    Book Description

Yekl (1896), the first novel upon which the much acclaimed film Hester Street was based, was probably the first novel in English that had a New York East Side immigrant as its hero. Reviewing it, William Dean Howells hailed Cahan as "a new star of realism."

5 out of 5 stars Another Incredible Susan Mallery Desert Rogue Story.......2006-03-07

Lianna Archer and her daughter landed in El Bahar looking forward to their new life and home. Lianna's looking forward to her new job as teacher at one of the schools, getting away from bad memories and saving some money for the future. However, just as they're ready to disembark, a band of men board, among them Crown Prince Malik Khan. This handsome prince spies Lianna and decides he wants this pretty teacher and daughter to stay with him at the Royal palace. He will not take "no" for an answer and whisks them away. The sexual attraction between them was so strong it was frightening. It's a constant battle between them for her to stay in the palace. However, Lianna demands to move to her own quarters the school provided for them.

Days later, the Prince arrives to extend an invitation that Lianna join him in the desert to attend a dinner with a nomad tribe. She is requested to dress appropriately so as not to offend the tribesmen. Little does she know that a marriage ceremony between them has been planned, he requests she stay overnight in the desert and she agrees. The next morning when she finds out they are married, she goes ballistic.

So many questions, she's attracted, can she trust her heart, and can she trust her daughter and her heart to this Crown Prince? What so moved me was Malik's story, his childhood, his first marriage, his inability to trust and feel and when he finally realizes what's it's all about, well it's tender, sweet and a great love story with a Cinderella ending.

      LIANA AND THE KING.

Single mom Liana Archer had read her share of romance novels featuring dashing, passionate sheiks. Still, she was astonished when sinfully handsome Malik Khan, Crown Prince of exotic El Bahar, hijacked her and her little girl off an airliner and into his lavish palace. Why would the sexy desert prince want a passably pretty schoolteacher from San Bernadino? Dazed, breathless and mesmerized with desire, Liana quickly became Malik's royal bride. But dare she entrust her daughter--or her heart--to a man who would give them anything but his love? Or might a caring American mother and child finally move this proud, imperious monarch and make his kingdom complete?

Third in the Desert Rogues series

The Crowned Prince see's the new teacher for the American School and her daughter get off the plane and decides then and there that he wants her. So he takes her home and settles her into the palace and a romance insues that Lana (our young single mother) isn't all that sure she wants. Malik our strong, stiff-uper-lip type crowned prince is more than willing to give the woman he wants anything she wants but his heart. Unfortunately, she only wants his heart, for her all the rest of the royal trappings is just frosting on the cake. This is the concluding book in a wonderfull little trillogy by Ms. Mallery, and it is Definately worth the reading time!!

This was an OK ending to the Desert Rogues brothers series. It just wasn't a great story. This teacher is going to be in this country for two years and it feels like she doesn't have a clue about the country. Also, I agree with some of the other reviewers about how different Malik is in this book than in the other two books. And, what's with these perfect children these heroines always have? If this kid was any better behaved, she'd be a saint.

All of the Golden World titles were penned by Zachary Hughes aka Evan Innes. This series is a great group of books and, as Mr Bayless writes, it's a shame there isn't a #6 and so on. However, looking for books by this author under Zachary Hughes will net the reader a ton of great stories.

          4 out of 5 stars Great series........2000-01-25

This series of books was very well done. It's a shame that Bantam Books canceled the series after only five volumes. Other than Volume One, I don't remember alot of details since it has been awhile since I read them. The books seemed very scientific in detail(whether any was accurate or not, who can say), but not boring. The best thing of the series was that it was a continuing story(not like Star Trek or Star Wars novels, where if you don't read the previous one, it doesn't really matter). A lot of ideas from these books found their way into Star Trek: The Next Generation(which was new at the time). The Admiral was Data. Turning Grace Monroe into a part cyborg, part human happened before The Borg were introduced(or 7 of 9). The ending to the last volume was absolutely fantastic. Too bad we will never see Volume 6. Any body who would like to see more volumes in this series should write Bantam Books. I don't know if it would do any good, but it couldn't hurt. The author Evan Innes, was a pen name, so they probably used different writers for each book, but they were all good.

            Book Description

KINGSPORT is a coastal town located a morning's stroll from Arkham. Draped in mists and fog, it is home to artists and fishermen, sailors and dreamers. Here dreams and reality mingle to an unsettling degree.

Some find solace in such dreams; others find only terror and death. Charles Baxter's dreams drove him to despair. He took his own life, throwing himself into the sea. The only clues to his demise: a water-soaked collection of poems.

Horrors exist in the real world of Kingsport as well, remnants of an ancient witch-cult that once infested the town. Unspeakable things crawl through their burrows beneath Central Hill and lurk in the fog off Jersey Reef, preying on fishermen and unsuspecting tourists alike.

Kingsport's soothing atmosphere and beautiful setting beckons to vacationers. Its perch on the brink of the dream-world inspires artists. Investigators come to Kingsport to find understanding of the dark realms of the Cthulhu Mythos.

H.P. Lovecraft's KINGSPORT describes this fabled Massachusetts town in meticulous detail-its important personalities, buildings, history, and its weird people and places. This book also features a fold-out players' map of the town, a tourist brochure describing places of interest, and three adventures with player aids for added realism and enjoyment.

Includes the H.P. Lovecraft short story "The Strange High House In The Mist" (1931)

4 out of 5 stars Workmanlike time travel romance.......2007-07-06

"Through the Mists of Time" is a story of a disabled young woman from Victorian England who finds herself sent back in time to Roman Pompeii in 79AD.

Valerie Brooks had been injured by a carriage when she was six: her foot has never healed properly and she can only walk with a cane. Although Valerie dreams of romance, she has reluctantly recognised that no young man in 1865 would consider marrying what they would call a cripple. She is studying hard, particulaly latin and ancient history, in hopes of becoming a teacher. Valerie has always been fascinated by archeology, and is delighted when her wealthy father announces that the family will be taking a holiday to visit the excavations at Pompeii.

Unfortunately after talking to a strange old lady, who tells her that she will find love "through the mists," Valerie gets a rather closer look at the destruction of Pompeii than she had expected. After a stone falls on her head she wakes in the first century.

Assuming from her strange speech and dress that she must be a witch or a runaway slave, the authorities in Pompeii sell her as a slave. And as if that wasn't bad enough, she then discovers that it is August in the first year of the reign of the Emperor Titus, e.g. 79 AD - so she has three weeks to escape before Vesuvius destroys the city ...

Apart from the rather twee illustrations and the complete lack of any explanation of how or why the old lady can move people forward and back in time, this is a very well crafted novel.

I particularly liked the description of the excavation of Pompeii in the 19th century, including plenty of accurate details such as how the shapes of the luckless victims of the eruption were captured by making plaster casts of the holes where their bodies had been surrounded by ash.

However, this novel was slightly spoiled for me because it is merely good, and consequently suffers by comparison to two other books I had recently read featuring the destruction of Pompeii which are brilliant.

The first of these, another Time Travel story but Sci-Fi rather than romance, is "Far Edge of Darkness" by Linda Evans. The second, a straight historical novel, is "Pompeii" by Robert Harris. If you like "Through the Mists of Time" you will almost certainly love both of these.

5 out of 5 stars Even if you're not a typical romance reader..........2006-05-29

Even if you're not a typical romance reader, you will enjoy Teri A. Moore's Through the Mists of Time. I usually read mysteries, but I enjoyed this time-travel tale that pits a heroine from Victorian England against the imminent eruption of Mt. Vesuvius to find her way back to her own time. Figuring out how she came to be in Pompeii in 79 A.D. and how to get back before the eruption is not her only worry, though. She must deal with the superstitions of the ancient world, jealousies and cruelties at the hands of other women, and her impending romance with Christos, the master of the house.

Moore presents wonderful characters caught up in a dangerous time while sorting through the issues of class and of love. The resolution of the book is wonderful. (Yes, they DO survive Pompeii, but the pleasure is in finding out how.)

This book shows Moore has a lot of promise. I look forward to reading more of her ficiton.

                    4 out of 5 stars Terrific read........2005-11-15

Our story opens in England, 1865. Valerie Brooks is the daughter of a banker. If a man was to poetically describe her, he may praise only her beauty. But Val is very intelligent as well. Valerie has received more education than most young ladies of the era. She enjoys history best, particularly Roman and Greek history. Therefore, she is thrilled when her family sets sail to visit Pompeii, Italy.

While visiting Italy, Val views the casts of people who died nearly two thousand years ago when Vesuvius, a volcano, erupted. Yet never did Val suspect that she would end up trapped during an earthquake and teleported back in time to the year 79 A.D.

Christos Campanius Marcellus is one of the wealthiest men in Pompeii. He purchases Valerie from a slave auction, despite her being crippled or the people claiming her to be a witch. From the beginning, Christos knows Val is his destiny. He has only to figure the way to her heart.

**** Do not let the simple cover art fool you. This is a wonderful read. A historical romance in which the heroine travels even further back in time. That, in itself, is rare. Yet the author also included another rare item, the heroine is crippled! Val must use a cane in order to walk. Men in BOTH of Valerie's eras look down upon such women. I found this novel to be fast paced, educational, and down right dreamy. ****

                    by T.A. Moore

She came to him in a dream. The ethereal beauty appeared to Christos on a nightly basis but this time was different: This time she left him with a promise. The next time Christos touched her it would be actual skin that his fingers caressed. The wait seemed endless.

Valerie Sherwood Brookes would rather read about timeless love in romance novels than be trapped in a loveless marriage. Her mother on the other hand was beginning to get concerned about her daughter's chances. Valerie knew her mother could not face the fact that no man would want a cripple for a wife while she had resigned herself to it. She was content with her novels and her dreams. Then one day her father comes home with startling news. An important client at the bank wants Valerie's father to approve a loan for an archeological dig in Pompeii. In order for her father to do that he must first investigate the proposed venture. For Valerie it was a dream come true. She had every intention of doing some investigating of her own.

Amidst rumors of the ancient dead rising and mild earthquakes Valerie sneaks off to do some exploring alone. As she drew images of what she'd found the earth began to shake. Before she could protect herself Valerie was hit from flying debris. When she awakened it was to find herself in a Pompeii much different from the one she'd been studying. Pompeii was very much alive and well.

Christos noticed Valerie being arrested. The senate had just passed a law banning witchcraft and the people feared this new person was a witch. He had to wonder - Could this woman, the very same woman from his dreams, be a witch? Had she enchanted his dreams? In order to keep her close and find his answers Christos takes her to be a slave in his home.

Valerie had seen the recognition in Christos' eyes when he'd come to see her. Would he be her knight in shining armor and help her to return to her own time? She knew Pompeii's fate. Leaving would mean abandoning Christos to face a violent death. Valerie had to find a way to save Christos and return to her life in 1865 England.

Through the Mists of Time by author T.A. Moore is an insightful and sensual indulgence for readers of historical romance. It is a story of a transcendent love and the development of character. The reader is pulled into the story through the detailed sketching of the heroine's evolvement from an immature schoolgirl to a compassionate woman. If you are a fan of time travel romance then make it a point to read T.A. Moore's Through the Mists of Time. You won't regret it.

Time travel stories have always been my favorites, and this was one is original and richly-imagined . . . and a lot of fun! Our own era never makes an appearance. Instead, the protagonist, Valerie, travels between her era, which is Victorian England, and ancient Rome -- just before the eruption of Pompeii.

The time periods could hardly be more different. In Victorian England, sensuality is repressed, hidden behind corsets, elaborate manners and snobbery. But in ancient Pompeii there are no corsets, only togas. Sensuality rules, at least among the upper classes -- and Cristos, handsome, rich and powerful, is VERY upper class.

Weeks before the eruption of Vesuvius, a naive and inexperienced Valerie mysteriously finds herself in ancient Rome, a slave in the household of the very-experienced, very sensual Cristos. She must use every ounce of her intelligence and pluck to deal with determined enemies, even as her own sensuality awakens.

Looming over all is the ominously smoking volcano . . . .

                          Book Description

A new translation of Max Weber's classic The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism--one of the most enduring and influential books in sociology--is now available from Roxbury.

Translator Stephen Kalberg is an internationally acclaimed Weberian scholar. In this Third Roxbury Edition, Kalberg offers a precise and nuanced rendering of The Protestant Ethic that captures Weber's style as well as the unusual subtlety of his descriptions and causal arguments. Kalberg's standardization of Weber's terminology facilitates understanding of the various twists and turns in his complex lines of reasoning. Weber's original italicization, highlighting major themes, has been restored. A glossary of major terms and numerous clarifying endnotes have been added; foreign terms have been translated; bracketed insertions in the text identify obscure names. In short, the Protestant Ethic thesis is presented in a clear and highly readable manner.

There are three compelling reasons for students to read this classic:

It explores the continuing debate regarding the origins and legacy of modern capitalism in the West.
It helps the reader better understand economic development today around the world, especially in Russia, Eastern Europe, Asia, and South America.
It plumbs the deep cultural forces that affect contemporary work life and the workplace in the United States and Europe.

In his introduction, Kalberg offers a sketch of Weber's life and his major concerns, examines the intellectual context at the time The Protestant Ethic was written, and summarizes major aspects of Weber's complex analysis. Kalberg also discusses this classical study in the context of Weber's other writings. Finally, Kalberg investigates the contribution of The Protestant Ethic for understanding the role played by cultural forces in modern economic development.

The new translation includes Weber's 1906 essay "The Protestant Sects and the Spirit of Capitalism." Written after his extensive travels in the United States in 1904, Weber comments here on the diverse ways in which the legacies of early American Protestantism remain influential. Also contained in this edition are Weber's masterful prefatory remarks to his Collected Essays in the Sociology of Religion, in which he defines the uniqueness of Western societies and asks what "ideas and interests" combined to call forth modern Western rationalism.

For students, The Protestant Ethic is a starting point toward understanding the multiple dimensions of social change. The continuing debates about the main elements of modern life, economic cultures and business ethics, our "common sense" economic determinism and "rational choices," the future of modern capitalism, the relationship between cultural forces and social structures, and the tension between science and religion are very much part of the Weberian project. Small wonder, then, that The Protestant Ethic continues to be one of the most frequently assigned readings in sociology.

Translator Stephen Kalberg is the author of Max Weber's Comparative-Historical Sociology (1994), Max Weber's Sociology of Civilizations, and numerous articles on Weber. He is the editor of Max Weber: The Confrontation with Modernity (2003l). He teaches at Boston University, where he is Associate Professor of Sociology. He is also co-chair of the German Study Group at Harvard University's Center for European Studies.

5 out of 5 stars Modern capitalism and its origins.......2005-02-01

What Weber's ideas most clearly demonstrate is not capitalism as it is seen by the the devout protestant or any derivation thereof, he clearly proposes that capitalism itself is founded and practiced solely on the moral and ethical teachings of the protestant refromation. Furthurmore, the continued presence of God or any other religious influence is secondary to the overall implications of their socio-political indoctronation.
Weber essentially argues, that it is protestantism's continued comitment to a vocational calling as compared to traditional catholic virtue of church commitment, that is the essential method of spiritual distinguishemnt.
It is aided by the virtualy simultanious growth of both capitalism and Protestantism that enabled capitalism to extend beyond simply a seclar practise and over-all "necissary evil," into a fully encompassing and consuming reflection of an individual's spiritual right of passage.
Evidence of Weber's theory is distributed widely through contemporary polotics, fully 20 of the top 30 industrailized nations are predominantly protestant. Even countries such as Japan that seemingly have had no protestant influence and have had success with a capitalist economy, inevitably, must submit themselves to Weber's theory because, Weber is not concerned pervasiveness protestant traditions, only with the occurence of protestant ideals.
This book, though highly debated and controversial, is a must read for anyone with the slightest interest in global context or concerned with capitalism metioric rise to power. With a growing Globalized capitalist system, Webers ideas undoubtedly will become increasingly more apperent as capitalism invades every nook and cranny of an increasingly shrinking world; will cultures with otherwise foreign or dissimilar beliefs and practices every really be able to accept the merits of capitalism if they must equally reconcile themselves with the ethical premises of protestantism?

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but not really scholarship.......2002-09-11

There are so many problems with Weber's idea that it is hard to know where to begin. First of all, there are no examples anywhere in the text of statements of purpose from capitalists reflecting on the Protestant Ethic. The closest Weber comes is Benjamin Franklin, but Franklin was an American who lived several generations after the origin of capitalism in Europe. Franklin better reflects the "can do" spirit of a new continent, the "American Adam," than he is a "secularization" of Calvin. Couldn't Weber find a European Ben Franklin?

Moreover, Weber's thesis fails the Ockham rule. As Adam Smith argues, the reason people chose to play rather than work is because work offered such paltry returns. Why invent this complicated "secularization thesis" when "greed" is a sufficient explanation?

Third, as one astute reviewer noted below, Weber inherits a Kantian ethics that he was never able to lose. Why must the capitalist pursue money or success "for its own sake"? Are there not perfectly rational reasons for working hard, including greed?
Why must the capitalist adhere to a Kantian ethics of "wealth for its own sake" without any ulterior motives? No one before the Objectivist wackos ever argued that unlimited accumulation of wealth is an "end in itself," or argued that the pursuit of unlimited wealth is a right independent of the good it may do for society.

It should also be understood that Marx is not the only target of Weber's polemical thrusts. He considered his primary target to be Werner Sombart, but Sombart has never been taken seriously in the US because he was a conservative and briefly a Nazi. Sombart's books are in fact much more plausible than Weber's. Luxury and Capitalism is in fact a very "Smithian" account of the origin of capitalism in the seigneurial lord's fascination with luxury goods, and his gradual displacement by the urban manufacturer.

All of that said, Weber tells a very interesting story that is more about the "rationalisation" of "demagification" (Entzauberung) of society than it is about capitalism. By equating capitalism with "efficiency" or "rationalization," however, Weber obscures the basic issues.
