main rulebook in 2258, as well as featuring a few new faces. New rules additions, equipment and vehicles are also featured, expanding the Babylon 5 roleplaying game no matter where or when the Games Master chooses to set his story arcs and campaigns. The year 2258 set the scene for players new to the Babylon 5 roleplaying game. The Coming of Shadows will elevate games to new levels of passion and excitement as players begin to discover just who the real powers in the galaxy are. . .

Just as God gave Dorie Van Stone a tender heart to forgive her abusers, He also gave her the strength to reveal her past in No Place to Cry, the sequel to the best-seller Dorie: The Girl Nobody Loved. Through her candor you will gain insight into the trauma of emotional and sexual abuse.
Customer Reviews:
Good Stuff.......2007-04-17
This book is quite touching. It tells Dorie's story of all the unbelievably horribe things she experience while growing up being abused both physially and sexually. It gives hope to those who believe that no one's situation is as bad as their's or those who think recovery is not possible. If you are looking for self help to enhance you own healing journey this book is probably not what you need if you dont fall into the above categories. However, it is a great testimony to be aware of.
Dorie's story of hope and healing.......2006-11-04
This is Dorie Van Stone's complete story - the sometimes graphic details that were left out of her book, "Dorie, the Girl Nobody Loved". This book gives hope to those who have been abused or who work with those who have. God had his hand on Dorie and brought her full circle to a place of healing where she is now ministering to others - an amazing true story!
Great testamony about God's love and power to heal.......1999-03-16
My friend told me about this book and asked me to read it. This is a great testamony about what God can do to help people in the low place. Doris story realy touched my heart and it woke me up about how many people are sexyualy abuesd and what terrible exspirience this is. We, I and my friend wanted to do something about it. We wanted more people to heare Doris story, so they would be able to get some help if this had happend to them, so we transleted her book from english into Icelandic. I have heard that it helped many people here in Iceland to get healing from God after they read this book.
